Thunder Rosa getting NWA Women’s title rematch on AEW Dynamite

Thunder Rosa is getting her rematch for the NWA Women’s Championship.

AEW announced tonight that NWA Women’s Champion Serena Deeb will defend her title against Thunder Rosa on Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite: “#BreakingNews – #AEW’s @TonyKhan & the @nwa’s @billy  have agreed that this Wed, 11/18 Live on #AEWDynamite, @SerenaDeeb will defend the NWA Women’s World Championship against former champ @thunderrosa22 in the much anticipated rematch!”

Deeb defeated Thunder Rosa for the NWA Women’s Championship on the October 27 edition of UWN Primetime Live. At AEW’s Full Gear pay-per-view earlier this month, Deeb retained her title against Allysin Kay on the pre-show but was confronted by Thunder Rosa after. They went face-to-face and Thunder Rosa motioned that she wants the NWA Women’s title back.

Deeb’s match against Kay at Full Gear was her second defense of the title. Deeb also retained against Leyla Hirsch on the October 28 episode of Dynamite.

Here’s the updated lineup for Wednesday’s Dynamite:

  • PAC vs. The Blade
  • TNT Champion Darby Allin & Cody vs. Brian Cage & Ricky Starks
  • AEW Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks vs. Top Flight in a non-title match
  • Orange Cassidy vs. Kip Sabian
  • NWA Women’s Champion Serena Deeb defends against Thunder Rosa
  • The Inner Circle’s trip to Las Vegas

NWA Women’s title match set for AEW Full Gear pre-show

The NWA Women’s Championship will be on the line on the pre-show for this Saturday’s Full Gear pay-per-view.

AEW’s Tony Khan announced tonight that NWA Women’s Champion Serena Deeb will defend her title against Allysin Kay on The Buy In for Full Gear this Saturday: “Before tonight’s huge Live #AEWDynamite on TNT, I’ve just secured a big new match for Saturday at The Buy-In available to all! After her NWA World Women’s Title win last week + 1st defense on Dynamite. @SerenaDeeb will defend her title against former champion @Sienna Allysin Kay!”

Deeb won the NWA Women’s Championship from Thunder Rosa on last week’s edition of UWN Primetime Live. In her first title defense, Deeb retained against Leyla Hirsch on Dynamite last Wednesday.

Kay formerly held the NWA Women’s Championship from April 2019 to January 2020. She announced earlier this week that she’s now a free agent: “As of today, I am officially a free agent. Thank you to the NWA for the opportunities, which included one of my favorite matches of my career. I am open for indy bookings & appearances. Let’s get weird. AK”

Orange Cassidy vs. John Silver was originally set for The Buy In, but Khan revealed earlier today that it’s being moved to the Full Gear main card.

Here’s the updated lineup for Full Gear:

  • AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defends against Eddie Kingston in an I Quit match
  • AEW Tag Team Champions FTR defend against The Young Bucks (if The Young Bucks lose, they won’t challenge for the AEW Tag Team titles again)
  • AEW Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida defends against Nyla Rose
  • TNT Champion Cody defends against Darby Allin
  • World title eliminator tournament finals: Kenny Omega vs. Hangman Page
  • Chris Jericho vs. MJF (if MJF wins, he joins the Inner Circle)
  • Elite Deletion match: Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara
  • Orange Cassidy vs. John Silver
  • NWA Women’s Champion Serena Deeb defends against Allysin Kay (pre-show)

Deeb wins NWA Women’s title, first title defense set for AEW Dynamite

Serena Deeb won the NWA Women’s title tonight on Primetime Live, and the first title defense will be on Dynamite.

Deeb defeated Thunder Rosa to win the championship for the first time. The finish had Rosa in control with a German suplex and a knee strike, but Deeb surprised Rosa by rolling her up for the win. The two shook hands following the match.

Deeb is currently under AEW contract, with the company announcing her signing back in September. On Twitter, Tony Khan announced that the first title defense would take place on Dynamite against Leyla Hirsch.

“Congratulations to the new @nwa Women’s World Champion @SerenaDeeb!” Khan wrote on Twitter. “She’ll make her 1st title defense v. @LegitLeyla on #AEWDynamite tomorrow night, Wednesday on TNT at 8pm ET/7pm CT on a huge show with several big matches on the card! Thank you great fans who make AEW possible!”

Rosa won the championship at the NWA Hard Times iPPV event in Atlanta, Georgia in January, defeating Allysin Kay. She had held the championship for 278 days.

UWN Primetime Live is a collaboration between the NWA, Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, and other promotions under the Championship Wrestling umbrella. NWA titles have been defended on the program in recent weeks. Elijah Burke defeated Zicky Dice to win the NWA Television championship on the October 20 episode.

Big Swole vs. Serena Deeb added to this week’s AEW Dynamite

Big Swole will make her return to AEW Dynamite Wednesday in a match against Serena Deeb.

Swole hasn’t been in action since her Tooth and Nail win over Britt Baker at September’s All Out, but does have a Dark match set for Tuesday against Skyler Moore. If she wins, she’ll go into Wednesday on a six-match winning streak.

After making her debut in early-September against NWA Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa on Dynamite and signing a contract shortly thereafter, Deeb is coming off a September 10th Dark win over KiLynn King.

This Wednesday’s show is centered around the 30th anniversary celebration for Chris Jericho’s wrestling career.

