WWE NXT live results: Three title matches

Three title matches are set for tonight’s “Championship Tuesday” edition of NXT.

New NXT Tag Team Champions will be crowned in a five-team gauntlet match tonight. Grayson Waller & Sanga, Legado del Fantasma’s Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde, The Creed Brothers, Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen, and Pretty Deadly will be the gauntlet match participants.

The NXT Tag Team titles were declared vacant following Nash Carter’s release from WWE last week. MSK had just won the titles by defeating Imperium and The Creed Brothers in a triple threat match at NXT Stand & Deliver.

Former NXT UK Tag Team Champions Pretty Deadly made their NXT 2.0 debut last week and were revealed as The Creed Brothers’ mystery attackers.

The NXT Women’s Championship and NXT North American Championship will also be on the line tonight. Mandy Rose defends her title against Dakota Kai, while Solo Sikoa challenges Cameron Grimes for the North American Championship.

Plus, we’ll see the fallout from last week’s show-closing angle where it was revealed that Joe Gacy and Harland had kidnapped Rick Steiner.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

A show billed as “Championship Tuesday” is kicking off with a title match. No entrances for this one. Just right into the ring introductions, with both the champion and the challenger facing off in the squared circle.

NXT North American Champion Cameron Grimes defeats Solo Sikoa to retain his title

Grimes pins Sikoa after outside interference. Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes get involved during the finish, and they jump Grimes after the match.

They were going along just fine when Grimes out of nowhere stopped to talk trash. Grimes tells Sikoa he respects him. Sikoa’s “bloodline can kiss my grits,” Grimes says as he points to his rear end.

In a stereotypical spot, Grimes twice tries to ram Sikoa’s head into a turnbuckle. Sikoa no sells it, and he in turns rams Grimes’ head into the buckles.

Sikoa is soon cut off when the fight spills outside. That leads into Grimes doing a somersault senton off the apron. The show then transitions into a split screen commercial break.

After the show returns from the break, the champ is in control. He signals for his finisher, but Sikoa counters Grimes. Sikoa then hulks up. Umaga splash by Sikoa into a corner nets Sikoa a near fall.

Grimes misses on an attempted missile dropkick, but he lands on his feet. Grimes then executes a running Spanish Fly for a two count. The trading of near falls continues as Sikoa explodes with a Samoan Drop.

Trick Williams runs down to ringside and interferes. He trips up Sikoa, but Sikoa boots Williams. Sikoa follows up with a Superfly splash off the apron on Williams.

The interference distracts Sikoa. Grimes is able to capitalize on the distraction, and he hits Sikoa with a Cave In. Grimes then covers Sikoa for a three count.

Carmelo Hayes runs in after the match to ambush Grimes. Sikoa makes a save, but Williams takes out Sikoa with a chop block. The two heels jump Grimes, and they beat him down. Williams hold Grimes so Hayes can execute a springboard crossbody. Hayes grabs the title belt, and he poses with it while standing over a prone Grimes.

The focus of the show shifts immediately to the tag team title picture. Commentators Vic Jospeh and Wade Barrett begin to break down the gauntlet match taking place to determine the new tag champs.

The NXT Tag Team Championship was recently vacated after the firing of Nash Carter. That was never explained on this show, nor was MSK ever mentioned in any way. The announcers begin to explain the gauntlet tag match that takes place later tonight.

Grayson Waller interrupts the announcers from backstage. Waller is flanked by Sanga. Waller claims the titles should have been handed to them. Waller says Sanga is angry, and he will easily win the titles. Waller still has his arm in sling for what that is worth.

Malcolm Bivens and The Creed Brothers cut a promo on Pretty Deadly and the rest of the tag team field. The Creeds are also shown drawing a number out of a tumbler for the order in the gauntlet, very similarly to skits WWE used in the early ’90s for the Royal Rumble. Turns out they drew number one.

Joe Gacy plays with fire

NXT Champion Bron Breakker marches to the ring for a monologue. Joe Gacy wanted his attention. Well, Breakker says he sure has it now. Breakker says his father, Rick Steiner, is back at home safe and sound.

We are apparently just moving on from the kidnapping last week with little explanation, but Breakker does say Gacy has “some nerve pulling that crap last week.” Breakker cautions that no one messes with his family. Breakker then calls out Gacy, daring him to come get in the ring.

