NJPW creating new title to replace IWGP US/UK Championship

Say goodbye to the IWGP United States/United Kingdom Heavyweight Championship.

NJPW chairman Naoki Sugabayashi revealed at a press conference Monday that the IWGP US/UK title will be replaced by a new championship that the promotion is creating. A Google translation of Sugabayashi’s comments reads:

Regarding the IWGP US belt, we will establish a new championship. It is true that fans were confused as to whether it was IWGP US or UK, so we have created a new championship. We will announce the details later.

The announcement comes after an angle at Saturday’s Power Struggle event where David Finlay destroyed the title belts that represented the US/UK Championship, setting up a triple threat match at Wrestle Kingdom 18 between current title holder Will Ospreay, Finlay, and Jon Moxley.

Ospreay won the United States Championship from Kenny Omega at Forbidden Door this past June, then rebranded the title the UK Championship.

Sugabayashi’s comments came at a presser that officially announced four new matches for Wrestle Kingdom 18, as well as an earlier start time.

A total of five bouts are currently official for the show:

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18, Thursday, January 4, 2:30 a.m. Eastern time on NJPW World —

  • IWGP World Heavyweight Champion SANADA defends against G1 winner Tetsuya Naito
  • Bryan Danielson vs. Kazuchika Okada
  • IWGP United States/United Kingdom Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay defends against Jon Moxley & David Finlay in a three-way
  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi defends against El Desperado
  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Bullet Club War Dogs (Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney) defend against United Empire Catch 2/2 (TJP & Francesco Akira)

US title number one contender’s tournament finals set for NJPW Dominion

The IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship number one contender’s tournament finals are set for NJPW Dominion on June 4.

Will Ospreay defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi at Sunday’s Resurgence pay-per-view to advance to the tournament finals at Dominion set for Sunday, June 4 in Osaka. Ospreay will now face Lance Archer at Dominion, with the winner set to challenge Kenny Omega for the IWGP US title at a later date, most likely AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in Toronto on Sunday, June 25.

Ospreay pinned Tanahashi after hitting a Storm Breaker to advance to the finals. The bout was just the second career singles meeting between Ospreay and Tanahashi, with the other taking place in August 2019 during the G1 Climax tournament. Ospreay also won that bout.

The updated Dominion lineup:

NJPW Dominion, Sunday, June 4, 3 a.m. Eastern time on NJPW World —

  • IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: SANADA defends against Yota Tsuji
  • NEVER Openweight Championship: David Finlay defends against El Phantasmo
  • IWGP US title number one contender’s tournament finals: Will Ospreay vs. Lance Archer
  • Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) vs. House of Torture (EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi) for the vacant IWGP Tag Team & NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships

Lance Archer advances in NJPW IWGP US title contender’s tournament

Lance Archer has secured a spot in the finals of NJPW’s IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship number one contender’s tournament.

Archer defeated Fred Rosser in a street fight at Sunday’s NJPW Collision in Philadelphia event to advance to the tournament finals to be held on June 4 at Dominion.

With an assist from Bullet Club’s Juice Robinson, Archer pinned Rosser after hitting a lariat to earn his spot in the tournament finals. Robinson was originally advertised as Archer’s opponent for the Collision match, but was given a storyline suspension for his actions in a match against Rosser at Saturday’s Capital Collision show, and Rosser was put in the spot instead.

Due to the street fight stipulation, Robinson’s interference did not lead to an Archer disqualification.

After his victory, Archer cut a promo on AEW’s Tony Khan, and IWGP US Champion Kenny Omega, threatening to defeat Omega for the title at Forbidden Door 2 on June 25. It has not officially been announced that Forbidden Door will feature Omega’s next title defense, but that seems to be the direction.

Archer will now face the winner of a scheduled Will Ospreay vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi bout set for NJPW Resurgence on May 21. That bout is in question however, as Tanahashi suffered a broken rib at Saturday’s Capital Collision and was pulled from his scheduled main event match at Collision in Philadelphia.

It was announced Sunday that Ospreay is now medically cleared to compete after missing a month of action with a shoulder injury.

Regardless, Archer will wrestle in the tournament finals at NJPW Dominion in Osaka-Jo Hall on Sunday, June 4.

Shota Umino returns to NJPW, challenging for US title at Historic X-Over

Shota Umino has returned.

