WWE live event results, Los Angeles, CA: Styles vs. Reigns vs. Rollins for the WWE Title

By Ben Bartlett

Byron Saxton was the host for the night.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Cesaro.

Big pop for Cesaro. Great match with back and forth action. Del Rio won with neutralizer.

Lucha Dragons vs. The Club.

Good match. Anderson in for most of the match. Club won with the Magic Killer.

Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler.

Pretty boring slow match. Corbin won with end of days.

Summer Rae & Eva Marie & Dana Brooke & Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks & Natalya & Paige & Becky Lynch.

Fun match everyone got some time in the ring. Some “You can’t wrestle” chants for Eva. Banks Statement on Dana for the win.

Ambrose vs Jericho in a Los Angeles Street Fight.

Great heel work from Jericho before the match. A little slow but all around a good match. Ended with Jericho going for a chair shot and being thrown into a table in the corner. Dirty Deeds for the win from Ambrose.

Rusev vs. Titus O’Neil: US Title.

Basically a squash match.  Rusev retained in a very short match.  Rusev attacked Titus before the bell and Titus never got back in it. Super kick for the win. Odd match.

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn.

Big pop for both of them.  Fun match where both got their offense in. Helluva Kick for the win for Zayn.

AJ Styles vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns: WWE Title.

Big pops for all of them but Rollins pop was huge. Fantastic match. Rollins and AJ shook hands at the beginning and teamed up on Reigns for most of the match. Rollins went for the pin behind AJs back and then they fought. Spear on AJ for the win. Match of the night by far.

WWE live event results, La Crosse, WI: Baron Corbin pins Cesaro

By Lenny Bakken

Byron Saxon was the host, ring announcer and bell ringer.

1. Kane & Big Show defeated Eric Rowan & Braun Strowman clean pinfall.

2. Sasha Banks defeated Summer Rae with the bank statement.

3. Baron Corbin defeated Cesaro via pinfall.

4. Rusev w/Lana defeated Sin Cara with the camel clutch.

5. Paige & Becky Lynch defeated Lana & Dana Brooks.

6. Vaudevillians vs. Shining Stars vs. New Day in an elimination match:  Vaudevillians first to be eliminated by Shining Stars and then New Day defeated Shining Stars.

7. Alberto Del Rio vs. Dean Ambrose:  Dean Ambrose won via pinfall.

Best spots of the night were in the Ambrose match also. (Dean superplexed ADR off the top rope. Also Dean flew threw the middle ropes onto ADR on the floor.)

Overall a very entertaining show and the crowd seemed very pleased with the talent’s efforts.

WWE results, Glasgow: Roman Reigns vs. Sheamus

By Eoin Chyene

Thanks also to Innes McVey

Cesaro beat Stardust in the opening contest. Stardust hissed at a kid in the audience. Cesaro mocked Stardust’s thinking pose. 25-26 rotations of
the Swing, which they had teased a couple times beforehand. Cesaro applied the sharpshooter after that for the win.

Zack Ryder and Darren Young beat Social Outcasts (Heath Slater and Bo Dallas). Pre match promo from Social Outcasts about how lucky we were to be in their presence. Slater was great when he was on the outside recovering. He told us he was going in to make the save before he did it, and surprised a kid by actually following through with a high five. Rough Ryder for the win in this one.

Rusev beat Swagger with the Accolade. Eye poke to gain the advantage, kick to the head and done. Both guys had flags. All American American Jack Swagger had… The Scottish saltire flag. “We The People” was an over chant whenever he went for it.

New Day beat Dudleys and Usos in a match for the tag titles. Big Ending for the win. Running joke in this match was Xavier getting his back slapped all the time. First one was by an Uso, and Xavier oversold it for a while. Big E was telling him not to cry. Usos then slapped Xavier in tandem. Xavier is upset and dejectedly walks over to his corner to tag in Big E. Usos and Big E then accidentally slap Xavier on the apron. He decided to leave, Bubba chased him on the ramp, slapped his back and returned him to the ring. Great match, crowd loved it.

After intermission, Sin Cara beat Tyler Breeze. Lucha chant was very popular. Senton from the top rope for the win.

Charlotte beat Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch for the women’s championship. All three of these women were total stars. My last live event was in 2012, and the difference in class between those ladies compared to the 2016 trio is ridiculous. Super fun match, Ric Flair removed Sasha from the ring and Charlotte rolled up Becky for the win. Feet were on the ropes too. Charlotte asked Charles Robinson “what am I paying you for?” After a kickout earlier in the match, that got a few laughs ringside.

Main event was Roman Reigns vs Sheamus. Not much more exciting than it sounds on paper. Reigns’ merch was fairly popular so I was expecting heavy cheers. Honestly, it was probably nearer 50/50. The boos were quite loud in my area despite being surrounded by Reigns gloves and t-shirts. He had more fan signs than anyone else too. Sheamus got on the mic before the match and said Scotland was the weaker, more immature brother of Ireland and mocked us for voting against our own independence. He said he’s been told many times that he looks stupid, but that we were the ones who really looked stupid after that. Worth noting that Glasgow was one of the areas that voted yes to independence. Reigns won with the spear and had previously kicked out after a Brogue Kick.

Some general notes: New Day were probably the most represented in terms of merch at the show, followed by Reigns, Ambrose and Cena. Cesaro shirts were his old ones, signed by the man himself. They only had large sizes of them left for this show. Some really long lines at the various merch stands, even after the show had finished. The only thing they had a surplus of before I left were the empty New Day BootyOs boxes. Horns had sold out.

Jojo and Greg Hamilton co-hosted, and told us that WWE was coming back in November… For Smackdown. Promo video said tickets went on sale at 9pm, which is when the intermission was due to end. They’d actually went on sale at 9am. They waited until before the main event to announce that RAW was also coming to Glasgow, and played it out like that was a shocking new announcement. Considering most tickets are gone for that one, probably not a surprise to the people in attendance.

WWE Dublin, Ireland, live results (Thursday): Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns

Submitted by Manus Cronin

– Sin Cara beat Stardust with a top rope senton

Kids were into chanting ‘Lucha’ and not much else. Decent match with no heat whatsoever beyond ‘Lucha’ chants.

– Darren Young & Zack Ryder beat the Social Outcasts (Slater & Dallas)

Ryder pinned Bo with the rough Ryder. Comedy tag match. Basic and short.

– Cesaro beat Rusev

This was a long match Cesaro won after a 10 rep swing and a sharpshooter. Lot of power moves as one would expect. Cesaro worked over Rusev’s leg Bret Hart style to set up for the sharpshooter. Probably the best match on the show.

– WWE Tag Team Champions New Day beat Dudleys & Usos in a triple threat tag match to retain

End came when the Dudleys hit a 3D and Xavier stole the pin. New Day and Dudleys were super over initially. Dudleys did the whole tease the table and don’t deliver gimmick to get heat. Usos were booed surprisingly.

> During the interval, Jo Jo and generic announcer were hyping the rest of the card. Massive boos at the mere mention of Roman Reigns which was contrary to what I expected but it might simply have been a reaction to the fact that he was facing Sheamus later and he is the home town guy.

– Jack Swagger beat Tyler Breeze with the ankle lock in a short match

Neither guy was particularly over save for when Tyler did ‘the worm’. That got a babyface pop. A dad who had brought his kids that was sitting behind me asked ‘Is that Scotty 2 Hotty?’ which may be an indictment on the degree to which older fans are keeping up to date with the product today.

– WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte (w/ Ric Flair) def. Becky Lynch vs Sasha Banks to retain

Charlotte pinned Lynch with a rollup after a long match. Becky was over like crazy as the hometown girl. I was amazed that there was barely any pop for Flair but they didn’t announce him so that was probably a factor. Decent match but I had hoped for better. Lots of athletic spots from Charlotte (she really is a step above as far as being an athlete goes). Finish was Becky had Sasha in the disarmer, Ric grabbed Sasha, pulled her out of the ring and Charlotte rolled up Becky.

– WWE Champion Roman Reigns def. Sheamus

Sheamus came out first to huge cheers. Roman came out to THUNDEROUS boos. I have no idea why they booked Roman against Sheamus in Dublin. It was guaranteed that he would not be cheered against the local boy (there was an audible ‘You’re from Cabra’ chant at one point during the match). Sheamus did a LONG promo trying to make himself the heel. He insulted the crowd over a myriad of things, including the fact that we haven’t had a government for 7 weeks (this actually got a few cheers).

Eventually after a solid 5-7 minutes of Sheamus trying to make himself the heel, the crowd cottoned on and started to boo him but their heart wasn’t really in it. All it served to do was make the match a complete damp squib. A steady stream of people started to leave at about the 2 minute mark (which I’ve never seen at a WWE live event in Dublin before). The remaining crowd wasn’t really into either guy. I have no idea why they couldn’t just let Sheamus work babyface in Dublin. The crowd wanted to cheer him anyway and at least if they’d booked it that way, the match might have had some heat rather than a mass exodus of bored parents and children.

WWE results, Brussels: Dean Ambrose pins Triple H again

By Jurgen De Roover

10-15 minutes before the matches started, Byron Saxton came out so people could vote on twitter which match they wanted to see a short version of from WM32. Taker vs Shane was voted on in favor over Ambrose vs Lesnar & Reigns vs Triple H. (in that order)

1) The opening match was for the IC title. Miz came out with Maryse to some good heat. They got some good heat and both played heels very well throughout the match. Dolph Ziggler came out as the challenger. This was a good match which was perfect to open the show. Miz got the win by Skull Crushing Finale after a distraction by Maryse. Miz wanted to attack Dolph with the belt after the match but he ducked and gave him the Zig Zag to end this.

2) A very short match between Del Rio and Sandow. Sandow was over with the crowd and only had to stick a finger up to get cheers while Del Rio got some good heat. Del Rio won with the cross armbreaker.

3) Del Rio asked if there was anyone in the back who was man enough to face him. Fandango came out with people doing his dance. Fandango won via Roll-up after a short match.

