Fan Feedback: NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 12

Thumbs UP!

– Best Match: Okada-Naito
– Worst Match: New Japan Rumble

I was there live and it was definitely worth the trip. Surprised Naito didn’t win. I love Okada, but Naito’s merch dwarfed everyone else combined 10 to 1. Naito got the biggest pops of the night by far.

– Adam Berger

For what it’s worth, I was impressed by what I saw from Reika Seiki in the main event of the Joshi show that aired on DDT Universe ahead of WK12. She’s this cute 25-year-old who is 4’11” but throws these amazing kicks, very stiff, with a style that reminds me of Nakajima.

– Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito
– Worst Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Jay White

This show was outstanding with great matches in a variety of styles. It was a mistake in my opinion to not pull the trigger on Naito as that crowd was ready to pop huge for a Naito title win. But I’m sure Gedo has a long-term plan with this. Most of the matches delivered at or above my expectations, which were
rather lofty. Goto vs. Suzuki was brutal but excellent, ditto for Omega vs. Jericho in a different way, and of course the four-way for
the Jr. Title was remarkable, especially when they started using their opponent’s trademark moves against one another.

I watched the Japanese version and really enjoyed Shinpei’s calls, especially in the Jericho/Omega match, but also in the four-way when Scurll hit an Oscutter on Ospreay and Shinpei went bonkers over it. It will be fun to hear Jim Ross’ play-by-play of the final two matches on AXS TV. Tanahashi vs. White wasn’t a bad match, but on a loaded show that overachieved, their match felt flat.

– Lou Pickney

Thumbs way up. The whole show was great. Best match for me was Alpha v Omega. This was absolutely my favorite. I’m a big Jericho and Omega fan, so I may be biased, but the passion and story in this match was just fantastic. It never mattered to me who would win, just that both were giving their all. And I was literally on the edge of my seat the more the match played out. I marked out a little when the Liontamer happened and with the One Winged Angel on the chair. Too many spots to be honest to call them all out.

I loved the whole show. Okada v Naito was amazing, as was the 4 way, and I thought Cody showed up to play. Great heel tactics with Brandi.

MOTN: Omega vs. Jericho
Worst: Tag Gauntlet (not counting Rumble, and I didn’t think it was a bad match, just “worst” on the card)

Loved Omega vs Jericho. Shocked to say it was my MOTN. The No DQ stip was obviously the smoke and mirrors they needed for Jericho at this point in his career, but he really came through and the match over delivered. Hats off to them, didn’t think it could eclipse the main event, but it did.

Okada vs. Naito felt flat aside from the last few minutes. I don’t mind Okada retaining, Gedo’s booking an all-time king and we had arguably the best year of title defenses in the history of the business, so I’m not complaining that it’s not over. Also, with the interjection of Jericho into this card, for better or for worse, Naito wasn’t the main focus of this event in the final build and to a large portion of the global audience, so perhaps the eventual crowning is better off when the focus is solely on him.

Suzuki vs. Goto was great, and again over delivered as I could not care less about Goto, but Suzuki was on fire and gave one of his best performances of the year.

4-way was good, but I think almost any combo of the 4 in a singles would have been a better match. Didn’t need the umbrella whacking finish, it added nothing to the match, especially when a No DQ was following it up later.

Tana vs. White, I really had zero investment in White whatsoever. Tana put on a great show as always, but White has no business in a Top 3 Tokyo Dome match. Glad Tana won because White is not ready to beat him, but upset Tana is seemingly never going to take time off to heal.

Ibushi vs. Cody was decent, but Cody just isn’t a big match NJPW performer, as we all know.

Good card, but overall definitely the weakest Tokyo Dome of the last few years as was expected due to the booking and leaving Ishii and Ibushi out of big singles matches with too much focus on guys like White and Cody who are not at Tokyo Dome singles matches levels yet. The top 4 of last year vs. this year is no comparison, and nothing hit 5 stars IMO.

– Tim Dudley, Toronto

I think WK12 was not on the level of WK 11, 10 or 9. It’s too bad with so many new eyes, people are seeing this WK and not WK11. I personally don’t have any match as 5 star match on the card.

MOTN – IWGP Jr. Heavyweight 4 Way followed by: Omega – Jericho

Okada – Naito – a little disappointed both in the booking of the match and the match not delivering like Omega – Okada or Tanahashi – Okada. Naito is white hot and they don’t go with him?

Also what was up with Okada’s pants?

Ibushi – Cody – Cody’s best match so far

Bucks vs R3K – Can you report if  Matt was legit injured because either that is the greatest sell job of all time or he tweeked his back bad.

KES vs LIJ – Young Lions were the MVP

6 Man – Gauntlet

Tanahashi – Jay White – I hated this match. I have seen Jay White live twice in ROH and each time the crowds were dead for him. I was speaking to some people who watch RevPro and they said the same thing. I have nothing against Jay White but I dont see anything in him and I dont understand putting him against Tanahashi in that slot at WK.

Imagine Tanahashi and Ibushi have their match from Power Struggle at WK12. I think the whole event feels different.

– Thomas Grimes

Thumbs way up

Best match – Okada/Naito
Worst match – gauntlet match

I thought it was an amazing show. The backlash of Okada winning online is somewhat ridiculous. My only real criticism of the show is the TERRIBLE blade hand off spot with Omega/Red Shoes . This ALMOST completely lost me on the match. I couldn’t believe they did such a horrible job with camera angles there and it seemed to go on forever.

-Ty Dawson

Thumbs SIGNIFICANTLY up. Stayed up all night watching it live and I’m glad I did.

Best Match: Jericho/Omega. Okada/Naito an inch behind. I liked more of Jericho/Omega than I did the other. The last 6-7 minutes of Okada/Naito was absolutely bonkers.

Worst Match: Tanahashi/White. Not to say it was bad. It just wasn’t as good as the others. Poor Tanahashi. That guy can’t get a break. Literally. He needs to go away and heal. He looks miserable and constantly in pain.

– Cale Koprowski

Thumbs firmly in the middle due to NJPW’s own standards they’ve set for themselves over the last year. Length wise it seemed to drag, especially including the NJR.

Jnr 4 Way easily the best match of the night with what felt like a surprising winner too. Scurll looked like a superstar out there, he’s always very good but thought he was MVP last night.

Tanahashi vs White worst for me, very underwhelming debut for White, got the tools but no where near ready for a WK singles match. Seen some Young Lions have much better performances the in the previous weeks. Sad that Tanahashi has now had two high profile matches between the US show against Gunn and this match that were both pretty poor, through no fault of his own.

– Scott Anderson

First off i want to give this show more than 2 thumbs up. What i really liked about it was the different champions comming out of the show and i think somd stars were made including Switchblade Jay White and Will Ospreay.

My match of the night was for the IWGP JR heavyweight championship between Kushida, Takahashi, Ospreay and Marty Scrull. I thought this match was faced paced and action packed. What i took away from this match was Will Ospreay is superstar now. I feel he showed the world just how darn good of wrestler he is. In my own opinon if someone does not think Ospreay can work, watch this match, he has his own flare and style that i think really translates.

My worst match of the night still wasnt even that bad and that was the guanlet match. It was a little quick and i just didnt like some of the quick pins by Yano. I still liked the match but that one just didnt go over well for me.

I think a very notable match was Kota Ibushi vs Cody. I thought the match was paced well and had a little of everything in it to keep it interesting. I really think Kota is future champion.

– Ryan Stine, Ohio

Overall great show last night, truly the best wrestling on the planet.  Best bout for me was the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Fatal 4 Way match.  If I had to pick a worst bout it would have to be the Never 6 Man Tag gauntlet match.  Great show though, exceeded my expectations for my first NJPW show.

– Tyler Switzky

Thumbs up. One of the best shows we will see all year.

Best Match: Fatal 4 Way for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship. Nonstop excitement, innovative spots, pure talent, and a total spotfest but not sloppy. Jericho vs. Omega is a close 2nd place for Match of the Night.

Worst Match: Tanahashi vs. Jay White. Hands down, the worst of the Night. Slow, limited, and definitely the wrong spot on the card.

– Chris Rogers

This was more than an A show, let’s get the easy log out of the way.  I just want to talk about Naito and Okada’s match.

Well, the penultimate match on the card was, yes, what we kinda hoped for but not fully expected to devlier. Lots of spots, crazy sequences, and in-ring psychology were continuously chiseled as the match progressed. Saw some botches (I mean, okay some chair shots were meh) but really forgivable. Last thing that I want to point on this match then is that, damn I liked that transition from Walls of Jericho into Liontamer then as soon as Omega tried to grasp some solitude, he went back to the Walls. Hehe that was so really logically cool.

Okay then here are my main cards at hand.

To be honest, I have really toned down my expectations with the bout. Heck, maybe I was just rooting for Okada to win so much that it hindered me to dig deep into the Naito angle.

The opening sequences were pretty WWE-like, it was filled with theatrics and yeah, just trying to immediately connect with the audience thingy and all, but the slow yet equally entertaining start, in a fingersnap, turned into a fast-paced slugfest. Okada was trying to be the aggressor in the early goings, since as for my understanding, he’s taking in the heel role in here, but actually I then got to appreciate how tweener-like their natural characters are.

Of course, the proverbial “Attack Okada’s Neck” ploy was employed. I was actually expecting that even before the match began. But at least it was not really strung up to a degree where it would be unimaginably possible for anyone to fight through. I was scared on a certain spot where Okada nailed his head after a top-rope reverse frankensteiner. He seemed quite groggy to me, well if he isn’t then yeah haha he sold it pretty well on me, AGAIN.

Of course, the instances where both competitors kicked out of each other’s greatest aces, in an extremely close fashion, are always a treat. Okada ultimately won and personally, that made me happy. Not just because I heavily favoredhim, but I think he can still imprint quite a heavier impact say a few more months before relinquishing it to someone. Damn, Naito or Omega, or anyone else can do the succession.

Truth be told, not even meters close to that masterpiece of a main event last year but if we talk about storyline continuity and psychology, it skyrockets its way to certain heights. WOULD BE RATING IT A GENEROUS 4.5 AT THE VERY LEAST. Omega-Jericho can have 5 stars at the very most.

– Juan Carlo Trono

Just back from seeing the show live at the Dome.  The show was incredible live so very much a thumbs up. Best match for me was by far Okada/Naito, the atmosphere was unreal and much louder than it was for even Jericho/Omega. Worst match would have to be the gauntlet match which was fun but nothing else, although the biggest disappointment was Tanahashi/White.

– Daniel McIlwra

Overall: Thumbs up

My wife and I attended live this year for our honeymoon. We were excited, yet anxious the show might not live up to the hype. It was amazing. I might put it above last year, but that might be the bias of being there live. The crowd was intense. We were seated right by the stage, and it was impressive seeing all those people packed in the stadium.

Best match: Okada v Naito

There was no way to tell who was winning this, although my wife and I agreed before the match that Naito winning would be a bit too obvious. They have done well establishing Okada as a strong and worthy champion. It is going to be something really special when he finally drops the belt. Naito was super over with the crowd, but Okada still had some very strong support especially in my section of the crowd. Omega v Jericho and the Jr 4 Way were close for best of the night. The Omega match justified the double main billing, though I’m still not sure it needed the no DQ stip.

Worst match: Tanahashi v White

It wasn’t bad, just disappointing. Tanahashi looked like he had a hard time just getting to the ring. The audience seemed to be very uncomfortable watching Tanahashi get worked over by White. There were no real bad matches on the show. The gauntlet managed to be more fast paced and easy flowing than last year’s, even though there were more teams. Even the opening rumble got by with some simple story telling in it with the various alliances and factions, and the ending with Kakihara made it impossible to hate.

– Will Treadway

MVPs

Naito – This house was there for Naito and his crew.  He deserves that recognition.
Yoh – That opener was hot, and Yoh’s babyface-in-peril performance carried the bulk of it.

I want to say Jericho as well, but his comments about Benoit leading up to the show did spoil the occasion.

Best Match: Naito/Okada – This is rough because it ends on such a sour note, but up until the very last second this is the match of the night.  I came into the show more excited about this than Jericho/Omega.  That finish really does feel rotten, though.  The crowd went dead for it.  They chanted for Naito during the post-match speeches.  I don’t want to predict gloom and doom, nor make this a thing against Gedo or the booking, but it just feels like the wrong choice was made here.

Worst Match: Tanahashi/White – Tanahashi needs to be resting.  White just needs more time to figure out his deal.  Neither one did very badly here at all, but it just wasn’t what it was supposed to be.

THUMBS UP: In the end, this was a very watchable show that didn’t feel like it dragged too long except perhaps the Jericho match.  Booking frustrations aside, the performances were good, the stage looked great, it felt like a big show.  Not as good as last year’s show.

– RJ Zavala

This was my first time watching a wrestle kingdom and watched very little New Japan product. Having said that I give the show a thumbs up! The match of the night for me was Jericho vs Omega, this was the best match I have watched in the past five years, maybe since Shawn vs Undertaker WM25 which is my personal favorite. It was very nice to see the story telling in this match and color was a great addition. I also really enjoyed The Young Bucks vs Sho/Yoh, Naito vs Okada, and the fatal 4 way. My most disliked match was the tag team gauntlet, kinda confusing and just too much going on.

– Brian Owens

Thumbs up!

Best Match: Junior 4 way
Worst Match: New Japan Rumble (it still ruled!)

Notes: Stream wouldn’t load on laptop until after the Rumble. Tried it in Chrome & Edge before it eventually loaded in Chrome. Others on my Timeline were having similar issues except those who were watching via Chromecast or Amazon Fire. Stream worked fine for the rest of the show. Someone on my timeline said that the Japanese broadcast was easier for them to stream. Tamia, a streaming site, was streaming the show. At 2:15 AM PT they had 1100+ people in the English broadcast room and 800+ in the Japanese broadcast room.

This is my second consecutive year watching WK live. My timeline was much more active this year. Most of the active participants in our group chat set alarms to wake up to watch the entire show live, a few others joined in around 2 PT. There was one person who I didn’t even know watched wrestling watching New Japan for the first time. Eventually they powered down during the KES/LIJ tag match.

I could pick apart some of the booking, such as going with Ospreay over Hiromu, beating Sho & Yoh this early, and not taking the belt off Okada. But, I don’t necessarily mind the directions they chose to go. I hope Hiromu gets a singles match, Sho & Yoh had run through the top end of the division, and Okada is the best wrestler in the world drawing very well. But it felt like a missed opportunity to crown Naito. So it goes.

– Brady Childs

Huge thumbs up overall.

I missed the Rumble. Young Bucks, thumbs up, that Swanton spot was nuts! 6man gauntlet, thumbs middle. Alright match, I had some connectivity problems during so I missed the middle act. Ibushi v Rhodes, thumbs Up. Crossrhodes on the apron, holy hell. I thought it was an excellent upper/midcard match. Tag match, thumps up. Again excellent match for its spot.

Suzuki v Goto was where the event began its climax for me. I loved the psychology in this match. I dug Suzuki as the crazy one but come back to honor the stipulation. Fatal 4way. Holy hell. Match of the night for me. The entire thing is instantly rewatchable. Everyone brought it. I love Scurll but Ospreay just showed up. Even the botch towards the end was recovered nicely. This kept me on a high.

Tanahashi vs Switchblade was the match you had to have after he fatal 4way. Was a well done match but was definitely the primer for the next match. Probably the lullest match but I like what I see in Jay White.

Y2j vs Omega. Perfect storytelling. Omega it th scrappy never give up kinda guy. Y2j is the arrogant veteran who controlled the first half but by the end was putting over Omega perfectly. I wish the set up chair spot for the the winged angel was done a little differently but that is nitpicking. This hit my expectations exactly right.

Okada vs Naito. Again just perfect storytelling. I kinda wanted Naito to go over but that’s personal preference more than anything. Okada proves once again why he’s headlining WK for a third time in a row.

The whole show was almost too much to handle honestly. Perfect combination of technical prowess and utter pure unadulterated fun. I really hope njpw can reach higher audiences. Next time they tour states I’m going regardless where their shows are. Once again a a lifelong WWE fan I cringe when I look at the past few WM offerings in comparison, especially because wwe has the personnel to execute comparable show. After wk12, njpw I my go to recommended product.

– Phil Stricklin

Thumbs up for the show. 6 hours doesn’t feel like 6 hours without endless filler and advertising like a WWE show, the show was booked in perfect order of ascending quality and heat of match with 1 exception. Which leads to the Worst match: white v. Tanahashi. Just flat. So, so flat and dull and… Just bleh. It was a fine match, but it was just not “good”

Best match: I’m gonna do it. I want to say Naito v. Okada or Omega v. Jericho, but the truth is the best match was the Jr heavyweight 4 way. It had all the coordination of a tag, the high spots, some technical wrestling, some comedy, some viciousness. It was a match with something for everyone on top of great athletes doing great things and the added bonus of not telegraphing the winner at any point.

WWE TLC fan feedback

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor
  • Worst Match: Enzo Amore vs. Kalisto

Overall I thought TLC was a good show. Banks vs. Fox was a reasonably good pre-show match and the fans seemed into it. The fans were pretty good for most of the show which helped things. Asuka vs. Emma was good, although maybe a little too much offense for Emma. Asuka obviously had to win. Hope they don’t book her like they book everyone else that has come up through NXT and that includes Shinsuke losing clean a bunch and Roode already losing to Dolph etc.

Alexander and Swann vs. Kendrick and Gallagher was a good tag match. Good action. They need to keep that up on 205. Alexa Bliss vs. Mickie James was a solid match and the women’s matches were more hard hitting then they have been on WWE. NXT usually allows for it more. Enzo vs. Kalisto was lame. Enzo having the title since he’s an obnoxious heel is okay, but he is lousy in the ring. He really should just be a manager for guys who need them like Corbin, Cass etc.  Back of the line for you Kalisto, or so I hope. Time to move Cedric or Swann or someone more exciting to the front of the line.

Balor vs. Styles was a lot of fun. Very good match and Balor going over puts him in a good position. Hopefully these guys will be on opposite Survivor Series teams so we can see some more. Jordan vs. Elias was fine, but nothing great. That finish seemed like it wasn’t planned, but who knows. I’m sure they will meet again tomorrow night. Main event was wild, although certainly not the way I would have liked to see Angle return especially when he is wearing Shield gear. I guess Braun is a face now and he will destroy Kane in time for Glen’s election.  But overall a solid show. War Games and Survivor Series here we come and the obliteration of Jinder by Brock.

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor
  • Worst Match: Kalisto vs. Enzo Amore

It amused me to hear WWE’s announcers try to explain the history of Styles and Balor leading Bullet Club in New Japan without mentioning the faction or the promotion aside from just saying Japan, like “the New York territory” or “up north” by WCW wrestlers (and others) referencing WWF/WWE back in the day.

The main event was a car crash spot fest with tons of crazy stunts. Generally speaking, I’m not particularly fond of WWE weapon-heavy matches. But these guys worked very hard and it was a difficult choice for me for Best Match between the main event and Styles/Balor.

I still don’t think burning through Angle’s return to a WWE ring was worth it, though at least they tried to make the most of it, complete with saving the pop from Angle’s music for his mid-match return from nap time. Maybe they didn’t actually change the match layout all that much from what was planned for Roman?

They clearly tried to protect Angle, though the bump he took landing head-first on the apron late against Miz didn’t look good. It’s ridiculous to me that WWE will allow Angle to wrestle and take bumps but not Bryan Danielson, but WWE is a strange company that plays by its own rules — even when those rules make no sense.

If nothing else, there are all kinds of merchandising options for the Shield version of Kurt Angle, even if it was a one-time only thing. Perhaps something like the CM Punk action figure made by Mattel with the Macho Man tribute outfit Punk wore once on TV.

Just wanted to give my thoughts on the TLC show from tonight. I gave the show a big thumbs up, I thought it was great considering the revamping they had to do, and as a result probably ended up with a better card than originally planned. I thought the best match of the night was the main event TLC match and worst match of the night being the Jordan / Elias match as it was just basically a long comedy segment.

Banks / Fox — Good match, surprised it was on the pre show segment of the night, but otherwise a good match. Banks is great and hope they are elevating Fox into the title picture eventually or just having more of an impact in the women’s division as they really haven’t don’t much with her. Good win for Banks, but would have elevated Fox if she had won.

Asuka / Emma — I thought it was a good match, good to see Asuka on the main roster finally. I thought it was a very physical match and Emma plays a great heel. I’ve seen better matches in NXT with Asuka, but it was still a good match and worked well. Good win and debut for Asuka on the main roster.

Kendrick / Gallagher vs. Cedric / Swann — Good tag match, good win for Cedric / Swann. Would like to see the cruiserweights featured more on Raw and given the time to have good matches. Raw definitely has the time available to showcase the cruiserweights in great matches but they often don’t. The 3 hrs for Raw is constant replays of segments all night. They should dedicate more time on PPV and Raw to this division as they have the talent.

Bliss / James — Was a good match. Good win for Bliss to retain the title, but was hoping Mickie would win and get another run with the title. But Bliss definitely has the “it” factor going and is good for being so young, she can really play to the crowd. Good match.

Kalisto / Enzo — A good win to put the title back on Enzo as he draws attention and hopefully this will spark more interest and more focus on the cruiserweight division. Enzo is by far not the best cruiserweight but can elevate interest in the division I think. Would rather see him stay face as clearly the crowd does not want to boo him. Good win for Enzo

Balor / Styles — A true dream match that would have been given more time if it happened in New Japan. This match could have gone 45 minutes to an hour as both men have the cardio for it and I would have loved to see a match go that long with these two. But I know that would never happen in WWE. So it was great for the time given and told a great story. Good win for Balor, AJ did not look weak in getting pinned as it was a strong match. Ended great with a “too sweet” in the ring and respect shown between both competitors. Would have been awesome if the Young Bucks did a run in, but one can only dream, lol. Almost had my vote for best match of the night and it was a very close match for match of the night if the main event had not been so entertaining. Hopefully we will get a rematch somewhere down the line and Styles gets the win and sets up best of 3 series. Maybe at Survivor Series since it’s a combined roster show?

Jordan / Elias — Comedy time filling match. And I’m sure to buffer the crowd between the Balor / Styles match and the TLC main event.

Angle, Ambrose, Rollins vs. Miz, Braun, Kane, Cesaro, Sheamus — Was a great main event and very entertaining. Was given plenty of time since the match was going to have limitations with 3 on 5 and Angle being limited to what he could do. This match was all over the place and everyone was very physical. Was hoping for a surprise teammate for the Shield crew since Angle is the GM and could have authorized someone to compete on their team such as a surprise return by Brock Lesnar or even Undertaker. But no complaints at all as I thought the main event was great and just had a fun time watching the match and how physical it was.

I don’t think Angle should do anything else other than tag matches on rare occasions as I don’t think he has a singles career match really left in him to have a great match but his limitations can be hidden in matches like this. Would have been a good career boost for Jason Jordan if they instead threw him into this match to protect Kurt, but could have also botched the match as well. It was great for what it was. An excellent and wild main event match. Told a good story. Was given the proper time. It was a fun match to watch and good to have Angle get the win.

  • Best Match: Balor v Styles
  • Worst Match: TLC Match

There was a lot of choices on TV tonight (Super Bowl rematch, Walking Dead premiere) so flirted with watching later on demand but did go with watching live and was entertained by the card.

That main event though was something else in the vein of the doomsday cage match. Way too many aspects where you’d have to suspend disbelief too far for the nonsense.  Don’t think Roman being in it would change it either the dynamic was always too weird. I Think folks will be talking about this spectacle for a while in the bad way.

Balor Styles was insane especially given the short notice and AJs schedule. Hope we get a rematch at Survivor Series if they are doing a number of interbrand matches.

Both main card women’s matches were good as were the cruiserweight matches. Elias Jordan didn’t need to be dragged out over all those segments; one to lead to a match would have been fine. I enjoy both more than others so end result was fine.

Do we still get a Miz led coalition against the Shield match when Roman is back? If so man I hope its a six man.

Thumbs up show

  • Best Match: Styles vs. Balor
  • Worst Match: Enzo vs. Kalisto

I thought this was the best WWE PPV in recent memory. The two last minute changes made the show way better than originally conceived. The show never dragged, the Enzo and Elias matches were lame, but they served to Pace the show well. I thought Mickey looked really sharp in her match and her promo was well received by the crowd. I would like to see her get a run with the title soon. The too sweet at the end of Styles match added to the match immensely, especially since the guy in the cease and desist shirt was on hard cam all night. This was a classic match that paid off huge smart-fans. I like seeing Angle again, he didn’t take dumb chances. The same can’t be said for Ambrose. He took some crazy bumps. His two botched table spots look painful. It was a nice brawl with good heat. It was the most fun I’ve had watching a WWE show in a long time.

