Ric Flair says knee injury stressed Charlotte out: ‘She’ll come back from this’

Ric Flair is confident that his daughter Charlotte Flair will be able to come back strong from her injury.

Charlotte is facing an extended time out of action after suffering a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. The injury happened during a match where Asuka defeated Charlotte on the December 8 episode of SmackDown. The following week, WWE announced that Charlotte is expected to be out of action for nine months.

While appearing on Casual Conversations with The Classic, Ric Flair said he’s told Charlotte that she’ll come back from this injury. Ric thinks it’ll be “the greatest storyline of all time.” Ric said Charlotte was stressed out by the injury because she hasn’t been hurt in a long time.

Ric also said he believes Charlotte is the best worker in the industry:

I’m telling you, and it’ll probably make her mad, she is the best worker in the business –man or woman. She can do stuff Rey Mysterio does. She’s 5 [foot] 11 and weighs 150 pounds. She is the best worker in the business — male or female.

She never politics, you know what I mean? In this horrible world of politics in the business, she don’t kiss anybody’s ass. She just gets better every day.

I told her, she’ll come back from this injury. It stressed her out because she hasn’t been hurt in a long time. But she’s so muscled up and I mean, she’ll come through the surgery and they’ll put some stem cells in her and she’ll come back and it’ll be the greatest storyline of all time. She and Bayley and IYO and all those guys and Asuka, I mean. And there are more people for her to still wrestle. She’s got so much going on for her.

Flair said he’s not knocking any of the other members of the women’s division, but he thinks Charlotte is the best.

Charlotte was feuding with Damage CTRL prior to suffering her knee injury.

Dave Meltzer confirmed this week that Charlotte signed a new WWE contract several months ago. Fightful reported that the contract is for a “huge money increase” and is “one of the highest-paid deals to a woman in WWE history.”

While Charlotte is in WWE, Ric Flair is signed to a multi-year deal with AEW.

Tony Khan: Ric Flair ‘essentially paying us’ for his AEW appearances

According to AEW head Tony Khan, the company isn’t paying anything for Ric Flair’s appearances and that he “is essentially paying us.”

Talking to the New York Post about the road to Sting’s retirement match at March’s Revolution, Khan was asked about Flair’s inclusion as part of the final countdown. It first started when they were approached by Flair’s Wooooo Energy drink company for a “high-paying sponsorship.”

Khan then said, “We’re not paying Ric Flair; Ric Flair is essentially paying us. We’re getting paid by Wooooo Energy for all of his appearances, so we’re collecting revenue from them.”

He did not say how much revenue that was.

Flair debuted on a late-October edition of AEW Dynamite as Khan’s “special gift” to Sting and was later announced as signing a multi-year deal (later revealed by Flair as two) with AEW in conjunction with his energy drink becoming the official one of AEW.

Last week, Flair tweeted that he would leave the company is he was embarrassing Khan. While not specifically mentioning it, that came on the heels of a taped Rampage promo where a part about him inviting women between 18 and 28 years old to his hotel room was omitted prior to broadcast.

Khan said he approached Sting before the All In ticket sale announcement to see if he would be returning to London’s Wembley Stadium. However, Sting felt he couldn’t make it and they worked toward the final date.

Ric Flair says he ‘will walk away’ if he is embarrassing AEW

Ric Flair has announced that he “will walk away” from AEW if he is embarrassing the company.

In a social media post on Thursday, Flair addressed “negativity” that he is hearing regarding his AEW run, said that he will leave the company if he is embarrassing it, and issued an apology that appeared to be directed towards AEW owner, president, CEO, GM, and head of creative Tony Khan.

Flair posted to his X and Instagram accounts:

I Am So Tired Of Hearing All This Negativity! I Don’t Need To Work, And I Don’t Need The Money. Can’t I Simply Enjoy Being By My Dear Friend @Sting’s Side For The Next Few Months Without So Much Hatred? I Know I’m Old, But That Doesn’t Mean I Can’t Enjoy Life! I Have Earned The Right To Do Whatever I Want & I’m Exactly Where I Want To Be! I Appreciate Everything @TonyKhan, But I’m More Than Willing To Walk Away If I Am Embarrassing You And Your Company. All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry!

Flair’s post could be in reference to social media backlash and chatter from a line he delivered in an in-ring promo on Wednesday night in a segment taped for Friday’s Rampage episode where he issued an invitation to women in the audience from ages 18 to 28 to come to his hotel room with “no boyfriends or husbands.” Flair famously used similar verbiage in promos with Jim Crockett Promotions/WCW in the 1980s.

Steve Austin and Kevin Nash are among the wrestling personalities who posted responses to Flair in the comments section on Instagram.

Austin posted:

Ric, I enjoy watching you do all the things you do. And you’re always having fun. Keep doing you. And that’s the bottom line.