4) Kevin Owens came out to a good pop to face Sami Zayn who was cheered on by the crowd too. Fun match with Owens mocking Zayn’s dance with his hat on too. It was a bit shorter than I expected and hoped because I mostly went for these guys & AJ. Sami won with the blue thunder bomb.

5) 8 man women’s match: Naomi, Tamina, Lana & Summer Rae vs Natalya, Alicia Fox, Eva Marie & Paige.  Big pop for paige. Good pop for Natalya. Boo’s for Eva. Couple of Lana chants too. Eva portraited her heel character though being on the face team. Paige got the hot tag in the end and won with the Rampaige on Tamina.

6) Chris Jericho vs AJ Styles.  GREAT heel work by Jericho throughout. Lots and lots of AJ Styles chants. (It was maybe a coincidence with who I was standing at the merchandise stand, but it seemed like AJ easily sold the most shirts. Though I’m not sure how correct that information is.) A good match with AJ winning by Styles clash.

7) Curtis Axel (w/ Victor) vs Goldust.  Goldust won via rollup after a quick match. Got attacked after the match and Truth came out for the save. Some fun what’s up chants by both. Golden Truth chants too.

8) US Title match: Kalisto vs Ryback. Good david vs goliath match. The whole crowd did the “Lucha Lucha” chant a lot. Kalisto reversed Shell Shocked twice and won via Solida Del Sol.

9) Rowan & Stroman vs Big Show & Kane. Big Show got possibly the loudest pop of the night. It was an amazing sight seeing Stroman and Big Show face to face. You really don’t realise how big they are until you see it live. The win came when Kane sent Stroman over the top, Big Show chokeslammed Rowan for the 1-2-3. Stroman came in to attack after and received a double chokeslam for good measure. Nice to see the veterans get much respect from the crowd.

10) Dean Ambrose vs Triple H.  Big pops for both of them. Mixed crowd with mostly boo’s for Triple H though there were a lot of “Let’s go Ambrose – Triple H!” chants. The
crowd really appriciated Triple H being there. Funny segment where Triple H poked Dean in the eyes behind the ref and then Dean just did it back three times in front of the ref and was like “whaaaat?”.
Dean reversed the pedigree a couple of times. Triple H pulled the ref in the corner so he took a hit instead of himself. Triple H with a low blow to Ambrose. Pedigree reversed, low blow by Ambrose and then dirty deeds to get the win.

Overall, very enjoyable show with all the heels doing great heel work. The crowd was into it from start until finish and the biggest pops were for Big Show, Kevin Owens, Paige & the main event.

WWE house show results Belfast: Reigns vs. Sheamus

By James Stevenson

Good show overall. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid wrestling from start to finish. Quiet enough crowd, but it always is. Lots of young kids in the crowd.

Cesaro vs Stardust- good match. Cesaro won after a swing and made him submit to the Sharpshooter.

Ryder and Young vs Social Outcasts (Slater and Bo) Outcasts cut a promo calling the town garbage, the usual. Crowd was very into Ryder, who pinned Slater with the Rough Ryder.

Rusev vs Swagger. Okay, quite long. Rusev made Swagger tap to the Accolade.

New Day vs Dudleys vs Usos. Crowd was super into the Usos. No Kofi, heard Xavier say he had to go home. Very good match, Xavier pinned Bubba after blind tagging an Uso who had hit him with the Superfly splash.

Sin Cara vs Tyler Breeze. My second favourite match on the card. The Lucha chant was over, and the crowd got into the match, which i enjoyed. Sin Cara won with the Senton.

Charlotte vs Becky vs Sasha. This was match of the night. Crowd loved Sasha and Becky. Ric was over and Charlotte was over as a heel, even though they woo’ed when she woo’ed. Woo will never be a heel thing to do. Anyway, Ric with shenanigans, pulled Sasha out of the ring while she was in the Disarm-her, Charlotte rolled up Becky with feet on the ropes.

Reigns vs Sheamus. Sheamus talked about Northern Ireland and Ireland being different countries and insulted us for being British. Reaction to Roman wasn’t as bad as i thought it’d be, but there were a lot of kids there. Back and forth match, decent action. Crowd popped huge when Roman won.

WWE house show results, Newcastle, England: AMBROSE PINS HHH

Match 1- Ziggler vs Miz ( with Maryse) for the IC Title.

Both were over huge, with Ziggler getting a lot of chants. Miz is so good at heeling it up in front of a crowd and Maryse only help that fact. Miz won in 10 minutes after Maryse got involved, but Ziggler hit a ZigZag after to get his own back.

Match 2- Del Rio vs Sandow

A squash with Del Rio winning in 3 minutes with a Armbreaker. Poor Sandow

Afterwards, Del Rio got on the mic and said that ge hated Newcastle and challeneged anyone in the back to a match.

Match 3- Del Rio vs Fandango

A strange match. I don’t think anyone thought Fandango would come out to accept. Del Rio taunted the fans for liking Fandango. Fandango ending up winning with a roll up in about 1 minute.

Match 4- Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens Wwe Newcastle- Robert Coll

A great match with Sami getting alot of ” OLE” chants and Owens getting on the mic to say he is going to leave if they continue. A lot of great heel work from Owens, attacking Zayn before the bell and trying to walkout for the count out. Zayn won with the Helluva kick in about 10 min. A good match as expected

Match 5- Divas 8 man tag.

Me and my brother went to get a beer at this point but we came back to see Paige pin Tamina with a rampaige in about 12 minutes. Paige got a great reaction when she came out and i will say that Eva Marie is stunning in person. I can see why Vince may want to push her as the face of the divison, despite her flaws.

Match 6- Jericho vs Styles

Jericho came out to a good pop, before getting boos for slagging of the city and the Aj Styles chants. Aj came out to the biggest reaction of the evening untill the main event. I was surprised bby how many kids loved him. They kept doing his poses so he is over as babyface for sure.

Great match, Styles is smooth in his wrestling and Jericho is so good at the little things. Styles won with a Styles clash in 15 minutes.

Intermission

Match 7- Axel vs Goldust

We came back to see Axel and Viktor cutting a promo, with Axel saying that Viktor is now a member of the Social Outcast

A basic match with Goldust winning in 5 minutes. The outcasts attacked after, before R-Truth ran out for the save and a dance.

Match 8- Kalisto vs Ryback for the Us Title.

The Lucha chants were very over, and i saw a lot of kids with Kalisto mask so it seems Kalisto has some upper traction.

A basic match, not to different form their Mania match ( Although this properly has a bigger crowd) With Kalisto winning in 8 minutes.

Match 9- Big Show and Kane vs The Wyatts

This.was.boring. I was happy to see Kane and Big show live as they were two of my favourite from when i was a kid, but this match was so slow. The crowd kept themselves entertained with Enzo and New Day chants and i can’t blame them .It went 15 minutes which was too long. Big Show and Kane won with a double chokeslam on Rowan in 15 minutes.

Match 10- Triple H vs Dean Ambrose

Triple H came out to a great reaction but Ambrose was pop of the night. The kids near me were going crazy when he came out. A basic, safe match but good none the less. The best spot was Ambrose doing his dive on to Triple H and ending up going into the crowd, which didn’t look planned. Ambrose won in 15 minutes after hitting a low blow and dirty deeds.

House of Hardcore results: Rhino vs Rob Van Dam, Balls Mahoney tribute

The show kicks off with the roster around the ring, along with some original ECW talent, such as Tommy Dreamer, RVD,Rhino, and Shane Douglas in the ring. They pay their respects to Balls Mahoney. They play “Big Balls” and the crowd sings along.

SoCal Val is your ring announcer and host for the night. She brings out Ricky Steamboat. Ricky puts over the ECW Arena and its fans. Vik Dalishus comes out and gets a ton of heat for thinking the opening ceremony was for Ricky. Vik tried to clothesline Ricky but Ricky fights back and chops him a lot.

… And we have finally have a match… a ladies match! Jade defeated Thea Trinidad with a package piledriver in about 10 minutes. Jade was the heel here.

Action Ortiz and Vik Dalishus are out. Vik says he doesn’t want to fight after getting assaulted by Ricky Steamboat, so Eddie Kingston comes out as a replacement. Their opponents are Team Tremendous. Lots of flips and dives from Team Tremendous here. Team Tremendous get the win the super blockbuster or whatever it’s called on Action Ortiz.

Billy Gunn vs Bull Dempsey is out next. Crowd is split 50/50 on this one. Billy won with the Fameasser in around 6 minutes. Billy takes the mic after and puts over Bull and the WWE Performance Center.. until they are assaulted by… Kevin Thorn?!?! Kevin beats them down until XPac makes the save. XPac does his kicks and gives Kevin a bronco buster, giving a nose bleed. Bull, Billy, and XPac all do the suck it taunt.

Tony Nese defeated Alex Reynolds and Chris Dickinson in a three way dance. Tony first eliminated Alex and then Chris a few minutes later. This was a strong contender for match of the night.

Pepper Parks and Cherry Bomb are out. Cherry introduces her new bodyguard, who I didn’t catch the name of. Tommy Dreamer comes out to a big pop. Cherry tries to interfere midway through the match, so Tommy brings out Mickie James! Mickie takes out Cherry. Pepper Parks gets the win a few minutes later with his feet on the ropes.

Intermission. 3 matches left. First half was awesome!

Brian Cage defeated Sami Callihan. Sami Callihan was more over, probably because this is CZW territory. Brian Cage wins after multiple buckle bombs and then his finisher. Match of the night.

The Killer Elite Squad defeated Chris Hero & Colt Cabana to retain the GHC Tag Team Championships. Chris and Colt were very over, and no one cared about KES. KES retained after pinning Hero with their tag finisher.

Main event time, Rhino vs Rob Van Dam. Rhino out first to a big pop. Next is Rob Van Dam who comes out to A HUGE POP, with the whole crowd singing “Walk” by Pantera. Dueling “VOTE FOR RHINO / WHOLE FUCKIN SHOW!” chants. RVD won after putting Rhino through a table and then hitting the 5 Star Frog Splash. They shook hands after… and then Enter Sandman hits! Crowd sings along as Sandman hosts a beer bash with the audience, RVD, Rhino, and Tommy Dreamer. Rhino cuts a promo saying he loves playing heel and says sorry to a fan he shoved earlier.

