WWE touts record-breaking success of Money in the Bank 2024

WWE is touting all of the metrics that made Money in the Bank 2024 a lucrative night for the company.

In a press release issued on Monday, WWE stated that Money in the Bank — which was held at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto — set a new record for the highest arena gate the company has ever drawn in Canada. That doesn’t include stadium shows like WrestleMania.

This is now the most-watched Money in the Bank event of all time, surpassing last year’s viewership record by 46 percent. Merchandise sales were also up from 2023’s record. WWE says the top-selling item was a Canadian-themed Money in the Bank briefcase.

WWE states that more than 45,000 fans attended the four events the promotion held in Toronto during Money in the Bank week. In addition to Money in the Bank, WWE SmackDown, NXT Heatwave, and a comedy show hosted by Sami Zayn took place in the city.

“Weekends that bring visitors en masse to our host cities play an important part in our planning process,” WWE President Nick Khan said. “The results are a testament to our Superstars, our creative team led by Paul Levesque, our media & production team led by Lee Fitting and, most importantly, our fans who both attended and created our massive viewership.”

The press release also touted that WWE’s “WrestleMania XL: Behind the Curtain” documentary has more than 2.3 million views on YouTube since premiering last week, and John Cena’s retirement tour announcement is WWE’s most-viewed segment on social media since WrestleMania 40.

WWE Money in the Bank review: The road to SummerSlam begins

Image: WWE

The main event for WWE SummerSlam was pretty much official at the end of Saturday’s Money in the Bank.

The Bloodline’s Solo Sikoa, teaming with Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga, defeated Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton & Kevin Owens after Sikoa pinned Rhodes after the throat spike. It was the expected result as they have built up the idea of that match in the last few weeks.

The match itself was pretty good and maybe slightly better than the usual main event TV match thanks to a hot crowd. The question in my mind heading into MITB was how Fatu would look in a WWE ring and he did a fine job. He clearly has something, and I wonder if somewhere down the line, this turns into a situation where he becomes more over than Sikoa. But that’s another story for way, way down the line, I imagine.

Another big story coming out of Saturday is John Cena announcing his retirement tour for next year. Given he’s repeatedly talked about wrapping things up soon, it makes sense. He’s nearing 50 and at this point, he has a career narrating car commercials for as long as he wants to. The tour doesn’t begin until 2025, so probably best not to speculate on future Cena matches until then. Well, okay, one: Cena vs. Gunther. Let’s will it into existence.

Elsewhere on the card:

  • The men’s Money in the Bank ladder match opened the show. Like I said in my last review containing a ladder match (last Sunday’s Forbidden Door), I can’t think of a more overused match type in wrestling right now. With that said, I’d say this was the best match on the show. It was your typical PPV ladder match filled with crazy spots. Drew McIntyre ended up winning as expected, but I can’t talk about what this means because it’s a moot point (more shortly).
  • Bron Breakker surprisingly failed to defeat Sami Zayn to win the Intercontinental title. This was very good as they did a great job showcasing Breakker’s explosiveness while Zayn is one of the best babyfaces in WWE. Triple H’s booking is pretty predictable, so I was surprised to see Zayn keep the title. This does fit in with his usual booking traits in another way: he really likes long title reigns. The Zayn run with the IC title isn’t over, but where it takes him next is anyone’s guess.
  • The World Heavyweight title match will probably be remembered more for the angle than the match which seems like a recurring theme with Damian Priest’s title run. He and Seth Rollins were having a pretty good match when McIntyre came down with the briefcase. For whatever reason, instead of waiting until the match finished, he cashed in during the match and made it a three way…until CM Punk made his return and attacked McIntyre once again, costing him the match. I am guessing this will all come together at SummerSlam, but with Punk’s status still in the air, it’s a wait-and-see approach. One thing I can say is WWE has done a great job of keeping Punk fresh in everyone’s minds while he’s recovering from the triceps injury.
  • The women’s Money in the Bank ladder match was…sloppy. Things looked really bad in some spots like that Unprettier by Chelsea Green or Zoey Stark landing right on her head after a corkscrew springboard. Everyone worked hard and I don’t think it was a bad match per se. It was a weird combination of sloppiness and people looking like they were actually attempting to hurt people. Weird match. Tiffany Stratton ended up the winner, so she’ll have the briefcase for a time. I wonder if Nia Jax wins the WWE Women’s title next month and then Stratton turns on Jax at SummerSlam and pins her to take the title.

That’ll do it for Money in the Bank. Next up is SummerSlam: one of the bigger WWE shows of the year. Will Roman Reigns return? Will CM Punk wrestle? Just how dangerous is Nia Jax? We’ll learn all of these answers in less than a month.

