The 14-year MMA career of “Filthy” Tom Lawlor has come to an end.
The emotional 38-year-old put his gloves in the cage following his unanimous decision win over Jordan Young at PFL 5 Thursday despite still being in the fourth and final playoff spot with the victory.
Lawlor, co-host of Filthy Four Daily with Bryan Alvarez on this website, leaves the sport with an 11-8-0-1 mark with no MMA titles to his name.
Known for wearing various outfits to weigh-ins and to the cage during the time when UFC allowed such things, Lawlor was the victim of a two-year suspension from USADA in late-2016 for failing for Ostarine. He denied ever knowingly taking the drug, but any appeals and release requests so he could fight elsewhere were denied.
The UFC then released him less than two months before his suspension was up. Following a 2019 Ostarine violation by another fighter that resulted in a much shorter suspension, USADA admitted that if the case came up later, Lawlor’s punishment wouldn’t have been as long.
After becoming a three-time National Collegiate Wrestling Association champion at the University of Central Florida, Lawlor’s fighting career started in March 2007 and after six fights, he got an opportunity to be on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter (Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira). As part of Team Mir at light heavyweight, he lost in his first fight to Ryan Bader via first round knockout.
During his 6-5 run at middleweight, he picked up wins over Patrick Cote, CB Dollaway and Gian Villante while losing to eventual middleweight champion Chris Weidman and Corey Anderson.
After losing to Deron Winn on the undercard of the Oscar De La Hoya-promoted Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell III show, he signed with PFL. He had lost his debut against Antonio Carlos Junior (aka “Shoeface”) before Thursday’s win.
Lawlor resumed his pro wrestling career in 2014 and has already made a name for himself with his run in MLW (World Champion, Opera Cup winner, Battle Riot winner) and New Japan Pro Wrestling where he is the first-ever Strong Openweight Champion. He also frequently works for various indie promotions.
.@FilthyTomLawlor removes his gloves and places them at the center of the cage — despite currently sitting in fourth place in the 2021 PFL Light Heavyweight standings, which would qualify him for the Playoffs. Keep an eye on this situation as it develops. #2021PFL5

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE
Garrett Gonzales and I are doing a show tonight on Brian Pillman, coming off last night’s Dark Side of the Ring episode. Kim Wood will be our guest and we are taking listener questions on Pillman for tonight to be sent to [email protected]. Bryan and I will be back tomorrow night talking about the fallout of Blood & Guts, UFC, Bellator and more.
Regarding the two New Japan stadium shows in May that have been postponed due to the state of emergency in Japan, the plan is to run both the Yokohama Arena and Tokyo Dome shows later this year when things are better. It’s also been noted that if the state of emergency is extended past 5/31, that Dominion, on 6/6, would be in jeopardy of taking place as scheduled. More notably, we are getting far too close for comfort for the Olympics in Tokyo in August. There are good and bad things about Japanese culture but they are generally not into vaccinations like American culture and right now that is not a good thing.
The AEW numbers for Wednesday were phenomenal considering it was Cinco de Mayo and their main audience is males 18-49. It was the first time AEW in its history ever finished first in cable, and not only did it beat everything in cable in the key demo but also beat both CBS and NBC programming head-to-head. The current issue goes deep into what the numbers mean and what they would have done on a more normal Wednesday.
Smackdown tonight is the Retro show featuring Seth Rollins vs. Cesaro. 205 Live tonight features the debut of Ikkeman Jiro (Jiro Kuroshio) & August Gray vs. Tony Nese & Ariya Daivari and the debut of Ari Sterling (Alex Zayne) vs. Samir Singh.

The Phillipe Lins vs. Ben Rothwell heavyweight fight is off because Lins wasn’t medically cleared to compete. Ryan Benoit weighed 129, missing weight by three pounds, but he could barely stand up on the scale and his fight with Zarrukh Adashev was canceled. He needed help just to step onto the scale.

Arena Mexico will be allowed to open up to 500 fan shows starting on 5/17 so it appears the 5/28 PPV show will be its first with fans.

Triller — the promoters of last year’s successful Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. boxing exhibition and this Saturday’s Ben Askren vs. Jake Paul boxing match — has acquired FITE.tv.
FITE.tv is known for being a primary location for pay-per-view wrestling, MMA and boxing events worldwide in addition to both live concerts and soccer. A press release for the announcement revealed FITE has four million registrants, over 10 million users, and more than 5000 streamed live shows over the last five years.
FITE will be the exclusive distributor of all Triller Fight Club shows starting this Saturday. Following the success of the Jones-Tyson event which the two companies partnered on, Triller announced a deal with Snoop Dogg for “The Fight Club,” a series that will run five-to-eight times a year, mixing boxing with entertainment.
Parent company TrillerNet has been on an acquisition run, acquiring a live music streaming platform (Verzuz) last month. The release mentions they will continue to invest in “new lifestyle and entertainment programming” with FITE helping to “greatly expanding the reach of Triller’s fast-growing AI-powered content and distribution ecosystem.”
It’s unknown how, or even if, this will affect their streaming deals with AEW, Impact Wrestling, GCW or any of their current partners.
Based in both New York and Bulgaria, FITE launched in May 2012.
In one of the strangest occurrences in combat sports history, a fighter’s finger temporarily disappeared during a Thursday night CFFC event.
In the co-main event, Khetag Pliev was taking on Devin Goodale in a middleweight clash when between the second and third round, Pliev and his corner noticed his left ring finger simply wasn’t there. If that wasn’t bizarre enough of a scenario, the ring announcer later asked fans in the arena to look for the finger as it was missing.
Shortly thereafter, Pliev’s finger was found bent back into his glove as it didn’t actually fall off. However, it needed to be reattached as he suffered a severe dislocation. He underwent surgery last night to reattach the finger and is expected to return to action.
A later examination of the fight showed the injury was due to a kick that caught Pliev’s hand just right.
Goodale won the fight by second round TKO.

