Tony Khan says he thought WWE bid was ‘a very reasonable number’

Tony Khan said his WWE bid back in 2023 was reasonable.

It was recently revealed that the AEW president put in a $6.9 billion dollar bid for WWE back when it was up for sale. In an interview with Vince Russo & Jonathan Coachman, Khan said he though what he had offered was reasonable, and would have kicked himself if he didn’t at least make an offer.

“I was very interested in the process and I think that if there was going to be a sale, I would at least wanted a chance to be involved. If it had gone for any less than that, I would have really kicked myself,” he said.

“While respecting the confidentiality of that, I would say I don’t have any complaints about that process from my side right now,” he continued. “While respecting the confidentiality of the whole thing, I also would say that, at the time, that seemed like to me, just reiterating, if it had gone for any less I would have kicked myself. Why wouldn’t you put in a bid. I thought it was a very reasonable number.”

Khan’s bid came to light as part of an ongoing lawsuit between shareholders and WWE, with plantiffs questioning WWE’s eventual sale to Endeavor. WWE’s new parent company has since combined WWE and UFC into one corporate entity, TKO.

Tony Khan offers to do podcast with Vince Russo, Jonathan Coachman

Two veterans of the Attitude Era want to talk to AEW CEO Tony Khan, and Khan apparently wants to talk to them too.

Vince Russo—formerly the lead creative voice in WWE, WCW, and TNA, among other promotions—brought up Khan’s name on The Coach and Bro Show with former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman.

“Top of my bucket list right now is I want to meet Tony Khan,” Russo said. “I would mark out having a conversation with Tony Khan. It would be surreal to me.”

Coachman followed by saying they want Khan to come on the show. “We need AEW to be successful in the wrestling business,” he added.

Coachman went into more detail on social media. “We have an open invitation for Tony Khan to come on our show.”

Khan himself replied to Coachman’s post. “I would love to come on the show with you and [Russo], Coach!” he wrote. “I’ve been a fan of both of yours for many years!” He added that Russo was doing a “tremendous job” with Juggalo Championship Wrestling, “which I enjoy very much.”

Russo then shared Khan’s post, a sign that the former WCW World Champion could be checking off that bucket list item soon.

“Tony, it would be an honor—seriously,” Russo wrote.

Renee Young joining WWE Raw announce team on full-time basis

Following her two guest appearances over the past month, Renee Young has been added to the Raw announce team on a full-time basis.

WWE announced this morning that Young will be joining Michael Cole and Corey Graves on the Raw commentary team starting with tonight’s episode. Jonathan Coachman will no longer be calling Raw and will instead become the host of WWE’s pay-per-view pre-shows.

Coachman will start in his new position at Hell in a Cell on Sunday. Young was the previous host of the PPV pre-shows.

With Coachman having to miss the episodes due to his obligations with the World Long Drive Association on the Golf Channel, Young filled in for him on commentary on the August 13 and September 3 editions of Raw. Young is also part of the Mae Young Classic announce team with Cole and Beth Phoenix.

Young tweeted about her new full-time role: “I am so so so insanely excited about this! To be the first woman to take over that chair that so many amazingly talented voices and personalities have sat in before me! Thank you to @VinceMcMahon @StephMcMahon @TripleH @MichaelCole and @WWEGraves (and MANY others)”

UPDATE: Coachman has also commented on his new role and congratulated Young: “A sincere congratulations to @ReneeYoungWWE for a much deserved move to the table on Raw. To be part of a team means understanding your strengths and using them to help the team grow. I have always embraced with positivity any role asked of me. That will not change.”

Booker T filling in for Coachman on Monday’s WWE Raw

Booker T will be returning to commentary on Raw this Monday, at least for one night.

Jonathan Coachman mentioned on Twitter earlier today that he would be missing Raw this coming Monday as he will be doing commentary for the golf program World Long Driver on Tuesday evening. This comes after Booker T mentioned that he would be at Raw in a video clip that was posted by his podcast co-host Brad Gilmore on Twitter. WWE has yet to officially confirm the announcing situation for Monday.

