South Korean supergroup BTS attends CMLL Arena Mexico show

Friday nights at Arena Mexico are becoming an increasingly popular tourist attraction, and CMLL had some very special guests in attendance on May 8.

South Korean supergroup BTS — one of the most popular music acts in the world — were in attendance for Friday’s event in Mexico City. Suga, Jimin, Jungkook, and Jin of BTS wore masks as they watched on from the front row. They got a shout out from top CMLL star Mistico, who wore a BTS jacket to the ring for the main event. Mistico then teamed with Titan to defeat Angel de Oro & Barbaro Cavernario.

Titan took notice of Suga wearing his mask and thanked him for it.

“Tonight, a band that’s extremely popular worldwide came to the show, and one of them was wearing my mask,” he tweeted. “Thank you so much.”

BTS have more than 80 million subscribers on YouTube. The K-pop band is currently on a world tour where they played Mexico City on Thursday and have two more stadium shows there this weekend. The next stops on the tour are in California and Las Vegas, including three nights at WrestleMania 41 and 42 host venue Allegiant Stadium.

In the 2025 Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards, CMLL won Promotion of the Year, Mistico won Wrestler of the Year, and Salvador Lutteroth III took home Promoter of the Year. The long-standing promotion drew more than one million fans to its home venue Arena Mexico in 2025. Last year also saw CMLL collaborate with Pokemon for an event, and music star/WWE celebrity Bad Bunny was in attendance for a show in December.

Persephone ‘out indefinitely’ following AEW Collision mist angle

Persephone is out of action.

Tony Khan announced shortly before AEW Collision on Saturday that the CMLL Women’s Champion is injured and “out indefinitely” after recently being misted by Julia Hart. He said that as a result, she would be unable to participate in the Survival of the Fittest match for the ROH Women’s Championship at Supercard of Honor on May 15. Khan reiterated that she would be out of future AEW and CMLL appearances.

Persephone wrestled on last week’s Collision, where she and Alex Windsor lost to the Triangle of Madness. Hart misted Persephone which led to the finish.

First-ever women’s Survival of the Fittest

It was announced last month that the first-ever women’s Survival of the Fittest would take place at Supercard of Honor. Maya World, Trish Adora, Yuka Sakazaki, Billie Starks, and Persephone have all won qualifying matches for the chance to dethrone Athena, who remains ROH Women’s Champion after over 1200 days, winning it back in December of 2022.

Earlier this year Tony Khan announced that Persephone had signed with AEW, becoming the latest CMLL wrestler to earn a dual contract.

New champion crowned at CMLL vs. MLW Arena Mexico show

MLW and CMLL presented a joint episode of Viernes Espectacular at Arena Mexico on Friday.

The show began three hours earlier than the typical Friday night Arena Mexico start time due to the May Day holiday.

Templario defeated KUSHIDA to win the MLW World Middleweight title in the main event. KUSHIDA had kicked out of Templario’s fisher suplex moments earlier before Templario finished him with a GTS followed by a powerbomb onto his knees.

In the semi-main event, Angel de Oro and Soberano Jr. defeated Austin Aries and Trevor Lee after Soberano hit a frog splash on Lee.

Neon defeated Diego Hill with a unique top-rope senton move.

MLW World Tag Team Champions The Skyscrapers (Bishop Dyer & Donovan Dijak) retained against Los Infernales after Dijak hit a moonsault from the top rope.

In the first title match and third bout on the show, Shotzi successfully defended the MLW World Featherweight title against Garra Negra with a top-rope senton.

— Garrett Gonzales and I will be back with a show this afternoon covering the news of the week and Bryan and I will have our weekend update on Sunday night.

— Just wanted to send sympathies and make mention of Tanea Brooks, the former Rebel in TNA and AEW, who was diagnosed with ALS. She has been battling health issues for years and they never could give her an answer as to what her problems were. She was about to have lung surgery and she found out that was the issue. ALS is as horrible a disease as there is. there is no coming back from it and you just continually get weaker. Among the high profile people who have had it include baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, Stephen Hawking, Roberta Flack, Dwight Clark, David Niven, Ezzard Charles and Steve McMichael. This was such a sad diagnosis. She put out a video today.

— Smackdown is tonight from Tulsa. Very little has been announced, only that Cody Rhodes will open the show, that Ricky Saints will debut and that Charlotte Flair will wrestle Jacy Jayne. They had 6,388 tickets out as of earlier today. There is some ticket sale softness for a lot of the WWE advance sales.

Jos LeDuc passed away 27 years ago today at the age of 54. Elizabeth Hulette, the famed Miss Elizabeth, was 42 when she passed away from an overdose 23 years ago. A little known fact is that in the early 80s, before she became famous Liz Hulette did a wrestling newsletter of sorts and was also on the ICW television show, a promotion run by Angelo Poffo, the father of Randy Savage. Kurt Von Poppenheim, an Oregon legend, was 89 when he passed away 23 years ago.

Sunday Update

— Bryan and I will be back tonight talking about all the wrestling news of the weekend for Wrestling Observer Radio. We had our Friday show with Garrett Gonzales that was really fascinating because it was being taped as the releases were happening so you get our responses and thoughts on all the WWE releases, the ones we know, the ones that were surprises, and in between.

— As most probably know, at the White House Correspondents Association dinner last night where shots were fired, among those in attendance were Dana White, whose interview after got a ton of play, along with Linda and Shane McMahon, who were there together. White was only a few feet away from President Trump when the secret service and police rushed into the ballroom at the Washington Hilton. White was near President Trump at a dinner with those from Paramount Skydance. “Inside, the whole event just started getting noisy, tables getting flipped over, guys running in with guns and they were screaming `Get down.” White told USA Today. “I didn’t get down. It was f***ing awesome. I literally took every minute of it in. It was a pretty crazy, unique experience. We were sitting right in front of the table, right in front of where the president was. Nobody got tackled but a guy came in looking for shooters and then came toward the table. I thought the shooter was by us or something.”

— For reasons I don’t really know, Programming Insider did have Wednesday ratings up yesterday and Dynamite on Wednesday was 616,000 viewers and an 0.10 in 18-49, much lower than usual. Then today I couldn’t find it. Some of that was airing three hours earlier than usual on the West Coast. I don’t have more info because it’s not up but the NBA was the top show on cable. The unfamiliar West Coast time should hurt about eight percent and this was down more than eight percent. But for a variety of reasons we have less info than usual on it. Hopefully more tomorrow.

— We’re looking for your thoughts on today’s Stardom show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

— Sayaka Kurara won the World of Stardom title from Saya Kamitani in the main event of today’s All Star Grend Queendom 2026″ show at the Yokohama Arena. The paid attendance of 8,015 was the largest for an all-women’s show in Japan since the 90s, even beating the Kamitani vs. Tam Nakano match last year. The Cosmic Angels would have had to disband if Kurara lost. Hanan beat Konami to win the Wonder of Stardom title. AZM & Miyu Amasaki beat Natsuko Tora & Ruaka to win the Goddesses of Stardom titles. Syuri beat Megan Bayne to retain the IWGP women’s title. People have been raving about the show and the top matches. (thanks to David Hayter)

— Mascara Dorada won the three-way over Black Tiger and Hechicero Friday night at Arena Mexico to win the Universal Champion of Champions tournament before a sellout of 16,000 fans. I was told this was a great card, and the matches to watch were the last three on the show.

— Besides the top matches at Arena Mexico and Stardom, the other two matches we’ve had heavily recommended from the weekend were on the Saturday New Japan show from Hiroshima where Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita won the IWGP jr. tag titles from Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X and Yuto-Ice & Oskar retained the IWGP tag titles over Hirooki Goto & Yoshi-Hashi.

— Ivy Nile competed last night in an NPC/IFBB fitness contest. She won three categories. The event was in Orlando. Among those cheering her on were Simone Johnson, Bianca Belair, Trick Williams, Lash Legend, Fallon Henley and at least another ten NXT wrestlers.

— A&E airs part one of a Von Erichs biography from 8-10 p.m. tonight while LFG is at 10 p.m. and there will be WWE Greatest Moments shows airing 10-11 p.m.

— Raw tomorrow has Penta vs. Rusev for the IC title and Bayley & Lyra Valkyria vs. Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez, plus a Joe Hendry concert, and Roman Reigns gives his answer to Jacob Fatu

— Kevin Nealon of Saturday Night Live fame challenged Danny DeVito to a match in either WWE or AEW. Nealon is the inspiration of the new Chris Jericho character.

— In Google searches for the weekend the UFC show yesterday was lower than usual at 105,000 as of the last look. The only other wrestling and MMA related stuff was Kairi Sane at No. 100 with 20,000, Aleister Black in the top 150 with 20,000 and Brock Rechsteiner, the son of Scott Steiner, who signed a free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans, at 10,000. Undrafted free agents have long odds against making a team, but it’s possible. His cousin, Bron Breakker was in a similar situation just a few years ago, didn’t make the NFL, but has thrived as a pro wrestler. Most expect him to follow in those footsteps if he doesn’t make it in the NFL.

— The San Francisco 49ers picked De’Zhaun Stribling in the second round of the draft. He is the nephew of Don Muraco.

— Last night’s UFC show was the first to date not to crack the top ten television shows in the U.S. on Paramount+ on Saturday. It was No. 1 in most of Central and South America, however, and that was enough for 3rd among TV shows and 5th including movies for the day on the service worldwide.

— Damian 666 was honored last Monday at Arena Jose Sulaiman in Monterrey which noted that he had just announced his retirement from wrestling.

— Brooke Hogan did a lengthy interview with Bubba the Love Sponge about the Hogan documentary on Netflix. She was very negative on it. The doc did not make the top ten any day this week but like I said, sometimes that’s a glitch. We’ll know how it did or didn’t do on Tuesday. I’ve only seen the first 20 minutes so want to make up my own mind, and most reviews I’ve heard weren’t positive on it.

— The CBS Morning News weekly show noted that a marker put up this week in Ellerbe, NC, honoring Andre the Giant.

— Tank Abbott, the former UFC and WCW wrestler turned 61 today. Mayor Glenn Jacobs (Kane) turned 59. Ron Reis, the former WCW giant turned 56. Jonathan Figueroa/Amazing Red turned 44. It was also the birthday of Larry Matysik, born 1947, the longtime announcer for Wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis who was one of the top announcers ever, Jerry Blackwell was born on this day in 1949 and Killer Karl Kox was born on this day in 1931. Fuzzy Cupid, a mini star born Len Stap, was 50 when he passed away 47 years ago. Announcer Lee Marshall was 65 when he passed away 12 years ago today. (thanks to Tony Richards)

— Tonight’s Arena Mexico show will be on the CMLL streaming service which is now a weekly thing. Mistico & Mascara Dorada & Neon face Barbaro Cavernario & Difunto & Clon, Atlantis Jr. & Esfinge vs. Black Tiger & Kushida, Angel de Oro vs. Rocky Romero, Shotzi vs. Skadi, Kemalito vs. Tengu for the micros title and a tournament with Dragon Legendario, Dragon de Fuego, Max Star, Fugaz, El Hijo del Pantera, Fuego, Pantera Jr. and Rey Pegaus.

Friday Update

CMLL logo (Image credit: CMLL)

— Garrett Gonzales and I will be up today doing a show covering the last week, and what a week it was. Bryan and I will be back for our weekend show on Sunday night.

— Releases are going on today in WWE. Those released are Zoey Stark (surprised because she’s very good and also rehabbing a knee injury), Alba Fyre, Joe Gacy, Andre Chase, Uncle Howdy and Nikki Cross. I was told to expect a fairly long list.

— Smackdown tonight is from Fort Worth, TX. The only match announced is Giulia vs. Tiffany Stratton for the US title. Rhea Ripley becomes a Smackdown regular tonight, plus Trick Williams & Lil Yachty are together again. They had 9,528 tickets out at last look from Wrestletix.

— Tonight is the 70th anniversary of pro wrestling at Arena Mexico. The show sold out 16,000 the day after the lineup was announced. CMLL announced the sellout last night but apparently all tickets were gone by Wednesday:

  • Dragon de Fuego & Dragon Legendario & Dragon Rojo Jr. vs. Elemental & El Hijo del Villano III & Villano III Jr.
  • Lluvia vs. Jarrochita vs. India Sioux vs. Tessa Blanchard vs. Zeuxis vs. Reyna Isis vs. Olympia vs. Keyra for the 70th Anniversary Cup
  • CMLL vs. Japan: Barbaro Cavernario & Esfinge & Soberano Jr. & Templario vs Kushida & Okumura & Shoma Kato & Yutani
  • CMLL vs. Don Callis Family for 70th Anniversary men’s Cup: Mistico & Neon & Angel de Oro & Ultimo Guerrero vs. El Clon & Mark Davis & Rocky Romero & Volador Jr.
  • Mascara Dorada vs. Black Tiger vs. Hechicero for the Universal Champion of Champions tournament final

— CMLL also announced Sunday and Tuesday at Arena Mexico are kids day shows, and a Copa Juniors (tournament with second generation wrestlers would be 5/22 and 5/29.

— I want to clarify all this because it is in the Observer but it’s become a topic of conversation. At Wednesday’s hearing before the U.S. Senate committee, Nick Khan, in running down the WBC (the idea is they are anti sanctioning bodies) said that they had purchased $265,000 worth of tickets for the Alvarez vs. Crawford fight. He compared that to Make-a-Wish purchasing $2,500 worth of tickets to WrestleMania. I, and others, noted being surprised that they would charge Make-a-Wish for tickets. And I’m still a little surprised. This led to people making up things or getting things wrong such as Make-a-Wish is forced to buy tickets as a charity and can’t accept freebies, somehow they are forced to buy tickets or else the families of the kids will be taxed for them a gift, none of which is true or even close to true. Khan was saying this as a way to make a comparison with the idea the WBC is using its money as a non-profit group for its members to spend like crazy buying tickets, which another charity, Make-a-Wish, does not do. So that’s why he said it. As far as WrestleMania goes, all Make-a-Wish kids if they were at the show would be comped. WWE did comp tickets for Make-a-Wish but had a number listed and Make-a-Wish’s purchased tickets were over the allotment. They did not involve kids themselves, but people who were involved in bringing the kids. In my mind they could have comped them as well, but they did comp tickets. So the theories of why “it had” to be like this are wrong. But they also did not force Make-a-Wish kids or Make-a-Wish to purchase tickets for the kids themselves.

— I’ve only seen part of the Hulk Hogan Netflix documentary. I was very surprised that it was not in the top ten for either Wednesday or Thursday for the day. It could be a glitch, last week’s Raw didn’t make the daily listing’s one day last week on a Tuesday, for Monday, when it obviously should have.

— We will be doing one weekend poll, covering Sunday’s Stardom show from Yokohama. You can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]. Saya Kamitani puts up the World of Stardom title against Sayaka Kurara, and if she loses, the Cosmic Angels group will cease to exist.

— In Mexico, FS2 aired the matches previously in the Universal tournament and hyped up tonight’s show last night. We had reported the midweek show as CMLL Classics, but it looks like it’ll be a show to build up the Friday show. Tonight’s show airs on FS 2 in Mexico with a 30 minute pre-show and then the full card.

— Tomorrow night at Arena Coliseo, which will almost surely sell out, has Shotzi Blackheart vs Sanely, Templario & Neon vs. Kushida & Yutani, Mascara Dorada & Niebla Roja & Soberano Jr. vs. Clon & Rocky Romero & Volador Jr., and Atlantis Jr. & Averno vs. Mark Davis & Hechicero. Sunday at Arena Mexico has Mistico & Dorada & Neon vs. Cavernario & Difunto & Clon, Atlantis Jr. & Esfinge vs. Black Tiger & Kushida, Angel de Oro vs. Romero in a lightning match, Shotzi vs Skadi and Kemalito vs. Tengu for the micros title. Dorada & Neon vs. Cavernario & Soberano Jr. headlines Puebla on Monday.

— New Japan RedZone will air at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning Eastern and 1 a.m. Pacific from Hiroshima:

  • Yuto-Ice & Oskar defend the IWGP tag titles against Hirooki Goto & Yoshi-Hashi
  • Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X defend the IWGP jr. tag titles against Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita
  • Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji & Gedo & Daiki Nagai vs. Callum Newman & Jake Lee & Jakob Austin Young & Zane Jay

— A&E starts back on Sundays with a WWE block. From 8-10 p.m. will be part one of a two part biography series on the Von Erichs, followed by LFG at 10 p.m.

— The Lucha Underground Twitter account did a tease like it would be returning. Nobody seems to know what that means. This may be some kind of a deal made somewhere to air the old episodes.

— TNA announced for the 5/14 tapings in Sacramento, a Battle Royal to determine a TNA title shot plus AJ Francis vs. KC Navarro in a street fight.

— Kirk White’s Big Time Wrestling on 5/1 at the Newark, CA Pavilion features a meet and greet with Tommaso Ciampa plus QT Marshall vs. Royce Isaacs with Ciampa as referee, Aaron Solo vs. Tome Filip, Satnam Singh vs. Ben Bishop, Vert Vixen vs. Indi Hartwell, Viva Van vs Simone, Bad Dude Tito vs Jordan Cruz and more.

CMLL presents its first-ever full international show today at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main event was originally set to be Mistico vs. Hechicero. However, a late change now has Mistico teaming with Templario against Hechicero and Angel de Oro.

Other matches scheduled for the show include Claudio Castagnoli vs. Atlantis Jr., Blue Panther vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Persephone vs. Tessa Blanchard, and Máscara Dorada teaming with Neon against Capitán Suicida and Flip Gordon. A tag match will also see Chamuel & Tengu vs. Kemalito & Periquito Sacaryas.

The full lineup for the show is below:

  • CMLL Light Heavyweight Champion Mistico & Templario vs. CMLL Heavyweight Champion Hechicero & Angel de Oro
  • Claudio Castagnoli vs. Atlantis Jr.
  • Blue Panther vs. Ultimo Guerrero
  • Máscara Dorada & Neon vs. Capitán Suicida & Flip Gordon
  • Persephone vs. Tessa Blanchard
  • Chamuel & Tengu vs. Kemalito & Periquito Sacaryas

Our live coverage begins at 6 p.m. Eastern.

*********************************************

Kemalito & Periquito Sacaryas defeated Chamuel & Tengu

Sacaryas and Tengu started off, trading arm drags until the former writhed on the ground. Tengu trapped Kemalito in a modified surfboard stretch. Kemalito recovered momentarily with a hurricanrana. Chamuel faceplanted Kemalito with a double-underhook slam. Sacaryas attempted to make the save, but Chamuel stomped him down and slapped him in the corner. Tengu, to make matters worse for Kemalito, Gorilla pressed him ten times until tossing him to the mat. Sacaryas evicted Tengu outside with a Flying Headscissors. Kemalito splashed from the top rope, knocking Chamuel flat.

Kemalito mounted a comeback for his team, dizzying Chamuel with multiple arm drags. Tengu rocked Kemalito with a double-underhook. A Springboard Splash resulted in a miscommunicated two-count, where the referee accidentally hit the mat a third time. Kemalito connected with a DDT and another Springboard Splash, ultimately acquiring the pinfall.

I see why Kemalito is a beloved wrestler from the lucha libre scene. Sacaryas was also a joy to watch. However, I was impressed by Tengu and Chamuel as well.

Persephone (c) defeated Tessa Blanchard for the CMLL World Women’s Championship

Blanchard swiftly gained power of Persephone’s arm, twisting and stretching it. Persephone wrenched it back with a side headlock. They traded wrist control, later transitioning into more headlocks. Persephone snuck in a rollup. She’d soon apply pressure to Blanchard’s neck with her palm. A missile dropkick tumbled the challenger across the ring. Persephone ducked a lariat, and despite her weakened leg courtesy of Blanchard, she sent her opponent outside with a dropkick.

Dodging yet another lariat, Persephone blasted Blanchard with a superkick. With a snarl across her face, Blanchard bullied Persephone with boots to the face. Though tenderized by successive kicks to the chest, Persephone hobbled back to her feet and withstood multiple strikes. Persephone survived a cutter and delivered a German suplex on the ring apron. Blanchard evaded a moonsault to unleash a trilogy of cutters. Rushing Blanchard’s skull into the top turnbuckle, Persephone thwarted her once and for all with a Crucifix Bomb.

Persephone is such a hoss and a believable babyface. It was interesting to see the circumstances of this: a CMLL talent with a dual contract with AEW against someone who appears regularly in TNA. I know, contracts and handshake deals and whatnot. Still, a great match, despite me not being a fan of the challenger.

Blue Panther defeated Ultimo Guerrero

Guerrero denied the Las Vegas fans in attendance the chance to show love for Panther. He swept the legs of his opponent and dropkicked him outside. Untying the strings on Panther’s mask, Guerrero stomped on Panther’s shoulders in rapid-fire succession in the corner. The blue luchador toppled his bare-faced rival outside with a senton. Guerrero took advantage of the unfocused Panther, pushing him off the top rope following the latter’s removal of his own mask. Panther retaliated with a Flying Headscissors outside and again, onto the floor. Guerrero reunited with the concrete floor thanks to Panther’s Flying Crossbody from the ramp.

Seeking another Flying Headscissors from the top rope, Panther instead fell victim to Guerrero’s powerbomb. The Nevada crowd cheered as Panther devastated Guerrero with a tope con suicida. Guerrero meandered outside the ring, falling prey to a Flying Crossbody. Panther persevered through a superplex. A Spanish Fly gave the win to a proud Blue Panther.

Seeing men like these two remain as crisp as they are at their age with performances like these is a thrill. Panther doesn’t look like he should be able to move in the way that he does, but that sure doesn’t stop him.

Barboza, Difunto & Soberano Jr. defeated Esfinge, Valiente Jr. & Xelhua

Xelhua and Soberano Jr exchanged control over the other’s legs, leading to the former sneaking in a quick roll-up. Locking in Soberano Jr’s legs, Xelhua twisted around the ring; Soberano returned the favor. Valiente Jr toppled Difunto outside with a dropkick. Soberano Jr, Difunto, and Barboza harassed Esfinge, with Difunto inflicting more pain via a dropkick. Barboza sent Xelhua rolling with a missile dropkick. Difunto ensnared Esfinge so that Soberano Jr could land a leg drop.

Esfinge initiated another comeback with Xelhua, as both crushed the rudos with tilt-a-whirl backbreakers. Xelhua and Esfinge tapped Barboza and Difunto out with Nudo Egipcio. The rudos teased a falling out before embracing to exasperate the tecnico team. Xelhua thrusted each rudo with arm drags. The tecnicos collided with the rudos into the steel barricades. Racked with exhaustion, Xelhua and Esfinge struck Barboza and Difunto with Flying Crossbodies. Soberano Jr snatched Valiente Jr on his shoulder, which he directed into a Tombstone Piledriver to end the match.

These six men were a rollercoaster to watch. I totally had the tecnicos pegged as the ones to win. Soberano Jr was the standout for me.

Máscara Dorada & Neon defeated Capitán Suicida & Flip Gordon

Dorada withstood much of Suicida’s offense, countering each time with headscissor takedowns. Suicida diverted his attention to Neon, crashing him into the barricade with a dive. Neon and Dorada flung the rudo team outside with headscissors. Dorada sent Suicida into Neon’s cutter, courtesy of a hurricanrana. Neon burst Gordon with a dropkick, who retaliated with the Star-Spangled Stunner. The tecnicos coordinated moonsaults to disorient the rudos. Neon landed a Double Springboard Moonsault and Dorada, a 450 Splash to Suicida and Gordon, respectively.

I’m always in awe of Dorada, but he and Neon mixed like chocolate and peanut butter. Suicida had some really cool gear.

Claudio Castagnoli defeated Atlantis Jr

AEW’s Death Rider spared no second in attacking Atlantis Jr, chopping him against the ropes. Atlantis Jr’s misfortunes continued when Castagnoli resumed chopping him against the ring post and unleashing a gut punch against the barricade. The competitors battered each other until Castagnoli dropped Atlantis Jr with a brainbuster. Atlantis Jr landed a comeback through a dive between the ropes that pushed Castagnoli into the guardrail.

Castagnoli returned to glory momentarily with another brainbuster, but a double-clothesline flattened each man. Atlantis Jr clobbered Castagnoli with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and DDT. In his frustration, Castagnoli rocked Atlantis Jr with several European Uppercuts, each of them resulting in 2-count pins. Atlantis Jr endured a Giant Swing and converted that into a crucifix pin to no avail. Castagnoli replied with his Neutralizer, which put away Atlantis Jr down for good.

Castagnoli clearly has a beating heart for Mexico and CMLL; his selling was so fluid. It’s shown in the flourishes between moves in AEW and CMLL.

Main Event

Místico & Templario defeated Hechicero & Ángel de Oro

The menacing Hechicero cornered Templario, yet they grappled to a stalemate on the canvas. Hechicero maintained full dominance on Templario’s left arm, which Oro was all too happy to continue in his part. Oro and Hechicero tried their best to keep Templario isolated from Místico, yet he ultimately came in by way of a Springboard Crossbody. Hechicero grounded him with arm drags and tore at Místico’s mask. Templario dropped Oro with a Fireman’s Carry, while Místico punctured Hechicero with a splash to score the first fall.

Each time Templario and Místico steadied for some sort of dive, Oro and Hechicero would hide behind the audience or the barricade. The rudo team alienated Templario from Místico, tenderizing him with kick after kick. Hechicero twisted Místico’s arm and neck with his technical skill, allowing Oro to tie the score with a Frog Splash.

Místico planted Oro with a Code Red. Hechicero swung him around before being dropped face-first by Templario. Hechicero paid dearly moments later once Templario hit a massive senton on him. Místico tapped out Oro with an armbar to win the final fall.

This main event solidified why these men are often brought up high in the conversation as the best of the best in CMLL. Místico is naturally credited for his insane pull in the revolutionary two years of CMLL’s boom period. With Hechicero having AEW pull and Templario holding NJPW sway, they added familiarity for unaware audiences. I’m glad this gave a fond spotlight to Oro though, as he was hugely entertaining here.

Final Thoughts

Given that CMLL is in a different market right now, I expected less of a crowd turnout in the USA. While the seats weren’t filled in completely, far more showed up than I thought. I shouldn’t be surprised. CMLL’s having an insane run in Mexico, completely selling out arenas. They didn’t oversell or undersell themselves here. Instead, they showcased just what makes CMLL one of the hottest promotions in wrestling right now.

And they brought their A-game for this historic show. With CMLL, so much heart and thought go into everything. Even the tiniest details matter, adding substance to each match. What they brought on April 16, 2026, was what they can be expected to deliver: the soul of lucha libre and the culture thereof. I recommend giving the entire show a watch.

Monday Update

AAA on Fox 4/11/26 screenshot
AAA on Fox 4/11/26 screenshot

— Bryan and I will be back with Wrestling Observer Radio to talk about Raw, WrestleMania, Dynasty Alberto El Patron, crazy ratings stories, and hopefully some other promotions.

— The final Raw before WrestleMania is in Sacramento tonight. All the top stars on the Raw brand, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Paul Heyman, Gunther, etc are scheduled. Royce Keys put on social media he was going to the show since it’s not a far drive. No matches there were 11,279 tickets out the last time I checked earlier today, so it will be close to sold out.

— The Wrestling Observer will be out one day early this week because I’m going to WrestleMania.

— Tony Khan last night announced Claudio Castagnoli to challenge Kevin Knight on Wednesday for the TNT title plus MJF vs. Darby Allin for the AEW title in Everett, WA. Allin started his wrestling training in Everett, WA, under Buddy Wayne.

— For Thursday’s CMLL show at the Pearl, the main event has been changed from Mistico v.s Hechicero to a tag team with Mistico & Templario vs. Hechicero & Angel de Oro.

— AEW Dynasty did 20,000 searches on Google. It’s better than some AEW PPV shows and worse than others. The UFC show on Saturday topped 1 million.

— CMLL sold out Arena Puebla today with Mistico & Neon in the main event against Hechicero & Volador Jr.

— For this past week from Sunday through Saturday, CMLL sold 50,000 tickets to pro wrestling events in Mexico City, Puebla and Guadalajara. Aside from WWE at its hottest periods ever or WrestleMania or stadium show weeks like AEW in London, I don’t know of any promotion that has done that working in just three markets.

— Hechicero, who was not at the AEW show last night, had seven flights in 48 hours last week.

— The Grande Americano vs. Grande Americano angle on Saturday’s AAA show was great. Comedian Ojas de Huevos, who calls himself the Stevie Wonder of Mexico because he’s blind, ran down the Gable version. Gable went after him and with him being blind, Andrea Bazarte, the interviewer, who some know as Kaiser’s girlfriend (legit, but it was never used previously or said on television) tried to stop him and slapped him in the face. Gable was about to go over her when Kaiser ran down to attack Gable. The two continted to come out of backstage and fight multiple times the rest of the show. They have a mask vs. mask match on 5/30 at Arena Monterrey, or at least that was the plan a few weeks ago. Some media outlets brought up the idea that they fired Nino Hamburguesa for doing something physical with a fan but not Grande Gable. Of course the two things are completely different.

— TNA for Thursday’s live TV from Syracuse, NY has EC 3 vs. Eric Young, AJ Francis vs. KC Navarro, plus The System with Alisha Edwards and Mustafa Ali and The Hardys will appear.

— The Hardys will appear at WWE World on 4/17.

— Argentina Rocca, one of the biggest drawing cards in pro wrestling history, was born on this day in 1921. Manuel Rivera, the original Dr. Wagner was born on this day in 1936. Stan Stasiak, who was WWWF champion for nine days as a transition from Pedro Morales to Bruno Sammartino in 1973, was born on this day in 1937. Diane Von Hoffman was born on this day in 1962. Sir Mo/Bobby Horne was born on this day in 1967. Don Duffy passed away 11 years ago today at the age of 80. Scott Norton made his pro wrestling debut 37 years ago today. (thanks to Tony Richards)

— Defy and Dragon Gate joint show results from Friday night in Portland, OR: Judas Icarus & Travis Williams & Evan Rivers b Ho Ho Lun & Kzy & Ben K, Adam Brooks b La Estrella, Yamato & Dragon Kid b Eddie Pearl & Ricky Gibson, Marina Shafir b Amira to retain the Defy women’s title, Madoka Kikuta & Kai & Ishin b Cody Chhun & Guillermo Rosas & Steven Borden Jr., Bryan Keith b Susumu Yokosuka to retain the Defy men’s title (thanks to Matt Farmer)

— For those going to Las Vegas this week, Larry Lawrence will be doing a wrestling related stand-up comedy show on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. local time at Area 15.

— For Saturday night’s UFC show, there were some unique judging scores. Reporters were 100 percent for Chris Padilla over MarQuel Mederos, most 30-26 and some 29-27. However, the fight was officially a draw as judge Derek Clearly gave Mederos round one and two and Padilla a 10-8 third due to a foul. Eliseo Rodriguez gave Mederos the second and third rounds. Solimar Miranda only gave Mederos the second round.

— El Elemental, the husband/boyfriend of Catalina wrote this regarding her leaving CMLL to AAA and regarding the idea he would as well:
“I have received many messages and questions regarding my career, so I would like to set the record straight. I am focused, stable, and very comfortable at CMLL. I have no plans to switch promotions; my commitment is to continue growing and proving myself inside the ring. On a personal note, a few months ago I decided to end my romantic relationship with La Catalina. Consequently, I completely disassociate myself from any decisions she makes regarding her personal or professional life. We are each following our own paths, and I am fully focused on mine. This will be the only comment I make on the matter. I am grateful to the fans who have always shown their support. The rest will be settled in the ring. LET’S GO!”

— StrangleMania from Juggalo Championship Wrestling has announced this show for 4/17 at the Horseshoe in Las Vegas:

  • Vampiro vs. PCO vs. Big Vito in Vampiro’s latest retirement match
  • Matt Riddle vs. Cokane vs. Nic Nemeth vs. Caleb Konley with Vince Russo in Konley’s corner and EC3 as referee
  • 2 Tuff Tony & Willie Mack & Rob Van Dam vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson & KENTA
  • Alice Crowley & Dani Mo vs. J Rod & ? with Katie Forbes as ref
  • and four other matches.

WOL: Corporate wrestling & the backward psychology of SmackDown

It’s the Saturday Wrestling Observer Live with Jim Valley.

As backward as WWE SmackDown was last week, this week’s psychology was just as puzzling if not worse. The heel gets discount tickets for fans, tells fans not to buy WrestleMania Sunday and rips the main event wrestlers without saying anything positive about them.

This build is breaking virtually every rule when it comes to promos.

Plus, Danhausen, WCW 1998, AEW Collision, Dynasty, TNA Rebellion, AAA, and more.

Friday Update

Damian Priest
Damian Priest

— We have  a schedule change for this week as Garrett and I will be doing our show Sunday night because of WWE in San Jose today, and Bryan and I will be back tomorrow night because this is a crazy weekend.

— SmackDown tonight is the next to last SmackDown before WrestleMania so it will be mostly promos and hype for the show. Royce Keys debuts, which makes sense given he’s from East Palo Alto and grew up about 20 miles away from the SAP Centers.

The show will focus on the key Smackdown matches for Mania, Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu, Sami Zayn vs. Trick Williams as the keys. They will continue the Pat McAfee angle with the expectation of Jelly Roll involvement this week or next. We have a long story on the McAfee angle in the current issue. They had 10,036 tickets out as of last word so again it will be a big crowd but not a sellout, likely well over $1 million house, usual for Friday nights.

— Damian Priest said that he thought the McAfee interview angle sucks and said others did as well. Its very rare people will comment on things like that in a negative fashion. It should be noted last week’s television rating was the best the show had done in months. I guess we’ll see how it changes or plays out tonight.