Tommy gets on the mic and says that House of Hardcore will be hosting shows on a monthly basis and they will be returning to the 2300 in September. Sandman puts a beer in the center of the ring for Balls Mahoney. Big Balls plays through the arena and everyone goes home happy.

Great show, a lot better than what I was expecting.

MysterioMania results: Bobby Lashley & Rey Mysterio vs MVP & Ricky Banderas

Preshow: Engranaje Jack defeats Límite with a roll up while he has the legs in ropes. Both are local wrestlers. It was fine.

Hugo does a promo, thanks the crowd and says the event is possible because two guys from Antofagasta (city of the north of Chile) contacted him.

Santana Garrett defeats Taya with a small package for became the first women’s champion in Wrestling SuperStar. Good match. Taya was heel and was with a wrestler of Argentina for gain heat.

Robbie E makes a promo saying that he is Mister Saco Wea (is a chilean way to say some like bag of rocks). He is super over. Robbie has to participate in a 20 man battle royal with chileanwrestlers for a cup. The winner was Twiggy eliminating last Robbie E. Mister Saco Wea was almost the whole match out of the ring making a really fun show. The winner of cup can cash it for a chance for the Chile’s Championshisp. It was fine, but some long.

Gladiator Angel and HellSpawn (both from Chile) defeats the tag team champions, Eddie Edwards and Pentagón Jr. when Angel pinned Edwards after a death valley driver of HellSpawn and a diving splash. Pentagón was the replace of Davey Richards. Pentagón hits really hard and they make much better work than the chileans.

Apocalipsis defeats León Apolo when Apolo take out the mask of Apocalipsis and retain the LCW Championshisp. Worst match of the night. Boring match.

They announced next show on August 7 with Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, Ivelisse, Drago, Mr. Anderson, Mr. 450 and others. The crowd is very happy with the announce, in special with Jeff Hardy.

Alex Hero vs Carlito ended in doble count out. Carlito was over and the chilean Hero was booed. Hero is tiny and the crowd don’t bought his attacks. Second worst match. Twiggy appears with the cup, but challenges Hero for August.

Konnan appears and Hugo give an award for his career. Very short segment.

Matt Hardy defeats Johnny Mundo with Twist of Fate. Moments before the referee was knocked and can’t make the count for Mundo, when he applies the End of the World. Hardy invites his wife and son to ring. It was good, but they can do some much better.

In main event Bobby Lashley and Rey Mysterio defeats MVP and Ricky Banderas. Mysterio hits the 619 in the heels and a splash in Banderas, meanwhile Lashley uses the Spear on MVP. MVP was a good heel. Mysterio was super over.

It was an ok show, but nothing outstanding happens in the matches. The booking was so-so, Hugo has to improve in that. The crowd was very active, big pops for Robbie E, Carlito, Hardy and Mysterio.

WWE WrestleMania 32 Fan Feedback

Hey Dave,

Thumbs: Down

Best: Sasha/Becky/Charlotte

Worst: Triple H/Reigns

Well, where do I start? Six hours is definitely way too long for a WWE show – even if some of the questionable, odds-defying booking choices were ignored. Zack Ryder new IC champ after years of being forgotten? Charlotte retaining when they’re rebranding the Womens’ division? Building up a historic angle for WrestleMania, to end with… Undertaker winning and not even a hint of “what happens next”?

The main event was interminable – this show did not need to be five hours long (well, seven if you count the pre-show). So many questionable booking decisions, and countless examples of the company damn near killing their full time guys at the expense of a pop for the returning stars. As good as Austin, Foley, Rock and Michaels are, they’re not going to be full-time again, and WWE badly hurt a good chunk of their roster to get “WrestleMania Moments”.

Thank God this show was only $9.99 on the Network – if I’d paid anything close to standard PPV prices, I’d be angry and tired, as opposed to just tired right now.

How can this be the same company that produced a blow-away show like NXT on Friday night? It’s almost like the people in charge of the main show are stuck in a timewarp, and are hell bent on alienating their hardcore fan base. 101,763 of them (by their count) are very likely to be counting themselves amongst the newly-alienated, going by the reactions to that main event.

I’m not going to go overboard and say “Cancel WWE Network” or anything like that, but for a company that was able to give themselves a shot in the arm tonight, they’ve just ensured that their course remains set for the toilet.

Best match: Charlotte/Sasha/Becky

Worst match: Battle Royal

Random comments: It amazes me that even with the non-existent hype and occasionally insultingly stupid storylines that WWE can almost always pull it together at WrestleMania time and put together a great show. I watched the entire 6+ hours and never got bored… I could see a case being made for match of the night for the Woman’s Title match, IC ladder match, Ambrose/Lesnar and even the Hell in a Cell match… Only big criticism: HHH/Reigns shouldn’t have gone on last. It was a flat end to an otherwise very entertaining show.

Best Match: Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

Worst Match: Diva’s 10 Woman Tag

An okay wrestling show marred by horrible booking decisions up and down the card. The show started off great, with an excellent ladder match, a callback to Steen vs. Generico that we all wanted to see, and a legitimate feel good moment in Ryder winning, then it fell off a cliff like no show ever has before. We’ve all been saying for years how they need to start pushing new people and freshening up the product as a whole, and there was a real opportunity to do just that tonight, and it was squandered at an almost embarrassing level.

A.J. Styles was not helped, The New Day and Wyatt Family were arguably buried, and what should have been a star making performance for Dean Ambrose was a complete dud. Not letting Sasha Banks run with the ball when it is clear how incredibly over she was is also nothing short of baffling.

By far the most disappointing thing on the entire show was the Ambrose vs. Brock match. Not only did Dean not win, but the match was a completely bland, and came off to me as nothing but a glorified squash. Considering who was in this match and the stage that it was contested on, I was expecting much more. More big spots, a more competitive battle, and more violence. What a waste of both guys.

And the Reigns winning clean need not be commented on. Everything that can and should be said has already been. I also have to say, the six and a half hour runtime for this show was absolutely brutal. It was an experiment that shouldn’t be tried again.

So basically what the show boils down to is that nobody got over and nothing changes. At least we’ll always have the Shane McMahon dive.

Best Match: Women’s Three Way
Worst Match: Reigns vs HHH

A terrible show that went on forever. Andre Battle Royal was boring. Shane vs Taker was bad and boring with one spot of note that went for thirty minutes. Ambrose vs Lesnar was a huge disappointment.

Zack Ryder winning was the emotional high point, I guess? The Rock vs Erick Rowan might have been the fourth best match on the show.

Fred Morlan

Good:

-the women’s title match: they feel like the only thing from this show besides Baron Corbin, Zack Ryder, and Sami Zayn that were elevated in a positive way, Match of the Night definitely

-the ladder match: spotfests for the sake of spotfests are not my thing, but they did it well; Zayn and Owens both felt like the 2 biggest stars in the match, Ryder winning the match is a shock in a nice way but feels 4 years too late. Does WWE feel so bad about him tag teaming with Mojo Rawley in NXT they gave him this?

Bad:

-Styles-Jericho: the match just wasn’t that awesome thing. I don’t get Jericho winning if he’s leaving in a couple months like he always does unless he’s going to be in a title match with Reigns pre-Summerslam . The finish from the camera angle just looked botched like Jericho never even touched Styles as he came off the top rope.

-New Day-League of Nations: dead crowd, was hard to care

-Battle Royal: not really bad, just it’s a battle royal, it’s late in the show, and 2 of your last 4 guys are Darren Young and Bo Dallas it’s hard to feel excited; Shaq was a neat surprise; I guess Fandango and Damien Sandow are getting future endeavored soon, nice to see the match buildup a new guy at least in Corbin

Ugly:

-Lesnar-Ambrose: one wrestler in this match used only his hands, power, and technique to wrestle, refusing to ever use any of the weapons laying around. The other wrestler could only do offense with the aid of weapons and cheap tricks, including trying a chainsaw to attempt dismemberment I guess. So, which one was the babyface? This match was so psychologically screwed up. Lesnar was the babyface from how they booked it. Ambrose is down in the midcard now, or maybe a Jericho feud.

-Undertaker-Shane: the Undertaker match at Mania has become a cliche, and this match reviled in them. Shane’s “come at me” hands is a ripoff of Michaels’ throatslash on his knees. The match itself was bad pre-Huge Spot. Shane’s decent for what he is but he shouldn’t be in one of the top 2 matches at Wrestlemania. But his offense his bad, him putting Undertaker in trouble or kickout of major spots was laughable considering Undertaker’s past matches and the opponents he fought. The Huge Spot was just scary. Didn’t Vince tell Mick Foley once he never wanted to see that again?

-Reigns-Hunter: first, was this match no DQ or not? Roman is kind of mechanically clumsy as John Cena is, but he doesn’t have close to Cena’s charisma to compensate; match was just plodding although not near as bad as Undertaker and Shane, but just felt draining the longer they went after 11pm, highlight of the match was Stephanie getting speared; hey, WWE has their champ, good luck with him on top…

About three or four pretty good wrestling matches in a four plus hour event isn’t quite enough.  I don’t think there is a single classic match or promo on this show.  The table stunt in the Hell in a Cell match will be remembered for a long time, but I don’t think that I will forget the 29 minutes of awful wrestling that surrounded it.  This would have been a very good B-ppv or network event, but only the nostalgia appearances made it feel like Wrestlemania.