Thumbs in the middle.

  • Best Match: AJ v. Finn
  • Worst Match: Enzo v. Kalisto

Only thing keeping this from being a thumbs down is the AJ/Finn match and Angle during the last part of the main event. Asuka was fine as well, although I think she should’ve won more decisively.

Thumbs Up.

  • Best Match: AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor
  • Worst Match: Enzo vs. Kalisto

TLC Main Event was exactly as advertised (well, not the actual participants but the style of the TLC match itself). Aside from the obvious caution signs in booking high spot demolition derbies like this and the Summerslam main event when it comes to the “law of diminishing returns” and basic fan inoculation it sure as hell was entertaining for a total schmoz, even though they took it a bit too goofy/overboard with the dumpster stuff and had the fans chanting “This is Murder”, which was weird (I loved Cesaro’s response to the crowd’s chant). This wasn’t my personal flavor of match but I still enjoyed it.

AJ/Balor was really great and babyface vs. babyface matches are usually a harder story to tell and it reached that point of excitement, to where I didn’t mind which guy won and really didn’t want it to end yet and could’ve watched them go all night. One negative to the match (and it was a throughline for the entire show), was how detrimental Booker T is while on commentary and how silly and asinine his contributions are, to the point where it feels like he’s not really paying attention to the matches. That said, really impressive showings by both AJ and Balor.

Mickie/Alexa Bliss picked up as it went along but felt a bit rudderless and I’m not sure if Alexa got lost but it seemed a bit clunky in spots and the crowd seemed fairly quiet and disengaged. I get heels cheating to win, but I don’t like the WWE booking of referees interfering in the babyface’s aggressive comeback (Mickie and Kalisto), which leads to the heel getting the upper hand and win, since it doesn’t make sense that the referee lets so much go on in a match but then inserts themselves at that moment. It’s weird logic to me and almost makes the referee a heel by cutting off the babyfaces at selective moments of the match.

Enzo/Kalisto wasn’t very good, didn’t really have much flow and there was a spot where Enzo went for a version of the hiptoss/rockerdropper reversal spot and looked to land directly on his head. I thought the cruiser tag was much, much better technically, although the finish looked a bit awkward. I really enjoy both Swann and Alexander and think they have loads of potential to be an exciting babyface tag team to challenge for the RAW titles, since they’ve got fire and can sell from underneath and are also in purgatory in 205 Live, where there is no tag division.

Asuka/Emma: I enjoyed the opener and thought it was a really solid showing from Emma, although it was a bit of a head scratcher since I’m not sure tonight was the night for them to have a competitive match, since they’ve touted Asuka’s RAW debut as such a big deal and pushed her as this undefeated wrecking ball and by contrast, they haven’t really booked Emma as anything significant in years. As a result, it didn’t feel like the fans believed in any of Emma’s pinfalls as a real threat, so there wasn’t any heat to them and I think it might’ve been more beneficial to just give the fans a more dominant Asuka showcase here.

Overall, a better-than-average WWE PPV, which was likely saved by the AJ Styles replacement, that elevated the show from being a “one match card” with the main event, to having two really entertaining “PPV caliber” matches and an undercard of pretty bland, run of the mill filler that was solid but unspectacular.

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: AJ Styles vs Finn Balor
  • Worst Match: Jason Jordan vs Elias

One a first impression, AJ vs Finn is a strong contender for me personally in terms of WWE MOTY. I do wish they’d had another five minutes or so to build to the finish a little more.

TLC was ridiculous in a mostly fun way. Seemed obvious that they tried to protect Kurt, at times he looked rough, but I’m not sure how much was him selling vs actually struggling. It went longer than I would have liked; if Kurt feels ok, I’d be interested in seeing him have a few limited one on one or traditional tag matches.

I can’t tell if Elias gets good heat or go-away heat. In ring he’s one of the most boring guys on the main roster.

**********

All in all, TLC was pretty underwhelming. Initially, I was excited for the changes, but WWE found a way to not capitalize on them (ex: not letting Kurt come out in his ring attire after he returned).

  • Thumbs up: AJ/Finn — Pretty good match, but it should’ve been given more time (shave 10 minutes off that main event).
  • Thumbs down: The rest of the card — Emma looked way too strong, Cruiserweight Division is dying, the main event was all over the place (seriously, they killed a guy).

– Jordan Kirkland

**********

  • Best match of course AJ and Finn
  • Worst match The Main EVENT

I thought the main event was confusing and all over the place and a lot of other people did too I think it was a waste of a Kurt angle return and it reminded me of a WCW Vince Russo booked gimmick match terrible pay per view.

  • Best Match: AJ Styles vs Finn Balor
  • Worst Match: Elias Sampson vs Jason Jordan

So Kurt Angle had his first match back in WWE in 11 years and got cheered like crazy, got the W, even his “son” got a W, but the storyline made no sense.

Finn Balor got a W over AJ Styles and this will probably continue with a Survivor Series team matchup.

Enzo Amore won the Cruiserweight title back – and got cheered, even in his heel persona.

Two-match show that still delivered.

– Jeff Cohen

I give the show a Thumbs Down, I thought AJ Vs Finn Was amazing, best match without a doubt, and (it sucks that bray got sick but) it saved us from a pumpkin Finn vs Sister Abigail so that’s great!

The rest of the Card was forgettable, it felt like a long episode of main event, Enzo in my opinion is so annoying that I went to the kitchen to get a snack during his match, I know he is the heel and I’m supposed to hate him, but I cant stand to see him anymore.

Asuka vs Emma was ok, nothing special.

and the TLC main event was sooooooo damn stupid, made no sense, and I was so happy to see Kurt back, but It was a clusterf*ck of chair shots that made no damage, nobody sold injury and that garbage truck was the cherry on the shit sundae they gave us.

hope my opinion is useful, have a nice week!

WWE Hell in a Cell & NJPW King of Pro Wrestling fan feedback

Thumbs in the middle

  • Best: Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon
  • Worst: Natalya vs. Charlotte Flair

A totally typical WWE SmackDown show — solid action, horrid booking and a complete lack of direction. The Hell in a Cell matches weren’t exactly classics but delivered overall as Owens/Shane was exactly the stunt fest I expected while New Day/Usos was somehow both truly exciting & unsettlingly goofy. I guess the Nakamura experiment is over before it ever really even started.

– Nick Randall

Thumbs In The Middle

  • Best Match: New Day/Usos
  • Worst Match: Orton/Rusev

Came back from the Giants-Chargers game in NJ looking forward to this and was somewhat disappointed Shane and Owens went all-out but not by much. New Day and the Usos keep stealing the show month after month.

– Mike Stack

**********

The two Cell matches were standouts. They both sold different stories, with New Day vs Usos selling the danger of being inside the cell and Shane/KO selling the danger and fear of fighting outside it.

The US triple threat was good, I enjoyed all three guys. Corbin looked good, and really put some stink on those kicks when he put AJ out of the ring for the pin.

Charlotte vs Natalya wasn’t especially riveting but I enjoyed watching it and I’m excited to see where it goes from here.

And finally, Sami saving Owens was a fantastic moment and I can’t wait to see how it plays out. Did he want to save his friend from certain doom? Did he help Owens win to end the feud, because if Owens lost he’d certainly get hurt from escalating this feud more and more? Or has he finally snapped and wanted to hurt Shane?

Cliffhangers can be fantastic for wrestling and stories in general, and Hell in a Cell 2017 ended on a great one.

– Cole Golden

Thumbs up for HiaC. Best match: Usos-New Day. Worst: Roode-Ziggler. Everything was at least good with the exception of Roode-Ziggler and the finish of Charlotte-Nattie. Would go four stars for both HiaC matches. Was very uneasy when Shane and Owens fought on the top of the cage and for the ridiculous Shane stunt at the end.

The final three New Japan matches were better than anything on the WWE PPV. I’d go ****3/4 for Naito-Ishii, and in a normal year, it would be a MotY contender. Ospreay-Kushida was almost as great, at ****1/2. Okada-EVIL was excellent, if maybe a bit disappointing since it didn’t reach the level of the other two matches. ****1/4 for that one. Huge thumbs up, obviously, and not having watched any of the undercard, I can’t name a worst match.

Thumbs in the middle show.

Mixed bag. Some of the matches delivered, some were predictable and some were plan silly. First half of the show seemed to go by quickly, the second half was brutally slow.

  • New Day-Usos: Really enjoyed this match and feud.
  • Randy Orton-Rusev: Good straight forward wrestling match. I suppose you have to keep Orton strong but another missed opportunity to put someone new over..
  • Charlotte-Nattie: Brutal finish. Match was OK before the finish that was just dumb and lazy.
  • Corbin-Styles-Dillinger: First half of this match was basic, last 10 minutes was great.
  • Nakamura-Jinder: Not as bad as previous one but still nothing to it. Finish was a head scratcher but predictable.
  • Roode-Dolph: Filler and disappointing.
  • Shane-Owens: Better then expected but way too long. Would love to see Shane stop trying to kill himself. Loved the surprise turn by Zayn. Just what he needed.

  • Worst Match: Shinsuke Nakamura vs Jinder Mahal

PPV was going well until we got into the third hour. Thought all the matches were solid with Usos vs New Day were great. Nakamura vs Mahal was rough and counter-productive booking. Mahal is the most dogsh*t wrestler to be WWE champion. He just has nothing going for him in between the ropes.

Main event was excessive. This tweet sums up my feelings

Looking forward to Owens and Zayn as a team though

THUMBS UP!!!!!!

  • Best Match: Okada vs. EVIL
  • Worst Match: None. (I could do without Yano though…)

The last three matches were all main event-caliber awesome and it’s crazy to think that they were able to follow each other and deliver big time. KUSHIDA is one of my favorite wrestlers and it blows me away that he was possibly only in the THIRD best match on this card.  Solid undercard matches too, it was cool to see “Sho and Yo” and I thought the build for future matchups was quite strong and am excited to see things peak on January 4th.

Overall, a really great show. Probably best consumed with a bit of time/distance from HIAC since the disparity between the two doesn’t really feel fair and is maybe best(and simply) described by this card’s name: “King of Pro Wrestling”.

WWE Great Balls of Fire fan feedback

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: Ambulance Match
  • Worst Match: Ambrose vs. Miz

Show started off well with a good cruiserweight match between Neville and Tozawa. Crowd at least is into it. Neville dropping the title on a preshow seems unlikely and who knows who will come around to take it from him.

Rollins vs. Wyatt was a fine match. Glad to see Wyatt pick up a win here, but will it actually lead to anything or just Rollins getting his win back?

Enzo vs. Big Cass was basically what I expected which is Cass going over and squashing his former friend. Not sure what to do with Enzo now. Manager or cruiserweight seems like the best options.

Tag team Iron Man match was good. Not sure what happened at the end with Cesaro being the legal man or so they said. I’d like to see footage of this since it seemed like the ref lost control.

Raw Women’s match was also pretty solid except for the count out. I really don’t get the count out rule in this day and age especially when they use this finish so often in title matches that it makes the rules, the ref, and everyone but the champ look stupid. I mean if you are the champ why wouldn’t you just get counted out every single time and be Champion forever.

Ambrose vs. Miz was a weak match. Nothing new here and the wrestling wasn’t anything special. Should the ref allow this many people at ringside? It’s not a lumberjack match. Let’s hope this feud is over.

Strowman vs. Reigns delivered again, although not as good as some of their other matches. Strowman wins and Reigns destroys him after, but was this a double turn? Roman has to be a heel for trying to kill someone right? I sure hope Kurt Angle doesn’t reward an attempted murder with a main event title match at Summer Slam.

Despite the short length the main event was good. I think they could have used a few more minutes, but it came across well. I’d like to see Joe get more main event matches and even a title run. I would have let him kick out of the first F5 at least.

Overall a decent show good enough for a thumbs up.

Thumbs Up.

Enjoyed the show overall, some really cool/clever spots throughout, many of the finishes were clunky but that’s about par for the course with WWE. Commentary isn’t a net-positive but that’s another par for the WWE course. Booker T. uses far too many superlatives too often when selling the matches, and that comes across as disingenuous and hokey.

Would’ve preferred a more realistic, UWFi-style match out of Joe/Brock if only because fans are so much more educated when it comes to submissions and general grappling due to the massive expanse of MMA and thus, the Joe chokeout spots didn’t resonate as much as they could’ve if they’d have worked it a little bit more like a shoot and sold when Joe would get a hook in etc.

I think it would’ve been cool and different in a positive way if they let Joe’s submissions look a bit more authentic and threatening. By comparison, I felt as though the Whittaker/Romero fight last night had more drama (Joe/Brock clearly had the better build) and even the third round pop Werdum got after he hurt Overeem and went for the takedown, knowing his BJJ credentials “told better stories” and that was without the benefit of being able to lay out spots. Joe/Brock was fun for a “Hoss Fight” but it felt like they left a much more cerebral and realistic match on the table.

  • Best match: Samoa Joe vs. Brock Lesnar

Liked Banks/Bliss (though the finish was weak, as is the case with most women’s PPV matches) and the main event (though Joe should’ve kicked out of the first F5, and it could’ve gone another ~4 minutes), everything else was uninteresting.

– Tyler Shillman

**********

Overall thumbs in the middle … Probably should be a slight thumbs up, but never gave the show my full attention from beginning to end.

  • Best – Lesnar vs Joe – the way they ended the Reigns match I had hopes that Joe could get a longer rivalry out of this – guess I was in fantasy land. Good while it lasted, but ending was flat as a “smart” Joe would simply have rolled out the ring.
  • Worst – between Rollins and the Ambrose match I probably saw less than a minute combined…just don’t need those same old same old match ups…boring

Ending of Reigns/Strowman was lame, lame, lame – this kind of stuff should be on Raw. Like we are supposed to believe in this crap. Match was good for what is was.

Hope to god that Enzo finds a buddy to team with! Otherwise it’s Santino Marella all over again. Could they do a “loser leave Raw” and have Cass hook back up with Carmella? As I don’t see him panning out as a single long term.

Iron man and women’s match were just there.

There is NO intrigue to anything on raw at the moment. The acts I like, they have killed dead -Bayley/Sasha rivalry, 205, Enzo, Finn etc.

  • Best Match: Hardys vs Sheamus/Cesaro
  • Worst Match: Enzo vs Cass

Imagine a WWE PPV where the only clean babyface winner is Heath Slater. Talk about not giving the babyface heat.

But do they really give the SummerSlam main event to an attempted murderer? Unless they’re going to do a three-way with Roman/Strowman/Brock, there is no explanation short of a suspension for Reigns deliberating doing what he did. I know it’s pro wrestling. But when Strowman tipped over the ambulance with Reigns in it? They had a match. But if Strowman won the match to face the champion at SummerSlam, what’s the point of giving him another match with Reigns before that? Unless this was a double-turn and they’re going to have Lesnar come out on Raw and there’s no finish to the rematch on TV….

– Jeff Cohen

Thumbs in middle.

Enjoyed the Iron Man Match, well the last 10 minutes was real good.

Majority of the rest felt like a good Raw.

Ambulance Match stuff really took me out of it. It was so stupid and long. Why didn’t someone just drive the ambulance forward? Anyway, really Vince thing to do and he probably has no idea it turned Braun full face. Not to mention the supposed face threw a temper tantrum, stole an ambulance and attempted murder. And Vince wonders why nobody takes to Roman.

Worst Match: Enzo-Cas. Wasn’t designed to be good but there are more effective ways to do a squash match.

Best Match: Iron Man Match. Main event was fine as the crowd came alive but it was super rushed and the ending was lame.

Thumbs Down

  • Best: Men’s MITB
  • Worst: Jinder Mahal vs Randy Orton

Show was a case where bad booking undercut some good work in-ring in the Women’s MITB match, New Day vs Usos and Men’s MITB. Men’s MITB struggled at first with crowd reactions when Nakamura was taken out. His return and heat was the best use of him on the main roster so far. Styles and Nakamura feels like a special match-up in a way that nothing else they can program on SmackDown feels like.

Corbin winning is blah, heel holding MITB is a boring, played-out trope now (and Corbin is just dull by himself). This feels like when Seamus won two years ago.

Women’s ending made a mockery of their whole selling point of the match being historic. Jinder just has nothing between the ropes, and has the least going for him of any pushed main-eventer I can remember.

This year is going to be a tough contest for me between Jinder and Baron for Most Overrated in the Observer Awards.

– Kevin Chiat

**********

Look. I didn’t have any high expectations for the PPV. Really only thing I was interested in was the Men’s MITB because it had proper booking. And I just knew having Ellsworth ringside for the women’s match would just end up having a screwy finish. And I was right. I completely lost interest after the Woman’s MITB. Having a man’s help to win a woman’s match isn’t how you’re supposed to be showcasing the woman’s division.

So what I legit did, was turn it on mute and put on Okada vs Omega at Wrestle Kingdom and Dominion. I would check back once in a while to see how the PPV is doing. And I was immediately put off after the tag title match. Sure, Usos are heels. But that’s not strong champions if they run off for the countout.

Orton vs Mahal was 25 minutes of boredom to me. You may have enjoyed it, maybe not, I don’t know. But for me, it bored me. We all know WWE has a history of having wrestlers lose in their hometown. So it was so predictable already. Men’s MITB was my certain MOTN. Teasing us with what Nakamura and Styles can do just pleased me very much. I’d give the main event a ****1/4. Very very deserving for Baron Corbin. But the overall PPV, I would give it a 6.2/10.

This is one of the worst WWE pay per views of the year. Most of finishes were awful, especially the women’s money in the bank match, which was a major letdown. Lana is not ready for the main roster and she can’t be led by Naomi who is still green herself. The Ascension being the culprits was awful. The main event was pretty good, highlighted by KO taking huge bumps and the Nakamura/AJ showdown. Pretty terrible overall. Thumbs down.

  • Best match: Men’s MITB Ladder Match
  • Worst match: Breezango VS Ascension

I thought the 5 advertised matches were about as good as they could’ve been, but all of the finishes on the show were just duds. Even the Men’s MITB Ladder match which I thought was one of the top 3 in history, one of WWE’s best matches of the year and I’d probably go ****3/4, the finish was just, Corbin runs in and dumps the ladder over while everyone else takes a nap.

And during the show I argued with some brainwashed WWE fan on Twitter that said this show was better than Dominion because Dominion was nothing but tag matches and WK rematches, and they gave us just as bad of a finish in the main event with the time limit draw. How do people actually believe these things?

I would have given worst match to the women’s MITB or the Tag championship match because of the lame finishes, but the Fashion Police match was pretty bad. Only on good to great match on the show which was the main event. Styles is the best worker in the WWE. Too many video packages that they have aired several times before. Baron Von Rashke was more over than most of the current roster.

I thought the main event was pretty stellar predictable finish but hey what can you do if they book it right Corbin should be a great Mr. Money in the bank and a great future WWE champion.

Women’s ladder match was a complete dump. Sloppy spots all over the place excluding Charlotte’s jump off the turnbuckle.

Waste of Breezango if they wanted to have that match fine but at least have AA come as the real culprits who attacked Tyler. Maybe they’re saving it for SmackDown.

Usos v New day was absolutely fantastic just fluky stupid finish really disappointed that ended a great match.

Lana v Naomi… yeah let’s just skip that and erase that from my memories….

Mahal V Orton was really boring just absolutely boring. I didn’t like it at all.

I personally was very soured by the finish of the Women’s Money in the bank match and for me the show never recovered from there.

I mean the WWE title match was decent and the Main Event was great but I was so disinterested by that point because of my disappointment/frustration with the first half of the show that I couldn’t enjoy them properly.

To quote something I read from Twitter “They gave the women ladders and still didn’t let them break through the glass ceiling.”

I’m not even saying the finish was bad. I just think the timing was. Tbh if this was say the 3rd women’s money in the bank match it’d be fine imo, but for the FIRST EVER women’s money in the bank match to end with a bloke climbing the ladder and grabbing the briefcase seemed very wrong and backwards.

Massive thumbs down I’m afraid.

– Jose Gonzalez

**********

All in all I have to say tonight’s show was a thumbs down.

For a ladder match that was constantly pushed as history making, the finish of the Women’s MITB was ridiculous and more of a regression for women’s wrestling. It was reminiscent of Santina Marella at WrestleMania 25.

That and the finish of The Usos vs New Day match was incredibly frustrating not in a sense of “heel heat” but more so WWE once again having poor finishes on big shows.

It felt like an episode of SmackDown Live at this point.

The Women’s Championship match wasn’t terrible and while Lana is green I don’t think she can be faulted too much with it only being her second match as long as we see improvement in the future. From a logic standpoint, you could argue why Carmella didn’t cash-in seeing as she could have the briefcase taken off her on Tuesday, but wouldn’t she have just been stripped of the Championship as well?

The Fashion Files segment was great once again and surprisingly so was the Great Balls of Fire ad with Ambrose and co. singing Jerry Lee Lewis. It’s still ridiculous that it has that title and that they’re having a laugh when really it should be a serious show with the Brock/Joe match.

I actually enjoyed Jinder vs Orton and think they’ve worked well together in their matches at Backlash and tonight. Even though Jinder shouldn’t really be in this position as champ, I’m happy to not be hating his PPV matches. Orton beating up The Singh Brothers again was funny and thankfully he didn’t nearly kill one of them this time.

It was a underwhelming that The Ascension were the ‘big reveal’ as I was sure it was Chad Gable on the left in that Coliseum Home Video tape. Hopefully we’ll see AA soon enough, but this match, well, happened.

The main event was good with the highlights being the crowd’s hyped response for the Styles/Nakamura fight, KO and Sami once again being fantastic in a ladder match and Styles trying to climb while hanging from the briefcase which is something I’ve never seen before. AJ’s fall was scary and very similar to the one against Rhyno from the Elevation X match back in 2007. A risky thing to do but he seems to fall safe enough.

I saw Rusev’s tweet mid-match and spent the next however many minutes hoping he’d show up (classic trolling Rusev) so I was a bit frustrated about the finish due to that. Corbin winning is fine as it was expected and he’s got some great heel heat from beating up Nakamura during his entrance and winning at the expense of arguably the two most popular men in the match.

THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

  • BEST BOUT: Men’s money in the bank ladder match
  • WORST BOUT: Tyler Breeze and Fandango Vs. The Ascension

THOUGHTS: Another ok show with a great main event. I thought the women’s money in the bank match was good and even though I’ve seen a lot of people angry over the finish I don’t mind because it’s leading to something Tuesday night.

The tag team match was really great up until the finish which I know had to be done to prolong the feud.

The women’s title match was boring and kinda just there.

The WWE championship match was good wrestling but I just don’t care about Jinder Mahal OR Randy Orton for that matter, I was bored through most of the match but I did like the stuff with the legends.

I loved the main event like really really loved it. Everyone looked strong, Corbin taking out Nakamura before the match started was great. AJ hanging from the briefcase and falling to the mat was great, The stuff with Sami and Kevin was excellent and now all anyone wants to see after that match was an AJ V Nakamura match. I would’ve loved Nakamura to win the briefcase but deep down I always knew it was going to be Corbin.

– Gerry Sheedy

**********

The ending to the women’s MITB match was a travesty. They spent so long hyping up how this was a historic match and a breakthrough for women’s wrestling and then ended the match by having a man grab the briefcase and literally had it to a woman.

This isn’t bad because it’s a bad storyline or the wrong person won etc., it’s just a genuinely sad thing to see that they squandered an opportunity to promote women’s wrestling. A woman grabbing the briefcase for the first time could have (and should have) been a historic shot that would be replayed in video packages for years to come but they made a mockery of it.

Overall I was thumbs-middle on the show. While I really loved the crowd and the atmosphere and thought it was one of the more energetic shows in recent months, I think it was dragged down by a heel-centric set of victories and some puzzling match production decisions.

Best match was the men’s ladder match, by a country mile. I thought it was very very good, up until the ending, which still managed to suck all of the energy out of me despite being so predictable it was visible from high orbit.

Baron Corbin is as interesting as 70’s-era carpet, and frankly, I’m disappointed in WWE for producing yet another ending that essentially trolls hardcore wrestling fans in favor of putting heat on one of their home-grown boys. Baron was always going to win; I’m just not a fan of teasing the crowd with a Styles/Nakamura victory immediately prior. Would have been better to have Baron cost Sami the victory, I think, because it would have left a less-bad taste in my mouth, which is somehow a victory standard for this company in 2017.

Worst match was probably the Women’s title match. Naomi doesn’t really do it for me and Lana is as green as they come. The match lacked the athleticism and fire of the rest of the show.