Gacy appears on the Titantron. He is outdoors near a fire. Gacy says he set Rick Steiner free, but Rick left behind  his WWE Hall of Fame ring. Gacy then tosses the ring into the fire. That is dumb. No way that fire is hot enough to melt a ring. It itself is not flammable. Why would you do that?

McKenzie Mitchell is backstage interviewing the trio known as Toxic Attraction. NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose and the NXT Tag Team Champions, Gigi Diolan & Jacy Jayne, cut promos. Rose vows to retain tonight.

Jaket Time is backstage getting ready for a match. Kushida is set to face Von Wagner, who attacks Kushida as he is warming up. Wagner pummels Kushida and Ikemen Jiro. Wagner then powerbombs Kushida out of sight. Robert Stone walks up, and he remarks there will be no match tonight.

After a commercial break, Stone and Wagner are in the ring. Stone has a mic, and he is cutting a promo. Jiro stumbles out, selling his ribs from the earlier attack. Jiro is still ready to fight.

Jiro is taking Kushida’s place in the match. He grabs the mic and publicly threatens Wagner. I don’t like Jiro’s chances.

Von Wagner (with Robert Stone) defeats Ikemen Jiro

Jiro shows a ton a fire, Wagner quickly cuts him off. David against Goliath, and David (or Jiro in this case) makes a valiant comeback. Jiro with superkicks knocks Wagner off his feet. However, David does not win this time. Goliath soon rises.

Jiro is still on a roll, and he nails a Swanton bomb for a near fall. Wagner cuts him off again, booting him in the face. Wagner then uses his DVD finisher, and Wagner covers Jiro for a three count.

Stone after the match is trying to order Wagner around. Wagner instead takes cues from a women in the crowd. She orders him to further punish Jiro. Looks like Wagner is getting a new manager. Move over Robert Stone.

Wagner presses Jiro his head. Like the spots with Bam Bam Bigelow and Spike Dudley in ECW from the late ’90s, Wagner tosses Jiro into the crowd. Unlike in ECW, the crowd that caught Jiro were plants. Presumably they were trainees.

Lash Legend attacks Nikkita Lyons in a backstage skit. Lyons was doing a sit-down interview when Legend rushes onto the set, and Legend ambushes Lyons. Legends gets her heat back after losing to Lyons in a match last week. Looks like they might run it back. Big pop from me for a Norman Smiley cameo during this skit.

NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose (with Toxic Attraction) defeats Dakota Kai to retain her title

Rose pins Kai after a distraction by Jacy Jayne & Gigi Dolan. Wendy Choo in an angle after the match sprays Toxic Attraction with water guns.

Opening a bout with an extended collar and elbow spot has definitely made a comeback in wrestling matches, as they also did it here at the start.

Kai does a dive off the top on Jayne & Dolan at ringside. The show then cuts to a commercial break with the challenger in control.

Kai was on a roll as the show returns from the break, but Kai is soon cut off.
The pace snarls, and the match begins to drag with Rose working over Kai.

Comeback by Kai. Awkward leg sweep spot, and Kai gets a two count. They go on to trade more near falls. Another awkward spot with one of Kai’s signature moves, where she does a modified Code Red.

The tag champs at ringside cause a distraction. Dolan distracts the referee, and Jayne jumps on the apron. Kai boots Jayne off the apron, but Kai loses her focus. Rose rushes in to hit Kai with a running knee. Rose then covers Kai for a pinfall.

Wendy Choo appears after the match. She is armed with two Super Soaker water guns. She sprays water on Toxic Attraction, and they sell it big like they were being hosed down by water cannons. They flop around like fish. Silly fun.

Joe Gacy is in another vignette, and his focus is on becoming the NXT Champion. Please no. Heaven help us. Gacy goes on to babble for a bit, until he uses tongs to pull the HOF ring out of the fire. He then puts the hot ring on his finger, burning himself in the process. That was even more dumb than putting the ring in a fire.

Tony D’Angelo meets with Santos Escobar and Legado del Fantasma. D’Angelo is trying to smooth things other between them. D’Angelo gives Escobar an overstuffed envelope, presumably containing a load of cash. Escobar gives back the envelope, telling D’Angelo that respect for the family means more. Escobar leaves while shaking his head.

Natalya returns to NXT and attacks Cora Jade

Cora Jade in an in-ring promo talks about WrestleMania weekend being the most important week of her life. Jade says her parents watched her match from ringside. Jade admits she came up short in the match. Memories and such were still made.

