Mike Bennett set for action on next week’s ROH TV

Mike Bennett is set for his first in-ring action since returning to Ring of Honor.

ROH has announced that Bennett vs. Vincent Marseglia will air on next week’s episode of Ring of Honor Wrestling. The episode will begin airing on local affiliates this coming weekend.

Bennett returned on last week’s edition of ROH television, reuniting with Matt Taven and saving him from an attack by Marseglia and Bateman. Bennett and Taven were formerly stablemates in The Kingdom and had held the ROH and IWGP Tag Team titles. After Bennett left ROH, Taven introduced a new version of The Kingdom in 2016 with Marseglia and TK O’Ryan as part of the group. Marseglia turned against Taven in November 2019.

In a post-show interview after last week’s ROH TV, Bennett was asked if he was in ROH to stay. Bennett responded by saying that he never should have left ROH.

Bennett was released by WWE during their roster cuts this April.

Tracy Williams vs. the returning John Walters in a Pure Rules match has also been announced for next week’s episode of ROH TV.

ROH TV results: Mike Bennett returns

Quinn McKay opened the show, running down the card for us tonight.

Jay Briscoe cut a promo on EC3. Briscoe said that he had been derailed from his purpose of winning the tag team titles, and had to take on EC3. EC3 said he was looking to find out if honour is real, and he wanted to see if Briscoe would live up to the ROH name and if he had what it took to show him if honour is real.

EC3 defeated Jay Briscoe via DQ

EC3 kept offering to shake hands with Briscoe, but he wouldn’t meet Briscoe’s eyes. After a brief exchange, EC3 connected with an elbow and offered to shake the hand again, as the announcers speculated that EC3 has lost his mind, as he refused to look directly at Briscoe. Jay refused the handshake and attacked. Briscoe choked EC3 in the corner and didn’t stop at the 5 count, so the referee disqualified him.

Briscoe continued to attack and claw at EC3 as EC3 begged Briscoe to hit him, yelling “Control your narrative!”. He offered himself for a Jay Driller, but security broke it up.

Quinn McKay asked why Jay Briscoe, of all people, wouldn’t uphold the Code of Honor when against EC3. Briscoe said “Because f*** him.” A simple enough reason, I suppose.

A video aired for LSG telling us how he became a fan of ROH, and how seeing Jay Lethal live is why he became a wrestler. He said after years of work, and a bad 2019 with his tag team Coast 2 Coast he’s now in the position Lethal was years ago – no longer a young boy. He’s ready to step it up.

LSG said he was training harder than ever during the break from the pandemic, and that this match with Lethal meant everything to him because he wanted to prove he could hang with Lethal, saying “The boy who wanted to be you is now going to beat you!”

Jay Lethal cut a promo about how the Pure title tournament didn’t quite go as he planned, losing to Tracy Williams. He had no problem that Williams was the better man that night, and that his goal is rebuilding ROH and bringing structure to it. He wanted to have this match with LSG because LSG was in the same position he was with Samoa Joe years ago.

These video packages were phenomenal. I understood the motivation and character of both right away, with Lethal being the experienced veteran and LSG looking to Lethal as a mentor that he needed to overcome.

Jay Lethal defeated LSG in a Pure Rules Match via split decision

This was contested under Pure Match rules, meaning it went for 15 minutes and each wrestler would get 3 rope breaks the entire match. LSG watched Lethal for years, so he was able to counter a lot of Lethal’s offence staying with him throughout the match. Lethal went for a figure four, but LSG used his first rope break. LSG stayed with Lethal as the match went on, with Lethal being one step ahead for most of the match.

Lethal went to the top rope, but LSG read him and knocked Lethal to the floor before hitting a dropkick to the floorl. LSG targeted the neck from that point forward. Lethal finally hit his cartwheel dropkick and dropkicked LSG to the floor before hitting a suicide dive. Lethal went for a Lethal Injection, but LSG caught him and hit the Rock-a-By-Baby Suplex and locked in the Muta Lock, pulling Lethal’s arm across his face.

Lethal managed to reach the ropes just as the time limit expired. It went to the judges decision, where they awarded Lethal the victory via split decision. They shook hands after the match, with LSG making it clear that he thought he could have beaten Lethal with more time. Lethal smiled and looked like he was embracing the challenge.

Matt Taven defeated Bateman

This match marked Taven’s official return to the ring after his injury that left him out for almost a year. In storyline, Bateman and Vincent took out Taven, and he wants revenge en route to Final Battle, when he faces Vincent.