Otherwise, the women’s ladder match was really good, if short. I didn’t care for the shenanigans at the end. I’m assuming it’s leading to Ellsworth wrestling a woman, which isn’t something anyone needs in 2017. Carmella winning the briefcase, however, is something I like; unlike Baron (who is in a similar place in his respective division), I enjoy Carmella’s work and think she’s evolved in a meaningful way since receiving her call-up. But I could do without Ellsworth winning for her.

The tag match was pretty awesome and was probably second on my list for great matches of the night. I thought everyone worked hard and really pumped the crowd. They had some pretty crazy and fun spots that I enjoyed.

The WWE Title match was fine. I just can’t really get that excited for Jinder, who regularly battles Baron Corbin in my mind for the least interesting performer alive. I thought he worked hard tonight, and Randy had more motivation than usual, but ultimately it was just fine, with a pretty predictable ending.

So, in the end, there was some good, but the best of the show was marred by a bad finish, and overall the show had too many heel victories that left me feeling a little hollow.

While it was impossible for the Men’s Money in the Bank match to not deliver with the talent involved — and my goodness did Sami Zayn ever steal the show out there with his big spots — unfortunately, the rest of the show failed miserably and merited a Thumbs Down rating from me.

If this were a normal Women’s Money in the Bank match, I do not have an issue with the finish where James Ellsworth handed it to Carmella. Given this was the first-ever, and you only get one shot at a first impression, that was not the finish to do. Find a better way for Carmella to win; this was a huge mistake.

For leading off the card of the PPV itself after a nothing preshow match with the Hype Bros and The Colons, it set a very bad tone. In fact, Shane McMahon wasn’t even there, so no one intervened, and now we have to wait two nights for the fallout to be addressed by a returning Daniel Bryan. Aren’t PPVs supposed to be payoffs? This was nothing more than an exaggerated SmackDown Live episode.

The tag team titles match was a joke. The Usos’ intentional countout, on the heels of Ellsworth/Carmella, was a terrible decision. After that, Naomi-Lana was not that good, even with the Carmella tease of a cash-in, and got my worst match vote of the night. Then there’s the ever-so-predictable WWE title match. We knew Jinder Mahal would win to continue WWE’s India push, and WWE insists hometown wrestlers should lose way more than win, so Randy Orton had no chance.

When a Miami Vice-themed Fashion Files episode is the best thing prior to the main event — and even their match with Ascension was just a boring filler match — that speaks highly negative of the PPV’s quality.

With many WWE PPV duds in recent, I was actually excited for this one going in. I guess I should have reminded myself this is WWE, and I am a complete fool for having such optimism.

LOVED Mike and Maria’s debut. Instant heat seeker him taking her name. I love it. Lots of ppl say he wouldn’t be in WWE if not for his wife, why not run with that.

Thought Orton and Jinder was great. Close second to the men’s ladder match as my fav of the night.

LOVED the tease with AJ and Nakamura. Please let that be the SmackDown main event at Mania.

Who cares about the Ascension? Love Breezango and fashion files but again who cares about Ascension.

New Day – Usos was great right up until the finish. Lazy booking. Cop out.

Lana was better than I expected. Where is Rusev?!

Thumbs Up!

  • Best Match: Jinder vs. Orton
  • Worst Match: Fashion Police vs Ascension (bad spot for those guys)

This was a fun show made more special by the awesome St. Louis crowd!

I’m seeing a lot of people complaining on social media about sexism with Ellsworth’s involvement in the women’s MITB finish. I think it was just a matter of a typical heel second/manager helping the person they represent get the win.

It was great to see the legends at ringside. Too bad they weren’t used more in the match.

Had to express my distaste for this show, worst WWE has had in the two and a half years since I started watching them again.

Thumbs down!

  • Best match: Men’s money in the bank (but Corbin is the worst-case scenario winner; he did nothing in this match)
  • Worst match: Fashion Police vs Ascension

Finish to women’s money in the bank was garbage. Essentially a man wins the first women’s money in the bank match in WWE history, not to mention how underwhelming it was anyway? Going to be difficult to convince me to watch SD Live on Tues. Styles vs Nakamura is obviously the best direction for SummerSlam, and if they don’t start going that way, why would anyone watch?

– Jerimee Bloemeke

Thumbs down.

I’ve had less than 5 thumbs down reviews since 2010, but WWE was really trying to earn it tonight. 5 bad finishes (3 from interference, 1 from walk-out, and 1 from the wrong guy winning) on a 6 match PPV signal to me that WWE doesn’t care.

  • Best match:  MITB ladder match (men’s). Exciting with good builds for future matchups. The problem is that it missed an opportunity to makeup for a truly lackluster PPV and send people home happy.
  • Worst match: Naomi v. Lana. Hard to watch the women’s ladder match and know that Lana was actually fighting for the title.  Fine for SmackDown.  Unacceptable for a PPV title match.  Having a run-in/distraction after the finishes of those previous 2 matches was unacceptable.

Good work from lots of people that didn’t get their hands raised tonight. A real shame.
Orton in his hometown? They had him lose. In front of his dad. On Father’s Day.

  • Best Match — Men’s MITB
  • Worst Match — Ascension vs Fashion Police (by default)

Just a few notes on the Fashion Police Segment:

Loved the reference to “Coliseum” when they got ready to play the video.

Also, the picture of Michael Hayes with “Wanted ” under his name on the bulletin board. There were a few more inside and funny references that I don’t remember, but it made for a great three minute segment.

An enjoyable show. AS the show went off the sir, did you catch the sign that said ” Boring Baron”? I thought that was creative.

Thumbs In The Middle

  • Best Match — Baron Corbin vs. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler (Money in the Bank Ladder Match)
  • Worst Match — Naomi vs. Lana

Another WWE show saved (well, saved from a thumbs down at least) by an excellent multi-man main event. The visual of Nakamura & Styles moving the ladder was among my personal favorite WWE moments of the year. The match only solidified the fact that I’ll watch any ladder match with Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn in it.

The New Day vs. The Usos greatly exceeded my expectations. I don’t mind the lame heel walkout finishes as much as some do, but this match wasn’t the time for it as this was the type of great match where The New Day really should have just won the belts. The pressure is really on for them to follow that match but this match & feud has already improved the SmackDown tag team scene by about 1,000%.

The women were pretty disappointing overall. I get why they didn’t do that much in the women’s MITB match to not take away from the stunts in the main event but, like with Sasha vs. Charlotte in the Cell last October, this didn’t even remotely live up to the expectations set. It was a perfectly good match though. The finish was a creative way for Carmella to win although her selling is still all kinds of pathetic. Naomi vs. Lana was nothing but still better than that women’s match at Extreme Rules two weeks ago.

Putting Mahal vs. Orton on earlier was the right call. Mahal still isn’t quite up to a WWE main event standard but he was far better here than he was last month in the match vs. Orton. The crowd greatly helped them as well.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors finals fan feedback

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: Ospreay vs KUSHIDA
  • Worst Match: None, nothing I didn’t like

I thought the tournament was great overall. I’ve only followed NJPW closely for a few years, but it was the best BOSJ in that time. I couldn’t agree more with what you have continually said regarding Liger’s usage in the tournament. The first tapes I traded for back in college were of Liger, and I think there are a lot of people in similar situations. Given Liger’s popularity in the few American dates that he’s worked over the last 18 months, him doing well in the tournament might have given a small bump to the streaming service. Though maybe all of us hardcores have already subscribed.

– Brian Reznick

**********

Thumbs way up. Incredible main event. The LIJ match was also very good and the Tanahashi angle was really fun.

Other than that it was a bunch of good matches, enjoyable as NJPW matches always are but nothing special. Expected more from Kenny and Okada but I don’t really have a worst match since everything was good.

KUSHIDA’s post match celebration was awesome.

Thumbs Up

  • Best match: Ospreay/KUSHIDA
  • Worst: None.

Thought Ospreay/KUSHIDA was the best match of the tournament, and third best match I’ve seen this year (only Okada Omega and Okada Shibata were better, in my opinion.) It’s funny because Ospreay has been the focus of a lot of discussion, criticism and praise (deservedly so in the last category I think) recently but I thought KUSHIDA was a little more impressive and honestly he’s probably the big standout of the stacked tournament.

It’s funny because this really combined every aspect of the Jrs. division, with the flips and the technical wrestling, etc. and when compared to the Cruiserweights, it’s like clear what the distinction is, outside of Neville. Personally, I think this was a better Super Jrs. final than the past few years, and outside of doing something more with Liger and maybe not doing the same shtick with Suzuki Gun all the time, I have no complaints about the tournament.

I do think it’s too soon to take the belt off of Takahashi, but I’m not sure how you keep the feud going if KUSHIDA doesn’t win this time, though I’m really excited to see what these two guys come up with this time around, especially since I think KUSHIDA started using the Small Package Driver to win his matches in the tournament, so the counters and set ups for that will be really interesting.

Everyone will probably remember the spots on the apron (rightfully so, because both guys were amazing today) but I think the thing I’m going to remember the most is probably the point where KUSHIDA is going to the top rope and Ospreay grabs his leg, and then KUSHIDA just destroys his elbow. That, along with the Danielson kicks told so much of the story of these two guys who had gotten past the respect stage and were now in the STAY DOWN part of the match, it was incredible.

I’ll stop ranting now, sorry. Great great show, great great match. Can’t wait for next Sunday.

Best match: Ospreay/KUSHIDA

Thought this was a really good show with the LIJ Taguchi Japan 10 man tag match being really fun and exciting to watch. An excellent mix of humor and fast paced high impact action that I believe is becoming a staple match of NJPW. I understand and get the criticism some fans have of the humor spots but I really do enjoy these matches.

All the mix tags were fine. Built towards June 11th show. Makes sense but the show dragged something fierce. For me seeing so much of Okada-Omega in ring has lessened seeing the rematch.

  • Worst match: opener. It was what it was but was boring.
  • Best match: Ospreay-KUSHIDA. I didn’t think this was as great as many. I thought 2/3 of match was real sloppy at times. They missed a lot of moves. The entire finishing sequence made 0 sense. Ospreay beat the hell out of KUSHIDA then he hits the finisher from top rope and finisher for pin. Thought it was real non-sensical. Some of the match was spectacular when timing was on. Could really do without Ospreay swearing so much. Dropping F bombs, B and C word just really lessens his appeal to me. He should be above all that by now.

One match show really. The wow factor was there for main event but again the finish and missed timing I wouldn’t call it anything but very good and entertaining.

– Mike Flynn

**********

Thumbs down.

I’m sure I will be in the minority, but I hated the main event. Both wrestlers are among the best in the world and KUSHIDA may be my personal favorite in New Japan but that was just a series of well executed moves. Instead of doing a 30 minute match they did a six minute match five times.

Did we really need a reverse Frankensteiner on the apron and and detroyer on KUSHIDA’s head? These moves looked really dangerous and meant nothing in the match. I think the time is over for praising wrestlers for dropping people on their head. The new style of match where people kick out of 15 finishing moves is going to have bad long term consequences.  **1/2

– Russell Griffith

**********

This Ospreay vs KUSHIDA match was so amazing. It’s 5 stars no doubt. The little things in the match make it for me. Ospreay had me when he did the space flying tiger drop with no cartwheel cause his arm was too hurt. When he dug his elbow into KUSHIDA’s rib cage for the abdominal stretch was so great too. Then when they did the did the closed fist punch spot that took it over the top for me, the intensity was amazing. The reverse hurricanrana on the apron was insane too.

The crowd was so into this as well and how could they not be. Tournament finals in Japan have the best atmosphere. It’s like a NCAA tournament championship or Super Bowl. You can feel the intensity in the air and it’s so much better than a best of 7. Unless it’s a game 7. WWE should take note.

I was also so impressed by the show on the 31st. That Ricochet vs. Scurll match was just awesome and Hiromu vs. Ospreay too was so great. These bigger “PPV” shows on NJPW seem to always deliver unlike WWE with Backlash or inevitably with Extreme Rules, when they end I feel so empty like I wasted hours and got no bang for my buck.

– Kyle Jaworski

**********

I thought the show was great overall. The first few matches were really very good. The first match had big men being big men but it was fairly forgettable.

The next match I think was the Ishii 6 man. Kawato really worked and got a lot out of little and Jado sucked. He looks to me like someone who’s playing at wrestling and isn’t believable or sufficiently surreal to be funny. I thought Kawato came across as well really. He got a lot out of a moveset that is very standard and it definitely helped that he was interacting with Ishii.

The next match got off to a great start with Desperado and Volador working very smoothly together the match was very good and Tiger had a cool sequence with a few of the Gun guys.

War machine were great and Hansen damn near killed some folks. The Fale spot with ACH where he stomped on him was very brutal looking. ACH’s gimmick is something I go back and forth on. His DB fusion jacket is a nice nostalgic callback to me for my childhood but at the same time sometimes he can be too goofy. Here he came across as so nuts I couldn’t not find it funny. Tanga Roa sold a rana were he knocked into his brother… It sucked. Tama I actually like. He’s my mini Roman.

I despise Taichi and he was in the match for too long. He actively makes me less interested in a match or feud. Suzuki is great as is Goto and Yoshi.

I fell asleep in the Naito match… not the matches fault I was tired after work but that’s what happened. Naito is my favorite NJPW guy so lets just say i thought it was good.

Okada has amazing chemistry with Omega and the spot with the umbrella was great. Okada looked great. Omega looked great.

The main event is one of my favorite matches of the year. The selling was magnificent. My favorite thing in this was when Ospreay had KUSHIDA in the octopus. He pulled his injured leg to tighten it and winced cause it was injured and Ospreay is amazing. KUSHIDA was fantastic in this match too his kicks looked brutal and he worked very well. Me and the guy I watched it with were looking for the selling and I thought it was great.

The shooting star onto a KUSHIDA hung on the ropes was a great spot done safely as KUSHIDA took very little of Ospreay’s weight HOWEVER KUSHIDA didn’t land on the ropes and had to jump back on them. I don’t really like numerating matches cause I like different matches for different reasons. Ospreay has improved so well. I watched his flippy match with ricochet (first one) and he was using the same insults and reactions a lot relying on a certain pattern to sell he’s hurt or angry. Now he’s loud and expressive. He reacts in different ways and really gets the match over. Just that is an amazing improvement.

Automatic thumbs up because the main event was that great. The rest of card was fine basically. Scurll managed to come off as a big time star in a match involving Omega and Okada. Goto and Suzuki interaction was good in amongst all the Suzuki-gun nonsense. The Ishii and Kawato stuff in their 6 man was really good.

  • Best: Will Ospreay vs. KUSHIDA
  • Worst: Yano/Ishii/Jado vs. Makabe/Tenzan/Kawato

A surprisingly great show. Even though it was mostly multi-man matches everyone turned it on tonight. The main event was epic & a fitting way to end the most consistently action packed BOSJ tournament I’ve ever seen. Will Ospreay stole the show both tonight & throughout the entire tournament. He’s cemented himself alongside Okada, AJ Styles & a motivated Kenny Omega as one of the best in the business right now.

Random tech note: I watched the show in Japanese instead of English because on the English feed everything was blocky & choppy while the Japanese feed was HD & smooth. Don’t know if it was just me but it was weird.

– Nick Randall

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: KUSHIDA vs. Will Ospreay
  • Worst Match: Volador Jr. & Jushin Liger & Tiger Mask vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Taka Michinoku & Desperado

For as great as the main event match was, and I loved it, what I’ll remember from this show ten years from now is the post-match celebration with a jubilant KUSHIDA hoisting his BOTSJ trophy and ROH World TV Title belt high in the air. He was surrounded by fans who were genuinely happy that he won. It was a special moment that made for a fantastic visual.

New Japan embraces the kind of organic fan reaction that WWE seems to avoid at nearly all costs. It’s quite the contrast. Ditto for WWE robot-style interviews versus the genuine emotion from KUSHIDA, both when he won Block B and then again tonight/this morning.

Don Callis continues to impress me on English color commentary. I really liked Steve Corino in the role and figured he would be hard to replace, but Callis is outstanding. Corino did a better job of saying move names that Kevin Kelly couldn’t be bothered to call, but Callis makes me legit laugh out loud frequently. His comic timing and delivery are impressive. And, more importantly, Callis treats the product seriously and puts over positive aspects about the wrestlers.

Though, despite Callis being great, I simply can’t watch the big matches live without Shinpei on the Japanese feed. Shinpei legit calls more English language moves than Kelly, and it’s remarkable how his emotion can add to a match. Even something as simple as Shinpei freaking out over Minoru Suzuki teasing the Gotch piledriver on Hirooki Goto adds to the drama of the match — and the perception of the danger of the move.

NXT TakeOver Chicago fan feedback: UK title match steals the show

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne
  • Worst Match: Triple Threat Women’s Title

As always NXT delivered an enjoyable Takeover event and once again pretty much said sorry main roster go ahead and try to follow that.

First match was good as Roderick Strong gets a victory over Eric Young. Nice to see Strong put in a good spot and hopefully he moves up the ranks.

The UK Championship match between Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne was fantastic. Loved this match. Great stuff including having Jim Ross on commentary which is always a bonus. Even though the UK special the other night was enjoyable, this match blew all of that show away. Was a little surprised for the title change since you would think they would save that for the UK shows.

Triple Threat Women’s Match was good, only listed it as worst match by default. Asuka retaining not a shock. Not sure anyone is ready to take it from her. Ember Moon I guess is possible, but really there is nobody in Asuka’s league in NXT.

Bobby Roode vs. Hideo Itami was a great title match and turned out better than I thought. Was weird that this didn’t go on last, at least until I saw why they saved the tag team match. I assume they are building Drew to face Roode. Not sure who else is getting a title shot.

Tag Team Title ladder match closes the show and it was another good match and the show closing angle was very strong. Not too many teams left in NXT. They need to rebuild the tag team ranks.

Overall a very good NXT show and once again I don’t expect Backlash to live up to this.

  • Best: Bate vs. Dunne

  • Best Match: Tyler Bate – Pete Dunne
  • Worst Match: Asuka-Riot-Cross

Last few shows I’ve gone in with low expectations and have come away thoroughly entertained. Speechless about the U.K. Title Match. JR was great and Nigel really upped his energy and that combination is gold. For my money, the combination of a breathless match, crazy and appreciative crowd, and JR and Nigel on the call: it was 5 star on the enjoyment level from a fans prospective.

Amazing ladder match which I thought started off a little slow and clunky, but had a slow boil and ended with another epic performance for DIY. Love seeing Ellering laid out, but still giving the thumbs down sign and inspiring AOP and taking the bump like a pro. A great heel turn, but I am sad to see DIY go.

I see so many similarities with Bobby Roode and the Miz. Great ring personas, over as hell, matches are good, but the in ring performances just leave you wanting a little more.

Roderick Strong had his best match in NXT so far and I think eventually will be the one to get Roode. Good match.

– John Hotsinger

I’ve never written one of these but after an amazing Takeover I felt the need to share my thoughts.

I believe without question that match of the night has to go to Bate vs. Dunne with bonus points for the fact these kids are both under the age of 25. They have YEARS to grow and learn and they’re already putting on (in my opinion) five star matches. I don’t feel this often but I felt honored to watch that match, it was a masterpiece. Absolutely incredible.

“Worst” match of the night was the triple threat but honestly, any other show it would have been just fine. A bit sloppy but told a great story and the fact Asuka pinned them both? Stroke of genius, she looks like a monster. I think with some time Ruby will be a mega-star and Nikki will have a great career. Side note: Ember cut a solid promo on the pre-show, she seems to be getting much more comfortable speaking in front of a camera.

Lastly I want to talk about that ladder match, the match itself was fantastic. The finish with the slight no-sell by AoP bugged me but all in all it was solid. The post-match turn however, that was masterful. My favorite (least favorite…god damn Ciampa) heel turn ever. No Triple H being a puppet master with the Shield, not telegraphed like the still wonderful Festival turn, and not “sudden” like KO and Zayn. My heart still hurts, and I’ll never be able to forgive Tommaso for what he did…and I know this stuff isn’t real. It hit me on such an emotional level, I’m kind of in a daze.

I can’t wait to see where they go from here with Ciampa and Gargano, I hope we see a long program between the two that carries over onto the main roster.

Best match: UK title

Maybe the WWE fans watching this show will see how much better pro wrestling from outside the States can be with that UK title match stealing the show. Not even a main event ladder match could come close to the heat that match had

– Erik Yonker

**********

Wow, what a show.

Leading with this: On a 5 match card I cannot pick a worst match. I mean granted if you cut most WWE/NJPW shows to only it’s top 5 matches when they usually do 8 or more maybe they’d feel similar, but wow, they maxed out every minute of content tonight.

Best match was the UK title match with Bate vs Dunne though. My favorite single of the entire night was them down after a spot but too close together and Dunne just starts throwing barely backed up shots. I just loved that moment: He’s in range, SO HIT HIM!

But everything was good! Roderick Strong not only outsmarted 3 guys in the opener but I’d say outman’d them. With a stacked group of potential title contenders on the show right now he demanded the next spot.

Women’s title match picked up that “follow that” gauntlet from the Brits and said “damn right we will!” Final spot wasn’t perfect but good enough to gloss over given that they nailed everything up to it.

NXT title match, apart from the fact that it was the semi-main event spot definitely spoiling the result was a great match. Itami worked Roode’s arm so well I damn near talked my way into Itami winning with an Anaconda Vice in Chicago, which would have been great but the right guy won. Itami won back some luster he’d lost while out though so win-win creatively.

And yeah, great tag title match, kept me guessing, brilliant whoever brought up that end of show corner graphic early while we’re waiting for the heel turn, I relaxed, Ciampa attacked. Other than Ciampa and Gargano now having to try and get 205 Live over now everyone in the match was more interesting when it was over. Yes that’s a lot easier to do when guys can get “promoted” from your brand, but it was still done wonderfully.

If not for Owens/Styles, I don’t think I’d even watch tomorrow’s “main brand” show, would be too much of a letdown.

Reaction to Takeover: “This is awesome!”… literally.

I was left with a post-Thanksgiving meal nap satisfaction after NXT Takeover went off. The event had everything: good psychology, amazing story-telling, a hot crowd, triumph/tragedy, etc. NXT never ceases to amaze me. The “big brand” needs to follow in NXT’s footsteps.

Biggest Takeaway: The Storytelling.

It’s time people understand what makes Takeover so special: HHH and William Regal. These guys have amazing synergy, and they’re consistent. The WWE has the most amazing talent it has ever had, and NXT is taking advantage of it — through wrestling and storytelling. I know that makes me sound like a mark, but let’s not forget, Raw and Smackdown are getting the same wrestlers that blow the roof off of every NXT event. They should be getting the same reaction/results at the big PPV’s. NXT’s wrestling is amazing, but their storytelling is top notch. Tonight, we saw heels have the overwhelming success in the ring. But guess what? I’m ok with it! They did it right, and left something to be desired. The same cannot be said for Raw of Smackdown

  • Best Match: Bate vs. Dunne. There’s really no need for me to type anything. You have eyes.
  • Worst Match: Triple Threat (Women’s Title)

It stinks that I have to point out a flaw for Takeover. All in all, there weren’t many bad moments. If I had to pick, I’d give it to the triple threat match. There were a few missed spots, but nothing egregious. I’m giving it a thumbs down for two reasons: 1.) Ember Moon was not in the match. 2.) They had to follow Bate vs. Dunne. The crowd was so hot for the U.K. Title Match, so it was impossible to top that.

– Jordan Kirkland

**********

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: Authors of Pain vs DIY
  • Worst Match: Asuka vs Ruby Riot vs Nikki Cross

When Asuka is on the “worst” match of a card, it’s a hell of a card.

Chicago crowd did not think Itami looked like a guy who could win the main event. Roode made him come close, but barely. Where they put Itami now will be interesting. 205 Live would be a waste, but at his size he’s not really a top contender. He’s no Nakamura to the audiences.

– Jeff Cohen

Thumbs up on the show overall. The ladder match was good with some nice spots but the UK title match stole the show no doubt.

I wasn’t crazy about the Women’s match which is usually the case for me during NXT events.

I liked the tag title main event. That division has always been great for NXT so why not showcase them. Also like the heel turn. DIY has probably run their course as the team that has a ton of heart but always comes up inches short.

– Jared Aldridge

Big thumbs up for the night.

Only match I can kinda complain about was the women’s match which I found to be quite sloppy, especially Ruby, I think she needs a bit more confidence and some work. Nikki needs a 1-on-1 with Asuka I think. All in all that match wasn’t amazing for me, I give it 2.75. They can all do better.

Best match was easily the UK Championship match. 5 f*cking stars, nothing else to say.

