WWE SmackDown season premiere live results: Roman Reigns returns

After two months away from WWE television, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns returns on SmackDown’s season premiere from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The last time Reigns wrestled was at SummerSlam, when he defeated Jey Uso under Tribal Combat rules. Since then, his Bloodline stablemates have found themselves in feuds with LA Knight, AJ Styles, and John Cena.

Speaking of Cena, he is scheduled to appear on SmackDown tonight as well. Cena teamed up with Knight at Fastlane to get a victory over The Bloodline’s Jimmy Uso & Solo Sikoa.

Another appearance set for the show will come from Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

Pretty Deadly will return to in-ring action against The Brawling Brutes (Butch & Ridge Holland). It’s the first time Pretty Deadly have competed since Elton Prince suffered an injury in July.

Plus, Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso defend their Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles against Austin Theory & Grayson Waller. Theory & Waller accepted an open challenge that Rhodes & Jey issued.

Our live coverage starts at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

– Kevin Patrick welcomed everyone into the show. John Cena’s music hit and out he came to kick things off.

The John Cena/Roman Reigns segment

A star-studded opening segment that reintroduced Reigns effectively. Is it me or does something seem off in the Cena/Knight alignment? It feels like Cena is trying his hardest to give Knight all he can, but there’s a tiny disconnect there. I just can’t put my finger on it. Anyway, I wonder if this means we’ll get Knight vs. Reigns at Crownd Jewel. I actually wouldn’t be opposed to seeing Cena get one more title shot, but, hey, he’s right: In storyline, at least, what has Cena done to deserve it?

Cena reminded everyone that tonight is a big night and welcomed everyone to “the season premiere of SmackDown.” On cue, Roman Reigns’s music hit and his 58-minute entrance began. Reigns was flanked by Solo Sikoa and Paul Heyman, the latter of whom’s hair was no longer entirely gray. Reigns stood in the ring for a while before he said, “John boy, Hollywood, if you’re going to open my show, you better do it the right way.” From there, Reigns told Tulsa to acknolwedge him.

Reigns said Cena was a coward and Cena showed up only because Reigns took his leave. Reigns said Cena isn’t the GOAT, and, in fact, the GOAT is Roman Reigns. Reigns told Cena to leave and if he doesn’t, Reigns will make Cena leave. Cena chimed in by saying there was a bunch of energy in the building. Cena said he was going to throw Reigns a curveball. Cena said he wasn’t there to challenge Reigns and instead, he was there to acknowledge Reigns. Cena cited the 1,000-plus days Reigns has held his title and said it was the greatest accomplishment ever. Cena said he wasn’t going to challenge Reigns because Cena hasn’t earned it. Meanwhile, Cena said that he knows someone who has earned a title shot. Cue LA Knight’s music.

Knight played to the crowd once in the ring. Cena said it’s LA Knight’s time and handed Knight the microphone while the crowd chanted Knight’s name. Knight did the “Let me talk to ya!” line. Knight asked Reigns if he was pissing his pants yet. Knight said Reigns is nothing more than a man standing in Knight’s way. Knight introduced himself to Reigns via the crowd, who chanted “L-A-Knight-Yeah!” The crowd kept up the “LA Knight” chants. Reigns mocked Knight for the crowd knowing Knight’s name now. Reigns asked Knight “who the hell do you think you are standing in my ring right now?”

Knight took off his sunglasses. Knight said talking like that is a good way to get himself referred to in the past tense. As Knight ranted, Jimmy Uso attacked Knight from behind. Reigns looked a little perplexed. Knight quickly rebounded and dispatched of Jimmy. Knight and Reigns engaged in a stare down until Reigns rolled out of the ring. Reigns told Sikoa to handle Knight. Sikoa hopped onto the apron and said it’s going to be Knight vs. Sikoa tonight. Knight accepted the challenge.

A disembodied voice explained that Elton Prince has been injured and Prince was shown in a wheelchair in the entryway to the ring. Prince miraculously stood out of the wheelchair to mark his comeback. Pretty Deadly made their way to the ring.

Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince & Kit Wilson) defeated the Brawling Brutes (Ridge Holland & Butch) [9:04]

Oh. So, Pretty Deadly are going to do this injury thing for a while now, aren’t they? This first time out was dragged on a bit too long for my taste, but that’s a team that can make something like that fun, moving forward. They can also run it into the ground pretty hard, pretty quickly, so only time will tell how that plays out. The match itself was fine for what it was, but I’ve got to say: At what point do the Brawling Brutes start to get some booking love? They lose far too much to be taken seriously. At this point, they garner more sympathy than fear.