Jade thought she wanted to become champion, but now she knows she needs to win the championship. Jade says this is not just another promo. She means what she says.

Jade keeps talking about her desire to hold the title when Natalya’s theme song suddenly blares over the speakers. Natalya interrupts the monologue, and Natalya gets into the ring with Jade.

Usually an interruption during a promo means beef, but this was apparently somehow different. Jade was happy for the interruption. Nattie is one of her heroes and idols in WWE.

The live audience pops huge for Nattie. They chant “holy shit” for the moment, and they chant Nattie’s name. Nattie fights back tears.

Love fest at first. Jade acts like a fangirl. She marks out for Nattie. Jade begins to tell Nattie about a message sent years ago. Nattie says she finally saw the message, and Nattie puts her over.

Nattie begins to cry when telling Jade she is the future of the women’s division. Nattie’s face turns, as she snarls at Jade.

“But the future is bleak,” Natalya says, before slapping Jade hard in the face. Jade is dumbstruck at the betrayal. Nattie is not done yet.

Nattie puts Jade in a sharpshooter. Jade frantically slaps the mat in pain as Nattie cinches down on the hold.

A vignette hypes the arrival to NXT 2.0 of Nathan Frazer from NXT UK.

Xyon Quinn defeats Draco Anthony

Quin pins Anthony to handily win this grudge match. Anthony mocks Quinn during the match, and Quinn hulks up in anger. That leads right into the finish, where Quinn clobbers Anthony with a Tito Santana flying forearm.

Backstage, Tatum Paxley challenges Natalya to a match. Natalya addresses the NXT women’s roster with many of them gathered around her. Nattie puts them all “on notice” that she is now in NXT. Paxley against Natalya was later made official for next week.

Also announced for next week is Sarray vs. Tiffany Stratton.

Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince & Kit Wilson) win the NXT Tag Team Championship in a gauntlet match

Pretty Deadly in their in-ring debut on NXT 2.0 win the vacate tag titles.

Four separate bouts within this gauntlet. The Creeds almost run the gauntlet, wrestling in all four stages. Yet they run out of gas, and Pretty Deadly capture the tag titles.

The Creed Brothers (Julius & Brutus Creed with Malcolm Bivens) eliminate Legado del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde with Elektra Lopez)

Great stuff in this first match-up of the gauntlet. They kept a relative quick pace. Brutus pins Wilde for the elimination, ending what was arguably the best bout within the gauntlet.

Fallon Henley gets into a skirmish with Elektra Lopez, as Henley seconds the next team in the gauntlet.

The Creed Brothers eliminate Brooks Jensen & Josh Briggs (with Fallon Henley)

This second bout within the gauntlet begins with a wild brawl. The show cuts to commercial during the bedlam. The match is joined in progress when the show returns from commercial.

Briggs & Jensen with a double team powerbomb put Brutus Creed through the announce desk. Briggs & Jensen then gang up on Julius Creed.

They work over Julius, yet Brutus is able to make a save when breaking up a pinning attempt.

Briggs & Jensen worked well together doing tandem moves, but that also cost them in the end. Julius trips them up, allowing Brutus to counter a lariat with a clothesline of his own. Brutus then scores the pinfall for an elimination.

The Creed Brothers eliminate Grayson Waller & Sanga

Waller still has his arm in a sling, but it is a ruse like Cowboy Bob Orton. Waller ditches the sling whenever Sanga is clearly dominating the Creeds. Sanga took the fall in the match, despite being portrayed as a monster.

When the Creeds finally took Sanga off his feet, it at least is a tipping point in the match. Julius with a sliding lariat on Sanga, just before pinning Sanga for the elimination.

Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince & Kit Wilson) run in to jump the Creeds right after the bell rings.

Pretty Deadly eliminate The Creed Brothers to win the championship gauntlet match

The exhausted Creeds fight valiantly, but they are out of gas. Double team by Pretty Deadly as they execute their Spilt Milk finisher. Prince then covers Brutus, and Pretty Deadly win the titles.

The look on Malcolm Bivens face says it all. Utter disbelief. Did that just happen? You have got to be kidding me.

WALTER vs. Kushida announced for next week’s NXT

A first-time matchup will be taking place on next week’s episode of NXT.

WWE has announced that WALTER will face Kushida on NXT next Wednesday (October 9). It wasn’t indicated that WALTER’s WWE United Kingdom Championship will be on the line.

