Velvet Sky reflects on Dixie Carter’s infamous TNA speech from 2009: ‘Vile’

Velvet Sky recalls Dixie Carter’s infamous speech from 2009 that left fans confused and talent irritated.

When footage of the speech surfaced online, Velvet Sky—who was just inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame last month—spoke out very negatively about Carter’s speech, and about Carter herself.

“I remember this day,” Sky wrote. “The consensus of the locker room and staff during this ‘meeting’ was not one single person gave a s*** what she was saying and we actually had to take time out of production day for this nonsense from her and it had to be filmed so she could have her ‘my way or the highway’ ego stroked even more. She was not well received by most because of the way she treated people who could do nothing for her and the way she would talk down to people. Vile.”

One of Sky’s followers said it was stupid to do this segment “as a work.” Sky’s response: “None of what she said was a work.”

In November of 2009, Total Nonstop Action had publicly announced the signing of former WWF and WCW world champion Hulk Hogan, but he had not yet appeared nor been directly mentioned on their television show. It was a turbulent time in TNA, with several wrestlers reportedly requesting their releases in the weeks leading up to the Hogan signing.

In that environment, Dixie Carter—who had rarely been seen on TNA television up to that point—opened Impact by laying down the law to her entire roster, who sat glumly in the stands as she spoke.

“Nobody likes drastic change. Nobody likes big moves. I understand that. And it affects different people different ways. And while I respect that those of you out there that might have differing opinions of the decisions that I’m making, I expect you to support me 100%. When you question things in this company, you’re questioning me. And I cannot allow that to happen,” she said at one point.

“Business is about choices,” she continued further. “I’ve made the choice to put my finances, my reputation, my passion, my love behind each and every one of you and this company. And it’s time for you to do the same thing. You have a choice to make. You can choose to support me, you can choose to support the direction TNA is going, or you can choose not to. But you’ll need to find another place to work.”

“This was hardly a rah-rah speech,” Bryan Alvarez wrote at the time. “Essentially, she told the world that a lot of people thought she was crazy for bringing in Hulk Hogan, a lot of people were second-guessing her, she didn’t like it, and if they weren’t happy they needed to find work elsewhere.”

Dixie Carter started running TNA when her parents, the owners of Panda Energy, purchased the company in 2002. She was in charge of TNA for 14 years before the promotion was sold to Anthem Entertainment in 2017. Her last on-camera appearance was in 2016, in a segement with EC3, Eric Young, and Matt Hardy.

Velvet Sky started with TNA in 2007 and was a regular part of the promotion through 2016, making sporadic appearances since then. She is a two-time Knockouts champion and a former Knockouts tag team champion.

Tommy Dreamer reveals who will induct The Beautiful People into TNA Hall of Fame

The Beautiful People’s inductor has been revealed.

In an interview with Gabby LaSpisa, Tommy Dreamer revealed that he would be the one inducting Angelina Love and Velvet Sky this weekend at Bound for Glory in Lowell, MA.

“They asked me. It was a big honor, so there you go,” Dreamer said.

It was also announced LaSpisa would be the host of the ceremony, which will be held prior to Bound for Glory. Earlier on Monday it was revealed that Tara, aka Victoria in WWE, would be inducting Mickie James.

The Beautiful People were a major part of the Knockouts division in TNA throughout the 2010s, mainly consisting of Love and Sky but also featured Madison Rayne and Lacey Von Erich at one point. Together, Love & Sky held the Knockouts Tag Team titles twice, while Love held the Knockouts title 4 times.

Here’s a look at every TNA Hall of Fame inductee since the honor was established in 2012:

TNA announces Knockouts duo for 2025 Hall of Fame class

Two more Knockouts division legends have been confirmed for the TNA Wrestling Hall of Fame class of 2025.

It was announced today that The Beautiful People (Velvet Sky & Angelina Love) will be inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame at Bound for Glory on Sunday, October 12. They join Mickie James as members of the 2025 class.

The announcement was made in a video where TNA President Carlos Silva surprised Sky & Love with news of their induction. Silva thanked Sky & Love for all they’ve contributed to the promotion.

“We’re excited that this will preserve and promote your legacy forever,” Silva said.

“Thank you so much,” an emotional Sky responded. “That means everything.”

Love & Sky were both multi-time Knockouts World Champions for TNA. They told Silva that the induction means the world to them, and they believe the Knockouts division holds a significant place in wrestling history as the place where the women’s revolution really started.

“Angelina Love and Velvet Sky were the original members of The Beautiful People, characters inspired by Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie,” TNA wrote. “The arrogant blondes had one goal: to cleanse the TNA roster ‘one ugly person at a time.'”

Bound for Glory 2025 is being held at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. Trick Williams vs. Mike Santana for the TNA World Championship will headline the PPV, which is also set to feature a Tag Team title bout between The Hardys and Dudleys. It’s the final time those two legendary teams will ever face each other.

Velvet Sky announces departure from the NWA

Velvet Sky is leaving her role with the National Wrestling Alliance.

On Friday, Sky announced that she will no longer be part of the NWA going forward. She wished the NWA the best and thanked everyone she worked with, including Billy Corgan and her broadcast partners Joe Galli and Tim Storm.

