Becky Lynch calls MJF ‘just the sweetest boy’ after working on Happy Gilmore 2

Becky Lynch thinks MJF is “just the sweetest boy.”

Lynch and MJF both appear in Netflix’s sequel to Happy Gilmore. Lynch plays an Irish golfer named Flex, while MJF portrays one of Happy Gilmore’s sons.

During an interview with Vulture that was published Thursday, April 16, Lynch was asked for her thoughts on the now-former AEW World Champion and what it was like working on the movie with him. Lynch said she initially expected MJF to be similar to his wrestling persona, but ultimately realized that was not the case.

Lynch said:

“I think he’s so great. I love him. And honestly, I’ll be honest, I thought he’d be an a–h— like his character. He’s so good at his character that I was like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna hate this guy.’ And he’s just the sweetest boy. He’s so nice and he was so great and he was such a great conversation. It was such a great chat and we bonded instantly and I love him.

You know I totally bought the act, and now I’m killing the act, so sorry. But no, I think he’s great and he’s wonderful and he was so great in the movie. He’s fantastic. He’s just a fantastic little speaker and actor and he’s also so young still. So I’m so very excited to see where his career goes.”

Up next, Lynch will challenge AJ Lee for the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship on night one of WrestleMania 42 on Saturday. As for MJF, he is coming off losing the AEW World Championship to Darby Allin in the main event of Wednesday’s Dynamite from Everett, Washington.

Lynch’s full interview is available below, with the video queued to her comments about MJF.

  • The Hollywood Reporter has a Q&A with the director of WWE Unreal, Chris Weaver. When asked how real he felt the show ended up being, he said: “So that’s a longwinded way of saying, I don’t know, but my impression was we’re getting the authentic side of these people. Listen, there’s a lot of cameras around. They’re shooting — you know, WWE has different groups shooting — we’re shooting. There’s the network cameras for the broadcast. And [the wrestlers] would often say, “Am I supposed to be in character?” [And we were like], “No, this is NFL Films for the Netflix show.” And they go, “Got it.” And so a lot of them would ask and want to be sure, and that was another indicator to me that we’re seeing Phil Brooks or, you know, whatever their real names are in each case, but I think we got the most authentic side of a lot of these people.”

Adam Sandler on working with MJF: ‘I love my fake son’

Adam Sandler loves his fake son.

In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ stars Adam Sandler and Julie Bowen both praised MJF, who has a major part in the film as their son.

“Funny as hell,” Sandler said, with Bowen agreeing. “What a great kid. Love him. Family member.”

Bowen noted that he had left filming to do a match and came back bruised, and was worried for him.

“He went and had a match and came back the next day. It was at the Garden, I think…he had some extra bruises. That kid is jacked and he’s a stud. I’m happy to say he’s my fake son forever. I love my fake son. I love him in real life,” Sandler said.

WWE star Becky Lynch is also in the film, which is scheduled to be released on July 25 on Netflix.

MJF played Lance Von Erich in a part that was largely cut from the film ‘The Iron Claw’ in 2023. In AEW, he has continued to build momentum by aligning himself with The Hurt Syndicate and winning the Casino Battle Royal at All In last weekend to secure a future AEW World Championship match.

Nikki Bella on filming Happy Gilmore 2: ‘We just could not stop crying laughing’

Nikki Bella says she had a lot of fun filming Happy Gilmore 2.

Bella appears as a spectator at a golf event alongside Becky Lynch in a trailer for the film released at the end of May. She revealed on her podcast last month that she filmed her scenes last fall and in a recent interview with E! called working with Adam Sandler “the greatest thing ever.”

Bella said:

“Oh my gosh, the greatest thing ever. He is absolutely amazing. This set was so much fun. I mean, I’ve always believed laughter is the best medicine, but it really is. And you know how sometimes when people do sequels, you’re like, ‘It’s never as good.’ This is going to be even better than the first and I’m not even saying that cause I’m a part of it, but we just could not stop crying laughing on set.”

Adam just makes it really comfortable for everyone. I’ve never been in that big of a feature film. And he’s so hands-on every scene with everybody on how you can make every scene even better. And it was so much fun.

It’s not clear if Bella’s role in the film is just a cameo or if she plays a larger part. She mentioned that the film takes a direction that hasn’t been revealed in any of the trailers and said fans will be surprised.

