  • An angle aired on WWE’s social media this afternoon between Hit Row and Drake Maverick & Killian Dain.
  • Kavita Devi has denied being released from WWE. She told the Hindustan Times regarding those reports: “I’ve read some of those reports, and they aren’t accurate. I have been back at home in India since January. My husband contracted Covid earlier this year and I needed to be here with my family, I chose not to go back to America. Everyone at WWE has been incredibly supportive, I am filled with gratitude for everything they have done for me. I have also had an ACL injury for over a year and have been unable to perform in the ring but WWE still supported me through all of that. They understand that India is where I need to be. We are working together on a new arrangement that allows me to be home, but still part of the WWE Universe.”
  • Sports Illustrated has an interview with Pete Dunne, who talks about tonight’s number one contender match.
  • Asuka on Twitter mentioned that she did motion capture work for the latest release of Virtua Fighter 5.
  • Booker T, Diamond Dallas Page, and Jerry Lawler will be a part of the Kansas City Comicon on August 20-22.
  • Brie and Nikki Bella spoke to Today about motherhood.

  • Hikaru Shida responded on Twitter regarding the situation over the weekend where AEW Spanish announcer Willie Urbina was fired after mocking her accent: “I didn’t wanna talk about this before my big day, so let me tell you now. I don’t give a s*** what other people say about my race because I love it and I proud of it, and because I know which is fool. I don’t even feel anger. Because I wanted to become a wrestler so I had to watch it to know what to become. And when they got the three hours, I didn’t watch it as fervently because it’s too long. Two hours is the perfect time for a wrestling TV show. It’s exciting, it’s action packed and the third one hour show will be even more exciting. Even more action packed with all the same talent and half the time to fit it in. So it’s good, it’s going to be really good.”

WWE announces more participants for Mae Young Classic

Nearly half of the lineup for this summer’s Mae Young Classic has now been confirmed.

WWE added four more participants to the 32-wrestler field today. Three of the new additions are returning from last year’s Mae Young Classic, while the other is a newcomer to the tournament.

Mia Yim, Mercedes Martinez, and Kavita Devi will be back this year. Yim and Martinez aren’t under WWE contract, but both made it past the first round in 2017. Martinez, a veteran indie wrestler, lost to Shayna Baszler in the semifinals. Yim was formerly known as Jade in TNA/Impact Wrestling and was defeated by Baszler in the second round.

Devi is from India and lost to Dakota Kai in the opening round last year, with WWE’s clip of their match on YouTube currently having nearly 30 million views. Devi is under contract to WWE and appeared in the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal this April.

Killer Kelly was the other wrestler announced for the tournament today. Kelly is from Portugal and wrestled on both of WWE’s United Kingdom-brand shows at Royal Albert Hall last month.

UPDATE: WWE originally announced a wrestler named Crystal, who made her in-ring debut in 2016 and calls herself the “Queen of Philippine Wrestling,” for the tournament before removing her from their article. She took part in a WWE tryout in Manila in 2017 and currently wrestles in Southeast Asia. She may be announced at another point as WWE continues their rollout of this year’s participants.

The 2018 Mae Young Classic will be taped at Full Sail University on August 8 and 9. Here’s the updated lineup:

  • Kaitlyn
  • Rhea Ripley
  • Io Shirai
  • Nicole Matthews
  • Jinny
  • Kacy Catanzaro
  • Deonna Purrazzo
  • Tegan Nox (formerly known as Nixon Newell)
  • Jessie Elaban
  • Reina Gonzalez
  • Taynara Conti (won a qualifying match at NXT TV tapings)
  • Mia Yim
  • Mercedes Martinez
  • Kavita Devi
  • Killer Kelly

Six NXT wrestlers take part in WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal

Six wrestlers from NXT appeared in tonight’s WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal.

Peyton Royce, Kairi Sane, Taynara Conti, Kavita Devi, Bianca Belair, and Dakota Kai were the six who took part in the match. The latter five were also in the Mae Young Classic last summer, where Sane defeated Shayna Baszler in the finals.

Devi, who is from India and reported to the Performance Center earlier this year, lost to Kai in the first round of the Mae Young Classic. WWE’s clip of their tournament match currently has 21 million views on YouTube. Conti represented Brazil in the MYC and came out with the country’s flag tonight.

Despite Royce’s inclusion, her Iconic Duo partner Billie Kay wasn’t in the WrestleMania 34 battle royal.

The NXT representatives worked together, with Belair hitting a 450 splash and Sane doing her Insane Elbow. But it came down to Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Naomi. Bayley and Banks teamed up near the end and went to slap hands when they thought they were the only two left, but Bayley threw Banks out of the ring. Naomi then reappeared, hit the Rear View, and eliminated Bayley to win the match.

WWE officially confirms the signing of Kavita Devi

WWE has officially confirmed the signing of another Mae Young Classic participant.

In conjunction with Jinder Mahal’s media tour of India, WWE announced that Kavita Devi and Shadia Bseiso (who is from Jordan) have signed with the company — touting that they’re the first Indian and Middle Eastern women to sign WWE contracts. Both attended tryouts that the company held in Dubai this past April.

“Recruiting Kavita and Shadia to join our developmental system underscores WWE’s ongoing commitment to building a talent roster as diverse as our fan base,” Paul “Triple H” Levesque said. “We’re confident Kavita and Shadia will inspire future WWE superstars as we continue to recruit the most talented athletes and entertainers from around the world.”

Devi lost to Dakota Kai in the first round of the Mae Young Classic. A clip of the match that WWE posted on YouTube far outdrew anything else from the tournament due to interest in India and it being posted on Indian news websites, with it currently approaching eight million views.

Dave Meltzer reported in the September 18th edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Devi was already under contract with WWE. Meltzer notes that she’s not scheduled to start in the United States until January.

Tessa Blanchard, four others confirmed for WWE Mae Young Classic

WWE has confirmed five more wrestlers who will be participating in this summer’s Mae Young Classic.

In an announcement that was made by ESPN, it was noted that Tessa Blanchard, Abbey Laith, Taynara Conti, Kavita Devi, and Jazzy Gabert would be taking part in the women’s tournament. They join Toni Storm, Princesa Sugehit, Lacey Evans, and Sarah Logan as names already confirmed for the 32-competitor field.

Blanchard is the daughter of Tully Blanchard and the stepdaughter of “Magnum T.A.” Terry Allen. She is only 21 years old but has been wrestling since 2014. She debuted for Stardom last year and has continued to appear for the promotion.

Dave Meltzer previously reported that Blanchard was a name that had been mentioned for the tournament.

With her getting a new in-ring name yesterday, Laith seemed like a lock for the Mae Young Classic. She wrestled as Kimber Lee and was a standout on the indies before being signed by WWE. She had been using her real name (Kimberly Frankele) in NXT before the name change.

Conti is also a fairly recent WWE signing who has been given a new name. The Brazilian (named Taynara Melo) debuted in a battle royal at an NXT house show earlier this year. She has a background in judo and jiu-jitsu.

Devi is from India and attended WWE’s tryouts in Dubai this past April. She has trained with The Great Khali and has participated in weightlifting. Her being in the tournament was first revealed by the Times of India this morning.

Rounding out the list, Gabert (also known as Alpha Female) is a veteran pro wrestler from Germany. She has wrestled for wXw, Stardom, and has done a few matches for TNA. She has also competed in MMA.

The Mae Young Classic will begin taping on July 13th and 14th at Full Sail University.
