Shad Khan confirmed as lead investor in All Elite Wrestling

In a release Tuesday morning with some quotes ahead of their kickoff rally in Jacksonville, FL, Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL) owner Shad Khan confirmed he is the lead investor in All Elite Wrestling, the fledgling promotion involving the Young Bucks, Cody, and more.

From the release:

“I am the lead investor, a supporter and a backer of All Elite Wrestling, and I anticipate great things today and into the future for AEW and everyone who has worked passionately on this week’s launch. I know AEW will be welcomed by wrestling fans here in the U.S. and throughout the world who are ready for something new and authentic. AEW will work hard to deliver on that promise.”

Khan also clarified his son Tony’s involvement and that AEW will run independently from his other businesses:

“As important, I am the father – the proud father – of Tony Khan, who will serve in a leadership role at AEW during the 2019 launch and in the years ahead. Tony will assemble a great team to take AEW over the top, for the benefit of everyone who loves the wrestling industry, while continuing to serve in his current capacities with the Jaguars and Fulham.

AEW will operate as an organization completely independently from my other interests. It will not deter attention or divert resources from any of my businesses, teams, projects or investments. At the same time, AEW will enjoy the same full commitment I given to everything and everyone in my life – my family and friends, my business and, in recent years, to sports, hospitality and now entertainment.”

Tony then gave a statement about AEW:

“Wrestling fans are a community unlike most others. I’ve been a part of this community since I was 7 years old, and I can tell you that wresting fans see the world every day through a special lens. We see wrestling in Hollywood films and tv shows, we see elements of wrestling in the presentation of sports and in the marketing of grandiose star athletes, and we certainly see wrestling in politics.

The wrestling community is a constant; its members are diverse, we are physically located on all corners of the planet, yet we are constantly connected. Recently, a new family has formed, bonded by love and respect for wresting but armed with a vision and resources that have never before been available to the wrestling community.  Our objective is to connect our community closer than ever before through All Elite Wrestling, or AEW.

AEW does not mean any less of a continued commitment to existing obligations and duties that I have, or my family has, to our business and sports interests. That will never be the case. What’s important is that every individual decision we make as family, whether it’s ownership or investment in a team or property, is 100 percent beneficial to those specific interests. I will always welcome that accountability and responsibility, as nothing is more important than serving our supporters and friends.

AEW will launch with a roster of the top wrestlers in the world. While they’ll clash in what will be some of the most intense and fast-paced contests ever sanctioned in the squared circle, they’ll also share a common goal: to make this the true golden age, to make this the greatest time ever to be a wrestling fan. Likewise, as a business, by treating our wrestlers with respect and warmth, we also seek to make this the golden age for the performers themselves.

I urge everyone who believes in what we’re doing, or wants to believe in dreams coming true, to support AEW by spreading the word and passing the wrestling bug onto someone else.  My message: Get in on the ground floor with AEW today and help lead our movement to grow the wrestling community and ensure that the voices of the wrestling fans, their creative minds and their remarkable ideas, will always be heard.”

AEW notes: Brandi Rhodes, Double or Nothing rally

All Elite Wrestling issued a press release today announcing streaming details for next week’s Double or Nothing rally and naming Brandi Rhodes (Brandi Runnels) as the promotion’s chief brand officer.

Rhodes tweeted about her position in AEW: “I’ve dreamt of a life where I could marry my passions, combining my academic past with my entertainment future. I’m so excited to have been named Chief Brand Officer of AEW, and thrilled to continue to entertain inside and around the ring. 2019 is going to be amazing. #AEW”

The Double or Nothing rally will stream live on the Being the Elite YouTube channel, AEW’s Twitter account, Brandi Rhodes’ Instagram, and The Young Bucks’ Facebook page at 5 p.m. Eastern time next Tuesday (January 8). Double or Nothing is the sequel to All In.

The rally is taking place outside TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, which is the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars. AEW is hyping that it will feature “special guests, inside info and limited edition merchandise.” The Young Bucks, Cody & Brandi Rhodes, Hangman Page, Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, and Scorpio Sky are featured on an advertisement for the rally.

Next week’s SmackDown is taking place at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on the same day as AEW’s rally.

Cody comments on All Elite Wrestling, confirms EVP role

Cody Rhodes has issued a statement following the announcement of All Elite Wrestling.

“I feel so damn lucky. I believe that more than talent…more than chance…work ethic will guide me where i’d like to go,” he wrote on Twitter. “To be Executive Vice President for our new venture, and to be flanked by Matt and Nick and a few familiar names sharing that position; this is my dream job. I can’t think of a time when so many of wrestling’s top free agents all opted out of the road usually traveled and instead wanted to start something new. I am excited to see AEW into existence.

“What’s old isn’t new – what’s new is new. Perception isn’t reality – reality is reality. Fans first” he concluded.

The statement, which confirms Cody’s role as Executive Vice President, comes as the Elite confirmed through a video that was uploaded at midnight PST on 1/1 that All Elite Wrestling is real, and the first show under that banner will be called Double or Nothing.

