Sami Zayn defends Gingerbread Man storyline and what he thought ‘was a good piece of business’

After recent reports of a creative pushback on the Gingerbread Man storyline emerged, Sami Zayn has now publicly defended the angle.

Recently speaking on Huge POP! Zayn opened up on the ongoing Gingerbread Man storyline on WWE SmackDown, involving Trick Williams, Lil Yachty, and Zayn himself. Despite the online criticism and reports of internal creative pushback, Zayn believes it “was a good piece of business.”

I don’t know. I think context is kind of key for all of these things, right? A couple of weeks ago — I think these were maybe back-to-back weeks. I get the timeline messed up sometimes in my head, but the one week when Trick (Williams) and Lil Yachty had came out with the Gingerbread Man, and then I ended up being under the outfit and attacked them with the cane and all that. I thought that was great, and then the following week, I just had the Gingerbread Man mannequin in the ring… and beat up the Gingerbread mannequin. So, in both cases, a Gingerbread Man is kind of — I don’t wanna say the focal part of it but, kind of, right?” Zayn said.

There’s this serious WrestleMania program for the United States Championship that involves a Gingerbread Man. On paper, sounds kind of silly. But the week we did it, where it was me under the suit, and I’m dancing, and then I clock those guys, I thought that was great,” Zayn added.

However, despite defending the storyline, he also addressed the parts where he felt it lacked life. “Then the following week, with the mannequin, it felt a little bit more lifeless to me. Not as great, maybe a little silly. I don’t know. It’s kind of week-to-week and it’s all in execution so I don’t think the concept of involving a Gingerbread Man on its own is ridiculous because this is pro wrestling and we do all kinds of fun things that maybe, you know, if you were on the internet and you were scrolling Twitter or whatever, and you saw a clip of guys in a ring with a Gingerbread Man, you’d be like what? But, in the world of wrestling, there’s context, and it kind of makes sense, and sometimes, these things get really over, actually.”

Sami Zayn further defends and explains WWE’s Gingerbread Man storyline

In the same interview, the former United States Champion opened up in detail and explained why the Gingerbread Man storyline is not silly.

So, I don’t think the concept of the Gingerbread Man by itself is ridiculous or silly. It’s all in execution and on a week-to-week basis. But I thought that week where the Gingerbread Man showed up with the bus and he was dapping up Trick, and then he had his own locker room, and then I’m dancing and having all this fun, then I’m just part of the celebration because the Gingerbread Man is there to troll me essentially and make fun of me, and I whack them with a cane and I break the cane on Yachty’s back, and that cane was legitimately made of I don’t know what — oak or something. It was so hard. I don’t know how it broke. I felt that was all a good piece of business, and it was all fun so I don’t take a look at things like a Gingerbread Man, and dismiss them.” (H/T Fightful)

Zayn believes a storyline depends on how the wrestlers execute and commit to it. He believes that when someone is invested and committed to a storyline, they can turn it good.

WOL: Bread Man Walking

It’s the Saturday edition of Wrestling Observer Live with Jim Valley.

The Gingerbread Man closed the go-home Smackdown for tonight’s WWE Backlash, ending a show long angle that was short on big laughs and long on being long. If not for the aura of Trick Williams, this could have been a baking disaster. Will we see a surprise Gingerbread appearance at Backlash? It would all make sense if we did.

Between that, Pat McAfee, Gunther and Paul Heyman, among other WWE surprises haven’t been very surprising lately. Why do I hate fun and whimsy? Because I’m the gatekeeping fun police, that’s why!

Plus, thoughts on tonight’s Backlash, AEW Fairway to Hell and more. Check it out.

Lil Yachty & Trick Williams fool Sami Zayn during WWE SmackDown Gingerbread Man funeral

The Gingerbread Man has risen from the dead.

