Corey Graves filling in for Pat McAfee on WWE SmackDown this week

Pat McAfee will be absent from the commentary team for tonight’s episode of SmackDown.

On the WWE After the Bell podcast this week, Corey Graves revealed that he’ll be calling tonight’s SmackDown alongside Michael Cole. McAfee is at Lake Tahoe for the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

Tonight’s SmackDown is the post-Money in the Bank episode of the show. There was an angle after Money in the Bank went off the air last Saturday where Happy Corbin attacked McAfee and accepted his challenge for a match at SummerSlam.

After Corbin’s attack, McAfee wore a neck brace while attending UFC 276 in Las Vegas later that night.

McAfee vs. Corbin has been made official for SummerSlam, which is taking place at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, July 30.

McAfee made his WWE main roster in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38 this April. The former NFL All-Pro punter also worked two matches for NXT in 2020.

It was announced yesterday that McAfee has signed a multi-year contract extension with WWE. While the exact length of the extension wasn’t disclosed, WWE stated that the deal “will see McAfee entertaining the WWE Universe for years to come.”

Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas is hosting tonight’s SmackDown.

Pat McAfee signs multi-year contract extension with WWE

Pat McAfee has inked a multi-year contract extension with WWE.

WWE announced the contract extension on Thursday, noting that the new deal “will see McAfee entertaining the WWE Universe for years to come.” The exact length of the extension wasn’t disclosed.

The 35-year-old McAfee has called SmackDown alongside Michael Cole since joining the WWE commentary team in April 2021.

In addition to doing commentary, McAfee has also wrestled for WWE multiple times. He competed for NXT twice in 2020 before making his main roster in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38 this April. McAfee defeated Theory at WrestleMania before then losing an impromptu match against Vince McMahon. The match set up “Stone Cold” Steve Austin appearing and dishing out stunners to Theory, McMahon, and McAfee.

McAfee will step back into the ring when he faces Happy Corbin at SummerSlam on Saturday, July 30. The pay-per-view is being held at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

There was an angle after Money in the Bank went off the air last Saturday where Corbin attacked McAfee and accepted his challenge for a match at SummerSlam.

McAfee was formerly an All-Pro punter for the Indianapolis Colts. After retiring from the NFL in 2017, he became a popular sports media personality and radio show host.

Corbin attacks Pat McAfee after WWE Money in the Bank, accepts SummerSlam challenge

Happy Corbin attacked Pat McAfee following WWE Money in the Bank tonight, accepting McAfee’s challenge for SummerSlam.

In the moments after Money in the Bank went off the air, Corbin attacked McAfee from behind and dragged him into the crowd, laying in punches before sending him back to ringside where he laid him out with the end of days. He then yelled that he accepted McAfee’s challenge for SummerSlam, which will take place later this month on July 31 in Nashville.

Later in the evening, McAfee was shown along with Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, and Paul Levesque at UFC 276 in a neckbrace.

McAfee and Corbin have been feuding since Corbin lost his Last Laugh match against Madcap Moss on SmackDown last month, with McAfee berating Corbin after the loss. After McAfee issued a challenge for a match at SummerSlam, Corbin chose not to respond when asked about it on SmackDown this past Friday.

Here is the current lineup for SummerSlam:

  • Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar in a last man standing match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship
  • Pat McAfee vs. Happy Corbin

Pat McAfee says The Rock gave permission to use catchphrase on WWE SmackDown

Pat McAfee says The Rock gave him permission to use his famous catchphrase on SmackDown.

McAfee challenged Happy Corbin to a match at SummerSlam on the June 24 edition of the show. During the segment, he used a line that was a frequent part of The Rock’s promos.

“When I get to put on the headset and talk into the microphone for the millions…,” McAfee said before allowing the live crowd to add, “and millions!”

McAfee addressed getting The Rock’s approval to use the line during an episode of The Pat McAfee Show on Monday.

“In the wrestling world, when you say somebody else’s catchphrase, it’s kind of, you know, a thing,” he said. “Also, don’t want to go too in the weeds here but did get permission beforehand from Dwayne Johnson to be able to say it.”

McAfee continued to say he had actually gotten The Rock’s permission to use the line during his angle with Austin Theory.

“If you do recall, in my last program, Austin Theory, when I was allowed to speak into the mic, I was in the middle of doing it and then I got interrupted. That was around the time when I originally got the okay to say it. That was in Miami, I think that night actually, so it would’ve went bananas.”

“I’m very, very, very grateful and thankful for The Rock and I appreciate the hell out of him on the back side of it saying ‘hey, pretty good usage of it,” McAfee continued. “I’m very, very thankful for The Rock.”

“That’s huge in the wrestling world. He’s the guy on the microphone.”

