Lucha Underground results: Johnny Mundo vs. Jake Strong

The Takeaway —

Jake Strong looks to be being built up for a match against Matanza at some point, which should be all sorts of fun. Matanza practically murdered Johnny Mundo and Taya Valkyrie at the end of the show. Strong has his eye on the Gift of the Gods Championship, and you can’t help but think that whomever he challenges will not be able to stand up to him.

Sammy Guevara made his return to Lucha Underground, joining forces with Ivelisse and XO Lishus. Mil Muertes continues to be one of my favorite monsters in wrestling.

The Recap —

The show opened by recapping all the legs that Jake Strong broke throughout the season. Antonio Cueto had Strong come into his office and talked about how he was impressed with the destruction that Strong has brought to Lucha Underground. Strong didn’t want a title shot handed to him, so Cueto gave him a chance at the Gift of the Gods medallions.

Strong said he saw the sacrifices that Matanza was making, and how there should be some left for him. Then his voice changed to a demonic voice and said that the temple was his.

Cueto announced to the audience that he was going to crown a new Gift of the Gods Champion before Ultima Lucha Cuatro.

Jake Strong defeated Big Bad Steve, Aerostar, PJ Black, Hernandez, Dante Fox, and King Cuerno in a battle royal for a chance at the Gift of the Gods Championship

This was a very quick battle royal that saw Strong absolutely dominate everyone and throw them over the top.

Strong told Cueto that he wanted to take on every man in the match next week for the championship, and that he was going to destroy every one of them. The match was booked for next week, but Strong wanted more, so Cueto booked the main event for tonight: Jake Strong vs. Johnny Mundo.

Killshot vs. The Mack ended in a no contest due to Mil Muertes

Killshot and The Mack had a very fast-paced match with Son of Havoc watching from the crowd. The Mack and Killshot hit several high-flying moves, however, what was going to be an excellent match was cut short as Mil Muertes ran in and took out both men.

Son of Havoc tried to make the save, but Muertes destroyed everyone as Killshot made his way out of the ring to avoid the monster.

Ivelisse and XO Lishus talked about how they were challenged to fight for the Trios titles against The White Rabbit Tribe and The Reptile Tribe. However, Joey Ryan was not fit to wrestle due to the beating he took last week, so they announced Sammy Guevara as their partner.

Famous B came out and told Guevara that he was brought to LU as a member of Infamous Inc., and as per his contract, he could only work for him for the next seven years. So XO Lishus and Ivelisse were without a partner. Guevara did a dive onto Famous B, threw the contract into the garbage, put the garbage can over B’s head, and superkicked the garbage can.

Jake Strong defeated Johnny Mundo

They started the match with Strong out-wrestling Mundo and overpowering him with a belly-to-belly suplex. Mundo responded with a Beautiful Disaster kick. Mundo went for a springboard, but Strong cut him off, blocked a kick, and drove Mundo into the ring post. Strong went to the outside and beat on Mundo for a little bit before bringing him back into the ring and stomping on him.

Strong hit Mundo so hard with a lariat that he fell down. Strong went for his avalanche splash off the middle rope, but Mundo got his feet up and brought it right to him with a tornado DDT. Mundo hit a spinning wheel kick, a knee to the face, and a standing Shooting Star Press, but Strong kicked out. Mundo went for Moonlight Drive, but after a series of counters, Strong sent him to the outside again.

Strong and Mundo ended up brawling into the audience, and Strong no sold some of the brawling. Mundo dove from one part of the stands into another, and then hit a massive sunset flip powerbomb over the guardrail to the floor on Strong, which was brutal. Mundo rolled Strong into the ring and hit a 450 splash elbow, but Strong kicked out.

Strong tried to hit a superplex, but Mundo fought him off. Strong ran up the ropes and hit an overhead belly-to-belly all the way across the ring, then hit his avalanche splash, but Mundo kicked out. Mundo went for the End of the World, but Strong rolled him up and locked on the ankle lock! Mundo sent him to the floor, hit a superkick when he came back in, hit Moonlight Drive, and Strong still kicked out!

After an exchange of strikes, Strong grabbed another ankle lock. Mundo tried so hard to escape, and he threw his elbow pad across the ring. The referee picked up the elbow pad to take it out of the ring, and as he did so, Mundo low blowed Strong to get out of it. Mundo hit the End of the World, but Strong kicked out and locked on the ankle lock again! Mundo tapped out and the crowd reacted in horror. This match was so awesome. Go out of your way to see it.

Just as Strong was about to destroy Mundo, Matanza came out. Strong threw Mundo at him and Matanza proceeded to annihilate Mundo. Taya Valkyrie ran out to try and make the save, but Matanza hit Wrath of the Gods on Taya. Mundo was busted wide open and bleeding everywhere while he was trying to protect Taya. Antonio Cueto came out smiling as Matanza was covered in Mundo’s blood. Awesome closing angle too.

Lucha Underground season 4 premiere: Aztec Warfare title match

By Michael Perry for F4WOnline.com

At the sparsely-attended funeral of Dario Cueto, Agent Winter explains that they can no longer use the original Temple. A mysterious man explains that he has some space that will be the new Temple. The man is Cueto’s father (played by the same actor).

Winter says that Dario’s murder was ordered by his father. Cueto’s father looks over his son’s body, taking the key from his neck before shutting the casket.

At the new Temple, there is a ten-bell salute to Dario. The salute is interrupted by his father, who cuts a promo. He says that his name is Antonio Cueto and that he is the new owner and promoter of Lucha Underground. He throws a portrait of Dario outside and then orders an Aztec Warfare match for the title.

Aztec Warfare for the Lucha Underground Championship

Mack and Killshot are in the ring. Antonio says that the Trios champs will be competing tonight as entrants 1 and 2. He says Dante Fox is missing in action, and that whatever luchador comes in at 3 will be their new partner. Melissa introduces their new partner: Son of Havoc. Mack and Killshot don’t seem to approve.

Mack and Killshot work together against Son of Havoc early until Joey Ryan enters at 4. Ryan handcuffs himself to the ropes. Entrant 5 is Mr. Pectacular (aka Jessie Godderz). Killshot schoolboys Mack by surprise to eliminate him. Pentagon Dark enters at 6 and cleans house. Ryan takes off the handcuffs, but Pentagon quickly eliminates him. Killshot is eliminated by Havoc. Tommy Dreamer enters at 7 and throws a garbage can full of weapons into the ring as Pectacular is eliminated by Pentagon.

Mariposa enters at 8, but quickly gets eliminated after a cutter by Havoc. Pentagon spears Dreamer into a pile of thumbtacks on the bleachers, then takes him back to the ring and eliminates him. Massaro comes in at 9 and beats up a pizza delivery man. He offers Pentagon a slice, but is met with a superkick and is swiftly dispatched with a Pentagon driver.

Hernandez makes his return at 10. Pentagon immediately snaps his arm and eliminates him. Pentagon continues his dominance, eliminating Son of Havoc. Johnny Mundo enters at 11. Mundo and Pentagon go at it in the ring until Ricky Mundo, with a creepy doll, enters at 12. Johnny eliminates Ricky and Fenix enters at 13.

Fenix cleans house. Jeremiah Crane (Sami Callihan) enters at 14. He and Fenix fight until Mil Muertes enters at 15. Muertes destroys everybody and poses, but Fenix eliminates him with a double stomp from the top rope. Daga enters at 16 with Cobra Moon.

Chavo Guerrero is another surprise entrant at 17. Crane stares him down, and Pentagon catches him in a Pentagon driver for yet another elimination. Chavo then eliminates Fenix. Mundo hits End of the World to eliminate Daga and King Cuerno enters at 18. Dragon Azteca, Jr. enters the match at 19.

Cobra Moon and Vibora come out and attack Mundo, who eliminated Daga earlier. Vibora is not in the match, but Marty Martinez is. He enters at 20. Vibora tombstones Mundo and exits the ring with Moon. Martinez pins Mundo.

Cuerno hits a frog splash and eliminates Dragon Azteca, possibly sending a message to Chavo. Chavo eliminates Cuerno with a Gory Bomb. Pentagon superkicks Chavo and pins him. It’s down to Pentagon and Martinez.

Martinez and Pentagon exchange blows until Marty gets a near fall. Marty hits a curb stomp for another near fall. Pentagon makes a quick comeback. He goes for the finish, but Marty bites him and hits a double underhook DDT for yet another near fall.

Pentagon, exhausted and desperate, hits a flipping piledriver from the top and a package piledriver for the pin to retain the title: the first wrestler ever to do so in Aztec Warfare. Pentagon snaps Martinez’s arm.

Cueto congratulates the winner. He says that while Dario would have made him defend his title immediately, he’s a better promoter than Dario ever was. Therefore, next week, Pentagon will defend the title against his son, Matanza Cueto.