Taven took it to Bateman quite aggressively in this match. Taven hit a suplex early, so he went for one again later, but Bateman countered into a Twist and Shout. Taven countered an Irish whip with a complete shot then locked on the Trend Setter, but Bateman made the ropes.

Taven hit a dive over the top rope and nailed Bateman, but immediately began selling his knee. Taven then missed a frog splash, but succeeded in rolling Bateman up for a pinfall. Bateman attacked Taven after the match and hit a tombstone in Vincent’s direction.

Vincent cut a promo about how Taven was embarrassing and that there wasn’t a single soul in the arena, yet he was still desperate for attention. Vincent said that he would never get the approval he was looking for, and his legacy is that of a failure.

Vincent went to throw a dart at Taven’s chest, but the lights went out and it ended up being none other than Mike Bennett. Bennett ran Bateman and Vincent off and hugged Taven as the show went off the air. The Kingdom is back.

Mike Bennett returns to ROH, reunites with Matt Taven

The ending of the latest episode of Ring of Honor television saw Mike Bennett make his return to the promotion.

Matt Taven defeated Bateman in the main event of this week’s ROH TV but was attacked by Bateman immediately after. Vincent Marseglia then came out, cut a promo on Taven, and was about to attack Taven with a dart, but the lights went out and Bennett’s theme music started to play. The lights then went out again and Bennett was in the ring when they came back. He made the save and fought off Marseglia and Bateman until they bailed.

Bennett and Taven raised each other’s arms and hugged at the end of the show. They were formerly stablemates in The Kingdom and held the ROH Tag Team titles and NJPW’s IWGP Tag Team titles while Bennett was with ROH. After Bennett departed the promotion, Taven introduced a new version of The Kingdom in 2016 with Marseglia and TK O’Ryan as his stablemates. Marseglia turned against Taven in November 2019.

Marseglia is now the leader of The Righteous in ROH.

Bennett and his wife Maria Kanellis were released by WWE during the promotion’s roster cuts this April. Bennett is also currently part of the United Wrestling Network’s World Championship tournament and will face Chris Dickinson in the finals on a future edition of UWN Primetime Live.

UWN Primetime Live results: Aldis vs. Bennett NWA title match

This was the first of four weekly pay-per-views from UWN which will also feature some talent from the NWA.

The show opened with David Marquez running down the card when Chris Dickinson made his way in and cut a promo about how he was going to take every opportunity in front of him and that he doesn’t care about the UWN or NWA and was here to make a statement. There were some technical issues during the promo, but the majority of it was quite good.

West Coast Pro Wrestling Champion Alex Hammerstone defeated EJ Sparks to retain

Hammerstone took down Sparks with a waist lock. Sparks was able to comeback with some strikes and a springboard forearm. Sparks went for a corner go-over, but Hammerstone cut him off with a back rake and a Spinal Countdown. Hammerstone sent Sparks into the corner and he dropped as he hit the turnbuckles very hard.

Hammerstone hit a backbreaker, a few shoulders to the stomach in the corner and an overhead belly to belly. He locked on an abdominal stretch, but Sparks fought out and hit a kick. Hammerstone no sold it, but Sparks hit a DDT and eventually got a near fall. Hammerstone eventually picked up Sparks and hit the Nightmare Pendulum for the win.

This match was perfectly fine from what I was able to see, but technical issues with the stream constantly freezing made it difficult to enjoy.

— Joe Galli from the NWA greeted the fans and thanked them for tuning in and spending money to watch the show in a nice touch. I love his announcing.

— Nick Aldis cut a good promo, saying that he has nothing left to say. He talked about how the World title meant the world to Mike Bennett and it meant the world to him, and that Bennett was not going to make his name at Aldis’ expense.

Jordan Clearwater defeated Will Allday

Allday went for a headscissors, but Clearwater countered into a neckbreaker. Clearwater hit a huge clothesline for a two count. Allday hit a frog splash for a two count and then a suplex before missing with a PK. He turned around and landed a kick to the back of Clearwater’s head and then a double stop for two. Clearwater hit a bulldog for two. Allday hit a suicide dive, but ate a Midas Touch, giving Clearwater the win.

This was nearly unwatchable due to more feed glitches and freezing, but I liked what I saw from Clearwater.