Solo Sikoa pins Cody Rhodes at WWE Money in the Bank

Solo Sikoa is all but confirmed as the next challenger for Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.

In the main event of Money in the Bank, Sikoa pinned Rhodes to win a chaotic six-man tag team match. The victory looks to set up Sikoa challenging for Rhodes’ title at SummerSlam. Dave Meltzer first reported last month that Rhodes would be facing Sikoa at the August 3 event.

Sikoa teamed with Jacob Fatu & Tama Tonga to defeat Rhodes, Randy Orton & Kevin Owens on Saturday night. The match was Fatu’s WWE in-ring debut. He starred in the match, including saving Sikoa at the end when Rhodes looked to have Sikoa beat with a series of Cross Rhodes. That allowed Sikoa to get the victory after laying out Rhodes with a Samoan spike.

A low blow from Tonga Loa on Kevin Owens while the referee was down also helped The Bloodline win the match. Fatu, Tonga, and Loa have all been added to the new-look Bloodline by Sikoa since he took control of the faction and anointed himself as the new Tribal Chief. Sikoa kicked Jimmy Uso out of The Bloodline and also turned against Paul Heyman.

Before Money in the Bank, Sikoa cut a promo on SmackDown vowing to bring the Undisputed WWE Championship back to The Bloodline. Sikoa said Roman Reigns “was not man enough” to defeat Rhodes at WrestleMania 40.

“I’m going to take back our Undisputed WWE title from Cody Rhodes,” Sikoa said. “And if Roman Reigns wants that back, he can try and take it from me.”

Reigns has been away from WWE programming since his WrestleMania loss to Rhodes.

Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio is the venue for SummerSlam 2024.

Tiffany Stratton wins women’s WWE Money in the Bank ladder match

Tiffany Stratton is the new Ms. Money in the Bank.

The 25-year-old Stratton got to experience one of the biggest moments of her young career on Saturday when she won the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match. As the briefcase holder, Stratton can cash in for a shot at either the WWE Women’s Championship or Women’s World Championship at any point in the next year.

Chelsea Green, IYO SKY, Naomi, Lyra Valkyria, and Zoey Stark were the other competitors in the ladder match. In her home country of Canada, Green was the crowd favorite. She was about to capture the briefcase at the end of the match until Stratton pushed Green’s ladder over and she fell through two tables that were set up on the outside. Stratton then grabbed the Money in the Bank briefcase to win the match.

If Stratton successfully cashes in, it will be her first title reign on the main roster. She held the NXT Women’s Championship once prior to being called up. Stratton is a member of the SmackDown women’s division, which WWE Women’s title holder Bayley is the current champion of.

After winning Money in the Bank, Stratton appeared in a backstage segment with Trish Stratus, who was the host of tonight’s event.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted out a photo with Stratton and congratulated her on her victory:

Drew McIntyre wins men’s WWE Money in the Bank ladder match

Drew McIntyre has won Money In the Bank.

McIntyre defeated Jey Uso, LA Knight, Andrade, Chad Gable, and Carmelo Hayes on Saturday to win the briefcase. The finish had Uso climbing to the top of the ladder, but before he could grab the briefcase McIntyre pelted Uso with another ladder and gave him a claymore off the apron. With everyone else out, McIntyre climbed up the ladder and grabbed the briefcase for the win.

After defeating Ilja Dragunov and Sheamus to qualify on Raw this past Monday, McIntyre promised to win the Money in the Bank briefcase Saturday and walk out of Toronto the World Heavyweight Champion. Damian Priest is scheduled to defend the title against Seth Rollins later in the night.

McIntyre has also been embroiled in a feud with CM Punk over the last several months. After berating Punk for getting injured during the Royal Rumble match, Punk responded by costing McIntyre his newly-won World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania after Punk laid him McIntyre out. Punk also cost McIntyre the World Heavyweight title at Clash at the Castle. McIntyre responded by assaulting Punk during an episode of SmackDown, leaving him a bloody mess.

Seth Rollins on Becky Lynch: ‘I can’t speak to her future’

Seth Rollins can’t comment on Becky Lynch’s future.

During a sit-down interview on the WWE Money in the Bank pre-show, Rollins talked to Michael Cole about both his wife Becky Lynch and their daughter.

“The Man’s great, she’s great,” Rollins said. “ I can’t speak to her future or what she’s got moving forward, but she’s great, she’s in good spirits, and the little one’s awesome as well, she’s three-and-a-half, and she’s a menace, she runs the ship.”

Lynch was last seen on the May 27 edition of Raw, where she dropped the Women’s World Championship to Liv Morgan in a steel cage match. Dave Meltzer later reported that Lynch did not renew her contract with WWE and was looking to take an extended amount of time off.

