Daily Update: Raw ratings still bad, Adam Cole visits ESPN, Cyborg heavy

RAW RATINGS STRUGGLE CONTINUES

The last 10 weeks of RAW compared to previous years.

Coming off of last week’s historically low RAW rating, this week had a virtually identical average viewership number but with a slightly different pattern.

The show opened lower, at 2.734 million for Hour 1 and only had slight drops in the 2nd and 3rd hours, to 2.686 and 2.633 million respectively, with an average of 2.681 million for the 3hr 14 minute broadcast.

It’s notable that the first hour trailed only the July 4th episode as the lowest viewed first hour since 1997.

While RAW is often the most watched show on cable, behind football, even when it does a poor number, this week the show was 7th in viewership on the night. The three individual hours did finish 4th, 5th and 6th in the 18-49 demo on the night with 0.93, 0.91 and 0.9 ratings in that demo.

This may not even be rock bottom as next week the show will air opposite the presidential debates as well as Monday Night Football

  • Don Frye returned to Submission Radio to share his thoughts on the latest MMA news.

While Ronda Rousey seem’s to be coming back at UFC 207, Frye doesn’t believe we’ll ever see her return to the UFC. “No, she’s not coming back. She’ll never fight again.” If Rousey does come at the end of this year Don doesn’t believe she deserves a title shot “She used to be able to draw fans, now she can’t. Everybody’s seen through her. If she wants to come back, she should do her rematch against Holly Holm. And then if you beat Holly, then you can have a title match. But if you get your ass kicked like that, you don’t deserve a title match.”

A previous heavyweight fighter himself Don also discussed his disappointed in Mark Hunt’s reaction after finding out Lesnar failed his drug test after UFC 200.“I’m disappointed in Mark Hunt. I mean, he knew all this. He knew what the game was when he signed his name to fight Lesnar. He knew what was up. So for him to complain about it afterwards, it’s just… that’s just disappointing.”

  • Luke Rockhold, Tom Wright and Dan Kelly joined Submission Radio for a media scrum about UFC Melbourne November 27th at Rod Laver Arena.

If Luke is concerned about Dan Henderson possibly beating Bisping and retiring as middleweight champion, “I’d be happy for Dan if he won the title and fulfilled his career. We’ll see what happens. Dan’s a great friend of mine and I wish him the best – and I don’t wish anything for Bisping.

Dan Kelly on fighting Chris Camozzi, “There’s a guy talking a little bit of trash on Twitter named Chris Camozzi, who I wouldn’t mind having, but we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve asked for that and we’ll wait and see. He’s ranked a few spots ahead of me on a few different rankings, and yeah, that would be a good step up for me”

Tom Wright on if he has any fight announcements for UFC Melbourne, “Not right now, but before I leave for home on Thursday we’ll have some more fight announcements – but Dan (Kelly) definitely is fighting on this card, Jake (Matthews) is going to be on this card as well, and there’s a pretty good chance that Robert Whittaker will be as well. So we’re really going to have an opportunity to see a collection of the top ten middleweight fighters led by this guy (Luke Rockhold), the number-one-ranked contender.”

  • UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic returned to Submission Radio this week to discuss his UFC 203 victory, proving doubters wrong, Jon Jones, going on holiday and lots more!

Thoughts on CM Punk’s debut and if he said anything to him backstage, “Yeah, I just told him to keep your head up, man. It’s not how hard you get knocked down, it’s how you get up. He’s a great dude, he’s a real good dude. I give him all the credit in the world for training like that and going in there and doing his first fight in the UFC just like that against a tough dude like that.”

If Stipe thinks CM Punk deserved the big payday, “This is the world we live in. People want to see him fight. I mean, He should get compensated, it’s just like anything you do. Listen man, he brought a lot of pay-per-view sales, helped me out a lot (laughs). So listen, I give him a lot of credit for going out there and doing what he did, man. I praise him for that, man. It wasn’t his night, but listen, he trained and he gave it all he’s got. Unfortunately, (he lost) but he still went out there.”

  • Bill Goldberg returned to Submission Radio to celebrate episode 100, and to discuss some of the hot topics in the world of MMA.