Branded as “Roughneck,” the NJPW star made his way back to the company’s main unit at Saturday’s Battle Autumn in Osaka event, answering an open challenge for an IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship match set for NJPW x STARDOM Historic X-Over on November 20.

After Will Ospreay retained the US title with a win over Tetsuya Naito in the show’s main event, Ospreay issued an open challenge for Historic X-Over. Ospreay referenced “The Forbidden Door,” teasing that a North American talent might answer. After the challenge went seemingly unanswered, Gideon Gray of United Empire cut  a promo, and confetti shot off to celebrate Ospreay’s win.

With the show seemingly over, the lights went out in the arena. A video proclaiming that “Roughneck is coming” played on the video wall, then Umino made his appearance.

Umino attacked Ospreay with a forearm shot, then hit the US champ with a Death Rider in a nod to his former NJPW tag partner Jon Moxley.

Umino posed over Ospreay with the US title belt, seemingly answering the challenge for November 20.

After a stint in the company as a Young Lion, Umino left NJPW on excursion in 2019. He wrestled primarily for RevPro in the United Kingdom in his time away, but also wrestled on NJPW shows in the United States. In addition, he wrestled in a trios bout at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in June of this year.

In other notes from Battle Autumn, FTR retained the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles in a win over Great-O-Khan and Jeff Cobb, TJP and Francesco Akira retained the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles with a win over BUSHI and Titan, Zack Sabre Jr. and Ren Narita advanced to the finals of the IWGP TV title tournament, plus Kazuchika Okada and Tama Tonga defeated Jay White and KENTA in tag team action.

Full results and our report on the show can be found here.

NJPW Burning Spirit notes: Hikuelo, IWGP United States Championship

Some notes from Sunday morning’s NJPW Burning Spirit event in Kobe.

Hikuelo turned on Jay White during Sunday’s show, aligning himself with his brother Tama Tonga. Meanwhile, a match between Zack Sabre Jr. and Tetsuya Naito was set for NJPW Royal Quest, where the winner will face Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Championship.

After Ospreay successfully defended the IWGP United States title against David Finaly, Naito came out and issued a challenge to Ospreay. Before Ospreay could answer, Sabre came out and mentioned that it was him who defeated Ospreay during the New Japan Cup tournament this year, and therefore he should be champion. Eventually, Sabre figured out a plan without consulting Ospreay where he and Naito would face off at NJPW Royal Quest in London, and the winner would be next to face Ospreay. Ospreay didn’t have a chance to reply as both of his future potential opponents left before he could get a word in.

Earlier in the show, Karl Anderson successfully defended the NEVER Openweight Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi. After the match, Jay White and Doc Gallows jumped Tanahashi. Tama Tonga came to the ring, and soon did his brother, Hikuleo. After Hikuleo saw both Tonga and White in the ring, he chose to help his brother, throwing White into Tonga who delivered a gun stun. The segment ended with Tonga posing with the IWGP World Heavyweight title, while Hikuelo posed with the NEVER Openweight title.

NJPW strips Juice Robinson of IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship

NJPW has stripped Juice Robinson of the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship, and a new title holder will be decided Sunday at Dominion.

NJPW announced on Friday night that Robinson was not coming to Japan to defend the US title as scheduled on Sunday, he would be stripped, and the scheduled Robinson vs. SANADA vs. Will Ospreay three-way at Dominion will now be a SANADA vs. Ospreay singles match, with the winner crowned the new United States Champion.

NJPW stated that Robinson “reneged on [his] agreement” to defend the title in Osaka on Sunday. Their statement reads:

On Friday June 9, New Japan Pro-Wrestling was in receipt of a video from Juice Robinson, in which he stated that he would not be present for his IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship three way match at Dominion.

In fact, Robinson had initially agreed to the championship match Sunday in Osaka Jo Hall. Having now reneged on this agreement and refusing to attend in Osaka, NJPW is hereby stripping Robinson of his champion status and is demanding the return of the championship belt currently in his possession.

As a result of the championship vacancy, the previously scheduled IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship three way is now a singles match that will determine a new champion.

The card change is as follows:

9th Match- IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Three Way

Juice Robinson vs SANADA vs Will Ospreay ->

9th Match- IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship

SANADA vs Will Ospreay

New Japan Pro-Wrestling apologises to fans who were looking forward to seeing Juice wrestle, as well as for the confusion and inconvenience caused.

