December 28, 2020 Observer Newsletter: WWE TLC review, Tokyo Dome preview, more

WWE’s last PPV show of the year, TLC, was a unique show, great on performance, good on drama, and weird on ending.

It’s funny because the two key matches, Drew McIntyre vs. A.J. Styles for the WWE title and Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens for the Universal title had great individual performances, and the latter from a dramatic standpoint was among the WWE’s best matches of the year.

But it’s funny, because it’s also everything that was bad about New Japan pro wrestling with the same story in two different matches. There was no subtlety with the interference. McIntyre essentially had three opponents, Styles, The Miz and John Morrison with a 7-foot-3 giant at ringside who ended up helping him at one point by going after Miz & Morrison. But he overcame all that at the end.

Owens had a handicap match with Reigns and Jey Uso, and like with McIntyre, for all that time, nobody kicked out Uso and nobody helped Owens.

January 15, 2018 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 12 review, plus tons of news

Wrestle Kingdom 12, headlined by Kazuchika Okada’s retaining the IWGP title over Tetsuya Naito and Kenny Omega beating Chris Jericho in a U.S. title match was the biggest non-WWE pro wrestling event on a worldwide basis since the collapse of WCW.

The 1/4 show at the Tokyo Dome kicked off the year with what is likely to be a strong candidate for best show of the year, just as Wrestle Kingdom had won the same award in 2015 and 2016, and was a favorite to make it three in a row in 2017.

Whether the wrestling was as good as the other years is debatable, but for a number of reasons, this show was far bigger, in both attendance, market value and overall interest.

The appearance of Jericho brought a new fan base that watched new Japan for the first time, either on New Japan World, AXS TV or through other means.

November 16, 2015 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Seth Rollins injury, Wrestle Kingdom 10 matches

There’s never a good time for a champion to go down, but the knee injury to WWE champion Seth Rollins (Colby Lopez, 29) on the first night of the company’s European tour exposed just how little depth the company has on top.

With Daniel Bryan out due to concussion issues, Randy Orton out due to shoulder surgery and John Cena on sabbatical, believed to be hosting a network reality television show, the company, on one of its biggest house show tours of the year, was left with one star babyface–Roman Reigns, and with Kevin Owens as the closest thing to a main star heel.

Rollins was wrestling Kane for the WWE title in the main event on 11/4 in Dublin.  Rollins did a spot where he came off the top rope with a sunset flip that was to continue into power bombing Kane off the top rope through a table.  However, on landing, Rollins’s right knee gave out and he collapsed.  He did get up and followed by power bombing Kane through the table, and finished the match, winning with a pedigree.

He was diagnosed with a torn ACL, a torn MCL and a torn medial meniscus.  He underwent reconstructive knee surgery on 11/10, performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas of the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, in Birmingham, AL.  He’s expected out of action for six to nine months, putting him out of WrestleMania and making SummerSlam 2016 as a likely return period.
