NJPW Wrestling Dontaku night two live results: Okada vs. Tanahashi

After having some of the best matches of this decade, Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi will square off once more for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

Much more is on the line than just the title tonight at the second night of Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka. If Okada can best Tanahashi, he will break Tanahashi’s record of 11 successful title defenses. Okada’s record title reign, at over 680 days, is also on the line. The two have had nothing but spectacular matches, so tonight is almost sure to be another memorable encounter.

Another big title match has Will Ospreay defending the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against KUSHIDA. The two have also had memorable, exciting bouts in the past and tonight may prove to be more of the same. With the Best of the Super Juniors tournament just a few weeks away, whoever wins the match tonight will have all of the momentum in the world heading into the annual event.

Other matches on the show mainly consist of tag team bouts. One of those features Bullet Club members who have sided with Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi (Guerrillas of Destiny and Bad Luck Fale) against those who have sided with Cody (Hangman Page, Marty Scurll and The Young Bucks). Another tag bout has all of LIJ against the Suzuki-gun contingent Minoru Suzuki, Killer Elite Squad, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and El Desperado.

Join us for live coverage tonight at 4 a.m. ET. There will be English commentary.

**********

Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask and Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Ren Narita, Shota Umino and Yuya Uemura

A standard opener, about what you’d expect. It boiled down to Narita and Taguchi. Narita countered a dodon with a roll up, but Taguchi kicked out and held onto his leg. He dug it in deep with an elbow to the knee and got the submission win.

Yujiro Takahashi and Chase Owens defeated Yuji Nagata and Tomoyuki Oka

Much like the opener, this was a short and solid match. Once again, the young lion was pinned as Owens pinned Oka with the package piledriver. Owens motioned they wanted the tag team titles next.

Roppongi 3K defeated Taichi, Taka Michinoku and Takashi Iizuka

Another “just there” match, I guess this was more about the culmination of the feud between these guys than anything. The Suzuki-gun trio were not happy about how yesterday went and jumped Roppongi 3K. The referee was taken out which allowed Taichi to use his cane. 3K came back with a triple knee and cornered Taka, then planted him with the 3K for the pin.

Tomohiro Ishii and Toru Yano defeated Togi Makabe and Henare

This was pretty good. The chemistry between Henare and Ishii is excellent, and the near falls from Henare were great. Ishii connected with the brainbuster for the win. Would love to see another match between these two.

Rocky Romero said after the match they were looking for the Junior tag team titles next.

Hirooki Goto, Jay White and YOSHI-HASHI defeated Juice Robinson, David Finlay and Michael Elgin

Good match. Everyone worked hard enough that the people got into it. A lot of the focus was between Michael Elgin and Hirooki Goto, which is very likely the next NEVER title program. YOSHI-HASHI scored the win, pinning Finlay after hitting karma.

Taichi jumped Goto after the match with his cane, and attacked Elgin as well. A triple threat match seems very likely, probably for Dominion. Meanwhile, Juice Robinson was checking on Finlay when Jay White stalked him from behind. White grabbed him and went for the Bladerunner but Juice escaped. White told him that he was getting into his head.

They announced Wrestling Dontaku on 5/3 and 5/4 in Fukuoka for next year.

Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, SANADA, Hiromu Takahashi and BUSHI defeated Minoru Suzuki, Lance Archer, Davey Boy Smith Jr., Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Desperado

Good match. The crowd was into this, especially when Naito and Suzuki went at it. Match wasn’t particularly long, but everyone looked good while it lasted. Naito pinned Kanemaru with the Destino.

Suzuki grabbed a chair after the match, but was escorted out as LIJ celebrated in the ring. Everyone except Naito made their exit as he eventually followed suit. He was slapping hands with people when all of a sudden one fan grabbed him and started to attack him. He flung Naito into the barricade and threw him back in the ring, where he revealed himself to be none other than Chris Jericho.