With Robinson not making public statements outside of kayfabe promos, it remains unclear how much of this matter is storyline and how much is legitimate.

Robinson missed an NJPW June 3 event where he was scheduled for a non-title match against Tomoaki Honma. It was announced at that show that Robinson was suffering from appendicitis. The manner in which that announcement was made indicated that Robinson’s ailment was legitimate.

On Thursday, Robinson released an in-character promo via NJPW claiming that he would not be at Dominion due to still suffering from appendicitis, but was still advertised for the event for another 24 hours, indicating that perhaps the ailment was storyline.

To further muddy the waters, Robinson appeared on the April 13 Wrestling Observer Live and indicated that his NJPW career had come to an end after his contract had expired. He then returned to the company at Wrestling Dontaku on May 1 and turned heel, joining Bullet Club. That would indicate that his Observer Live appearance was in-character.

Robinson went on to win the IWGP United States title at Capital Collision in Washington DC on May 14.

Here is the updated card for Dominion:

NJPW Dominion, Sunday, June 12, 1 a.m. Eastern time on NJPW World —

  • IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship: Will Ospreay vs. SANADA

  • KOPW 2022: Shingo Takagi (c) vs. Taichi
  • AEW interim World Championship eliminator match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Hirooki Goto

  • Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato vs. Aaron Henare, TJP & Francesco Akira

Juice Robinson wins IWGP United States title at NJPW Capital Collision

Juice Robinson is the new IWGP United States Champion.

The main event of tonight’s Capital Collision event saw Robinson pin Will Ospreay in a four-way match that also featured champion Hiroshi Tanahashi and Jon Moxley. The finish of the match had Robinson pinning Ospreay with a torture rack into a sitout slam. Despite Ospreay getting his foot under the rope, the referee counted to three anyway, giving Robinson his third IWGP United States title.

This marks the end of Tanahashi’s run with the title after only 13 days. He defeated Tomohiro Ishii back at Wrestling Dontaku on May 1 to win the vacant title after SANADA was forced to forfeit due to injury.

Tonight’s match originally was meant to be a singles match between Tanahashi and Moxley. But after Tanahashi won the title, it was changed to a four-way title match after Robinson attacked Tanahashi at Dontaku, turning heel and joining the Bullet Club. Ospreay, who was originally scheduled to meet Tanahashi at Dontaku for the vacant title, issued a challenge soon after.

Four-way IWGP United States title match announced for NJPW Capital Collision

A four-way match for the IWGP United States Championship has been announced for NJPW’s Capital Collision event on May 14 in Washington, D.C..

Hiroshi Tanahashi will defend the United States title against Juice Robinson, Will Ospreay, and Jon Moxley following events that took place at Windy City Riot and Wrestling Dontaku.

Ospreay, who was set to face Tanahashi at Wrestling Dontaku until being sidelined with COVID-19, challenged Tanahashi on social media.

At the end of Windy City Riot last month, Moxley challenged Tanahashi, saying he would face Tanahashi if he had to drag him to D.C. by his ponytail. Robinson returned to Japan at Wrestling Dontaku, attacking Tanahashi after he won the championship by defeating Tomohiro Ishii. Robinson was then shown wearing the Bullet Club logo, confirming he had joined the group.

Here are the matches announced so far for Capital Collision:

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Will Ospreay vs. Jon Moxley vs. Juice Robinson for the IWGP United States title
  • Kazuchika Okada & Trent Beretta vs. Jay White & Hikuleo
  • Eddie Kingston vs. Tomohiro Ishii
  • Brody King vs. Minoru Suzuki

SANADA vacates IWGP United States title at NJPW Hyper Battle

SANADA vacated the IWGP United States Championship during tonight’s NJPW Hyper Battle event, setting up the next two challengers in the process.

SANADA came to the ring following intermission and said he wouldn’t know when he would be able to return, and thus had to vacate the championship. He suggested that the former champion, Hiroshi Tanahashi, reclaim the title. Will Ospreay came out and said that since he was the one that “caved in” SANADA’s face, he should get the championship. Tanahashi came out and suggested to Ospreay that they fight for the title in Fukuoka, or Wrestling Dontaku 2022 on May 1. Ospreay left, angry as Tanahashi told SANADA that he would be waiting for him once he recovers.