Most heartbreaking moment since Owens turned on Zayn, which is the reason I don’t ever close my network tab when the credits roll. I need to see a fade to black. This one hurt.

Personally, I gave the matches tonight 4.25, 5, 2.75, 4.5 and 4.25 (in order down the card). Excited to see what you give the UK match, I really hope you do give it 5. I don’t see how it could have been any better.

– Jake Smith

I give this Takeover a thumbs up.

1) Strong vs Young great way to start off in Chicago knowing that Strong has deep roots there is amazing great opener
2) Dunne vs Bate I don’t need to say anything this one got me speechless match of the night for sure the U.K. Scene has grown a lot and this gave the world a gateway to it phenomenal match
3) The women’s match was good…it wasn’t great but especially after the U.K. Title match I wouldn’t expect the next one to be close….decent contest Asuka is clearly above everyone else and with the recent signings the women’s division will get stronger and with more experience for Cross, Riot, and Moon the division will be top notch again
4) The NXT Championship match was better than I expected considering the contrast in styles and Roode is one hell of a seller and performer and Itami proved that he’s ready to reclaim his spot with this match. It was great story telling good finish I think the right man went over good match
 5) The tag titles match going on last is a respect to DIY( now formerly DIY) and how much of an impact they’ve had on the brand considering the size differentials and the people involved they made this a great match only problem would be the slow climbing of the ladder but that’s just me knit picking besides that it was great all the spots were phenomenal to the double ladder jump to the German through the ladder(oh and Gargano is one tough SOB for taking that ladder shot) it was great story telling.
5.5) The aftermath was smart by WWE to put the ending credit on the bottom left of the screen thinking it was over then Ciampa just unleashed and destroyed Gargano….I know these guys will have great matches together but it’s a shame to break them up I fee they could’ve really done well in any tag team division particularly Smackdown with matches vs the Usos and American Alpha and the New Day but I digress

***** only bad note is that I was hoping that WWE would’ve signed Adam Cole by now and shown him on screen or in a physical way this would’ve been the perfect crowd to introduce him to…..unless his eventual signing and debut are totally awesome this is the only down of the night

– Vicente Vitela

Thumbs up. Show was awesome. Enjoyed all of it. Show with not much hype totally delivered from top to bottom.

  • Worst Match: Women’s match. It was good, finish was cool but crowd was gassed after Dunne/Bate
  • Best Match: Dunne/Bate. Simply amazing. For my money, 2nd best match of the year behind Okada/Omega. Thought it had it all. Great technical spots, smooth transitions, innovative offense, near falls and believability. Know it’s great if you mute the crowd( That was super hot), it still is a classic. ***** for my money.

Ciampa heel turn was masterfully done. Not a bad thing on the show.

Enthusiastic thumbs up with the match of the night going to Dunne vs Bate.

Fantastic crowd that shows if you give the audience great matches, they’ll reward you every time.

Perfectly executed heel turn by Ciampa and the production assistant who put the show logo in the corner moments before the turn should get a little bonus. Loved Ciampa’s body language and facial expressions. Looked like. Man who didn’t want to do what he was doing but knew that he HAD to.

WWE Payback fan feedback: House of Horrors match

Thumbs in the Middle

  • Best Match: Jericho vs. Owens
  • Worst Match: House of Horrors

Show started off fine with a decent tag match with Gallows and Anderson losing to Enzo and Cass. Then came the Miz TV segment with Balor which actually wasn’t bad and the crowd so far is into the show and usually they are quiet for this stuff on the kick off show.

Main show starts with the US Title. Good match here and with a surprise win for Jericho winning the US Title and going to SmackDown, but of course if he won’t be around that means he’s losing it pretty fast and won’t be on TV anyway. So either Owens wins it back right away or they move Owens to the WWE Title picture after Jinder gets beat. I still don’t get how Jinder is the top contender and guys like Owens and AJ are in the US Title hunt, and guys like Tye and Shinsuke are in a holding pattern. They bring these guys from NXT and then take all the goodwill they had and throw it out for nonsense.

Neville vs. Aries was good until the lame DQ finish. In this day and age how the no title change on a DQ is still a thing is crazy given that the ref knows Neville grabbed him on purpose and the opponent gets screwed. They need to come up with some other idea.

Hardy’s vs. Sheamus and Cesaro was another solid encounter with the Hardy’s retaining and poor Jeff lost a tooth. Then the heel turn for Sheamus and Cesaro which I guess they had to do to keep this going.

Bayley vs. Alexa and the curse of being the hometown hero was next with Alexa winning the Women’s Title. Good match and kind of surprised Sasha wasn’t involved somehow.

Then came the real horror of the show, this pre-taped garbage with Orton and Wyatt where they apparently borrowed someone’s house of horrors that is only a few miles from the arena. This was real bad stuff even by low budget horror standards.

Rollins vs. Joe was another solid match, but I think people were starting to get tired especially after that Orton and Wyatt stuff.

Oh boy we get to see the rest of Orton and Wyatt now. Orton is miraculously fine. Jinder and his boys came to play and Wyatt wins a non title match. Wasn’t the original purpose of this rematch from Mania because Bray was owed a title rematch? I guess he’s not getting one. If I was Bray I’d be mad. Oh well. Let’s hope that puts this terrible feud to rest once and for all.

Roman vs. Braun is the main event and it was good. A big win for Braun who should win if he is going to challenge Lesnar soon. Apparently the thirty day rule for title defenses doesn’t apply to Lesnar or anyone anymore.

A few bad things on this show, enough to make it a middle of the road neither here nor there event. Creative needs to really step it up.

Thumbs in the middle with 3 good matches, though I want to thumbs down it.

WWE Payback 2017 aka WWE Flat Finishes aka WWE No Momentum for Mania Winners (save Rollins)

  • Best: Seth vs. Joe ***3/4 (ahead of Neville-Aires and Strowman-Reigns at ***1/2)
  • Worst: First half of Orton-Wyatt was * and actual match was a dud so 1/2*

Bayley could have won or could have lost via cheating.. but to lose clean?? They are treating the women the same as the men now flattening them all out into a muddled and meaningless midcard.

Next up: WWE Rise of the Jobbers

Thumbs Up!

Liked most of the entire card, thought both Cole and Graves were really clever and engaged on commentary and did a nice job. Mildly disappointed in Aries/Neville due to the finish, plus they seemed to be a step off in spots. Dug the main event and was cool with the “coughing up blood” gimmick, but would’ve preferred if they treated him as legit injured instead of the “John Wayne walk off under his own accord” BS.

Best Match: Jericho vs. Owens — Crowd was hot, clean-cut KO is such a great heel and I thoroughly enjoyed the fingertip callback. Thought they were gonna steal some of Scurll’s finger break gimmick for a bit since it’d be new to this audience lol!

Really wanted to like Joe/Rollins more than I did, but they book every Rollins babyface match working his bad knee and during almost all of his comeback, he’s using his bad knee for offense and the psychology takes me out of it because it: A) Makes Rollins seem like he’s a clueless babyface using his injured body part that’ll easily be exploited (Which is why you’d never see a UFC fighter intentionally expose their injured body part mid-fight) and B) Rollins then goes back to selling the knee, which dilutes the sell-job since it mustn’t hurt THAT much, since he’s still using it….I dunno, it drives me nuts lol.

Worst Match: Orton vs. Wyatt — Far too silly and pointless, doesn’t get anybody over except maybe the production people who all work hard. Sounded like the pre-taped stuff killed the live crowd. Plus-side, I thought Orton looked more badass out of his normal short ring trunks.

Overall, enjoyed most of it, everybody worked hard and it was a breeze to watch compared to Mania!

  • Best Match: Joe vs Rollins
  • Worst Match: House of Horrors

House of Horrors was the worst of all things WWE, in particular the goofy background music. This makes me kind of dread the Hardy’s Broken Universe in WWE because they almost certainly won’t understand what made it unique and fun, rather than cringeworthy. Truly awful, awful stuff.

Loved the brutality in the main event. Joe v Rollins was very good; more than anything it makes me wish Joe had been there 8-10 years ago.

  • Best Match: Jericho vs. Owens
  • Worst Match: House of Horrors

I thought the first three matches on the show were excellent. Main event and women’s match were fun. Really good crowd for the whole show helped too.

I was probably in the minority, but I actually liked the Wyatt vs. Orton match at WM. I’m a big 1970s horror movie fan so the special effects on the ring reminded me of movies like “Willard” and “Squirm.” It was funny to do, but that should have been the end of the gimmicks in their program. Overall horror matches/special effects matches don’t work like tonight and they haven’t since WCW did it in the 90s! If I want to watch stuff like this there’s plenty of low budget and indie horror movies on Netflix.

Thumbs Down

  • Best Match: Owens-Jericho (maybe ***1/4)
  • Worst Match: Other than House of Horrors, Bayley-Alexa (*1/2)

First PPV since Extreme Rules 2015, and I’m somewhat regretting taking the 3 free month offer even if I get Great Balls of Fire for free.

Most of the early matches were OK (long Raw TV matches)/slightly above average but nothing outstanding.

Alexa is a great over-the-top character, but her wrestling didn’t impress me. Amazing how badly Bayley has been done given how much she was hyped coming out of NXT. If she has to lose for some reason, she should have just been KO’d rather than having the hope spot with the small package. Losing to a DDT (I don’t care if it’s Alexa’s finish) a minute or two later just made her look bad.

House of Horrors was just sad, from the nice white walls and white sheets on the furniture to the “horrors” not making sense (is Randy Orton’s character that of a family man/father? Did he inhale the mind-altering substance from Batman Begins to explain his visions?); maybe if Bray had set the house on fire at the end it would have meant a little something, but he just turned on a red light. Ooh, scary. Felt bad for the live crowd.

On paper, the guy who retired Undertaker lost in his next PPV match. I know it’s Roman, but wow.

Maybe I’m just meant to listen to you and Bryan recap the shows rather than watch them myself.

All in all it was a far better show than I thought it would be. It did what it could with almost across the board weak or once-strong-but-already-fumbled storylines. A thumbs up, a 45 degree angled up but an up nonetheless.

Best match was the tag title match. I don’t know about the finish and I really can’t see Sheamus and Cesaro as heels, even just beat-people-up ones, but there was a lot of frenetic energy that I find is frustratingly absent from the normal tag matches on main roster weekly broadcasts, which are often so predictable as to be just simply draining.

Worst match was, I don’t know… I guess the House of Horrors Match. The pre-taped segment was corny but in a good way. Leave it to Orton to no sell a freaking heavy duty appliance slammed on to him. The finish is a very strange way for Wyatt to pick up a win, and really does so much more for Jinder Mahal than it does for him. Wyatt really needed a good clean win or he just looks bad, especially since he seems to have completely forgotten that this match was supposed to be his rematch.

Overall, I’d say this show is a Thumbs up. I thought every match aside from the House of Horrors match was at least solid, with a couple of great matches to bring this show up to good quality. The best match was Strowman vs. Roman. It was hard hitting and a great bash between two powerful wrestlers. Worst was the House of Horrors match. It failed in every remark. Although I like it when WWE tries something new, this missed the mark completely. It wasn’t campy fun, it wasn’t creepy, intense, or anything aside from a boring waste of time.

– Michael Jahrling

**********

While both go-home shows for this pay-per-view were unexciting, I thought Payback was mostly solid. With the exception of the House of Horrors match, I thought all the matches were either decent or really good.

Jericho vs. Owens was the match of the night for me. This was either on par or better than their ‘Mania match depending on second watch of both matches. Jericho targeting Owens’ hands was an entertaining sequence you don’t see much of anymore and I like the title change to throw people off. I think Y2J drops the belt Tuesday though.

I would put Aries vs. Neville as the best bout had it not been for the DQ finish. It combined the best aspects of cruiserweight wrestling (and these two) into one bout: strength, high-flying ability and technical prowess. Hopefully, the ending sets up a third match between the two. They’re so good in the ring.

The House of Horrors match was the worst one on the card. The first part was just a dimly lit house that needed a Swiffer cleanup. Nothing really memorable about it and I found myself laughing at the dolls instead of being creeped out. The second part wasn’t really spectacular either, and Bray had to have outside help in his own match to win. Even though Bray won, he doesn’t look much stronger than he does before.

I give this show a thumbs up.

The show over all was meh. It wasn’t awful, but for some reason I just wasn’t hyped for the show.

I liked the Owens/Jericho match, as well as the tag match. There wasn’t any match I particularly disliked but what in the world was that House of Horrors match? This first part in the house was interesting and fun but the in ring portion was so flat and boring. The Roman/Strowman match was okay. The blood spot was poorly executed and it took me a second to figure out where the blood was coming from.

Again, the show was meh. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t awful.

Thumbs up

  • Best match The Hardys vs. Cesaro/Sheamus
  • Worst match Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton

Well Bray/Orton seems to have worst feud of the year wrapped up and possibly worst match also…that match was an atrocity.

This was a difficult show to judge. Terrible build up to it but most of the in ring was pretty good.

I would go thumbs up as I did enjoy most of it but the problem with Brock is just feels like it’s missing that true consequential main event for the title.

  • Best match: I really liked Joe-Rollins but finish was flat so I’ll go with Jericho-Owens. Really good match and story telling.
  • Worst match: Neville-Aries were having a good match but it had a flat finish. House of horrors I didn’t mock and hate as much as most. It was stupid but I was glad they attempted something different.

I’ll go house of horrors as worst match. Did think they did a solid job with building Aries-Neville story, tag title picture and Braun.

Thumbs Down.

  • Best Match: Sheamus and Cesaro vs. Hardys
  • Worst Match House of Horrors.

Honestly at the end of the show my first thought was that this show sucked, but realistically, the show was ok to very good right up until the House of Horrors match, then it dove off a cliff. I HATE that they beat Bayley clean in her home town for no real reason and instead of building someone up to matter again, we’re back to feuding just to feud, but the match was good.

The Owens-Jericho match was good, and I figure they’ll have a rematch Tuesday on SmackDown to finish the storyline off, so I wasn’t really bothered by that, other than it would be nice for them to put someone over strongly for once that wasn’t Roman. Aries Neville was quite good, but felt like it ended abruptly. Bayley Alexa was good except the ending.

House of Horrors might have been the worst thing I’ve ever seen them do on an event. The entire room burst into laughter seeing Randy shirtless in the back of a limo waiting and then the fact that the limo guy waited for them to finish and it wasn’t the worst part of what happened says a lot. If they were in San Jose, I think Randy showed up at 6 PM local time to Bray’s house but it was night there. Weird, almost like WWE doesn’t pay attention to detail.

Seth/Joe was disappointing to me. You talked about how Finn just felt like a guy now for whatever reason, that his presence was hurt or something, and I absolutely feel the same way about Seth. Rollins went from being one of if not the best wrestlers in the world to barely being in the top ten wrestlers on his own show. He’s slower now, he doesn’t work great as a face as it stands now anyway and i don’t think his promos help, and the matches since he came back the first time were no great shakes and now they’re worse. I didn’t like that he beat Joe, but if they’re building him up to be the next face to challenge Brock or whatever, that makes sense, and it isn’t too bad that they built up a face besides Roman a little.

The finish to the House of Horrors was almost worse than the start. It’s a testament to how silly the Jinder stuff is that no one really cared when he came out outside of initial surprise, and it makes you wonder who was supposed to benefit from all of this because Bray comes across as a goober needing help to beat down a dude he threw a refrigerator on in his own match, Randy lost to a bunch of goofs after getting beat up for what felt like an hour, and Jinder and the brothers felt like they barely managed to do anything to Randy after he’d been beaten and abused for so long. I can’t understand why anyone thought any of this was good.

Braun vs. Roman was exactly what you’d expect, but worse, and they did the injury cop out finish which is fine, except that they couldn’t help themselves from having Roman look strong at the end by running Braun off. It’s just typical at this point, and one of the reasons it feels like you’re better off not watching Raw.

– Jonathan Beckner

MOTN: The Hardyz vs. Sheamus & Cesaro. It was a brutal match with the genuine injuries of Jeff’s tooth and Matt’s head, and the wrestling was great, and the heel turn at the end was what their feud was really needing.

Good matches: Y2J vs. KO, Alexa vs. Bayley

Bad matches: The House of Horrors match was easily one of the worst matches of the last few years. It had no logic to it, it had a bunch of errors, it was edited like a student film, it seemed like somebody was trying to make a spooky flash game or video on Movie Maker, and it was genuinely awful. I have no idea why their feud didn’t end at WrestleMania. This was god awful.

Thumbs Down

  • Best Match: Alves vs. Cote
  • Worst Match: Weidman vs. Mousasi

Mess of a card. Seems weird that two unranked fighters are competing against each other on PPV, even if one of hem shows some promise. But that’s not a big deal compared to how messed up the Weidman situation is. Maybe NY’s a hot market, but they gotta be skeptical about going back there after all the crazy stuff that’s happened.

I don’t know what happens to Anthony Johnson when he fights Cormier. I have no idea why he would try to grapple, even if he did take the first round. That’s just so bizarre. That said, Cormier is one of the best fighters in the world and could be top ten ever. One loss to Jones, but look at the guys he’s beat and how dominant he looks in beating them.

– Colin Faucher

**********

I went to UFC 210 last night in Buffalo and here are a few notes:

  • Best Fight: Alves vs. Cote
  • Worst Fight: Usman vs. Strickland

There were scattered empty seats throughout the arena, particularly on the lower level, where there were a few different rows that were almost completely empty. My guess would be ticket brokers weren’t able to unload them, but I’m not familiar with the local market. The four upper deck sections behind the big screens were either mostly empty or completely empty.

The crowd was really into Anthony Johnson all night and Cormier was booed all night. I still don’t get it. One person in front of my excitedly exclaimed that he booed him because he gets upset at the boos, even though he likes Cormier, which is odd.

Everyone was murmuring during the fight about how inexplicably Johnson performed (I’d say Johnson’s game plan, but apparently that wasn’t the game plan).

Luke Harper was at the show. I saw him on the concourse just after the Alves vs. Cote fight.

The booing was so loud during the Mousasi interview, I couldn’t hear a thing that was said.

Desmond Green was over huge with the crowd.

When I left about five minutes after Cormier exited, Jon Jones had a long line for pictures and was still there taking them.

The only decision that surprised me was Chookagian vs. Aldana. From my view on the floor, it looked like in the last two rounds Aldana was landing really clean punches and Chookagian was largely missing or grazing her. The crowd was happy for Chookagian to win since she is local.

    Thumbs down.

    • Best match: Probably one of the prelims I didn’t watch.
    • Worst match: Cormier-Rumble

This show was built on two fights and neither one delivered. At least with Weidman-Mousasi they can blame Mirgliotta & the NYSAC for ruining the fight.

Rumble showed up with the dumbest gameplan we’ve ever seen from someone not cornered by Edmund. I love watching Rumble, but tonight he showed no heart or intelligence & crumbled under adversity. He left his neck exposed for way too long like he was just looking for a way out. Rumble is a front runner that falls apart under pressure. He might as well retire if those are the performances he puts on in title fights.

    • Best Match: Okada vs. Shibata
    • Worst Match: Jr. HW Tag Team Title Match

Okada vs. Shibata was incredible. I don’t think its at the level of the Omega match, or as unique and memorable as the Suzuki match, but still excellent. Another classic Okada match in a title defense — the question now is how good of a match he can drag out of Fale?

Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA was kind of a let down cause of the time it got, but also it makes for a good story, so that’s cool. Maybe they figure if they only let Hiromu work five minutes or less he won’t have time to kill himself out there.

Sabre Jr. vs. Goto wasn’t amazing — even though they’re both great workers, it’s a weird match up. Still alright though. War Machine vs. Tenzan and Kojima didn’t start great but really picked up. Nice to se the belts on War Machine. Hanson is top notch and does some incredible stuff. Seems perfect for Japan.

Barring the Jr. HW Tag Team match, the rest of the card was solid. LIJ vs. Taguchi Japan was pretty good. I don’t see Juice beating Naito, and I’m not sure he’s at the IC Title level, but dude has had some good matches lately. That Pulp Friction spiked Naito hard and looked brutal.

Thumbs up. It was a one match show, but that match was insane good that is that is has to be thumbs up.

    • Best Match: Okada/Shibata
    • Worst Match: IWGP Junior Tag title match. It sucked.
    • Disappointing match: Goto/Sabre. Interference ruined what was heading to a good story.
    • Exceeded expectations: War Machine/TenCozy. Solid and enjoyable clash of styles and age.

We are truly in an amazing era with NJPW and might even rival AJPW in the heyday — Okada, Shibata, Naito, Omega can all pull out 5*+ matches with a supporting case of depth – Takahashi (imagine seeing him as supporting cast!), Goto, Suzuki, Ishii.

     – Andrew Hall

    Thumbs in the Middle

    • Best Match: Main Event
    • Worst Match: Jr: Tag Champion

Horrible booking throughout. In fact, New Japan has been horribly booked since the day after the return of Suzuki. The Suzuki/Okada match killed Suzuki as a serious contender, once he couldn’t win after torturing Okada for forty straight minutes. The junior tag matches went from being four star plus to 1/2 clusters. Because they have too much ‘talent’ they use Elgin and the Bucks less and the first hour of the shows are completely skippable.

The Sabre/Goto match was very good until the interference but having Zack lose after the all that just makes him look like a complete geek. It led to a pull apart between Goto and Suzuki but Suzuki just had a pull apart with Yoshi-Hasi an hour earlier.

No one wants to see Fale/Okada again. Having a a quick win every once a while as a surprise is a great idea but why Kushida, who really doesn’t have the star power to take the quick loss, and why deny us one of the two most anticipated matches? Main event was excellent or else this would have been a big thumbs down

    – Russell Griffith

Thought it was a great show. Crowd was on fire throughout the whole show. A match that exceeded my expectations was the IWGP Heavy Tag match. I gave it ****. Worst match was IWGP Jr Tag which had too much interference.

Now onto the best match of the card which was Shibata/Okada. Match went almost 40 minutes and Shibata beat the hell out of Okada. Crowd were all in favor of Shibata. I gave it *****. I think the right move would have been Shibata winning. The crowd would have blown the roof off if he won. In my opinion the best overall wrestling show since Wrestle Kingdom in January.

      Huge Thumbs Up

      • Best: Okada vs. Shibata
      • Worst: Gedo/Jado vs. Suzuki-Gun

If Okada vs. Omega was a 6 star match then Okada vs. Shibata should be 7 stars IMHO. It was an absolutely amazing main event — the MOTY in my opinion so far and perhaps one of my new favorite matches ever.

      WWE WrestleMania 33 fan feedback

Just wanted to provide some feedback on WrestleMania. I gave the show a huge thumbs up since I thought it was a great card from start to finish. I would have to say the best match of the night was the tag title ladder match won by the Hardy’s, and the worst match of the night would probably be the Andre memorial battle royal since after so much build up, it was treated as a throwaway match on the undercard. But otherwise it was just a great weekend of wrestling. Hall of Fame on Friday, a great NXT show on Saturday and an awesome WrestleMania tonight.

Just some highlights that I enjoyed since it would take too long to go over a 12 match card and 5 hrs of action, lol! But even though the show ran long, it really didn’t seem like it since it was well paced for the most part and was just a good night of very good matches combined with great storytelling.

*I completely marked out when the Hardy’s entered the tag title ladder match and won the titles. Didn’t see that coming. I hope they can return to using the Broken Hardy’s gimmick. I think that they will since WWE has better resources and lawyers then TNA, lol.

*Was a cool moment to see John Cena propose to Nikki Bella after their mixed tag match. Another swerve I didn’t really expect, was a nice moment.

*Was hoping Bray Wyatt would retain the world title over Randy Orton as Bray deserves a good title run, and Orton again as champ is not appealing

*Was surprised to see Bayley retain the women’s title as I thought for sure Charlotte would win the title back. Charlotte is really above and beyond everyone else in the women’s division on either brand and her star is shining bright.

*Cool entrance of the night was Triple H putting himself over, lol. But at least Rollins got the win as it would have made no sense for Triple H to win the match. Just great ring entrances and visuals for everyone really. The Mania set was just awesome in general and made for a good visual on TV

*Great way to end the night with Undertaker retiring the way he did and Jim Ross calling the match. Would have preferred Taker winning the match, but still a great legacy of 22 and 2 which will never be touched anyway, as it would take another 20 years to build on that record. I’ve followed the career of the Undertaker from the very beginning when he was the Master of Pain to his “Mean Mark” days in WCW to his debut at Survivor Series in WWE. If this is really his retirement match, he went out on great terms with the main event of mania and leaving his trademark hat and ring gear in the middle of the ring. And such an awesome moment to see JR come out and call the main event, it was just the complete package of a great main event with the storytelling of the match.