Kamille defeated Heather Monroe

Kamille used her power to block an armdrag immediately and then knocked Monroe over with a shoulderblock. Monroe used a sleeper, but Kamille powered out and hit a running elbow. She hit several European uppercuts and a gutwrench suplex and set up for a spear, but Monroe rolled to the outside. Kamille went for a fireman’s carry on the floor, but Monroe got out and shoved her into the ringpost and started to work over her arm.

Once they were back in the ring, Kamille managed to hit a Samoan drop, but sold her arm afterward. Monroe continued to work over the arm, while Kamille’s power kept her in the match. Kamille ducked a kick and went for the torture rack, but couldn’t lock it on due to her shoulder. Kamille hit a neckbreaker instead, but Monroe kicked out. Monroe hit a knee and went for Dress to Kill, but Kamille powered out and hit a spear for the win.

— Eli Drake cut a promo about how the world was locked down for the last few months, but he was so happy to be back and able to talk to the people. The rest of the promo was hard to make out due to more feed freezes.

— Dan Joseph cut a promo about keeping the United Television title.

Wolf Zaddies and The Tribe went to a no contest.

This match was unwatchable due to the glitches in the stream. Both teams exchanged their finishers but the other teammate broke up the pinfall, eventually ending in a no contest. Both teams brawled to the back afterward.

Chris Dickinson defeated Jordan Cruz

Dickinson attacked right away and clotheslined Cruz on the entrance ramp before going back to the ring and grabbing a mic to introduce himself. He cut a promo about how he needed better competition as Cruz crawled back to the ring and decided to fight. Dickinson made him pay, hitting a series of hard kicks and stomps.

Dickinson locked on a half crab and stomped on Cruz’s back while he had the submission on. He let it go and hit a suplex for a two count. Cruz hit a hurricanrana, but it wasn’t enough for the win. Dickinson blocked a running bulldog before hitting a huge death valley driver for the pinfall victory.

United Television Champion Dan Joseph defeated Levi Shapiro

Shapiro wore a glove, which he has loaded in the past. The announcers pointed out that he also uses the claw with that gloved hand and it is super powered because he had an injury that caused the tendons to heal more tightly, giving his hand even more strength. I love how wacky that is. Joseph hit a dropkick and the ref botched the count and counted three despite the kickout. The match ended in complete chaos.

Well, that was something. The finish was all sorts of weird. The stream also started freezing again right at the end of the match, which just added to the weirdness.

NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis defeated Mike Bennett (w/ Maria Kanellis) to retain

This match started fast with Bennett taking it right to Aldis with a series of hard chops and forearms. Bennett went for a spear, but Aldis dodged and the referee was taken out. He went to grab the title belt, but Maria stopped him. Kamille then came out to drive Maria away, and Bennett hit a flying crossbody off the ramp onto Aldis, but the camera missed it. Back in the ring, Aldis hit the MDD for a two count.

Bennett floated over another MDD attempt and hit a superkick and a discus clothesline on Aldis for two. Bennett hit a series of elbows to the neck, but Aldis fought back and hit a tombstone and then a flying elbow for two. Bennett hit a superplex and then a spear, but Aldis kicked out. Bennett hit another superkick and then hit a piledriver.

Bennett crawled over to make the cover, but Aldis got his foot on the rope for a very close near fall. Maria grabbed the title and handed to Bennett who thought about using it as a weapon, but he put it down and went for the piledriver again. Aldis countered, but Bennett went for a dive off the middle rope and Alids countered into the Texas clover leaf.

Bennett screamed “I need this!” as he tried to make it to the ropes, but Aldis kept dragging him back to the middle of the ring and he went unconscious, giving Aldis the successful title defense.

This was a perfectly solid match, but more glitches in the stream at the start of the match hurt it a bit. Bennett was determined to show that he could go, and Aldis looked quite good, all things considered.

After the show, Aldis cut a promo that was exclusive to FITE.tv. He said he was tested to his limits tonight, and Bennett was tough. Aldis said it was 51-49 and he didn’t like those odds tonight, but he was happy to continue to hold the title and put it up against the best competition. He finished saying that Bennett is absolutely a pro wrestler but he wasn’t “The National Treasure.”

Final Thoughts:

The show as a whole would have been a very solid and fun professional wrestling card but the streaming issues hurt it badly, making the first two thirds almost unwatchable. I’m still interested to see some of the matches next week, especially Thunder Rosa’s match against Priscilla Kelly. Hopefully, they iron out the glitches before then.

Kassius Ohno confirms WWE release, announces return of Chris Hero

Chris Hero has made it clear that he is back.

