MLW notes: Opera Cup update, Warhorse and Karlee Perez debut

This week’s episode of MLW Fusion: Alpha saw advancements in multiple storylines, as well as two new debuts and a big match set for next week.

The 2021 Opera Cup will see its first semifinal match on next week’s show as Davey Richards will take on Bobby Fish. Richards previously defeated Tom Lawlor in the first round of the tournament, while Fish was able to knock off Lee Moriarty.

The other semifinal, TJP vs. Calvin Tankman, will be taped this Saturday, November 6th at the War Chamber event. Despite being teased, Tankman won’t be withdrawing from the tournament after being on the receiving end of an Alex Kane attack last week. Kane is an alternate and was looking to get his spot.

The Tankman vs. TJP match was originally supposed to happen on last month’s Fightland TV taping, but TJP got hurt early and couldn’t do the match. Tankman took on Kane on that taping, but it’s assumed that match will now not make air as it was billed as the semifinal.

Former Lucha Underground star Catrina, now known as Karlee Perez, made her MLW debut on last night’s episode. Perez was a part of a special entrance for King Muertes before joining him at ringside for his IWA Caribbean Championship casket match with Tom Lawlor. Perez managed Muertes off and on in LU for three years and before that, she was in WWE as Maxine.

Popular independent wrestler Warhorse also made his MLW debut on Wednesday’s show, losing to Kane in an open prizefight challenge. The 29-year-old has appeared in AEW, GCW, Black Label Pro, CZW and other promotions.

Cody vs. Warhorse TNT title match announced for AEW Dynamite

A match that has been in the rumor mill for weeks is now a reality as Cody will defend the TNT Championship this Wednesday on AEW Dynamite against indie fan favorite Warhorse.

On the Road to Fight for the Fallen, Cody’s coach Arn Anderson suggested that Warhorse would be a good future opponent when the champion was asked about potential future opponents from the indies. AEW tweeted the clip, effectively setting the match into motion.

This will be the promotional debut for the 27-year-old who has been the IWTV Independent Wrestling Champion since September 2019. This will be just his second match since the pandemic put a long pause on the indie wrestling business in March.

Cody will be looking for his seventh successful defense of AEW’s new title and is coming off a win over the debuting Eddie Kingston in a no DQ match last week.

The show will also feature AEW World Tag Team Champions Kenny Omega and Hangman Page vs. Dark Order, World Champion Jon Moxley and Darby Allin vs. Brian Cage and Ricky Starks, The Inner Circle vs. Best Friends, Orange Cassidy, Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy in a ten-man tag, and Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida vs. Diamante in a non-title match.

VIDEO: Road to AEW Fight for the Fallen

An interesting name was brought up during a video hyping this Wednesday’s Fight for the Fallen. You can watch the video below:

The video started with Cody and his coach Arn Anderson talking about Sonny Kiss, who will challenge for the TNT title. Cody put over Kiss’ ability. When the question was brought up about other possible challengers on the independent scene, Arn Anderson mentioned the name Warhorse. The video cut to the next segment before Cody could answer.

The video also highlighted the other matches on the card. FTR and The Lucha Brothers talked about their match, which comes off of a match last week both teams were in. Brian Cage and Taz were also featured, hyping Cage’s bout against Jon Moxley for the AEW World title.

Another match announced for Fight for the Fallen is The Elite (Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks) vs. Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy, Luchasarus, and Marko Stunt).

This year’s Fight for the Fallen will be raising money for COVID-19 relief.