Johnny Mundo confirmed for next season of ‘Survivor’

Confirming what had been reported, John Hennigan (formerly John Morrison in WWE and currently Johnny Mundo in Lucha Underground) will officially be on the next season of CBS’ “Survivor.”

Hennigan was one of the contestants highlighted in the preview video for “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” that aired during last night’s finale for the most recent season of the show. The reality series debuted in 2000 — and “David vs. Goliath” will be its 37th edition. The person who wins the show receives a $1 million grand prize.

Inside Survivor first reported that Hennigan was part of the cast for the season, which was filmed in Fiji earlier this year. That was corroborated by Hennigan’s Cagematch.com profile also showing a period of in-ring inactivity that coincided with the filming.

“Survivor” host and executive producer Jeff Probst spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how Hennigan fits into the David vs. Goliath theme: “This guy that’s known as Johnny Mundo [a.k.a. John Morrison], the mayor of Slamtown. He’s a professional wrestler, he’s gigantic, he’s charming, and he’s smart. He started with advantage, he had a great family, and he’s used all of these skills to slay everybody his entire life.”

Hennigan is part of the fourth season of Lucha Underground that premieres on June 13th. He’s also been working for Impact Wrestling as Johnny Impact.

“Survivor: David vs. Goliath” will air this fall:

Lucha Underground results: ‘Left for Dead’

Season 3 — Episode 25: “Left for Dead”

The first round of the Cueto Cup tournament wrapped up on the latest episode of Lucha Underground. Storylines advanced and feuds continued at The Temple in Boyle Heights.

The title of the episode referred to the video package that opened the show highlighting the back story of Dante Fox. His story involves his foe, Killshot, and their background in the military. Fox was taken hostage while serving in Afghanistan.

Presumably, Killshot escaped the clutches of terrorists, but in doing so he left Fox behind. Soldiers eventually rescued Fox, leading to him making his way to Boyle Heights where he seeks revenge against Killshot.

PJ Black defeated Sexy Star to advance in the Cueto Cup

Black was the first member of the Worldwide Underground stable to appear on this episode. The stable had a prominent role on the show. In this match, another member of the stable caused a distraction that led to the finish.

In the match, Black provided a good base for Sexy Star’s flying lucha arsenal. She got plenty of offense on the way to losing the match. Black toyed with her early on, but Star quickly fired up ahead of a series of lucha spots.

Star got a near fall after a super Frankensteiner. She also flew to the outside with a crossbody. Back in the ring, she used a second flying crossbody for another near fall. At that point, Taya came out to ringside to cause a distraction. Taya also tossed Black a pair of brass knux, only for Star to get ahold of them.

Star hit Black with the brass knux, and was thusly disqualified. So, she also laid out the referee using the knux. Taya fled with a smirk on her face, as she accomplished her goal of costing Star the match and getting a win for her stablemate. This seemingly builds to a grudge match between Taya and Sexy Star.

In the weekly countdown hype video building towards Johnny Mundo against Rey Mysterio, this week’s edition showed a montage of training footage. Each combatant also talked about their chances of winning. The story remains that Mysterio is a man of people and Mundo is the cocky champion. These videos have all been tremendous pieces of business, and this edition was more of the same.

Son of Havoc defeated Son of Madness to advance in the Cueto Cup

The story is both are part of a motorcycle club, and Son of Madness arrived in The Temple to make Son of Havoc pay a penance for some slight towards the club. Both had almost identical gear, including similar vests that Matt Striker referred to as their “colors” that represented the club.

This being a grudge match of sorts, there was no collar-and-elbow lockup to start the match. Nor did they have a traditional match. Rather, they had a fight as they brawled in and out of the ring in a match that was all action.

Madness got heat on Havoc, then Havoc made a comeback. Though Madness blocked an attempted Muta-style handspring back elbow, Havoc hit the move moments later. He followed that with a springboard crossbody for a near fall. Madness countered with a double foot stomp and a brainbuster for a near fall. Havoc rallied into doing a tope suicida.

For the finish, Havoc went for a shooting star press that Madness avoided. Havoc impressively landed on his feet only to get schoolboyed. Havoc kicked out and used his own schoolboy to score the pin.

After the match, Madness laid out Havoc and took his vest. Therefore, this feud must continue. Jean Pierre Lafitte once stole Bret Hart’s ring jacket during a lackluster feud in 1995. Let us hope this feud between bikers is more memorable than that. Judging by the action in this match, it probably will be.

Prince Puma defeated Ricky Mandel to advance in the Cueto Cup

Puma wrestled in street clothes that included a hoodie and pants. It was a similar look to what Ricochet wore during his run-in this past weekend at the G1 Special where he seemingly directed a veiled insult at Lucha Underground. Instead of a cap and glasses like in Long Beach, Puma had a mask on in this match at The Temple. There were also no insults, just brooding by Puma.

Mandel is an interning member of Worldwide Underground who cosplayed as Johnny Mundo in this match. Beforehand, he told Puma that he was taking him to “slam town.” Instead, Puma gave him a superkick and proceeded to pummel him in a glorified squash. That does not bode well for Mandel’s internship.

Puma followed the superkick with a northern lights suplex and a brainbuster for a near fall. Mandel tried to fight back, but to no avail. Puma finished off Mandel with a spinning Michinoku Driver for a pinfall in a quick match where Puma showcased his dark side.

An advertisement for Modelo beer highlighted the accomplishments of Sexy Star. The ad portrayed her winning the Lucha Underground Championship as her breaking through a glass ceiling. The ad also insisted it “cemented her place as one of the most iconic female performers in lucha libre history.” Yeah, and Mae Young is a “pioneer” of women’s wrestling.

In a locker room scene, Mysterio was giving a pep talk to Dragon Azteca, who vowed to win the tournament and go on to face Mysterio when he wins the championship. Prince Puma entered the scene to interrupt them. He vowed to win the tournament, and he also wanted to face Mysterio for the title. Puma promised he would not lose in their rematch.

Dante Fox defeated Dragon Azteca Jr. (w/ Rey Mysterio) to advance in the Cueto Cup

They took it to the air early on in the match. Fox began to dominate with his aerial arsenal as the crowd chanted his name. Azteca made a comeback and did a hurricanrana on the floor. That led into a flurry of offense from Azteca. Fox cut him off and they exchanged strikes. Fox executed a running Spanish Fly for a near fall. A “this is awesome” chant broke out.

Taya made her second run-in of the show, flanked by others in the Worldwide Underground. Mysterio fought them off at first as the match continued. Then, Mysterio was catapulted into the arms of Johnny Mundo, who powerbombed him into a wall. The heel stable ganged up on Mysterio for a beatdown.

Azteca made the save with a dive through the ropes. He went to springboard back into the ring, only for him to eat a superkick from Fox. He then delivered the Fox Catcher to score the pinfall. With that, the first round of the tournament is over.

On the next episode, the second round of the Cueto Cup features Mil Muertes against Paul London. Also, Taya meets Jeremiah Crane in a tournament match and Marty the Moth faces Fenix in another tourney match.

Lucha Underground results: Dario Cueto makes an announcement

The Big Takeaway —

Drago’s future with the Reptile Tribe moved forward in a big way, while the slow burn towards Prince Puma turning heel with Vampiro by his side continued.

There was nothing out of this world on this show, but it was a solid night of action with a very good main event that worked as both a match and a way to further a larger story.

Show Recap —

We started off with a recap of the Reptile Tribe’s torture of Drago before a rundown of All Night Long led to Dario Cueto making the sudden death round for tonight.

Rey Mysterio Jr. chatted with Prince Puma backstage as he had visions about Vampiro’s destruction of others. Vampiro appeared in ghoulish makeup to warn Mysterio.

The band played before the fans sang “Return of the Mack” for Mack. Cueto said that the winner of the first fall tonight gets the title and that it’s now falls count anywhere.

Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo defeated The Mack in a sudden death falls count anywhere match to retain his title

Mack bullied him into the corner for a jumping lariat. Mack and Mundo walked and brawled for a bit before Mack hit a cannonball onto Mundo on a pile of chairs. Mundo ate a few chair shots before a twirling slam on some chairs got two for Mack.

Mundo hid in the people before Mack went to toss a chair at him, but Ricky Mandel saved him and Mundo dove on Mack for two. Mundo told Mandel to get a chainsaw, but Sexy Star attacked Mandel.

Mack got a near fall off a Sky High onto a trash can. PJ Black came in but ate a stunner. Mundo took advantage and got two before going for the End of the World — but Mack got his knees up. Taya came in and distracted Mack so Mundo could win with a sunset flip bomb to the floor onto chairs.

