DragonKingKarl: Spring 1986 in pro wrestling history

Welcome to the latest DragonKingKarl Show as Karl Stern continues his long form history of pro wrestling series, taken from the pages of the DragonKingKarl’s 1986-1987 Pro Wrestling Omnibus.

Business is starting to slump temporarily in the wake of all the big shows in the spring of 1986. Stan Hansen has the AWA World heavyweight title stripped from him, Antonio Inoki is having big matches in Japan, and World Class continues to have various Von Erich problems.

But 1987 is coming and the first few chess pieces for that record-shattering year are starting to fall into place.

DragonKingKarl: June 10, 1986 Wrestling Observer Newsletter rewind

This week on a new DragonKingKarl Show, Karl Stern continues to take a look back at 1986 from my latest book, DragonKingKarl’s 1986-1987 Pro Wrestling Omnibus.

He takes a deep dive into the June 10, 1986, issue of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter where he looks at major stories involving Billy Jack Haynes leaving the Pacific Northwest territory for the WWF, major problems in Fritz Von Erich’s World Class Championship Wrestling, and the upcoming NWA Great American Bash Tour.

DragonKingKarl: Wrestling Observer Newsletter March 3, 1986 discussion

Karl Stern is celebrating the debut of his latest book, DragonKingKarl’s 1986-1987 Pro Wrestling Omnibus, with a detailed look back at the March 3, 1986, issue of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

This issue of the Observer discussed such stories as World Class Championship Wrestling pulling out of the NWA and crowning their own World champion.

Plus, the hype for WWF WrestleMania II, Saturday Night’s Main Event, Yoshiaki Yatsu trying to get into the Olympics, and Florida’s Battle of the Belts card.

January 9, 2008 Observer Newsletter: ROH Final Battle tapings, Triumph & Tragedy of WCCW DVD review

Ring of Honor taped its fifth PPV, scheduled for March, as the first of two weekend “Final Battle” shows at the Manhattan Center. But from most accounts, the spectacular show was the Sunday card that wasn’t taped, even with the company getting the injury bug the night before.

Champion Nigel McGuiness had his face jammed into the guard rail when hit with a tope by Austin Aries. He needed 14 stitches, suffered a broken nose and had a mild concussion which resulted in him not defending the title as scheduled the second night. Partially due to not having the singles title match advertised, the decision was made to do a previously unplanned tag team title change with Tyler Black & Jimmy Jacobs of the Age of the Fall beating Mark & Jay Briscoe.

McGuiness did a promo the next night causing a weird reaction. I’d been led to believe it was the kind of reaction John Cena would get, but it really wasn’t. It appeared to be about 15-20% or so booing him, and chanting “Drop the belt,” while the vast majority were behind him. Still, you could see that was enough that it unnerved him.

WCCW announcer Bill Mercer passes away at 99 years old

Bill Mercer — the voice of the former World Class Championship Wrestling — passed away Sunday at the age of 99.

Dave Meltzer will have more on the life and times of Mercer on the next Wrestling Observer Radio and this Friday’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The Oklahoma native was a member of both the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and Texas Sports Hall of Fame, working as an announcer in wrestling, baseball, football and basketball. He also was the on-air talent for a Dallas radio station during the assassination of John F. Kennedy Jr. and was the first to break the news that Kennedy’s killer — Lee Harvey Oswald — would be charged with his murder.

The United States Navy veteran handled play-by-play duties for MLB’s Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers in addition to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and college football at different points in his career.

Mercer’s wrestling career began in the 1950s in Oklahoma and continued when he relocated to Texas, calling matches from the famed Dallas Sportatorium. In 1976, Mercer took over from the retiring Dan Coates for Saturday Night Wrestling and worked for WCCW from 1982-1987 before leaving for Wild West Wrestling.

He eventually returned for some sporadic appearances near the end of WCCW’s run. He was also part owner of an attempted WCCW revival called World Class II in 1997 that lasted just a year.

In another fun fact, while he was a broadcaster for the University of North Texas, he called games that featured players that would go on to become Steve Austin and Kevin Von Erich.

Vinny & Craig & Shawn Show: Live Q&A plus part one of WCCW Christmas Star Wars 82

Vinny returns with Craig and Shawn! With no Bryan, there’s no Granny this week so the show begins with a live Q&A between the three. Then it’s a recap of the first part of WCCW Christmas Star Wars from 1982 featuring a Six-Man Tag Team title match featuring Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, and David Von Erich followed by a battle royal for a $10,000 check, at least that’s what they said. A fun show as always, so check it out!

JNPO: Holt McCallany on becoming Fritz Von Erich in ‘The Iron Claw’

In an extended interview, actor Holt McCallany joined Josh Nason’s Punch-Out to talk about his upcoming new film “The Iron Claw” in which he plays the role of Fritz Von Erich, patriarch of the famed Texas wrestling clan.

Holt talked about his preparation and research for the role, which included training with WWE Hall of Famer Johnny Rodz in Brooklyn, New York, and how his body and mind felt as he literally began to learn the ropes of the business.

He also discussed his thoughts on who Fritz was vs. what the public perception may be, especially for those watching the film.

We also talked whether he had any interaction with Kevin Von Erich and the Oscar buzz that started recently about his portrayal of Fritz. We also briefly discussed his short-lived 2011 FX show “Lights Out” and whether he would have done anything differently.

“The Iron Claw” comes out domestically on Friday, December 22nd and this February in the United Kingdom.

DragonKing Dark: The dark side of World Class Championship Wrestling

My 100 darkest moments in pop culture history rolls on as this week, we return to the world of professional wrestling with, arguably, the first place many people think of when it comes to a lot of young deaths in wrestling: the Dallas, Texas-based World Class Championship Wrestling.

WCCW saw many wrestlers die young, the Von Erichs infamously of suicide (mostly), but there were multiple cocaine overdoses, and more.

Let’s look back at the dark side of World Class Championship Wrestling.