Prince and Butch began the match. Butch worked on Prince’s arm and tagged in Holland. Wilson tagged in as well and worked over Wilson until Butch tagged in. Butch landed a German Suplex and a kick to Wilson’s head. Wilson rolled to the outside and Butch hit a splash and Butch and Holland landed 10 Beats on both Wilson and Prince before the show went to commercial break. When the show returned, Wilson was beating down Butch. Prince tagged in and kept the beatdown going. Prince set up for 10 Beats on Butch, but Butch cut him off and did the finger spot on Prince.

Wilson tagged in and Pretty Deadly got back control. Ultimately, Butch fought his way out and got the hot tag to Holland, who cleaned house. Prince went to the second rope, but Holland cut him off and slammed Prince for a two-count. Things broke down with Butch hitting a Shining Wizard and Wilson. Butch and Wilson fought on the outside as Holland slammed Prince, who then sold a knee injury. There was a lot of nothing happening as Prince insisted he was hurt and in the meantime Wilson kicked Holland in the head. Prince then rolled up Holland for the win.

– Kayla Braxton interviewed Carlito backstage. Carlito said that him being back in WWE is “cool.” Bobby Lashley stepped into the frame and told Carlito that his comeback was amazing and masterful. Lashley stuck out his hand and said he wanted to welcome Carlito back. Carlito didn’t shake it and said he wants his first match back on SmackDown to be against Lashley. From there, the Street Profits attacked Carlito from behind with a chair. Lashley raised the chair, but things were broken up by Adam Pearce and other WWE officials. The LWO was shown tending to Carlito, but Bayley interrupted things. Zelina Vega stepped to Bayley They bickered until Pearce ordered a match between the two right away.

– Roman Reigns and the Bloodline were shown backstage. Jimmy Uso told Reigns about how he can call an audible when needed. Reigns asked Jimmy if Jimmy was the quarterback, what would Jimmy do. Jimmy said he’d get Jey and Reigns noted how much it bothers him that Jey has the tag titles with Cody Rhodes. Reigns asked Jimmy if Jimmy will handle that and Jimmy siad “Yeet.” Reigns said he doesn’t like “Yeet.” They fist-bumped.

Bayley defeated Zelina Vega [2:39]

When I saw this match started at 8:50 p.m. EST, I thought, “Well, this can go two ways. One, they put a lot of thought into this and these women are going to be given the opportunity to put on a hell of a match. Or two, they’re out in under three minutes because they have something planned for top of the hour.” Sadly, the latter prediction turned out to be the correct one, but these two worked well together, especially considering the constraints. Vega was given a lot of offense, which was a welcome surprise, and Damage CTRL reiterated how they are a faction that oftentimes feels impossible to beat. It could be worse.

Bayley mocked how short Vega is to start the match. Vega ran Bayley into a corner and hit an arm-drag. Vega went for a head-scissors, but Bayley cut her off with a clothesline. Bayley went for a Bayley-To-Belly, but Vega countered and eventually set up a 619. Vega hit the first part, but was then distracted by Dakota Kai. Vega followed that up with a Meteora for a two-count. IYO SKY distracted the ref and Vega tended to that. As a result, Bayley took advantage, hit the Rose Plant and got the win. After the match, SKY and Bayley attacked Vega until Charlotte ran to the ring to clear the ring of Damage CTRL.

The Triple H segment

I’m torn on the deluge of wrestling news in the Wrestling News Era. The word that Nick Aldis was going to be the new SmackDown GM leaked earlier today and I just think it would have packed a bigger punch if that wasn’t out in the public beforehand. Either way, I feel bad for him not getting much of a response when Hunter actually got around to introducing him. The Dirty Dom involvement made things fun, but Aldis could have used more a spotlight (as an aside: dude looked like a block in that weird clue checked suit. Felt very unnatural, very uncomfortable. But I digress). I’m interested to see how well Aldis does in this role. Pearce kind of backed into his role as Designated WWE Official over time, but Aldis got the announcement treatment, so some fans may be expecting more from him. Owens to SmackDown, meanwhile, was a convenient way to get him split from Sami Zayn without having to pull another turn, so I can’t complain about that. Owens has to be one of the next in line for Reigns, right?

Adam Pearce stood in the ring as Triple H made his entrance. The crowd was excited. Hunter said it was electric in there. Hunter said WWE is on their way to Crown Jewel and just around the corner will be Survivor Series. Hunter said it all starts tonight at the season premiere of SmackDown (somebody trademark that). Hunter called Pearce one of the unsung heroes of WWE. Hunter said over the last three years, Pearce has done an incredible job as a WWE official. Hunter said Pearce has overseen both Raw and SmackDown and he has done an incredible job. Hunter thanked Pearce. Hunter said it’s a job no one person should do alone.