It was announced on March 18 that SANADA would be out of action after suffering a fractured left orbital bone in his New Japan Cup match against Will Ospreay. Ospreay ended up defeating SANADA by referee stoppage to advance.

New champions crowned at NJPW New Year’s Golden Series

New champions were crowned at today’s NJPW New Year’s Golden Series event in Hokkaido.

In the show’s main event, SANADA defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to win the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. SANADA used a clutch hold to pin Tanahashi and capture his first singles title in NJPW.

Tanahashi’s second reign with the US title ends at 45 days, and without a single successful defense.

Elsewhere on the card, Ryusuke Taguchi and Master Wato won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship, defeating Robbie Eagles & Tiger Mask, El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo in a four-way.

For Wato, this is his first NJPW title win. For Taguchi, this is his seventh IWGP Junior Tag title win, and he holds the distinction of having the 69th IWGP Jr. Tag title reign, as well as the 69th IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship reign.

Eagles and Tiger’s first reign as a duo ends at 116 days, with one successful defense.

In the show’s other title match, Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI made a successful defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles, defeating EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi to retain.

NJPW New Year’s Golden Series live results: Tanahashi vs. SANADA

Three titles are on the line tonight on the penultimate night of NJPW’s New Year’s Golden Series tour.

In the main event, Hiroshi Tanahashi will defend the IWGP United States Heavyweight title against SANADA. Tanahashi is in the midst of his second reign with the US belt, defeating KENTA at Wrestle Kingdom in January to kick off his second run.

In the semi-main, Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI will try for their first defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles, facing EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi.

A four-way for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles will take place today, with Robbie Eagles and Tiger Mask defending against Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato, El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo.

The rest of the card:

  • Kazuchika Okada, Satoshi Kojima & Yuji Nagata vs. Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi & Hiromu Takahashi
  • Great-O-Khan vs. Tomoaki Honma
  • Tomohiro Ishii & YOH vs. Dick Togo & SHO
  • Toru Yano & Ryohei Oiwa vs. Minoru Suzuki & Taichi
  • Togi Makabe & Kosei Fujita vs. TAKA Michinoku & DOUKI

Our live coverage begins at 3 a.m. Eastern time.

**********

DOUKI and TAKA Michinoku (Suzuki-gun) defeated Kosei Fujita and Togi Makabe

This was a fine opener.

Fujita opened the match passionately, taking the fight to both his opponents; his eagerness was punished as the Suzuki-gun pair found their footing. DOUKI and TAKA had their way with the young lion, eventually forcing the tag.

Makabe connected with heavy offence after tagging in, successfully fending off both opponents for some time. When Fujita tagged back in, he maintained this momentum, locking DOUKI into a Boston crab, forcing a rope break. An inside cradle nearly left Fujita with the quick win, prompting TAKA to hit the ring. TAKA and DOUKI landed a double kick, and DOUKI secured the DOUKI Chokie to submit Fujita.

Minoru Suzuki and Taichi (Suzuki-gun) defeated Ryohei Oiwa and Toru Yano

This match was quite busy, but somehow they pulled it off. It was silly fun, start to finish, with a decent Taichi/Oiwa match snuck in.

Yano came to the ring pushing his dog cage.

Before the match, Suzuki made the referee do a full frisk of Yano, revealing Yano came to the ring with handcuff keys.

After the referee found Yano’s key, Suzuki rushed him only to find a few more keys hidden in his wrist tape. Then Yano and Suzuki wandered to the outside, where Yano tried rolling Suzuki over with the dog cage (it’s on wheels). Yano missed his target but slammed Suzuki into the cage regardless.

Back inside, Yano smacked Suzuki with a turnbuckle pad only to be slammed into the buckle himself. Yano then patted Suzuki’s head; Suzuki responded by securing a leg lock. Yano managed to reverse the piledriver and tag out, leaving Taichi and Oiwa legal.

Oiwa, try as he might, had little success over Taichi; he even had a significant string of offence, but generally, Taichi was unphased. Taichi tried to lock in a single leg Boston crab, but Yano interrupted. This prompted Suzuki and Yano to continue brawling on the outside. Taichi secured the cobra twist, forcing Oiwa to submit.

While the finishing sequence played out in the ring, Suzuki handcuffed Yano and the referee to the dog cage. Suzuki’s music played him out as Yano and the official awkwardly walked to the back attached to end this spectacle.

