DragonKingKarl: June 28, 1986 Wrestling Observer Newsletter review

Karl Stern is back with a new DragonKingKarl Show, discussing the June 28, 1986, issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer.

In 1986, former NWA World Heavyweight Champion and the top star of World Class Championship Wrestling, Kerry Von Erich (Kerry Adkisson) was riding his motorcycle in Texas when he slammed into the back of a police car which was slowing down to make a turn.

This simple accident would have lifelong repercussions for Kerry who, ultimately, would lose part of his foot due to complications. On today’s podcast, the focus is on Dave’s coverage of that incident.

DragonKingKarl: June 16, 1986 Wrestling Observer Newsletter review

This week on the DragonKingKarl classic wrestling podcast, Karl Stern takes a look back at the June 16, 1986, issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer, one of the sources used in his DragonKingKarl’s 1986-1987 Pro Wrestling Omnibus.

This is an issue with a huge news story discussing the severe motorcycle accident suffered by Kerry Von Erich which ultimately led to the partial amputation of his foot. There’s also Billy Jack Haynes, Roddy Piper, and a major AWA show heading to Denver.

Plus, there’s news on the NWA Great American Bash 1986 tour series.

DragonKingKarl: A look at WWF Magazine from December 1990

Today on Karl Stern’s DragonKingKarl Show, we hop in the time machine and set it for the fall of 1990.

Pro wrestling was slumping but not yet bottoming out and when the December 1990 issue of WWF Magazine hit the stands, the Texas Tornado (Kerry Von Erich) graced the cover.

Inside was tons of hype for the then-four man Survivor Series where Teams of Four strive to score or something like that. Anyway, the magazine seemed hyperfixated on getting over Saba Simba which makes for some pretty weird reading in 2025.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Why May 1984 was a huge month in wrestling

On a new DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show, I have a detailed look at the month of May 1984 in pro wrestling history.

It was one of the most significant months ever: Kerry Von Erich wins the NWA World title from Ric Flair in the largest show in Texas history followed by Flair regaining the title in Japan, Rick Martel becomes AWA World champion, Vince McMahon Sr. dies, Andy Kaufman dies, and much more.

If you are a fan of classic old school pro wrestling history, this is a great jumping on point.

It’s a massive two year period in pro wrestling so let’s discuss it.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Main Event Wrestling magazine review

As I wrap up work on my upcoming DragonKingKarl Stern’s 1984-1985 Pro Wrestling Omnibus book, I wanted to review a magazine from that timeframe on this week’s show.

So, I struck outside the usual Apter mags and decided to review a George Napolitano offering: Main Event Wrestling from November 1984 featuring Hulk Hogan, Kerry Von Erich, Jimmy Snuka, and a ton of Puerto Rican news for some reason.

Also, there’s a hilarious Kerry Von Erich vs. Ric Flair photo and, hands down, some of the wackiest ads I have seen so far. Grab your witches’ amulet and questionable firearm and let’s talk some wrestling from the fall of 1984.