Best Match – None

Worst Match – Reigns vs. HHH

Dave,

There was a time when I would get angry with a show like this, but I’m so used to the WWE way of booking now that I laugh.  AJ Styles losing makes no sense.  Zach Ryder winning the IC title came out of nowhere, yet again makes no sense.  The old guys destroying League of Nations makes your current guys look terrible, and the cheap nostalgia pop isn’t needed on this show.  And Shane didn’t need to take that bump off the cage for any reason whatsoever, it will be forgotten about no matter how cool it looked.
The main event?  Well, the match itself was OK.  We all knew who was going to win, regardless of the early shocking outcomes tonight.  The muting of the boos and piping in of cheers comes across so poorly, and it was really obvious.  I’m sure more people will go more in depth, but I’m tired after this marathon show!  Let’s see what Raw brings tomorrow, but it looks to be more of the same old, same old.

Best Match: Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte

Worst Match: Andre The Giant Battle Royal

This was going to be a thumbs in the middle until the main event. WrestleMania used to feel the place where huge storylines ended and we got satisfying payoffs. Not this year. Apart from the women’s title match and possibly the IC title match, no match tonight felt like it was special, like it was a career highlight to them. Most of the feuds tonight either had a middle chapter that will continue it for weeks or months to come, or an unsatisfying finish. All the legends and celebrities appearances were perfunctory and served no real purpose. You could argue that the two people who left this PPV with the most momentum were Shane McMahon and Zack Ryder. Think about that.

– The ladder match was pretty darn good, Zayn and Owens were the highlights. Ryder winning was a nice moment that came years too late.

– AJ vs. Jericho was good, but I don’t even know if it was “very good”. Jericho and AJ just do not click together. Jericho has lost a half a step in terms of pace, but he continues to work like he hasn’t. There was some sloppiness and a stunning lack of reaction at times. Jericho is leeching the heat AJ brought with him to WWE, and the fact that their WrestleMania match ended with them just trading back a win for the fourth time is infuriating. End this feud.

– New Day vs. The League of Nations was fine. The entrance was good. The legends post match was the most pointless waste of legends I’ve seen in quite awhile. If this was supposed to be a “big” segment, I no longer want to see big segments.

– Lesnar vs. Ambrose was fine, but ended just when it felt like it was getting interesting. Brock doing almost nothing but german suplexes was once fantastically entertaining, but the more often he does it, the less novel it gets. Ambrose comes off like a complete chump, who even when he is allowed to use all the weapons he wants, as was his plan, is still beaten relatively easy.

– Women’s three way was easily the best match of the night. A little sloppy and obviously heavily scripted, it was still the one match that felt like it was special to the wrestlers, Sasha in particular was bumping crazily and working 100 miles an hour. WWE did a good job of making it feel like a big deal with the new title, the entrances and the fireworks. The biggest disappointment was Sasha losing, as you could hear the crowd’s disappointment. Tonight was meant to be her night.

– Undertaker vs. Shane was every gimmick match ever. Not very good but then Shane does an insane bump and everyone leaves not remembering anything else. This needed way more smoke and mirrors and way less trading of submissions and horrible Shane punches.

– Battle Royal went way too long for a show that went this long. If this leads to a Corbin/Kane feud, help me God.

– Rock/Cena segment was just there, we’ve seen Rock do his thing a hundred times. It serves no real point, and like Lesnar, the novelty is wearing off.

– Main event was horrible. The fact that HHH worked a near 30 minute match after six hours of wrestling, after Shane’s bump, the Rock and the return of Cena, and against an opponent he had to know was going to get booed out of the building, shows his hubris. There might have been a good 15 minute match in here, I don’t want to try and find it.

This was the weirdest WrestleMania of all time. Only IX comes close.

Best Match: Women’s Title Match

Worst Match: Andre the Giant Battle Royal

This show reminded me a lot of the late 90s WCW shows. Good undercard, but main events that failed to deliver. When you include the pre-show matches it was a nearly 6 hour show and it became tedious to watch at the end. It also felt like the wrong person won almost every match. There were a few bright spots, but in the end there weren’t many feel good moments.

Thumbs way down for Wrestlemania. Can’t remember a show this out of touch in awhile.

Opener was Kalisto v. Ryback. Nothing RAW match. *

Naomi & Lana & Tamina & Summer Rae & Emma v. Paige & Natalya & Brie Bella & Eva Marie & Alicia Fox. A lot less missed spots than the women’s title match, although they only had four minutes. Emma looked really nervous, Lana’s outfit was the only highlight.  1/2* The entire build was centered around Lana and Brie but they ignored it because they forgot I guess or they just wanted to bury someone they don’t like? I don’t know which is worse.

Usos v. Dudleys. Not sure which act is staler. The constant praise of Mark LoMonaco has got to end. He’s a midcard heel who can’t work. Match was worse than. a RAW match. 1/2*

Kevin Owens v. Sami Zayn v. Dolph Ziggler v. Stardust v. Miz v. Sin Cara. A few decent spots, the best of which was a half-nelson suplex on a ladder. Match was disjointed and we’ve seen it all before and it was nothing more than a car wreck then. Nothing special and the finish was three years late. ** Burying Zayn with two losses makes him the new Tyler Breeze I guess.

A.J. Styles v. Chris Jericho. Match was actively bad like all their other matches. Jericho was never smooth in the ring but he’s a shell of himself and Styles seemed content to let him call the match. I hope Styles’ salary is worth this. A ton of missed spots and confusion, nothing looked sharp at all. Jericho looks like a retired rock star, which I guess he is minus the star. Dan Henderson has more life left in him than Jericho’s act. *3/4 They had something with the team of these two, and that RAW match with the New Day was the best thing in the storyline by far. Maybe they’ll go back to Y2AJ so Jericho can stand on the apron, something he can feasibly do at this point in his career.

Kofi Kingston & Big E & Xavier Woods v. Sheamus & Rusev & Alberto Del Rio. Match had Woods going the whole way and he’s helpless in the ring. It was all just build up for the spot with Foley, Austin and Michaels which made absolutely no sense and wouldn’t Austin have been better in the Wyatt segment? This was proof there’s still heat between Austin and the people in charge. * We’re hours into the show and it’s all been awful to this point.

Brock Lesnar v. Dean Ambrose. This was bad for a brawl and there was no wrestling at all to speak of. Lesnar did less than Scott Steiner during his WWE run. I actually was wishing Lesnar had gotten Wyatt instead. Ambrose should just move on with his life and frankly his goofy facials and average physique aren’t star material anyway. He’s a second rate Brian Pillman, and how many world titles did that guy win? DUD If they aren’t going to do anything with Lesnar, would he consider fighting Conor McGregor?

Charlotte v. Sasha Banks v. Becky Lynch. I mean, it’s nice that some people are pretending this wasn’t a trainwreck with a million blown moves, but the worst part of this was the psychology. Two babyfaces lost to one heel, and by the way every single heel went over on the main card of this show except for Zack Ryder and who cares about him?  Sasha botched tons of stuff and almost killed herself doing a space flying tiger drop. Becky’s work is so sloppy, and the personalities of these three don’t mesh at all. ** Go back to Natalya as challenger.

Undertaker v. Shane McMahon. Laughable and dull most of the way. Crowd barely got into the stunt show. It could have been worse, I suppose, but this deserved a lot more smoke and mirrors. Something so sad and depressing about this. -** Hopefully this is the swan song for everyone involved in this turgid angle.

Battle Royal was terrible, too bad they couldn’t get Shaq to train as a wrestler.

Rock segment was a mess. The material was so dated. He seemed like a sad old cursed albino man until it picked up with the Bray impression. Way too self-indulgent and it set up nothing for the future.

HHH v. Roman Reigns. It was the best match of the night, although that’s not saying much. Don’t understand not doing an angle here of any kind. Just felt really flat, although the humorous Steph intro was probably the highlight of this awful show. *** I don’t know what you do with Reigns except months of Brock Lesnar matches, and that already feels like a dead pairing given it was a Mania main event not too long ago.

They made a million different signings of talent recently and not one was on this show. They made no new stars at all here, and the show itself was wretched. Worst Wrestlemania since XI.

Thumbs down.

Best match: Women’s title.

Worst match: HHH vs. Roman Reigns.

This show merely showed that no matter how much good stuff is on a PPV, it can be destroyed by excess.

There was no reason for the main show to go nearly five hours. No reason for the main event to go 27 minutes. No reason for Shane McMahon to risk himself with that jump from the top of the cage. And, as much as it pains me to say it, no reason for Rock to do a segment that really helped no one.

Much of the show was good. The IC match was a fun spot fest. The women’s match was strong. A.J.-Jericho was good, if the booking was dumbfounding.

Brock Lesnar and Ambrose had a good match, but Ambrose was treated like a joke the whole feud, only to lose, clean, to Brock. I don’t see how he can be a top guy after losing so much.

The UT-Shane cage match was an exercise in removal of disbelief, including, but not limited to, Shane’s jump. The spot, the whole match, and the feud, seemed unnecessary. Especially for a 46-year old man who’s not even a part timer.

And the HHH-Reigns was just too long. It wasn’t horrible, but it dragged, with a result few wanted. This is the third time I remember HHH closing the show at WM and just hoping his match would end.

Again, if the show was 3 1/2 hours, it’d be solid. But at 5 hours it was just too much.

Keep up the great work.

Best Match: Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks

Worst Match: Andre Battle Royale

One of the worst Wrestlemanias of all time. This was like a mid 90s WCW PPV with great undercard matches killed by terrible finishes, old part timers making the young full time guys look like geeks and a guy who everyone hates going over in the main event. The only thing that had a Wrestlemania type feel was the women’s triple threat and that got ruined by the wrong person winning. Nothing came close to even the 4th best match on the Takeover show. And no show should ever go almost 7 hours long.

Best: Women’s championship match
Worst: Battle Royal

Much like many Cowboys games in AT&T Stadium, Wrestlemania faltered in the fourth quarter and turned a great show into an average one.

I don’t understand how they have 30 writers on staff, and they come up with straightforward matches for Hell in the Cell (that was ripe for run-ins like the Sting match last year) and the main event (which sorely needed some juice).

This show was cooking along nicely through the women’s match (albeit some questionable results — Ryder, Charlotte…JERICHO??), but the plodding pace of the Cell match hurt things, along with an anticlimactic finish.  WWE spent the last month saying their product sucked and Shane would make it better. Instead, it will continue to suck.

