Wrestling Observer Live: AEW Continental Classic’s final days, year in review thoughts

On a brand-new Wrestling Observer Live, let’s go through the latest in the AEW Continental Classic, shall we?

On today’s show, I dissect all that happened on Saturday’s Christmas Collision which included Ricochet and Claudio Castagnoli taking firm control of the Gold league. I didn’t love how we got there with one of them, so let’s talk about it.

Also, one Blue league match got a “this is awesome” chant while a Gold league match surprisingly didn’t. I talk about being perhaps too chained to history when it comes to certain matchups.

AEW Worlds End is coming up this Saturday and I do a quick-hit preview of some of what’s been announced.

I wrap things up with an extended look back at some of the big stories and under-the-radar developments that made 2024 another interesting year.

Mercedes Mone promo, new match added to AEW Christmas Collision

We will hear from the TBS Champion on Saturday’s AEW Christmas Collision, plus a new bout is set for the show.

AEW has announced that TBS Champion Mercedes Mone will appear on Saturday’s Collision episode for a promo. Mone retained her title with a victory over Anna Jay on Wednesday’s Dynamite, and Kris Statlander was shown watching Mone from backstage.

As she prepares to once again challenge Mone for the TBS title, Statlander will also be in action at Christmas Collision in a new match announced for the show. Statlander will take on Penelope Ford in the contest. Statlander saved Willow Nightingale from an attack at the hands of Ford and Harley Cameron on Rampage this week.

The updated card for Saturday’s AEW Christmas Collision:

  • Adam Cole/MJF face-to-face
  • Continental Classic Gold League: Darby Allin vs. Claudio Castagnoli

More Continental Classic bouts, MJF & Adam Cole face-to-face set for AEW Collision

This Saturday’s AEW Christmas Collision will now feature four total Continental Classic matches after two new bouts were announced Wednesday.

New to the lineup is Darby Allin vs. Claudio Castagnoli in Gold league action and Mark Briscoe vs. The Beast Mortos in Blue league action.

Allin picked up a massive win over Will Ospreay on Wednesday’s Holiday Bash edition of Dynamite that created a four-way tie at the top of the standings. Allin and Castagnoli are two of those who are deadlocked with six points. They have met once before with Castagnoli picking up a win last month on Dynamite.

In the Blue league, Mortos is running out of time to earn his first points as he was defeated by Shelton Benjamin Wednesday. Briscoe has six points after consecutive wins over Daniel Garcia and Kyle Fletcher. It will be a rematch from August when then-ROH World Champion Briscoe defended against Mortos.

The show will also feature a face-to-face confrontation between MJF and Adam Cole. Cole finally got a one-up on MJF Wednesday during the latter’s in-ring promo. A vide of Cole and The Undisputed Kingdom aired as if it was live, but Cole snuck up behind MJF and laid him out with a superkick.

The new additions join the previously announced Classic bouts of Ospreay vs. Ricochet and Garcia vs. Benjamin.

Here’s the current lineup for this Saturday at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City:

  • Adam Cole/MJF face-to-face
  • Continental Classic Gold league: Darby Allin vs. Claudio Castagnoli
  • Continental Classic Gold league: Will Ospreay vs. Ricochet
  • Continental Classic Blue league: Mark Briscoe vs. The Beast Mortos
  • Continental Classic Blue league: Daniel Garcia vs. Shelton Benjamin

Will Ospreay vs. Ricochet set for AEW Christmas Collision

Two Continental Classic matches are set for this weekend.

Tony Khan confirmed on Monday that Will Ospreay will meet Ricochet at the Hammerstein Ballroom for Christmas Collision this Saturday.

This will be the second time that Ospreay and Ricochet have met in AEW. In their first match back in October, The match restarted after both men pinned one another at the same time. However, Konosuke Takeshita interfered in the match soon after, causing it to be thrown out. The three ended up facing off in a triple threat match at Worlds End, with Takeshita walking away with the AEW International title.

It was also annonuced on Monday that Daniel Garcia would face Shelton Benjamin on Collision.

Ospreay and Ricochet are currently tied in the Gold League with six points along with Claudio Castagnoli. The Blue League has Garcia at 4 points and Benjamin at 3 points.

The updated lineup for this Saturday’s Collision:

  • Continental Classic Gold League: Will Ospreay vs. Ricochet
  • Continental Classic Blue League: Daniel Garcia vs. Shelton Benjamin
