PWG reveals lineup for It’s a Long Way to the Top event

PWG has revealed the lineup for their Sunday, November 21 It’s a Long Way to the top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll) event at the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles.

Bandido will defend the PWG World Championship against Alex Shelley. Shelley earned the title shot with a win over Jonathan Gresham at September’s Threemendous VI event. Bandido has held the World title since defeating Jeff Cobb at The Makings of a Varsity Athlete in December 2019.

The PWG World Tag Team Championships will be on the line as Malakai Black and Brody King defend the titles against JD Drake and the debuting Anthony Henry. Black and King won the Tag titles at Threemendous VI.

Lio Rush will make his PWG return in a singles match against Davey Richards. Rush last appeared in PWG in July 2017. Richards challenged Bandido for the PWG title at Threemendous VI.

Aramis and Rey Horus will team against Jack Cartwheel and Alex Zayne.

Daniel Garcia will make his PWG debut in a singles match against Jonathan Gresham. Garcia signing a full-time deal with AEW was announced earlier this week.

PWG announces Mystery Vortex 7 event for August 1

PWG has announced Mystery Vortex 7 for August 1.

The company announced the show Monday evening. It will take place at the Globe Theater in downtown Los Angeles, which has been their home base for shows since 2018. Participants and matches for Mystery Vortex cards are not revealed ahead of time.

This will be the first PWG show since “The Makings of a Varsity Athlete” took place in December of 2019. An event called “KOBE” was scheduled for March of 2020, but that show was delayed due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. PWG officially announced their return last month, announcing the August 1 date.

Current champions in the company are Bandido, who carries the PWG World Heavyweight Championship, and The Rascalz (Dezmond Xavier and Zachary Wentz) are the PWG World Tag Team Champions. During the course of the pandemic, The Rascalz signed with the WWE, where they are in NXT and are the NXT Tag Team Champions as MSK. PWG has not addressed the status of their tag team titles.

PWG saying goodbye to its longtime home venue in Reseda

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla is departing its longtime home venue.

The promotion announced the news last night and revealed the dates for the last three shows that will be taking place at American Legion Post #308 in Reseda, California: “PWG says goodbye to Reseda. The final three shows at the American Legion Hall will take place on April 20th/21st, and May 25th!”

The move, after Reseda had been PWG’s home for the past decade and they’ve been reluctant to use bigger buildings, is being made due to the Legion Hall being sold.

Because of an issue with PayPal where tickets were oversold, last Friday’s “Time is a Flat Circle” was the first PWG show to be held outside of Reseda since the Kurt Russellreunion events in 2010-2012. Time is a Flat Circle took place at the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles, and Dave Meltzer reported that the feeling is the venue will become a regular home base for PWG. Meltzer also noted that there may be other buildings that have to be used at times.

The Globe Theatre fit approximately 700 people for the show, which is an increase from the 400 who could attend in Reseda.

PWG’s two shows in April will be for this year’s All Star Weekend, with Taiji Ishimori (who recently departed Pro Wrestling NOAH), Adam (Hangman) Page, Robbie Eagles, and Tyler Bateman set to debut for the promotion. The Young Bucks will be wrestling at the Legion Hall for the final time as they face Matt Riddle & Jeff Cobb and Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz in a Tag Team title match on night one.

Here are the cards for both nights of All Star Weekend 2018:

April 20th —

  • PWG Tag Team Champions Matt Riddle & Jeff Cobb defending against The Young Bucks and Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz in a three-way match
  • PWG World Champion Keith Lee vs. Adam Page in a non-title match
  • Taiji Ishimori vs. Bandido
  • Brody King & Tyler Bateman vs. Timothy Thatcher & WALTER
  • Joey Janela vs. Jonah Rock
  • Robbie Eagles vs. Flash Morgan Webster vs. Sammy Guevara
  • Trevor Lee vs. Rey Horus

April 21st —

  • PWG World Champion Keith Lee defending against WALTER and Jonah Rock in a three-way match
  • Matt Riddle vs. Timothy Thatcher
  • Sammy Guevara vs. Taiji Ishimori
  • Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz vs. Brody King & Tyler Bateman
  • Trevor Lee vs. Flash Morgan Webster
  • Robbie Eagles vs. Joey Janela
  • Bandido vs. Rey Horus

PWG Game Over Man results: Marty Scurll vs. Chuck Taylor

Here are notes from PWG last night in Reseda, California:

– Lio Rush defeated Rey Fenix with a frog splash.