We need something more in Rock appearances too besides “promo, heel interrupts, Rock mocks them and beats them up.”  The Cena part was new, but figured he had to show up at some point.

I don’t know what the battle royal was supposed to be.  Good for Corbin to win it, but that should’ve been done last year with Itami when they actually had a good story to tell in his winning.

What can you say about the main event, except Vince does what he wants and HHH now has 3 flat Mania main events on his resume.

This show was just way too long for what was presented.  I put this on par with Mania 29, where it seems like they were more interested in putting on a “show” instead of a memorable wrestling card.  Hopefully things get back on track for Orlando next year.

– Chris Hughes

Hi Dave,

My Mania review. Really did not enjoy the show after last years awesome Mania exceeded all expectations. Was tediously long and had a weird pace and pretty bad uneventful booking overall that set up no new storylines. The commentary – even though I should be used to it by now – was so terrible amd added nothing to any of the matches and often took them down a notch.

MOTN: Ladder Match
Worst: Usos vs Dudleys

– US Title is a joke now. Poor Cena, he built it up so well.

– 10 Women Tag was a nice surprise. WWE is always good at doing 10 person matches as everyone comes in quick to their trademark spots.

– Dudley’s vs. Uso’s was terrible, but only because they were only given such a short amount of time. Why were Dudley’s faces today though?

– IC Ladder Match was the best match, but had a ridiculous winner who’s been on TV twice in last year. Vince will be bored of Ryder in 2 weeks and he’ll be losing to L.O.N. in non-title matches.

– AJ vs. Jericho was underwhelming. They seemed out of sync and never got a consistent flow. I knew Vince wasn’t putting over a TNA guy at Mania if he wouldn’t even put over Sting.

– L.O.N. vs. New Day was a glorified Smackdown match, and after getting the win and JBL rambling about the 4 Horsemen comparison, they immediately get beat up by retired Attitude Era stars. Austin is my favorite wrestler of all-time, but all I could think was thank God the Brock match never happened.

– Brock vs. Dean also underperformed. It wasn’t bad, but felt like an afterthought and could have been much more than it was.

– The Women’s match was OK. People are giving it more credit than it deserves because it wasn’t a “Divas” match, but it was still pretty sloppy and telegraphed after watching Asuka on Friday.

– HIAC was terrible. Shane’s offense was so horrendous (as expected). 5 minutes in all I could think was “thank God this isn’t on last.” The whole match was just filling time to get to the one pointless huge bump for the PG-era fans who have never had their own “Foley bump” moment. I was glad Taker won though, it would have been a joke him losing to Shane and I’m a proponent of not further devaluing The Streak. I think retiring with one loss is perfect, but I don’t want his Mania legacy turning into an Anderson Silva one.

– Battle Royal was terrible as usual. I did like having Shaq though. Reminded me of Mania 2 Battle Royal with the football players. Good spot to mix some celebrities like that.

– Thought The Rock segment was awful. Blah blah blah… fake attendance. Then he “breaks” Bundy’s record over SD Jones? Umm… OK? Are we supposed to care? Then once again have The Wyatt’s get beat up after they don’t even have a match.

– Main Event… I was so tired and uninvested by this point. Decent match in other circumstances, but crowd didn’t care, everyone was too tired, heel/face roles were reversed, and just did not have a “biggest” Mania main event feel. Vince sacrificed his daughter and have male on female violence to try and get Roman over, but guess what? He’s still getting boo’d tomorrow and has NO heels to work with going forward.

– Tim Dudley

Overall: Thumbs in the middle. This was mixed bag of an event in the purest sense. The first 2 plus hours were very good. The Taker/Shane match was beyond a mess. It seems the live crowd was more forgiving than the captive audience at home. From my perspective it came across really poor.  Both of the legend segments were the far and away highlights of the show.  Triple H and Roman Reigns wrestled the wrong type of match for the temperature of their feud and the scenario at hand. Hard to argue; this show was way too long.

Best Match; Out of everything, I enjoyed the opening ladder match the most.

Worst Match; Shane and Taker was painful to watch.

A. US Title Match: Kalisto vs. Ryback. Poor guys. With the troubles at the entrance gates, these guys wrestled in a 100,000 man stadium with less than 20,000 people in the building. As expected, they told the time tested David vs. Goliath story. The action was good and the story was told sufficiently. Decent opener. **

B. Team BAD and Blond vs. The Total Divas. Longer than expected and certainly not offensive by any means. Enjoyable match with a solid finish. **

C. The Dudley Boys vs. The Usos. The match did not have much to it. Felt like a third hour RAW match. Even the post match table spot got a lukewarm reaction. *1/2

Opening video package was epic. Ties the past to the present like only WWE can.

1. IC Title Ladder Match: Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Stardust vs. Zack Ryder vs. The Miz vs. Sin Cara.  Perhaps the best stunt show ladder match I have seen in some time. Innovative spots, a prevailing story thread, and a surprising victor. Awesome start to WM 32 and an incredible moment for Zack Ryder. ***1/2

2. Chris Jericho vs. AJ Styles. A few timing issues and a subdued crowd aside, they won the crowd over with a number of awesome sequences leading toward another surprising finish.  Not a great, but a very good match. Disappointing that AJ did not get a better response. ***

3. The New Day vs. The League of Nations.  Action was more hit than miss, but the match was not as interactive and “fun” as I expected. **

and then… perhaps I was dreaming, or the access Pizza carbs sent me into a yeast induced state of euphoria. Did I really see this. HBK! Mick Foley! and by god, Stone Cold Steve Austin !! Un-be-lievable!!!!

4. Street Fight: Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose. A new level of physical and intense. Essentially, this was the Punk/Lesnar story told at Summerslam three years back. Ambrose’s craziness added a unique element, but I do not know if it reached the level of Punk/Lesnar. Still a match that bordered on greatness. Props to Ambrose and Lesnar for not succumbing to the trend of multiple finisher/kickouts. People expect it too much at WM ***1/2

5. WWE Women’s Title Match: Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte. With the new belt, the position on the card, and the time allocation, they really did give a platform for the women to shine. They wrestled a very ambitious match. In many spots it felt too rushed, too choreographed, and very rickety. The ladies looked nervous.  The effort shined through in the end, but I think the performance fell short of what they wanted it to be***

6. Hell in a Cell: Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker. Way too slow and way too deliberate, and that is excusing an array of mistimed spots, terrible strikes, and senseless finisher kickouts. I wish they would have just rushed into the massive high spot and got it over with. With the exception of 2 or 3 highlights, this was a complete mess. With a payoff of this caliber, this has too be one of the worst WWE WM storyline and culminations in my memory.  The live crowd was way more forgiving then me. *

7. Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. The obligatory battle royal buffer between main events. It was a little but of fun and a whole lot of lame. Corbin winning was a pleasant surprise. *

The Rock/ Wyatt family segment.  What started as a hype segment, evolved to a verbal joust, became a quick singles match and transformed into a babyface celebration and crowd pleasing jubilee.  People will question the segment, but the show needed a shot in the arm. This was a shot of cocaine laced epinephrine.

8. WWE World Title Match: Triple H vs. Roman Reigns.  Methodical match that tried to mimic the title matches of yesteryear and fell well short. Unlike Taker/Shane, the work was believable, but after 7 hours of wrestling,  a match that never sped past second gear did not come across well to the live crowd. Roman is not the babyface he needs to be. The crowd appeared apathetic for the majority of the match, but they did come alive for the finish. This was the wrong main event for a show of this length. ***

Overall: BIG THUMBS DOWN

Best match: Charlotte vs. Banks vs. Bayley for Women’s title

Worst match: Undertaker vs. Shane McMahon

Not since Mania 16 has a Wrestlemania done so little to blow off any feuds or give the fans any sense of joy. Not since Mania 11 has there been such a terrible show overall. I guess the women’s match might have been 4 stars (the fuck finish was very lackluster), but other than that every match would have been lucky to crack 3 stars. The idea that the Reigns vs. The Authority angle must continue when the fan reaction and ratings make it INCREDIBLY clear that no one cares or enjoys it is just sad. I know the old stereotype of “he’s going to watch it no matter how much he complains” but I truly watch less WWE than I have in years. When I actually do watch Raw I skim through it in a bout 5-10 minutes. Vince McMahon is the George Lucas of wrestling and it’s long past time for him to pass the torch to someone else. Anyone else.

-Matthew Burrill @mattb425

THUMBS UP for execution, though not planning.

I mean, it is a $10 show, and a good one, but a failure in this respect: I do not want to tune in Monday to see what is going to happen now (assuming I was a casual fan).  WM should be a hook to draw lost fans back in, and the show seems to be a failure in that respect.

It was, in many ways, a non-sequitur-Mania, with various entertaining nostalgia spots (Rocky promo, seeing Stone Cold deliver a stunner in some kind of sweat pants, an ill-advised re-dux of the off-the-top-of-the-HIC spot, a great entrance by Sasha Banks, Stephanie taking a spear like a champ!) but no angles were paid off, and no new ones were started (I mean, how far can Sasha’s beef with Ric Flair go?).  Shaq’s appearance was a surprise, and interesting, but it just has nowhere to go.

I liked Baron Corbin’s win, and Zach Ryder’s win (which were nods to NXT on the big show); Brock Lesnar’s match felt pointless, which is not a good use of a talent like him.

BEST MATCH: For me it was Jericho-Styles.  It reminded me of Steamboat-Savage, in that two excellent technicians were putting on a show down on the card, that managed to have some emotional resonance.

WORST MATCH: Taker-Shane.  In one way, I think Shane is a believable opponent for Taker, in that a win was not unexpected.  But the match was not credible, and I would have preferred that Foley was the only person ever to come off the top of the Cell.  Another streak was broken in this match, and this one to me even more regrettable.

A WORD ON THE TITLE MATCH: Looking at the nostalgia acts we saw tonight, all had 1 thing in common: they could TALK, which Roman cannot.  Circumstances being what they are, he can still get over as a heel, but they won’t let him.