Hunter said Pearce is getting a promotion – the new GM of Monday Night Raw. Hunter asked who the general manager of SmackDown will be. Dominik Mysterio’s music played and Dirty Dom walked to the ring with a microphone. Dom got booed out of the building. Dom talked about how the Judgment Day got screwed out of their tag team titles. Hunter said he couldn’t hear Dom talk because of the boos. This, of course, only inspired the crowd to boo more. Dominik asked how they could do a tag team title match tonight when Judgment Day is supposed to have one on Monday.

Hunter made a joke about how loud the boos were and he always thought “they just pumped them in,” which was kind of funny. Hunter said he was bringing the new GM of SmackDown out to talk to Dominik, and that new GM was going to be Nick Aldis. The crowd seemed … confused? Aldis got some respectable applause after he introduced himself. Aldis shook Dom’s hand and said he was a big fan … of Dom’s dad, which woke the crowd up. Aldis said his first official act as GM was completing the trade Cody made some weeks ago. Aldis tried to introduce the new SmackDown roster member, but Dom cut him off. The crowd went nuts booing Dirty Dom. Kevin Owens’s music hit, and, well, look who’s back on SmackDown.

Owens walked through the entrance way. Owens entered the ring and gave Dominik a Stunner. Aldos and Owens shook hands and Aldis raised Owens’s arm. The show cut backstage, where roman Reigns was shaking his head at the addition of Owens to the SmackDown roster. Reigns said Jey, Cody and Kevin are running around on his show. Reigns asked “What are we doing?!” Reigns was mad at Jimmy Uso for drinking water on Reigns’s couch. Jimmy asked Reigns if he was serious. Roman said he wasn’t … “but imagine if he was.” Jimmy left and took Sikoa with him.

**********

– A Dragon Lee vignette aired. Good for him on that. And actually, good on WWE for doing it, too.

– Aldis was backstage talking to Chelsea Green and Piper Niven. Green pitched new women’s tag belts featuring Italian leather. Charlotte walked into the frame and Aldis turned his attention to Charlotte. Aldis referenced what happened at Fastlane and said next week, Charlotte will face IYO SKY for the WWE Women’s Championship. Charlotte turned around and Jade Cargill was standing right there. Hunter was standing with Cargill. Cargill and Charlotte exchanged a few words and we went back to the ring, where Jey Uso and Cody Rhodes were making their entrances.

Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso defeated Grayson Waller & Austin Theory [9:21]

Man, it looks like Cody and Jey are having a blast out there together. I don’t really get it, and that Fastlane press conference was wild, but I dig it. Their enthusiasm is infectious. Anyway, Waller and Theory make a good team, but I started to wonder during this match: Are they teaming as a means to turn Theory babyface soon? That’s not too silly of an idea, is it? The match hit all the right notes and it was everything you’d expect from a Cody/Jey title defense. They’re a nice, feel-good team, but this can’t be long-term … right? I put the over/under on their tag title reign at three months, by the way. And yes. I’m taking the under.

Cody and Waller started the match. Cody had the upper hand early until Waller kicked Cody and tagged in Theory. Cody took Theory down and Theory tagged Waller back into the match. Cody tagged in Uso, who kicked Waller. Theory landed a blind tag to get himself in the match and eventually ran into a series of punches from Uso. With Uso on the apron, Theory ran Uso into a ring post and the show went to a commercial break.

Back from the commercial break, Theory was worked a chin-lock on Uso inside the ring. Theory stomped on Uso repeatedly. Waller tagged in as Uso fired up. Theory cut him off, however, and Waller came off the second rope with an elbow for a two-count. Uso hit an enziguri to slow things down and Uso got the hot tag to Cody, who ran in and pummeled Theory. Cody landed a powerslam and a Disaster Kick. Waller entered the ring and Cody hit another Disaster Kick. Theory hit a suplex, but Uso broke up a pin attempt. Uso hit some super-kicks on everyone and the Co-D 1D. Cody landed the CrossRhodes on Theory and got the pin.

After the match, Jey and Cody were walking to the back and Jimmy and Sikoa walked through the (not) curtain. Roman Reigns followed them and Reigns engaged in a stare down with Cody. Aldis walked out and told Cody and Roman “not tonight.” The show went to a commercial break.

**********

– The commentary team ran down the fact that next week, we get IYO SKY vs. Charlotte Flair for the WWE Women’s Championship. Also on tap will be Santos Escobar vs. Montez Ford.