Matt Striker said that Cueto has an Earth-shattering announcement and he said that things like Dario’s Dial of Doom and the Battle of the Bulls have kept Lucha Underground unpredictable and violent.

Cueto said that he’s the reason for it and that the office should say Lucha Libre Genius and he has new imaginative concepts for Ultima Lucha Tres — including the Cueto Cup!

He took the trophy from Melissa Santos and told her to leave before announcing that 32 luchadores will compete in a tournament for the Cueto Cup, and the winner gets a title shot at Ultima Lucha Tres.

Cueto said that a man will get a shot on that night, but it won’t be Matanza because “two weeks ago” he was beaten up by Mysterio, so Mysterio will face Mundo on the night of the Cueto Cup Finals.

The Reptile Tribe defeated Aerostar, Drago & Fenix

Aerostar began against Pindar, but Pindar used his power to dominate. Pindar went for a dominator, but Aerostar turned it into an armdrag. Vibora hit a pump kick off of a Pindar slingshot. Vibora sent him over with a suplex before Kobra stomped Aero on the floor. Pindar held him up for a powerslam off the top, but it was turned into a rana.

Vibora went to chokeslam Fenix off the apron, but got a tombstone on the floor instead. Drago misted Aerostar and Pindar hit a cutter, then they held him up so Drago could pin Aerostar with a splash off the top.

Kobra chained him up to remind everyone that this may have been done as an ultimatum — so it’s not quite a full heel turn.

Mandel was in Mundo’s locker room after he showered and Taya told Mundo that he’ll have to defend against Mysterio. Mandel was told to warm up the car — Mundo needs to get to his dojo ASAP. Mundo said he’s scared and she told him to put some pants on. He had the best line of the season with, “No time for pants!”

Catrina led Mil Muertes down to the ring to battle Prince Puma.

Prince Puma defeated Mil Muertes in a Boyle Heights street fight

Puma rushed him and attacked from behind with a running dropkick. Puma hit a big flip dive to a giant “Puma” chant. He set up a table, but ended up eating a spear through it immediately.

Muertes threw him into some chairs before punching and chopping away. A DDT on the floor led to Muertes getting more weapons and then fighting with street signs. Puma laid him out with a DDT and then hit a 450 off the apron. They fought up through the fans and Puma kicked away to avoid being thrown off the steps.

Muertes beat him with a shoe before fireman’s carrying him down the steps and landing a TKO. Puma tossed a trash can at Muertes before kicking away at him in the crowd and then getting tossed off the banister. Muertes tossed him into Cueto’s office, where he was polishing his trophy.

Puma used a wrench to knock Muertes down. Muertes leered at Vampiro before torturing Puma more with lariats in the corner.  Muertes hit a spinning uranage for two. Puma then landed a series of trash can lid shots before a Van Daminator with the can lid. He set Muertes up in the corner for a spinning Van Terminator for a near fall.

The 630 senton hit, but Catrina attacked him with the stone, so Vampiro gave Puma a brick, which he used to beat Muertes after blocking a spear with it.

Lucha Underground results: Mundo and The Mack go All Night Long

A recap of season three showed Johnny Mundo winning the Lucha Underground title and The Mack earning a title shot by winning a multi-man match. They got into a fight on the last show before the mid-season break, bringing us to tonight’s All Night Long ironman match.

Metalache played us in with a pleasant mix of guitars and violins. Melissa Santos hyped up this being a one-match show, and we’ll go all night long! The Mack was out first, followed by Mundo.

Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo defeated The Mack in an All Night Long match to retain his title

Vampiro and Matt Striker compared the various signature moves of the two wrestlers, with Striker finding the longest way possible to say “stunner.” Mack slugged away to start, so Mundo used his agility to slink out and in the ring for a sunset flip for two.

Mundo hit Moonlight Drive for two before Vampiro talked about “the big Mack.” Mack went for a superplex, but Mundo slugged away before using his mobility to trip Mack up and get the first fall with the End of the World.

Mundo used a variety of flips but ate a uranage for two. Mundo recovered and sent him down for a Sick Kick to the chest. Mundo landed the Flying Chuck, but took too long for the End of the World, so Mack tried for a schoolboy only to have that countered. Mundo got a cradle and used the ropes to score another fall.

Vampiro pointed out that the second referee should have caught Mundo, while Striker said it’s due to the ref being near Dario Cueto’s office. Mack hit a flip dive, leading to Mundo trying to escape, but landing hard on the apron. Mack tossed him in for two. Mack hit a giant exploder and an Alpha Bomb to earn a pinfall — Mundo is still up two falls to one.

Mundo lured Mack in with a fake neck injury to attack the throat with a choke. They exchanged slugs on their knees before Mack landed a headbutt and a sick chop. Mundo connected with a C4 for a close count. He went up top but ate a super exploder from Mack.

Mundo recovered with a shot to the eye and hit a sick flying corkscrew dive off the top to the floor. Mundo claimed an injury, but Mack didn’t believe it and threw him back in. The trainer came out and they prepared to strap him to a backboard before a break.

They put a splint on Mundo’s ankle and Mack hugged him, then Mundo hit him with a DDT on the stretcher and got a pin. He hopped around and did jumping jacks. Mack and Mundo brawled outside and in the crowd with the backboard. Mack slammed him on the backboard before surfing him down the steps. Okay, that was crazy and awesome.

After this craziness, Mundo got flipped onto his face on the backboard. Mack hit a stunner and Mundo leapt high in the air to give Mack a fall. Mack was down by one fall. Mundo fled before Mack followed — however, Mundo was just under the ring. It was revealed that Mack was chasing PJ Black in disguise, then Mundo caned Mack. Son of Havoc came down to beat up both guys with kendo sticks.

Havoc knocked on Cueto’s office to give something to Mack. Cueto gave him water, but the fans demanded beer, so he grabbed some of their sponsored brew to power up Mack. Mack caned Mundo and Black before Havoc set up a pair of tables.

The heels got the lead for a bit before Mundo ordered the band to play victory music for him. Sexy Star dove off of the bandstand after playing the maracas, leading to one of the funniest calls in the show’s history: “I didn’t know Sexy Star knew how to play maracas!”

Mack hit a Greetings From Asbury Park off the apron through the tables for a win to even the score.

Mack and Mundo traded a trio of dead weight two counts. Mundo brought a table into the ring, then Mack brought a ladder. Five minutes remained in the match as Mundo set up the ladder in the corner. Mundo hit a flapjack on the ladder for two, but an End of the World on the ladder missed.

Mack set up a ladder and chopped Mundo on it before laying him on a table. Ricky Mandell came down and is now the biggest Johnny Mundo fan, so he prevented Mack from climbing. Mack hit a High Fly Flow through the table off the ladder, but time expired at 2.5!

Striker said that everything that Mack went through was for this, and he may not have credibility, but he’s a fan. Mundo was announced as champion, but Cueto said there must be a winner — and next week, it will be restarted with the first fall winning.

Mack laid Mundo out with a stunner and held the title high. He didn’t win it tonight, but he could next week, and he came off like such a star.

Final thoughts —

This was an outstanding match and the best performance Willie Mack has had in the promotion so far. The use of Mandell came out of nowhere, but it never hurts for the heel champion to have another goon in his group.

They formatted it perfectly as well, with Mack having an hour-long match with a lot of smoke and mirrors that were new and a lot of fun to see play out. If there’s a such thing as a star-making match in one night in Lucha Underground, this was it.

John Morrison’s five-year ride on ‘Boone: The Bounty Hunter’

Five years is a long time in the world of professional wrestling. In Hollywood, it can go by in an expensive flash. Just ask John Hennigan (aka John Morrison/Johnny Mundo), whose five-year journey to get his film Boone: The Bounty Hunter made has finally reached the celebration point.

“The original idea came in 2012, and the concept was that I wanted a reason to do parkour in a movie that wasn’t running away,” said Hennigan of the film, which also stars Spencer Grammer, Osric Chau and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. “And then I was like, let’s get a bounty hunter who does parkour to chase people. Then, maybe it’s a TV bounty hunter, so he’s got a reason to do all the flashy stuff. And everything spun off of that.

“We had four writers on this project, but I came up with the concept in 2012 and have been working on it since then. From starting to write it, to revising it, to shooting a trailer, to trying to find money to not finding money (laughs), to then finding a way to get the movie made, which is me paying for it personally.”

Whatever it took to get it done, Hennigan was willing to do it. The result is a throwback to films that not only delivered the oohs and aahs when it came to the action sequences and fight scenes, but that had a sense of humor as well.

“I wanted to do something that would encapsulate my sweet spot, so to speak, which is action, comedy and looking for a reluctant hero / lovable loser type, but set in a world where the stakes become real,” he said. “The tone of Boone walks the line that I’ve been able to find most enjoyable when I’m watching movies and I think it’s what I’m best at.”