YOH and Tomohiro Ishii (CHAOS) defeated SHO and Dick Togo (House of Torture)

This match wasn’t filled with the HoT junk, but it wasn’t particularly good.

YOH started the match by attacking SHO on the outside, prompting a brawl on the floor. Inside the ring, YOH continued his attack. SHO responded by throwing YOH back to the outside. Then the dynamic change as SHO focused Ishii and Togo focused YOH.

Once Togo established control over YOH, SHO tagged back in to choke his former partner with a buckle cover. YOH eventually tagged out, allowing Ishii to run through Togo and SHO. SHO turned things around with a quick knee to the midsection. After Togo tagged in, Ishii landed a suplex, opening the match up for YOH to take control once more.

YOH fell to a double team combination punctuated with a SHO spear. Ishii made the save, however, leading to a CHOAS rally. Ishii landed a sliding lariat, letting YOH tie up Togo in his new leg submission; Togo tapped out immediately after YOH locked in the hold.

Great-O-Khan defeated Tomoaki Honma

I might be crazy, but I quite liked this match. Even though Honma was never beating O-Khan, this match gave me just enough hope to believe it was possible.

O-Khan and Honma went back and forth in the opening moments in a basic wrestling exchange. As things progressed, O-Khan gained mat control, locking in a head-and-arm choke that forced Honma into the ropes. O-Khan then sat on the back of Honma, pressing him into the top turnbuckle to cement his control.

After escaping a stomach claw, Honma landed a DDT. Honma’s follow up consisted of a shoulder tackle, a bulldog, and a KoKeShi attempt; O-Khan avoided the headbutt, resulting in a match reset.

The pair traded strikes, with O-Khan winning out. O-Khan landed a throw and a powerslam for a near fall. O-Khan then landed a few Mongolian chops but was cut off by a rocket, KoKeShi, followed by a falling KoKeShi. Honma climbed to ropes and delivered a rocket KoKeShi from the top for a near fall. Honma landed a lariat; O-Khan kicked out at one. Honma tried for another rocket KoKeShi but was caught by O-Khan. O-Khan transitioned into the eliminator; after landing the move, O-Khan pinned Honma to close the match.

Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi and Tetsuya Naito (Los Ingobernables de Japon) defeated Kazuchika Okada, Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata

Okada and Naito opened the match with a tie-up. Naito used a headlock to take the match to the mat, and Okada responded with a takedown of his own. After the pair established they were on equal footing, they tagged out.

Shingo and Nagata traded blows, as did Hiromu and Nagata. Kojima struck down Hiromu, forcing Hiromu to tag back into Naito. Naito unloaded on Kojima, forcing a reversal followed by a tag back into Okada. Okada and Naito traded forearms before Okada gained control with an air raid crash neckbreaker. Okada landed heavy rain for a near fall. Naito turned things around with a dropkick to Okada’s knee, followed by a neckbreaker of his own. Naito tried for Gloria, but Okada avoided the move, transitioning into the money clip. Naito fought free, resulting in a match reset.

Nagata and Shingo traded strikes again. Nagata landed an exploder and locked in a chinlock, forcing the save. Nagata landed the justice knee and driver for a near fall. Hiromu made the save, prompting Okada to hit the ring. Naito answered, dropping Okada with Destino. Shingo then landed a pair of lariats for another near fall. Shingo closed the match after hitting Nagata with last of the dragon.

Once the match ended, Naito continued to attack Okada ahead of their match tomorrow. Naito then symbolically pinned Okada, Hiromu counted to three and lifted Naito’s hand.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships: Master Wato and Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Robbie Eagles and Tiger Mask (Flying Tiger) (c), El Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori (BULLET CLUB’s Cutest Tag Team), El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru (Suzuki-gun)

This match was always in full gear—absolutely packed full of flying sequences and general insanity.

This match opened chaotically. Suzuki-gun managed to isolate TM, but Bullet Club fought off the Suzuki-gun squad to focus TM themselves. Eagles kind of made the save, occupying the attention of ELP. Wato and Taguchi tried to score a quick pin over TM, prompting Wato and Eagles to trade moves.

Eagles tried for a dive, but Ishimori interrupted him to land a dive of his own. Desperado interrupted Ishimori’s dive to try a dive of his own, but he was interrupted by ELP. ELP and Desperado traded strikes before swapping positions with TM and Taguchi. TM considered a dive but was stopped by Suzuki-gun. Perhaps wisely, Suzuki-gun let TM get in his dive by throwing him through the ropes. Ishimori and Wato also landed their dives soon after. ELP tried for own of his own, but Eagles stopped him with a super rana to the floor.

