Former WWE writers accuse Vince McMahon of creating hostile & sexist environment

Six former WWE writers have come forward to accuse Vince McMahon of creating a hostile and sexist work environment during their respective tenures there.

The Rolling Stone piece, released Saturday night, has one former writer on the record with the rest choosing to remain anonymous due to a “fear of retribution from the WWE, their former colleagues, and rabid wrestling fans.”

One of the writers that did go on the record — Michael Leonardi — claimed he was fired due to making a change to a 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Raw skit where Neville (currently PAC in AEW) was to reference King’s famous “I have a dream” speech. He allegedly didn’t want to say the line and it was given to R-Truth instead. While Leonardi’s boss Dave Kapoor was said to have approved the change, McMahon didn’t like it and lit into Leonardi who was eventually firing for being “not fit for the role.”

Through a representative, McMahon denied any wrongdoing for that incident or any of the accusations from the writers.

“Scores of writers could share tales of what an enjoyable, creative and freewheeling environment the WWE writers rooms were. This handful of (obviously disgruntled) individuals aren’t representative in any way of the consensus — or of the truth,” McMahon’s team told Rolling Stone.

McMahon’s team specifically denied Leonardi’s accounting of the above incident:

“The spokesperson acknowledged that McMahon had “an extremely hands-on approach” with WWE scripts, adding, “That’s why the idea of him suggesting or approving the use of a famous Martin Luther King, Jr. quote for a punchline to be used by a white British character is so ridiculous. It simply didn’t happen.”

A majority of the former writers that spoke to the outlet worked on both Raw and SmackDown from 2016 through 2022 with time spans between four months and five years. They detailed what they considered to be a hostile environment both on the road and in WWE’s corporate offices.

The story details other McMahon quirks that have trickled out through the years like his aversion to employees sneezing around him, standing up when he entered a room and sitting only when he sat, a formal dress code that included shoes that always were to be shined, and changing scripts repeatedly and at the last minute.

The writer adds that there was something about McMahon’s changing directives that felt almost sadistic: “I think Vince enjoyed the manipulation. He liked changing things. He liked keeping people on their toes. I genuinely felt like, this isn’t to benefit the show or the storyline, Vince really just enjoys making people squirm.”

McMahon specifically denied the request to stand up to Rolling Stone.

The accusations extended to other writers who were in power positions, creating an environment where writers were either for McMahon’s ways or against them — effectively turning them against each other. The accusations also included unwelcome comments and physical contact within the creative staff.

“They would touch me where they would have me come closer [to them],” she claims. “They would pull me by my waist to come somewhere or move closer to them. I’m just super aware that it’s kind of close to my butt and most people don’t touch me by the waist ever. I thought, ‘This is strange.'”

The story recounts the story of two former female writers who went to HR about the allegations with one being fired shortly afterward. After a Zoom call with female writers about the issues, the reaction was not positive.

After the Zoom meeting, the writers who spoke with Rolling Stone say, there was an in-person meeting with the entire writers room in which senior leadership allegedly told everyone they were “acting like middle schoolers” and not to go to HR if they have any future problems.

McMahon, who stepped down from his TKO and WWE leadership roles in 2022, is currently under federal investigation due to accusations in both the Janel Grant lawsuit against him and WWE, and for other hush money payouts he allegedly made in the past due to sexual misconduct.

None of the writers said they had direct knowledge or any of the information detailed in the Grant case.

Janel Grant/Vince McMahon update: Dr. Carlon Colker withdraws his complaint

Celebrity doctor Carlon Colker has withdraw his petition/complaint against Janel Grant in an adjacent development to the Grant vs. Vince McMahon lawsuit.

Following Grant’s petition in July seeking medical records related to Grant’s treatment at the clinic as it pertained to her ongoing sex trafficking lawsuit against WWE, McMahon, and John Laurinaitis, Colker and his Peak Wellness facility filed a complaint against Grant in August alleging her efforts were part of a “smear campaign.”