“I’m so excited for everyone to see it cause so much of the movie they haven’t even teased yet in the trailers.

“There is a massive part that people are going to be obsessed with – and that’s kind of where I’m at – that they haven’t even teased that I think is so cool.”

MJF also appears in the movie, playing one of Gilmore’s sons, Gordie, who is said to have inherited his father’s love of hockey. Happy Gilmore 2 premieres on Netflix on July 25.

Nikki Bella’s full interview with E! is available here.

Netflix Tudum notes: WWE stars promote ‘WWE Unreal’

WWE stars attended Saturday’s Netflix Tadum event, promoting Raw and WWE’s upcoming reality show.

Netflix’s special promoting upcoming television and movie shows on the platform featured a segment featuring Rhea Ripley, CM Punk, Liv Morgan, Raquel Rodriguez, Dominik Mysterio, and The New Day. Punk took time to promote WWE’s upcoming new reality show on the platform “WWE: Unreal,” saying that their world could be stranger than “Stranger Things.”

Morgan then brought up the angle last year involving Mysterio turning on Ripley and aligning himself with Morgan. Ripley and Morgan exchanged words before Punk interjected. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods then introduced fans to the trailer for the next season of “One Piece.”

“WWE: Unreal” is set to premiere on Netflix this summer, with the most recent trailer dropping during WrestleMania weekend.

Later in the show, the trailer was introduced for “Happy Gilmore 2,” which releases on July 25. Both MJF and Becky Lynch appear in the new trailer, with MJF having a major part in the film as Gilmore’s son.

Becky Lynch talks WWE return, working with MJF on ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Becky Lynch almost returned at the Royal Rumble.

In an interview with Variety, Lynch talked about taking time off last year and how she almost returned at the Royal Rumble, but ended up waiting until WrestleMania 41 due to a skin condition.

“I took what I thought was going to be three months off during the summer, when my contract came up,” Lynch said. “I was like, ‘Okay, seems like a good time to take a little break, get some stuff done.’ Then other things came up – I was filming ‘Star Trek,’ and then ‘Happy Gilmore.’ There was talk [of a return] around Rumble time, but then at the last minute, I got a skin condition. The next big event was WrestleMania, so it seemed to make sense, especially if I could take Bayley out of the mix and ruin her dreams. It felt doubly brilliant.”

In addition to Star Wars: Starfleet Academy, Lynch also makes an appareance in ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Lynch said she did end up meeting the other pro wrestler on the set: AEW star MJF.

“I did. You know, a very nice boy. Great chats,” she said. “Of course, he knows he’d lose at [a promo battle], but we had great chats. Unfortunately, it was way before this happened, but I feel like he would completely agree with everything that I’m saying about Lyra.”

MJF responded to her comments on social media: “Agree with Becks fully on Lyra, she seems like a horrible person and clearly a gross poor. Enjoyed my time with “the man” on set. A very nice girl and an upstanding citizen. However….. not too sure about her thoughts on a potential promo battle.”

Lynch is set to face Lyra Valkyria for the Women’s Intercontinental title during Saturday’s WWE Backlash event.

AEW star MJF joins cast of Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Former AEW World Champion MJF has booked a role in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore” sequel.

Deadline reported today that MJF has joined the cast of “Happy Gilmore 2,” the follow-up to Sandler’s 1996 comedy classic. The movie stars Sandler, Julie Bowen, and Christopher McDonald and is being filmed for Netflix.

“Details as to [MJF’s] role is under wraps, as is the sequel’s plot,” Deadline wrote. “Others on board include Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald, who reprise their respective roles as Virginia Venit and Shooter McGavin, the love interest and pro golfer antagonist of Adam Sandler’s title character. Recently, Sandler has also teased that [NFL star] Travis Kelce is on board for a cameo, with production now underway and Bad Bunny has also joined the cast.”

PWInsider reports that MJF will be playing the character Gordie in the film, who is one of Happy Gilmore’s sons.

It had been known that MJF was away from AEW programing due to filming for a movie. He defeated Daniel Garcia at All Out on September 7 but was then laid out by a second rope piledriver from Garcia.

The 28-year-old MJF made his acting debut in “The Iron Claw,” briefly appearing as Lance Von Erich. Deadline notes that he also has roles in upcoming movies “The Floaters” and “Stranglehold.”