Great weekend of shows, great night of wrestling, plenty of WrestleMania moments, was just a great night to be fan and enjoy a good show.

      – Jon Southerland

      **********

Thumbs up, mostly for the out-of-the-ring stuff. No match was really memorable and it fact almost all could have been better. The match order was a mess. Whoever put it together should be drug tested. What the hell they were thinking? The entrances were fine but not spectacular. The New Day were pretty much an afterthought. If anything this show proved that having two titles in the same division is just bad. The Smackdown titles all came across as second rate, especially the WWE title which is the historical one. Wyatt vs. Orton didn’t need the title at all.

The Women and the tag were totally overshadowed. I like the brand division but instead of two set of tags have one show with a Tag title and the other with a Trios Title (after all, some of their hotter acts are 3 or more people). One show with a women’s singles champion and the other with a women tag champions (they are going to hire more women anyway). One brand with the Heavyweight title and the other with the Cruiserweight (elevated as a real world title for lighter wrestlers like in boxing or MMA) and the IC title (so you can have main events guys fighting for it on the brand).

      • Best Match: I guess Styles vs. Shane, at least it was the like I enjoyed the most, maybe because it was right after a mostly boring pre-show.
      • Worst match: Smackdown’s women match.

      1. Neville vs. Aries. This same match on another show would have been great, here it was just really good. Aries took a mid-90’s AJPW bump in that German suplex. Move of the show! ***1/2

      2. Battle Royal. Boring for the most part but served its purpose. My only complaint is that Rawley needed to be double teamed in order for Gronk to level things up, the way they did it came across as like Rawley, the babyface, got unnecessary outside help. Still, they kind of flip a finger to Shaq with it. **

      3. Ambrose vs. Corbin. At first I thought that the Smackdown women sneaked into the main show in exchange of this match but after seeing it I didn’t feel bad for them at all. Just boring. Ambrose reached a level and can’t get beyond it. Corbin is just weak. He should be in NXT. He and Alistair Black had pretty much the same gimmick so his days may be numbered since Black showed more in one match than Corbin ever did in his career. *1/2

      4. Styles vs. Shane. So the main show’s first match has the best performer of the company against one of the authority figures, goes close to twenty minutes, has a referee bump, and all kinds of crazy spots. Not your typical opening match to say the least. That been said, it was great. Normal business for AJ but incredible for Shane. He wasn’t that good but at least didn’t mess it up. I’m going on a limb. ****1/4

      5. Owens vs. Jericho. This was exactly what it needed to be. Even the finish coming out of nowhere was necessary to continue the feud. ****

      6. Bayley vs. Charlotte vs. Banks vs. Jax. Totally rushed and anti-climactic. Now more than ever Bayley winning on Fast Lane makes less sense. They literally wasted like one full year of storylines in just a few months. Next on their brilliance plan to make home fans angry and the women division pointless is Bayley losing in San Jose. At that pace Charlotte will break Ric’s “record” by next year’s Mania. ***1/4

      7. Hardys vs. Enzo & Cass vs. Cesaro & Sheamus vs. The Club. Delete! Delete! Delete! This match was the opposed of the Cruiserweight match in the sense that that was a great match but the crowd took it down; here the match was just good but the crowd made it great. Enzo & Cass big moment was always better for Brooklyn anyway. The Smackdown tag division REALLY needs helps now. Revival and DIY debuting on Tuesday at least. ****

      8. Cena & Nikki vs. Miz & Maryse. Match was fine. Lawler was great. Post-match was perfect. Even Cena’s long proposal gave the feeling that for a moment he was going heel and turn on her which made their reaction came across better. The crowd pretty much took a break after this. **1/2

      9. Rollins vs. Triple H. So-so match, the crowd never got to it. Everything that they did was well executed but nobody believed that HHH had a chance of actually winning. He is starting to get the same reaction that Taker had after the Lesnar match, people care about him but not his matches. For a No DQ match this needed more brawling and less in-ring stuff. Funny, of all the 3 guys from The Shield that he has faced Triple H had the best match with Ambrose and that was on a B-show where the result was more than obvious. ***

-They REALLY need to get rid of those WM concert, they all suck. It’s a waste of time that can be used for the undercard, or at least a well put together backstage segment.

      10. Orton vs. Wyatt. JBL nailed it when he said that the people there were stun and didn’t know what to make of it. Yeah, they didn’t know who the hell was face or heel or who to care for. What a waste of the main championship! Bray’s very first title reign lasted until the very next PPV, not exactly historical. With the benefit of hindsight, the best possible WWE Title match for this show was Styles vs. Cena. On this show that match would have been a 5-stars match. But once Cena went with The Miz, the best title match option were AJ vs. Randy, or AJ vs. Bray vs. Randy in a triple threat, or Bray as a full blown face chasing Orton and having a Mania moment by winning; of all those scenarios they choose the weakest option. The only that can be saved from this is that maybe they are making Wyatt into the reverse Undertaker in the sense that he always lose at Mania so he is creating a new streak. If that’s the case they should start mention it from now on to start a storyline for next year. If they build it for a couple of years they could get to something because people actually care for those types of things. Every time that he hits his finisher fans would react to it thinking that he finally did it. Anyway, this was no better than a typical Smackdown main event. **

      11. Lesnar vs. Goldberg. Probably the best five minutes main event match ever. ***1/2

      12. Naomi vs. Lynch vs. Natalya vs. James vs. Carmela vs. Bliss. I bet that they will now claim that the women were the Smackdown main event. The reality is that this was a glorified pee-break. Another cheap trick to protect Reigns. *

      13. Reigns vs. Undertaker. If this was Taker’s retirement match why it wasn’t promoted as such? I thought the job of a promoter was to promote and hype things up, maybe I’m wrong. Say what you want but at least Bellator gets the most out of its legends. So in Vince’s mind Roman retiring Undertaker is going to make him a bigger face. Like “he is going to take away from them what they like the most and they are going to love him for that”. Good luck! Another wasted opportunity to create a hot heel, and therefore a legit top face for the future. I kind of understand Vince logic, he once turned his biggest babyface (Austin) at the wrong moment and his business never recovered, so he is afraid of doing the same mistake again. The problem is that Roman is closer to the 2001 version of Triple H than to Austin’s. Somebody in the inner circle needs to tell him. Match was fine but lacked pace. The botched piledriver spot didn’t help either. That seemed like a key spot to get the fans going. Anyway, thank you Taker for all the greats moments.***

What happened to Bryan? Are they are so afraid of him walking away next year that they didn’t showcased him on their biggest event? Is Samoa Joe missing? He is ratter large to pass unnoticed. Does the rest of the cruiserweight division missed their flight? Or they all just decided to watch the Walking Dead season finale together since they weren’t booked anyway?

      • Best Match: Bill Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar
      • Worst Match: Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

Much like last year, I went into WM33 having already seen so many great matches over the weekend that I was there more for the spectacle than anything. And, to that end, the show delivered. It’s a unique brand of people-watching, especially the bizarro Halloween costumes.

The set looked great, especially with how they incorporated the lights and the LED screens. It was first-rate. I also enjoyed the ring facade above the ring lighting, complete with ropes that turned red for Raw matches and blue for SD Live.

Strangely, they were recording Kevin Owens after his match as he was walking back up the ramp, then when the camera cut off Owens stopped and double-back to the side exit.

The show went way too long, and I’m not one to normally complain about a long PPV. It didn’t bother me last year, but especially at an outdoor venue on a very hot Florida day, the sun likely sapped some of my strength. Thank goodness next year’s show will be in a climate-controlled dome in New Orleans.

I’ve never booed a match as much as I did Orton vs. Wyatt. They are the two most overrated wrestlers in the company, at least in my estimation, and WWE somehow managed to make it even worse with the stupid special effects.

But what I’m happiest about from all of this weekend’s great fun was snagging good tickets for both NJPW shows in Long Beach. Not front row like I had wanted, but close enough to have a great view.

      Thumbs Up

Thought it was a very good show, that at times felt like a great show, & in a smaller building would’ve been a fantastic show, in those moments. Superb production & visual, some cool entrances, as is common with manias, & from an in-ring standpoint was a case of the good, the bad, the ugly & the downright depressing.

As is always the case with big stadium shows, tough-task generating good heat with such a large area, & tough to get huge chants going with fans so far apart, unable to hear each other in different pockets & challenging to sync-up, not to mention view & the way sound travels. All this of course intensified with no roof as the energy just escaped up in the air. With such a large venue show, the theory is you’re better off going slower & building to big moments in the match, to increase the likelihood of getting pops out of the whole building – which is all neither here nor there.

In the case of Shane-AJ, Jericho-Owens & Rollins-HHH, I think if you put any of those matches in the Barclays Center, All State Arena (or whatever the building in Chicago is called nowadays), or number of venues for that matter, they’d get a well-deserved 1/4*- 1/2* bump up. As happens often, to a great extent it was pretty much all or nothing in crowd response, but it did seem one of the quieter mania crowds in recent years, off the top of my head.

      Aries vs. Neville ***1/2
Thought it was a good match that would’ve been better in a different setting, did lots of nice stuff, but also didn’t attempt to compete with future matches on the show from a spot & false-finish volume standpoint, by instruction you’d presume. Little surprised Neville won, honestly.

      Andre Battle Royal **
Found this a real-scratcher from a booking standpoint. I mean, I got it in-terms of pub with the Football Player fella & his friendship with Rawley, but expected Strowman to win, & personally would’ve liked to have seen a victory for either Zayn or Harper, with the thought it would’ve been a welcome momentum-builder, & Strowman didn’t need it, & felt they were the other possibilities. On top of that, the order of eliminations.

Not so much Strowman, as if he wasn’t going to win, not a bad idea to get him out early to take emphasis off his exit, to decrease possible damage, but not too early, obviously. And in the case of he & Show, it promoted surprise & intrigue with the winner. But more Ziggler, Usos, American Alpha & such, going-out so early, & Dain & Jinder being left with the upcoming winner. Harper & Zayn not lasting longer I can understand, to give yourself time to distract the audience from their exits, & increase the chances of the big pop for Rawley.

      Corbin vs. Ambrose **1/4
Were definitely problems with flow & a bit of clunk, but thought it was ok for the most part. Surprised Corbin didn’t win, but with it being relegated to the pre-show, probably better to do a title change on TV or a future PPV, if it’s coming.

      Shane vs. Styles ****
Thought it was a very, very good match. Enjoyed the physicality, some spectacular stuff, good layout, Shane added some new tricks to his arsenal, worked very hard. Solidity wasn’t always there, but thought it was really fun.

Best Match: Owens vs. Jericho ****
Thought they had a great match, but struggled to fully get the crowd. In a different venue I truly believe this would’ve been a fantastic match. Worked very hard, lots of nice & creative stuff, great layout, really enjoyed it.

Bayley vs. Nia vs. Sasha vs. Charlotte ***1/4
I came out thinking something must’ve gone long & they had their time cut, it seemed quite the rush job. Some spectacular stuff & pretty solid, but again, rather rushed. Relieved Bayley won. Went in thinking she really needed to win with them hitting you over the head with the Sasha storyline, as if she would’ve successfully screwed her over here felt it would’ve done Bayley no favours whatsoever.

Thought perhaps Bayley may beat Sasha in the final two, then Sasha raise her arm & whatnot while giving subtle facials to suggest she wasn’t being totally genuine, before turning on her tomorrow. Interested to see where it goes & I don’t think anyone could make a good case as to why Bayley couldn’t have won her first title here after what has unfolded.

Enzo & Cass vs. Cesaro & Sheamus vs. Good Brothers vs. The Hardys ***1/2
Hardys arrival sent the place berserk, fantastic moment. Bit too much of a hectic affair to have a high-quality Ladder Match, but thought it was good stuff. Enzo & Cass seemed careless with the ladder at times & Cesaro was incredibly lucky regarding his incident with the ladder. Noticed Matt didn’t play-up the Broken gimmick too much, but at the same time didn’t ignore it. Interested to see what happens going forward. Also, Raw is absolutely rammed with babyfaces right now, need some folks to turn.

Miz & Maryse vs. Cena & Nikki **1/2
Really just a standard tag match where got heat on Cena from the get-go, built to the hot-tag & then went to the finish fairly quickly. There were plenty of matches on the show that were attempted show-stealers though, it was all about the aftermath, it was fine & with what little they did they got far more reaction than a lot of matches. Happy the crowd didn’t boo the proposal.

      Triple H vs. Rollins ****
Some silliness with the lack of selling of Rollins’ knee from the off-set with him walking down the gigantic ramp with no problems, then leaping into the ring, given all the drama during the build, but I let it slide & thought they had a very, very good match, although Rollins left a lot to be desired as the babyface in peril.

      Wyatt vs. Orton **3/4
Didn’t mind the special effects on the canvas the first time, second was a little silly, third was ridiculous. Thought it ruined the tone of the match & disrupted the flow & momentum. Aside from that, I thought it was ok but underwhelming to say the least.

      Lesnar vs. Goldberg ***1/2
It was a quick, four move affair, but they executed it well & thought it was really fun while it lasted. Was pleasantly surprised, enjoyed the physicality, intensity, Goldberg gave it his best, it flowed well & was fairly solid. Was what it should’ve been – two heavyweight boxers throwing bombs from the first bell till someone hits the canvas. Think this could’ve easily gone last & people would’ve been satisfied, but of course it couldn’t with the aftermath of the main event.

Bliss vs. Becky vs. Mickie vs. Carmella vs. Natalya vs. Naomi **1/2
Not a lot to it. Was a real rush job with them urgently trying to get their stuff in, but thought it was ok. Think putting it back on Naomi is a good move. Say what you will about her, but she’s got charisma, some flashy moves & people dig the gimmick. With that short few week period where they pushed her hard, she’s really garnered some support, & gotten more over quicker than a lot of other people. I say go with her.

Worst Match: Reigns vs. Taker *3/4
Thought this was really depressing & saddening. Such a shame. The layout was there, but with Taker’s condition the rhythm, solidity & fluidity wasn’t, plus there were some misunderstands. He tried & I enjoyed his vulnerability towards the end, but he just didn’t have it in him & this was a terrible way to go out. Aftermath was fantastic though, very special stuff. Also, given Reigns’ expressions towards the end looks like the turn isn’t coming.

This mania I had very little expectations but it delivered. It was long sure but I have no issue with that once a year if it’s enjoyable and this was. 100x better than last year.

Thumbs up for sure. No blow away match but almost all delivered entertainment.

      • Worst match: miz-cena mix tag. For the build it was just flat and proposal came off real robotic and cheesy.
      • Best match: cruiser match was terrific. I really enjoyed Owens-Jericho, tag match, triple-Seth, taker-Roman was a good story. Goldberg-Brock was booked perfectly. Aj is so freakin great that match was actually really good.

I will go with ladder match just because of the pop for Hardys and how into it the crowd was. It peaked here.

      Good luck getting some rest,

Hey, Dave. I’m not sure if you’ll hear this from other viewers but my cable provider cut off Wrestlemania exactly at the five hour mark, so it ended abruptly on a freeze frame of Roman Reigns with fireworks above him and Taker lying on his back staring at the sky. The entire retirement ceremony didn’t air and I had to read about it on your site. A very poor end to the Deadman’s career for Canuck fans.

      Ah well. There’s always YouTube.

      • Worst Match: Orton vs Wyatt

Show was entirely too long. The projector gimmick in the Wyatt match may be the dumbest special effect they’ve ever done, and that’s saying something. Hardy’s return was a highlight. Killian is awesome, so unique. He needs to be on the main roster yesterday. Absolutely loved the Brock match, perfect for what it was, violent and it got the crowd going crazy.

As much as I hate to type this, THUMBS DOWN.

      • Best Match:  Hardys win the title, not because the match was great, but the Hardys return was the most exciting thing on the show.  (I do wish the Hardys were going to Smackdown.)
      • Worst Match: Mixed tag match with marriage proposal ending.  Wrestling is best when it feels real.  And a telegraphed marriage proposal did not feel real.  At all.  And the match was not good.  At all.

Honorable mention for Performance: Roman Reigns.  He was not in an easy position.  I actually felt sympathy for him when it became clear to me that the torch was being passed to him was the story of this match.

It was very good to hear Jim Ross again.  A very professional job.

Goldberg’s match was not good, but it wasn’t a disaster.  But he looked great.  I think the crowd would have been more behind him if he had one longer match before this one.

But missed opportunities abound.  Undertaker’s retirement was wasted.  Flair’s retirement was much more emotional because it had a great build that was reality-based.  I missed the AJ/Shane & Owens/Jericho matches.  Of what I saw, there was not a great WRESTLING match on the whole card, even though there are a lot of great wrestlers, both on the card (Styles, Cena, Rollins) & not on the card (Samoa Joe) in WWE.  AJ Styles should have had a real opponent.

I hope lessons are learned from this.  I started watching at about 8:20, and the show STILL felt very long.  And a few great promos don’t equal a great build.  Cena, Miz, & HHH all did really great promos leading up to their matches, but I still didn’t care about their matches.  I like HHH, but his in-ring WM career should be over.  Same with Shane.  I don’t really know what to say about the show.  It felt flat, and not just because none of the titles mean anything.

Nevertheless, I have high hopes for the next 2 days of TV.  I hope Kevin Owens is figured prominently in future plans.

Thumbs up. Show was waaaaaay better than I expected based on build/how unwatchable RAW is/WM 32.

      • Best match: Tag Team 4-Way.
      • Worst match: Battle Royal. Has a random celebrity gimmick ever sold 1 goddamn ticket to a WWE event? Somehow Mojo attained more apparent nepotism than the McMahons on this show by knowing someone important. 30 hard-working wrestlers more or less jobbed to an NFL player. Also, Jinder overachieved in this match. Guess steroids is still the best way to get ahead in this business.

Also not impressed by Wyatt vs. Orton. Even with the cool gimmick, this did not feel like a WWE Championship match.

Undertaker vs. Roman wasn’t great as a match either, but Roman carried it pretty well considering. Jim Ross was also as great as ever, the highlight being his save of the dumbass rope break that pervades this promotion. I guess that’s what you get when you have a monopoly and you don’t have to try.

Also convinced AJ Styles could get a 3-star match out of Dana Brooke at this point.

Wow that was a long show.  Not the best wrestling ever, but worthwhile for the memorable moments.

Good start with the Aries vs. Neville Cruiserweight Title, although I hate when they establish things as not worthy by having them on the preshow.  How about doing a quick preshow of no matches and just have everything on the main show maybe.

Battle Royal was next and it was pretty bland even by basic Battle Royal standards.  Thought Zayn or Strowman made the most sense for the win.  Mojo is fine, but they did nothing with the participants during the match to establish anybody as more than a group of jobbers  That’s a pretty lousy send off if Big Show is finishing up as he claims.

Was really surprised at the IC Title being on the preshow and even more surprised that the title didn’t change hands.  Pretty basic match.

The main show starts with Shane vs. AJ Styles.  Enjoyed this one.  Some good action and Shane always delivers some big moments.  AJ really is Phenomenal. Hope he gets back into the title picture now.

Jericho vs Owens was next.  I felt like they were putting some of the better stuff on early.  Good match and Owens won which I expected.  A lot of the matches seemed to kind of just end abruptly.

Womens four way for the Raw Title was next and again not a bad match, but the finish seemed like it just happened.  Bayley retains and I assume Banks will finally go heel to give Bayley a new opponent.

Raw Tag Titles were next and the tease of New Day coming out to enter the match but instead bringing out the Hardy’s was fantastic.  Good to have them back and giving them the titles was the right thing.  Best surprise of the night since they didn’t bring anybody else back or really have any interference in most of the matches.  No Hogan or Rock or Austin or anybody this year.

Mixed tag match was pretty basic, like what’s been on TV lately.  Cena and Nikki win as expected and they did the proposal.  Is this going to air on Total Divas or do at SummerSlam like Randy and Elizabeth.

Rollins vs. Triple H was a good match.  No Samoa Joe and no sign of Finn Balor as well.  Rollins wins and now he will probably get attacked by Triple H’s destroyer tomorrow.

Wyatt vs. Orton for the WWE Title was really pretty lame.  Not much to it and Orton again kind of wins abruptly.  Not sure if they were rushing because the show was going so long.  Could have been much better.  Time to move this guys away from each other.

Goldberg vs. Lesnar was what it needed to be.  Longer than the previous encounter, but still short and each guy hit the big moves and Lesnar picks up the win and the title.

Smackdown Women’s Title was nothing special especially this late in the show.  Naomi wins which was nice.  No surprise entrants after all the teasing and having the former women competitors in town for the weekend.  Guess they just were their for the Hall of Fame.

Glad to see and hear Jim Ross for the final match of the evening with Taker and Roman.  Not a great match, but you could see Taker was ready to be done.  This still probably have the most emotion of any match of the night and even though Roman won he didn’t get booed out of the building and Taker was given a proper send off leaving his gear in the ring.  Thank you Undertaker.

      Thumbs Down.

I’ve never submitted a “thumbs down” for a PPV before because there was usually SOMETHING that made me glad I watched. Not the case tonight.

I hope someone has a tally of how many times the word “distraction” was used during this PPV. I hate distractions in matches. I really hate them repeated on the same card. I really really hate them repeated on a PPV. No excuse for that.

We had a main event that didn’t really occur.

We had a women’s match with a main event feel — and then it had a run-in (which wasn’t a DQ) which turned INTO a “distraction.”

The rest of the card involved under-utilizing talent. Rusev, Cesaro, Zayn. I’m not arguing with the wins/losses they received. But these were poorly constructed matches that didn’t make the most of them. Zayn, for instance, could have done a lot more for Joe.

Lastly, I’ve got to give credit to Roman Reigns (again). He built a match with Strowman. I did not expect that, but I should by now.

There’s supreme irony in WWE refusing to put over Ric Flair, arguably the greatest wrestler of his time, when he was over the age of 50. And then giving its Universal title to 50 year old Bill Goldberg, barely a professional wrestler even during his heyday.

WWE also destroyed most of its booking logic of the Raw Women’s title. First Bayley started a quest to become champion and beat Charlotte on Raw, ruining her chance at winning the title and being coronated at WM. Then Charlotte was undefeated on PPV for 14 months, leading most to believe Sasha would cost Bayley the title at Fast Lane. Instead, Sasha’s help backfired and Bayley retained — meaning Charlotte’s streak is broken, Bayley is still champ, Sasha is still a babyface, and Nia was even beaten for good measure to leave everything muddled.

Hey I didn’t even mention that Braun Strowman was beaten and the Undertaker didn’t make an appearance to challenge Roman Reigns.

      – Jeff Cohen

Not only was it incredibly boring, the booking was terrible. Every character on the show came off worse than before the show. Goldberg got booed. Owens was weak. Strowman lost for no reason. Roman was booed even worse than the start after winning. Charlotte’s ‘streak’ was broken for…

      • Best Match:Neville vs. Gallagher
      • Worst Match: Goldberg vs. Owens (even though it was what I expected)

This show was fine, but not great and not terrible and really did nothing for me as it relates to WrestleMania minus putting the title on Goldberg. There was no tease of Balor or Undertaker (well Lawler hinted of something about it with it’s my yard stuff on the post-show). So I guess everything should get going tomorrow on Raw.

Pre-show match with the Cruiserweights was fine for what it was. Basically like watching a 205 Live match. Faces go over. Tozawa has his grunt getting him over to some of the crowd. Wish they get could get more of the crowd into the Cruiserweight stuff. The Milwaukee crowd was actually pretty good with a few exceptions.

Joe vs. Zayn was good, but not the outstanding match I was hoping for. Joe winning was the obvious choice. My guess is for Balor to return tomorrow or shortly to put those two together for Mania cause otherwise I’m not sure where they fit into things.

Tag Team Title match was entertaining. Glad to see the Champs retain. I’m guessing a multi team match at Mania. Really still weird that the most promoted team the New Day won’t be wrestling at Mania, just hosting and talking about ice cream.

Banks vs. Jax again not a bad match. Was surprised with the outcome however. Again probably the multi person match at Mania. Have a feeling it’s going to be a lot of multi matches at Mania to try and squeeze everyone in.

Cesaro vs. Jinder was fine, basically a Raw match although usually Mahal doesn’t get that much time. Cesaro wins as he should. Not really sure the point of this and does anyone want to see Rusev vs. Mahal feud? Don’t think so.

Big Show vs. Rusev was also fine. Show wins and I guess all these guys are headed for the Andre Battle Royal.

Neville vs. Jack Gallagher to me was the best match on the show. It was a lot of fun and it had the right outcome. So Neville vs. Aries at Mania? Or will it be another multi person match?

