Jon Moxley vs. Daniel Garcia set for AEW Rampage: The First Dance

Three matches have been announced for Friday’s AEW Rampage: The First Dance.

Jon Moxley will take on Daniel Garcia. Eddie Kingston will be in Moxley’s corner, while Garcia will have 2.0 in his corner. This match was set up on tonight’s Dynamite. Moxley and Kingston made an entrance to open the show, then were attacked in the crowd by Garcia and 2.0. Darby Allin and Sting then defeated 2.0 in a tornado tag match in the Dynamite opener.

Also set for Friday, Jade Cargill will be in action, taking on Kiera Hogan. Hogan debuted against Hikaru Shida on Monday’s AEW Dark: Elevation.

Also set for Friday, Jurassic Express will take on Private Party in the first match of an AEW World Tag Team Championship eliminator tournament. The tournament will also feature The Lucha Bros and Hollywood Blonds, with their first round match announced for next week’s Dynamite. The tournament winners will get a AEW Tag Team title shot in a steel cage against The Young Bucks at All Out on Sunday, September 5.

AEW Rampage: The First Dance airs Friday at 10 p.m. Eastern time on TNT.

Here is the lineup:

  • Jon Moxley (w/Eddie Kingston) vs. Daniel Garcia (w/2.0)
  • Jade Cargill vs. Kiera Hogan
  • AEW World Tag Team Championship eliminator tournament: Jurassic Express vs. Private Party (w/Matt Hardy)

AEW sells out remaining United Center tickets in four minutes

As expected following Friday’s strong presale numbers, AEW sold out their remaining allotment of tickets for the Friday, August 20th Rampage show at Chicago’s United Center in just four minutes on Monday morning.

According to Dave Meltzer, they sold 13,600 tickets.

Tagged “The First Dance,” the show is expected to feature the debut of CM Punk — the first advertised appearance for the Chicago native on a pro wrestling show since he left WWE eight years ago. Along with the one-hour Rampage live show, it’s expected they will tape either Dark or Dark: Elevation matches that night as well.

More than 12,000 tickets were sold during Friday’s presale which put the probability of selling out the remaining tickets Monday very high.

That means two of AEW’s four Chicagoland area events in a three week stretch are sold out (All Out). That leaves the go-home Dynamite and Rampage, both at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, as the only two shows where tickets are still available.

AEW sells 12,000+ tickets for United Center Rampage show

This story was updated at 3:45 PM Eastern.

Any concerns about selling tickets for yet another AEW show in Chicago appear to have been dashed as more than 12,000 seats have been sold for the Friday, August 20th United Center show during Friday’s pre-sale.

Announced last Wednesday on Dynamite, “The First Dance” is expected to feature the debut of CM Punk, a rumor that came to life nearly ten days ago. It would be his first appearance for the Chicago native on a pro wrestling show since he left WWE eight years ago.

The August 20th pre-sale started at 11 AM Eastern and as more sections were opened up, the tickets were purchased quickly. As of this writing, approximately 100 seats remain with the rest of the tickets set to go on sale Monday.

The event is the first of four in the Chicagoland area within a three week stretch. The other three are during All Out week at the NOW Arena in nearby Hoffman Estates where Dynamite, Rampage and All Out will be held from September 1-5.

August 2, 2021 Observer Newsletter: Death of Super Porky, AEW to United Center

Jose Luis Alvarado, who started out as a well respected worker as teenager sensation Brazo de Plata, who became iconic as perhaps the greatest long-term iconic comedic wrestler as Super Porky, passed away on 7/26 at the age of 58 due to a heart attack.

He had been in poor health of late and based on what he had said both publicly and privately, seemed to know that he was not going to live much longer.

The heart attack was in its own weird way apropos. He had two prior heart attacks, both while wrestling, and worked that into his regular comedy routine where he would fake heart attacks in his matches. Given he was so overweight and his brothers were so convincing at panicking, fans bought them and on more than occasion I would get reports from people seeing him live thinking he had suffered a heart attack.

Alvarado was the best known member of the biggest wrestling family in the world, a statement that carries a lot of weight since his son, Psycho Clown, is arguably the biggest star in Mexico right now and certainly top three.