On NXT’s live premiere two weeks ago, there was an angle where WALTER’s Imperium stablemates (Marcel Barthel, Fabian Aichner & Alexander Wolfe) attacked Denzel Dejournette before he was supposed to face Kushida. Kushida then interrupted a promo by WALTER, avoided Imperium’s attacks, and hit a kick on WALTER.

Kushida teamed with Breezango and defeated Barthel, Aichner & Wolfe on NXT last week. WALTER appeared and laid out Kushida on the stage after the match.

Next Wednesday will be the second week of the NXT vs. AEW “Wednesday Night War.” Drew Gulak defending his Cruiserweight Championship against Lio Rush has also been announced for next week’s NXT.

Rush was set up as Gulak’s next challenger by defeating Oney Lorcan in a number one contender’s match on NXT two weeks ago.

Tommaso Ciampa returns, sets sights on NXT title

Nearly seven months after having neck surgery, Tommaso Ciampa returned on tonight’s NXT.

The episode ended with Ciampa confronting NXT Champion Adam Cole on the stage. Ciampa looked at Cole’s title and went face-to-face with him as the show went off the air.

Ciampa was forced to relinquish the NXT Championship after undergoing anterior cervical fusion surgery this March. Johnny Gargano defeated Cole to win the vacant title at NXT TakeOver: New York in April, but Cole then won the title from Gargano at June’s TakeOver XXV.

Ciampa had recently been teasing a return, including tweeting a hype video at Cole earlier today.

Cole retained the NXT Championship against Matt Riddle earlier on tonight’s NXT episode. After the match, he was confronted by the returning Finn Balor. Balor declared that: “As of now, Finn Balor is NXT.”

Cole’s Undisputed Era stablemates Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish retained their NXT Tag Team titles against The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) in the main event of tonight’s show. O’Reilly, Fish & Roderick Strong were celebrating in the ring and Cole was celebrating on the stage when Ciampa appeared.

Finn Balor returns to NXT, confronts Adam Cole

Finn Balor is back in NXT.

After Adam Cole retained the NXT Championship against Matt Riddle on tonight’s NXT episode, Balor came out to the ring and confronted Cole in a post-match angle. Balor got on the microphone and declared: “As of now, Finn Balor is NXT.” Balor and Cole then exchanged words.

Balor first made his NXT debut in 2014 and was on the brand until being called up to the main roster in the 2016 WWE Draft. He held the NXT Championship from July 2015 to April 2016.

This was Balor’s first appearance on WWE television since taking a hiatus after SummerSlam. He lost to The Fiend at that pay-per-view.

WWE Shop has already released a new NXT T-shirt for Balor.

Cole vs. Riddle kicked off tonight’s NXT and there were no commercial breaks during the match. Cole had a cast on his right hand and hit Riddle with it near the end of the match. Cole then hit the Last Shot to retain the NXT Championship.

Cole has held the NXT title since winning it from Johnny Gargano at TakeOver XXV this June.

Adam Cole vs. Matt Riddle title match to open tonight’s NXT

With the “Wednesday Night War” beginning tonight, NXT is looking to start their episode off strong.

Adam Cole and Matt Riddle’s NXT Championship match will kick off tonight’s NXT. That announcement was made by Cathy Kelley on the premiere edition of WWE’s The Bump.

Riddle was set up as the number one contender to Cole’s title by defeating Killian Dain in a street fight last week.

Two other title matches are also set for tonight’s NXT. Shayna Baszler will defend her NXT Women’s Championship against Candice LeRae, and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) will challenge for Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish’s NXT Tag Team titles.

Johnny Gargano vs. Shane Thorne and an appearance by Velveteen Dream have been announced for tonight’s NXT as well. The episode will have “limited commercial interruption.”

Starting tonight, NXT will air live on the USA Network on Wednesdays for its full two hours. It will go head-to-head with AEW Dynamite starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time, with NXT also listed as having a 15-minute overrun tonight.

Cody Rhodes vs. Sammy Guevara will open tonight’s AEW Dynamite premiere on TNT.

WWE announces pre-show for Wednesday’s NXT episode

Ahead of a loaded up card, WWE will be airing an NXT pre-show next Wednesday (October 2).

It was announced today that Charly Caruso, Sam Roberts, and Pat McAfee will host a 30-minute pre-show prior to Wednesday’s NXT episode. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time and will air on the WWE Network, WWE.com, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

NXT will begin airing live on USA Network for its full two hours starting on Wednesday. It’s also the start of NXT going head-to-head with AEW Dynamite, with both shows airing from 8-10 p.m. Eastern.

