Semifinals set for WWE Cruiserweight title tournament

WWE’s Cruiserweight Championship tournament is down to its final four wrestlers.

The last two quarterfinal matches took place on 205 Live last night, with Mustafa Ali and Drew Gulak advancing to the next round. Ali moved on by pinning Buddy Murphy, while Gulak submitted Mark Andrews with a dragon sleeper.

With that, the semifinal matchups are Cedric Alexander vs. Roderick Strong and Ali vs. Gulak. Alexander defeated TJP and Strong beat Kalisto to advance last week.

Alexander vs. Strong will take place on next Tuesday’s episode of 205 Live. Of the wrestlers from outside of the cruiserweight division that WWE had appear in the tournament, Strong is the only one to make it to the final four.

The winners of the semifinal matches will go on to WrestleMania, where the new Cruiserweight Champion will be crowned on April 8th. Whether that match will be on the pre-show or the main card will become clear as we get closer to WrestleMania.

Bracket set for WWE Cruiserweight title tournament

With the final first round matches taking place on 205 Live last night, WWE finally revealed the bracket for the Cruiserweight Championship tournament.

The bracket effectively follows the order that the matches were done on television. On the left side of it, Cedric Alexander will take on TJP and Roderick Strong will face Kalisto. Both of those matches are scheduled for next week. The winners will be matched up in one of the semifinals.

The right side of the bracket has Mustafa Ali vs. Buddy Murphy and Drew Gulak vs. Mark Andrews. Those matches will take place on the March 6th episode of 205 Live and will decide the other semifinal.

Murphy, a former NXT Tag Team Champion who hadn’t been on television in over a year until being announced for the tournament, made his 205 Live debut last night by defeating Ariya Daivari in a first round match. Ali also moved on to the quarterfinals by beating Jack Gallagher.

The new Cruiserweight Champion will be crowned in the tournament finals at WrestleMania in New Orleans on April 8th.

Buddy Murphy to debut in WWE Cruiserweight title tournament

With the final first round matches set, the full lineup for WWE’s Cruiserweight Championship tournament has been revealed.

It was announced on 205 Live last night that former NXT Tag Team Champion Buddy Murphy would be making his main roster debut against Ariya Daivari next week as part of the tournament. Mustafa Ali vs. Jack Gallagher will also take place on the episode as the first round comes to an end.

A video package spotlighted Murphy last night, with him talking about his past success in NXT and having to train to make the 205-pound weight limit. Murphy hasn’t appeared on television in over a year, but our NXT reporter JJ Williams named him as someone to watch in 2018 due to the quality of his house show matches.

As part of the storyline where general manager Drake Maverick is making changes to 205 Live, Maverick told Gallagher that he’ll no longer be allowed to wrestle in a suit.

Cedric Alexander, TJP, Kalisto, Roderick Strong, Mark Andrews, and Drew Gulak have advanced to the second round so far. The bracket for the tournament hasn’t been revealed, but the finals are scheduled for WrestleMania.