Pat McAfee challenges Happy Corbin to WWE SummerSlam match

Pat McAfee has issued a challenge to Happy Corbin to face him at WWE SummerSlam on July 30.

McAfee made the challenge on this week’s SmackDown episode, playing off an angle shot on the prior week’s episode where Corbin and McAfee had a verbal confrontation, and McAfee led the crowd in laughing Corbin out of the arena.

Michael Cole stated during SmackDown that Corbin will respond to McAfee’s challenge on next week’s episode.

McAfee has wrestled a total of four matches for WWE, including two on the same night at WrestleMania 38 this year. McAfee made his WWE in-ring debut in NXT in 2020, wrestling twice for the company that year.

McAfee’s WWE in-ring debut came in NXT with a singles match against Adam Cole at TakeOver: XXX, and he followed up by competing in the WarGames match at TakeOver: WarGames.

At WrestleMania this year, McAfee defeated Austin Theory, then lost to Vince McMahon in an impromptu match immediately after the Theory bout.

SummerSlam takes place on Saturday, July 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar in a Last Man Standing match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship is the only match officially announced for the event to this point.

WWE’s Pat McAfee comments on Vince McMahon allegations

Pat McAfee has commented on the recent allegations against Vince McMahon.

McAfee addressed the situation on Thursday during an episode of The Pat McAfee Show.

“I don’t know, I know less than everybody else,” McAfee said. He continued to say that he’s not really in a position where he would have additional information.

“I don’t know sh–t about f–k, okay? I don’t know s–t about f–k over there. I go in, do my thing, say hello to everybody, I’m out. I’m in maybe the most awesome situation in the history of WWE for anybody. I’m a longtime fan, lifelong fan of the company, but I’m not a part of any of the anything, really. I’m part of no groups, I have no locker room when I go there. I literally just kind of bounce around, do my thing, and I’m out.”

McAfee then offered his thoughts on the situation as someone looking in from the outside.

“I’m going there tomorrow,” he continued. “I’m excited to hear the chatter. Now, obviously, what is being alleged is not fantastic at all, it’s terrible. There will be full investigations.”

“I’m watching along with everybody else in the middle of Indianapolis but that came out of nowhere yesterday. What will happen? TBD. There’s going to be a lot of investigations.”

McAfee then continued to say what types of investigations he thinks there will be.

“There will be an investigation about the investigations too and then those investigations will somehow contradict other investigations. Will we ever get the truth? No, hopefully, we get part of it though and I think that’s what everybody is hoping for.”

“So, who knows how that whole thing will go? It sounds incredibly problematic.”

“I don’t know how that’s going to go,” McAfee then said about the SmackDown tapings on Friday.

Pat McAfee explains reaction to WWE’s Sasha Banks & Naomi suspension announcement

On his radio show today, Pat McAfee explained his reaction to last week’s announcement that Sasha Banks & Naomi have been “suspended indefinitely” by WWE.

The suspension announcement was made by Michael Cole during last Friday’s episode of SmackDown. McAfee appeared to look confused while Cole was speaking, which drew attention on social media.

McAfee explained on his radio show that he was fascinated because it was the first time he was hearing the announcement. McAfee said he doesn’t know what to think about the situation with Banks and Naomi.

“The Sasha and Naomi thing, that was my first time hearing what Cole was saying live there. I have no idea what to think there. I have no clue. This is very fascinating. [Banks is] a superstar. They were our champions. I honestly have no idea what to believe in this whole thing. They keep me out of the loop with everything. I have no f*cking idea. While Cole was doing his thing, I was very fascinated,” McAfee said.

“I wish I had more answers for people. A couple of people asked me during my Chat with Pat on Saturday, ‘What’s going on?’ It’s like, ‘F*ck, I feel like you know more than I do.’ Literally, as that was happening, I’m like, ‘Oh, goddamn, suspended indefinitely.’ We need it [a resolution].”

Along with the suspension, WWE announced that the Women’s Tag Team titles have been vacated. A tournament will be held in the future to crown the new champions.

The suspension announcement came four days after Banks and Naomi walked out of last Monday’s Raw due to taking issue with the planned creative direction. Neither Banks nor Naomi have commented publicly on the situation.

WWE’s Pat McAfee in talks with Amazon for Thursday Night Football role

WWE commentator Pat McAfee is reportedly in talks with Amazon for a role on Thursday Night Football.

The New York Post reported on Wednesday that McAfee and Amazon “have been in discussions about the former NFL punter contributing to their Thursday Night Football coverage.” Amazon is now the exclusive home of Thursday Night Football starting with the 2022 NFL season.

The role that McAfee is in talks for hasn’t been disclosed. The New York Post reported that there have also been conversations about McAfee’s talk show (The Pat McAfee Show) potentially airing on Amazon Prime Video.