Three title matches have been announced for Wednesday’s NXT episode. Adam Cole will defend his NXT Championship against Matt Riddle, Candice LeRae will challenge for Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship, and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) will get their rematch for Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish’s NXT Tag Team titles.

Johnny Gargano will also face Shane Thorne on Wednesday’s NXT. The episode will have “limited commercial interruption.”

Adam Cole vs. Matt Riddle NXT title match set for next week

WWE is loading up next Wednesday’s episode of NXT with another title match.

A third title match has been confirmed for the show, with NXT Champion Adam Cole set to defend his title against Matt Riddle. The match announcement was made after Riddle defeated Killian Dain in a number one contender’s street fight on this week’s NXT.

After the street fight, there was an angle where Cole came out to the ring and got in Riddle’s face. Cole told Riddle that he isn’t in Cole’s league and will never be NXT Champion. Riddle then put Cole in a Fujiwara armbar. Cole tapped out until his Undisputed Era stablemates came down and chased off Riddle.

The Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish will defend their NXT Tag Team titles against The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) next week. Candice LeRae will also challenge for Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship on the episode.

WWE has announce that next week’s NXT will have “limited commercial interruption.” It’s the first time that NXT will air live on USA Network for the full two hours. It’s also the first week that NXT is going head-to-head with AEW Dynamite.

Next week’s NXT episode to have ‘limited commercial interruption’

Update —

Adam Cole vs. Matt Riddle for the NXT Championship has been added to next week’s NXT. Johnny Gargano will also face Shane Thorne.

**********

Original —

Next week’s episode of NXT on USA Network will have “limited commercial interruption.”

The announcement was made during the USA Network hour of this week’s NXT. Next Wednesday will be the first time that NXT has aired live on USA for the full two hours.

Last week’s NXT and tonight’s show were split across USA Network and WWE Network due to the final two episodes of “Suits” airing at 9 p.m. Eastern time on USA.

Next week will also be the first time that NXT and AEW go head-to-head. AEW Dynamite debuts on TNT next Wednesday, with both shows airing from 8-10 p.m. Eastern.

Two title matches have been announced for next week’s NXT thus far. Candice LeRae will challenge for Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship, and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) will get their rematch for Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong’s NXT Tag Team titles.

LeRae was set up as Baszler’s next challenger by defeating Mia Yim, Bianca Belair, and Io Shirai in a fatal four-way number one contender’s match last week. O’Reilly & Fish defeated The Street Profits last month to win the NXT Tag Team titles.

NXT tops one million viewers for USA Network premiere

The much-hyped live debut of NXT on USA Network averaged 1.179 million viewers last night.

That’s almost 40 percent higher than when an NXT episode aired on USA during WWE Holiday Week in December 2017, although that was a taped show that aired out of prime time and was also simulcast on the WWE Network.

The first hour of last night’s show was exclusive to USA, with hour two airing on the WWE Network, which seemingly caused an issue with so many people trying to log on at the same time and led to an inability for some to access the service.

NXT did not finish inside the top 20 in terms of total cable TV viewers but did land fourth in the 18-49 demo with a 0.43 rating. The season premiere of American Horror Story did a monster 1.00 rating in the demo and 2.126 million viewers.

Suits, which immediately followed NXT on USA, averaged 955,000 viewers for its penultimate episode. Last week’s Suits did a virtually identical 965,000 viewers, so the strong NXT lead-in appears to have had no effect, but it does give an indication of what kind of numbers USA Network might be expecting from programming in that time slot.

Suits’ rating in the 18-49 demo last night was a 0.20.

NXT retained almost 60 percent of SmackDown’s viewers from Tuesday night.

NXT again has Wednesday night to themselves next week before AEW Dynamite debuts on TNT on Wednesday, October 2, which is the same week NXT moves to both hours airing live on USA.

Number one contender’s match set for NXT on USA next week

After their match on NXT’s live premiere ended without a finish, Matt Riddle and Killian Dain are set to face off again next week.

WWE has announced Riddle will face Dain in another street fight next Wednesday (September 25). It will also be a number one contender’s match, with the winner getting a future shot at Adam Cole’s NXT Championship.