Throughout Friday’s SmackDown in Jacksonville, various wrestlers paid tribute to the Gingerbread Man, which drew the ire of Sami Zayn throughout the night. In the final segment of the show, Williams was paying tribute to the fallen cookie with a moment of silence when Zayn interrupted the proceedings. He went on to complain about the costs of the funeral and panned the performance of the choir that had sung just minutes prior. Zayn promised to win back the United States title from Williams at Backlash on Saturday then started to make his exit, but it instead turned into a cheap shot and an attack, leaving Williams reeling in the corner.

Zayn posed with the United States title when suddenly, the Gingerbread Man rose from his casket and took off his head, revealing himself to be Lil Yachty who was taken out a few weeks ago by Zayn. He grabbed a candy cane kendo stick and struck Zayn multiple times, giving Williams the opportunity to recover and lay out Zayn with the trick knee. The final moments of SmackDown had Williams and Yachty standing tall.

The sudden rise and fall of the Gingerbread Man

Although it had been initially introduced as a joke aimed at Sami Zayn, the Gingerbread Man storyline took a dramatic turn on last week’s show after Zayn destroyed the costume. Williams ran out for the save, then grew concerned and threw up the X sign, treating the situation seriously. Joe Tessitore made the grim announcement later in the show that the cookie had passed on.

It was reported on Thursday that the heavy use of the Gingerbread Man character last week got “notable pushback” from some within WWE’s creative, with a source telling Wrestlevotes Radio they felt the angle was “hokey and archaic.”

Gingerbread Man angle on WWE SmackDown reportedly got internal pushback

Reports of internal pushback on the Sami Zayn Gingerbread Man creative on WWE SmackDown have emerged.

Before WWE WrestleMania 42, the veteran Sami Zayn got involved in a feud against Trick Williams. At WrestleMania 42, Williams defeated Zayn to crown himself the new WWE United States Champion. At the same time, fans also saw the introduction of the Gingerbread Man on SmackDown with Williams and Lil Yachty.

The conclusion of that story saw Zayn seemingly turn heel and kill the Gingerbread Man on WWE SmackDown. And now a report from Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select has emerged, citing that many in WWE were against the storyline.

The report noted that there were several creative members pushing against the heavy use of the Gingerbread Man gimmick on SmackDown. A Wrestlevotes Radio’s source close to the creative team called the angle “hokey and archaic.”

In addition to this, there was also a “notable pushback” from the WWE’s creative members while the storyline direction was discussed.

Sami Zayn explains his heel/babyface character dynamic in WWE

Days after killing off the Gingerbread man gimmick on SmackDown, Sami Zayn recently appeared for an interview with The Toronto Sun, where he opened up about his current character direction.

“I’ll disagree with your statement that I’ve fully turned heel here. I don’t think I have. I think I’m trying to play this one a little different because this one is kind of different. We’re kind of riding these reactions which are kind of different week to week.

“I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box, that would split the audience a little bit, but sometimes things just don’t work out exactly how you envision it. Sometimes you think you’re going to be somewhere on the timeline and you’re not,” he said.

Women’s US title match, Gunther, Gingerbread Man funeral set for next WWE SmackDown

Two matches, Gunther, and a funeral are set for the next edition of SmackDown.

Giulia confronted Tiffany Stratton backstage on Friday, wanting her rematch for the United States title. Stratton was fine with defending the title, but was more interested in defending against Kiana James. Giulia agreed, establishing Stratton’s first title defense for next week.

Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair, and Rhea Ripley will team up meanwhile to take on Fatal Influence. After Jacy Jayne’s teammates helped her score a huge upset win on Friday, Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid went in on the attack on both Flair and Bliss. Rhea Ripley came down for the save despite frosty words between Flair and Ripley earlier in the night.

Gunther will be live after attacking Cody Rhodes following his successful victory over Ricky Saints on Friday, establishing himself as next in line for a WWE title match.

The Gingerbread Man, who Sami Zayn and Lil Yachty brought out to embarrass Sami Zayn, was “killed” on Friday after Zayn brought him out and ripped the outfit apart. Williams came to the ring for the save, but it was too late. He held up the X sign and later in the night, it was solemnly announced that Gingerbread Man had passed away.
