Mask vs. title challenge, AEW Trios title defense both set for AEW Dynasty

Image: AEW

With less than two weeks to go, next month’s AEW Dynasty card is starting to round into shape after two title challenges that were made Wednesday.

During Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, reigning Ring of Honor World Champion Chris Jericho offered to put his title on the line against former champion and recent rival Bandido in a title vs. mask match. Bandido wasn’t on the show to accept.

Jericho, fuming after Bandido took his brother Gravity’s mask back last Sunday at Collision, made the challenge and questioned whether it was worth it for Bandido to see his mother cry like she did at Revolution and to suffer the humiliation of being unmasked.

The two squared off on the February 22nd Collision with Jericho successfully defending the title. Bandido has put Jericho in his crosshairs since returning last December after a long injury absence.

AEW Trios Champions Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta & PAC of the Death Riders will defend their titles against Rated FTR of Dax Harwood, Cash Wheeler and Cope.

Cope issued the challenge during a pre-taped sitdown interview with FTR and Tony Schiavone. Harwood addressed his actions from last week where he walked away from Cope and Wheeler, apologizing and seemingly getting on the same page again. Wheeler said he wanted the Trios titles and Cope then made the challenge.

The champions later accepted with PAC saying they challenged them to survive them at Dynasty. When Cope returned from injury in late-December, he targeted the Death Riders and recently went 0-2 in AEW World title challenges of faction leader Jon Moxley. Yuta will face Harwood this Saturday on Collision.

Here’s the updated lineup for Sunday, April 6th in Philadelphia, PA:

  • AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm defends against Megan Bayne
  • AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defends against Swerve Strickland
  • AEW International Champion Kenny Omega defends against Ricochet and Mike Bailey in a three-way
  • AEW Trios Champions Death Riders (Wheeler Yuta, PAC & Claudio Castagnoli) defend against Rated FTR (Cope, Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler)
  • ROH World Champion Chris Jericho defends against Bandido in a title vs. mask match*

VIDEO: Rated FTR speak to hometown crowd at AEW Dynamite Fight for the Fallen

Rated FTR spoke to their hometown crowd in Asheville, North Carolina at the conclusion of Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Fight for the Fallen show.

In a promo after the show went off the air, the trio of Adam “Cope” Copeland, Dax Harwood, and Cash Wheeler discussed their connections to Asheville, the resiliency of its residents, and much more. The segment did not air on TV, but AEW uploaded the video to their YouTube channel.

Copeland, Harwood, and Wheeler all live in Ashevillle.

Wednesday’s Fight for the Fallen was held in Asheville, with some proceeds from the event to be donated to Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in the area.

A Category 4 storm, Hurricane Helene caused more than $100 billion in damages after making landfall in late September, and was the most devastating hurricane to hit the mainland United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Rated FTR defeated The Death Riders in the Fight for the Fallen main event.

Wednesday’s show also featured Copeland debuting his new ring name.

AEW’s Adam Copeland, FTR file to trademark ‘Rated FTR’

A new trios team featuring Adam Copeland, Dax Harwood, and Cash Wheeler could be forming in AEW.

Copeland and FTR filed to trademark the name “Rated FTR” for wrestling purposes on Wednesday, October 18.

The filings were done through attorney Michael E. Dockins on behalf of Wheeler, Harwood, and through the Wet Yeti Inc. company that filed to trademark several potential nicknames for Copeland earlier this month.

FTR and Copeland appeared together in the final moments of Collision on Saturday. All three wrestlers came out to save Bryan Danielson, who was being attacked by Nick Wayne, Luchasaurus, Ricky Starks, and Big Bill at the time.

During an interview with ESPN shortly after his AEW debut at WrestleDream, Copeland listed FTR as people in the company he wants to work with.

“I’ve never wrestled at Tokyo Dome. How about a match against Kazuchika Okada?” Copeland said. “That would be pretty cool. I’m pretty excited by that. How about Jon Moxley? Hell yeah. A singles match in AEW against Bryan Danielson? Miro? Claudio Castagnoli? Kenny Omega? Will Ospreay? Adam Page? Chris Jericho? Malakai Black? FTR in a tag? Teaming with Darby against the Young Bucks? Facing Darby? Facing Sting? A promo battle with Eddie Kingston? The possibilities, they’re keeping me awake at night.”