Coachman has been a part of the Raw commentary team since January 29, when he replaced Booker T. He was previously in WWE from 1999 to 2008, both as a heel personality and a commentator for both the Raw and SmackDown brands during the initial brand split. Booker T, who had been doing commentary since the new brand split in 2016, has since been working on pre-show panels before big WWE events.

Jonathan Coachman fires back at ESPN sexual harassment claims

After being named in a sexual harassment lawsuit against his old employers Monday, Jonathan Coachman fired back Tuesday morning in denying the claims.

On Monday, former ESPN employee Adrienne Lawrence filed a lawsuit in federal court against ESPN, claiming the company fostered a culture that empowered sexual harassment and discrimination, using Coachman, Chris Berman, John Buccigross, and others as examples of the problem.

On Twitter, Coachman, now a broadcaster with WWE, responded to someone asking a question about Lawrence’s claims:

In a statement, WWE said, “We take these matters very seriously and are investigating.”

Jonathan Coachman named in ESPN sexual harassment lawsuit

This story was updated at 6:50 AM Eastern.

Jonathan Coachman was one of several ESPN employees named in a sexual discrimination and harassment lawsuit filed against the company Monday.

Former ESPN employee Adrienne Lawrence filed the suit in Connecticut’s United States District Court, but damages were not specified.

Coachman, now with WWE, was named on page 36 of the lawsuit in the section “Men Preyed on Ms. Lawrence Under the Guise of Being Collegial or Providing Mentorship”.

From the suit:

“On or around January 18, 2016, SportsCenter anchor Jonathan Coachman (“Coachman”) emailed Ms. Lawrence offering to provide her with mentorship and providing his cellphone number. When he contacted her via text, he quickly turned a professional conversation into a personal matter, asking her about her musical interests. He was employing the ESPN predators’ playbook. Colleagues then cautioned Ms. Lawrence that Coachman was notorious for sexually harassing female employees. After learning that, Ms. Lawrence made an effort to communicate to Coachman that she had a boyfriend, after which she did not hear from him again and he made no offers of mentorship.

Coachman’s reputation for making unwelcome sexual advances to ward women and engaging in other sexually harassing behavior was not a secret. Cary Chow had warned Ms. Lawrence about him when he gave the short list of men at ESPN who were notorious for sexual harassment. Coachman had sent Walsh inappropriate photos of himself and text messages, falsely telling her colleagues that they were romantically involved and that she “wanted” him – another common practice of men at ESPN.

At least one young production assistant who joined ESPN just out of college had complained to Ms. Lawrence about Coachman making her feel uncomfortable by complimenting her physical appearance and making passes at her.”

In the footnotes:

“As explained below, when Ms. Lawrence complained to Jack Obringer, Senior Coordinating Producer, StudioProduction of ESPN, Inc. that she was being sexually harassed (by another individual), Obringer guessed that the harasser was “Coachman” and indicated that his inappropriate behavior toward women was well-known to management. Nevertheless, Coachman continued to appear in ESPN commercials and on SportsCenter  without discipline or accountability until he was quietly dismissed on or around April 26, 2017 via layoff.”

Coachman hasn’t made any statement about being named as of this writing. He rejoined the company in late-January as a replacement for Booker T on the Raw announce desk.

When asked for comment, WWE released a brief statement to us early Tuesday morning: “”We take these matters very seriously and are investigating.”

This Lawrence story initially came to light during a Boston Globe feature that named ESPN anchor John Buccigross as the main focus of Lawrence’s issues after text messages between the two were released. The suit also claims that former ESPN personality Chris Berman left a racially charged voicemail for ESPN personality Jemele Hill, something Hill denied on Twitter while expressing disappointment at a private matter made public.

ESPN released a statement that they conducted a thorough investigation and that the claims “are entirely without merit” and “the company will vigorously defend its position and we are confident we will prevail in court.”

The lawsuit document, and some additional insight into the background of Lawrence’s claims, can be found on Deadspin.

Jonathan Coachman joining WWE Raw announce team

Jonathan Coachman is officially back with WWE.