Nash posted:

Besides the fact you have earned the right. You wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t drawing fans. You always bring a smile to my face. Go Michigan!

Ric Flair: MJF is special, has ‘a gift that so few have’

Backstage at Wednesday night’s AEW Dynamite, Ric Flair and MJF met up for the first time ever.

Flair made a post on X commenting on the moment, writing that he was honored to have met MJF. Flair said MJF is special and has “a gift that so few have.”

Flair wrote:

I Met @The_MJF Last Night. OMG! He Has THE GIFT! I’m Honored To Have Met You. Looking Forward To Working With You & Our Relationship Going Forward. You’ve Got A Gift That So Few Have! You’re Special! WOOOOO!

This October, Flair made his surprise AEW debut by being brought into the company as part of Sting’s retirement tour. Sting is having his final match at AEW Revolution 2024.

Flair has signed a multi-year contract with AEW. Flair and AEW have also reached an agreement to make Flair’s Wooooo! Energy the official energy drink of the promotion.

MJF is defending his AEW World Championship against Jay White at this Saturday’s Full Gear pay-per-view in Los Angeles. MJF will also be in action on the Full Gear pre-show, defending the ROH Tag Team titles with a mystery partner against Austin & Colten Gunn. MJF & Adam Cole are the current ROH Tag Team Champions, but Cole is out of action due to injury.

The main event angle on last night’s Dynamite saw MJF get laid out by White, Juice Robinson, and The Gunns.

Ric Flair’s AEW contract runs for two years

Ric Flair says he will be with AEW for at least the next two years.

Speaking on a special edition of Wrestling Observer Radio on Thursday, Flair and business partner Chad Bronstein said that Flair is tied to AEW for the next two years.

Flair also said that he expects to be a television character for the duration of his deal, not just for the Sting retirement storyline that was the impetus for his on-screen AEW introduction.

Dave Meltzer asked Flair:

So you’re going to be part of the TV for two years?

Flair answered:

Yes. 76 and still talking. Wooooo!

Flair will be 76 years old when his AEW deal expires.

AEW officially announced Flair’s signing in a press release Thursday after his on-screen debut with the company came on last week’s Dynamite episode.

Flair’s Wooooo! Energy drink was also announced as the official energy drink of AEW in the press release issued Thursday.

In the Wrestling Observer Radio interview, Flair discussed his career, favorite opponents, best wrestling memories, Terry Funk, Steve “Mongo” McMichael, and much more.

Audio of the interview is available for website subscribers here, with video from the interview available for YouTube members here.

Ric Flair signs multi-year contract with AEW

Ric Flair is sticking around in AEW on a long-term basis.

AEW issued a press release on Thursday announcing that Flair has signed a multi-year contract with the company. Flair made his surprise AEW debut on Dynamite last week, reuniting with Sting as part of Sting’s retirement tour.

It was also announced that Flair’s Wooooo! Energy will become the official energy drink of AEW. Wooooo! Energy will be sold at AEW shows, it will be stocked in wrestlers’ locker rooms, and it will be seen on the announcers’ desk during AEW broadcasts.

In a press release, Tony Khan commented on the deal:

Last Wednesday, the ‘Nature Boy’ made his epic return to TBS, more than 35 years since the Flair vs. Sting rivalry first began on the Superstation. It’s truly an honor to welcome the legend himself – and Wooooo! Energy – to AEW.

Ric cemented his legacy as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all-time long ago, and now his world-renowned persona and his amazing wrestling mind will be major assets to AEW’s programming and our position globally. Most importantly, it’s fitting that the final chapter of Sting’s iconic career will unfold on TBS with Ric Flair by his side.

“I’ve been in the wrestling business for over 50 years,” Flair said. “Together with AEW and Wooooo! Energy, I’ve never been more excited, and I’ve never had more energy! When the Nature Boy promises a show, you know how it’s gonna go! Wooooo!”

Sting will have his retirement match at AEW’s Revolution pay-per-view in 2024. Last Thursday, Sting noted that Flair would be with him “every step of the way” on this journey.

Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Flair likely would have been in AEW sooner if it wasn’t for the controversy surrounding Vice TV’s “Plane Ride from Hell” episode of Dark Side of the Ring. The episode aired in 2021. On the show, flight attendant Heidi Doyle recounted her story of Flair exposing himself and forcing her to touch his genitals. Flair has denied the allegations.

“Flair had no contractual ties with WWE,” Meltzer wrote. “He probably would have come in earlier as they were in talks when the Dark Side of the Ring episode hit and pretty much all talks ended. But Tony Khan wanted him to be part of the Sting storyline.”

Sting originally considered December for AEW retirement

Ric Flair is set to help Sting ride into the sunset.

