GFW strips Alberto El Patron of World Championship

GFW announced its decision this morning to strip Alberto El Patron of his Unified World Championship which would seem to indicate he will not be appearing at the television tapings this week.

Sources in the promotion had told us that the decision had not been made over the weekend.

Because they are taping television through the end of October, everything leading to Bound for Glory, if Alberto is not at television, and it appears he won’t be, all the main event plans would have to be changed and a new champion would have to be crowned.

Ed Nordholm would have been the person with the final say on this matter and we had heard that even though Alberto was cleared of all charges regarding the Orlando Airport incident, that his long-term behavior had been a concern.

The company released a statement:“GFW has concluded its internal consideration of the events surrounding the suspension of Alberto El Patron. While it is apparent that initial reports unfairly characterized El Patron’s involvement in the incident in the Orlando airport, we are nonetheless disappointed with the manner in which he dealt with this situation, we expect more decorum from all on the GFW roster, especially the World Champion.”

We have communicated with El Patron our decision to strip him of his championship title. No decision has been taken as to the date on which he will be reinstated to the roster, the conditions of which are a private matter between the company and El Patron.”

One would expect an announcement in the next few days regarding the filling of the championship, which would likely take place at the tapings that start on Thursday with an almost-live show.

As noted this past week on Wrestling Observer Radio, John Morrison will be brought in for television this week for a top position.

AUDIO: Jeff Jarrett addresses Alberto El Patron suspension

While most of the conversation was supposed to be about Global Force Wrestling’s post-Slammiversary plans and the company’s recent rebrand, Jeff Jarrett addressed Alberto El Patron’s suspension on a conference call with the pro wrestling media today.

GFW noted that their statement would be all they’re saying for now while requesting that questions about El Patron not be asked, but Jarrett called the situation with El Patron being investigated for domestic battery “unfortunate” and said that they’re continuing to dig into the matter.

One of the first questions asked was about whether El Patron would be edited out of upcoming episodes of Impact like TNA had to do with Hernandez when his contract with Lucha Underground prohibited him from appearing on TV. Jarrett said that the situations weren’t similar due to Hernandez not legally being allowed to be shown, then said that everyone knows that the incident happened after they taped and that he thought it would further damage their brand to edit footage out.

A question was later posed about whether El Patron would be stripped of the GFW Unified World Championship, with Jarrett saying that it hasn’t been addressed yet because it’s far from what’s most important right now.

Elsewhere on the call, Jarrett maintained that Anthem owns the “Broken Hardys” characters and stated that there’s been no agreement for The Hardys to acquire the rights to them.

GFW suspends Alberto El Patron until resolution of investigation

Global Force Wrestling has suspended Alberto El Patron until the investigation into him for domestic battery is resolved.

The company issued a statement today: “Global Force Wrestling has indefinitely suspended Alberto El Patron, effective immediately, until the investigation is resolved following a recent incident in Orlando, Florida.”

Prior to suspending him, GFW had noted that they were taking the incident seriously and that they would fully investigate it and cooperate with law enforcement.

El Patron was detained at the Orlando International Airport on Sunday following what one witness referred to as “an altercation” between him and Paige. TMZ later released audio of the incident, confirming that it was between El Patron and Paige after Paige had tweeted that they were the ones to get police involved after a fan threw a drink into El Patron’s face.

In posts on Facebook, Paige’s brothers both alleged that El Patron has physically abused their sister.

El Patron defeated Bobby Lashley at Slammiversary to become GFW’s Unified Champion. He was one of the focal points of the post-PPV television tapings, and Jeff Jarrett clarified on a media conference call that he won’t be edited out of upcoming shows.

Impact Wrestling rebranding as Global Force Wrestling

When it was announced earlier this week that Impact Wrestling’s parent company had officially acquired Global Force Wrestling, it wasn’t entirely clear if that would result in any noticeable change in operations.

Now, it appears that Impact Wrestling is rebranding as Global Force Wrestling. A report from The Tennessean noted that today, with it saying that the move is to distance the company from the financial trouble and legal drama that had surrounded it under previous ownership.

The report said that the company’s weekly TV show will still be called Impact and their offices will remain in Nashville.

The Impact Wrestling Twitter account also shared The Tennessean’s story.

“We’re a global brand,” Jeff Jarrett said. “We have partnerships in Mexico, Japan, other places. Collectively coming together, we’ve combined forces and basically the rebrand final touches happen at Slammiversary.”

Anthem Executive Vice President Ed Nordholm claimed that the rebrand was necessary due to the double entendre of the old TNA name and because of negative media coverage that the promotion received.

Impact Wrestling and Global Force Wrestling had become increasingly intertwined since Jeff Jarrett returned and took charge of creative after Anthem purchased TNA. GFW titles also began appearing on Impact, with them set to merge with Impact’s belts at Slammiversary on Sunday.

Among other items from the article, it was mentioned that the new GFW is developing an on-demand streaming app for North America to make use of TNA’s video library and that they’re further working on finding their place in India and the United Kingdom.