The Riddle vs. Dain rematch was announced by William Regal after this week’s NXT went off the air. It will be part of the USA Network portion of next week’s broadcast.

Like this week, the first hour of next Wednesday’s NXT will air live on USA Network and the second hour will be live on WWE Network. It will then move to airing live on USA for the full two hours starting on October 2.

Riddle and Dain’s street fight headlined the second hour of this week’s show. It turned into a wild brawl with much of the roster getting involved.

Dominik Dijakovic vs. Keith Lee has also been announced for the USA Network hour of next week’s NXT, and Dakota Kai will return to action at some point on the show.

NXT Women’s title match announced for October 2

Candice LeRae is the new number one contender to the NXT Women’s Championship.

LeRae defeated Mia Yim, Bianca Belair, and Io Shirai in a fatal four-way number one contender’s match at the start of tonight’s NXT on USA Network premiere. It was later announced that LeRae will get her title shot against Shayna Baszler on the Wednesday, October 2 episode of NXT.

LeRae pinned Yim to win the number one contender’s match. Baszler, Marina Shafir, and Jessamyn Duke then came out to the stage, with Baszler and LeRae going face-to-face.

Baszler has been NXT Women’s Champion since defeating Kairi Sane at WWE’s Evolution pay-per-view in October 2018. This is Baszler’s second reign with the title.

October 2 is the first night that NXT is airing live on USA Network for the full two hours. Due to the final two episodes of the USA Network series “Suits,” the second hour of this and next week’s NXT episodes are airing on WWE Network.

AEW will also debut on TNT on October 2. It will go head-to-head with NXT.

Dominik Dijakovic vs. Keith Lee set for next week’s NXT on USA

Dominik Dijakovic and Keith Lee’s rivalry is coming to the USA Network.

During tonight’s live premiere of NXT on USA, it was announced that Dijakovic vs. Lee will take place next Wednesday (September 25). It will be part of the USA Network portion of next week’s NXT broadcast.

For tonight and next week’s episodes, the first hour of NXT is airing live on USA Network at 8 p.m. Eastern time and the second hour will be live on WWE Network at 9 p.m. Eastern. NXT will then begin airing live on USA for the full two hours on October 2.

Dijakovic defeated Lee when they faced off on the NXT episode that aired on August 28. They also went to a double countout in a match that aired on NXT TV this February.

Before signing with WWE, Dijakovic (as Donovan Dijak) and Lee had an acclaimed series of matches on the indies.

Dakota Kai returning to action is also set for next week’s NXT. She’s been out of action since tearing her ACL in December 2018.

WWE NXT live results: The USA Network era begins

A new era for NXT begins at Full Sail University tonight as the brand makes its live USA Network debut.

For the first two weeks, the first hour of NXT will air live on USA Network and the second hour will be live on WWE Network. Starting on October 2, the full two hours will be live on USA.

A North American Championship match will headline the USA Network portion of tonight’s broadcast, with Velveteen Dream putting his title on the line against Roderick Strong. Strong is the only member of the Undisputed Era who doesn’t currently hold a title.

The second hour will feature a street fight between Matt Riddle and Killian Dain.

A number one contender’s match is also set for tonight. Mia Yim, Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Candice LeRae will face off to determine NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler’s next challenger.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern.

*********

Ready or not here we go. Is this history in the making? Time will time. There’s a countdown clock on the screen during the closing scene of Law & Order (which was the lead-in on USA), so that’s seems important. I haven’t seen USA do that for other shows.

Triple H voices over an opening video package introducing a national televison audience to NXT. He was standing at Gorilla, and he pulled back the curtain to reveal he was live at Full Sail.

Mauro Ranallo welcomed viewers to the show, and the live era of NXT televison kicked off with the entrance of Io Shirai. NXT on USA began with a fatal four way match to determine the number one contender to the NXT Women’s Championship.

Candice LeRae defeated Mia Yim, Io Shirai and Bianca Belair to become the number one contender for the Women’s Championship

LeRae pinned Yim in a fast paced thriller. The champion confronted her after the match. This was a great way to open this new run on USA. Their match was unlike most women’s matches on the main roster in a good way. The PWG style has truly arrived on national television. They even beat AEW to it.

The match began with a melee. When the smoke cleared, Biance Belair was press slamming LeRae. Belair got to shine with a handspring into a standing moonsault press. Yim and Shirai got involved. Shirai cleaned house with a Tiger Feint Kick and then a missile dropkick. Yim struck with a tornado DDT.