LA Knight defeated Solo Sikoa [12:34]

There’s something about LA Knight matches that I just don’t like. That’s not even coming from the place that says, “Give me Will Ospreay matches into my veins all day, every day.” Because I can enjoy the WWE style and I certainly appreciate what that company continues to accomplish. But something about Knight’s matches feel lesser than, and much like something else I pointed out earlier, I can’t put my finger on it. That said, this was one of the better LA Knight matches in some time on WWE TV. He’s clearly got the best cards in the deck and the crowds love him. For that, my hat is tipped. But it’s rare we see an LA Knight match and think … “That was pretty good.” But this? Well this was … pretty good. The show-closing angle puts the heat on an inevitable Knight vs. Reigns match. It’s a matter of when, not if. And that match, above all else, will be one of the most fascinating to watch in the year of our lord 2023. in the meantime, Sikoa did a very good job here while Knight more than held up his end. You knew Reigns would play into the final seconds of the show. He did. And now off, we go.

The two locked up to start things out. Sikoa had control early with a back elbow. Sikoa lifted Knight for a suplex, but Knight landed on his feet and hit a neck-breaker for a one-count. Sikoa took Knight down in what appeared to be a tiny bit of miscommunication. Knight tried to lift Sikoa, but Sikoa was too heavy and from there, Sikoa hit a chop. Knight came right back and took Sikoa’s legs out. Knight then clotheslined Sikoa over the top and the action spilled outside. With Knight on the apron, Knight went for a suplex, but Sikoa cut him off and ran Knight into a ring post. The show then went to its final commercial break.

When the show returned, Sikoa worked Knight’s neck. Knight again went for a body-slam, but Sikoa just fell on Knight for a two-count. Sikoa landed a belly-to-belly for a two-count. Sikoa then hit what is known as a hip attack in other situations. Sikoa went back to his vice grip on Knight’s neck. Knight tried to fire up, but Sikoa threw Knight into a corner. Knight countered with a bulldog from the second rope for a two count. Knight ran at Sikoa, but Sikoa hit a Samoan Drop for a two-count. Sikoa went to sit on Knight, but Knight moved to even things out. Sikoa ran at Knight, but Knight moved and Sikoa hit a turnbuckle. It happened twice.

The two traded punches until Knight got the best of the exchange. Knight landed a clothesline and a DDT. Knight stomped a mud hole in Sikoa. Knight then hit a running knee. Sikoa lifted Knight, but Knight got out of it and finally, at last, landed a body-slam on Sikoa. Knight hit his famous elbow. The two ran the ropes and took each other out with a double clothesline. Wouldn’t you know it, Jimmy Uso appeared and got into the ring, but John Cena ran out and cut Jimmy off. In light of the chaos, Knight hit the BFT for the win.

After the match, Knight was celebrating, but out of nowhere Roman Reigns ran in and speared Knight. Reigns smiled at the crowd. Reigns stood tall as the show went off the air.

Roman Reigns return, Triple H announced for WWE SmackDown season premiere

SmackDown topped all network television with a 0.54 rating in the 18-49 demo, which was the same number as SmackDown drew last week. It was third on television, trailing an MLB wildcard game on ESPN and the SportsCenter that followed it.

SmackDown also led English-language network TV with a 0.34 rating in the 18-34 demo but trailed a show on Univision in that category. It trailed the MLB game and SportsCenter in 18-34 as well.

As compared with the same week in 2021, SmackDown was up 4.5 percent in viewers and up 3.9 percent in 18-49. It’s just the second week since July 1 that the show has had a year-over-year increase in both categories.

Listed below are the last 11 weeks of overall viewership and 18-49 demo ratings for SmackDown, along with the 10-week averages in both categories. This week’s show was up 3.4 percent in viewers and up 5.9 percent in 18-49 as compared to the recent averages.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Season premiere episode

Last night’s SmackDown was both the season premiere edition of the show and the final stop before Extreme Rules.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque kicked off the episode and welcomed everyone to SmackDown. “There will come a time when you believe that everything is finished, but that is the beginning,” Levesque said. “Welcome to Fox, and welcome to the season premiere of Friday Night SmackDown.”

In the main event of the show, Gunther and Sheamus faced off in a rematch from their classic at Clash at the Castle. Gunther took advantage of a distraction and retained the Intercontinental title after hitting Sheamus with a Shillelagh. There was also a moment during the match where it appeared that Gunther tapped out, but the referee waved it off and said Gunther didn’t give up.

Plus, Roman Reigns and Logan Paul went face-to-face, Legado del Fantasma debuted with the returning Zelina Vega now part of their ranks, and more.

Triple H Segment

Triple H was standing in the ring and welcomed the fans to SmackDown on FOX. He noted that there will come a time when you think everything’s finished, but that’s the beginning. Most importantly, there was an obvious QR code on Triple H’s mic.

Michael Cole introduced his new partner Wade Barrett. Barrett and Cole were good for their first time together on SmackDown.