Jericho planted Naito with the codebreaker as officials came to the ring to break things up. Jericho exited the ring, came back with a ring bell and smashed Naito with it, leaving him a bloody mess. Jericho attacked Naito one more time before eventually making his way to the back. A stretcher was out for Naito, but he refused to take it and left under his own power.

Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Bad Luck Fale and Guerrillas of Destiny defeated Cody, The Young Bucks, Hangman Page and Marty Scurll

So Marty said he was going to bodyslam Fale. At the start of the match, he tried. Let’s just say it failed.

Story of the match was the Bucks weren’t interested in tagging in whenever Ibushi or Omega were in the match. They confront one another in the ring, but Page and Cody take out the Golden Lovers to the floor. Ibushi launched off with a giant moonsault to the floor, taking out much of Team Cody. Back in the ring, Scurll tries to bodyslam Fale again, but it fails as Fale lands on top of him and pins him. This was good, although it felt like another match that didn’t last too long.

Kenny chases Cody to the back as the rest of Bullet Club tries to gather themselves in the ring. Tama Tonga throw up the too sweet sign. The rest of the club (including Owens and Yujiro) obliged, so for the time being it looks like everyone (aside from Kenny and Cody) are on the same page. Ibushi, who watched this as a bystander, walked away as Bullet Club reunited.

Will Ospreay defeated KUSHIDA to retain the IWGP Jr. heavyweight title

This was really great stuff. I think they have had better matches with one another, especially ones with better heat, but the crowd was still into this and they still had a terrific match, easily the best of out of either show up to this point.

Both men have their necks taped up. Ospreay and KUSHIDA start things slowly. They go to the outside where KUSHIDA whips Ospreay into the barricade, but he jumps over and hands on the outside. He launches off the barricade, but KUSHIDA grabs him and sinks in the armbar on the outside.

KUSHIDA focuses on the arm as he takes Ospreay back into the ring, then works on his neck. Ospreay nails KUSHIDA with a kick and takes him to the outside where he hits the Sasuke special. Ospreay continued to gain momentum but failed connecting a new move. They fought to the apron where KUSHIDA fell to the floor, but jumped up, grabbed Ospreay and DDT’d him to the floor.

KUSHIDA jumped into the ring as Ospreay reentered and hit a big hurricanrana. Ospreay grabbed KUSHIDA in mid motion and landed a gigantic tilt-a-whirl slam. Ospreay hit the imploding 450 slam but KUSHIDA grabbed the bottom rope right before the three count. Ospreay went for the Ozcutter but KUSHIDA grabbed him and applied the hoverboard lock.

Ospreay escaped, hit the ropes and did something resembling a Canadian destroyer DDT on KUSHIDA. He fired back, grabbing Ospreay and destroying him with kicks to the face and the back of the head. He grabbed Ospreay and went to start the Back to the Future on the top rope, but Ospreay slipped to the apron, springboarded and landed a cutter. He hit his new move, a spinning slam called the Stormbreaker and connected for the win.

Ospreay was celebrating when suddenly the lights went out. A Bone Soldier vignette aired, then Tama Tonga came to the ring. He served as a distraction to the new, much more ripped Bone Soldier who jumped Ospreay from behind. Tonga introduced him as the new Bone Soldier, then unmasked him, revealing it to be none other than Taiji Ishimori. The two hugged as they threw up the too sweet sign.

Kazuchika Okada defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to retain the IWGP Heavyweight title

This was a fantastic match, with the last few minutes being excellent. The crowd finally woke up and made this a great bout as well. I don’t know if this will be up there with some of their best matches, but the two continue to prove that they have terrific chemistry with one another, and their feud continues to be one of the best of this decade.

They keep things slow, focusing on headlocks and reversals. Tanahashi focuses on Okada’s legs, but Okada grabs Tanahashi, puts him on the top rope and connects with a draping DDT. Okada is in control until Tanahashi starts firing back, but Okada gets the better of it.

The pace starts to pick up as Tanahashi connects with a forearm shot and a running dropkick to the corner. Okada fires back with a neckbreaker on the knee and does the Rainmaker pose, but Tanahashi gets in his face. Okada is sent to the outside, where Tanahashi unleashes a giant high fly flow to the floor. Tanahashi picks up Okada as he tries to go for a running slingblade, but Okada grabs him instead and plants him with a tombstone.