The card announced thus far:

  • TNT Champion Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Cody in a dog collar match
  • FTW Champion Brian Cage vs. Will Hobbs
  • Tag Team Champions FTR vs. Hybrid2 in a 20-minute “Brush With Greatness” challenge
  • Jericho and Jake Hager vs. Luther and Serpentico

Serena Deeb off UWN Primetime Live as COVID-19 precaution

Serena Deeb is off next Tuesday’s edition of the United Wrestling Network’s Primetime Live after coming into contact with someone who later tested positive for COVID-19.

Deeb was scheduled to face Allysin Kay on Primetime Live next Tuesday (September 29). Kay will now face Nicole Savoy on the show.

“Earlier this week, I came into contact with an individual who later tested positive for COVID-19. I am taking extra precaution and will be self quarantining for 10 days,” Deeb said in a statement. “Due to this, I unfortunately have to postpone the match at Primetime Live next week with Allysin Kay. I offer my utmost apologies for this. This is a serious matter, and the health and safety of everyone involved always comes first.”

The NWA has partnered with UWN for the weekly Primetime Live pay-per-view series. The NWA tweeted about Deeb being off next Tuesday’s show: “Allysin Kay is going to have a hell of a battle on her hands with Nicole Savoy at Prime Time Live on 9/29! We wish Serena Deeb all the best & look forward to when we can reschedule.”

Deeb worked as a coach for WWE prior to April’s roster cuts. She made her AEW in-ring debut earlier this month. It was announced this week that she’s signed with AEW.

AEW announces signing of Serena Deeb

After making her return to the ring earlier this month, Serena Deeb is now officially part of AEW as the company announced her signing Monday.

Per usual, no terms were disclosed. It’s unknown whether her role will be that of just wrestler or as a trainer as well.

As part of the pandemic related financial cuts, the 34-year-old was released by WWE after more than two years as a coach at the Performance Center.

In her AEW debut, she faced NWA Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa on Dynamite in a well-recieved match and will face KiLynn King on Tuesday’s Dark. Before that, she was last seen in the WWE Mae Young Classic in 2017 in a second round loss to Piper Niven. Trained in OVW, Deeb spent time in Shimmer, the indies, and WWE as part of CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society.

The signing is the latest for AEW who also added Miro (Rusev) and Will Hobbs this month.

Serena Deeb to face Thunder Rosa on AEW Dynamite

Serena Deeb will be making her AEW debut tonight on Dynamite.

Deeb will face the NWA Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa in a singles match, AEW social media confirmed this afternoon. This would be her first match since the 2017 Mae Young Classic tournament, where she lost to Piper Niven in the second round.

Following the tournament, she was hired by WWE as a coach at the WWE Performance Center. However, she, along with fellow trainers Kendo Kashin and Ace Steel, were cut in April as part of WWE’s wide-ranging cutbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thunder Rosa has been seen on Dynamite in recent weeks, challenging AEW Women’s champion Hikaru Shida to a title match at All Out. Shida accepted the match, which will take place this Saturday, September 5.

Deeb previously wrestled for the WWE between 2009-10, with her most prolific role being part of CM Punk’s followers who were collectively known as the Straight Edge Society.

Ace Steel, Serena Deeb & Kendo Kashin furloughed by WWE

Three WWE Performance Center coaches — Ace Steel, Serena Deeb, and Kendo Kashin — were all furloughed Wednesday as part of WWE’s mass layoffs and personnel changes.

The 47-year-old Steel (Chris Guy) signed on as a coach in 2019 after an extensive career working in Ring of Honor, Impact Wrestling, and the indies. He was in WWE developmental from 2004 through 2007 and played the role of Donald Trump in a 2008 Raw skit with a Rosie O’Donnell impersonator. He also trained both CM Punk and Colt Cabana. Squared Circle Sirens first reported his furlough.

Deeb was signed as a coach in February 2018. She was in WWE for the better part of two years, best known for her role in CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society. A 2005 Ohio Valley Wrestling trainee, the 33-year-old has worked extensively in both OVW, Shimmer, and the indies. Squared Circle Sirens first reported her furlough.

The 51-year-old Kashin (Tokimitsu Ishizawa) is a former IWGP junior heavyweight champion and worked for New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Japan Pro Wrestling for the majority of his career. He also fought six times profesionally in MMA, going 1-4-1. He was signed as a coach in August 2019.

By being furloughed, the employee is unpaid for an indefinite period of time, but is still associated with the company and could be brought back. For example, WWE furloughed nine producers that are not needed currently because the company can’t do house shows.

The company released several dozen wrestlers, referees, and backstage personnel on both the main roster and NXT as part of cost cutting measures associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

Serena Deeb joins WWE Performance Center as coach

In an interview that was posted on WWE.com today, it was revealed that Serena Deeb has joined the Performance Center as a coach.

Deeb told WWE.com that she’ll be a coach for the women’s wrestlers and the goal is that she’ll eventually be teaching her own class.

After retiring in 2015, Deeb wrestled twice in the Mae Young Classic last summer. PWInsider reported last month that she was at the Performance Center after previously being spotted in Pittsburgh, which they noted was possibly to undergo medical testing ahead of returning to WWE in some capacity.

“The offer presented itself initially almost a year ago,” Deeb said. “It was pre-Mae Young Classic. I knew of the tournament and was aware of it, and then I was contacted by the company to see if I had any interest in being one of the talent in the tournament, but it was also coupled with the idea of potentially coming in as a coach following the tournament.”

“The tournament was the first stop on the tracks, and following that, I came back in a week in the fall for an official coaching tryout, and following that, it was pretty quickly offered,” Deeb said.

Deeb was featured on WWE television as part of CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society during her first stint with the company.