*******

Bloodline Segment

Everything about this segment was great. Paul Heyman cut an awesome promo on Logan Paul, followed by a great Zayn promo. Logan Paul was good in his role, trying to cause problems in the Bloodline.

Jey and Reigns were good in their brief stare-down as well. The fans added to the atmosphere and were on fire the entire segment. The only downside is that the fans booed Paul and treated him like the heel.

A video package recapped the Roman Reigns-Logan Paul press conference.

Universal Champions Roman Reigns, Paul Heyman, The Usos, Solo Sikoa, and Sami Zayn made their way to the ring to a huge pop. The fans broke into a faint “Sami” chant as The Bloodline posed. Reigns demanded the fans acknowledge him to a giant reaction.

Logan Paul’s music interrupted to a lackluster response. He made his way to the ring but stood on the apron. The fans erupted in boos, and a booming “Logan sucks” chant. Zayn laughed in the background. Reigns pointed out that the fans used to boo him, but now, he’s the greatest.

Heyman called Paul this generation’s Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper. He said it hit him like Anderson Silvia would hit his brother Jake Paul. Heyman then compared Paul to the Kardashians. Heyman brought up other Internet personalities, Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, and Andrew Tate. None of them would have the guts to step up to Reigns. He promised that the tribal chief would smash Paul in Saudi Arabia.

Paul finally spoke up to loud boos. He asked Heyman if Reigns was the tribal chief or Jey Uso. Uso got in Paul’s face yelling that he knew Paul was trying to cause problems. The fans cheered for Jey with chants of “Let him go” and “Uso.” Reigns didn’t like that comment and got in Jey’s face. Zayn grabbed the mic, and the fans erupted in cheers.

Zayn defended Jey and kept the peace. He blamed Logan Paul. Zayn added that Reigns would smash Paul at Crown Jewel, and the fans popped. He said Paul’s just a Youtube personality that wants to be a wrestler. Zayn said Paul’s just a number 2 and a stain. He ended by saying they’re the ones, and he’s the two. Paul walked off, and the Bloodline laughed at him.

*******

Sola Sikoa defeated Ricochet (8:16)

Ricochet and Sikoa had a good fast-paced match with lots of high-flying action and a cool finish. Even in losing, Ricochet looked strong.

Sikoa jumped Ricochet before the match. He had the early advantage, but Ricochet quickly recovered and hit a dive to the floor. A frustrated Sikoa grabbed a chair, but the referee took it away. Sikoa briefly took over, but Ricochet fought back. He went for a springboard, but Sikoa cut him off with a right hand. Ricochet landed hard on his neck.

Back from the break, Sikoa was firmly in control until Ricochet fought back. He caught Sikoa with a hurricanrana and a jumping knee. He followed up with a springboard drop kick and superkick. In a cool finish, Ricochet went for the 450 splash. Sikoa jumped to his feet, caught Ricochet mid-move, and hit the spinning solo for the win.

The Bloodline was watching the match in their locker room. Zayn bragged about mentoring Sikoa. Jey Uso lost his cool and started yelling at Zayn.

Zayn called him a hothead, and Jey freaked out. Reigns agreed that Jey is a hothead and has always been one. He’s always been The Bloodline’s problem, but now he’s Zayn’s problem. Zayn shook his head reluctantly as everyone looked around awkwardly.

********

In the back, Hit Row was on their way to the ring.

Back from the break, Sami Zayn and The Usos were walking down the hallway. Zayn tried apologizing for the previous segment. New Day approached and made fun of Jey Uso for Sami being his boss. Zayn challenged them to find a partner for a six-man tag match later.

********

Legado Del Fantasma with Zelina Vega Debuted

Legado Del Fantasma had a really strong debut. Most fans knew who they were before they took their masks off. They got a good reaction and came across as stars. Zelina Vega returned with a new look and got a strong reaction too. Plus, she’s a good fit for Legado Del Fantasma.

Hit Row came to the ring and posed when three masked luchadors in suits jumped Hit Row. They tossed Ashante “Thee” Adonis out of the ring and focused their attack on Top Dolla. B. Fab tried to check on Top Dolla when a Zelina Vega with blonde hair showed up. She attacked B. Fab and took her out with a running knee.

They posed in the ring and took off their masks to reveal Legado Del Fantasma (Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde, and Cruz Del Toro). The fans popped for the reveal.

*******

They aired a video of a white rabbit running to an “X.” It dug a hole, and fire shot out. Then the words tomorrow night and feed your hero flashed on the screen. It strongly hinted at Bray Wyatt’s return at Extreme Rules.

*******

Raquel Rodriguez & Shotzi defeated Sonya Deville & Xia Li (2:16)

This was one of those short matches that didn’t have time to develop. Rodriguez looked good again as she dominated the heels.