WWE announced this morning that Coachman has re-joined the company and is set to join the Raw announce team starting with tonight’s episode. He’ll be calling the show alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves, with Booker T leaving the announce table and going back to his former role as a panelist on the pre-show panels for pay-per-views.

According to WWE’s announcement, Booker T will also “continue to make appearances on Raw and beyond as a WWE ambassador.”

Following his first stint with WWE, Coachman was a broadcaster for ESPN for nearly a decade until departing the company last year. While he was there, he contributed to ESPN’s growing coverage of pro wrestling and hosted a weekly WWE-focused SportsCenter segment on ESPN News that began in 2015 and ended in 2017.

Coachman made his first post-ESPN appearance for WWE last Monday. He was featured in a backstage comedy segment on Raw’s 25th anniversary episode.

Tonight’s Raw will take place at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It’s the third straight night that the venue has hosted WWE programming, and the show will focus on fallout from the Royal Rumble.

WWE Raw 25: More names set, SD involvement, pre-show

More names have been announced for Raw’s 25th anniversary show.

WWE confirmed today that Jonathan Coachman, Lilian Garcia, MVP, William Regal, Harvey Wippleman, and Howard Finkel will be on Monday’s episode. It will be the first time Coachman has appeared on WWE television since departing ESPN last year.

SmackDown’s authority figures, Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan, and some of the brand’s roster have been announced for Raw 25 as well. AJ Styles, Charlotte Flair, The Usos, and The New Day will be on the show. With it being the last Raw before the Royal Rumble, SmackDown’s involvement could be to further the build to the pay-per-view.

Before Raw 25 goes on the air, there will be a pre-show on the WWE Network, WWE.com, and some of the company’s social media channels. It will start at 7 p.m. Eastern time and will be hosted by Renee Young, Peter Rosenberg, David Otunga, and Sam Roberts, with Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler also appearing from the Manhattan Center.

AJ Styles vs. John Cena vs. Dean Ambrose kicking off WWE No Mercy

Viewers won’t have to wait long for tonight’s WWE World Championship match.

ESPN’s Jonathan Coachman tweeted on Sunday afternoon: “sources tell me tonight don’t tune in late. First time ever a @Wwe ppv will start with main event. Ambrose/Cena/styles for title. 8 east.”

WWE also confirmed the news themselves.

The scheduled main event for the show was AJ Styles defending his title against John Cena and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match. No indication was given as to what match would now close the show.

The decision to open the show with the title match is likely the result of tough competition No Mercy is facing on television. The second presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will start at 9 p.m. ET. The first debate between the two broke ratings records, and Sunday night’s debate figures to do a strong number as well given recent controversies surrounding Trump.

No Mercy will also go against a strong Sunday Night Football game, with the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers kicking off at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Daniel Bryan: ‘Very little’ of Miz confrontation was scripted

On WWE’s weekly SportsCenter segment with Jonathan Coachman, Daniel Bryan again addressed his heated exchange with The Miz from last week’s Talking Smack.

The confrontation between the two generated significant buzz online with many questioning how much of it was scripted. And in response to Coachman, Bryan finally answered the question.

“Very little, so I just knew that Miz was going to come up, we were just going to banter back and forth. But Miz and I have known each other for a long time, and we really know how to get like at each other’s nerves. I brought up the idea that he wrestled like a coward, and he knows I don’t like the way he wrestles, right? I just don’t like it; it’s not my thing. And I called him out on that. And then he called me out on something that’s very personal to me.”

Bryan said Miz knows he’s constantly having feelings of wanting to get back into the ring because he loves wrestling so much. But, Bryan says he knows it’s not a smart idea and his wife keeps him in check. Bryan reiterated his words from this week’s edition of Talking Smack, saying he sometimes thinks Miz is right and he thinks of himself as a coward for not returning to wrestling.

Bryan noted that part of him wanted to punch Miz in the face during the segment, but he figured it wasn’t such a smart idea on live TV.

Coachman asked how the two move forward, and Bryan said it would be interesting to see. He said he thinks WWE will keep them away from each other for a little bit because they know how intense it can get between the two of them, especially now that SmackDown is live.

The segment from SportsCenter is available to watch below:
