NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 32 night three results, updated standings

The Best of the Super Juniors continued on Wednesday with 10 tournament matches at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Two huge upsets closed out the show.

In the main event, Kosei Fujita defeated four-time BOSJ winner Hiromu Takahashi. He used his new finisher, the Thrill Ride (a reverse Attitude Adjustment–like move), to pick up the win. After the match, Fujita said he’s learned a lot from Takahashi and also promised to win the whole tournament.

AEW’s Nick Wayne pulled off a big upset when he defeated IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and defending BOSJ winner El Desperado in the semi-main event. The story of the match was Desperado targeting Wayne’s knee, which left Wayne unable to perform several moves near the finish. Wayne also fought out of a Numero Dos despite the injury. The finish saw Wayne go for a Killswitch, but Desperado countered and sent him into the turnbuckle. Wayne then hit Wayne’s World followed by a Tiger Destroyer (a Canadian Destroyer with double underhooks) for the win.

“This wasn’t just an upset—it was a statement win for the 19-year-old prodigy,” wrote NJPW1972.com of Wayne’s victory.

Earlier in the show, Francesco Akira defeated Ninja Mack in the second bout with his Fireball finisher. Moments earlier, both Mack and Akira landed on their feet after a top rope hurricanrana. As Mack posed after the move, Akira caught him with a meteora. El Phantasmo, who was on commentary, said Mack may have been too focused on creating another “viral moment” like the one from his first match, when he backflipped across the arena. That could be a storyline for him throughout the tournament.

At the end of night four, only Kosei Fujita, Nick Wayne, Robbie Eagles, and MAO remain undefeated.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 32 night two results, updated standings

The Best of the Super Juniors 32 continued on Sunday.

Night two of this year’s tournament took place from Iwanuma, Miyagi and featured matches in both the A and B Blocks.

Ninja Mack backflipped his way to a victory against Robbie X in the first tournament match on the show. He countered a springboard move with a Shuriken Kick for the win. He opened the bout by backflipping from the ring, and all the way down the entrance ramp before kicking his opponent. NJPW1972.com would later write that Mack likely has a lock on “moment of the tournament.”

MAO picked up a win over Kevin Knight with a Iai Kick in the second tournament match. The two shook hands after the bout.

Clark Connors was on the show after having wrestled in Ontario, California at NJPW Resurgence on Friday. He defeated Master Wato with a No Chaser in his first tournament match on Sunday.

Robbie Eagles made YOH tap to a Ron Miller Special in the semi main event. He targeted YOH’s leg during the bout leading to the submission. YOH now gets to go through the rest of the round-robin with a storyline-injury.

Today’s main event saw Ryusuke Taguchi pick up a win in his hometown of Iwanuma. He defeated Taiji Ishimori, who is also from Miyagi, via a modified ankle lock Taguchi has named “Oh My and Garankle.”

NJPW later posted an English translation of Taguchi’s post-match comments:

“Thank you for the chants. Thank you for so many of you showing up here in Iwanuma, and thank you for all the support. The elementary and middle school kids were able to come here for free today, so we got so much support from the kids. For you to understand how pro-wrestling can give you strength is something that brings me so much joy so I hope you found a new hobby today. There are so many more great wrestlers for you to discover and follow. My opponent Ishimori today, as well as YOH and MAO are from Miyagi prefecture. We produce a lot of great wrestlers but I guess the Saito brothers are most famous. I’ll do my best to be as famous as them. Right now Goto is in the lead of the Goto Revolution and he wants us to join, so I will. The G in IWGP stands for Goto, and the t in ‘the’ in Best of the Super Juniors stands for Taguchi. I am the PR ambassador of Iwanuma and the world saw how great Iwanuma is today! Everyone! The T in the ‘the’ in Best of the Super Juniors stands for Taguchi!”

Matches from both the A and B Blocks were featured on the show.

The first tournament match of the night featured AEW’s Nick Wayne making his tournament debut against House of Torture’s SHO. Wayne picked up the win with a Prodigy Plex. He had the crowd behind him as well, after SHO insulted the fans and attempted multiple low blows throughout the bout.

The semi-main event of the evening saw four-time tournament winner Hiromu Takahashi against two-time tournament winner KUSHIDA. The finish of the match saw KUSHIDA almost score the victory after the two excahnged pinning combinations just before Takahashi locked in Maximum The Holding (A cloverleaf type submission) and made KUSHIDA tap.

The main event of the night saw IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado against CMLL’s Titan. This is the fourth year in a row that the two have met in the tournament, having been in the same block for 3 and meeting in the semifinals of BOSJ 30. Desperado made Titan tap to his Numero Dos stretch-muffler submission hold on Saturday. The two rivals are now 2-2 in singles matches against one another. After the match, Desperado said he wants to defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title against TItan at some point, be it in Japan or Mexico. He also said that he’s only won BOSJ twice, and still considers himself as chasing the tournament’s all-time most-decorated competitor, Takahashi, who has won it four times (Jushin Liger won it three times.)

Francesco Akira to miss remainder of NJPW BOSJ tournament due to injury

Francesco Akira is out of the NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 31 tournament.

NJPW announced late Tuesday that Akira will miss the remainder of this year’s BOSJ due to a left knee injury suffered on Sunday’s show.

With Akira unable to continue in B Block, his opponents will be awarded forfeit victories for their scheduled bouts. The current BOSJ standings are here.

The promotion first announced that Akira was pulled from Tuesday’s show where he was scheduled for a tag bout, with his status for the remainder of the tournament up in the air pending medical evaluation. After being evaluated, NJPW made the announcement:

Thank you for supporting New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

After missing his match in Himeji May 21 due to a left knee injury, medical evaluation has determined that Francesco Akira should miss the remainder of the Best of the Super Jr. 31 series.
