MJF says he has pitched a Wednesday Night Wars documentary to Tony Khan

A Wednesday Night Wars documentary? It could happen.

On Late Night Grin, MJF revealed that he had pitched the idea to Tony Khan, mentioning that they now have some key talent that worked in NXT during the time the two brands went head-to-head on Wednesday nights.

“We literally won and we have guys that work in our company now that were on the other side. It would be f****** sick. You can sit down [Adam Cole] and [Roderick Strong], Kyle [O’Reilly] and Swerve. You know, all these guys that were on the other side of the war…you can’t sit down Bobby Fish unfortunately…I mean folks, where’s the lie?,” he said, borrowing Fish’s infamous quote.

A few months before AEW Dynamite made its debut on TNT, WWE announced that NXT would be moving to the USA Network on Wednesday nights, competing head-to-head with Dynamite. On the first night of head-to-head competition, Dynamite scored a big win of 1.4 million viewers over NXT’s 891,000. AEW would go on to win most weeks until 2021, when WWE chose to move NXT to Tuesday nights where it has remained ever since.

Triple H discusses NXT’s move to Tuesdays, ‘imaginary war’ with AEW

In a recent interview, Triple H talked about NXT’s move to Tuesdays and their competition with AEW.

On Cheap Heat with Peter Rosenberg, Triple H explained that they weren’t just in competition with AEW, they were in competition with everyone and everything.

“The promotional opportunity for us is much better on a Tuesday,” he explained. “And also then not having to have a narrative where it’s just constantly about an imaginary war, or this imaginary battle. And, you know, people can say what they want, but the truth of the matter is you compete against everything. If you are creating a television product or content– that is the world we live in is content not television, not internet. It’s everything. So you’re constantly competing for eyeballs and time against everything under the sun, including sleep and time to do other things, and video games, and Tik Tok and everything else that’s out there.”

Triple H said he was thrilled with NXT moving to Tuesdays, as more talent will be able to shine through.

“Again, I’m thrilled with it, and I think the opportunity is the same as it was before, which is for talent to get out there live and show everything that they can do, and I’m a big believer in that talent will shine through, and they’ll get that opportunity and you’ll make bigger and bigger stars as time goes by,” he said. “But again, it’s about making stars and them having that opportunity not just the number every single week.”

NXT officially moved to its new Tuesday time slot on April 13. Going unopposed, NXT drew 805,000 while AEW Dynamite unopposed scored 1.219 million viewers.

NXT close on finalizing move to Tuesday starting after WrestleMania

It appears that the Wednesday Night War will be coming to an end as NXT and USA have been discussing moving the show to Tuesday nights — a conversation that may be in the final stages of being put into motion.

The targeted date for the move is April 13th — the first Tuesday after WrestleMania.

The Mat Men podcast was the first to report the story with our Dave Meltzer confirming. Meltzer couldn’t confirm whether it’s a done deal, but that if not, they are very close, adding it’s been heavily talked about over the last seven days.

He also added that almost all the key NXT personnel haven’t been told about a move.

If the move happens, it would leave the Wednesday 8 PM Eastern timeslot to AEW who moved head-to-head against NXT when they launched Dynamite in October 2019. MLW also runs on Wednesday nights, but airs before both shows.

It was believed that when NBC announced a move to fold NBC Sports Network later this year and move some of that programming to USA, the National Hockey League would present a conflict for NXT due to their Wednesday night slot on the NBC Sports Network. However, on the February investors call, WWE president Nick Khan said the shutdown would not affect or impact Raw or NXT.

It’s unknown at this point what precipitated this conversation at this point in time.

While Dynamite would benefit from the move, Impact Wrestling likely would not as they also air from 8-10 PM Eastern on AXS TV and Twitch with AEW Dark airing on YouTube starting at 7 PM Eastern.

When asked repeatedly over the last year plus about moving NXT off Wednesdays, Paul “HHH” Levesque reaffirmed their stance on playing the long game and questioned why no one asked “anyone else” about moving since they were there first.

From a conference call last September, Levesque said there are always conversations around the placement of their products all the time.

“It comes down to a question of where the show best sits, not only for us, but our partners and wherever they want to go to. We’re open to doing the best business we can, but it’s not as simple as it’s our decision and we just put the show where we want,” he said.

This week’s AEW Dynamite to air in normal Wednesday time slot

The Wednesday Night Wars are set to resume this Wednesday.

AEW this evening confirmed that they will be airing Dynamite in its normal time slot. NXT will also return to its normal time slot after moving to Tuesdays for the last two weeks.

Dynamite was originally scheduled for a late one hour edition on midnight Thursday if a NBA game was scheduled. However, with the Denver Nuggets defeating the Los Angeles Clippers today, forcing a game seven on Tuesday, Dynamite will air in its normal timeslot.

Both NXT and AEW have had their schedules change in recent weeks, causing the two shows to air on different nights. NXT has aired for the last two weeks on Tuesdays due to potential NHL coverage on the USA Network. AEW has held shows on different nights of the week on TNT due to NBA playoffs.

Last week’s Dynamite scored 1,016,000 viewers, its highest number since last fall. Tuesday’s NXT rating had 838,000 viewers, up from its normal Wednesday numbers.

Influx of main roster stars expected for tonight’s NXT

There will be a major influx of main roster stars on NXT tonight in Winter Park, FL.

HHH announced at the end of Raw that NXT is opening the doors to Raw and Smackdown, a move done to attempt to win the night for the first time since there has been a head-to-head battle between NXT and AEW Dynamite.

Tonight’s battle will be big name stars vs. big matches, and historically, stars trump matches and it would have to be a major moral defeat for NXT to throw this much out and not win the night. But it would be the first time since week one where they would be favored to win.