It’s also not a lark for the former WWE star and current Lucha Underground wrestler Hennigan. Even though he’s happy that his current schedule allows him to expand his film career, he’s busier than ever on the indie wrestling scene as well.

“This is my dual life going forward, and having the opportunity to do both is so important to me,” he said. “I’ve done maybe 15 movies and eight or ten TV shows. I love the acting stuff, but there’s no feeling like professional wrestling. The instant reaction you get from an audience in front of a live crowd is different than on film and television. And the adrenaline you get from walking out into an arena full of people is a feeling that I don’t want to give up, ever, if I don’t have to. I’d like to continue wrestling for as long as I can, There’s nothing else like it. I loved it when I was a kid, and I still love it now.”

And now with the Lucha Underground shooting schedule allowing him to get an “offseason,” he can split his time, something that would be impossible if he was still a member of the WWE roster.

“That was something that appealed to me a great deal about Lucha Underground,” he said. “One, it’s in L.A., which I love. Two, there’s an offseason, which I needed to shoot and complete Boone. I couldn’t have done this movie on the road schedule of a WWE superstar. Plus, I learned a lot about storytelling and acting from being a part of Lucha Underground. The way we shoot the backstage vignettes is just like how you would shoot a TV show or a movie. You shoot coverage, closes, wide shots and it’s why it looks cinematic.”

Yet as the 37-year-old points out, everything — whether in the ring or on the big screen — all comes down to story, and he admits that he owes plenty to his former boss for that.

“I was into filmmaking before I started wrestling, so the idea of this movie was to tell a story, and you can’t just have action for no reason,” Hennigan said. “Vince McMahon explains wrestling matches and promos as stories. They’re all stories, and his version of what a good match is is a hot start, you take the audience for a ride and then you have a big finish and leave the audience talking. And the finish doesn’t always have to be an amazing, uplifting finish, because stories don’t all have happy endings.

“Taking that to heart and using what I learned from my career in professional wrestling is that you need to have some part of this movie that people watching can identify with. Which is why there has to be a story. This character Boone the Bounty Hunter has to be someone that’s relatable to the audience or they’re not gonna care about it. And taking that into consideration was super important. Otherwise you have a movie with no heart, and there are too many of those around these days.”

Hennigan’s film has heart. But just by hearing the tone of his voice change, it’s clear that his heart is still between the ropes, and always will be.

“Independent wrestling is on fire right now, and it’s a really good time to be a pro wrestler,” he said. “The amount of respect and understanding that wrestling fans have for wrestling as an art is at an all-time high and I feel lucky to be in the business right now. And I plan on wrestling until the wheels fall off.”

Boone: The Bounty Hunter hits VOD formats on May 9th, followed by an exclusive Walmart DVD release on June 6th.

Lucha Underground results: Johnny Mundo takes on The Mack

Main image: @LuchaElRey

The Battle of the Bulls tournament is recapped, as is the debut of the White Rabbit Tribe. Sexy Star’s fear of spiders is showcased, and Kobra Moon’s kidnapping of Drago is shown too.

Mil Muertes asks how Prince Puma is alive and Catrina tells him that it was Vampiro and his dark magic. In order to get to Puma, he’ll have to take out Vampiro. This seems to excite Muertes, so Vampiro had better watch out. Catrina walks backstage and Jeremiah Crane tells her that he beat Muertes — the man she loves. She tells him that she doesn’t love Muertes before Crane buries his head in his hands.

Metalachi plays us in while Matt Striker runs down the card. It will be Johnny Mundo vs. The Mack for the title tonight. Our first match sees Mariposa vs. Sexy Star, while Striker comes up with 5,000 ridiculous sayings to describe her. Striker says this is their first one-on-one encounter since the No Mas match last season — adding a sense of importance to this while also reminding us that they have been feuding forever.

Sexy Star defeated Mariposa

Star does a variety of flying mares — giving her the diverse moveset of a wrestling bear. I doubt they could’ve done a running rana like she did though. She dives onto Mariposa on the floor, but going to the floor backfires on Star as she gets tossed into the barricade and then swung several times into the announce table. That draws the first “holy sh*t” chant of the evening.

Mariposa takes a long time to set up the Butterfly Effect, so Star counters and lands some chops. Mariposa’s Samoan drop gets two. Mariposa locks on a kneebar, but Star gets the ropes. Star avoids a moonsault and a superplex before double stomping her and winning.

Marty the Moth comes in and consoles Mariposa — before throttling her and hitting a violent chokeslam. Well, that was unexpected. Mascarita Sagrada meets with the White Rabbit Tribe. Paul London calls Sagrada their God — so he calls them crazy.

The Rabbit Tribe comes down and dances around Melissa Santos. They face Kobra Moon’s team of herself, Pindar, and Vibora. A giant Luchasaurus chant breaks out while she drags Drago out on a chain. Vibora is Luchasaurus, while Pindar is the guy in the giant lizard mask and bodysuit.

Pindar, Drago & Vibora defeated The White Rabbit Tribe

Kobra makes Drago take her place. Marisuerte attacks Pindar, before Drago comes in and battles the guy in the checkerboard get-up. The Tribe dances around Drago before he runs away and tags in Vibora, while Striker talks about vibration sensitivity. Vibora double chokeslams the Tribe before Pindar attacks London with many chokes.

Drago tags in and eats a stereo basement dropkick from the Tribe that gets two. The Tribe teases a coast-to-coast dropkick before Marisuerte hops off and just dropkicks him in the corner. Pindar hits a sit-out chokeslam to Marisuerte. London jumps into the arms of Luchasaurus before the tombstone piledriver takes him out. Drago comes in and takes out Saltador with the blockbuster DDT. Fenix and Aerostar make the save for Drago, who is trapped by the chain. They free Drago, but she begs him to leave with them.

Sexy Star meets with The Mack for another wacky meeting. He doesn’t want her coming out there and he wants to prove that he can win the title on his own. She is kind of okay with this, but clearly annoyed.

The Mack meets with Dario Cueto, who tells him that The Mack’s match isn’t for a title — but the winner gets to pick the stipulation for the title match. Mack asks him if he’s a betting man — Dario says he is, and that he should always bet on Mack. Dario looks on with pride at the violence he knows will transpire.

Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo defeated The Mack in a non-title match

Mundo beats Mack down with forearms and kicks while Vampiro says that these shots won’t really hurt Mack as he’s used to street fights and being beaten with batons. They play cat and mouse and Mack turns this game against Mundo after a bird flip leads to him sending Mundo onto the floor. Mundo tosses him into the barricade and hits a flying Chuck kick mid-ring. The End of the World is met with a schoolboy for two.

Mack sends Mundo down and hits a People’s Elbow along with a dab for two. Mack Samoan drops Mundo, kips up, and hits a moonsault for two. A pop-up forearm hits Mundo for two as he uses the ropes to stay alive in the match. Mack hits an apron Codebreaker for two. Mack hits a huge powerbomb, but only gets two.

Mundo’s goons come down, distract Mack, and lead to a low blow cradle for the win. The goons hold Mack down while Mundo tells him he sucks and couldn’t even last 10 minutes — so he’ll take him to slam town all night long. So we’ve got an iron man match for the title, which seems like a perfect way to make Mundo eat his words. They beat up Mack and pose over him.

Mil Muertes comes down and beats up Vampiro. Vampiro does as much as he can to sell without bumping before Puma comes down to save him. Vampiro takes a very safe flatliner while telling Puma to let it happen. Puma stands over the body of yet another fallen master and will certainly battle Muertes once again to try and atone for this beating.

Solid show overall — nothing amazing, but the main event was very good and set up a title match quite well.

Lucha Underground results: Johnny Mundo battles Sexy Star in a cage

Last week, we got a tease of dissension between El Dragon Azteca Jr. and Rey Mysterio. The Battle of the Bulls tournament continued and set up the elimination match finals tonight. Sexy Star will take on Johnny Mundo inside of a cage for the Lucha Underground Championship in tonight’s main event.

Show Recap —

A recap of the Battle of the Bulls tournament starts things off while we see Kobra Moon’s goon squad beat up Drago. Sexy Star’s title win and loss to Mundo are shown, alongside her win against PJ Black ensuring her a rematch.

Matt Striker and Vampiro hype up the title match being inside a cage and possibly leading to the first ever two-time LU Champion. Striker uses a lot of words to describe The Mack, while Vampiro just says that he’s big and here to kick ass. Striker says his description was for his grandmother — who Vamp then tries to hit on.

The Mack defeated PJ Black, Jeremiah Crane, and Cage in the Battle of the Bulls tournament finals

Cage tosses guys into each other before chucking Mack with a German suplex. PJ gets a double stomp to the back and teams with Crane for a pump kick party on Cage. Mack moonsaults onto PJ and Crane for two.