Okada pelted Tanahashi with forearm shots but Tanahashi starts to fire back, hitting a twist and shout and connecting with the slingblade. He goes for a high fly flow but Okada dodges. He manages to dropkick Tanahashi in the back of the head and goes for a rainmaker, but Tanahashi connects with another slingblade.

Okada tries to hit the tombstone, but Tanahashi refuses to be lifted up and fights back. Okada dropkicks Tanahashi, but Tanahashi comes back and hits a tombstone of his own. He hits a high fly flow, then goes for a second but Okada gets the knees up. Tanahashi dodges a rainmaker attempt, then another and connects with a dragon suplex. An amazing sequence sends both guys to the floor in amazing fashion.

Tanahashi goes for a high fly flow but Okada dropkicks Tanahashi in mid air. Okada goes for the rainmaker, but Tanahashi counters with one of his own but Okada kicks out at one. Okada and Tanahashi slap either other silly, with Okada maintaining wrist control. Tanahashi slaps him away and goes to hit the ropes, but Okada grabs Tanahashi by the tights, brings him back in and finally connects with the rainmaker for the win, breaking the record for most title defenses with 12.

Gedo entered the ring and cut a promo, hyping up Okada. The champion said he has three things to say. First, he has respect for Tanahashi. Two, victory number twelve, task completed. He is focused on being the best IWGP champion there is. He has no number three. He wonders who the next challenger is. He lists all of the people he’s faced, and mentions that the last time he was in Osaka, he went to a time limit draw. He calls out Kenny Omega.

Okada mentions that it is currently tied between them, so let’s do it again and forget time limits. Omega said that they should do a two out of three falls match. Okada was fine with that. He said he’ll show him what’s next at Osaka Jo Hall. The two stare down one another before Omega leaves.

Okada finishes his promo, saying he’ll make it to number 13. Streamers fill the arena as the show closes. It was a two match show, but the two matches were really good so it’s worth your time checking them out.

Chris Jericho reportedly heading back to New Japan Pro Wrestling

Chris Jericho may be heading back to New Japan sooner than you think.

PWInsider reported this afternoon that Chris Jericho will be heading to Japan to participate in the upcoming Wrestling Dontaku events that will take place over the next two days. The report says that he will appear to set up an angle for next month’s Dominion event on June 9 in Osaka Jo Hall.

Jericho participated at this year’s WrestleKingdom 12 event, losing to Kenny Omega in a no disqualification match. The next night at New Year’s Dash, Jericho jumped Tetsuya Naito after a match and the two went at it. Since then, Jericho has largely disappeared from the pro wrestling scene, focusing on touring with his band. He most recently worked the Greatest Royal Rumble event on April 27.

Back in March, Jericho said on Twitter that he wouldn’t be going back to New Japan, though in the past he has not been that transparent about his future plans in order to keep an element of surprise as to what he’ll do next.

NJPW Road to Wrestling Dontaku results: CHAOS vs. Team New Japan

New Japan kicked off the Road to Wrestling Dontaku tour with a star-powered main event on Friday.

The first of two consecutive nights at Korakuen Hall was capped by an elimination match featuring four of the five singles champions in the promotion, as well as the top contender for the IWGP Heavyweight title, longtime company ace, Hiroshi Tanahashi.

Tana is set to challenge champ Kazuchika Okada for the promotion’s most prestigious title at Wrestling Dontaku next month. But first, the two and their respective stablemates will do battle in a series of tag matches on this tour.

Below are the night one results:

– Tetsuhiro Yagi defeated Yuya Uemura

Yagi won via submission with a Boston crab.

– Manabu Nakanishi defeated Tomoyuki Oka

Nakanishi won via submission with an Argentine backbreaker.