Reigns vs. Strowman was a good match although again I did think Braun was going to win, but again Reigns should be strong if he is facing Taker. Not sure what happens to Braun again other than maybe the Battle Royal.

Bayley vs Charlotte was good, but I would have saved Charlotte’s big loss until Mania. Banks didn’t turn heel here, but assuming she probably still will soon.

Kevin Owens vs. Goldberg was what I expected especially since it started at two minutes to 8. Would have liked to at least let them have a few minutes, but I get it. I still would have opted for Owens vs. Jericho for the title at Mania. Goldberg having the title for one month with no title defenses and then losing it makes no sense to me. Then it goes back to Lesnar who won’t defend it much either, but I guess he’ll drop it to Strowman or Joe maybe.

Well onward to WrestleMania which will hopefully be more exciting.

      • Worst match: The entire card, including the preshow.

Thoughts: The show was practically telegraphed long before the PPV, with minor details telegraphed during the actual event. There were no real surprises or true swerves. This PPV is not at a December to Dismember 2006 level, but the consistently bad writing of Raw as a whole since the brand split really came through tonight. For one example of many, they had a perfect WrestleMania moment brewing with Bayley pinning Charlotte clean to end her unbeaten individual PPV streak. Instead those were ruined on a ho-hum Raw and this PPV, respectively. I fear for WrestleMania if this PPV is any indication.

Show wasn’t great, but not terrible. Putting the belt on Goldberg seems foolish bc all it does is essentially make it a hot potato between him and Lesnar who won’t be at shows. Owens has been the only thing worthwhile on Raw and now he’s lost the big belt before the big show to a guy who won’t be there in three months, you’ve hot shotted every title in the company in two months, storyline it makes zero sense to make Owens into super bad ass and have him lose, especially after he turned on Jericho bc of HHH and then you have him lose the first time he doesn’t have help, so he looks like a chump and a fool for essentially a match people wanted to see anyway.

It’s a waste of everyone involved. I understand they want to make the biggest match they can for Mania, but this is why their belts mean nothing — they change all the time, the only people who matter when they hold them are the ones who won’t be there long, and the ones who hold it for a while are never booked to look strong. It’s just sad.

WTF was that? They build Braun for a year and he loses clean. The only true babyface, Bayley, needs cheating to win to breaks the heel’s long streak. Cesaro needs distraction to beat Jinder Mahal? They need to fill time so Joe and Sami get 10 minutes so we can get Jinder on the show. They actually protect Owens but at the expense of the only match that matters at WM, making Goldberg look like an opportunist, rather than a killer.

      Thumbs In Middle.

Mainly because my expectations were so low for this show but I actually found it an enjoyable show. The crowd made it feel much more like a real good SmackDown vs. a PPV show but I thought the wrestling and storyline progressions were solid. Main event and Orton/Harper were both very good. This was a show that should have been over at the 2.5 hour mark rather then 3 plus.

Unlike Jim From Virginia, I was not super excited for three women’s matches but I thought Nikki/Natalya until the lame finish was a really good match. Feel bad for Natalya as she is so talented but just used to get others to look good in the ring and she did. This was best I’ve ever seen Nikki Bella look.

      James/Lynch was a solid women’s match.

Naomi/Bliss was a little sloppy in a few spots, including the finish but it was fine.

Tag Team Turmoil match was fun. Actually thought after the Usos beatdown that they may actually go with the Ascension winning so they did a good job. American Alpha are really good but they just aren’t connecting on the main roster like they should. Hooking them up with Kurt Angle would get them there.

Harper/Orton was a really good pro wrestling match. Built nicely and did the job to show Harper should be a main eventer on SmackDown.

      • Worst Match: Kalisto/Crews vs. Dolph. When it was Dolph and Crews it was fine. Crowd was oddly into this match and into Dolph. However, it really annoyed me when Kalisto came limping down then did all sorts of lucha things fine then half-heartedly would grab his back.
      • Best Match: Elimination Chamber. Really entertaining match. Looks like Corbin-Ambrose program coming out of it which I like. Corbin has come a long way in ring. Styles-Cena just work incredibly well together. Miz’s facials in the pod was really great. Wyatt pinning Cena clean was surprising. Solid job of rehabbing Bray as a monster. Great transition to the finish.

Glad I did not drink as Kevin Dunn’s camera work gave me the spins.

For the first couple of hours, this was a glorified SmackDown episode. With American Alpha pretty much beating every team on the roster, either they have to create a new tag team from parts — perhaps Dolph Ziggler teams with Baron Corbin — or they do another sort of gauntlet for WrestleMania.

Luke Harper had a great match, but no matter how the announcers screamed that “win, lose, or draw, he’s proven he can be a main eventer,” he’s still slated in the middle as a guy who can’t win the big match.

      • Best Match: Luke Harper vs. Randy Orton. Loved the story! I think this is for sure Luke Harper’s best singles match.

      • Best Match: Elimination Chamber, Harper vs. Orton.
      • Worst match: Kalisto & Crews vs. Ziggler

This show was far better than I expected it to be, honestly. Everything feels like they at least found their footing or understood the story they needed to tell. Overall, a very solid follow up to the Rumble, which was the best PPV they’ve done in years.

They did everything they could to fix the bad idea of the Ziggler handicap match, I guess, but apparently they just decided they want to have Ziggler lose all the time and look bad doing it. This is the same guy six months ago was in a feud at SummerSlam for the World title. He also supposedly threatened a man’s life on television a month ago and I forgot he was even in the Rumble until he was out there.

All that aside, the show was good, all the women’s matches were solid, if a bit sloppy. Guess is a multi-woman at mania, maybe a ladder or something? Seems weird to have this many moving pieces, but I don’t know what they’d do otherwise.

I’m really hoping they give AJ the big showcase he deserves, too because while Bray won the match, this felt like the AJ Styles and friends show. Elimination Chamber matches are usually fun, but honestly seeing AJ come up with new moves to do in all of WWE’s gimmick matches is one of the best things about the product right now. I love Owens and Cesaro, but AJ has to be the best wrestler WWE’s had at least since Bryan was fully healthy, right?

Speaking of Bray, while it’s been kind of a foregone conclusion since you reported the card, it was nice to see him get a win, especially pinning AJ and Cena. They’ve overlooked Bray it seems from time to time, but just looking at his WrestleMania appearances, he faced Cena his first time, Undertaker his second, verbally sparred with the Rock last year, and this year he’s walking in as champ and feuding with Orton. That’s a tough four-year run to beat.

Seems like they’re setting up Corbin vs. Dean for the IC belt, too. Anyway, the only big question left it seems like is what they wind up doing with AJ, and to a lesser extent with Joe and Zayn, for Mania. I’m going to be disappointed if they take the belt of Kevin and put it on Goldberg, but that seems inevitable at this point. I will say, it feels ridiculously hot shotty that they’ve had the WWE Championship belt change hands two times in a month, we might have it change hands again at Mania, and the Universal title, presumably, is going to shift three times after Mania. Seems silly.

      • Best: Elimination Chamber
      • Worst: Ziggler vs. Crews/Kalisto

This show continues the SmackDown exclusive show trend of having a solid yet totally forgettable undercard followed by a great main event involving AJ Styles.

I thought this was the best Elimination Chamber match in years, probably since the 2011 Elimination Chamber PPV. I’m glad Wyatt finally won the title but the timing of it feels out of nowhere and kind of “too little too late.” Unless the writers have an awesome story in mind for Wyatt vs. Orton, I really don’t understand them booking this as the WWE title match, but then again there is a lot I don’t understand about WWE booking.

      • Best Match: Chamber
      • Worst Match: Mojo vs. Hawkins

SmackDown in my opinion continues to deliver for the most part despite having one hand tied behind their back for the most part with a much smaller roster of stars than Raw.  There are certainly some things they can be doing better, but they seem to be trying.

The worst part of the show wasn’t wrestling, it was the Carmella & Ellsworth nonsense. No offense to Mr. Ellsworth, but I don’t find a reason for him to be employed. His short stint has run its course. Now he needs to fade back to the local wrestling he was doing before.

Mojo Rawley vs. Curt Hawkins while nothing special was better than I expected. It wasn’t the quick squash I was assuming they would do. Mojo rightfully wins.

The main show kicked off with Mickie James vs. Becky Lynch. Very solid match here and I do think James should have gone over in her first big match since returning, but it was good. I was quite tired of Otunga trying to say James had ring rust from being out of action for seven years. Finally JBL chimed in and corrected him saying she had been competing elsewhere. Also apparently Otunga doesn’t have the WWE Network cause he would have seen James compete quite well a few months back at NXT Takeover.

Apollo Crews & Kalisto vs. Dolph Ziggler was pretty basic.  Why they even put this match together is beyond me. They essentially buried all three participants in this match. Ziggler is a heel who never wins and Crews is a babyface who is now getting boo’d and can only win on a fluke or with a partner. This feud needs to end now. Rethink what to do with Crews before he ends up with Jack Swagger in the SmackDown basement or wherever they stashed him.

Tag Team Turmoil was pretty good. Although at this point since American Alpha has run through everybody on SmackDown. What can they do next? If they use any of these teams for a title match at Mania it’s going to seem pretty lame. They really need to bring in a new team like the Revival or somebody to freshen things up. Even move the Shining Stars over from Raw where they are doing nothing would be good.

Nikki Bella vs. Natalya had some good action. Wasn’t expecting a double countout finish especially since Nikki has to move onto feuding with Maryse I guess for the WrestleMania mixed tag. Apparently this feud is continuing.

Randy Orton vs. Luke Harper was a good match. Started pretty slow, but really built well.Thought there might be a sliver of hope for Harper to win just to put him in position for a possible triple threat at Mania, but I guess they want to keep Orton strong for the Mania title match.

Naomi wins the Women’s Title from Alexa Bliss in a good match. Again thought it was too soon to take the title from Bliss, not that Naomi doesn’t deserve her chance. Bliss makes a good heel champ and at this point overall it looks like most of the title holders going into Mania will be faces. What happen to the days of having the heel champs defend and the big blow off of feuds where the face wins the title at Mania?

Elimination Chamber was the best match on the show. Always helps to have AJ Styles make whatever match he is in that much better. Bray Wyatt wins as has been predicted and now we have our Wyatt Family showdown for WrestleMania. During the match I feel like Miz was beaten pretty easily and clean by Cena which doesn’t do anything for me wanting to see them against each at WrestleMania. That just feels like a basic TV match.

      Thumbs Up

      Hawkins vs. Rawley **1/2

As pre-show matches go I thought it was alright. Hawkins is a fairly steady hand, Rawley is green & raw, but he has presence, decent showmanship & some decent looking offense, I’m not as down on his gimmick as some are, & I thought he looked decent in places here. Think the timing could’ve been better on some of the kick-outs at the back-end & there were a few minor awkward moments, but again, I thought it was alright & they did more than you see in some pre-show matches.

      Becky vs. Mickie ***1/4

Thought it was a good, solid match. Liked the layout. Little different with Becky blowing the beginning of her comeback, then Mickie cutting her off to transition back into the heat, then Becky restarting her comeback. Rhythm could’ve been better & execution of certain spots could’ve been crisper, but I liked it. Thought Mickie looked good, her technique was good for the most part, liked the way she controlled the pace during the heat, liked some of her choices & thought she generally looked very savvy & solid.

You could argue both needed the win, although with Mickie only just coming in the door, I thought it was a little early to beat her, & they’ve only given her one victory in a physical angle & a few promos to help her over, as well as the initial angle to bring her in, of course. Having said that, at least it was only a flash finish.

Worst Match: Crews & Kalisto vs. Ziggler *3/4

The match was what the match was, but as far as the booking I don’t know where to start & could go on about this for an age.

Just such a bizarre situation with this two faces & one heel handicap match. There’s creativity, there’s variety, there’s innovation & then there’s stupidity. I’d class this entire situation as the latter. You can do it a certain way if it’s this dominant monster heel, or I suppose if it’s this guy who you’ve put a ton of heat on over an extended period of time — but it’s Dolph Ziggler.

And just these poor babyfaces. They’ve been battered at every turn & then are given a man advantage against Ziggler, it just kills them, it’s terrible. And this has done little for Ziggler either. I mean, you can do the “I go over, you get over” — but it’s gotta be the right situation & they’ve done it four times now, with it losing impact on each occasion. The guy clearly needs strong momentum right now & these half measures as well as heavily character based booking decisions aren’t helping.

On top of all of that, it’s pretty similar to the situation with Neville & the cruiserweights a while ago, that here’s this guy who is a bigger star & has done more of substance, being positioned against guys who done little to impress the audience, that they have some degree of apathy for, & are bordering on an annoyance to them — so they of course choose the bigger star.

Plus, with the chair, the audience likes weapon use, & as we’ve seen many times, nowadays don’t feel sympathy as much for the characters, & are happy to enjoy weapon shots with little regard for the victim, regardless of who it is. It can still get the person over, but there’s little chance of heat (to be fair to them it is very difficult to get heat on a heel nowadays, but you think they’d notice & change accordingly, but maybe they don’t care, who knows), but even the prior isn’t going happen with such excessiveness. Also I preferred Ziggler’s mannerisms during the Lawler angle where he was this cold, miserable heel.

Quite the rant, but the whole thing is a complete mess.

      Tag Team Turmoil ***1/4

Thought lack of pre-planning was definitely a problem here. They really needed to think ahead & build-up some of these teams prior to this, but of course that doesn’t happen with such short-term booking. I thought it was a decent match, thought Slater/Rhyno & American Alpha looked good, liked the layout with the first half focused on Slater & Rhyno, setting the table for an Usos-Alpha feud, & putting the babyface champions in a vulnerable position with them overcoming against the remaining heel team in big fashion.

Ascension would never be your first choice, but if you wanted do what they did with The Usos, Ascension was frankly the best option with the nature of their gimmick & stature, as opposed to the remaining heel teams.

      Natalya vs. Nikki ***1/2

Finish was a shame, but I thought it was a strong effort & good match. Was a little thrown by the beginning of the match as it was not you’d expect for such a heated feud, but it made sense with the heel trying to play to her strengths & exploit the face’s weakness, only for the face to match her. I enjoyed the uniqueness with some of the submission work, some interesting hope-spots & an interesting layout overall. Thought Natalya was great as she always is, good presence during the heat & solid as a rock. Nikki was decent, although there were a few awkward moments. Again, good effort & liked it.

      Orton vs. Harper ****

Thought it was a very good match. I did think there were some rhythm issues & was a little sluggish at times, but it built great, Orton made Harper look good — although you can see his heel style bumping is restricted as he’s clearly trying to protect his neck, thought the crowd didn’t really know what to make of it initially & perhaps didn’t believe in Harper, who also wasn’t very over & perhaps could’ve done with greater preparation for the occasion, but they got them in the end & I thought the sell for the RKO was superb. Also on the sluggishness, I think it’d be of Orton’s benefit to drop some weight.

      Alexa vs. Naomi **1/2

They were in a tough position, but I thought they did some nice & unique stuff, there was good effort, there was some feeble looking offense at times & things fell-apart a bit at the end, also intensity was an issue, but again, I thought it was ok.

Pretty surprised by the finish, but I don’t think Naomi is a bad choice. Her entrance is a big shine, she’s athletic & got lots of flashy offense, she looks good, is endearing & has personality, I’m not against it & think she could get fairly over. You aren’t gonna get a lot of rather good matches out of her, but I think she’s far from the worst option.

      Best Match: Elimination Chamber ****1/4

Wild match. Lots of crazy stuff & nice spots, & the crowd was lapping it up. Glad they finally got rid of that grating on the outside (or perhaps just padded it up) & increased the heights so guys weren’t as restricted with stuff from above the Chamber. Styles made everyone look great & the bump from the top of the chamber was nuts. Ambrose worked ever so hard & took a nasty landing off that double German.

In addition, Cena appeared to hurt his leg on that torture rack spinning powerbomb of Styles’. Thought it was laid-out well booking wise, with Corbin looking real good prior to his opening elimination, & frankly there was no real easy option for who should go out first. They set the table nicely for an Corbin-Ambrose feud (which looked likely after the last Miz-Ambrose match) & put Wyatt over pretty huge, who got quite the reaction for his victory. Real good stuff.

Thumbs up. Surprised how solid the show was.

      • Best Match: Harper vs Orton
      • Worst Match: Ziggler vs Kalisto & Crews

Missed the pre-show match. All of the women’s matches were good, which was important to holding this show together. Kept me engaged throughout. Thought everything worked well. The whole show made sense.

Not sure how Ziggler is a heel, losing a 2 on 1 where he did the smart thing to even the odds at the start. Doesn’t help Kalisto and Apollo for sure. One of the great things about SmackDown is everyone seems to have improved their place in the company pecking order. Except those two.

Harper looked great. Hard choice between the Chamber match and this, but I prefer a good 1 on 1 battle with a clean finish to the gimmick match any day.

Naomi vs. Alexa Bliss was in a tough spot, but they did a good job. Naomi came off very well in the post-match interview and again on Talking Smack.

Elimination Chamber was really well booked and worked. Again, everyone involved comes out looking good. Could easily see this as best match, too.

The crowd was great and really helped the show come across well.

Very good main event. I got legit bored watching earlier in the show, though. WWE over-saturation plus a B-show from the lesser-valued brand, along with three women’s matches.

It really annoyed me that the announcers clearly were not allowed to bring up the hypothetical of Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt until after the main event ended. Kind of like how they weren’t allowed to acknowledge Mickie James wrestling Asuka in NXT a few months back.

      • Best Match: Chamber
      • Worst Match: Mojo v Curt

Good but not amazing show. Was glad that having three women’s matches in the modern age wasn’t cringeworthy because there were some shows in that past at times that had to have two divas matches on one card and that was just death. The depth of the division still shows a little when you use all.

On the same note the tag division gets really exposed when you keep doing these scrambles and 10 and 12 men matches. I still strongly feel one women’s and one tag champs are the way to go and have them travel between shows. Again though the quality of the women’s matches all solid. May be in the minority but enjoyed the Bliss match the best. Naomi has revived her career starting with the new entrance idea and its a good story to have her defend in her hometown. The scramble had some cool moments but due to format it never gets going.

As has been pointed out; the handicap match concept had so many issues but parts of the actual match were good. Why wasn’t it just a three way where you could have the faces work together at times but still try to beat each other. They have no clue on Ziggler. He’s booked as a failure constantly and not in the “Daniel Bryan” way.

Harper-Orton was a standout performance by Harper back to his original breakout but could tell crowd is confused as it wants to love Orton and Harper has been a heel so long. Also the tough thing with a Harper solo push is he is ALWAYS going to be associated with the Wyatt Family gimmick it feels so will always be a feeling of reforming or inferiority. If they could get Orton over as a true heel I wouldn’t mind a Wyatt face turn as a modern day Undertaker considering how much the fans love the entrance etc.

Timing may not be right but I thought Chamber match was great. Not sure about this new Chamber, guessing due to safety and ease of fitting it around rings was the change. Even though everyone knew the finish I am glad they didn’t have a change of heart. The character needed a title win to advance. Hopefully this is not a case of four WrestleManias in a row where Wyatt loses or gets punked out (no match at 32).

hey have done a great job of making a group of legit title contenders of all the folks who were in the Chamber plus Orton. They could easily include Ziggler in there if they knew how to handle him. Fastlane has a bit more oomph behind it that could have made this a lame duck but the solid content put it in a good place.

      NXT TakeOver: San Antonio —

      Thumbs Up

      • Best Match: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Bobby Roode
      • Worst Match: Eric Young vs. Tye Dillinger

Not as good as some of the best previous NXT Takeover shows, but a solid event nonetheless. No nonsense as usual, which I liked. DIY carrying the Authors of Pain to a strong match speaks volumes about DIY’s ability.

I’m glad they didn’t do one of those stupid title changes in the women’s four-way where the champion isn’t involved in the fall. If/when Asuka loses the NXT Women’s Championship, it needs to mean something. Asuka losing should be a big deal.

Aside for the stuff from Japan, I haven’t watched much NXT weekly TV as of late. With the wrestlers being capped at doing WWE TV-style matches and forced to do those terrible scripted promos, it’s just not of interest.

But they deliver the goods on these Takeover shows, and they did so again tonight despite a lineup that looked rather underwhelming on paper.

Hey Dave, watched the show up to the women’s match last night, got up this morning and rewatched the tag and the remainder of the show. Thought that through the women’s match, this was a down ballot show of the year. Main event was a match that did not hold my attention. The injury angle at the end completely jumped the shark. I want Shinsuke on the main roster so 1) he can have a carrot dangled in front of him and 2) he can face new, better competition.

Shinsuke’s situation reminds me of former top Yankees prospect Jesus Montero’s plight in 2011. Jesus had destroyed AAA in 2010, was kept down for the entirety of the minor league season in 2011 because he was blocked by Yankee staple Jorge Posada. Jesus had a good season, but did not improve upon his 2010. Scouts at the time theorized that he was bored with the level and not being challenged, which is common with prospects who have clearly surpassed the level of competition in the minors.

Other notes: I’ve only heard people talk about Roddy Strong before and I was very impressed. I’m very excited for his title program. Dillinger vs. Young was as good an opening match as you can put on. Told a story, highlighted both wrestler’s strength, but didn’t steal anyone’s thunder.

That tag match had no business being that good. AOP could be something with time if they expand upon their characters and style, as their big man style won’t carry them on the main roster in the land of the giants. The Seth/HHH segment was awesome. I was caught by tremendous surprise and thought it got Seth over huge. Perfect angle.

EY/Dillinger was a pretty solid opener, some good back & forth action between the two (**1/2), Almas/Roddy was really good, just as expected (***1/2), DIY vs. AOP was GREAT & my pick for the best match of the night (****), Asuka/Billie/Cross/Peyton was messy at parts, but Asuka & Cross were really great in it (**1/2), I didn’t have high expectations for Roode/Nakamura, so I can’t say that I was disappointed, Roode was a total bore in it (*1/2).

Overall a pretty solid show, the main event being bad dragged it down a bit, but the tag title match was great & Roddy/Almas was very good.

Nakamura v. Roode review: The entrances were awesome, Roode going all ’89 Flair was glorious. The actual match though…not so glorious. The first 10 minutes or so were meh, and once it transitioned into Roode working on top, it became straight up boring.

Nakamura’s comeback w/ his usual signature moves wasn’t interesting, but I did like the moment where he was signaling for Kinshasa & Roode wouldn’t get up. That was good. Then some more Roode work on top. Ughhh. And once again, Nakamura’s hope spots & comeback weren’t any interesting.

I did like Shinsuke not being able to pin Roode after he had delivered Kinshasa, that was real good. The finish was pretty damn good with Nakamura trying everything he can to survive — that Triangle before getting destroyed was good. Overall though? Easily the worst match of the night & the worst of Nakamura’s major matches in NXT so far, in my eyes. *1/2

      **********

From my point of view the show started off well with Tye Dillinger vs Eric Young, the crowd was really amped up yet they kind of fell off a little towards the end of the match. Since I feel like this may be the perfect 10’s last match at NXT I feel like he came off looking a little weak. An entrance at the Royal Rumble at number 10 could be the best boost for his career at this point.

The second match between Roderick Strong and Andrade “Cien” Almas was to me an underrated match, the crowd was really dead at that moment and both talent did really well to get the crowd fired up but it just wasn’t there.

The tag team match was my least favorite, I feel like The Authors of Pain have a ways to go before they can carry the tag division on their shoulders. A better match would’ve been between DYI and TM-61 but injuries and booking say otherwise.

The continuation of Asuka being put over strongly is starting to die off a little. The lack of talent on both ends is really affecting NXT right now, the women division needs more improved talents to take on Asuka or seem more challenging to her.

That brings me to the main event, the entrances were GLORIOUS!! The match was great, the selling between both superstars were great, I like the way they are booking Bobby Roode and putting him over and still make Shinsuke look strong. I can’t wait to see what’s next between those two.

      • Best match: main event
      • Worst match: the tag team

While many people might not have liked the segment with Seth Rollins calling out Triple H, I thought it was brilliant. Looking at the big picture it was only right to have Seth come back to the brand he helped started off yet having him call out Hunter was even greater, we all know what is coming next at Mania so why not make the buildup as fiery and realistic as possible. The whole shaking while holding the microphone was just great selling done by Seth.

Overall, the show was good not great the lack of fire power talent is hurting NXT at the moment but Triple H has obviously noticed it so I wouldn’t be surprised with a few more signings here and there.

Thumbs Up. Show with so little buzz going in really delivered. Was a fun and meaningful two plus hours. Did a tremendous job again with the main event, making it feel special and big time.