Crane and Mack get into a slap fight. Mack flip dives onto Crane on the floor. Cage dives on that pile, and then PJ hits a moonsault off the top rope to the floor onto them. PJ goes for an apron PK, but gets caught and smashed face-first into the apron from an electric chair position.

Mack goes for a double impact onto Cage, but Cage catches PJ off the top with a Rick Steiner-esque mid-move powerslam. It wasn’t as smooth, but it still got two. Crane gets a really loose choke, but gets tossed off and Cage then hits the F5 on PJ. Texano interferes and hits Cage with the bull rope before everyone hits their finisher and Cage is taken out.

Crane stacks his foes in the corner and hits a double face wash. Crane hits a sick neckbreaker on PJ, then fights up top with The Mack. They fight down and a Batista bomb gets two. Crane locks on a submission, but PJ cradles him for a near fall.

An emerald frosion is hit with Striker paying tribute to Mitsuharu Misawa, and then a super stunner hits to give Mack the win over Crane. PJ and Mack chop away at one another before Mack hits a stunner and wins.

Aerostar and Fenix look for Drago in the bathroom before Kobra Moon and her goons attack them. One of them is Pindar. Luchasaurus spins him into a mirror, resulting in a car crash sound effect for some reason. Another wacky ninja fight scene breaks out and everyone hits a series of badly-synced attacks. Kobra Moon’s gang leaves them laying.

Sexy Star and The Mack have another of their weird multi-language conversations where everyone speaks a different language and understands the other perfectly. He tells her to take the title from Mundo — but says he’ll take it from her. A spider is shown in her locker room.

Dario Cueto talks to Crane, who gets a match and grabs something that he left in Dario’s office ceiling when he was a kid. He tells Catrina and says that he’ll face Mil Muertes and wish he’d have died in the earthquake. So now he’s a ghost or a spirit or a time-traveler or something.

Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo defeated Sexy Star in a steel cage match to retain his title

Sexy Star inspired a generation according to Striker, and her Rita Repulsa staff is apparently a reason why. Mundo kicks her in the stomach, so she kicks his legs. Mundo shoves her into the cage before they get into a race alongside the top ropes, which Star wins with a rana off the top. Mundo hits a spinning Irish curse for two. Mundo hits a series of running fireman’s carry slams into the cage. Mundo goes to escape, so Star hops up and powerbombs him for two.

They fight up top and Star slaps Mundo down. She gives her signal for love and then hits a crossbody off the top of the cage onto Mundo for a near fall. She tries to climb over the top but Mundo attacks her leg. They fight on top of the cage and then on the top rope, where Star lands a series of chops and kicks.

Mundo responds by removing Star’s mask to give him time to escape while she puts it back on. I loved that finish and the match itself wasn’t too bad. As Mundo leaves, Mack hits a stunner on the steps.

Drago is shown being chained up in Kobra Moon’s throne room. She tells him that Pindar will fetch a small meal and let him feast on the bones — but he says he’d rather starve. She leaves and he unleashes a fireball in this bizarre Mortal Kombat-meets-Power Rangers storyline.

Lucha Underground results: Sexy Star vs. Johnny Mundo

A recap of Matanza’s wrath over the past year is shown, followed by the saga of Dante Fox and Killshot and the debut of the Black Lotus Tribe. Johnny Mundo’s road to the title is shown while Rey Mysterio’s elimination of Matanza leads to Sexy Star’s win.

Paul London talks about the White Rabbit showing him his destiny. He engages in a kung fu battle with goons and a graphic says “they’re here!” Matt Striker talks about this being a special show because Sexy Star is the champion and tonight, she’ll face Mundo for the title.

The Rabbit Tribe comes out to get a Trios Championship shot. Vampiro talks about how drugs have led to great war and how the Rabbit Tribe is like that and takes peyote.

Trios Champions Aerostar, Drago & Fenix defeated The Rabbit Tribe

London attacks Fenix, and Saltador, the checkerboard-suited member, does a flip dive. Striker says that they got an instant title shot due to London’s reputation. Vampiro says he’ll take Striker on a “trip” one day. Mala Suerte teases a coast-to-coast kick, but they just run across the ring for a dropkick. Aerostar does a pop-up dropkick to Drago for some reason and Fenix avoids a kick.

Saltador misses a corner kick, and they high five while Striker makes a Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure joke. Aerostar armdrags Fenix into the corner-mounted heels. Kobra Moon stalks Drago from atop Dario’s office. Fenix avoids a back suplex and turns it into a victory roll with a bridge to pin Saltador. Kobra Moon cuts an angry promo on Drago and calls herself his queen.

Sexy Star and The Mack chat. Mack is a horrible actor even acting proud of his friend winning the title. Mack says that he can’t let Mundo and his goons steal the title, so he’s in her corner — but she wants to prove it’s not a fluke. Dante Fox comes out and Striker makes a reference to Clerks saying that Fox told him he “wasn’t even supposed to be here today.” Killshot is called deadly and gets a big chant.

Dante Fox defeated Killshot

Killshot avoids a punch and tackles Fox down. The bitter rivals engage in a tumbling exchange to determine the better fighter. Fox hits a suicide dive to the floor and then lands a second one. A third is met with a high kick. Fox hits a slick spinning kick before doing a shooting star press off the apron! Absolutely none of this fits his character, but it makes for a fun match.

Vampiro says that SWAT training led him to be able to do that. Fox eats a neckbreaker on the apron, which gets a “This is awesome” chant. A springboard cutter hits Killshot for two. Killshot avoids the Fox Catcher brainbuster before they break out a New Japan mid-ring forearm exchange.

Fox hits a flying kick and then a pump kick before eating a shot and then landing an elbow. Killshot has a bicep slicer on, but Fox escapes. Killshot and Fox get into a skirmish on the top rope before Killshot hits a death valley bomb on the apron off the top! Well, that was insane and the double stomp only gets two.

Killshot goes for the One Winged Angel, but a cradle counter gets two. A pop-up C4 hits and leads to the Fox Catcher and the win! This was a lot of fun, if a bit ridiculous at times. This was Fox’s singles debut, making him one of the few people to actually win in a debut match.

Mundo complains to Dario Cueto about Angelico jumping him. Dario says that if he’d known Angelico was in the building, he’d have put him in Aztec Warfare. Mundo tells Dario that he’s got his agent/lawyer on the case to ensure his restraining order on Angelico is carried out. Tonight, he’s going to focus on winning the title. Mundo and Dario call each other jerks while wacky sitcom music plays.

Black Lotus comes back into Dario’s office and tells Dario that she and the Triad want Pentagon Dark. Dario was impressed by them and Black Lotus tells him they want to show Pentagon about why their tribe is so feared.

Dario makes Pentagon face the Black Lotus Tribe next week in a gauntlet match and it won’t end until he has faced every member. Sexy Star comes down wearing her title and now brandishing a ridiculous-looking staff with a mask on it.

Johnny Mundo defeated Lucha Underground Champion Sexy Star to win the title

They face off and Star rolls around a bit. Mundo locks her in a surfboard and curb stomps her for two. Mundo kicks each leg out from under her leading to a split and then landing a PK. Mundo locks on a LeBell Lock while Striker talks about how Mundo beat Star for the GOTG Title.

Mundo locks her in a tree of woe before landing round kicks to the stomach. She lands some short-range strikes in the corner before hitting a bronco buster.

Mundo low blows her, slams her, and prepares for the End of the World. She lands a series of dropkicks before hitting an X Factor for two. Mundo lands a neckbreaker for two before locking on a sleeper. She chops her way out of trouble and a lung blower gets two. She tells Mundo to grow a pair before he hits a Russian legsweep for two.

Star avoids a Flying Chuck and hits a double stomp for a near fall. Mundo snaps the arm over the rope before stomping away. She avoids a baseball slide and kicks him into the barricade before diving onto him with a seated senton. Mundo grabs a fan’s crutch but Star kicks him and uses it.

Star helps the fan and but the fan hits her with knucks. Mundo tosses her in and hits the End of the World to win the title. Taya reveals herself as the “fan” and the show ends. Solid episode.

Lucha Underground San Diego, CA, live results: Angelico vs. Johnny Mundo street fight

Submitted by reader Daniel Short

Lucha Underground held the third and final stop of their first En Vivo tour in the San Diego, CA area, specifically the Northern County city of Escondido during the Escondido Tamale Festival.

As with all En Vivo shows, this was free, but they limited to how many could be seated, which I counted to be around 450-500. Everyone else crowded around one of two areas between the bleachers to watch. To give some folks a chance to be seated, they split the event into two shows with everyone having to clear out and lining back up after the first show. They ran thirty minutes behind due to some mud pits around the area holding up the process of transporting the ring gear as well as some traffic issues for the talent.