Those who have been seen in the area already today include Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, Shorty G, Mustafa Ali, King Corbin, Montez Ford, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville.

Announced for AEW Dynamite tonight is Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin, Nick Jackson vs. Fenix, Santana & Ortiz vs. Private Party, Britt Baker vs. Hikaru Shida and a Dynamite Dozen battle royal where the last two participants remaining will battle it out on next week’s edition of Dynamite with the winner receiving a diamond ring.

WWE NXT results: Samoa Joe vs. Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin, Alex Riley returns!

  • The Big News: Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe both won the #1 Contender’s triple threat match over Baron Corbin
  • The Medium News: Jason Jordan and Chad Gable are now AMERICAN ALPHA!
  • The Little Beaver-sized News: Alex Riley is back. No really.

I am not spoiling anything, but I cannot wait to go to NXT Takeover: Dallas.

American Alpha defeated Blake & Murphy (w/Alexa Bliss)

American Alpha is the new name for Jason Jordan & Chad Gable. Tonight they are here to do battle with yet another former set of Tag Team Champions. They have beaten The Vaudevillians and The Ascension and are now here to do battle with Blake & Murphy. They still have the Lucha Dragons and the Wyatt Family to go. Blake and Murphy were outclassed by Gable at one point. Murphy was trying to get the heat, but Gable took out both men by himself like it was nothing. The fans chanted that Blake’s top know looked stupid. Gable used a hip toss on Murphy that looked more like a power slam.

After being whooped by Gable, Murphy injured his knee coming down from a leapfrog. Blake tried attacking Gable from behind and IT’S A MIRACLE! MURPHY IS HEALTHY AGAIN! The heels took over briefly until Gable back dropped Blake out of the ring. Jordan got the hot tag and it was Full Suplex University! Jordan suplexed both men time and again before winning with their double team move.

– Alex interviewed Emma and Dana Brooke. Next week, Emma will face Carmella. Dana pointed out that the tag match last week was all about Bayley and had nothing to do with Carmella. They mocked Carmella for losing to Blue Pants and said Emma will have no problem with her next week.

– We got an Asuka video package.

Nia Jax (w/Eva Marie) pinned Liv Morgan

Brian Witner’s favorite wrestler is in the corner of Nia Jax. Yeah, he’s the only one. Anyway Liv Morgan looks like a low rent Kaitlyn and Nia destroyed her. Something tells me this match was total crap live as we got more than one obvious edit. Nia won with a legdrop.

– Carmella cut a promo saying she would beat Emma all by herself, calling the Emmalution a freaking joke. Enzo and Cass took over and called Dash & Dawson fat. Enzo said he almost beat up the guy pumping his gas because he thought it was Dash and Dawson.

– A Baron Corbin video aired.

– Another heel Vaudevillians video aired. THEY ARE NO LONGER SMILING!

Alex Riley pinned Bull Dempsey

Bull has yet another new theme. No seriously. Alex Riley is back. Remember when he quit his NXT announcing job to go after Kevin Owens? How many people does Owens have unfinished storylines with at this point? The announcers talked about how they didn’t even know Riley was here. Well the announcer and the guy who cues the music certainly knew. Riley almost won with a neck breaker and did win with a knee to the face. No one cared. Remember when Riley when randomly get good reactions? Well this was not one of those nights.

Riley was in a dark corner drinking water. He said the last 4 months he has sent texts and emails to Stamford, Connecticut and got 0 replies. I think Vince was like “Who?” Anyway, Riley was upset because NXT had video packages for Sami Zayn’s return and in depth profiles on Apollo Crews and nothing about Riley.

Elias Sampson pinned John Skylar

John Skylar has HHH’s logo on the ass of his trunks. Or at least a logo that looks a lot like it. This match was fine. It was better than Sampson’s other squash matches, but that’s like saying being shot in the foot is better than being shot in the head. Elias won with a spinning neck breaker.

– The Hype Bros were randomly talking about The Vaudevillians’ promo packages, bro. They became really annoying, bro, when talking about going clubbing, bro. Bro, then they talked about Zubaz, bro and Mojo watching Ryder sleep, bro. They said bro in 30 seconds more than Vince Russo could ever dream of, bro.

– Next week is Finn Balor vs Apollo Crews in a non-title match.

Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe both won the #1 Contender’s Triple Threat Match when they made Baron Corbin tap out.

I always love a good fight and that’s what this was. It was three guys who all had one goal and that was to win and become the #1 contender. Joe tore through both men for several minutes. He kept knocking Baron down and out, outside the ring, while beating on the smaller Zayn. Zayn was finally able to dispose of Joe, but as soon as he did that he ran right into Corbin. Poor guy could not catch a break.

Sami finally caught a break thanks to the commercial break. Zayn fired up as we came back from commercial and hit an amazing dive over the top rope to both men outside. Corbin almost pinned Zayn with a Black Hole Slam. Joe at one point used a drop toe hold to Sami where Zayn landed in a pinfall on Corbin. The referee didn’t even attempt to count since Joe was doing his running back splash to both men.

Zayn nearly got a win with a Blue Thunder Bomb on Corbin, but after Baron kicked out, Joe yanked Sami outside the ring and choked him out with the Coquina Clutch. Zayn had to wake up because Corbin had Joe pinned with End of Days and he had to break it up. Zayn had Corbin pinned again, this time with the Halluva Kick, but Joe broke it up. Zayn slapped the Sharpshooter on Corbin…and Joe ran in to put the Crossface on Baron and he had no choice but to tap out.

Both Zayn and Joe argued that their submission was the one to cause Corbin to tap out. Mr. Regal walked out to talk to the referee. Mr. Regal said he had to go review the tape of the match. The fans had no idea what they were saying and everyone just walked off.