LeRae was begining to run wild when Belair gave her a fallaway slam on the floor. That led into rapid fire highspots.

Yim went through the ropes with tope suicida. Shirai did a moonsault to the floor before a commercial. They returned from the break doing a Tower of Doom spot. Everybody was down before a cavalcade of spots that led to everybody down again.

Another frantic series of exchanges saw Belair go for her KOD finisher on LeRae. Yim cut her off for a Code Red and a near fall. Belair fired up with a double spear.

Belair executed KOD, but her cover was broken up. Yim caught her with Protect Ya Neck. Shirai was going for a moonsault when Yim shoved her off the turnbuckle.

LeRae was put in an electric chair by Yim, but she countered into a reverse rana. LeRae then springboarded into a quebrada and covered Yim for the pinfall.

LeRae is now the top contender. NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler strolled on stage to confront LeRae. Baszler was flanked by Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke, so LeRae was outnumbered. LeRae still showed no fear as she got face-to-face with Baszler. I already love this feud.

A vignette hyped Dominik Dijakovic — who will be in action next week on NXT. Another video package focused on hyping Matt Riddle vs. Killian Dain for the second hour on the WWE Network. Damian Priest also got his own vignette during a later commercial break.

Cameron Grimes defeated Sean Maluta

Grimes pinned Maluta after catching him with a double stomp seconds into the match. This was a complete squash, and really put Grimes over strong.

Roderick Strong defeated Velveteen Dream to win the NXT North American Championship

Strong pinned Dream after End of Heartache and outside interference from Undisputed Era. This was a really good match, but had a very WWE finish. Strong is such a workhorse in the ring.

The arena lights went dark and spotlights centered on the ring for the introduction. That was a nice touch. Spotlights aren’t used enough any more. Glad to see the spotlight making a comeback.

The match began with grappling. Strong was clotheslined outside the ring. He kicked the ring steps in frustration and paced around ringside before the show cut to commerical. Strong was bumping and feeding for Dream when the show returned from break. That included the Randy Savage ax handle off the top to the outside.

When Dream went back to the top rope, Strong shoved him to the floor. Strong dropped him back first on the barricade. Strong then sailed through the ropes with a wrecking ball dropkick. He went to work on Dream’s back.

Dream got a hope spot as he rolled through to reverse a chinlock into a pinning combination — but to no avail. Strong cut him off and went back to work targeting the back. Strong displayed to the audience why Mauro on commentary called him “The Messiah of the Backbreaker” as Strong went to work.

Dream fought back, and he tried reversing the Stronghold into an Sharpshooter. Strong countered that but came up empty on his second attempt at a wrecking ball. Dream shoved him into the ring steps before a commercial break.

Strong was setting up a superplex when the show returned from break. Dream fought him off to deliver a flying ax handle, and he got a near fall after a superkick. Dream got a few more close two counts, including one with a wicked swinging DDT.

They were fighting on the apron when Dream got rocked with a kick. The crowd chanted “this is wrestling” and they were not wrong. Strong tied up Dream’s arms in the ropes doing a heel spot I haven’t seen in quite some time. He pummeled a defenseless Dream, and then he applied the Stronghold. They built the drama until Dream finally got a rope break.

The rest of the Undisputed Era stable stormed to ringside to help Strong. Dream was running wild on a comeback when Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole caused a distraction. That allowed Strong to waylay Dream with a jumping knee strike. Strong dropped Dream into End of Heartache for a tremendous false finish. The crowd was electric at this point.

Dream executed a Dream Valley Driver and climbed the turnbuckles. Cole interfered to superkick Dream, and Dream tumbled into the ring. Strong delivered another End of Heartache, and he covered Dream for the pinfall to win the title.

That was one helluva first hour. Now the show shifts from USA to WWE Network in the second hour.

Pete Dunne defeated Arturo Ruas

Dunne submitted Ruas with a finger break spot. This was a cool blend of styles. Dunne early on went for joint manipulation as he targeted Ruas’ hand. Ruas would counter and fire up on Dunne with his Capoeira attacks.

Dunne trapped Ruas’ leg on an attempted kick, and Dunne grabbed his toes trying to break them. Dunne then got a near fall after a series of kicks. Dunne dropped Ruas into a release suplex. He stomped on Ruas and went for a triangle.

Ruas escaped the triangle and gave Dunne a German suplex. Ruas was on the offensive when Dunne cut him off.