There will be further announcements regarding AEW and Double or Nothing next week at a Double or Nothing rally, which will take in the parking lot in front of West Club at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. The advertisement notes that the rally will feature an announcement from The Elite,. and that there would be special guests.

All Elite Wrestling and Double or Nothing officially announced

After weeks of speculation, All Elite Wrestling is now official.

AEW was officially announced at the end of a Being the Elite episode that was uploaded at midnight Pacific time on January 1, 2019. In addition to the promotion, the episode also announced “Double or Nothing” — the sequel to All In.

The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, and Hangman Page were included in the reveal of AEW and Double or Nothing. SoCal Uncensored (Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, and Scorpio Sky) were also part of the episode.

There will be a Double or Nothing rally at TIAA Bank Field (the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars) in Jacksonville, Florida at 5 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, January 8, with more information about Double or Nothing and AEW being revealed then. The advertisement notes that the rally will include a “special announcement from The Elite.” The Young Bucks, Cody & Brandi Rhodes, Hangman Page, Daniels, Kazarian, and Sky are featured on the ad, and it says that there will be more special guests.

The rally will be free to attend and will be taking place at the parking lot in front of West Club at TIAA Bank Field. Live stream information for it will be announced soon.

AEW has been rumored since October, with trademarks for the promotion being filed in November.

As the announcement was made, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the details of AEW on Wrestling Observer Radio. Here are some notes from the episode:

– There are guys signed to the promotion, including Cody. The Young Bucks aren’t officially signed yet but could be within 24-48 hours.

– There’s no television deal for AEW yet, but there are “multiple offers out there.” Meltzer said he’s confident enough to say that he thinks it will happen.

– People are being signed to multi-year contracts.

– Tony Khan (of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham FC) is the head of the company. He’s a longtime professional wrestling fan and the son of billionaire Shahid Khan.

– What happens with AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling is “100 percent up in the air.” Everyone in All Elite would like to have a relationship with NJPW and would like to continue working with them. Whether or not NJPW will do it is up in the air.

– The success of All In wasn’t lost on certain people in the TV industry. Those who watched it were very impressed.

– Meltzer doesn’t think ROH talent will be working for AEW — they’ll be competing for the same wrestlers. Meltzer called this the greatest thing for talent since the WWF/WCW war, with WWE, AEW, and ROH now all competing for talent. They all wanted Bandido, and ROH got him.

WOR: All Elite Wrestling, Chuck vs. Tito, Creed 2, more

It’s Wrestling Observer Radio with Dave Meltzer and myself, guest co-host Garrett Gonzales. Welcome to all of our new subscribers after our Black Friday sale.

Dave and I follow up on the All Elite Wrestling trademark story, following up on what he wrote in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer. We talk about Tony Khan’s background, the Young Bucks being a major key to whether or not the project gets off the ground, how AEW is different from other wrestling startups like Global Force, TV/media rights, and whether other players are connected. I also give my thoughts on startups as I’ve been involved in a few tech startups of my own.

We then talk about Chuck vs. Tito 3, an old Death of WCW question relating to whether or not AOL/Time Warner wanted wrestling, and then give our thoughts on Creed 2 and compare it with the rest of the Rocky movie saga.

November 26, 2018 Observer Newsletter: Survivor Series review, tons more

The Survivor Series on 11/18 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was filled with unique things.

There was Ronda Rousey, who had been one of the most popular characters in the company, being booed out of the building in her home town after Charlotte Flair turned heel on her and gave her a very legitimately brutal beating with a kendo stick that left her with welts all over her body.

There was Daniel Bryan, who had just turned heel, wrestling as a babyface against Brock Lesnar, although he did try and explain that on television. Before the show when I asked about this situation, in the sense that Lesnar vs. Bryan only works with Bryan as the face selling and making comebacks, I was told that the belief is what happens on Sunday (Bryan as a face) doesn’t count and on Tuesday he reverts back to heel to continue his program with A.J. Styles.

Trademarks filed in Florida for All Elite Wrestling, All Out, and more

A slew of new trademarks filed in Jacksonville, FL, earlier this month could be a further indication of a rumored new wrestling organization launching, powered by some of the biggest non-WWE talents on the market today.

A Reddit thread brought to light that on November 5th, the following were trademarked by All Elite Wrestling, LLC, which has the same address as the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. The importance there is the Jaguars are owned by the Khan family and son Tony has been heavily rumored to backing this venture.

The names filed for trademark include:

  • All Elite Wrestling
  • AEW All Out
  • All Out
  • AEW
  • Double or Nothing
  • Tuesday Night Dynamite
  • AEW Double Or Nothing
  • Several logos including the one seen above

Under the goods and services section for the trademarks are a large amount of potential merchandise options, live streaming PPV content, and more.

Of course, the group most discussed behind this venture are Nick and Matt Jackson (The Young Bucks) and Cody Runnels, hence the references to ‘Elite’ and ‘Double or Nothing’, a reference Runnels made after the group put on their first PPV earlier this year, All In. The Jacksons, Runnels, and Kenny Omega are among those set to become free agents this January and their future with New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor has been a hot topic for months.

Chris Jericho and Jim Ross were also linked to the group, but have both downlplayed and denied any involvement.
