ROH Women’s title match set for upcoming Stardom event

Athena’s next ROH Women’s title match is set.

Following the events of Wrestle Dynasty, Athena agreed to a title match against Thekla at an upcoming Stardom event at Korakuen Hall on January 13. The match was made during backstage interviews made following the International Women’s Cup four-way match.

During the Wrestle Dynasty opener, Thekla prevented Athena from covering stablemate Momo Watanabe. The distraction allowed Watanabe to strike Athena with a baseball bat, eventually giving Watanabe the win, becoming the first-ever International Cup winner and earning a future title match.

Athena and Thekla previously had a confrontation backstage after they teamed together successfully at Stardom New Year Dream on Friday, defeating Tay Melo and Mina Shirakawa. After Athena reiterated that she is the Forever ROH World Champion, Thekla requested a title match, which Athena rejected.

Athena successfully defended the ROH Women’s title last month, defeating Billie Starks at ROH Final Battle. She has been champion for over 750 days, first winning the title from Mercedes Martinez at Final Battle 2022.

Athena to defend ROH Women’s title at AEW Battle of the Belts X

Ring of Honor Women’s Champion Athena will look to extend her lengthy win streak and title defense streak on Saturday’s AEW Battle of the Belts X.

Athena will defend against Red Velvet who is still looking for her first AEW or ROH title. She is 5-1 in her brief ROH run and is coming off a March loss to Queen Aminata in the recent Women’s TV title tournament.

This will be their first ever time sharing the ring together.

Athena last defended her title at last Friday’s ROH Supercard of Honor against former AEW Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida. That was her 20th title defense dating back to December 2022. She has won her last 19 singles matches in both ROH.

This will be her first appearance on AEW TV since a July 2023 loss to Willow Nightingale in the Owen Hart Foundation women’s tournament. Her last AEW match came at last October’s WrestleDream pre-show in an eight-person tag team match.

Here’s the current card for the live 10 PM Eastern special that follows AEW Collision:

  • AEW International Champion Roderick Strong vs. Rocky Romero in a title eliminator match
  • FTW Champion Hook defends against Shane Taylor
  • ROH Women’s Champion Athena defends against Red Velvet

ROH hasn’t revealed when either champion will be crowned.

After the title had been out of use since 2006, ROH announced last month that the Pure Championship is returning. Pure title matches featured rules where “closed-fist punches were illegal, and each competitor was allowed three rope breaks to stop submission holds and pinfalls during the match; after that, pinfalls and submission holds on or under the ropes would be legal.”

The ROH Women’s Championship is replacing the Women of Honor title. Kelly Klein was Women of Honor Champion during her departure from ROH last year.

ROH holding tournament to crown new Women’s Champion

Ring of Honor is replacing their Women’s title with a new championship.

Following the departure of champion Kelly Klein at the end of last year, ROH has revealed how they’re handling their Women’s title situation. A tournament to crown a new champion will begin at Quest for Gold in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Friday, April 24. The show is taking place at the 2300 Arena and will feature eight first-round matches in the tournament.

The winner of the tournament will receive the ROH Women’s World Championship, with that title replacing the Women of Honor World Championship.

The promotion hyped that the title “will take women’s wrestling in ROH to the highest level” and that the tournament “will feature talent from all over the world, including some new faces who have never competed in ROH.”

Tickets for Quest for Gold will go on sale to HonorClub members at 10 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, February 19 and to the general public at 10 a.m. Eastern on Friday, February 21.

Sumie Sakai was crowned as the inaugural Women of Honor Champion at Supercard of Honor XII in 2018. Klein held the title three times during its existence, with Mayu Iwatani and Angelina Love also having title reigns.