There were cameras out and about, so it’s possible the event was being taped for future TV airings, which was further suggested with how it seemed that a storyline or two were being introduced or played out.

Show 1 —

– Paul London defeated Mil Muertes and Bestia 666

London was clean shaven compared to his having full facial hair in his vignettes. Catrina was not present to accompany Muertes to the ring. Much of the match was Muertes being the dominant monster with London and Bestia occasionally utilizing double teaming effectively. The finish saw London’s Rabbit Tribe (later identified as Mala Suerte and Saltador) running in to hold Muertes at bay as London won after preventing Bestia from doing a Superplex attempt by pushing him off and then hitting the Shooting Star Press for the pin.

Muertes started beating everyone down afterwards when King Cuerno ran in and laid Muertes out. Cuerno took the mic to announce that he was back and told Muertes that it was not over between the two of them.

– Drago defeated Aerostar

In keeping with what’s aired so far on TV, Aerostar and Drago are the Trios Champions with Fenix, though this was not mentioned. They had a fairly competitive match with each one taking their time in hitting specialty moves. Drago pinned Aerostar with a crucifix hold and hooking Aerostar’s ankles to prevent any kick out leverage. They shook hands afterwards.

– King Cuerno defeated The Mack in a 2/3 falls match

This was the main event of the first show — a solid match where the two also took their time in building things up. Mack won the first fall after hitting the Stunner. King Cuerno won the second fall with a Frankensteiner into a pin. The finish saw Cuerno hit Mack with a tope suicida and then the Thrill of the Hunt for the win. Muertes immediately hit the ring afterwards and laid out Cuerno with the Flatliner. He took the mic and agreed that it wasn’t over between the two of them, rather it was far from over.

Show 2 —

– Ivelisse defeated Jack Evans

Evans took the mic after introductions, claiming this was put together because he was out to prove he was the true “baddest bitch in the building” even if the event was outdoors. Jack got the heat throughout for “manhandling” Ivelisse for the most part. Ivelisse eventually won the match with the Desert Eagle.

Afterwards, Taya and Ricky Mandel hit the ring to beat on Ivelisse before Paul London’s Rabbit Tribe hit the ring for the unexpected save. Vampiro then came out with the mic, claiming that Dario Cueto left him in charge for the day’s event after immediately booked a trios match between everyone present.

– The Rabbit Tribe (Mala Suerte and Saltador) and Ivelisse defeated The Worldwide Underground (Jack Evans and Taya) and Ricky Mandel

The match was designed more as a slight showcase for the Rabbit Tribe. Saltador got some nice reactions for making numerous physical innuendos by positioning himself behind Taya, constantly causing her to squirm. The rudos got the heat on Saltador before he made the hot tag to Ivelisse and eventually all six going at it, with the big spot being Taya hitting a top rope splash onto all four guys on the floor.

The finish saw Taya attempting a superplex on Ivelisse when Paul London came out and distracted her with carrots, allowing for Ivelisse to hit a top rope crossbody followed by superkicks from each of the Rabbit Tribe and then a grounded rolling roundhouse kick to the head from Ivelisse. The Rabbit Tribe piled onto Taya for the pin to Ivelisse’s initial confusion before she eventually jumped on and they got the win. Ivelisse still looked confused, but nonetheless joined along when London and the Rabbit Tribe celebrated with carrots and throwing them out to the crowd.

– Angelico defeated Johnny Mundo in a San Diego street fight.

In keeping with where the storylines are at on TV, Mundo was the reigning Gift of the Gods Champion and proclaimed the title was not on the line. He slightly flubbed on the mic, saying the belt was behind a “bulletploof” case at the temple, causing Melissa to giggle. Mundo tried to get on her for this, claiming there was nothing funny about “bulletploof”, leading to the fans chanting the word and making Mundo himself break into a chuckle. Melissa had to take a moment to compose herself before introducing Angelico.

The final main event was a San Diego Street fight, which was named as such probably due to the presence of pinatas set up around ringside, two on ring posts and a table with more at the DJ stand. They had a regular match for a few minutes before finally heading out of the ring and looking for plunder to hit each other with. After a while, the fans chanted for someone to use the pinatas and Angelico obliged. There indeed was candy inside, which kids ran to grab despite officials trying to stop them from doing so while the match was still going and Angelico throwing them out to the crowd when able. He was also throwing tamales at Mundo, who tried to bat them away with a chair before getting hit by a few and selling them like he was getting hit with clotheslines.

Taya came out to help Mundo, leading to him powerbombing Angelico from the DJ stand through the table. They did their version of the Magic Killer for a near fall, causing Johnny to beat up referee Marty Elias. This led to all the talent coming out one by one to get involved, eventually just brawling with each other, though Paul London and the Rabbit Tribe just walked around eating carrots. Another near fall led to Johnny beating up Elias again, but then he snapped and started kicking all the present members of the Worldwide Underground and Ricky Mandel, causing the fans to just lose it.

Vampiro and an official tried to calm Elias down, leading him to duck and the official accidentally decking Vampiro, Elias kicked him, and then let the momentum carry him into hitting a top rope splash on the Worldwide Underground and Mandel. The fans were loving every minute of this. The finish saw Mundo eventually bring a trash can into the ring, hitting Angelico over the head with it. He attempted to hit a moonsault press with it, but Angelico moved and Mundo ended up slamming himself onto the trash can. Angelico picked him up and did a running powerbomb through a table that had been set up to finally get the pin.

**********

This was a fantastic event from start to finish. A couple botches here and there, but they did little to dampen the enjoyment everyone was having. A great main event capped things off with a finish that was awesome to witness live. If they do more En Vivo events, it is highly recommended to attend.

They had a booth during the festival showing off the Lucha Underground Championship and the Gift of the Gods Championship belts in a display case and mannequins of classic lucha attire before a brief historical timeline of lucha libre and Lucha Underground history. There also appeared to be a spot where fans got to print their own posters.

Lucha Underground results: Johnny Mundo vs. Sexy Star

The best-of-five series between Cage and Texano is recapped — which is good, since I completely forgot about that. Johnny Mundo’s ever-present need for the Lucha Underground Championship is also recapped, and we see Jeremiah and Ivelisse bicker from a few weeks ago.

Sexy Star comes into Dario Cueto’s office and says she wants a match with Matanza next week. He tells her that she still has to beat Mundo, and she says it’s a tune-up match. Her friends the trios champs are banned from ringside, and Dario says that, as his mother would attest, women don’t fare well against Matanza.

Marty the Moth creeps up behind Melissa Santos before his match against Ivelisse.

Marty the Moth defeated Ivelisse

Ivelisse kicks Marty’s legs out in the corner, but he gets two off a powerslam. Marty gets a seated full nelson and then lifts her up high. Ivelisse gets two off a victory roll and hits a knee strike for two. She hits a KENTA combo before going for a running code red, but locks on a guillotine choke instead. Marty hits a spinebuster and spikes her on her head to win.

Jeremiah pump kicks Marty and takes Mariposa out too. Ivelisse comes back in and brawls with Mariposa while Jeremiah knees Marty, but he escapes. He tells her she just needs a hug — pissing her off more.

A man in a white suit says that he followed the white rabbit and it led him back to his tribe.

Jeremiah argues with Ivelisse about coming in, and he has accepted Dario’s offer to compete. He loves the idea of getting paid to hurt people and the couple that slays together, stays together. Dario goes into a limo and talks about having a perfect host body — and it could be the winner of the Ultimate Opportunity tournament.

Texano defeated Cage in a best-of-five series match

Texano is down 0-2 in the series, while Cage is, in fact, still a machine. A back and forth slugfest starts before Texano gets two off of a spinebuster. Cage kicks him off a dive while the fans slap the barricades to the Terminator theme. Cage is tossed into the chairs like a bowling ball according to Matt Striker. Cage suplexes Texano on the floor. Cage goes back in, but Texano hits a sunset bomb to the floor!

Texano misses a beautiful somersault senton, but a follow up lariat only gets two. Cage fallaway slams him with a no-look toss and then superplexes him. Cage hits a pumphandle X-Factor for two. Cage goes up, but gets caught and hit with a rana off the top for two. Cage hits a discus lariat before a buckle bomb and an F5 for a near fall, but Texano wins off a flash cradle.

In his office, Dario stares lustfully at his shiny silver treasure chest. Rey Mysterio Jr. interrupts him and tells him that there may not be much time for him in the Temple because he needs to end things with Chavo Guerrero and he’s tired of Chavo’s bullsh*t. He doesn’t want to leave LU, but he needs to end Chavo’s career. Dario hopes that Mysterio enjoys it as much as he will.