Shozi and Raquel Rodriguez made their entrance on Shotzi’s tank.

The heels isolated Shotzi to gain control. Shotzi fought back, and Rodriguez got the hot tag. She ran wild on the heels hitting the Vader Bomb elbow on Deville. Shotzi took out Xia Li, and Rodriguez hit the Texana Bomb on Deville for the win.

*********

Cole and Barrett briefly discussed Gunther vs. Sheamus. They showed comments from former Intercontinental Champions on Twitter. In the back, The Brawling Brutes prepared for Sheamus’ match tonight.

A video package recapped Liv Morgan vs. Ronda Rousey.

*******

Karrion Kross-Drew McIntyre Segment

Karrion Kross and Scarlett made their way to the ring. As Kross posed, Drew McIntyre appeared behind him. He attacked Kross as he turned around. He beat down Kross and put the leather strap around his wrist.

Security ran out to stop McIntyre, but he fought them off like Superman. Kross recovered and viciously beat down McIntyre. He tied McIntyre to the ropes and brutally whipped him with the strap several times.

********

Next, a mysterious vignette aired. It seemed to imply The Viking Raiders or possibly Sarah Logan, but that wasn’t clear. A person in Viking clothing with horns stood with their back to the camera in front of Viking shields. It featured the line “Valhalla awaits.”

*******

Braun Strowman & New Day defeated Sami Zayn & The Usos (10:30)

They pushed two main stories throughout the match. First, Zayn and Jey Uso’s arguing led to the Bloodline losing. Secondly, Cole pushed that New Day wants to prevent The Usos from breaking their title record.

The Usos were mad at Sami Zayn when Strowman came out as the mystery partner.

Kingston and Zayn went back and forth, but the faces quickly took over. Jey was furious at Zayn and kept yelling at him. New Day took advantage and dumped The Usos to the floor. They followed up with a double suicide dive. Zayn tried to help The Usos, but Jey yelled at him again.

During the break, Zayn caused a distraction so Jey could interfere. The heels took over and isolated Kington on their side of the ring. The fans broke into a loud “We want Braun” chant. Zayn was firmly in control when Jey tagged himself. He slapped Zayn hard on the back for the tag, which offended Zayn.

Jimmy tagged Zayn back in the ring to a faint “Sami” chant. Zayn and Jey briefly worked together, but they started arguing again. Kingston took advantage, and Strowman got the hot tag. He cleared the ring and splashed Jimmy in the corner. Strowman followed with a choke slam.

Jey and Zayn started arguing at ringside. Strowman noticed, ran around ringside, and shoulder-tackled them into the announce desk. Jey flew into Cole and knocked him down. Woods and Kingston then hit the backbreaker/double foot stomp on Jimmy for the win.

********

In the back, Max Dupri attacked the Maximum Male Models with a chair. Maxine tried to stop him and called him Max. He cut her off and said that’s not his name. He’s LA Knight. The fans popped.

*******

Intercontinental Champion Gunther defeated Sheamus (18:18) to retain the title

Gunther and Sheamus had an awesome hard-hitting match. They worked hard and just beat the hell out of each other again. Gunther had a bloody nose, and Sheamus’s chest was beet red within the first five minutes. Their last match was slightly better because they got a bit more time and the atmosphere in Cardiff. Still, this was a great SmackDown main event with a hot crowd.

There was a controversial moment when Sheamus had Gunther in the cloverleaf. Gunther appeared to tap, but the referee thought he was just reaching for the ropes. That probably sets up a rematch.

The bell rang, and they wasted no time. They started trading hard chops and clotheslines. Sheamus threw Gunther out of the ring and tossed him around. He threw Gunther into the barricade repeatedly as they went to a commercial. They only went about a minute before the commercial, but it was a fast and furious minute.

Back from the break, Gunther was in control until Sheamus hit a slam. Sheamus went for the ten beats of the bodhran, but Gunther blocked the first shot. They fought on the apron. Gunther took over and drove Sheamus’ hand into the exposed part of the turnbuckle.

Gunther and Sheamus traded shots in the ring again. Gunther locked on a sleeper. Sheamus got to his feet, so Gunther let it go. Sheamus and Gunther traded stiff shots in the middle of the ring again.

Back from the commercial, Gunther destroyed Sheamus with vicious chops. Sheamus challenged Gunther to hit him again to a big pop. Sheamus backed Gunther into the corner and beat him down.

Sheamus then hit the ten beats of bodhran on the top, middle, and bottom rope to a huge pop. Sheamus picked up Gunther for white noise, climbed up to the second turnbuckle, and hit white noise for a near fall. The fans broke into a loud “This is awesome” chant.

Sheamus went for the cloverleaf, but Gunther broke free. Gunther got back to his feet and powerbombed Sheamus for a close near fall. Gunther continued to attack and hit a diving splash for another close near fall. The fans broke into a loud “Sheamus” chant.

Gunther went for a clothesline, but Sheamus kicked the arm instead. Sheamus locked on the cloverleaf. Gunther appeared to tap out as he tried to reach for the ropes. The referee waived it off because Gunther was trying to grab the ropes to break the submission.

Sheamus and the fans were furious at the referee. They were certain Gunther tapped out, but she disagreed.

Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci ran down to encourage Gunther. Butch and Ridge Holland ran out for the save and attacked Imperium with a shillelagh.

As they brawled around ringside, Kaiser got ahold of the shillelagh and passed it to Gunther. Sheamus went for the brogue kick, but Gunther knocked him out with the shillelagh for the win.

Butch and Holland continued to brawl with Imperium around ringside. In the ring, Gunther posed with the title over a fallen Sheamus to end SmackDown.

Gunther vs. Sheamus rematch set for WWE SmackDown season premiere

Gunther and Sheamus are set to run back their classic from Clash at the Castle.

WWE announced today that Gunther will defend his Intercontinental title against Sheamus on the Friday, October 7 episode of SmackDown. The episode is SmackDown’s season premiere.

When they faced off at Clash at the Castle earlier this month, Gunther retained the Intercontinental title against Sheamus. The match was rated five stars by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Gunther pinned Sheamus in their first match after hitting a powerbomb and a lariat. Sheamus went for a Brogue Kick near the finish, but his back gave out after all of the punishment he had taken in the hard-hitting match.

It was revealed at Clash at the Castle that Giovanni Vinci had been called up to the WWE main roster. Vinci reunited with his Imperium stablemates Gunther and Ludwig Kaiser.

Gunther has been Intercontinental Champion since defeating Shinsuke Nakamura for the title on SmackDown this June.

Sheamus’ Brawling Brutes stablemates Ridge Holland & Butch will challenge The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles on the SmackDown episode that’s taking place tonight.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: The New Day’s farewell match

With The New Day being split up in the WWE Draft, they had their farewell match on last night’s season premiere episode of SmackDown.

Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods & Big E defeated Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro & Sheamus in a six-man tag match on last night’s show. Kingston & Woods were moved over to Raw in the draft, while Big E is staying on SmackDown.

The New Day also shared an emotional moment before the match as they discussed the journey they’ve been on together over the past six years.

Roman Reigns retained his Universal Championship against Braun Strowman in last night’s main event. Like he did against Jey Uso at Clash of Champions, Reigns low blowed Strowman when kicking out of a pinfall attempt. Strowman kicked out after Reigns hit a spear but ultimately passed out when put in a guillotine by Reigns.

Reigns is defending his Universal Championship against Uso in a Hell in a Cell I Quit match at Hell in a Cell on Sunday, October 25. Uso came out to the stage after last night’s main event. With Uso watching on, Reigns laid out Strowman with a post-match spear. Reigns then told Uso to come down to the ring. Reigns hit Strowman repeatedly with a steel chair and warned Uso that — if this is what he can do to Strowman — imagine what he’ll do to Uso.

Reigns dared Uso to use the steel chair and prove something to Reigns and their family. Reigns turned his back to Uso, but Uso initially refused to hit him. When Reigns turned around, Uso punched him, hit a superkick, and then hit him with the chair twice. As officials were holding Uso back, Reigns dropped him with a Superman punch.

The build to Hell in a Cell also continued with SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley and Sasha Banks having a contract signing for their Hell in a Cell match. The segment ended with Bayley leaving without signing the contract. Banks vowed that Bayley will be signing the contract one way or another.

Steve Austin, two more special guests set for WWE SmackDown pre-show

Fox Sports has announced a few special guests for tonight’s SmackDown season premiere pre-show.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, and MLB legend David Ortiz will be making appearances during Fox’s pre-show broadcast for tonight’s SmackDown. The special 30-minute pre-show will begin on Fox at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time and will be hosted by Michael Cole, Renee Paquette (formerly known as Renee Young in WWE), and Booker T. This will be Paquette’s first appearance on WWE-related programming since she bid farewell to the company this August.

Tonight’s season premiere edition of SmackDown is the first episode since this year’s WWE Draft. Here’s what’s been announced for the show:

  • Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against Braun Strowman
  • The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Street Profits defend against Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode
  • Jeff Hardy vs. Lars Sullivan
  • Daniel Bryan returns to WWE TV

Bryan’s appearance will kick off tonight’s SmackDown. The New Day vs. Sheamus, Nakamura & Cesaro six-man tag is being billed as The New Day’s SmackDown farewell match. Kingston & Woods were drafted to Raw in the WWE Draft, while Big E is staying on SmackDown. Kingston & Woods are the Raw Tag Team Champions after swapping titles with The Street Profits this Monday.

Daniel Bryan returning to WWE TV, Tag title match set for SmackDown

SmackDown’s season premiere episode will include Daniel Bryan’s return to WWE television.

WWE has announced that Bryan will make his WWE ThunderDome debut as he kicks off this Friday’s season premiere edition of SmackDown. Bryan remained on SmackDown when he was drafted as the brand’s third pick during the second night of the WWE Draft this Monday.

Bryan and his wife Brie Bella welcomed the birth of their second child, a boy named Buddy Dessert Danielson, this August. Bryan hasn’t made an in-person appearance on SmackDown since June.

A SmackDown Tag Team title match has also been added to this Friday’s SmackDown season premiere episode. SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Street Profits will defend their titles against Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode.

The Street Profits were SmackDown’s second pick during night two of the WWE Draft. They were the Raw Tag Team Champions when they got picked, but there was a segment on Monday’s Raw where The Street Profits and The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) swapped Tag Team title belts.

Kingston & Woods retained their Raw Tag Team titles against Ziggler & Roode on Monday. Ziggler & Roode were drafted to SmackDown on the episode and did a post-show interview where they said they’re coming after The Street Profits’ titles.

Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship, The New Day (Big E, Kingston & Woods) vs. Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro in a six-man tag match, and Jeff Hardy vs. Lars Sullivan are also set for this week’s SmackDown. To celebrate the season premiere, Fox will also have a special 30-minute pre-show prior to SmackDown. It will begin on Fox at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time and will be hosted by Renee Paquette (formerly known as Renee Young in WWE) and Booker T.

The six-man tag is being billed as The New Day’s SmackDown farewell match. While Kingston & Woods were drafted to Raw, Big E is remaining on SmackDown.

Jeff Hardy vs. Lars Sullivan set for WWE SmackDown season premiere

Lars Sullivan’s first match in more than a year will take place on this week’s episode of SmackDown.

WWE has announced that Sullivan will face Jeff Hardy on SmackDown this Friday. Sullivan returned to WWE television on SmackDown last week and laid out Hardy & Matt Riddle after they defeated The Miz & John Morrison in a tag match. Though Morrison tried to pull his partner to safety, Sullivan also laid out Miz as well.

Sullivan had been off TV since June 2019 due to a knee injury. It was announced after his appearance on last Friday’s SmackDown that Sullivan will be part of the night two WWE Draft pool and eligible to be selected by Raw or SmackDown tonight. Hardy and Riddle are also eligible to be picked tonight, while Miz & Morrison were drafted to Raw last week.

This week’s SmackDown is being billed as the season premiere edition of the show. Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against Braun Strowman on the episode, and The New Day will have their SmackDown farewell match as they take on Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro & Sheamus in a six-man tag. Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods returned to action and defeated Nakamura & Cesaro for the SmackDown Tag Team titles last Friday. After the match, it was revealed that Kingston & Woods have been drafted to Raw and Big E is staying on SmackDown.

There will be a special 30-minute pre-show airing on Fox before the SmackDown season premiere this Friday. The pre-show will be hosted by Renee Paquette (formerly known as Renee Young in WWE) and Booker T.

Universal title match set for WWE SmackDown season premiere

Two matches have been announced for next week’s season premiere episode of SmackDown.

Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against Braun Strowman on SmackDown’s season premiere next Friday. After being split up in the WWE Draft, The New Day will have their “farewell to SmackDown” match next Friday. Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods & Big E will face Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura & Sheamus in a six-man tag match.

The Reigns vs. Strowman title match comes in advance of Reigns defending his Universal Championship against Jey Uso at Hell in a Cell on Sunday, October 25. It was announced on SmackDown tonight that Reigns vs. Uso will be the first-ever Hell in a Cell I Quit match. Reigns also warned Uso that — after Uso says I Quit — there will be consequences.

Kingston & Woods returned to the ring on SmackDown tonight and defeated Cesaro & Nakamura to win the SmackDown Tag Team titles. After the match, it was announced that Kingston & Woods have been drafted to Raw and Big E has been drafted to SmackDown. Big E also defeated Sheamus in a falls count anywhere match tonight.

Reigns stayed on SmackDown in tonight’s draft. Strowman, Cesaro, Nakamura, and Sheamus are in the night two draft pool and are eligible to be selected by SmackDown or Raw on Monday.

There will be a special 30-minute pre-show airing on Fox before next week’s SmackDown season premiere. The pre-show is a Fox broadcast that will be hosted by Renee Paquette (formerly known as Renee Young in WWE) and Booker T.