– Tiger Mask, Yuji Nagata & Shota Umino defeated Togi Makabe, Ryusuke Taguchi & Ren Narita

Tiger Mask got the win for his team, pinning Narita after a Tiger Driver.

– Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & Takashi Iizuka defeated Roppongi 3K (SHO, YOH & Rocky Romero)

Taichi pinned SHO after a Taichi Style Last Ride

– Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Toa Henare

Match ended when Ishii pinned Henare after a Vertical Brainbuster.

– BUSHI & Hirmou Takahashi & IWGP Tag Team Champions EVIL & SANADA defeated Killer Elite Squad & IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru

The Suzui-gun team jumped the LIJ team before the bell and cleared the ring, staying true to the Suzuki brand. SANADA fired back and hit Archer with a sweet dropkick, but was cut off by Kanemaru when going for the Paradise Lock. Kanemaru ended up in the hold himself, which didn’t get as big of a reaction as it typically does. Archer hit a Pounce and Suzuki-gun asserted control of the match.

SANADA was left to fend for himself for several minutes, until Takahashi made it back to the apron and got a tag. He scored a nearfall on Desperado after a low dropkick. EVIL tagged in and did some spots with Smith, who got a nearfall after a suplex. He scored another nearfall after a bodypress from Archer.

Archer missed the Hart Attack, and EVIL hit Smith with a DDT. BUSHI and Kanemaru tagged in, and the finish saw BUSHI kick out of Deep Impact and small package Kanemaru to score the pinfall for Los Ingobernables.

There was nothing wrong with this, but it didn’t have nearly the heat that you would expect from a semi-main at Korakuen.

– Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson, David Finlay, Michael Elgin & KUSHIDA defeated IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada, NEVER Openweight Champion Hirooki Goto, IWGP United States Champion Jay White, IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay & YOSHI-HASHI in an elimination match

Tana did Taguchi’s captain spot and everyone ran wild on Jay White. Finlay looked good, and I continue to be impressed with the intensity he has shown in the early stages of his U.S. title quest. Finlay was cut off by the Chaos team, and Ospreay and White went to work on him. Ospreay had kinesio tape across his neck and traps.

Okada and Tana had a staredown, with the Ace attempting to take the Rainmaker’s focus away from attacking Finlay. Okada used a chinlock and transitioned to a standing side headlock, but Finlay used a suplex to escape and tagged in Tana. Tana ran wild on the entire Chaos team, including hitting a duel Dragon Screw on White and Goto.

Tana and Okada paired off and did a sequence together, which included Okada bumping a lot for Tana. Okada looked like he was hurting. Ospreay got a tag, and his next challenger, KUSHIDa, tagged in fr a great back and forth. KUSHIDA worked over Ospreay’s neck. Ospreay hit a 619, and KUSHIDA countered a springboard elbow attempt into a flying armbar. They went to the apron and teased a Spanish Fly, playing off the last Ospreay/Scurll match, bt Ospreay blocked it.

The eliminations started coming quickly near the fifteen minute mark, as Ospreay and KUSHIDA both went out when Ospreay hit a vertical suplex on KUSHIDA on the apron, and they rolled to the floor. Elgin tossed out YOSHI-HASHI. Goto tossed Elgin. Goto was thrown out by Juice, his next challenger. Juice was quickly thrown out by Okada.

Okada and Tana did another series of spots, and Okada applied the Cobra Clutch, but Tana slipped out and applied the Cloverleaf. White saved for Okada. Okada hit a dropkick to a prone Tanahashi as he sat on the top rope. They teased a duel elimination on the apron, and both were knocked to the floor by White and Finlay, leaving them the focal point of the closing minutes of the bout.

Finlay got a nearfall with a backbreaker, but White took control of the match, repeatedly firing Finlay into the turnbuckle pad. White tossed Finlay to the apron and teased a suplex to the floor, but tossed him back inside and hit one of his own.

The finish saw Finlay go for a cutter, dodge a Blade Runner, then hit the cutter, and clothesline White over the top for the victory. This was fun once they got down to the eliminations.

I understand the reasoning behind the advent of these elimination matches, in that they provide a way to beat guys without them having to do jobs, which is useful when booking some variation of the same tag match night after night on these tours. That said, the winners and losers of them have a lot less impact.

Coming out of Sakura Genesis, New Japan Pro Wrestling has revealed the cards for the Wrestling Dontaku tour.

NJPW Wrestling Dontaku live results: Okada faces Bad Luck Fale

NJPW’s Wrestling Dontaku event takes place tonight in Fukuoka with three titles on the line.

In the main event, Kazuchika Okada will defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Bad Luck Fale, who destroyed him mercilessly following a tough title defense against Katsuyori Shibata at Sakura Genesis. In the buildup to this match, Fale has been using Okada’s tombstone to his advantage, even pinning Okada once with the maneuver in a tag match. It will be interesting to see if Fale’s new move plays a role tonight.

In the co-main event, Kenny Omega will take on Tomohiro Ishii. It seems based on positioning, whoever wins this match may challenge the winner of the main event in the future.

The other title matches include War Machine defending the IWGP Tag Team titles against Tencozy and Guerrillas of Destiny in a three-way bout. The NEVER Six-Man titles are also on the line as champions Taguchi Japan (Hiroshi Tanahashi, Ricochet & Ryusuke Taguchi) defend against Los Ingobernable members EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI.

The card rounds off with Cody taking on David Finlay, a six-man tag match featuring Tiger Mask, Tiger Mask W & Togi Makabe taking on Jushin Thunder Liger, Manabu Nakanishi & Yuji Nagata, and other assorted six-man and regular tag team matches.

Announcements for this year’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament are also expected.

Our live coverage begins at 4 a.m. ET/1 a.m. PT. There will be English commentary for the show on NJPW World.

**********

Yoshitatsu and Hirai Kawato defeated Katsuya Kitamura and Takayuki Oka

This was an okay opener. Yoshitatsu worked a lot of the match. When Oka and Kawato were in it was pretty good. Oka has the makings of a future star and Kitamura will probably be one too due to his immense size. After some back and forth, Yoshitatsu grapevined Kitamura’s legs and rolled him on his stomach for a submission win.

YOSHI-HASHI and Will Ospreay defeated Yujiro Takahashi and Chase Owens

Perfectly fine match that the crowd was into. Owens and YOSHI-HASHI worked a lot of the match. Ospreay came in to do his great Fosbury flop. Owens went for the package piledriver but YOSHI-HASHI escaped and locked in Karma for the submission.

Tiger Mask, Tiger Mask W and Togi Makabe defeated Jushin Thunder Liger, Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi

This was pretty good. Tiger Mask W looked great and the finishing moments where both Tiger Masks did dives to the floor was cool too. Togi Makabe took out Nakanishi then pinned him with the King Kong knee drop.

Hirooki Goto, Roppongi Vice, Jado and Toru Yano defeated Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Taichi, Taka Michinoku, El Desperado and Minoru Suzuki

I liked this match as it was one of those matches where everyone battled one another, keeping the action hot throughout. A lot of typical Suzuki-gun stuff with the brawling around the ring, Taichi using the bell hammer, etc. Goto picked up the win for his team with the GTR on Taka Michinoku.

Suzuki came into the ring after the match and had a pull apart brawl. After everyone was separated, Suzuki cut a promo, saying don’t let your Chaos stablemates hold you back. They got in another fight before eventually bailing.

Cody defeated David Finlay

Cody waffled Finlay with an Alabama Slam on the mat early. Mostly solid back and forth, nothing too fancy but was perfectly alright. Finlay went for an uppercut off the top rope but Cody grabbed him and transitioned into the Crossroads for the win.

Cody takes the mic after the match, telling New Japan to bring him someone bigger, someone stronger. They will find out what everyone already knows in their bones and in their soul — the worst nightmare happens when your eyes are open, and it’s me.

Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi defeated KUSHIDA and Juice Robinson

This was pretty good, the action was hot and there’s a big story here based on how the situation between KUSHIDA and Hiromu Takahashi is unfolding. KUSHIDA became a wildman the minute he and Hiromu interacted, brawling all over the arena. Naito came him and gave him a bodyslam on a raised platform in the crowd. KUSHIDA looked great in this match, came off as super aggressive following the big loss last month. He wiped both of his opponents out with a big tope con hilo. Naito throws Juice into the barricade and helps Takahashi lay out KUSHIDA, allowing Takahashi to pick up the win over KUSHIDA after laying him out with the time bomb.

Here are the brackets for this year’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament:

A Block
Jushin Thunder Liger
Ricochet
Dragon Lee
Will Ospreay
Marty Scurll
Taichi
Taka Michinoku
Hiromu Takahashi

B Block
Tiger Mask
Ryusuke Taguchi
KUSHIDA
Volador Jr
ACH
Kanemaru
Desperado
BUSHI

War Machine defeated Guerillas of Destiny and Tencozy to retain the IWGP tag team titles

This was good as action was frequent throughout, crowd was hot and everyone worked well together. War Machine is one of the hardest working teams out there which is pretty amazing given their size. A lot of spots between all three teams. Tenzan went for a moonsault but Rowe grabbed him and Hanson landed with Fallout, giving them the win.

War Machine bowed to the fans after the match, but Guerillas of Destiny used this as an opportune time to jump them after the match with the belts, Tama Tonga saying “This is ours”, so they’re staying the course with this feud..

EVIL, SANADA and BUSHI defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Ricochet and Ryusuke Taguchi to win the NEVER Six Man titles

There was one point of the match where Taguchi was isolated on the top rope as all of LIJ were staring at him. He tried to make his way by them but got destroyed. All three of the faces eventually managed stereo ankle locks. Tanahashi hit the sling blade and went for the high fly flow but EVIL got the knees up.

Taguchi gains the advantage for his team and secures another ankle lock. BUSHI taps, but the referee it out of the ring recovering from a bump. Taguchi releases the hold but BUSHI mists him in response. He lays him out with the MX but Taguchi’s teammates break it up. SANADA and EVIL lay them both out and BUSHI hits the MX for the second time to win the titles. Really great match with lots of good tandem work and some pretty fun spots.

Kenny Omega defeated Tomohiro Ishii

A completely tremendous match, easily the best thing on the show and a true testament to both men’s skills. They kept a high pace for the majority of the match and never felt like it was dull.

They start off hot early, hitting Omega at one point in the match hit a big time crossbody off the top rope and through the barricade. They go back into the ring and trade one hot move after another. Omega tries for the One Winged Angel but Ishii blocks and hits a lariat, then hits another but Omega kicks out. Ishii hits his version of the One Winged Angel except hit turns into a neckbreaker on the knee.

Omega fires back with a reverse rana and a giant lariat, still a part of this match. He hits the v-trigger then goes for the One Winged Angel but Ishii counters with a reverse rana. Yep, you read that right. He hits a lariat after that but doesn’t get it.

They go into a forearm battle, with Ishii losing after Omega switches to a knee under the chin. A second brings Ishii down. Omega follows with a brainbuster than lands the One Winged Angel for the win.

Kazuchika Okada defeated Bad Luck Fale to retain the IWGP Heavyweight title

Great main event with some really great callbacks to other matches on this tour. They made Fale look like a super strong challenger, dominating Okada throughout. The story with the tombstone played well here too because not only did he manage to land one of his own on Fale, he also kicked out Fale’s tombstone too.

Okada tries to gain an advantage early but Fale easily dominates. He takes him to the outside where he teases a Bad Luck Fall, but Okada escapes. Fale instead manages to ram Okada’s back to the ring post. Fale works him over for a while until Okada comes back with a DDT, then takes Fale to the outside where he flies over the guardrail, taking down Fale with a crossbody.

