Charlotte Flair returns to WWE, wins SmackDown Women’s title

Charlotte Flair not only returned to WWE on Friday’s SmackDown, but quickly defeated Ronda Rousey to regain the SmackDown Women’s title in an impromtu match.

After Rousey defeated Raquel Rodriguez on Friday’s show, Flair immediately came out. Rousey assumed that Flair wanted a shot at her title for the Royal Rumble. Flair instead said she wanted a match tonight. Despite Shanya Baszler telling Rousey not to take the match, Rousey did anyway. As Rousey was going for an armbar, Flair countered and pinned Rousey’s shoulders on the mat, giving her the win.

Following the match, Flair exited the ring and celebrated in the crowd with her newly won championship. Michael Cole noted that this was Flair’s 14th reign as champion.

Flair had been out of action since WrestleMania Backlash in May, losing to Rousey in an I Quit match. In storyline, Rousey had broken Flair’s arm with the armbar, forcing her to tap out. Flair took time off to marry AEW star Andrade el Idolo.

Stipulation set for SmackDown Women’s title match at WWE Extreme Rules

Ronda Rousey and Liv Morgan will meet under Extreme Rules.

It was announced on Friday’s SmackDown that Rousey and Morgan will meet under Extreme Rules when Morgan puts the SmackDown Women’s title on the line at the titular premium live event. The stipulation was added after the two had a sit-down conversation.

Rousey was being interviewed by Kayla Braxton about the upcoming match when Morgan walked in and asked Braxton if she could talk to Rousey. Morgan reminded Rousey that she was perhaps the only person in the world that has beaten her twice. That was where she challenged Rousey to an Extreme Rules match. Rousey accepted.

The feud between the two started at Money in the Bank, when Morgan cashed in and pinned Rousey in an impromptu match. The two then met at SummerSlam, where Morgan won after the referee counted Rousey’s shoulders on the mat despite Morgan submitting to an armbar.

Extreme Rules will take place on October 8 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Liv Morgan vs. Ronda Rousey set for WWE SummerSlam

A match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship has been added to SummerSlam.

Liv Morgan will defend the title against former champion Ronda Rousey. On tonight’s SmackDown, Morgan came out for a promo when she was confronted by Natalya, who said if it wasn’t for her injuring Rousey’s leg at Money in the Bank, Morgan wouldn’t be champion. This brought out Rousey, who eventually got in a confrontation with Natalya. The two had a match, with Rousey scoring a quick win.

At Money in the Bank, Rousey submitted Natalya to retain the SmackDown Women’s Championship. However, she was injured during the course of the match, leaving her vulnerable. Morgan, who won the women’s Money in the Bank match earlier in the show, came out with the briefcase and cashed in on Rousey, pinning her to win the title for the first time.

The updated card for WWE SummerSlam, which takes place July 30 in Nashville, Tennessee:

  • Last Man Standing match: Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against Brock Lesnar
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Liv Morgan defends against Ronda Rousey
  • Pat McAfee vs. Happy Corbin
  • United States Champion Bobby Lashley defends against Theory
  • Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) defend against The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford)

Ronda Rousey vs. Natalya set for WWE Money in the Bank

A SmackDown Women’s title match is now set for WWE Money in the Bank.

On tonight’s SmackDown, it was confirmed that Ronda Rousey will defend the championship against Natalya in Las Vegas on July 2. A number one contender’s match was held last week on SmackDown, where Natalya defeated Aliyah, Raquel Rodriguez, Shotzi, Xia Li, and Shayna Baszler in a six-pack match.

This week’s SmackDown had Rousey coming out to discuss the upcoming match, saying that her mom taught her the armbar while Natalya stole the sharpshooter from her uncle, Bret Hart. Shotzi came out and after an argument, the two had a match, with Rousey winning. However, Natalya attacked Rousey after the match, putting her in a sharpshooter, with Rousey refusing to tap out.

Here is the lineup so far for Money in the Bank, which takes place at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas:

  • Bianca Belair vs. Rhea Ripley for the Raw Women’s Championship
  • Ronda Rousey vs. Natalya for the SmackDown Women’s Championship
  • Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match, with Lacey Evans qualifying
  • Men’s Money in the Bank ladder match

Bayley debuts new persona, regains WWE SmackDown Women’s title

Bayley has fully turned heel and is again the SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Bayley regained the title by defeating Charlotte Flair in the main event of tonight’s SmackDown. Charlotte’s most recent reign lasted under a week. She had won the championship from Bayley at Hell in a Cell this past Sunday.

Before tonight’s match, Bayley debuted a new persona. She has a shorter haircut and destroyed the inflatable tube men that have long been part of her entrance.

New music for Bayley played after she defeated Charlotte for the title. She also cut a brief post-match promo, telling the crowd “Hey bitches, screw all of you.”

Bayley’s heel turn began when she helped Sasha Banks lay out Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch with a steel chair last month.

The WWE Draft kicked off on tonight’s SmackDown and will conclude on Monday’s Raw. Bayley and Charlotte are in the pool of wrestlers eligible to be drafted on Monday. Lynch was drafted to Raw tonight, while Banks was drafted to SmackDown.

SmackDown Women’s title match set for WWE SummerSlam

Becky Lynch’s win over Carmella tonight makes the SmackDown women’s title match for SummerSlam official.

Lynch defeated Carmella in a non-title match tonight on SmackDown, submitting her with the disarmher. Based on stipulations made last week, if Lynch won, she would earn a SmackDown women’s title match against Carmella at SummerSlam. Lynch had been racking up wins in recent weeks leading to tonight’s match, challenging Carmella after defeating Mandy Rose last week.

It wasn’t a good night for Carmella in a lot of ways, as the person who has been helping her retain the title in recent months seemingly won’t be at her side any longer. After interrupting a WWE championship contract signing and trying to insert himself in the match, SmackDown General Manager Paige fired Ellsworth, escorting and literally kicking him out of the building.

SummerSlam will take place on August 19 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Shark cage stipulation set for Carmella-Asuka at Extreme Rules

A new stipulation has been added to the SmackDown women’s championship match at Extreme Rules.

GM Paige made the announcement during SmackDown tonight that James Ellsworth will be suspended above the ring during the match between Carmella and Asuka. Ellsworth was the one responsible for Asuka’s loss last month at Money in the Bank when he made his return to the promotion, helping Carmella score the win while distracting Asuka.

After the first Battle of the Sexes bout proved to be inconclusive, James Ellsworth and Asuka had their second encounter on tonight’s episode of SmackDown. Like the previous week, Ellsworth continually tried to escape out of the ring. But this time, since it was a lumberjack match, he was kept in the ring thanks to the likes of Becky Lynch and Naomi. Asuka eventually latched on with the Asuka lock for the submission.

Despite winning the match, it was Asuka and James Ellsworth who were left standing, as Ellsworth sprayed Asuka in the eyes with an unknown substance. Carmella followed up with a superkick which laid Asuka out.

Extreme Rules is this Sunday on the WWE Network. It will take place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
