JNPO: ‘Nitro’ author Guy Evans on his WCW passion project

There has been no shortage of discussion over the years on the rise and fall of WCW, including this effort by our own Bryan Alvarez and R.D. Reynolds, but there has never been a deep dive quite like ‘Nitro: The Incredible Rise and Inevitable Collapse of Ted Turner’s WCW‘, the first book by author Guy Evans.

On a new Josh Nason’s Punch-Out, hear my conversation with Evans and learn more about the book. If you’ve read the book or are thinking about it, I think you’ll like this show quite a bit. And…it’s spoiler-free. (Yes, there are some cool new things that you’ll learn in the book!)

On the topic board:

  • Evans’ background and why he picked this specific topic to write his first book on
  • How he got access to 120+ Turner employees
  • What he learned in his extensive talks with Eric Bischoff
  • Who he wanted to talk to and couldn’t
  • Some of his key takeaways from the project

This is one of the best wrestling books I have ever read, and is perfect for those of you who are into the business of wrestling and TV. Click below to listen now.

Also, check out my interviews with fellow authors Jonathan Snowden (Shamrock, Total MMA, etc), and Lee Daly (Before A Fall on PRIDE Fighting Championships).

April 30, 2001 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Death of Johnny Valentine, WCW Nitro delayed

If you ask most wrestlers from the 50s through the 70s to do word association, and give the term, “physical toughness,” probably the name that would be mentioned most often, would be Johnny Valentine.

Valentine, who likely went more places and held more regional titles at a time when they really meant being the top man in a territory that did real business, than any wrestler of his era, passed away at the age of 72 at about 3 a.m. on 4/24, the same day as Lou Thesz’ 85th birthday, in Dallas. He’d been suffering numerous physical problems with his back and his heart which dated back, some of which dated back to the 70s, over the past year, which had gone heavily publicized.

Valentine was known in the 70s as the greatest wrestler never to hold the NWA world heavyweight title. He’s largely credited with driving a rebirth of the Mid Atlantic territory in the early 70s which eventually spawned wrestlers like Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat, who were to take the business to new heights as far as in-ring quality was concerned.

April 2, 2001 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Final episode of WCW Monday Nitro

The purchase of World Championship Wrestling by WWF Entertainment this past week combined with the ending of all wrestling programming on the Turner networks changes the entire landscape of the pro wrestling industry forever.

The final episode of Nitro, at least on TNT, the show which forever changed television wrestling from the squash match/interview format to the idea of weekly blow-out almost PPV-like shows, started with the almost surreal image of Vince McMahon addressing the audience after purchasing the show. Perhaps even more telling, and the final moment of 29 years of wrestling on the Turner networks was a music video promoting the Steve Austin vs. Rock match at Wrestlemania. It was an amazing climax to the story, which ended a few days earlier, of wrestling on stations that had been the centerpiece of the opposition to McMahon for the past 16 years.

In between was the big television angle, simulcast on both Raw and Nitro, with Vince in Cleveland for Raw and son Shane in Panama City for Nitro.

February 19, 2001 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Yearly business breakdown, WCW shutdown nixed, more

The XFL went from television’s penthouse to its outhouse in record time as ratings plummeted on NBC to the point the entire league is already being labeled, just two weeks in, a major failure in most circles.

It got so bad, that on 2/12, just eight days after the initial ratings for opening night came in at well above the levels even the most optimistic in NBC expected, that emergency meetings were held after an embarrassing show with a tremendous finish went 45 minutes long due to an alleged generator problem, an injury, and a double overtime.

The prime time rating fell from a 9.49 to a 4.4 on NBC (I believe with the 45 minutes past prime time that actually did better with the close game in double overtime, the final NBC number was a 4.6), going from first place to last place in the prime time race over the course of one week.

December 7, 1998 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Brian Hildebrand tribute show, WCW contracts ending

Pro wrestling is a world filled with a lot of negativity, from the deception, these days often more prevalent behind the scenes than in front, the backstabbing and the jealousy. But on 11/29 in Knoxville, World Championship Wrestling put it all behind to honor someone to whom most fans would see as a very insignificant part of the profession. By the response of his peers, it was made evident he was anything but.

WCW’s unannounced ceremonies for referee Brian Hildebrand, 36, a lifelong wrestling fan who became one of the most universally well-liked people in the profession, facing the toughest fight of his life in his second battle with stomach cancer, reeked of genuine emotion. To paraphrase what Ric Flair said in what may be someday an immortal line, it wasn’t a great wrestling show, it was real. Just like Hildebrand was and is a credit to his profession, what WCW did was very much a credit to the profession as well. The highlight was no doubt when Flair came out, as a surprise guest at the house show, and presented Hildebrand with a replica of the WCW world heavyweight championship belt and said that Hildebrand, not Ric Flair or Hulk Hogan, was really “The Man.”

The show was headlined by a match made partially because it was the match Hildebrand himself wanted to see, Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero & Chris Jericho. Even though it was a house show, which these days to many wrestlers means avoid more than a few bumps if at all possible, the four men worked as hard if not harder than if it was a PPV match more for the audience of one than the other 4,344 fans in the building. The finish saw a referee bump, which led to Hildebrand jumping out of his ringside chair and calling for the bell as Benoit had Jericho in the crossface. At that point Hildebrand took off his shirt and was wearing a Four Horseman t-shirt underneath it.