“Becky Lynch didn’t renew,” he said. “ Becky Lynch is taking an extended leave. From what I was told, it’s not like a short period of time. She was looking for a long time out.”

Rollins returned from a knee injury last month and will be competing at Saturday’s Money in the Bank against Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship.

WWE, Cody Rhodes help fan who was denied wheelchair accessible MITB tickets

WWE has stepped in to make things right for a fan who was initially denied wheelchair accessible tickets to Money in the Bank.

This week, CBC News and CTV News published stories on Mike Ashkewe — a WWE fan who won tickets to Money in the Bank through a contest run by Toys “R” Us Canada. Ashkewe uses a wheelchair and, after winning, informed those in charge of the contest that he would need accessible seating. Though he was initially told not to worry, the digital marketing team for Toys “R” Us Canada emailed Ashkewe saying that they had talked to the venue and — because accessible tickets were sold out — nothing could be done. He was instead offered the cash value of the tickets, which was $301.99.

Ashkewe says it was “devastating” to learn that he wouldn’t be able to attend the show, but WWE found out about the issue on Wednesday night and secured accessible space for him by Thursday morning. WWE apologized to Ashkewe for what happened and arranged for Cody Rhodes to call him.

“I’m so sorry,” the Undisputed WWE Champion told Ashkewe. “The cool thing here is that we do have some tickets that are for you. Not only that, we’re going to pay for your transportation to come to Money in the Bank. We can’t have a fan like you sitting on the sidelines.”

“The American Nightmare made a Canadian dream [come true],” Ashkewe wrote on social media.

A spokesperson for Toys “R” Us Canada said they’re “very pleased” things worked out and are “delighted that Mike will get to enjoy this exciting event this weekend.”

“I really and sincerely hope that future contest holders, and anybody else, takes into consideration the needs of the disabled community,” Ashkewe said. “We want to come to events, we want to come to the concert, we want to come to the shows, we want to be involved, we want to be seen.”

“And I know WWE has an amazing track record with the disabled community,” Ashkewe said. “I know when they want to do amazing things they can. And this was unexpected.”

Money in the Bank is taking place from Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena this Saturday (July 6). Rhodes will be in action in a six-man tag match, teaming with Randy Orton & Kevin Owens against three members of The Bloodline.

Drew McIntyre, Zoey Stark qualify for WWE Money in the Bank

The final two Money in the Bank qualifiers were decided on Monday’s Raw.

Zoey Stark and Drew McIntyre won their triple threat matches to advance to the Money in the Bank ladder matches, which take place Saturday at the Scotiabank Arena in Ontario, Canada.

In the main event of Raw, McIntyre defeated Sheamus and Ilja Dragunov after hitting Sheamus with the claymore. Following the match, McIntyre was interviewed by Cathy Kelley where he said that he was going walk into Money in the Bank on Saturday and would leave Toronto the World Heavyweight Champion. He then put on the bracelet he stole from CM Punk to end the show.

Stark defeated Ivy Nile and Dakota Kai after Kairi Sane came out to cause a distraction, only for Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre to arrive and lay her out. The distraction allowed Stark to hit the Z-360 on Kai for the win.

The current lineup for WWE Money in the Bank on Saturday, July 6 in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena:

  • World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest defends against Seth Rollins — If Priest retains, Rollins can’t challenge for the title ever again as long as Priest holds it. If Rollins wins, Priest leaves The Judgment Day
  • Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn defends against Bron Breakker
  • Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton & Kevin Owens vs. The Bloodline
  • Men’s Money in the Bank ladder match: Jey Uso vs. Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes vs. Chad Gable vs. LA Knight vs. Drew McIntyre
  • Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match: IYO SKY vs. Chelsea Green vs. Lyra Valkyria vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Naomi vs. Zoey Stark

LA Knight, Tiffany Stratton, Naomi qualify for WWE Money in the Bank

Three more wrestlers qualified for the Money in the Bank ladder matches set for July 6 on Friday’s WWE SmackDown.

LA Knight defeated Logan Paul & Santos Escobar in a triple threat qualifying match on Friday to earn the fifth spot in the six-person men’s Money in the Bank ladder match field at next Saturday’s MITB pay-per-view. Knight pinned Paul with a roll-up after hitting Escobar with BFT to secure the victory.

In the first women’s qualifying bout on Friday’s episode, Tiffany Stratton defeated Jade Cargill & Candice LeRae in a triple threat. Stratton pinned LeRae with the PME after Indi Hartwell interfered on LeRae’s behalf and took out Cargill on the floor.