Dunne again went for a triangle, and Ruas tried to counter. Dunne transitioned into the finger break and Ruas tapped out.

Xia Li defeated Aliyah

Li pinned Aliyah after a windmill kick in a short match. This was a showcase for Li. Aliyah took most of the quick match — until Li made a comeback. She hit a spinning back kick and then delivered the windmill for the pinfall.

Denzel Dejournette came out for his entrance ahead of his scheduled match with Kushida. Suddenly the Imperium faction from NXT UK surrounded the ring. The ganged up on Dejournette and administered a beatdown. The crowd chanted for Walter as his henchmen — Marcel Barthel, Fabian Aichner and Alexander Wolfe — stomped mudholes.

And then he arrived…Walter entered Full Sail with his NXT UK Championship draped over his shoulder.

Walter cut a calm but threatening promo. Kushida interrupted him to say this was his time, and he challenged Walter to a match. Imperium henchmen tried to rush Kushida, but he fought them off. Walter then snatched up Kushida and seemingly looked to squash him. Kushida escaped his clutches, landed a kick, and fled to safety.

The Imperium stable glared at him as Kushida lived to fight another day. Walter vs. Kushida looks to be a direction in the near future. OMFG, that can only be awesome.

Lio Rush defeated Oney Lorcan to become number one contender for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship

Rush pinned Lorcan with a frogsplash to end a great match. They really played up Rush being on the comeback trail trying to redeem himself.

Mauro on commentary said Rush had “more issues than a magazine” but he is getting better. Mauro as a mental healt advocate also credited Rush for not staying silent about his struggles.

Loran rushed in to attack Rush at the bell. Lorcan with a blockbuster got an early near fall seconds into the match.

Rush soon fired up with a tope suicida trifecta. Rush kept his fire and kept up the pace as he flew around. However, Lorcan soon cut him off and struck him down. Rush teased getting counted out.

Lorcan with a dealift gutwrench into a powerbomb netted him a two count. Moments later Lorcan locked in a Lance Storm half crab. Rush fought free only to get chopped down. Lorcan then gave him a scoop slam that actually made a believable near fall.

Just as I was wondering what year it was after that scoop slam spot, Rush springboarded into a cutter. It is still 2019. Rush then missed a frogsplash and sold his knee. Lorcan powerbombed him and again applied the half crab.

Rush escaped the crab, but Lorcan locked it in once again. He then transitioned into a modified STF. Rush struggled to escape, and he was eventually able to get a foot on the ropes to break the hold.

Rush fired up as they traded chops. Lorcan charged towards Rush only to take a running Spanish Fly. Rush then leapt off the top rope with a frogsplash for the pinfall.

Matt Riddle vs. Killian Dain in street fight end in a no-contest

The match had no finish as the show ended with a gigantic brawl like this was an old school ECW show. Dain ambushed Riddle at the bell, but Riddle threw him around him with a couple suplexes. Dain blocked a bro-ton, and the fight spilled outside. They hit each other with a kendo stick.

They fought into the crowd and out of the building. As they were fighting by a production truck, Walter appeared out of the darkness.

Walter attcked Riddle, and the Street Profits made the save. The Forgotten Sons joined the fray at some point. Everybody fought back inside the building, and they brawled their way to the ring.

The scene turned into a Gordon Solie Pier Sixer with chaos everywhere. Officials poured out for a huge pull-apart. Dain closed the show with a tope suicida. Everybody was down selling as the show ended.

NXT on USA media call: HHH on creative team, future of TakeOver

Prior to NXT launching their weekly show on USA Network Wednesday, WWE COO Paul “Triple H” Levesque talked to the media Monday afternoon on a variety of topics from the future of TakeOver to potential shifts in NXT creative to talent exchanges.

You can hear the entire call by clicking below:

  • When asked about ratings, he said he is more interested in the long haul ratings-wise vs. hotshotting for the first few weeks of shows.
  • He said there’s no plan to expand the length of TakeOvers and want to simply make them good.
  • He said there will be some schedule changes in 2020 focused on giving Network subscribers more live content. More one-off shows like the TakeOver 25 event in Bridgeport, CT, and Worlds Collide coming up during Royal Rumble weekend are in the plans.
  • Levesque was asked about the NXT creative process and if it will change with the USA move. He said the core team remains intact, but their communication team will expand with new partners being involved. “The team is the team,” he said.