I told my friends before the show that Seth should show up as it is only logical and they came through on that. Nice to see them using Triple H and storylines in a linear fashion. When done in right spots it could be a tremendous avenue for them.

      • Worst Match: Nothing bad on the show at all but I would say Dillinger/Young.
      • Best Match: Nakamura/Roode. Really good wrestling match and the knee-angle took it to another level for me.

DIY may very well be one of the best tag teams in the world. They got a really good match out of Authors of Pain(Who are improved)

Almas/Strong was a great showcase for both. Almas seems to be finding himself as a heel. Strong is really good but something is missing there. I think he is still best suited as the Dean Malenko of the cruiserweight division.

Hopefully the Rumble delivers as well.

      **********

This was one of my favorite NXT TakeOver shows in the past 2 years. Every match felt important, every segment felt needed, and almost every win felt natural. Starting off with the show opener of “The Perfect Ten” Tye Dillinger versus Leader of Sanity Eric Young. This match was very thought out by both men. Watching this match you could really see Tye trying his hardest to overcome the numbers advantage of Sanity.

I predicted Eric Young to win this because I felt he needed the win to further solidify Sanity as a force to be reckoned with while Tye Dillinger seems to moving his way to the main roster on possibly SmackDown.

The next match of Andrade Almas versus Roderick Strong felt very fluid and deliberate. Both men put on a classic match, one of if not the best match from tonight. Almas working on Strong’s arm really brought true heel heat to Almas while making Strong seem dominant in being able to come back and win the match. These two men seemed to know each other very well, and I hope we can see another classic like this in the future.

Next we got the Tag Team title match between #DIY vs Authors of Pain. Both teams played very strongly to their gimmicks and their abilities and showcase a great tag team match. I figured that Authors of Pain would stand tall at the end, but by DQ or countout because I didn’t think #DIY would lose the belts so quickly. Overall both teams wrestled very well, and built up a great story between them.

The Women’s Title match was next and it was pretty decent. For me, I’m not a fan of Peyton Royce or Billie Kay but they played their role very well in this match. They tried to dominate the match using the number’s advantage. Taking out Nikki Cross on that table was a very good spot. Then allowing Asuka to battle back and take both women out continued to build up Asuka’s reign, which will make whomever takes it off of her seem very strong.

The main event was an amazing match. Bobby Roode and Shinsuke Nakamura went out there and performed like true wrestlers and superstars. Playing to the crowd, using mind games, and then just giving each other every move they could brought out one of the best matches we are gonna see all weekend.

My only concern was the ending. I’m not sure if WWE has come out with any statement on Nakamura’s knee, but I do hope he is going to be okay. It was a very interesting way to cause the title change hands. It brought out a lot of heel heat when Roode attacked Nakamura’s knee at the end. I’m truly excited to see where this story goes next. The best match for me was Strong vs Almas just because of the chemistry those two men showed. I think both are gonna become big stars in WWE.

The worst match was the Fatal-Four Way Women’s Title match. I’m not saying it was bad, it was a good match. Just with all the other matches on the card, it got a bit out shined. Overall an amazing start to Royal Rumble Weekend. I can not wait to see how the rest of the weekend holds up. Hope you enjoyed it to!

      • Best: Strong vs. Cien
      • Worst: NXT Women’s Title Fatal Four-way

Going into this show I had already realized that the NXT bubble had burst and that I needed to lower the usual expectations I would have for a NXT special. That being said, by the time the horribly overbooked Nakamura injury angle was happening I realized I should have put those expectations even lower. This was the most minor league feeling NXT show since the Bo Dallas/Neville era.

I thought the show got off to a solid start with the opener. The fact that Tye Dillinger is so over even though he has a Barry Horowitz-level win/loss record is either a testament to Dillinger’s charisma and likability or just a reflection that wrestling fans really, really like chanting “10” (or perhaps a little of both.) I’ve been a fan of Eric Young since 2004 and this is by far the best work he’s ever done both in terms of ring work and putting over his gimmick.

The way they next showed Samoa Joe at ringside sure made it seem like he was a former NXT star and I’d be surprised if he didn’t debut on the main roster ASAP.

I thought Strong vs. Cien was the match of the night and the best match Cien has had since coming to NXT. I can only imagine how over Roderick Strong would be if he had ever had any gimmick at all. Just walking out in a jacket that boringly and basically says “Hi, I’m Roderick Strong, I’m going to wrestle now” just doesn’t match his ridiculous in-ring ability.

The tag title match was where the show started to go downhill. The Authors of Pain is a limited gimmick and much like 3 Minute Warning or Headhunters A & B I don’t imagine them making a big impact in WWE. Team DIY was good but they can’t work miracles. At some point in wrestling lexicon “playing Ricky Morton” has got to be replaced by “playing Johnny Gargano.”

The women’s title match was really unprofessional feeling and the worst woman’s TakeOver match that I can ever remember. Even though they don’t really look alike I have a Dash and Dawson style problem with Peyton and Billie as I’m constantly forgetting which is which.

The main even was also the weakest main event the WWE has put on in sometime with anyone who isn’t named Kevin Owens. Nakamura and Roode just didn’t click and the finish left a horrible taste in my mouth. I get that they were trying to protect Nakamura in loosing but it was so overdone that I was glad when the crowd crapped all over it. I really think Nakamura would have been less hurt losing cleanly than putting on that horrible injury performance.

      • Best Match: Nakamura vs. Roode
      • Worst Match: Women’s 4-Way

This edition of Takeover from San Antonio came as a bit of a surprise. This ended being much stronger of show than most anticipated. Good to great matches from top to bottom and a surprising angle involving Seth Rollins and Triple H.

Eric Young vs. Tye Dillinger — Very hot opener. Great Face/Heel Dynamic. The wild and frenetic feel of this match reminded of a Memphis-influence. Dillinger gets better and better each time he is out there as well. I see an NXT Title build in his future. 3 1/2 stars

Strong vs. Almas — This one was hard-hitting from bell-to-bell. Both men definitely had something to prove here. This match actually wasn’t that long, but they made up for it in intensity. Strong performance from both guys. 4 stars

The Seth Rollins segment was something different in that it was WWE Raw storyline that bleed over onto NXT. Something tells me this will continue tomorrow night.

DIY vs. AOP — Another great tag match from DIY. This was them carrying the young AOP to their best match to date. DIY sold and struck on a world class-level. 4 stars

Interested to see what they do with this division going forward with AOP as the champions. Sanity seems to be the only other team that might be able to give AOP a run for their money physically.

Asuka vs. N.Cross vs. B. Kay vs. P Royce — Not a bad match by any stretch. Had some good spots and told a decent story. It was the weak link on the show by default. 3 1/2 stars

Nakamura vs. Roode — The two greatest entrances in all of NXT (and possibly pro wrestling). They didn’t disappoint either. Roode doing the Nature Boy-esque entrance and Nakamura riding a contraption all the way to the ring under a shower of strobe light.

The match itself was excellent as these actually have quite a bit of chemistry. Nakamura sold like a madman in this match. He portrayed a leg injury that was self-inflicted by trying to kick Roode’s head off. Roode took advantage of the injury to win the NXT Title. Perfect way to keep Shinsuke strong and branch out into a new direction with a Glorious Roode Reign. 4 1/4 stars

      • Best Match: Roode v Nakamura
      • Worst Match: Women’s 4 way

Not on the same level as many of the other Takeovers but very good. The 10 stuff is fun during Tye matches but needs to be put back in the box outside of that. At same time WWE should embrace it for him. Two separate folks I know, who do not no each other, were in attendance tonight and talked about how their neighbors were buzzing about the ten spot tomorrow.

Though NXT is a hardcore crowd be ready to see some chants picking up even in the dome after 9 comes in. As you’ve mentioned hopefully they have sense to at least put a heel in at 10 if not Dillinger.

Asuka v Cross 1:1 may have been a better choice but though the worst match did have its moments   The Rollins stuff was certainly different for an NXT event especially considering multiple times where main roster status of Hunter is ignored or contradicted. Hell of a job in the main event to make people go with the injury. Roode’s best match easily in NXT. Awesome tag match. Guess with the push they had to go Authors just think DIY had more juice to squeeze.

Just left the Freeman Coliseum and I have to say….thumbs way up. I feel like this was uncharted territory as for the first time a Takeover card seemed underwhelming and absolutely delivered.

Match of the night really to me had to be the Tag Team Championship match. What an insane surprise this was for me. The crowd was into it so much more than I assumed they would be and DIY made it seem like they had it in their grasps numerous times. Then AoP had some stupid strong spots. Seeing it in person was surreal.

Surprise match of the night had to be Strong v Cien. Stiff match, hard hitting. They worked very well together and for lack of story I felt they worked with what they had better than most of the guys in the back could do.

There really wasn’t a match that didn’t hit on the levels it was meant to. I don’t really need to say much on Roode/Nakamura match as it was a magnificent display of in ring psychology.

For my first time at an NXT event I went in not knowing what to expect and was not let down at all.

Thought it was a really good show. Decent opener & hoping Dillinger’s is heading for an upper-midcard babyface spot on SmackDown — as they could certainly could do with another to add the ranks. Thought Almas-Strong was a good solid match, while nothing overly ambitious. Thought it flowed well & both guys looked good.

Tag title match exceeded expectations — thought the layout was very good, match was aided by the crowd, Gargano & Ciampa deserve great credit — but to be fair to A.O.P they were fairly competent. Again, thought very good layout for the women’s match — smartly structured, good story & was a good match.

Thought the main event was very, very good. Probably my favorite Nakamura performance in NXT, given the change he’s undergone. Thought he looked very comfortable & his double-whammy of selling was great. Speaking of his selling, I feel he sells like an American, better than any of the Americans — if that makes any sense to you.

Still think he’s got to change-up that comeback, as it’s a key part of WWE matches, & it’s not the most explosive or spectacular, & is a little untidy looking. Plus his offense post-comeback could do with greater variety, as when bunched together — as frequently happens within the structure, it comes-off a little repetitive, I feel, which can be detrimental. Also I’m concerned his athleticism, from a movement standpoint, could be problematic on the main roster — but hopefully it’s not.

Anyway, enjoyed the pace, didn’t mind the slow start, really good rhythm, thought they had good chemistry, built well – really liked it. Surprised by the finish. Didn’t see him losing the title again until he was close to being called-up, & didn’t figure that would happen soon, given options to replace him in his spot in NXT. Interested to see what happens.

Dominant Wrestling on Spike TV in the UK —

The tournament set-up worked really well as a one-off show and the big names got the reaction you would expect. The last two matches were the best on the show although not particularly special. Mysterio got attacked after both his matches with Magnus and Carlito working over his knee in the quarter and semi-final eventually losing to current 5 Star champ Morrison.

The commentary team of Greg Lambert and Joe Hendry were excellent and added a lot to the show. They spoke about where each wrestler had been and built up signature moves etc and felt like they were doing a great job for casual fans checking out the show.

It was very much a small family crowd and typical of a WWE house show in the U.K. With some ICW fans chanting their promotions name during Galloway’s match.

The production was quite good overall. Nice camera work and lighting but lots of empty spaces around the entrance area which looked very poor on TV.

Morrison won the tournament (when Galloway and Rey were the most over) and he closed the show with a promo announcing a 128 man competition across the UK with a grand final at the Manchester arena being shown on Spike UK this summer.

      Thumbs Down

      • Best Match: Drew Galloway vs. Chris Masters
      • Worst Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Carlito

Quite a poor show in all honesty. The arena was poorly set up with a massive gap between the stage and the ring with no fans so all you could see was the wood that had been placed down to cover the ice. There was only about 10 rows at ringside which made it look empty as the stands were full behind but weren’t lit at all. The camera work was not good enough for this type of event with it mostly being handheld shot from below the ring.

Moves were constantly missed and the director didn’t change to better angles when needed. The wrestlers themselves put on very toned down matches compared to the level of talent they have.

World of Sport was by far the better show even though this show had much better talent. It felt like a Saturday matinee at a holiday camp with very simple face/heel dynamics. We are talking about this golden age of UK indie wrestling and so far both British TV companies have tried and missed the point. World of Sport can do Saturday light entertainment as they did previously and that could be successful. However I feel tonight was a missed opportunity for sure.

The lineup and a two-hour live prime time TV slot gave these guys a lot of room to do something very good but it just didn’t click. To top it all off they ran long and were taken off air during the announcement of a tournament this summer in Manchester. Hopefully with the announcement that there will be more shows then this will be used as a learning experience and the product will be much better come the summer.

      **********

A thumbs up overall but I thought it was a bit of a missed opportunity for promoting British wrestling.  I thought there were too many already established guys there when maybe 2 or 3 of them could have been better.  For whatever they paid Moose, Masters and PJ Black surely they could have gotten some local talent in?  I’m not expecting UK Tournament guys or ZSJ, Ospreay or Scurll but it’s a large talent pool with a lot to showcase.

Those guys weren’t particularly impressive either so taking a punt on a young guy would have been worth a shot.

Overall it was decent Saturday night viewing. The quality left a lot to be desired but to your average casual viewer it did it’s job.  I think there’s a market here in the UK for a once monthly TV show for the Saturday 8 p.m. slot. Sports-wise they aren’t competing with anything so it’s there for the taking.  Maybe WWE can take it broadcasting on Sky 1 which is a free channel?

I felt like although they had a lot of star power the event felt sub par. There was no above average matches and the end result was disappointing. Other than in the final match when John Morrison’s music hit early everything went smooth considering it was live, the crowd was also mainly family and children which although a good market really had a negative impact on the show in my opinion.

WWE UK tournament night one fan feedback

      Thumbs In The Middle

Thought the show was okay. Found it rather underwhelming, but didn’t think it was bad. Seen over half the participants wrestle before, four of them are based and wrestle local to me (Seven, Bate, Dunne, and Moloney), and no one showed their full capabilities.

Everyone looked severely handcuffed. They were clearly instructed/under the impression they were to wrestle WWE style matches, which of course meant certain moves and sequences were banned, and a particular structure was adhered to, which in the case of the style, to a degree I expected and is fine, and I understand the thinking, with the thought that theirs is “a style for the masses” and they want you to wrestle in a manner that is fairly simple, understandable, and easily digestible, and not overwhelm or ostracize any of the potential audience, and make it accessible. Plus, of course, they feel some of what they ask is simply the right way to do things, as well they’re other aspects to it, but I digress.

However, what we saw for the most part was a greater degree of simplicity, slower (which isn’t necessarily bad), less spotty, and more low-impact with a steep curve than you’re accustomed to on WWE TV, when they were capable of far more. Excluding a few matches, they seemed to just want guys to try and have what they saw as good solid matches, and leave plenty in the tank for tomorrow, and to be fair — perhaps some adhered to instructions a little too much and/or were afraid of getting in trouble, either way the action was disappointing.

Also in the case Tyler and Trent (Seven), their full level of showmanship/charisma didn’t come across, I feel. In the case of Trent, I’m suspicious this was down to what they like, in the sense of they like you to keep the action moving, and they also don’t like too much playing to the crowd.

In the case of Tyler, as well as the playing to the crowd aspect, some of his showmanship spots they might see as hokey, and some are comedy driven, neither of which they really like, and also some are implemented during his scientific/technical work, which they don’t like a lot of with their guidelines of keeping the action moving — excluding the obvious exceptions, and some of it may’ve been a personal choice, to not invite further comparisons to Jack Gallagher, as they’re similar in that regard.

With all that said, I’m delighted they clearly like him (Tyler), wanted to showcase him and have the best match. In addition, I was surprised how much Pete Dunne got out of Roy Johnson. That may not be fair because I don’t see a lot of Johnson’s work, but he’s pretty green and limited, and that match exceeded my expectations. On other matters, I thought the presentation was good & Cole and McGuinness did well.

      • Best: Tyler Bate vs. Tucker
      • Worst: Trent Seven vs. HC Dyer

If the cruiserweight title tournament was 31 flavors then this show was one big ol’ scoop of vanilla. The action was fine but completely forgettable in every way. No one stood out as ready for a big stage, although I could see Sam Gradwell being a star if he improves his in ring skills. Tomorrow’s show should be better as much of the fat has been trimmed, but these local tournaments aren’t going to work if they don’t have the talent to back it up. Revolution Pro Wrestling has never seemed so professional.

Side note: Michael Cole was the best on commentary he’s been in ages. I don’t know if it was being paired with Nigel or being away from Vince producing him but it reminded me of how much promise he had back during his first big run on SmackDown with Tazz.

      Thumbs down.

Nothing stood out. Felt like watching SmackDown midcard matches.

Can’t spend another show listening to Michael Cole. The guy just has zero instinct for this. Since he’s been lead Raw announcer how far have the ratings gone down? Who wants to spend three hours listening to Michael Cole? Does Vince listen back to the show? It defies all logic he’s lead announcer.

      – Yale Hannon

      **********

I’ve just finished watching the first night of the UK tournament show. I thought on the whole it was pretty good, but not a great show. There was no one on the show who blew me away in their matches or who I thought could be a major superstar in WWE. I liked Michael Cole a lot more on tonight’s show than usual and he gelled fairly well with Nigel McGuinness on commentary.

Of the matches, I liked Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, and Mark Andrews on the show. I’m hoping for Tyler Bate vs. Trent Seven and Mark Andrews vs. Pete Dunne in the semifinals culminating with Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne in the final match.

I have to say that I was not all that impressed by Jordan Devlin and Joseph Conners. Michael Cole described Conners as a “legit main eventer.” I really didn’t think there was much to him or his performance, but maybe he’ll be better tomorrow. During Jordan Devlin’s match, the crowd sang “you’re just a sh*t Finn Balor.” That pretty much tells you about everything about him and his performance. I don’t think either guy should get anywhere near the final tomorrow. It should be Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne.

      Overall, I’d give the show a 6/10, maybe a 7/10

Just thought I’d pass along some thoughts on last night’s WWE UK Title tournament night one show. I was there live and have also since seen the whole thing again on the Network, and I also have a ticket for tonight’s show too. I heard your analysis of night one on Observer Radio and I think you were very fair. I agreed with pretty much everything you said about the show.

I enjoyed it, probably more being there live than watching it back, although I also thought it was good watching it back. It was an easy thumbs up for me. Match of the night was definitely Tyler Bate vs. Tucker. Worst match was Saxon Huxley vs. Sam Gradwell. I think Saxon got the Jesus chants not only because of the way he looked, but because very few knew in attendance knew him, and this was clearly a very smart UK crowd with many attending UK shows all the time.

There were virtually no children there at all. It was really astonishing how few there were, even compared to NXT shows I’ve been to in the past. The atmosphere was fantastic, up there with the very best shows in a small venue that I’ve ever attended. The setting and the building was great, probably the best small building I’ve ever watched wrestling in, and I’ve been to quite a few in the US such as the Manhattan Center, Hammerstein Ballroom, and Center Stage.

One weird thing was when I got to the building, I had East Balcony seats right in the centre, and there were no seats there, with a hard camera situated there instead. The building manager profusely apologised, said it had been a late decision by WWE to situate the camera there, and upgraded us (I was with seven others) to fifth row ringside, in the centre directly opposite the ring and big screen entrance. So none of us were disappointed.

As mentioned, the atmosphere was great. People leaving the building afterwards all seemed very pleased with the show and there didn’t seem to be any complaints. You were correct in saying that certain guys perhaps were being held back, but then again it was night one and in WWE’s eyes maybe they want to build to night two and save all the good stuff for tonight.

I don’t know if you saw the post show angle with Pete Dunne but it was terrific. He continued to attack Gradwell and threw him off the stage. Then WWE released a backstage video on YouTube with everyone disgusted with Dunne’s actions including Nigel McGuinness. Triple H sort of shrugged and said “Make a name for yourself kid.” Regal was absolutely furious, after helping Gradwell backstage he launched into a tirade at Dunne warning him not to mess this up (shades of Vince with Steve Austin immediately after the Tyson angle in 1998, trying to play it off as a bit of shoot that Dunne went too far).

They then showed Regal and HHH going into HHH’s office, with Regal demanding that Dunne be disqualified from the tournament and Triple H calming him down. I thought it was really effective.

There was a dark match before last night’s show, with Chris Tyler & Jack Starz beating Ringo Ryan & Prince Ali. Standard opener, babyfaces going over. At the same level of the most of the other matches on the card.

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11 fan feedback: The best match ever?

      Thumbs Up

      • Best match: Omega vs. Okada in a walk, but Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA and Tanahashi vs. Naito were both amazing, and any other night would be there.
      • Worst match: there wasn’t one, really.

Everything about the show was GREAT in my opinion, except who won the last two matches. I have no complaints otherwise, than to say they made some bad angle choices all over the place. Cody was fine over there, so that’s a good thing in his first night. I was absolutely blown away by Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA, and I already expected big things.Takahashi came across like a big, important star to me in this match. It was so so great, and honestly, I wanted to watch it again immediately after it was over.

The tag matches are what you expect from NJPW in that regard, and I didn’t think they put enough emphasis on Ospreay but honestly, every other choice (until the last two matches) were either exactly what I wanted or what I thought should happen. I was very glad Goto got the win after the year he’d had, LIJ had a banner year, and them with the NEVER belts could be really interesting, I’m always in favor of Ishii getting anything, and like I said Takahashi felt like a real star here to me.

The last two matches were off the charts incredible, to the point that I’ll be stopping people for like a year to ask them if they’ve seen them yet. Tanahashi vs. Naito was so smart and perfect in the way they built off everything and used everything so well. I thought it was incredible. Omega vs. Okada more than lived up to the hype we all had for it, in my view. They probably had the match of the year already, honestly, and for a lot of people it might be more than that. It’s a match I think I’ll wind up rewatching over and over and over again. I’ll probably see it at least 20 times before the year is over.

I hated that Tanahashi and Omega lost, though. Those are the only complaints I can muster about this show, but they are complaints. I feel like NJPW spent a lot of energy and effort telling us this was Tanahashi’s restart, his time to come back and be the ace he’d fallen away from, and instead he loses immediately. It kind of feels like the Cena credibility problem in the fact that it used to be a big thing to beat Tanahashi, but now so many have done it, I don’t know what it really does for someone. Maybe he needs time to recover or rest or whatever, and I guess they wanted LIJ to all have belts, but it just felt like a mistake to take the guy who’s been the cornerstone, and should still be a big deal, and have him lose on that stage.

Omega, I’m sure, will get a win fairly soon, and probably the belt, based of this show. But man, this is the first time I’ve really thought Gedo made a large mistake in his booking. This show, especially, was one that a lot of people outside the typical NJPW sphere paid attention to, and while I’m sure Kenny will probably win the belt fairly soon (good Lord willing), it comes across as not being as important because it wasn’t at a major show.

On top of that, the Bullet Club lost every match, except Cody’s debut, so it makes them seem weak. They made sure there was basically no interference in the Omega match, too. Had Omega won, I would have understood that. But, obviously, he didn’t. Now, New Year’s Dash may completely change things, but this is one of those moments where NJPW feels like WWE in the sense that the guy who needs the win will get it on the show after the biggest one of the year so everyone doesn’t see him win it.

Omega is obviously a star at this point, and there’s no disputing that, or how they’ve built him this past year, but it just seems like a poor choice to keep the belt on Okada, who doesn’t seem like he gains anything from it instead of solidifying someone who we all know could have excellent, fresh main event match ups with anyone on the roster (Ishii, Elgin, Tanahashi, Shibata, and so on.) Maybe I’ve got too much of a Western understanding of the idea here, or maybe I’m too lost in the WWE woods to understand the idea, but for a show that’s last half was spectacular and almost perfect, I can’t help but feeling those last two decisions were mistakes.

I guess it doesn’t change too much, though, because I’m going to wind up watching regardless. And I’m probably going to wind up watching that Okada vs. Omega match again before the day is over.

Less than halfway into the main event, I found myself thinking “this is the most complete match I’ve ever seen.” I’ve seen plenty of longer matches that felt like they told such a less compelling story, and thousands of shorter matches that had so much less energy. It has to be the best match I’ve ever seen, but I don’t know if I’ll ever feel like watching it again. Not because I’m a diehard Omega fan, though I am, but because this result made a dream that I’ve had running through my head for a while now seem essentially impossible.

For the last few months, I’ve had the urge to pursue a career in wrestling. I’ve spent the better part of the last decade writing and playing music (since I was 14, I’ll be 23 in a few weeks), and I was sure that I would dedicate my life to that pursuit, but wrestling just hit me. The idea of putting something I’m really good at on the back burner and trying something I might never be able to succeed in was, and is, scary, but that urge just won’t go away. I’ve been getting in better shape, working on promos, and trying to learn Japanese. My mind’s entirely wrapped up in this world.