And why did fireworks go off after Roman won?  Shouldn’t the authority be mad?

This was a decent match, but like a lot of the booking on this show, it left A LOT to be desired.  A very flat finish, and the Referee basically ignoring the sledge hammer was also ridiculous.

  – Through connections I made my way backstage and a friend had an odd conversation with Bray Wyatt about him getting dreadlocks soon? Not sure the truth behind that but sounds weird for a cult leader.

WWE FastLane Reader feedback

WWE Fastlane: Thumbs Up

Best Match: Styles vs. Jericho

Worst Match: Truth vs. Axel (short, but had no business on this show)

Preshow U.S. Title match got things going well with a good match.  Nice to see Kalisto retain.  Not sure exactly what’s going on with Del Rio.  They are paying him a heck of a lot to be on the pre-show and the rest of the League of Nations seems way misused as well.

Divas tag match was decent, but not great.  It was the right finish though with Banks and Lynch to set up Mania.

Owens vs. Ziggler was a good match even though they’ve done it a bunch of times already.  Glad to see Owens retain and hope he has a good spot at Mania.

Show & Kane & Ryback vs. Wyatt’s was decent six man tag, although one I didn’t really care about too much.  Not sure the faces going over was the best call if the Wyatt’s are supposed to be strong for Mania, but then again they didn’t show at the end like I figured or Lesnar, so maybe they are changing course or saving it for tomorrow.

Charlotte vs. Brie was better than I expected and it was the right outcome again even if they wanted to give Brie a big moment after the Daniel Bryan retirement, but luckily they stuck with Charlotte retaining for WrestleMania.

AJ Styles vs. Jericho was great.  Have loved all their matches so far against each other.  Really well done and Styles winning was the right move.  Jericho has really done his best to actually put over the matches and the wins and losses and even put the Miz over this week in commentary.  It’s nice to see him try to help make others look good as well.  The announcers don’t even do that too much.

The Cutting Edge Peep Show was entertaining for the most part, but strange at the same time.  Not sure about a New Day vs. League of Nations feud.

Truth vs. Axel was a wasted spot even if it was short.  This could have been on Raw easily.  They could have given two extra minutes to the main event or someone else.

Triple Threat main event was very good even if it was a predictable finish and no controversy came from it, but it did what they set out to do which is to make Reigns vs. Triple H for Mania.

Overall a good solid show.

Hi Dave,

Here’s my FastLane Review:

Thumbs Down

Match of the Night: Ambrose vs. Reigns vs. Lesnar

Worst Match: Do I have to pick only one? Truth vs. Axel just because it had no business on a PPV

Thought that was a really, really weak show as your last PPV going into Mania. It felt like a glorified 3-hour Raw. Divas tag match, Wyatt’s vs. Show/Kane/Ryback, R-Truth vs. Axel? Just awful. The kind of turn-the-channel segments we get every single week on Raw.

The New Day and Edge & Christian (and L.O.N.) segment was beyond awful. Even if Raw expanded to 4 hours, there’s no excuse for this. One of the most awful segments I can ever remember on a PPV (I’m sure there’s been worse that I’ve mentally blocked out, but this was next level cringe). I’m to understand this segment was supposed to make us want to watch The Edge & Christian Show? This segment was so awful there was no chance in hell I was sticking around for even one minute after the PPV was over.

Based on all of the above, can someone explain to me why Kalisto vs. ADR was on the pre-show?

Owens vs. Ziggler was good, but it’s hard to care after seeing them fight almost weekly for months (or what feels like months at least). Brie vs. Charlotte was decent for what it was, but had an awful finish and then having Cole try to cover up for Brie and say her knee blew out, etc. after the fact. Shouldn’t commentators tell us this information while the match is going on? Jericho vs. Styles was good, but once again, a match we’ve seen repeatedly on TV in the classic WWE 50/50 feud. I just can’t get into Jericho at all in this run. He gets the nostalgia pop, says a few 1999 catchphrases, and is noticeably slow now. He can still put together a good match, but it’s hard to get invested in anything he’s doing. I thought having him kick out of the Styles Clash in what is AJ’s sixth televised match (?) was shockingly stupid. The crowd buys that as a hot finisher and it’s been kicked out of already in his first major feud on a throw-away PPV.

The main event was the best match as expected, but my God, the camera work in this match was SO DISTRACTING. I hear Vinny complain about this every week on the Bryan & Vinny Raw reviews, and honestly I usually don’t notice it that much, but tonight in the main event it seemed like EVERY big spot during the match – or when one of them would run back in the ring to pull off a big move they missed it or were zoomed in so tight on someone’s face that you couldn’t see what happened, or they cut to another camera right at the point of impact and we totally missed the impact of the spot. It really was driving me nuts. Surprisingly, no chicanery to the finish, which seemed flat and without quite enough build-up (at least to the way we’ve been conditioned), and in a surprise to nobody, Reigns goes on to face Hunter.

Even though I was expecting – and had accepted Reigns vs. HHH as the main event of Mania due to all the injuries – once it actually happened and Reigns was confirmed as the challenger, I just had such apathy to the match and Reigns chasing his THIRD title in such a short span.

Best match: Reigns vs Brock vs Ambrose
Worst match: Axel vs Truth

The first 90 minutes of this were tremendous. Pre show and women’s opener were a lot of fun. Happy Kalisto get the win. IC and Styles-Jericho were exactly what I hoped they would be. Nice to see Owens and Styles going over. Women’s title was good enough. I love Charlotte as a heel and thought the story played out well.

The six way was a nice bathroom break.

And then it fell apart. The Edge/Christian segment was simply unwatchable. And their show was even worse. That mess gets followed up with a Social Outcasts filler match that would have made people change the channel on RAW. Did they time the show wrong? I cannot imagine why those two segments took up 30+ minutes.

The main event was a tremendous match. But my God is Reigns not over. I’ll never understand the insistence on his push. He wasn’t over last year and this year seems to be worse.

Best Match – Jericho vs. Styles

Worst Match – Axel vs. Truth

Dave,

This show was just awful in my opinion.  The network itself had problems for more than 3/4 of the show, and the product felt like a throw away episode of Raw.  To make matters worse, we head into Mania with a main event that is very predictable.  WWE needs to hit a home run tomorrow with Raw.

I have watched wrestling for over 30 years, and I dont think Ive ever hated the WWE product as much as I do now.  Between this and Bellator, its been a rough weekend all around.

Hey Dave,

Overall: Slight thumbs up. The first half of the show was enjoyable with solid action that met or exceeded my expectations.  Both the US Title Match and the IC Title Match were solid wrestling matches. Disappointing- would be the first word that comes to mind when attempting to describe the AJ Styles and Chris Jericho match.  Timing and Tentativeness by AJ and some sloppy and missed moves by Jericho hurt the flow of the match. The road was rough, but in the end they did reach the destination.  After the AJ/Jericho match, the show descended to the depths of the dreaded third hour of RAW. Thankfully, the incredible main event provided the needed shot in the arm to save the show.

If objective 1 was to solidify the main event title match for WrestleMania; that objective has been achieved.  As for the rest of the WrestleMania card, it is as murky and uncertain coming out of Fastlane then it was going into the event. I feel like Ambrose’s performances in recent weeks have earned him a prominent spot on the WrestleMania card.  I am hoping he gets a match against Brock Lesnar. It feels like it is at least a possibility.  No matter what the final plans are, the WWE has lots of work in plating seeds and building frames for those plans in the coming weeks.

Best Match: The main event was fantastic.

Worst Match: R Truth and Curtis Axel should have been left off the show.

A.  US Title 2/3 falls match: Calisto vs. Alberto Del Rio. These two brought it and delivered a hotly contested title match. The action was better than their previous encounters and the story was enhanced and defined. Perhaps, this was Del Rio’s best match since returning to WWE.  He looked formidable in defeat and Calisto looked valiant in victory. ***1/2

1. Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks vs. Naomi and Tamina. Heat was a little slow, but it did it’s job in building anticipation for the hot tag.  Match picked up after the hot tag to Sasha and escalated with some nice twists and turns. The finishing sequence was spot on in making both potential challengers look credible. **1/2

2. IC Title Match: Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler.  Great action in the match greeted with a mostly tepid crowd response. Dolph worked 75 percent of the match from underneath and yet could not elicit an enthusiastic response from his hometown crowd. The audience appreciated the action, but did not root for one wrestler to win and the other to loose. I don’t know if that says more about Ziggler’s mediocrity as a face or Owens’ shortcomings as a heel. ***

3. The Wyatt Family vs. Big Show, Kane, and Ryback. Slow and plodding to start as most matches involving multiple 300 pounders are. They picked up the intensity and creativity towards the end and were rewarded with a favorable crowd response. I am surprised by the outcome, but am appreciative of the effort put forth by all 6 men. **1/2

4. Diva’s Title Match: Brie Bella vs. Charlotte. The story of the match was Brie using the trademarks maneuvers of her husband and sister in an attempt to dethrone the champ. I am not sure her imitations were sincere flattery. There was some good maneuvers and sequences, but I am not sure they made up an abundance of ugly spots and bad timing. Charlotte has made significant progress when it comes to character and presence, but her ring work is overrated. **

5. AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho. This match felt important. The hype video and pre match promo helped create the feeling. The match fell short of great, and hence was disappointing. An abundance of timing issues throughout that looked to be the result of miscommunication and uncharacteristic tentativeness by AJ .  The journey was rocky, but they did reach the destination. Very surprised that Jericho kicked out of the most “over” finish in wrestling. **3/4

6. R Truth vs. Curtis Axel. How did this make the show?

7. WWE World Title Number 1 Contender Match: Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar. Great match in which all three stars were given ample opportunity to shine. In format, this was similar to last years triple threat match at the Rumble. My shotgun reaction is it might have been better.  The  main event for WM is set, but both Brock and Ambrose are in need of opponents. It seems logical to put them together. ****

Thumbs in the Middle: So-so undercard and a really great main event.