While discussing his thoughts on the cross-promotion between the WWE/UFC, Bill shared his thoughts on McGregor trashing the WWE Roster. “I thought the funniest thing I’ve ever seen was (Randy) Orton calling him ‘Conor McDonald’. I think that is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Hey man, you have to embrace it. It’s the same crowd. One grows up and feeds into the other. You can’t tell me, and I said this before, that 75 percent of the guys wouldn’t die to be professional wrestlers that are fighting, and vice versa. We have a lot respect for each other, a lot of us train in martial arts and a lot of them walk around and act like they’re us. So the cross-promotion – Dana White is Vince McMahon in training. “

With his previous WWE opponent Brock Lesnar failing drug tests after his return at UFC 200, Goldberg explained why he’d still like to see him return for another fight to the UFC. “Absolutely, man (I want to see Brock fight in the UFC again). And I don’t even know what that thing is he took. I never broached anything along those subject matters with Brock. That’s his business. And like I said, what you just said is the second time I’ve ever heard of whatever that was, and the first time is when I read it. I don’t even know what the hell it does. But obviously, you know, if you’re cheating, then you should be reprimanded. Period. End of story. And do I think that he deserves an opportunity to go back? Absolutely.”

August 30, 1999 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWF Summerslam, Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart first match, more

Jesse Ventura’s return to pro wrestling drew the mainstream attention which probably led to a lot of curiosity buys, and WWF made the most of it putting on one of the better PPV shows of 1999.

The show on 8/22 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, was paced by five title changes out of six titles at stake, included the main belt in the main event, plus a shockingly good Shane McMahon vs. Test match which was almost unanimously the best match on the show. The show, which sold out within 90 minutes of tickets being put on sale months ago, drew 17,370 fans (announced as 19,404 on television), of which 15,973 paid $557,129 and another $168,456 in merchandise sales. It’s too early to get PPV estimates, but it was generally expected going in to be either the first or second most buys for a wrestling PPV show in history. The all-time record was approximately 800,000 buys for Wrestlemania (the real number as opposed to the announced 875,000) this year.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Raw looks to rebound off its lowest non-holiday number since 1996 last week going against football. Tonight’s game is the Chicago Bears vs. Philadelphia Eagles, which are two of the top five markets in the country. Next week would be the one that Raw will really take it on the chin unless they do a hot angle coming off Clash of Champions.

Katsuyori Shibata will be out of action for the next few weeks. He did a match Saturday with Bobby Fish and after doing so, it was announced he’s out the rest of the tour due to a spine injury. However, they didn’t take the NEVER title from him as he beat Fish. They set up a Shibata vs. Kyle O’Reilly match with New Japan’s next major show after this tour is the 10/10 show at Sumo Hall.

Two of the top developmental programs in MMA, the Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Legacy Fighting Championships, which both air on AXS TV, announced a merger today on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. The new promotion, which will run 30 Friday night shows on AXS per year with New Japan as its lead-in, will be called the Legacy Fighting Alliance. The two companies combined have placed more than 100 fighters in either UFC or Bellator.

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw, as well as more on the TNA sale with some exclusive notes, Terry Funk and talking your questions to [email protected].

WWE

  • Brandon Howard has some great research on how the first brand split affected the WWE PPV business.
  • Tickets for the 11/19 NXT Takeover show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto are on sale for American Express members right now. Other presales will start on Wednesday.
  • Among those backstage in Memphis at Raw include Luke Harper, Emma, Paige, T.J. Perkins, Brian Kendrick, Jack Gallagher (who was in Toronto over the weekend) and Rich Swann. Emma worked the Raw weekend house shows as a referee. Harper is just about ready to return if he’s not ready right now.

UFC

  • Bill Goldberg feels CM Punk should not fight again in UFC. “There’s no question he should not fight in the UFC,” Goldberg said on the 100th episode of Submission Radio. “That would be blasphemy. It would be a slap in the face to all the guys who worked their asses off to make it to prelims on Fox, on undercards and on the main event card. At the end of the day, from a promoter’s standpoint, from a competitor’s standpoint, from his standpoint, there’s no logic in him stepping in that octagon agsin. If he still has the passion for it and wants to train and compete, then yeah, lower-level shows are where he needs to be.”
He said he’s still interested in fighting for Glory. He also said he’d be doing Eric Bischoff’s podcast soon in Indianapolis this weekend, the same city Clash of Champions is in, but said right now he’s got nothing going regarding WWE but said he also has no more issues with them.
  • Bellator kickboxing has a show airing on Friday night from Budapest, Hungary:

    WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT

    PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING

Ring Rust Radio: At Death Before Dishonor, you were able to capture the ROH world title for the second time. When we spoke to you last time, you were just coming off an injury that left you sidelined for months. What was the journey from injury to champion like mentally, and now that you have the gold, was all the pain and sacrifice worth it?