He tries for a bodyslam, or even his tombstone, but Fale manages to overpower him each time he tries to execute. Fale tries to charge him in a corner but Okada instead dropkicks him in the opposite corner. Okada hits the elbow and tries for a rainmaker but Fale counters with a bear hug. He hits the grenade but Okada kicks out. Fale tries for the tombstone but Okada escapes, then manages to land a dropkick. He tries once again for a tombstone…and it connects! He tries for the rainmaker but Fale immediately comes back with a clothesline of his own and follows that with a spear.

Fale goes for the Bad Luck Fall but Okada escapes, so instead he follows with the grenade then lands the tombstone he’s been delivering to Okada on the tour, but Okada kicks out of it. He follows with another Bad Luck Fall attempt, but Okada escapes and manages to hit a rainmaker, then two, then pins Fale with a third.

The rest of Bullet Club, including Kenny Omega, come out after the match to tend to Fale. After a short ceremony, Okada takes a mic and calls out Omega, who was helping Fale to the back. He comes to the ring and they have a staredown. Omega then makes his exit but not before making comments to the camera about Okada not being the champion people want.

Gedo takes the mic from here and cuts a promo to close out the show. Kevin Kelly mentioned that the next IWGP title match would most likely be at Dominion.

NJPW reveals cards for Wrestling Dontaku and Wrestling Toyonokuni

New Japan Pro Wrestling announced the lineups for Wrestling Toyonokuni and Wrestling Dontaku at a press conference this morning.

The shows will be headlined by title matches that were set up at Sakura Genesis. NJPW Wrestling Dontaku results: Super Juniors lineups; IWGP champ Naito vs. Ishii

Captain New Japan & Juice Robinson vs. Bad Luck Fale & Yujiro Takahashi

This did not last long at all. Fale pinned Captain New Japan quickly with the grenade in under 3 minutes. I don’t know why Yoshitatsu let this guy in his Bullet Club Hunter club, he’s worthless in every way.

Tiger Mask & Ryusuke Taguchi & Jay White & David Finlay vs. Kazushi Sakuraba & Yoshi-Hashi & Will Ospreay & Gedo

Fun little match. Usual good eight man match you’d see on the first half of any New Japan show. Ospreay’s offense is so dynamic. He had a great dynamic with Finlay as they did some fun spots together. He did the Sasuke special at one point during the match, taking everyone out in the process. He ended up getting the win for his team after a springboard diamond cutter.

Rocky Romero & Trent Baretta vs. IWGP Junior Tag Champs Matt Sydal & Ricochet

Really good match. I think they’ve had better, but this built up nicely and had some good near falls toward the end. RPG Vice had the heat early. Ricochet did this great move where he caught Baretta in mid air while he was executing a tornado DDT, countered into a northern lights suplex, floated over then gave him a brainbuster. Sydal gave Baretta a reverse rana, then aided Ricochet in laying out Romero with a double Benadryller. They followed with the stereo shooting star presses and pinned RPG Vice to regain the junior titles.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Michael Elgin & Yoshitatsu vs. NEVER Six-Man Tag Champ Kenny Omega & Young Bucks for Never

Good match, though like the previous match, their last bout was a bit better. Unlike their previous match, where they had crazy spots just about everywhere, they mostly kept this in the ring for most of the match. Elgin made a great comeback for his team. Tanahashi and Omega were in there when Omega went to use the hairspray but it hit Tiger Hattori instead. Elite acted like they were helping him, but then Omega low blowed him because he’s mean.

That’s when the weapons were brought out. Elgin powerbombed Matt Jackson into a ladder, but Omega came back and with the help of the Bucks, powerbombed Elgin through a table on the floor. They gave Yoshitatsu the triple kick, then Omega pinned Yoshitatsu with the One Winged Angel to win the titles.

Tanahashi cut a promo after the match, asking Kenny Omega for a rematch, saying he is the next Intercontinental champion. Kenny said no, but then took out the ladder and said if he wanted a ladder match, then he would say yes. They both climbed to the top of the ladder and shook hands, so it’s on.

Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma vs. Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa for IWGP tag team titles

Okay match, mostly picked up toward the end. Guerrillas of Destiny just lack something here. Makabe and Honma are great singles guys, and have had great matches but this program just doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere. Tama Tonga and Makabe had some great back and forth that got the crowd into the bout. Tonga and Tanga took out Makabe on the outside as they cornered Honma. He tried to fight his way out of losing, but didn’t work as the brothers laid out Honma with their finish to retain the titles.

This year’s Best of the Super Junior lineups:

  • A Block: Kushida, Ryusuke Taguchi, Kyle O’Reilly, Matt Sydal, Rocky Romero, Gedo, Bushi, Matt Jackson
  • B Block: Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask, Nick Jackson, Will Ospreay, Trent Beretta, Bobby Fish, Ricochet, Volador Jr.

No real surprises other than Volador Jr. He and Will Ospreay make the B block far more interesting. I’d really like to see how their singles match goes down.

Katsuyori Shibata vs. Yuji Nagata for Never title

Good match. Started off slow with some mat wrestling, then picked up from there. They had a better G1 match, but this was good stuff while it lasted. Shibata went for the penalty kick but Nagata grabbed him and gave him a big boot and backdrop driver. Shibata mounted a comeback but Nagata put him down on the ground, gave him a penalty kick and pinned him with the backdrop driver to win the title.  Shinpei Nogami, the biggest fan of Yuji Nagata you’ll ever see, freaked out after the match and kept screaming “JUSTICE!”

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Kushida vs. Jushin Liger

Really good match. Different than most junior heavyweight matches. Kushida is one of th best all around workers in wrestling today just by how he’s able to adjust to any style and have a great match no matter what.

This was a more traditional match, working on body parts and applying submissions. Liger worked on Kushida’s leg early in the bout and kept working on it throughout. Liger can’t fly like he did back in the day but as far as technical wrestling goes he’s really good. Liger hit the shotei once, then went for it again but Kushida blocked it and countered with the hoverboard lock. Liger took a while, but eventually submitted.

Kushida grabbed a mic and said that he’d like to see Liger wrestle for many years to come. Liger said if the champion thinks so, he might have to challenge again down the line.

Hirooki Goto vs. Evil

Another good match. Kinda short, but it was explosive as they went at right away. A lot of brawling, and a lot of back and forth stiff shots. Goto kicked out of a fireman’s carry into a spinebuster, but then Evil gave him the STO and pinned him clean in the middle, just like that. Pretty surprising.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Sanada

Really good match. Another match that had some good back and forth early. Sanada’s really good, definitely upper midcard/main event kind of character. Okada did the rainmaker pose but Sanada came back and put him in the Skull End submission. He missed the moonsault. Okada went to go for the rainmaker but Sanada kept dodging and trying for the Skull End. Sanada got him back down to the floor but Okada transitioned back to the tombstone, laid out Sanada with that then pinned him with the rainmaker. That’d probably put him in line for a rematch against Naito soon.

IWGP Champion Tetsuya Naito vs. Tomohiro Ishii

Awesome match, especially in the last ten minutes or so. Sure enough, Okada was out there with Ishii to second him, along with Gedo. They had a straightforward match for a while, pretty solid back and forth offering until Evil interfered, hitting Ishii with a steel chair. Ishii was working on Naito’s leg and had an ankle lock in as Chaos warded off Los Ingobernables.

Eventually they got free, but Ishii held his own until Okada made the save. Ishii hit the sliding D and went for a brainbuster but Naito countered with a DDT. Ishii countered the Destino and laid him out with an inverted brainbuster (that’s a new one!) for a nearfall. Finally, Ishii whipped Naito across the ropes but he came back with a forearm, then pinned him with Destino to retain the title.

Okada took shirt off and stared down Naito after the match. He didn’t respond at first, but eventually they had a staredown as Okada left. After all the ceremonies, Naito cut a promo asking Kidani to see the pop he’s getting in front of his crowd, and that he knows Okada wants a title shot but he has to “tranquillo”.

– This was a really good show. Everything was good for the most part, with the IWGP and Jr. title matches being really exceptional.