Flying Tiger isolated Taguchi. TM landed a butterfly suplex from the top, and Eagles landed a 450 for a near fall. TM locked in an armbar that Bullet Club interrupted. Bullet Club landed plenty of double team offence before Kanemaru made the save. Wato dropped Kanemaru with a dropkick. Taguchi dropped everyone in the match with a hip attack before two quick pin attempts from Flying Tiger. Taguchi tried for a pin attempt of his own that everyone broke up. Somehow Taguchi, Wato, and TM were left alone in the ring. Taguchi hoisted up TM, setting Wato up for an assisted facebuster. Taguchi then pinned TM to win the match and become the 69th IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions.

From the beginning of their hunt, Taguchi and Wato wanted these belts just to be the 69th champions; tonight, they accomplished their goal.

IWGP Tag Team Championships: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI (Bishamon) (c) defeated EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi (House Of Torture)

Someone, anyone, please, make this stop.

This match began with HoT jumping Bishamon. Once in the ring, Goto and YH were able to gain some ground, but on the outside, SHO and Togo (who accompanied EVIL and Yujiro to the ring) made things difficult for the champions.

Yujiro and EVIL isolated YH after Togo and SHO beat him with chairs. YH eventually tagged out, letting Goto turn things around for a little while. An exposed buckle and another outside beatdown allowed HoT to retake control. EVIL choked Goto with a shirt for three near falls.

Goto landed a lariat to slow down HoT’s snowballing offence. YH had some successes against Yujiro until Yujiro bit his hand; Yujiro landed a slam for a near fall of his own. YH connected with a pump kick for a quick turnaround, but Togo distracted the referee. Yujiro landed a low blow before bumping the official, letting all four HoT members attack YH. Goto interrupted the beatdown with a stick, buying enough time for the rest of CHAOS to make a save.

Once the referee was standing, YH landed a lariat for a near fall over Yujiro; a GYR yielded another. EVIL stopped all of Bishamon’s offence with a chair shot to YH. Yujiro landed pimp juice for a near fall of his own. Goto then hit the ring, fighting off EVIL and Yujiro. Bishamon landed Shoto and pinned Yujiro to end the match.

After the match, the CHAOS squad posed with the NEVER belts ahead of their match for the titles tomorrow.

IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship: SANADA defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi (c)

I’m generally not a fan of big match SANADA, but there was a lot to like here. Overall, this was a good match with an excellent showing, as always, from Tanashai.

This match opened with an extended feeling-out process. The alternating control in the prolonged kickoff sequence continued on the outside. SANADA gained the first lead following a paradise lock/dropkick combination. As a result, SANADA took the match to the mat, slowly wearing down the defending champion.

Tanahashi began to turn things around following a leaping forearm. A senton from the second rope left Tanahashi with a two count and a strong lead over the challenger. Tanahashi then turned his attention to the leg of SANADA. After a dropkick to the leg and a dragonscrew, Tanahashi tied SANADA into the paradise lock. Tanahashi sent SANADA to the outside before jumping to the floor, delivering a picture-perfect crossbody. As SANADA tried to make his way back in the ring, Tanahashi continued to focus the leg. SANADA escaped the Texas cloverleaf once, only to be locked in the move again moments later.

After escaping Texas cloverleaf a second time, SANADA responded with skull end. Tanahashi slipped free, lading a sling blade followed by high fly flow; SANADA blocked the move with the knee Tanahashi focused earlier in the match, sending both men into deep pain. Through the pain, SANADA locked skull end in once more. Once Tanahashi was lifeless, SANADA tried for a moonsault; Tanahashi blocked it with his knees.

The pair went back and forth, trying for a skull end/dragon sleeper, respectively. Once the submission seemed unlikely, Tanahashi transitioned into a triad of twist and shouts followed by a sling blade. Tanahashi went for high fly flow, but SANADA rolled through. SANADA landed TKO and a moonsault but missed the second moonsault attempt. Tanahashi capitalised with a dragonscrew.