I know the point of working in the wrestling business — and any business, for that matter — is supposed to be making money, but that just doesn’t drive me at all. Legacy and self-expression are the only things I really care about, and particularly building a legacy with what I see as the premier wrestling company in the world, New Japan Pro Wrestling. The ultimate end goal for me would be main eventing the 1/4 show, and winning the IWGP title. And not just because of the historical significance of both the show and the belt, but because of the implications of a westerner being given that validation.

I, like Omega, have had an affinity for Japanese culture since I was a kid, and to be embraced by that culture would mean a great deal to me. Now, I’ve known for a while that it’s more insular and nationalistic than would be ideal, but I’ve never really felt like an outsider couldn’t reach the top of the mountain, if the circumstances were right.

And I’m getting the feeling that that was false hope. Omega’s fluent in Japanese, he’s engrossed himself in the culture, he has the most global appeal of anyone in the company, and there’s no one in the world who can outwork him. And I’m sure he’ll win the title at some point, and main event a few smaller shows, but I don’t get the feeling they’ll ever really give him that crowning moment. I get the sense there’s a ceiling, and if you’re not Japanese (or perhaps Brock Lesnar, which I’m certainly not), you can never be the guy. A guy, but even if you’re the most compelling talent in the business, there’s a ceiling. And I just don’t know if I could handle spending years working towards a goal that I could never achieve.

This show was great. Shibata/Goto and Tanahashi/Naito were excellent, and the main event was profoundly incredible. But I had a lot less hope when it was over than I did when it began, and I’m not really sure what to think at this point. I’ll be watching New Year’s Dash when it comes on in a few hours, but NJPW has lost some of the luster to me. I know all of this might sound naive, because I’m looking at things through very idealistic eyes, but this is just what I took away from WK11.

      Gigantic Thumbs Up

Worst Match: New Japan Rumble *1/4

An almighty cluster of a match with a lot of awkward moments, some of the old fellas looked terrible, but had some decent moments and the closing stretch between Cheeseburger and Elgin was good.

Tiger Mask W vs. Tiger The Dark ***1/4

Did some nice stuff, but didn’t get a great deal of time, seemingly, and didn’t reach the heights it could’ve. Nice gentle main card opener, relatively speaking, which is what it was supposed to be.

Barretta & Romero vs. Young Bucks ***3/4

Really good match. Worked with the big building in mind, built well, loved the spot where Romero missed his trademark clothesline numerous times then hit it, Barretta somersault bump to the outside was nuts, lots of nice stuff towards the end, really liked it.

      Trios Title Gauntlet Match ***1/4

Disappointed Ospreay’s time was limited, match was rushed and a bit of a cluster, but was decent. Hot Potato Tag Titles continue to change hands.

      Robinson vs. Cody ***1/2

Really liked it. Nice solid match while nothing overly adventurous. Loved Cody’s heel mannerisms and Robinson’s fire and selling.

      Cole vs. O’ Reilly ***1/2

Thought there was some good action, but place was as dead as a door-nail and that really hurt it.

      Tag Title Three Way ***1/2

Good match, really picked-up towards the end, Ishii & Yano are quite the odd pairing.

      Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA ****1/4

Great match. First time watching Takahashi wrestle — very impressed. KUSHIDA’s always great. Well-paced despite being fast or hurried at times, let it breathe, good emphasis, lots of spectacular back-and-forth action. Sunset flip powerbomb to the outside is as nutty a transition move into the heat as you’ll see, senton splash dive was equally as nuts, KUSHIDA’s relentless pursuit of the Kimura was great. Super stuff.

      Goto vs. Shibata ****1/4

Their matches aren’t always entirely my cup of tea – as lots of striking sequences and displays of the Japanese fighting spirit aren’t really my thing, but I loved this one. Plenty of heavy selling, lots of double-downs, superb emphasis, lots of drama, spot where Goto lit him up with kicks then Shibata dropped him with a single forearm was great, as was the sleeper spot where Goto reached for the rope then Shibata trapped the arm — great match. Little disappointed and surprised Shibata lost the title so soon after regaining it.

      Tanahashi vs. Naito ****1/2

Adored this match. Didn’t do as much as you see in a lot of New Japan main event level matches, but the pacing and rhythm was fantastic, emphasis applied was great, dragged considerable drama out of what they did, loved the two submission false finishes, loved the stand-&-trade kicks to the knees spot. Wonderful match. Despite not physically being what he was, mentally Tanahashi is amazing.

Best Match: Omega vs. Okada *****

For a long time I didn’t think it was going to match Tanahashi-Naito — at least in my mind. I thought the layout was really good, but even after the moonsault over the barricade and double stomp on the table, it didn’t seem to be flowing quite as well as it could, and was just lacking that spark to take it to the next level. After the back drop through the table I thought it was there, although it quickly faded. But once Okada hit the dropkick they just took it to a crazy level.

Final stretch was incredible, a few minutes after the first Rainmaker I thought they’d gone too long and the match was past its peak, then after the second they took it even higher. Just insane match. Favourite spot had to be Omega kicking to try and free himself from the attempt Rainmaker to no avail. Was horrified by the top rope dragon suplex, though. Don’t ever want to see that again. Plus missile dropkick to the back of the head was nasty. Incredible action, great drama, great emphasis — one of the best matches I’ve seen.

I was lucky enough to be at the Dome tonight. People were swearing it was the greatest thing they had ever seen. I was in a curry house afterwards and people were shaking their heads as if to say to themselves “wow.”

I don’t want to take anything away from Okada as his athleticism and timing remain unmatched, but that was an astonishing one man show from Kenny Omega. Having just watched the match back on Asahi, I’m even more convinced. I’m talking an all time great performance.

Common sense told me being WK it wasn’t Kenny’s time yet but he came out a bigger star than he went in and they protected his finish. Absolutely a 5* match, live and even more so watching back on TV. You could spend all day listing the spots, callbacks, teases and general brilliance. I’d say there’s not been a match like that since Punk v Cena at MITB.

Although the atmosphere in the dome was actually pretty damned good, even in the nose bleeds, it undoubtedly detracts regardless of how good the matches are. That said, it was a terrific show, solid to the top half and taking off from there, WK style. Both semi-mains were at least 4 1/2*, maybe higher, Tanahashi v Naito being another masterpiece from two true story tellers.

I enjoyed the PPV very much, though the middle part of it sucked my energy.

I love 4/6 of the guys in the heavyweight tag match but that match wasn’t necessary. Cody vs Juice wasn’t bad but it shouldn’t have been on the show but it was a good bathroom break match. I want more for Kota Ibushi but he has to choose to get that.

I really don’t know how many more years in a row NJPW can keep up the insane high quality in the final matches of Wrestle Kingdom. But I’m gonna enjoy the run.

      • Best match: Kenny Omega vs. Kazuchika Okada

      **********

Wow what a show, those last four matches were all main event caliber all over the world and it just got better and better after each one. Three arguable five star matches topped off by maybe the best match I’ve ever seen. I give it about 20 thumbs up.

      • Best Bout: Okada/Omega
      • Worst Bout: Cody/Juice

      – Todd Parker

      **********

Newer NJPW fan, first live WK show, watched via NJPW World.

I’d like to start by raving about the guys that I hadn’t watched much, if anything, of before last night.  Hiromu Takahashi impressed the hell out of me, and part of that was that he looked like he belonged in that big fight atmosphere.  Rocky Romero looked like a million dollars and managed to get me invested in a running angle with Beretta that I knew literally nothing about based one this one match.  The Guerrillas of Destiny and Shibata looked like beasts.

Match of the night was Okada/Omega. Omega’s transformation to a top guy is complete. Hard hitting spots, moments of pure tension, and a crowd that was masterfully worked into a frenzy. A great story was started here, and I can not wait to see these two men have another war down the line.

The difference in my opinion between this and the previous match was that I felt that the conclusion of the Naito/Tanahashi match was never really in doubt.  Theirs was a story reaching the conclusion. The latter match felt it could go either way until the very end, and was able to hook me in emotionally such that by the end, I was almost ready to weep.

That being said, Naito was the MVP last night.  It was clear early on that one of the stories of this show as a whole was Los Ingobernables de Japon’s domination. They dominated on every match they were in. Naito slammed shut the book of his history with Tanahashi, and as amazing as Omega’s ascension has been Naito’s future looks even brighter. It was obvious who the people came out to see at Tokyo Dome, and he deserves the credit for it.

Great show, one of my favorites ever.  NJPW set out to hook in more consumers like me, and they absolutely nailed it with this show. I can’t wait to come out for NJPW when they come to CA this summer.

Really I’d give the entire show a major thumbs up. It was well worth staying up all night for and I just finished watching it again.

Cody’s debut was great, of course Naito/Tana was fantastic. Not sure I liked seeing the entire Bullet Club go down, though. Especially the YB.

The main event of course was beyond extraordinary. Very much admired the fact they protected Omega’s finisher, despite the various counters and setups.

My one nitpick is I would’ve loved to have seen a similar setup that we saw in the G1 final where he used prior Bullet Club member’s finishers en route to executing his own. That was brilliant storytelling and I think that would’ve the icing on the cake, even if he never did execute the OWA.

      Thumbs Up

      • MOTN: Tanahashi vs. Naito
      • Worst: Young Bucks vs. Beretta & Romero

Made it till 6 a.m. last night, and watched the final two matches this afternoon after avoiding any spoilers and not going on the site or Twitter. I watched the undercard in English commentary so I could follow along better and stay awake easier, and then the last two matches (this afternoon) with the Japanese as I don’t think anything matches the Japanese commentary when the main events go into those final 10 minutes of near fall spots. Really love having the option of both though to switch back and forth or rewatch with the other commentary.

MOTN for me was Tanahashi vs. Naito because of the overall pace and psychology of both guys working over each other’s knee, but the last 10-15 minutes of Omega vs. Okada from around that dragon suplex off the top rope was absolutely incredible.

Loved the KUSHIDA vs. Takahashi match and Shibata vs. Goto match as well. You could really feel the crowd come alive once the NEVER match came on. That’s what felt like was missing on the undercard, one of those Makabe vs. Ishii type matches to get things going.

The last four matches on the show were all awesome, undercard and most of the American vs. American matches were pretty forgettable. The G.O.D tag match was hilarious just for all the swearing and Corino cracking up at Tama Tonga going on a rant throughout the whole match. Cody vs. Robinson was decent, but mainly forgettable. Still glad to see Cody get a chance as this character though instead of the stupid Stardust gimmick. Cole vs. O’Reilly was a bit disappointing too. Japanese crowds just never seem into the “gaijin vs. gaijin” matches, feels like when you send cruisers out on Raw.

Thought the Young Bucks match was terrible, was the worst match of the night for me given that they were given a single tag match slot and could have put on a great match. Was glad we didn’t get an eight-man tag for once to start the show, but the psychology of the match right from the start with a countout tease after their first offensive move of the match (I know “psychology” + “YB” don’t go together) was “minus five stars” and the match just had absolutely no flow or pace except for going through the motions of double team spots, you could barely call it a “tag” match as all four guys would just be in there at any given time. It made ECW seem like they had stringent  rules in comparison.

Definitely big thumbs up for the last four matches, just wish they’d had another good strong style match a bit earlier in the card to even things out. Looking forward to the review later.

      Thumbs up

Best match: KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi
Worst match: Juice Robinson vs. Cody

I thought this was a really good card! The first half was what I expected it to be. Good wrestling but none of the matches really blew me away. I think things really picked up at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship bout. I really enjoyed Wrestle Kingdom and I thought it was worth staying up for.

      – Joshua Hadley

      **********

      Thumbs way, way up

Best match was Tanahashi/ Naito for me — beautiful storytelling and gorgeous wrestling that kept the crowd hot from start to finish and had some really clever callbacks to their previous matches. Some of the best, most consistent storytelling I’ve seen in wrestling.

Okada/Omega was great but took too long to build up — the first 10 or so minutes were very forgettable and, as I fear may be the case with a lot of Okada matches, things only really started to hot up in the last 15 minutes or so. That being said, it was still incredible to watch and had some crazy spots.

I would probably go IC match > NEVER > Heavyweight > Jr. Heavyweight, with all four being 4.5 stars or above

Worst match was probably Cody/ Juice. Juice tried his hardest, but Cody is completely unremarkable.

      – Jack Tainsh

Obviously the thoughts will be flooding in giving Omega/Okada ****** and the such and giving this whole show thumbs up for it’s performance and booking,

But I just want throw down my opinion of the three corner tag for the heavyweight tag championships, what an amazing character showcase it was, everyone got some of their stuff in, and it turned into one of the most un-comedy wrestling comedy matches of the card with the overkill of profanity by all members of the cast!

And also props to Yano and Ishii’s character dynamic, the Stone Pitbull appears to only be there to clothesline some heads and doesn’t care much for the titles, while Yano’s pretty chuffed with himself to have so much gold.

      – Sean Ellis

      Thumbs WAY Up!

      • Best Match: Tanahashi vs. Naito
      • Worst Match: None. New Japan Rumble was slow and gimmicky but still fun stuff. I mean, where the hell else are you going to see Billy Gunn, Elgin, Liger, Tenzan, Nagata, Scott Norton and Kobayashi….in 2017 nonetheless!!!!

Really enjoyed every match on the show, last four were all excellent.

Only minor bugaboo was that the Cody/Juice match worked the the leg/knee too much, given how Naito/Tanahashi played out and the match they were telling. So it felt as though they might have diluted the story a tad and was easily preventable given that it was basically a showcase match for Cody.

      – Jeff Parker

      **********

      Thumbs Up

      • Best Match: Omega/Okada
      • Worst Match: If you’re counting the trios gauntlet as separate matches, then Yujiro/Page/Fale vs. Los Ingobernables. If the trios gauntlet all counts as one big match, then Tiger Mask W vs. Tiger the Dark.

I watched this live, so tiredness probably factored into the undercard feeling so saggy to me, but the last four matches definitely made up for it. I had the Jr. Hvy title match at ****, the NEVER and IC matches at ****1/2, and the main event at *****.

I’m not sure how my feelings on the main event will change when I give it some space and then watch it again. I definitely think the match was lopsided, with the first 15 or 20 minutes just being an extended warm-up for the really crazy stuff. But the really crazy stuff was SO crazy that it blew me away even more than I thought these guys were capable of. If I had to compare the feeling of that last half of Omega/Okada to anything, it’d be the PWG BOLA ’16 Night 2 trios match, or the Dudleys/Hardys/E&C TLC match — matches where they burrow into a style and push right through it into overload territory, to the point where it cycles back around from “too much” into great again.

      – Patrick Tobin

      **********

      Thumbs UP

      • Best Match: Okada vs Omega
      • Worst Match: NEVER Trios Gauntlet Match

There was nothing really “bad” on the show. It took a while for the crowd to get into the show though, probably because of all of the foreign wrestlers on the undercard. The four top matches had something for everyone as far as wrestling style goes. The Jr & NEVER title matches were very good, and easily could have been match of the night on any other card.

But it is so hard to choose between Naito/Tanahashi and Okada/Omega for match of the night. I had to give it to Okada/Omega because I was more invested in that match, but the IC Title match was also amazing. Depending on your view of wrestling, you can pick either one and still be right. Omega set out to have the best match he could have at the dome, and I think he succeeded. I believe that at some point this year, he will have that Heavyweight title. He’s ready, and the fans are ready as well.

      – John Mannix

This is without question the best show that I have ever watched live. To be fair, I only got into the NJPW stuff last year, and my word is it the best wrestling I’ve ever seen.Thumbs are so far up that they are in the clouds right now.

      Anyway, the show.

New Japan Rambo/Rumble (no idea which one it’s called)

Fun way to open the show, happy that Big Mike is back, glad that he won. Thumbs up.

Tiger Mask W vs. Tiger the Dark.

Was six minutes long with no heat whatsoever from the crowd, fun spot fest, but wasn’t particularly into it. Thumbs middle.

      Bucks vs. Roppongi

Really great match, great story, didn’t expect the happy ending. Thumbs up.

      6 Man Gauntlet match

Not quite the cluster I was expecting it to be, still great fun. Opening between CHAOS and the Bullet Club was real good, considering there was the some total of two guys there that I like (Ospreay and YOSHI-HASHI). Disappointed that there was no face off between Ospreay and Ricochet considering as, well, we all wanted to see it. Vader probably felt a longing for it too.

CHAOS eliminated first, a pity, Jado didn’t even get to Flair flop. BC gone soon after, setting up a terrific finish between LIJ, and reigning champs Ricochet, Kojima and Finlay.

Pleased that SANADA got a belt. I’m absolutely on the bandwagon of “Yes, that guy is a superstar in the making.” Thumbs up.

      Cody vs Juice.

Bathroom break match. Okay, couple of good spots, Cody worked hard for heat. Thumbs middle.

      ROH Title match

Good match, not much time to work, honestly expected more heat from the crowd, considering Kyle has worked in NJPW for a long time and Cole got himself over pretty quickly after his debut.

Cole won, everyone  knows what that means. Thumbs middle.

      Tag Team Titles

Missed most of this match owing to stream issues. Caught last five minutes.

Seemed good, was surprised that I was one of the only people I know who picked Yano/Ishii to win, especially considering Yano’s Dome record. Thumbs middle, will watch full match on Friday.

      KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi.

Fantastic match. Almost any other show and this would be match of the night. Almost any other promotion and this would be their MOTY.

Was slightly surprised to see Hiromu win, expected KUSHIDA to win, Hiromu to take BOSJ and then the title. I love it whenever KUSHIDA pulls out the armbar counter from a dive, it’s such a cool spot. Thumbs way, way up.

      Shibata vs. Goto.

Stiff as heck. Paves way for Shibata to win the New Japan Cup. YAY! Thumbs way up.

Tanahashi vs. Naito for the IC belt.

I don’t know why I expected anything less from Tanahashi. I thought because he was older that he wouldn’t have this good of a match. I thought because his career was winding down he wouldn’t have this good of a match. I forgot one simple thing about the Ace of the Universe though: It was a big show.

He pulled probably Naito’s second best performance of all time from him after the Kenny Omega match in the G1’s. It was fantastic, terrific, all the superlatives I can think of. At this point, it was match of the night. Thumbs super duper up.

Okada vs. Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Title.

This is probably the best match I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched all of the Kobashi vs. Misawa matches, all of the Okada vs. Tanahashi matches, the best Manami Toyota matches, Akira Hokuto vs. Shinobu Kandori, all the great Toshiyo Yamada matches, all the best matches in the history of the fed.

They do not compare to the way I was feeling both during and after this match. I have seen all the previous January 4 shows in the lead up to this. Nakamura vs. Ibushi was the best NJPW Tokyo Dome match I had ever seen before this one.

The story telling, the absolute beating that both men took during this match, the near falls. I cannot really describe this match. It is just something else. Thumbs have officially broken off they are so far up.

      **********

      • Best Match: Okada vs Kenny Omega.
      • Worst match: Tiger Mask W vs Tiger the Dark

Kenny Omega was perhaps the most protected that I have ever seen a wrestler be in a match before. He hit no One Winged Angels, and not a single Croytes Wrath. It took FOUR rainmakers to keep him down. And for a measure on how good I thought this match was, I bought the first one as the finish.

For the record, if this were the fed, Kenny would hit at least two One Winged Angels. Those guys have no idea how to protect a move. Also: Was a sense of Misawa/Kobashi 99 in the main event. The champ taking all the punishment I can humanly imagine before somehow walking out with the belt.

Now I’m gearing up for LIJ vs. CHAOS gang wars part 2. Guess Gedo’s been watching some Dragon Gate.

What an amazing last four matches!!

Show started a bit slow. I liked the Bucks tag — 3.5 stars. Like ishii and Yano, good mix with the serious guy and the joker.

KUSHIDA is amazing and always shows up on the big shows. Really liked this match even though they missed a thing or two. 4.5 stars.

Tanahashi vs. Naito was awesome. Right when I thought Tanahashi had it won, it got even better!! 4.75 stars.

Omega and Okada was insane. Almost bordering on going too far with that dragon suplex off the top rope. As amazing as it was, that spot could have been left out and it still would have been a classic. I’m happy Okada seemed ok for the rest of the match.  That missile dropkick off the top was just awesome and Kenny’s springboard moonsault was Ibushi-esque. Those last like seven minutes were so crazy, Okada as always has the best finishing sequences. 5 stars.

Great show and great crowd. They weren’t into the foreigner vs foreigner matches which I guess were the intermission. But when the business end of the card came around they were into everything. Better than most US crowds.

      – Kyle Jaworski

I found WK11 to be the best WK yet, even surpassing WK9. The undercard was good and the big four main events all delivered. KUSHIDA vs. Takahashi was a fantastic way to start off the main events — 4 1/2*. Shibata vs. Goto was an incredible hard hitting match that lived up to what’s expected of big NEVER matches. The ending 20 or seconds were crazy. I’d go 4 3/4*.

Naito vs. Tanahashi was incredible with great storytelling and psychology, the crowd was eating everything up — 5*, however Omega vs. Okada was even more spectacular and it seems unfair that they both get the same rating. One of the best matches I’ve ever witnessed. It got an emotional investment out of me I’ve never had before. Just beautiful stuff for 46 minutes, absolute 5* classic in my eyes. Just a very easy watch PPV that delivered well in all matches.

      Thumbs Up

      • Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega
      • Worst Match: Cody Rhodes vs. Juice Robinson

What a main event match! After things slowed down with a mostly dead crowd for consecutive gaijin vs. gaijin singles matches, YTR picked them back up. And from Takahashi/KUSHIDA on it was one great match after another, culminating with an absolute classic in Okada vs. Omega.

      • Best Match: Omega Vs. Okada
      • Worst Match: Robinson Vs. Cody

I will be blunt. I have been watching wrestling for 25 years. I’ve seen Shawn Michaels WrestleMania matches, I’ve seen Misawa classics, I’ve seen matches from all styles and promotions from around the world, and quite frankly, and I can say this with absolutely no hyperbole whatsoever, that Omega/Okada was better than all of those matches in every way imaginable. If the rating system used was originally four stars and a fifth star had to be created when Terry Funk came around as the legend said, then you might as well start going by a six star scale because anything below that would be a disservice to this match and the competitors in it.

I also had the Goto/Shibata and Tanahashi/Naito matches at *****. I find it amazing that NJPW can put on a five hour show and it can feel so fulfilling and yet WWE can put on a six and a half hour show and it can feel so empty.

I was at the Tokyo Dome tonight for Wrestle Kingdom 11. Here are some notes from the stadium:

      • The New Japan Rumble was lots of fun, the crowd was into it. Liger and Scott Norton got the biggest reactions.
      • Cody vs. Juice Robinson got a great reaction from the crowd considering it was a bout between an unknown and an under-carder. While exiting, Cody climbed on the the players dugout on the right side and gestured to the crowd. He got a huge ovation from the fans seated there.
      • O’Reilly vs. Cole on the other hand got the least response from the crowd. It was clearly a mistake putting two all-foreigners singles matches back-to-back. Cole’s victory got little reaction as well.
      • Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA was when the crowd came alive
      • Tanahashi’s new theme BOMBED. Tanahashi tried to get the crowd chanting “GO ACE!” There were fans behind me giggling at his efforts.
      • The Okada vs. Omega match was amazing. I didn’t realize it was going long until the announcer announced they were on the 30 minute mark. That announcement got a big reaction. As did the announcement for 35, 40 and 45 minutes. The crowd knew they were experiencing something special.

      Thumbs Up

      • Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega
      • Worst Match: NEVER 6-Man Gauntlet

I felt like this year’s Wrestle Kingdom had a weaker undercard than the past two years, but once we got into the final stretch you just had great match after great match.

Will be tough to top Okada vs. Omega for MOTY.

      Thumbs up

      • Best: Okada vs. Omega
      • Worst: Cody vs. Juice

I thought the first five matches ranged from average to just plain boring, but then the show turned around bigly. Everything from the ROH Title match on was so damn great it made me have to give the show a big thumbs up. The last two matches were especially spectacular. Tanahashi/Naito demonstrated truly brilliant wrestling psychology while Omega/Okada put on an athletic clinic that should further cement them as two of the best of this generation.

Although I liked a lot of the booking (especially Omega being kept strong in defeat to build to a rematch and LIJ all being champions) I’m a bit baffled by the undercard booking. Why proven guys like Ishii, YOSHI-HASHI, Ospreay and Ricochet were buried in multi-man matches while guys like Rocky Romero, Cody, and Juice Robinson got so much more of the spotlight just doesn’t make sense. Even if they weren’t given long undercard matches it would definitely have made the first hour much more entertaining.