Hero, who went under the name Kassius Ohno in WWE, announced he was gone from the company in a tweet tonight. Using the hashtag #ChrisHeroIsBack, Hero posted a video showing black and white footage of him in WWE. That footage then stopped, and footage of him in color as Chris Hero ended the video.

Dave Meltzer confirmed that Hero had been released from WWE last week. He had been with the company since 2016 after previously having a run in the company from 2011-2013. In this most recent run, he had been mainly used in the NXT undercard. He had recently been working under the NXT UK brand prior to the coronavirus outbreak.

There have been a number of cuts across all of WWE, including its corporate offices, writing staff and talent both on the main roster and on NXT. Mike and Maria Kanellis, who announced they were starting a podcast tonight, were among the main roster releases.

Maria Kanellis-Bennett & Mike Bennett expecting first child

Another WWE couple is expecting a baby next year.

Maria Kanellis-Bennett announced on Instagram today that she’s pregnant with her and Mike Bennett’s first child. She wrote that she’s 13 weeks pregnant, noting that “life is what happens when you are making other plans” because they thought they had put their plans to have a baby on hold earlier this year.

Despite that, Maria wrote that they’re happy for their new path, that Mike has wanted children for a long time and her biological clock recently started ticking, and that now is the perfect time for their family.

Maria said that she plans on coming back to WWE with her doctor’s approval after giving birth and after she gets to spend plenty of time with the baby.

The couple hasn’t been on television since the August 29th episode of SmackDown, though Mike has faced Bobby Roode in dark matches in recent weeks. Maria wasn’t with Mike when he faced Roode last week or when Mike wrestled against Sami Zayn at SmackDown’s house show last night.

Maria and Mike got married in 2014. They were paired together on television in Ring of Honor and Impact Wrestling before joining the SmackDown roster at this year’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

Here’s Maria’s full post announcing her pregnancy:

“The Power of Love is Strong…..And BABY makes 3. Mike and I are happy to announce I am 13 weeks pregnant!! Life is what happens when you are making other plans. This is the universe’s plan for us. Last year Mike and I tried to expand our family when we had a lighter schedule and this year we thought we had put those plans on hold but apparently that is not what is meant to be and we are so happy for our new path. Mike has wanted children for a long time (he is gonna be a very good daddy) and my biological clock just recently started ticking!! Timing is everything and now is our perfect time for family.

As far as the future… WWE is and has been my dream job and I plan on coming back with my doctor’s approval after the baby is born and get’s plenty of mommy time. But, until then, I will be posting my REAL updates on my social media accounts. There is so much pressure to have the perfect pregnancy, gain the right amount of weight, and be super stylish. But, let me just say I’ve gained 7 pounds, been nauseous everyday, and wore yoga pants every day since 6 weeks. I’m not perfect. Haha… life is messy. My husband is a recovering prescription drug addict, we are in the middle of buying a house, we are moving across county, and I’m pregnant!!! I figure I can either stress or feel blessed. I feel blessed. I choose happiness. WE choose happiness. Thank you to our families, friends, WWE, and the fans for all of the support! Let’s continue building the #PowerofLove with my husband on Smackdown Live. Because the Power of Love is Real. I have the picture to prove it…..”

Maria Kanellis returns, Mike Bennett debuts at WWE Money in the Bank

Maria Kanellis and Mike Bennett have arrived on the SmackDown roster.

They were introduced as Mike and Maria Kanellis on tonight’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view, with the announcers mentioning that Mike had taken Maria’s last name. Maria cut a promo saying that for the last seven years, she had been looking for a partner and she ended up finding Mike. She said their goal in WWE is to “promote the power of love.”

It had been rumored that Bennett and Kanellis were heading to WWE following their departure from Impact Wrestling earlier this year. Both were spotted in St. Louis this weekend prior to the PPV.

Kanellis and Bennett started to appear together as an on-air couple going as far back as 2011 for Ring of Honor. They also were featured together in Impact Wrestling and in Japan for New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Cody w/ Brandi Rhodes defeated “The Miracle” Mike Bennett w/ Maria Kanellis-Bennett

Maria distracted Cody, and Bennett hit a hangman’s DDT on the outside to take control. Cody made a comeback, hit the Alabama Slam, and followed up with the Beautiful Disaster. Bennett busted out the pedigree for a near fall. They traded shots in the middle of the ring with Cody getting the better of Bennett. Cody hit the Crossroads to win the match.