Once the pair was back standing, they traded passionate strikes. SANADA dropped Tanahashi and tried following with a TKO; Tanahashi escaped, landing a suplex and a sling blade before trying another high fly flow. SANADA rolled out of the way and bridged into a leg clutch pin. Tanahashi failed to kick out, leaving SANADA with the win. SANADA is the US Champion.

After his title win, SANADA cut a promo, offering Tanahashi a rematch and saying thanks to the fans. Lance Archer and Jon Moxley were mentioned by commentary as potential challengers.

New champions crowned at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 16 night two

New champions were crowned today on night two of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 16.

Hiroshi Tanahashi regained the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship, defeating KENTA in a wild no-DQ match after hitting a High Fly Flow off a ladder through a table. KENTA was split open earlier in the bout after falling from the ladder and apparently hitting his face on a trashcan.

Tanahashi ends KENTA’s first reign with the US title at 59 days, and begins his second reign with the belt.

Earlier in the show, Minoru Suzuki became the provisional KOPW 2022, defeating Toru Yano, CIMA and Chase Owens in a four-way to determine the first trophy holder of the year.

Three championships were retained on today’s show, as Kazuchika Okada defeated Will Ospreay in the main event to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight title, and EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi and SHO defeated Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI and YOH to retain the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team titles. Ryusuke Taguchi’s quest to begin the 69th IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship reign with Rocky Romero fell short in the main card opener, as Robbie Eagles and Tiger Mask retained those belts.

KENTA vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi IWGP US title no DQ match set in NJPW

KENTA’s first challenger for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship has been decided.

At today’s World Tag League and Best of the Super Juniors finals event, KENTA delivered a video message to Hiroshi Tanahashi, accepting the terms of a challenge issued by Tana.

KENTA said that the match would only take place if NJPW’s ace agreed to a no DQ match. KENTA said that he wanted vengeance after Tanahashi put him through a table in their US title match at Power Struggle on November 6.

Tanahashi responded by accepting KENTA’s terms. No date has been set for the match.

Tanahashi won the United States title at NJPW Resurgence in Los Angeles in August. He successfully defended the title against Kota Ibushi at Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome in September, then dropped the belt to KENTA at Power Struggle.

The no DQ match will be KENTA’s first defense in his first reign with the title.

New champions crowned at NJPW Power Struggle

Multiple titles changed hands at today’s NJPW Power Struggle event in Osaka.

KENTA defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi after sending him into an exposed turnbuckle and hitting a Go To Sleep to win the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. KENTA takes home the US title for the first time, plus captures his first title in NJPW since losing the NEVER Openweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom in January 2020. Tanahashi’s first reign with the US title ends after 84 days and a single successful defense.

A new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion was crowned, as El Desperado defeated Robbie Eagles by submission to win the title. Desperado is now a two-time IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion. Eagles sees his first reign with the Junior title ended after 104 days and one successful defense.

The NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship also switched, as EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi and SHO defeated Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI, ending the longest NEVER Six-Man reign in history. Goto, Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI’s run with the titles ends at 454 days and nine successful defenses.

Two champions did retain their titles at Power Struggle.

Shingo Takagi defeated Zack Sabre Jr. in the main event to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. After his win, Kazuchika Okada came to the ring and engaged in a back-and-forth with Shingo on the microphone. Okada retained his right to challenge Shingo at Wrestle Kingdom after defeating Tama Tonga earlier in the show.

Hiroshi Tanahashi wins IWGP US Championship at NJPW Resurgence

Hiroshi Tanahashi has now won every major heavyweight title in NJPW history.

Tanahashi defeated Lance Archer to win the IWGP United States Championship in the main event of NJPW Resurgence Saturday night to claim the title for the first time.

Tanahashi used two High Fly Flows to put Archer away in 19:26 and claim the US title. Following the match, Archer asked Tanahashi to give him a rematch in AEW. Tanahashi appeared to accept the proposition, but no date was announced for the potential AEW debut of Tanahashi.

Jon Moxley sat ringside for the Archer vs. Tanahashi main event. Moxley is a former two-time IWGP US Champion. His most recent reign with the title ended on the July 21 edition of AEW Dynamite, where he lost to Archer in a Texas death match.

The victory adds the US title to a list of championship wins that includes eight IWGP Heavyweight Championships, two IWGP Intercontinental Championships, a NEVER Openweight Championship, three IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, three G1 Climax tournament victories, two New Japan Cups, plus three NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team title reigns.