— AEW Dynamite did 654,000 viewers with an 0.14 in 18-49. It was down in total viewers from recent weeks but demo numbers were in the usual range. It was third in the time slot behind FOX News and the NBA. The lead-in was lower so the start was lower. The strongest points were the Chris Jericho/Demand segment, Tommaso Ciampa vs. Mascara Dorada and the FTR and Adam Copeland & Christian Cage segments with the Ciampa match being the high point.

— CMLL has week two of the Universal tournament of champions, with the CMLL title holders (except Mascara Dorada who qualified for the finals last Friday), a tournament format with Mistico, Hechicero, Neon, Templario, Niebla Roja, Angel de Oro and Stigma, plus Atlantis Jr. & Esfinge & Flip Gordon vs. Difunto & Barboza & Furia Roja.

— Just to clear up some confusion, the new CMLL television deal announced yesterday is for FS2 in Mexico, not the United States. It looks like they will be airing the Friday night shows live. I don’t know if it’s full shows or partial. That is likely to be explained later.

— Reports from Edmonton were that the Young Bucks vs. Clon & Hechicero match was great.

— We are doing polls this weekend for the TNA Rebellion show and Sunday’s AEW Dynasty show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match from both shows to [email protected]

— Randy Savage will be inducted into the MJN Center (Poughkeepsie, NY) Hall of Fame during the 5/16 Awesome Championship Wrestling show. The MJN Center is the former Mid Hudson Civic Center which housed WWF television tapings and regular house shows.

— TNA Rebellion for tomorrow night

  • Mike Santana vs. Eddie Edwards for the TNA title
  • Matt & Jeff Hardy defend the tag titles against Brian Myers & Bear Bronson
  • Trey Miguel vs. Mustafa Ali for the International title which should be great
  • Leon Slater vs. Cedric Alexander for the X title
  • Mickie James & Taryn Terrell & ODB vs. The Elegance Brand in a hardcore country rules match
  • Elijah vs. Frankie Kazarian
  • Nic Nemeth vs. AJ Francis
  • Moose vs. Agent Zero
  • Ryan Nemeth vs. BDE

— ONE strawweight champion Xiong Jingnan signed with UFC and debuts against Angela Hill on 5/30 in Macau. Jingnan, 38, left ONE in March when they announced they would not be promoting women’s strawweight fights going forward.

— UFC 327 comes from Miami tomorrow night. The entire show airs on Paramount+ with four fights airing on CBS from 8-10 p.m.

  • Charles Radtke (170) vs. Francisco Prado (170)
  • Kelvin Gastelum (185) vs. Vicente Luque (185)
  • MarQuel Mederos (155) vs. Chris Padilla (158) – Padilla missed weight and is being fined 20 percent of his purse
  • Tatiana Suarez (116) vs. Loopy Godinez (116)
  • Mateusz Gamrot (156) vs. Esteban Ribovics (155)

CBS portion:

  • Kevin Holland (171) vs. Randy Brown (171)
  • Patricio Pitbull Freire (145) vs. Aaron Pico (145)
  • Cub Swanson (146) vs. Nate Landwehr (145) – This looks to be Swanson’s retirement fight
  • Dominic Reyes (205) vs. Johnny Walker (205)

Back exclusive to Paramount+:
Curtis Blaydes (261) vs. Josh Hokit (233)
Azamat Murzakanov (205) vs. Paulo Costa (205)

CMLL Viernes Espectacular confirmed to air live weekly on Fox Sports Mexico

CMLL’s Viernes Espectacular shows are set to air live on Fox Sports in Mexico.

Earlier this week, CMLL announced it will air a new weekly show on Friday nights on Fox Sports 2 beginning April 24.

Fox Sports published a press release on April 10 confirming that the show will be a weekly live broadcast from Arena México.

Fox Sports’ press release reads (translated from Spanish via Google Translate):

“FOX Sports México will broadcast Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre live every Friday from Arena México.

The historic ‘Viernes Espectacular’ shows will be available starting April 24.

Mexico City, April 10, 2026 — Starting Friday, April 24, fans will be able to watch live every Friday the traditional lucha libre events held at the historic Arena México, a venue known as the ‘Cathedral of Lucha Libre.’

With more than nine decades of history, CMLL is one of the most important wrestling promotions in the world and a major reference point in Mexican sports entertainment, recognized for its tradition, legendary rivalries, and the creation of major stars.

CMLL events are known for their intensity in the ring, the contrast between técnicos and rudos, and the spectacle of a style of wrestling deeply rooted in Mexican culture.

With this addition, FOX Sports México is adding CMLL’s traditional events to its programming, bringing its audience one of the most representative spectacles of Mexican lucha libre every week.”

CMLL owner Salvador Lutteroth III was recently a guest on Wrestling Observer Radio and spoke about the company’s upcoming show in Las Vegas on April 16. It will be the first time CMLL has presented a full show outside of Mexico, and Lutteroth said it is an opportunity for the company to showcase its top talent.