Rush was shaken up late in the match from a double foot stomp to the back of the head. He seemed out of it momentarily but was able to complete the match. Very difficult match to follow.

– Matt Riddle defeated Adam Cole by submission with the Bro-mission.

– Jeff Cobb defeated Keith Lee with the Tour of the Islands, and that’s a huge man to be doing such a move on.

Lee has major star qualities.

– Michael Elgin defeated Kyle O’Reilly with a powerbomb.

They had a hard-hitting match.

– The Young Bucks defeated War Machine when Nick Jackson pinned Ray Rowe with a cradle.

This was ROH tag champs vs. IWGP tag team champions. They had a long, great match, which was slightly better than their recent match in Japan.

– Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Dick Togo with a cradle.

Very good technical match.

– Chuck Taylor defeated Marty Scurll with his own chicken wing submission while both were laying in thumbtacks in a street fight.

There was one ref bump. Great finish as Taylor introduced the thumbtacks and Scurll went to throw powder but Taylor kicked Scurll’s hand and the powder went in his eyes. Scurll couldn’t see and broke the fingers of the ref, thinking it was Taylor.

Taylor hit a piledriver on Scurll while both refs were down, and the second ref’s hand couldn’t count with the broken fingers. But Taylor got the chicken wing on while both were in the thumbtacks for the submission.

PWG Mystery Vortex live results: Chris Hero addresses his situation

– Trent Baretta defeated Candice LeRae using the Dudebuster.

Baretta did a great job in the role of the guy reluctant to fight a woman while LeRae was mad and would attack him in any way possible. LeRae makes a great babyface in peril and it was as good as it could be for the style they were doing.

– Trevor Lee defeated ACH with a fisherman buster.

Some strong athletic spots from both men. It was hurt by Lee kicking out late twice from near falls.

– Matt Sydal defeated Pete Dunne with a shooting star press.

This was Sydal’s first match in months. I don’t know if the two have ever wrestled before. Sydal still does some really impressive stuff regarding speed and agility. Good but not a blow away match.

– Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly defeated Death By Elbow (Chris Hero & JT Dunn)

Match went nearly a half hour. Some stuff, like Hero’s strikes and some of the other interplay was great, but the crowd was in and out of it. Good match. O’Reilly pinned Hero after Chasing the Dragon.

– Hero did an interview after putting over the other three and also talking about how Baretta and LeRae tore it up earlier and then went on to address the elephant in the room, his own situation. He noted that he really doesn’t know (and right now that is the status of everything). It may be his last time here and it may not be.

He noted the situation with Willie Mack that a lot of guys talk about where he was in, told he was in, but then WWE decided against him being in and he never could get a reason why for months.

– Chuck Taylor defeated Adam Cole in a number one contender for the PWG title match.

A lot of comedy. Taylor is on a long winning streak here, not sure how far back but some thought it could be as long as two years.

– Jeff Cobb & Matt Riddle defeated PWG Tag Team Champions Young Bucks in a non-title match.

It seemed like this was to set up a title match program. Excellent match, very different from any Young Bucks match I’ve seen. The beginning was them selling that one-on-one they can’t compete with the wrestling and grappling and power of Cobb & Riddle. Eventually they used a lot of double-team moves and superkicks of course.

Cobb & Riddle have both improved greatly in the past few months when it comes to confidence and knowing what they need to do to get over. This was an excellent match. Riddle used the Bro 2 Sleep and Cobb used the Tour of the Islands to pin Matt.

It should be noted that Riddle came out first, and then Cobb, and everyone was excited to see them in a singles when the Bucks music came out and it was announced as a tag team match. The two do need to eventually do a singles program here since the match everyone on the indies has booked came from their interplay at BOLA.

– PWG World Champion Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Marty Scurll with a unique armbar type submission in a match that went more than 37 minutes to keep the title.

This was a technical masterpiece. Their styles are perfect for each other and it brought out the best in both men. It was like two technical masters of the old British style with the holds and escapes and counters, combined with modern moves, the strikes, the broken finger spot by Scurll.

Sabre’s selling was tremendous in the sense he’d do little sells of every injury from Scurll’s different body part damage throughout in subtle ways. Felt in many ways like watching a Billy Robinson match against someone of his style where you’d see things you’ve never seen before. They ended the show teasing Sabre vs. Taylor.