Best Match: Reigns vs. Lesnar vs. Ambrose

Worst Match: Axel vs. R-Truth

1. Kalisto vs. ADR. Fine opener. They need to find good opponents for Kalisto. Mauro Ranallo was better here than Cole could ever be. ***

2. Sasha & Becky vs. Naomi & Tamina. Some messy spots but overall fine. **3/4

3. Owens vs. Ziggler. Good but could have been better ***1/4

4. Ryback & Kane & Show vs. Wyatts. WFT result. I guess Bray is out of the picture as a rival for Lesnar at Mania which is a good thing. Even with that, the Family as a unit, needed the win. Maybe Ryback is going to face Goldberg after all. **

5. Charlotte vs. Brie. Brie messed some spots but as whole was a fine presentation. **1/2

6. AJ vs. Jericho. The layout of this was super but it was rough in the execution. Either was too quick or Jericho is getting slow, I bet the later. The Styles was protected by so long that it was hard to believe that somebody kicked out of it on a “B” level show. ***1/2

7. R-Truth vs. Axel. Why this was on a PPV is beyond me, if they wanted to fill time then just give it to the undercard matches. DUD

8. Reigns vs. Lesnar vs. Ambrose. Great match. Predictable finish. Just by the reaction at the end one just know that they really got noting as far as main event attraction for Mania. Hindsight being 20/20 Roman needed to win the title last year from Brock, that was the planned scenario and the right one. But they changed because of fear of him being booed at the end. Guess what? Now he is in the same position but against a lesser opponent. Not to mention that he is already a two time champion with less than 50 days with the title. But the WWE brand and Mania name carried things these days so they are going to get 70-90 thousands fans in there even though nobody cares about who is wrestling. ****1/2

How you doin’ Dave,

Thumbs In The Middle

Del Rio vs. Kalisto ***1/4
Going in thought anything below 20 minutes would be insufficient, felt the same way watching it, although felt they managed the time given well. Would’ve liked them to be a bit more heavy-handed both with Del Rio’s aggression & Kalisto’s selling, but thought it was a good match with some nice spots & glad to see Kalisto come out of the program (I presume) with the title.

Banks & Lynch vs. Tamina & Naomi **1/2
Surprised to see this go on first, crowd was a little flat, although they were for a considerable amount of the show, thought Becky was very solid as usual, thought it was fine until the back end of the heat where things got a little messy, Naomi wasn’t the best at feeding Sasha, a lack of fluidity here & there, but overall I thought it was ok.

Owens vs. Ziggler ***1/2
Thought the layout was a bit weird with Owens getting the heat from the outset, then Ziggler applying a sleeper on the ground met with heavy resistance from Owens for what I assume was a hope spot, then they sort of went to early stages stuff with headlocks & shoulders blocks, then back into the heat, very weird stuff. Thought there was a bit of awkwardness going into the comeback, once they came out of the comeback I thought there was some good action, lots of nice spots and nearfalls, would’ve liked a bit more creativity & uniqueness with spots ala’ hurricanrana into the stairs spot, thought it was good though preferred some of their Raw matches.

Ryback/Big Show/Kane vs. Wyatts **
Very surprised by the finish, can only assume the program continues in some form going into Mania, thought it wasn’t very pretty for long periods although picked-up towards the end, Strowman looks to be improving & looked semi- competent, Ryback dumped Harper on his shoulder for the finish which wasn’t nice to see.

Worst Match: Charlotte vs. Brie *1/2
Thought this was pretty poor for the first two thirds of the match, with neither some good action or strong character work prior to the heat, rhythm was off, a lot of awkwardness, but picked up somewhat towards the end.

Styles vs. Jericho ***1/2
Thought it was a good match, but something was missing, and I can’t put my finger on it. It was a unique match in-terms of layout by WWE standards (for the better), there was a lot of nice work & creative spots, however I don’t whether it was the rhythm or pacing of the match, or a lack of drama, or what, but there was something missing, a lack of spark. I felt it was one of the those matches where most things look good but it kinda just drifts along.

R-Truth vs. Axel *1/2
Surprised it was on the card, didn’t feel they did anything wrong, but wasn’t much to it.

Best Match: Ambrose vs. Reigns vs. Lesnar ****1/4
Thought it was a great combination of telling a good story & being a spectacular spotfest that wasn’t too fast paced, where lots of things lose a great deal of meaning & significance, although there were some instances of almost complete no-selling of big moves which I felt wasn’t warranted, also I felt they handled Brock very well. Saying all of that I didn’t feel it was at the level of the Brock vs. Cena vs. Rollins match, which you can’t help but compare it to with the style of the match. Also it’s another match where it left me feeling they’re playing a very dangerous game, in the sense of where do they go from here after doing so much stuff & the standards that sets, & it crapping on lesser matches when you expect guys to go out of there & build slowly and keep the crowd entertained. Ultimately I don’t think you can continue to put on main event matches of this type and not be forced to make alterations to the “WWE style” at some stage. In addition I was surprised with no interference coming from The Wyatts, and this combined the six-man loss has me questioning the Brock-Bray program.

Thanks Dave

Best Match: Styles vs Jericho

Worst Match: Truth vs Axel (as soon as it came on, it had to clinch it right?)

Was on the fence about Thumbs Middle or Up.  Hard to bring down a show too far that had 4 matches I really liked, and 2 others that were entertaining enough but there was some odd and maddening stuff here.  Which I am sure many will bring up or already have. The 2/3 falls match which was solid, on the preshow while the New Day talking segment and the impromptu Truth match being on the main card.  Stuff like those last 2 would be more than fine on the preshow, keep the quality on the main card. The Styles clash kick out. The Wyatts losing. The network feed having the most issues in a while for many users. The crowd audio adjustments for Reigns.

The main event had good storytelling and a ton of intensity but had this feeling that right when it was going into a third act with the multiple Ambrose chairshots it was over with Reigns’ quick recovery.  I hope parts werent hacked off for the aforementioned New Day/Goldust stuff.  Have this sinking feeling it was which is too bad.  As Dave and Bryan and every other Pro Wrestling reporter or host stated well in advance, Reigns was the least popular in the match. Ive said before – I LIKE Reigns but it seems like trying to get him over is the proverbial two steps forward one step back or sometimes feels like three forward and five back and its cringeworthy watching crowds still reject the guy. The match itself delivered though. Almost gave best match to Owens-Ziggler due to some misses in Styles-Jericho but the good work overcame those slips, and Jericho had really quick thinking covering as well. Both women’s matches continued the trend of being better than most of the “Diva’s” matches historically were.  They still arent on the level of the NXT women’s matches but progress is good.

Wish we had a better sense of what’s on tap for Mania aside from Hunter-Reigns.  They have 6 RAW’s to get there.  I hope that TV isnt wasted.   I was assuming one final Jericho-Styles match but the handshake seems to end that. Hopefully as fun as the series was between them, Del Rio vs Kalisto should be over.  Get Alberto back higher on the card and highlight Kalisto some more with the title. Let’s get some teases to Undertaker’s opponent and announce some more Hall of Famers and fill out the card.  I am guessing there are still a lot of tickets to sell!

Best Match: Probably the main event, although AJ vs. Jericho was a very close second

Worst Match: Axel vs. R-Truth

This show had a lot to like – the opening women’s tag, the I-C match, the Charlotte-Brie match, AJ vs. Jericho, and the main event were all good.  With AJ I feel like he’s having a little trouble adjusting to his new surroundings; nothing he’s done so far is indicative of what he’s been capable of in every other company he’s worked for (By the way, seriously guys, someone’s already kicked out after the Styles Clash?  Way to protect one of the best finishers in the world, dinks.).  But this was his best WWE match so far.

The main event was very entertaining but of course WWE went with the dreaded Reigns win, predictably to a chorus of boos (and visible thumbs-down signs from ringside fans).  I just don’t know in what universe Vince thinks Reigns’ inevitable WWE Title win at WM32 over the highly respected Triple H will result in the Dallas fans (or any other city for that matter) embracing him as their new hero. Despite Hunter being the company’s top heel the fans still like him, particularly due to his work in running NXT (that’s the price of a double on-camera life).  Reigns is just not going to work as the top babyface, at least not until he has a great heel run.  Creative has taken everything away from Reigns that made him cool in the first place and now people just aren’t that into him.  It’s going to be a loooooong ten years if Vince thinks Reigns can overcome what John Cena went through to earn everyone’s respect.  And Reigns isn’t Cena.

As for the rest of the show, I have no earthly idea why the US Title match had to be bumped for the E&C talk show or the Axel-Truth match.  What’s wrong with this picture?

Overall a decent show but it failed in getting me excited for WrestleMania.  Because I’m not.

Best Match: Roman Reigns vs Dean Ambrose vs Brock Lesnar

Worst Match: R-Truth vs Curtis Axel

The show was close to being good top-to-bottom. The Edge and Chritian segment with New Day and League of Nations went on too long and I saw no point to R-Truth vs Curtis Axel.

All that being said the rest of the show was good. I wasn’t sure how the triple threat was going at first but it turned out really well, with Reigns getting a credible win. I thought he and Ambrose opposed each other enough so that Lesnar didn’t come off as the babyface of the match. And the powerbomb spots were great.

Owens vs Ziggler was really good as well and I thought Del Rio vs Kalisto was great. Styles vs Jericho probably would have been my match of the night if it wasn’t for the couple scary spots. And Charlotte vs Brie was rough at times but was good at the end.

Best Match – Main event

Worst Match – Brie vs Charlotte

Just a horrible show that dragged all night.  The only highlights were the Styles-Jericho match (when Jericho wasn’t sucking wind) and the main event, especially Brock.  The only thing worse than the segment with Edge/Christian, New Day and the League of Nations was the WWE Network feed, which was the worst it has been in years and years.  So many delays, lags and jumps.