Johnny Mundo and Sexy Star come out for their match. During the break, Mundo advertises the Lucha Underground En Vivo house shows.

Johnny Mundo defeated Sexy Star to win the Gift of the Gods Championship

Mundo outwrestles Star on the mat and then kicks her butt, legs, and butt again. He tosses her into the buckle before locking on a crossface chickenwing. She elbows out, but gets seated up top. She goes for a sunset bomb, but gets backdropped.

Star recovers and sends Mundo flying across the ring. She runs around awkwardly before going for a monkey flip that Mundo flips out of. Star hits a codebreaker and lungblower for two. Mundo spins her into the ref, but the ref misses her cradle and he kicks out at two.

Mundo accidentally spears Marty when Star moves. She chokes Mundo out, but the ref is still down. Mundo’s goons come down and take her out. They hold her up for a wacky double slam and a new ref comes in to count, but she kicks out!

Jack Evans and PJ Black invite the second ref to a superkick party because of that. They go to Pillmanize Star’s neck during an End of the World, but The Mack returns! Fenix, Aerostar, and Drago were banned — but not him. Stunners for everyone!

Mundo kicks out. He tosses Star around, but the End of the World misses. Marty takes the chair out, but Mundo lands a brass knuckle shot to the jaw to win the Gift of the Gods Championship and get his second title in the company.

Vampiro tells Prince Puma that beating Mil Muertes was a great first step — but he’s not done with Muertes yet. He still needs to get revenge for Konnan, but while Vampiro hated Konnan, he didn’t kill him — that was Muertes. Puma needs to find his power and send Muertes to an early grave as well. Vampiro hated Konnan, but respected Puma from day one.

Lucha Underground results: Rey Mysterio kung fu; pizza bites; Trios title match

The show starts with a recap of the Dial of Doom and Pentagon Dark vs. Rey Mysterio, with Dragon Azteca Jr making the save. The Sexy Star beating from the Worldwide Underground closes things out before we go to the Temple. Rey and Azteca have a kung fu battle with Rey arguing before Chavo comes in and armbars Azteca.

Chavo threatens to take over Azteca’s training. Dario’s Dial of Doom returns to give Matanza another victim. The Mack gets the shot and a big pop while Dario hypes up “the Return of the Mack”.

Lucha Underground Champion Matanza vs. The Mack

Mack fights with Matanza in the crowd and stunners him on the floor. Mack gets a lot of time to shine here with a variety of kicks and even a running rana, but Matanza’s power proves to be too much. A deadlift German allows Matanza to dominate, and he’s now added a variety of corner kicks to further massacre opponents. Mack wins a chop battle and gets a flip dive, but a frog splash meets the knees and the Wrath of the Gods spell the end for The Mack.

*********

A Famous B ad airs and pisses off Son of Havoc, and Mascarita Sagrada. They’re eating Pizza Bites in Havoc’s mother’s basement, and she tells him to not call her Mrs. Havoc. This was something else. Mundo storms into Dario’s office and wants a title shot. Dario offers a trios title shot, but he wants an LU Title shot and doesn’t get it – so he retreats to his dojo. Taya says she’s up for the trios match and offers to find someone else.

**********

Texano vs. Cage – Ultimate Opportunity Match

Texano is mid-ring to face Cage. Rumors have it that Cage is not a man and is instead a machine. Dario comes out and talks about how they were in the unique opportunity tournament – but they fell short. As result, this won’t be for a unique opportunity – it will be for the ULTIMATE opportunity, and he will reveal that to the winner.

Texano and Cage have a super fun match alternating between a variety of dives and stiff shots. Cage hits a high kick and a flip dive. Cage focuses on the neck, resulting in big “Texano” chants. Cage locks on Billy Goat’s Curse, but Texano gets the ropes while Striker says that is the one thing that separated pro wrestling from Greco Roman wrestling.

Texano recovers enough to get an ankle lock that Cage escapes, but Texno lands a series of lariats and a spinkick. Cage gets a series of lariats and a calf kick before a spinebuster gets 2. Texano gets a cradle for 2, but a death valley driver gets 2 for Cage. Cage counters a rainmaker with a discus lariat for the win. Dario says the ultimate opportunity will be given to the winner…of the now Best of Five series – so Cage is up 1-0.

Fenix, Drago, and Aerostar face the Worldwide Underground of Taya, Jack Evans, and PJ Black in our main event.

*********

Dario unloads a box of Famous B merch before finding a series of photos. Dragon Azteca Jr. comes in and wants a match with Pentagon – but Dario wants him to have a rematch against Black Lotus, but she’s in Hong Kong. Dario tells him that he’ll give him the match with Pentagon. Ricky Mandel comes in asking when his next match will be and he spots the photos. Dario gives them to him. Chavo comes in and gets brushed off.

**********

Trios Champions Aerostar, Drago, and Fenix vs. Taya, PJ Black, and Jack Evans

The trios champs come down before the heels and Striker says this must be under Freebird rules.  Jack uses a bit of Mortal Kombat movements according to Vamp before everyone else tags themselves in. Taya starts with Drago and they have an impressive little sequence won by Taya with an armdrag. Drago tags Aerostar in, but Jack won’t tag Taya, so she tags PJ in. PJ lands a slick spinning brainbuster for 2.

Fenix gets tagged in and runs wild before Jack comes in to tag Taya in before a wacky kung fu movie exchange. Jack flips in before Drago comes in and hits the flying finger gun to the ass. PJ is tagged in harshly, so when PJ needs one, he does the same thing to Jack. Jack pouts on the floor before PJ eats a ton of moves in the corner.

Taya dives onto Fenix and Drago. PJ goes up for a springboard, but eats a rana by Aerostar! A springboard codebreaker gets the win for the champions.

The Worldwide Underground destroys the champions with the aid of Mundo, but Sexy Star comes down to even up the odds.

*********

Dario talks to Rey about Dragon Azteca Jr. wanting a match with Pentagon – but he nixed that and made Azteca vs. Chavo with the winner facing Pentagon. Dario says he wants this to be fair, so Rey will be the referee.

Solid show – nothing amazing, but they moved things along nicely.

Lucha Underground results: Johnny Mundo vs. Fenix; Prince Puma vs. Dragon Azteca Jr.

The road to Ultima Lucha Dos has been paved over the past few weeks, and with that show one week away, the card should take shape tonight. We see the death and rebirth of Mil Muertes and last week’s Rey vs. Puma challenge. Vamp says that he’s half out of his mind with excitement over Ultima Lucha Dos.

Striker says that the LU version of the Super Friends of Drago, Fenix, and Aerostar face Mundo, PJ Black, and Jack Evans tonight while Prince Puma faces his other former Trios Championship partner El Dragon Azteca. Next week’s show is run down and we’ll get Mil Muertes vs. King Cuerno to start things off tonight. Cuerno flexes his pecs to the “Cuerno, Cuerno!” chant. Mil shoves the cameraman away and we’re underway.

King Cuerno vs. Mil Muertes

Mil drops down and goes for a tiltawhirl, but Mil hits a big kick to the gut and a spear to the spine. Mil stomps the groinal region, or as Vamp says “he stomped him right in the balls!”. Cuerno hits a boot, but eats a big lariat for 2. Mil hits a huge swinging chokeslam ala The Giant for 2. Mil is sent to the floor and eats a baseball slide and then the Arrow of Death hits! Ref is taken out with it and Cuerno grabs a chair and hits him in the head, but it’s no-sold and Mil punches his lights out!

Mil slams the back with a chair and he sets the chair up in the corner. Cuerno avoids a corner spear and Mil hits the chair and eats a schoolboy with the ropes held to give Cuerno the win. This was short, but fantastic while it lasted.

Dario meets with Taya and Ivelisse and puts them over for being tough – but says there can only be one baddest bitch in the building. At Ultima Lucha, they will determine who deserves that title most. Catrina walks in and wishes Ivie luck and she wants a rematch against Cuerno for the show. He says that she took over his temple, took over his office, tried to destroy his brother and says that their issue over a dented casket involves a funeral home – not him.

Catrina says they want a death match and Dario says he hates her – but she knows what to say to excite him, so it’s on and then she disappears. Puma walks down and then Rey brings Azteca down with him.

Prince Puma vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr.

Puma chops him and we get a tumbling exchange before a sunset flip leads to spinning and a legsweep gets 1. Back and forth armdrags lead a staredown. They shake, but Puma won’t let go – so Azteca hits a pair of chops and slaps him. Puma slides over Azteca, who hops up and kicks him before eating a snake eyes against the post.

This is a crazy-fast match – holy smokes! Puma gets a dueling chant and lands a European uppercut before eating a pop-up springboard rana. Puma gets crotched and chops him on top before hitting a springboard rana for 2. Puma hits a forearm shiver and then eats a running forearm from Azteca. Azteca hits a DDTJ for 2.