Legendary MMA heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko said in a Thursday Instagram post that he is hospitalized with COVID-19.
RT Sport reported that the 44-year-old is at a medical facility that specializes in treating those with the coronavirus. Russia’s state-owned news agency RIA Novosti first reported Emelianenko’s health status but there is no news on how he got it or his current physical state.
On the post, he said (translated), “Thank you all who are sincerely worried about my health. I am feeling well now, I am on the mend. I am grateful to the doctors and medical staff for their care and your hard work.”
Emelianenko last competed in December 2019 as part of Bellator’s debut in Japan, defeating Quinton “Rampage” Jackson by TKO in the first round. He signed a new multi-fight deal with the company in the summer of 2019 and is 3-2 overall since making his promotional debut in 2017.
Even though 2020 is a year to forget, there was still plenty in MMA that is worth looking back on — some good, some bad, and some that still leaves us scratching our heads.

In a surprise move, former UFC strawweight and once hopeful WWE signee Paige VanZant is leaving MMA for a career in bare knuckle fighting instead.
First reported by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, VanZant has signed a exclusive four fight deal with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), turning down a contract offer from front runner and once expected future home, Bellator MMA, where her husband currently fights.
Helwani reported the deal is worth more than $1 million over the life of the deal and also includes incentives.
The 26-year-old lost the final fight on her UFC contract in July and had spoken prior to the fight about wanting to test free agency with Dana White suggesting that would be a good idea. She was 5-4 over nearly six years in the Octagon, fighting just three times since 2017 due to repeated injuries.
During her 13 fight career, she has just two wins by KO or TKO.
VanZant had been linked to WWE in the past, telling TMZ in 2018 she was “definitely interested” in going there, saying she loved it and had the personality for it. She also reportedly was discussing a SummerSlam appearance with the company in 2016.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) has rescheduled its next season.
“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Professional Fighters League has rescheduled our upcoming 2020 season for Spring 2021,” PFL CEO Pete Murray announced today. “PFL is a global MMA league with athletes from over 25 countries, and our decision is guided by the health and safety of our fighters, fans, partners, and event personnel.”
This was set to be the PFL’s third season. The promotion was formerly known as World Series of Fighting.
“The PFL mission is to evolve and grow the sport of MMA, and we look forward to staging our unique sport-season format with Regular Season, Playoff and Championship events on ESPN platforms next year. PFL has always been focused on delivering the best made-for-TV MMA product and we will continue to deliver the most innovative fight experience going forward. Fans can also look forward to PFL elevating our roster with new championship caliber fighter signings such as Rory MacDonald,” Murray said.
“For the remainder of 2020, the PFL will support our fighters with a monthly cash stipend to help provide some relief during these challenging times. In addition, for sports fans who we know are looking for compelling content, the PFL will deliver new original programming across ESPN and PFL platforms.”
This year’s season was supposed to begin in May and conclude in December. The PFL had previously announced in March that they were delaying the start of the season and would begin when it was feasible to do so.

When it comes to MMA, the beleaguered Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has had quite a month, beginning with UFC 247 which featured several bizarre decisions including a major conflict of interest where a judge trained with one of the fighters he was judging.
On Wednesday, it continued as MMA Junkie reported that Tito Ortiz’s lopsided win over Alberto El Patron at December’s Combate Americas PPV has been changed into a no decision. Junkie got a quote from a state official which said the result was changed “pending further investigation.”
Junkie also reported that the promotion was made aware of the change Tuesday, but they were unable to offer any further information. As of now, neither Combate CEO Campbell McLaren, Ortiz, or El Patron have commented publicly.
Because Ortiz won that night in Hidalgo, the result being changed likely means the issue is with him and not the former WWE star. However, the official gave no details as to what the investigation is regarding and who.
It was the first MMA fight for the former Alberto Del Rio since 2010 while Ortiz had fought the year prior against Chuck Liddell for Oscar De La Hoya’s failed MMA promotion.

The XFL has gotten mostly strong word of mouth. It is said that they’ve already sold in advance more tickets for this season than the AAF did during its season. On sports radio that I was listening to last night, they were talking about it with the results on the news breaks and such. The Houston team opened up the second deck of TDECU Stadium for walkup and New York and Dallas both drew in excess of 17,000 announced. Elevate Sports Ventures, according to business newsletter John Wallstreet, built out teams sales staff and they were selling tickets for six months before the season started. They will not come close to the attendance of the 2001 league, but everything is different now. The XFL was projecting 15,000 to 20,000 per game this season with Seattle and St. Louis maybe topping that as each team has sold more than 10,000 season tickets..