Enzo Amore and Big Cass (with Carmella) against The Ascension

  • Fans did not really know Enzo’s pre-match spiel, pretty silent during their intro aside from the SAWFT line by Cass
  • Pretty decent match between the four but I dont think many people knew who Amore and Cass were. The heels get the heat on Enzo and he eventually makes the hot tag to Cass.
  • Finish sees Amore hit a splash onto Viktor for the win

Miz vs. AJ Styles

  • Major heat for Miz, who got on the mic and complained about Styles breaking his tooth earlier this week
  • Styles comes out to a massive pop and before they lock up there are huge “AJ Styles” chants and a light “this is awesome” chant
  • Pretty good stuff here, with Miz hitting the skull crushing finale and Styles kicking out. Styles teased the Clash but Miz broke out. Finish saw Styles lock in the calf slicer for the win

Rusev vs. Axel

  • Lana works the crowd by bashing Abbotsford and saying how everyone should be so grateful to see herself and Rusev. This brings out Axel (by himself) to not much reaction
  • Axel says he will kick Rusev’s ass and then have Lana to himself and shakes his hips like Rick Rude
  • Short match follows, with Lana distracting Axel and it leading to a superkick and accolade.
  • Rusev then gets on the mic again and asks for competition. This brings out Jack Swagger and another short match that sees Swagger roll up Rusev in a few minutes

New Day vs. Usos/Ryback

  • Huge reaction for New Day, who came out first and then had to return to the back because their smoke pyro didnt go off. Light boos for the Usos but Ryback was over. He’s wearing new tights that say “Big Guy” and now wrestles wearing a weight belt.
  • Fun match follows, with Ryback eventually catching Woods and hitting the shell shock on him

Lucha Dragons vs. Los Matadores

  • Dragons come out to a decent reaction, while the Matadores come out to crickets. They then establish themselves as heels by taking a Lucha Dragons shirt and wiping their nose/underarm and ass with it.
  • Pretty pedestrian match, with the finish seeing Sin Cara hit one of the Matadores with a swanton

Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

  • Both girls got decent reactions, and the match had some decent spots, including Lynch apply an armbar to Charlotte, who turned it into a powerbomb.
  • Lynch reversed the figure eight but moments later Charlotte rolled her up with the tights to win

Main Event: Roman Reigns vs. Alberto Del Rio

  • Del Rio was over, and was interacting a lot with the crowd. He was behaving like a face to the males over 13. Good reaction for Reigns, with kids and women behind him
  • Solid match, but a little long. Reigns eventually goes over after fighting out of the armbar twice. Reigns hits a spear to win.

Biggest Pops:

1) AJ Styles

2) Roman Reigns

3) New Day

Biggest Heat

1) Miz

2) Rusev

3) Charlotte

The Week In British Wrestling: Scurll vs Ospreay, part 2; Grado loses title

We’ve got some of the best grapplers in the world doing great things on a weekly basis! Here’s 5 things you need to know about British wrestling this week:

1) Scurll & Ospreay do it again…

On January 16th, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, Will Ospreay and Marty Scurll put on a masterclass of modern wrestling at Revolution Pro-Wrestling’s High Stakes event. Just 8 days later, at PROGRESS’s Chat Sh*t, Get Banged, across London at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, they did it again. The two matches, although they were both around 30 minutes long, could not have been more different. The first was all about showing how to link a series of moves into a flawless contest, the second – also virtually flawless – was about emotion and feeling and two men who hate one another.

Ospreay is being talked about in hushed tones, and watching him you do get the feeling that every time might be the last time, that before your ticket for his next appearance can be validated, he’ll be off to Orlando or Japan. Scurll had a glimpse of glory, runner-up in the first TNA Bootcamp, and you sometimes could be forgiven for thinking his time has passed. This past week – and a year of solid work as The Villain before that – shows that to be nonsense, and both men would enhance the roster of any company in the world. For now, though, they’re ours. Enjoy it while it lasts.

2) PROGRESS banged it…

As well as the superb main event detailed above, Chat Sh*t, Get Banged, named after a tweet from Leicester City (PROGRESS owner Jim Smallman’s team) footballer Jamie Vardy, delivered everything it promised. Mark Haskins – bearing the marks of a pounding by Kenny Omega in Swindon the night before – beat Zack Gibson to become the number one contender, and will face new PROGRESS champion Marty Scurll in Manchester on February 14th. Opening the card, The Origin beat FSU to retain the tag-team titles, and their next challengers will likely come from whoever wins the feud between the London Riots and the Sumerian Death Squad. They kicked off a three-match series on Sunday with a Michael Dante versus Rob Lynch encounter that was every bit as hard-hitting as a New Japan NEVER title match.

Coming dangerously near to stealing a show with so much talent having so many great matches, however, were the women, who turned a four-way into an intense twenty minute encounter, with even the most skeptical about the distaff athletes converted and delivering a standing ovation by the end. Dastardly Sloan ranger Jinny triumphed, and will face Leva Bates at the next ENDVR show in March, but there are so many threads still dangling between the four – Pollyanna, Dahlia Black, and Toni Storm made up the quartet – that this will run for the whole year. And that year will be a year in which PROGRESS promotes at least 22 shows, each one more anticipated than the last. It’s a great time to be a fan of British wrestling.

3) ICW turned a different corner…

The build-up to Square Go, Insane Championship Wrestling’s version of the Royal Rumble, was all about the feud between ICW Heavyweight champion Grado and his challenger, Chris Renfrew. Renfrew, the leader of the New Age Kliq, framed his challenge as defending the honour of ICW, although few outside NAK loyalists went along with that. But, after the dust had settled on Sunday’s show, it was Renfrew who came away with the title, leaving Grado – who debuted a new look, with new music – wondering where to go next.

Renfrew’s first challenge could come from his fellow NAKer, Wolfgang, who walked out of the Square Go match with a heavyweight title shot, after besting 29 other men to win a 12-month window to cash in his opportunity. The rules of Square Go allow for 5 wrestlers to bring weapons to the ring, and the lucky recipients were Noam Dar (steel chair), Timm Wylie (lead pipe), Red Lighting (kendo stick), Jack Jester (sex toy), and Sebastian, who brought his GZR tag-team partner Tom Irvin as his weapon. Also in the match were Dave Mastiff, Jimmy Havoc, Doug Williams, ICW owner Mark Dallas, and all the ICW regulars. Next up for ICW is their spring tour, visiting England, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland, and it’s all building towards November’s massive Fear & Loathing IX.

4) Alpha Omega kicked off their 2016 season…

While British wrestling has its areas of concentration, the north Lancashire coast is not exactly a hotbed of grappling action, despite the part the area played in the tradition and history of the sport in the UK. Preston City Wrestling operates 30 miles inland but the seaside is dominated by Alpha-Omega Wrestling, based in Morecambe, and presenting a series of well-attended, sensibly-booked shows that have kept fans in the area – and the adventurous traveller – entertained since they emerged in 2007 as the XWA. Initially owned by former FWA promoter (and on-screen personality) Greg Lambert, the promotion has passed through several hands but is still booked by Lambert, alongside current owner Charles Nelson Riley. The promotion tries to harken back to a time when wrestling was real, and while the success (or otherwise) might speak more about the people of the town than anything else, it’s a refreshing change in an era of kayfabe-breaking, social media-embracing meta wrestling, and more power to them.

Saturday’s Outbreak event, at Alpha-Omega’s regular Morecambe Winter Gardens home, attracted a healthy crowd to see heavyweight champion Stixx down Joe Hendry, the latest contender to try and break an 8-year undefeated streak. Also on the show, The Referendum (the top heel stable, all Scots and playing on the 2014 Scottish divorce from the UK which never quite happened), represented by Liam Thomson & Bobby Roberts, won the tag-team titles, Craig Kollins beat Chris Silvio, and Lana Austin & Alexis Rose defeated Nikki Storm & Carmel Jacob. With a roster that also includes Chris Ridgeway, Cyanide, and many of the northern standouts, Alpha-Omega are one of the UK’s best kept secrets, and might just be worth a trip to the seaside…

5) The shows keep coming…

As well as spending much of the year promoting spot shows around their south west territory, 4 Front Wrestling promotes several big shows a year, and this weekend presented New Year’s Wrestleultion, at the MECA in Swindon. The show was supposed to have been main-evented by a 4FW Heavyweight title match between Tiger Ali and Doug Williams, but a series of events led to Williams putting his title shot on the line against local favourite Samie Sahin and losing, before helping Sahin beat Ali to win the title which sent the hall crazy. Also on the show, Kenny Omega beat Mark Haskins to win the vacant 4FW Cruiserweight title, and then immediately vacated it because he’s a heavyweight now, Drago beat Pentagon Jr in a Lucha Underground showcase match, and Japanese women’s star Hikaru Shida beat Shanna. The women were also in action down the road in High Wycombe (Nadia Sapphire actually worked both shows), where Empress Pro-Wrestling presented Never Say Never Again at the Arts4Every1 Centre. Three of the four women from the PROGRESS match were in action, with Jinny losing to Kira Fox, Toni Storm beaten by Courtney, and Pollyanna teaming with Katie Harvey to defeat Rhia O’Reilly & Addy Starr. Robbie Brookside’s daughter, Xia, also worked the show.

With an eye on the next generation, IPW:UK staged Future 15 on Saturday, at the Community Centre in Selsdon. As well as a multi-man “scrum” match (won by ProJo head trainer Darrell Allen, and also featuring London Riot James Davis, Lord Jonathan Windsor, and the return of scene veteran Muscles Mansfield), women’s champion Tennessee Honey successfully defended her title against Elizabeth, tag-team champions DnD saw off Sammy Smooth & Maverick Mayhew, and Donovan Dijak collided with Rampage Jackson in a super heavyweight bout. Across the Thames Estuary, in Essex, Reloaded Championship Wrestling Alliance – a promotion part-owned by Will Ospreay – presented Fall Out at the Rainham Methodist Church. Ospreay worked the opener, defeating 2016 rookie of the year contender Malik, while his Swords of Essex tag-team partner Paul Robinson beat Ash Draven & Sean Wilson in a handicap match, by disqualification. Also on the show, which our spy highly recommended, were “Blackbelt” Tom Dawkins, and TNA Bootcamp nearlymen Chuck Cyrus and Priscilla.