They exchange waistlocks and Puma traps him in the corner and hits a pop-up blue thunder bomb into a Northern Lights and then into a brainbuster for 2! Puma goes for the 630, but takes too long and Azteca crotches him up top. Azteca hits a super victory roll for 2! Azteca flows through a missed 450 but eats a belly to belly into the buckle! A spinning Benadryller gets 2!

A corner hesitation dropkick hits for Puma, leading to the 630 as he stares at Rey and gets the win. This was fantastic and easily Azteca’s best match to date. Puma says that will be Rey next week and slaps him.

Cage, Texano, The Mack, and Son of Havoc are mid-ring with Dario. He says that he feels like a kid on Christmas and it’s time for one of them to get a gift from him for Ultima Lucha Dos. He says they will be entered into the Unique Opportunity Tournament for a Unique Opportunity because they have a shot at a unique opportunity! The winner gets a Unique Opportunity and he tells them to rest up because their match is next! Or not….they brawl and Cage hits a big lariat on Texano on the apron.

This was poorly explained, but amusing thanks to Dario. Ultima Lucha Dos’ card is recapped, with everything run through so far along with the Gift of the Gods Title match. Matanza’s path of rage is recapped and we see a rundown of his issues with Pentagon Jr. Fenix comes out in new orange and black gear that looks slick. Mundo comes out and Vamp marks out over Mundo’s jacket and talks about how he helped Mundo put on his headband.

Fenix vs. Johnny Mundo

Fenix slaps Mundo and gets a standing moonsault for 1. Mundo’s basement knee strike gets 2 before a set of mounted forearms. Fenix machine gun chops him before cutting him out and then running chopping him. Fenix runs into a C4 for 2. Mundo chinlocks him, but eats knees. Mundo hits a hard spinebuster for 2. Mundo grinds his boot into the face – blocking the ref’s view from Taya choking him.

Fenix flips onto them while a dueling Lucha/Let’s Go Fenix chant breaks out. Fenix hits a diving chop to the fallen Mundo before hitting a big boot and a chest chop before a jumping Yakuza kick in the corner! A sunset flip powerbomb gets 2 for Fenix!

Taya holds Fenix up and he gets kicked – but lands on his feet before a Moonlight Drive gets 2. Fenix avoids the End of the World and lands a palm strike before a C4 off the top – but Taya has the ref distracted. Mundo grabs a Trios Title hits Fenix with it for the win – marking the first time this decade that a belt shot ends a match. I love that – it’s such a cliche for a nearfall now, and I like seeing it actually get a win so it matters again.

PJ and Evans come down to celebrate and play air guitar while Vamp describes Taya in a fairly unfattering manner. Drago and Aerostar come down, and then Ivie comes down to battle Taya. The faces clear the ring and we hear that Ultima Lucha Dos will be a three week event that starts next week.

Lucha Underground results: Pentagon Jr & Johnny Mundo thrive in Six to Survive

The show begins with a recap of all the cop drama that has happened throughout season two. We see the death and resurrection of Mil Muertes and then Pentagon Jr’s return last week leading to his team entering into tonight’s feature content – the first-ever Six to Survive match where the winner gets a shot at Matanza Cueto’s Lucha Underground Title at Ultima Lucha Dos.

The Voodoo Glow Skulls play us into the show and Vamp and Striker run down that the main event will be an elimination match.

Pentagon Jr. vs. King Cuerno vs. Ivelisse vs. Taya vs. Johnny Mundo vs. Fenix – Six to Survive

Vamp says Pentagon’s recovery is nothing short of a miracle and he has no idea how he did it. Cuerno starts things off with a slick sliding schoolboy that gets 2 on Pentagon. Ivie gets double-teamed by Taya and Mundo and kicks out of the Moonlight Drive. Fenix superkicks Johnny and then kicks Taya right in the ass. Fenix and Pentagon double team Pentagon with a wassup spot – only with a double stomp instead of a headbutt. Cuerno lands a running deja vu DDT to Pentagon.

Mundo hits a flip dive onto Pentagon on the floor. Ivie gets picked up and tossed out onto Mundo and Pentagon by Cuerno and Fenix! Somersault superman punch by Fenix to Cuerno up top! Cuerno hits a rewind rana.Cuerno goes for the Thrill of the Hunt, but Muertes runs down and spears him to his doom before landing a nasty powerbomb to Cuerno. Mundo’s DILLIGAF face is perfect and he beats Cuerno with the End of the World.

Taya jumps Fenix and pounds away, before Ivie comes in and clubs away at her. Ivie kicks Fenix’s legs and then lands some kneeling kicks. Outside the ring, Pentagon kicks Taya’s legs out from under her. Fenix won’t fight Ivie, so she opts to chop and kick him. Ivie hits a high kick to Pentagon. Ivie charges in at Taya, but she moves and Mundo kicks Ivie. Ivie ranas Mundo off the middle rope and hits a high kick to Taya for 2. Taya hits a front slam, but a moonsault misses. Ivie goes for a Code Red, but Taya powers her into a Northern Lights and a double stomp for the pin.

Taya misses a corner dropkick and Pentagon goes after her in the corner and hits Shattered Dreams. Mundo gets hits with Snake Eyes into the post on the floor. Pentagon lands the nasty shush chop on Taya, or as Vamp puts it “he just chopped the bitch out of the biatch!” Pentagon lands another kick to Taya – only now it’s another ass-centric one. Mundo and Pentagon trade mid-ring forearms. Taya holds Pentagon for a Flying Chuck. Fenix hits a superkick and then a calf kick to Mundo.

Taya hits a rana and a corkscrew DDT-ish thing on Pentagon. Northern lights into the double stomp only gets 2 on Fenix. Mundo hits the basement knee strike on Fenix for 2. Fenix attacks Taya and Mundo goes after him. Shotgun knees to Pentagon by Taya. Fenix kicks Mundo in the gut, then Taya in the face, then Mundo in the face. Pentagon hits the package piledriver on Taya to eliminate her. Mundo consoles Taya on the floor before coming back in to fight.

Vamp puts over every single person here as someone who is tough enough to win – but Mundo isn’t scarred enough to beat them in a sheer war. Everyone chops everyone else a billion times. A billion may be a low estimate. Mundo lands a nice spinebuster and gets 2. Fenix goes for a handspring off the ropes, but gets stopped and a Batista bomb gets 2. They fight to the floor and Pentagon Jr. hits a flip dive amid a “lucha!” chant.

Striker talks about how everyone is going for strikes and palm strikes to avoid breaking their hands. Mundo hits a huge dive to the floor and nearly knocks over the camera man. Mundo tosses Fenix into the ring and lands a sloppy standing End of the World for 2. Standing C4 hits Fenix for 2. Pentagon hoists Johnny up top where Fenix hits a double stomp up top. Fenix and Pentagon pin Johnny underneath a wacky cradle combination.

Pentagon and Fenix face off to close out Six to Survive. Pentagon hits a flapjack and then the Haas of Pain. Fenix locks on a scorpion deathlock tequila sunrise! Pentagon locks on a double-trap backbreacker, but Fenix gets a Low Ki-style dragon sleeper. Fenix gets a run-up armdrag that sends Pentagon to the floor. Fenix hits a double-jump corkscrew dive on the floor! Fenix throws him in and gets 2.

Pentagon tosses Fenix into the buckle and hits a running punt to the gut. Fenix catches him for an Alabama Slam, but Pentagon turns into a Mexican Destroyer for 2. Pentagon chops him on the rope, but eats a palm strike. Fenix fires up before flipping a whole bunch and hitting a super rana for 2. Pentagon hits two Slingblades, but Fenix won’t fall. Fenix kicks him to prevent a third. Fenix misses a double stomp off the top on the apron and eats a superkick.

Fenix is sent to the floor and eats a Mexican Destroyer on the floor! Fenix is tossed in for another Mexican Destroyer, but Fenix counters it into a Dudebuster for 2! They’re each fighting off of their knees with slaps and meet face to face to fight more on their feet. Fenix swats him down with a hard slap to the face, and Fenix kicks him, but Pentagon superkicks him! Package piledriver gets the win for Pentagon Jr.!

The camera pans to Vampiro looking absolutely shocked. Vamp tells Matt to shut up and let him think so he can enjoy the moment. Matanza comes out on the steps and stares down Pentagon Jr. Pentagon Jr. tells Dario that he’ll break every bone in Matanza’s body, and Dario’s as well because he is Pentagon Jr. and he has zero fear!. Pentagon Jr. is an amazing promo and he says next to nothing in English. His passion says more than words ever could.

This was an excellent match and between this, Aztec Warfare, and the All Night Long match, Lucha Underground really has mastered the art of making one match shows compelling from start to finish.