Grant’s team then filed a motion to strike the complaint and file a special motion for sanctions against both Colker and Peak Wellness including attorney costs awarded to Grant.

The complaint was withdrawn by Colker’s legal team on Wednesday while Grant’s petition against Colker and Peak Wellness remains in place.

Colker was identified as the “celebrity doctor” in the initial Grant lawsuit where she alleges McMahon directed her to Peak Wellness in Greenwich, CT, to receive IV infusions and supplements without knowing what she was talking. She said the medical records provided by Colker to this point are both inconsistent and incomplete.

In a statement to Post Wrestling, Grant attorney Ann Callis stated that “Unsurprisingly, Dr. Colker has withdrawn his baseless motion. In the same vein as Mr. McMahon’s recently struck down motion, this was filed simply as yet another frivolous attempt to intimidate Ms. Grant.”

Vince McMahon files motion to lift court-ordered pause in Janel Grant lawsuit

The legal team of Vince McMahon filed a motion on Thursday to lift a court-ordered stay of the Janel Grant lawsuit.

The suit filed against himself, WWE and John Laurinaitis was put on pause in mid-June by judge Jeffrey Meyer after both sides agreed to do so based on a request from the Department of Justice as a federal investigation into McMahon continues. That meant the earliest the suit could resume would be December 11, 2024.

In a statement to Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston Thursday, McMahon lawyer Jessica Taub Rosenberg stated the following:

“Today’s motion is in response to Ms. Grant’s flagrant violation of the federal Stay Order. After telling the Federal Court that she would pause her lawsuit, Ms. Grant immediately violated the Stay Order seeking one-sided discovery for her own benefit. Her lawyer told the media that the information sought in the new Connecticut state action is ‘to assist in our claims in the federal action.’ We are asking the federal Court to ensure that Plaintiff abides by the Court’s order and if she does not that civil contempt and financial sanctions may result.”

It’s assumed the state action is Grant’s attorneys submitting a pre-action discovery petition against both Peak Wellness and its owner/CEO Carlon Colker seeking medical records related to Grant’s treatment at the clinic as it concerns the sex trafficking lawsuit against WWE, McMahon and Laurinaitis.

May 20, 2024 Observer Newsletter: More Grant vs. McMahon developments, AEW Collision residency

Vince McMahon’s attorneys made more claims against Janel Grant in a filing where they argued against Ann Callis’ attempt to get McMahon’s lawsuit response stricken.

His attorneys claimed that Callis’ attempt to get the response stricken was meritless and the height of hypocrisy.

Callis on 4/24 in her attempt to get McMahon’s response stricken, wrote, “Instead of using his Motion in the appropriate manner—to raise legal arguments concerning whether this dispute must be submitted to arbitration—McMahon instead uses the Motion’s “Preliminary Statement” as a platform to launch vicious falsehoods attacking Janel’s moral character in a transparent attempt to harass and intimidate her into submission. McMahon’s easily refuted lies have no place in this case. It was not necessary, reasonable, or responsible to use a public filing to impugn Janel’s moral character. Indeed, McMahon’s desperate attempt to distract from the legal substance of the Motion highlight its weakness and the weakness of his overall case.”

The response also claimed that the original lawsuit showed, “Private sexual text messages from Defendant without including any of Plaintiff’s responses to those texts—responses which are equally and often more aggressive and provocative than Defendant’s communications and show not only that the relationship was consensual, but also that in many instances the Plaintiff was the initiator.”

It is also noteworthy that McMahon’s attorneys state that McMahon no longer had the email exchanges because he deleted them when the relationship ended.

But they claimed that Grant would still have them based on them being in the court filing and that in Discovery that will show that Grant also sent McMahon sexually explicit images and messages.

It should be noted that while McMahon’s side completely disputes her lawsuit and claimed it was baseless and almost all lies, they do acknowledge that the texts shown in the suit were legitimate.