“There have also been conversations about potentially airing ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ — his weekday talk show, sponsored by FanDuel, which airs on YouTube and SiriusXM — on Prime Video,” the New York Post wrote.

The New York Post added that a source told them that nothing has been finalized.

Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit have been hired to do commentary for Thursday Night Football on Amazon.

McAfee is a color commentator for WWE Friday Night SmackDown, calling the show alongside Michael Cole. At WrestleMania 38 night two earlier this month, McAfee stepped into the ring for two matches. He defeated Austin Theory but then lost to Vince McMahon. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin appeared after McAfee vs. McMahon and dished out stunners to Theory, McMahon, and McAfee.

McAfee also wrestled for NXT twice in 2020.

It’s a brand new episode of We’re Live, Pal. Andrew Zarian and I take a look at the RAW after WrestleMania and wonder if it’s dead as a hot show.

We debate Cody’s promo on the show. Was it a great, organic promo, or was it too much of a rehearsed performance? We also wonder what the deal is with Edge and Damian Priest.

We go over the highs and lows of WrestleMania 38, including seeing Austin vs. McMahon for possibly the final time.

Pat McAfee says WWE WrestleMania 38 was ‘a dream come true’

At the start of his radio show on Monday, Pat McAfee commented on his experience at WrestleMania 38.

The SmackDown commentator made his WWE main roster in-ring debut by defeating Vince McMahon’s protege Austin Theory at WrestleMania 38 night two on Sunday. But that wasn’t McAfee’s only match of the night. After McAfee vs. Theory, McMahon stepped into the ring to face McAfee in an impromptu match.

McAfee lost to McMahon due to interference by Theory, including Theory giving McAfee a low blow. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin then appeared and dished out stunners to Theory and McMahon. Austin and McAfee shared beers together until Austin also stunned him too.

“Last night was a dream come true. Last night I had the time of my life. Last night — I should have been undefeated at WrestleMania and then I got, you know, set up. I got bamboozled. There’s no way that was a sanctioned match. So, I’m still undefeated at WrestleMania,” McAfee said on The Pat McAfee Show.

McAfee said he can’t thank everyone enough for the love they sent him after his matches.

“Absolutely thankful for everybody and everything. Austin Theory, you know, he’s a good kid. He’s on his way. I was very fortunate to be in there. And there was some cool stuff that took place at WrestleMania. And shout out to everybody on the internet that gave me a lot of love last night. I can’t thank you enough,” McAfee said.

“Last night was a f*cking dream and you all are the best.”

McAfee thanked WWE for getting “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes as his entrance music. McAfee said making his pro wrestling entrance is something he’s thought about in his mind 10 million times.

McAfee also said that he had no idea that the stunner from Austin was happening.

Prior to WrestleMania 38, McAfee had wrestled twice for WWE. Both of those matches were for NXT in 2020.

McAfee, who is a former NFL All-Pro punter, won Rookie of the Year in the 2020 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards.

McAfee has been part of the SmackDown commentary team since April 2021.

Vince McMahon returns to the ring at WWE WrestleMania 38, Steve Austin appears

Vince McMahon wrestled for the first time in 12 years at WrestleMania 38.

McMahon defeated Pat McAfee in an impromptu match on Sunday’s show. McAfee had just defeated Austin Theory when he challenged the 76-year-old to a match as well. McMahon accepted and a referee joined them in the ring.

Theory attacked McAfee from behind before the bell. With his opponent already weakened, McMahon gave him a few clotheslines and punted a football into his ribs before pinning him.

McMahon and Theory were celebrating in the ring when “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s music hit. Austin delivered a stunner to Theory before turning his attention to Vince. The two toasted beers together but Austin would eventually give McMahon a stunner too.

Austin then invited McAfee to join him in the ring. The two of them toasted beers together as Austin’s music played. Finally, Austin gave McAfee a stunner as well before the segment came to a close.

This was Vince McMahon’s first match since being defeated by Bret Hart at WrestleMania 26.

Ricochet defeated Sami Zayn last night to win the Intercontinental title. After a distraction by Johnny Knoxville, Ricochet hit a hurricanrana and pinned Zayn to become the new Intercontinental Champion.

Zayn then issued a challenge for the “Jackass” star to face him at WrestleMania 38. Knoxville responded later in the show and accepted the challenge.

Pat McAfee vs. Austin Theory was also made official for WrestleMania 38. Following McAfee’s interview with Vince McMahon on the Pat McAfee Show, Theory confronted McAfee on SmackDown.

Ronda Rousey made her SmackDown in-ring debut last night, defeating Sonya Deville in the main event of the episode. Rousey then put Charlotte Flair in an ankle lock after the match and made her visually tap out ahead of their SmackDown Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania.