In the second women’s qualifier on Friday, Naomi defeated Hartwell & Blair Davenport after Cargill got retribution on Hartwell, interfering in the match to lead to Naomi’s victory.

Five of six spots are secured in both the men’s and women’s Money in the Bank ladder matches set for next Saturday, with the final spots to be decided on Monday’s Raw.

Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus vs. Ilja Dragunov will decide the final men’s participant in a qualifier on Monday’s Raw, while Zoey Stark vs. Ivy Nile vs. Dakota Kai will determine the final women’s qualifier.

Seth Rollins says he had ‘a few weeks notice’ prior to WWE Raw return

Seth Rollins talks about his return.

After taking time off following WrestleMania 40, Rollins appeared on last week’s Raw and quickly received a World Heavyweight Championship match against Damian Priest at Money in the Bank next weekend. Rollins told ComicBook Nation that he had a few weeks notice before making his return.

“A little fluctuation, yeah, I had a few weeks notice,” he said. “We kind of looked at the timeline of the injury, and the story and where I fell back into place, you never know how things are going to go. But the top of the card here on Raw is pretty stacked, you got guys like Damian Priest, you got Drew McIntyre, CM Punk whenever he’s around and able, you got Gunther kind of waiting in the wings as well…so it’s stacked, it was very interesting to see where I could slide in.”

“The time felt right coming off a huge event overseas, Clash at the Castle in Scotland, it was ripe for the pickin’, man. Damian Priest needed a challenger, so I hopped right in,” he added.

Rollins wrestled twice at WrestleMania 40, first teaming with Cody Rhodes to lose to The Rock and Roman Reigns on night one, then lost the World Heavyweight title to Drew McIntyre the next night. He then took time off to recover from a torn meniscus suffered earlier in the year.

Damian Priest, Seth Rollins agree to stipulations for WWE Money in the Bank title match

Seth Rollins and World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest have agreed to stipulations for their upcoming Money in the Bank title match.

While the two were exchanging words on Monday’s Raw, Rollins suggested two stipulations for their upcoming World Heavyweight Championship match on July 6. Rollins said if he lost, he could never challenge for the title again as long as Priest is champion. However, if Priest lost, he would have to leave The Judgment Day. After saying that the group needed him more than he needed them, he agreed to the stipulations.

Gunther then arrived and wished the two the best of luck, but said that whoever wins would be the lesser man at SummerSlam when he challenges for the title.

On last week’s Raw, Rollins made his surprise return to the company after taking time off following WrestleMania 40. After Rollins said that he would work for a title match and win the Money in the Bank ladder match, Priest instead said he would grant Rollins a title match at the premium live event.

Two new matches official for WWE Money in the Bank

Two new matches are official for WWE Money in the Bank set for Saturday, July 6.

A six-man tag team match featuring The Bloodline was added to the card for MITB during Monday’s Raw, with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes teaming with Randy Orton & Kevin Owens against three of Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa.

The six-man stems from the show-closing angle on last week’s SmackDown where Fat debuted as the newest member of The Bloodline in an attack on Rhodes that Orton & Owens attempted to thwart.

The Intercontinental Championship will also be on the line in Toronto at MITB, with Sami Zayn set to defend the title against Bron Breakker.

Breakker and Zayn had a backstage confrontation during Monday’s Raw where Breakker challenged Zayn for the PPV. Zayn quickly accepted, and Raw GM Adam Pearce made the match official.

The updated lineup for WWE Money in the Bank set for Saturday, July 6 in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena:

TBD vs. TBD
  • Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match: IYO SKY vs. Chelsea Green vs. Lyra Valkyria vs. TBD vs. TBD vs. TBD

Chad Gable & Lyra Valkyria qualify for WWE Money in the Bank

Two more have qualified for the upcoming Money in the Bank ladder matches.

Lyra Valkyria and Chad Gable have qualified for the ladder matches that will take place on July 6 in Toronto. In the first qualifier, Valkyria defeated Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane after pinning Sane with the nightwing (Michinoku driver). Later in the show, Chad Gable defeated Bronson Reed and Braun Strowman when Gable pinned Reed with a moonsault.

After the match, the lights went out and the Wyatt Sicks’ Nikki Cross emerged. Gable left before he could be attacked like on last week’s Raw. Later, he attempted to make amends with Otis and the rest of his former Alpha Academy students, but failed. The Creed Brothers and Ivy Nile then walked up to him as they started to talk.

Chelsea Green was victorious in the women’s qualifying bout on Friday’s SmackDown to earn her spot in the women’s ladder match.

Andrade defeated Kevin Owens & Grayson Waller in a triple threat to qualify, while Hayes scored a roll-up pin on Randy Orton in a triple threat also involving Tama Tonga to secure his place at the PPV.