Two weeks ago, Sting revealed his final match will take place at AEW Revolution 2024. He recently told Sports Illustrated that he wanted to retire earlier but having Flair in AEW has motivated him to continue until next March’s pay-per-view.

“I wanted to finish earlier, maybe in December,” Sting said. “But now that Ric is here with me, I want to go longer, all the way to Revolution.”

Flair was Tony Khan’s gift to Sting on last week’s Dynamite. It was one of only two times in his career that Sting says he’s been emotional on-air.

“I’ve been emotional, full of tears, twice in my career. The first was Panama City when Ric and I had the last WCW match on Nitro. The second was last week on Dynamite.”

“When Ric came out and I heard his music play, it hit me,” Sting continued. “I had this flashback, and it made me emotional. Ric is the guy who put me on the map. We’ve traveled around the world together, and Ric helped make me. Now he’s going to finish with me.”

“After all the travel, all the matches, all the press slams, all the chops, and all the woos–woooo!–I experienced the same feeling on Dynamite this past week with Ric that I did on that final Nitro. Except this time, it was so much more positive.”

As for what Sting has planned for the final months of his career, all he will say is that he wants to leave people with a memory that will mean something.

“All I can say for now is I want people to walk away and say, ‘Wow, what an ending,’” Sting continued. “I’ll be three weeks away from turning 65 at that point. I want to leave people with a memory that will mean something.”

Neither Sting nor Flair has been announced for tonight’s AEW Dynamite in Louisville, Kentucky.

Since a bunch of people noted this regarding today’s Observer, “Whoop that Trick” is actually a chant from the Memphis Grizzlies NBA team, which made its way to NXT and Trick Williams. So when AEW fans were chanting it at the Memphis house show, it was not a sign of how over Trick Williams was or them doing a WWE chant. Now when AEW fans are doing “Yeah,” that is the case that they are doing something that WWE fans got over.

Ronda Rousey wrestled a short match last night on the Lucha Va Voom show so she could team with Marina Shafir for the first time. Then today Wrestling Revolver made a Tweet about a Los Angeles debut at the Homenetmen Glendale Ararat in Los Angeles and Rousey tweeted “How very convenient.”

Kevin Iole reported that the Saudi Arabian government paid Mike Tyson “very, very handsomely” for endorsing Francis Ngannou and being in Ngannou’s corner for tomorrow’s fight with Tyson Fury and telling people Ngannou can win. They say he trained him but Ngannou trained under Dewey Cooper. I heard a figure from a friend of Tyson’s who asked me not to print it but it was a giant figure just to do pub. They are also bringing in Manny Pacquiao, Roberto Duran, George Foreman, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Joe Calzaghe, Tommy Hearns and Frank Bruno according to Iole. Both Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell are also going.

Stipe Miocic himself said that he was never offered to fight for the interim title. Tom Aspinall had said UFC told him he was in because Miocic didn’t want to do it. Miocic said he was fine waiting for Jones to heal up. Dana White said it would have been an insult to ask Miocic to fight for the interim title.

In our article in the new issue on NIL deals with WWE, Peyton Prussian, who won the NAIA women’s national championship at 117 pounds in amateur wrestling, was the other wrestler under a deal. She also just signed a deal to be trained and go to NXT.

Ric Flair makes surprise AEW debut, reunites with Sting

Ric Flair has made his AEW debut.

Flair made a surprise appearance on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, joining Sting and Tony Schiavone in the ring. Flair put over Sting and said he was one of the nicest people in pro wrestling, also mentioning their match on TBS back at the first Clash of the Champions in 1988.

Christian Cage interrupted the promo and after mocking Flair, issued a challenge to Sting and Darby Allin for a three-on-three match. Sting said they would find a third partner against Cage, Luchasaurus, and Nick Wayne.

It was announced last week that Tony Khan would have a special gift for Sting. In the control center hyping Wednesday’s Dynamite, Schiavone said that the gift would be historic.

Flair had what he called his last match last year, teaming with son-in-law Andrade El Idolo against Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal on a show promoted under the Jim Crockett Promotions banner. He also participated in a documentary on his career that streamed on Peacock in conjunction with WWE.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Main Event Wrestling magazine review

As I wrap up work on my upcoming DragonKingKarl Stern’s 1984-1985 Pro Wrestling Omnibus book, I wanted to review a magazine from that timeframe on this week’s show.

So, I struck outside the usual Apter mags and decided to review a George Napolitano offering: Main Event Wrestling from November 1984 featuring Hulk Hogan, Kerry Von Erich, Jimmy Snuka, and a ton of Puerto Rican news for some reason.

Also, there’s a hilarious Kerry Von Erich vs. Ric Flair photo and, hands down, some of the wackiest ads I have seen so far. Grab your witches’ amulet and questionable firearm and let’s talk some wrestling from the fall of 1984.