“Going forward, I will no longer be a part of the @NWA,” Sky wrote. “I wanna thank Billy for the opportunity, & thank you to each person I worked with as it was so much fun & I learned so much from Joe & Tim on commentary. I wish the NWA my best with everything. See you all down the road.”

Sky, who announced her retirement from in-ring competition in 2017, was a commentator for the NWA.

ROH still investigating Bully Ray fan incident

After initially saying they would investigate a backstage incident between a fan and Bully Ray within 48 hours, Ring of Honor said in a Thursday statement that they are still investigating.

The incident occurred at last Sunday’s State of the Art event in Portland, OR.

From ROH:

“Ring of Honor prides itself on providing a fun and entertaining environment for both our fans and wrestlers to experience professional wrestling at the highest level.

Fans are encouraged to cheer, boo, and chant during the show while wrestlers interact both positively and in rivalry, as that is the engagement that makes the ROH experience what it is. Wrestlers interacting with fans is core to the experience, however, under no circumstance should any of our athletes or staff confront or engage fans outside the bounds of this entertainment experience or outside the bounds of the area that hosts this experience. We hold all of our athletes and staff members to the highest standards and, because of the actions over the weekend, we fell short of meeting those standards.

We are still in the process of investigating this matter as well as reviewing and assessing internal security protocols to ensure a safe environment for all fans and athletes. All of our athletes and staff will also be trained and reminded of our policies and protocols for fan interaction and appropriate behavior in all situations.

To our amazing and wonderful fans, we apologize for the matter that transpired this past weekend as it does not reflect who we are as an organization or how we hope to engage with our fans. ROH fans are known worldwide for their passion, admiration, and appreciation for our athletes, and we share this same admiration and appreciation for our fans. We encourage all of our fans to continue attending our events and supporting our amazing athletes in a respectful manner as they have done in the past, and we promise to continue delivering what the fans deserve – the best wrestling and the best fan experience on the planet.”

Fan Josh Ketch attended the show and claimed security brought him backstage to be confronted and intimidated by Bully Ray (Mark LoMonaco) for heckling The Allure (Velvet Sky, Mandy Leon, and Angelina Love) over the course of several matches. Ketch claims he wasn’t being vulgar and was both struck and spat on by Leon in addition to being insulted by Sky (Jamie Lynn Szantyr).

LoMonaco released a statement on Twitter admitting to talking to Ketch backstage, but said he did not intimidate him and was merely sticking up for The Allure after Ketch crossed the line, citing other fans who can back up that Ketch was out of line during both nights of the Pacific Northwest tour.

Ketch tweeted that he has yet to be contacted by ROH.

Szantyr and Leon accused Ketch of verbal sexual harassment on Twitter. Szantyr called Ketch’s comments “lewd and disgusting” while Leon said he was “scratching for attention” and “extremely inappropriate” with his comments on both nights. Love tweeted it was sexual and verbal harassment, adding “Fans don’t act the way you did. I looked directly in your eyes. You had evil intent in them.”

Reaction from fans and media have been expectedly mixed with some saying that Ketch was out of line and has been an issue at other shows in the region while others noted that he did nothing wrong and that it was the talents who overstepped their bounds.

ROH launches investigation into reported Bully Ray fan incident

This story was updated at 8:45 PM Eastern.

First reported by POST Wrestling’s John Pollock, Ring of Honor is launching an internal investigation after a fan incident at Sunday’s ‘State of The Art’ in Portland, OR.

Josh Ketch, a fan who attended the show, tweeted several times Sunday night that after he heckled Velvet Sky and Mandy Leon early in the night, security took him backstage and left him with Bully Ray (real name Mark LoMonaco).

According to Ketch, LoMonaco intimidated him, told him he was done talking to the women, and needed to treat them with respect. He then told Ketch to “go be a fan” at which time security brought him back to his seat.

Ketch said that Leon both facepalmed and spat at him and that Sky (real name Jamie Lynn Szantyr) got into it with him as well, spraying perfume in his mouth at one point.

Ketch never admitted to using obscenity or foul language, but said that after Szantyr called him a virgin, he reminded her “she has sex with that fat turd Bully Ray” and said he called them “the tramp stamp trio.”

ROH GM Greg Gilleland issued the following statement to POST:

“ROH has always taken a fan-first approach with fan experience being at the forefront of all of our live events. We consider this to be very serious and we will be conducting an internal review over the next 48 hours to determine the appropriate actions.”

LoMonaco addressed the situation on Twitter late Monday afternoon, releasing a statement where he said he never intimidated “the fan” and said that he handled it “the exact opposite way most would assume, with decorum.” He said the conversation lasted 30 seconds and that he gave Ketch a “friendly pat on the back”, and told him to enjoy the show and be a fan.

LoMonaco also said that other fans who attended the Portland and Kent, WA, shows confirmed Ketch crossed the line with both male and female talents. He said that he’s guilty of defending three women who needed defending, not by being a bully but by being a man.

Szantyr quote tweeted a fan (“This.”) who said Ketch isn’t the victim and has been been a problem at other shows in the Pacific Northwest. She has been retweeting other fans coming to the wrestlers’ defense.

Leon has yet to tweet about the incident.