Adam Cole: Well, to answer the second part of your question first, I say absolutely everything was worth it. I know this is a cliché answer, but I eat, sleep, and breathe wrestling. When I am not around wrestling, I don’t know what to do with myself. I love the entire environment, the travel, the crowd, the performance and everything. I couldn’t wait when I was injured to come back and push myself to the point of becoming the world champion again. It certainly was a mentally and physically hard road coming back from the three surgeries on my left arm and even recently when I had a bout with pneumonia and lost 17.5 pounds. It was tough, but being able to stand in that ring in Las Vegas and say that I have become the Ring of Honor world champion for a second time and getting a second chance to be with in my opinion the most prestigious title in pro wrestling is really cool.

    UFC/MMA

    • Former WCW Tag Team Champion Buff Bagwell was the latest guest on the Pancakes and Powerslams Show. He has some controversial things to say about CM Punk fighting at UFC 203, as well as details about his current lawsuit with WWE. Here are some highlights.

On not believing Samoa Joe is a big draw: “Samoa Joe, to me, I’ve never got that,” Bagwell expressed. “I know he’s very popular. I know he’s very good in the ring, I think he’s a great wrestler, I like to watch him. But when you’ve got a chance to do a storyline, to the world of wrestling fans, who’s going to be Sting’s tag team partner, and the options are Lex Luger, Marcus Bagwell, and Samoa Joe. I mean, who in the heck is Samoa Joe? And Luger wasn’t fit enough, so I fit the part perfectly.” He added, “I really don’t know where [TNA] were going with that, except maybe a push for Samoa Joe? Me and Samoa Joe haven’t spoke 10 words together. He was on one independent show with in in Cleveland, and he got mad because I was in the main event and he wasn’t. To me, Samoa Joe is a fat, out of shape guy who looks like he should not be in a wrestling ring, and I’ve not heard or seen anybody ever draw a dollar with him.”

On CM Punk not passing the “Walmart Test”: “Here’s how I look at it. If I was a promoter like Vince McMahon or Ted Turner, if I was trying to make money in the wrestling industry, I would judge it by having a person walk through Walmart. If CM Punk walked through Walmart even as popular as he is, he’s not going to get noticed as much as Hulk Hogan walking through Walmart. The reason why I say Walmart, is [because] that is our fanbase.”

NJPW Destruction in Tokyo results: Shibata vs. Bobby Fish; KUSHIDA vs. BUSHI

Here are results from this morning’s New Japan Destruction event. It’s the first of three big shows taking place over the next couple of weeks, all featuring big title matches. Tonight’s big matches are Katsuyori Shibata defending the NEVER title against Bobby Fish, and KUSHIDA defending the Jr. Heavyweight title in the main event against BUSHI.

Roppongi Vice defeated David Finlay & Henare

This was the typical young lion match you see on every opener. Henare is still pretty green and not as good as other young lions that have come up in the system, but there’s always room for improvement, especially at this stage. He took the loss after being planted by Beretta’s dudebuster. Fine match.

On New Japan World’s Twitter, he mentioned David Finlay is no longer a young lion. This makes sense as he’s changed his gear and got a win with the stunner on the last Lion’s Gate show.

Manabu Nakanishi & Yuji Nagata defeated Captain New Japan & Yoshitatsu

This was the same story as usual, with Yoshitatsu starting to grow tired of CNJ constantly losing. Both Yoshitatsu and CNJ were pretty much overwhelmed by Nakanishi. Yoshitatsu made the tag and CNJ cleared house. With YT helping him, they got rid of Nagata, but Nakanishi came back and the tide turned back to them. Nagata got the win with an exploder suplex. This was okay.

Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma & Tiger Mask defeated Jushin Liger, Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan

None of the guys really have a program at the moment so there wasn’t much here in this typical six-man NJPW tag. It’s interesting that Liger and Tiger Mask are on different teams since they usually team together. There were some cool interactions between Liger and Honma. Eventually Honma got the win for his team, pinning Liger with the top rope kokeshi.

Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto & Gedo defeated Chase Owens, Tama Tonga & Tanga Roa

This was okay. The GoD just don’t feel over at all and have stalled big time in a lot of ways here. The best moments of the match were when Goto and Tonga were in as they have really good chemistry with one another. Ishii picked up the win, drilling Roa with the brainbuster.

    Kyle O’Reilly defeated Juice Robinson

This was pretty fun. O’Reilly looks a bit bigger than usual and looked great here. Robinson went for a sunset flip but O’Reilly grabbed an arm and went for an armbar, and worked on Robinson’s arm. O’Reilly worked on him a while until Robinson cut him off and did a huge dive to the outside. O’Reilly made a comeback with the guillotine but Robinson got up, only to fall back down. O’Reilly transitioned into a leglock, then added in an armbar and Robinson submitted.

YOSHI-HASHI, Kazuchika Okada & Will Ospreay defeated Yujiro Takahashi, Kenny Omega & Bad Luck Fale

Yujiro, who was accompanied by many women continuing his transition to a lame Godfather like gimmick, did a big introduction for Omega. A lot of the focus was on Okada and Fale since they are due for a clash somewhere down the line. Ospreay was tagged in, and he and Kenny had a really fun back and forth. YOSHI-HASHI got in and traded some offense with Yujiro, eventually getting the with the pumphandle driver he calls Karma.

Fale jumped Okada after the match and tried to give him the Bad Luck Fall but was stopped before he could land it. Once the heels were cleared, YOSHI-HASHI cut a promo.

Michael Elgin, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Tetsuya Naito, EVIL & SANADA

This was another good six man. A lot of the early portion of the match was on Elgin and Naito, but Tanahashi and SANADA had some exchanges as well. Taguchi made a comeback and, for whatever reason, did the white eyes armbar like Yuji Nagata except he got cross-eyed. He eventually got trapped in the Skull End submission, and had no other alternative but to tap.

Naito destroyed Elgin’s leg after the match. I think they’ve done this in previous matches, so that might play a part in their upcoming IC title match later this month.

NEVER Champion Katsuyori Shibata defeated Bobby Fish to retain

This was really good, but not out of this world, and felt short more than anything. But, a lot of the match was pretty intense and full of hard impact spots, interesting considering how banged up Shibata is.

They start off with some pretty good mat wrestling with Shibata getting the better of it. Fish takes it outside and works on Shibata’s still taped up shoulder, including wrapping it around the barricade. Fish hit a suplex into a DDT that looked downright scary, and was dangerous (stupid?) for Shibata to take considering he nearly couldn’t compete in this match due to an already bad neck.

Shibata started to make his comeback and hit the dropkick in the corner. Fish got in a suplex, but Shibata immediately fired back with a German suplex then the penalty kick, but couldn’t get the cover. Fish went for a brainbuster but Shibata hit him with a giant headbutt, put him in a sleeper, and then got the win with the PK.

O’Reilly entered the ring and made it clear he’s next in line. Shibata responded by kicking him and they had a staredown. Shibata then cut a promo sealing the deal.

BUSHI defeated KUSHIDA to win the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title

The last few minutes were good, but a lot of this was interference and LIJ tomfoolery. It never really got going to another level, and as a main event was pretty much a disappointment. It was ok.

The mysterious Ingobernable that made his debut at the Road to Destruction event on Monday was here, again seconding BUSHI. Eventually, they made it to the outside where BUSHI trapped KUSHIDA’s arm with a chair and hit a running dropkick. BUSHI remained in control until KUSHIDA escaped from the top rope where he was draped, and laid out BUSHI.

The mysterious Ingobernable interfered but bumped into BUSHI. Then, the two accidently collided into one another. There was a ref bump that ended up with KUSHIDA getting misted. Naito strolled down to the ring and helped BUSHI connect with a tope suicida. BUSHI was going for the finish when Elgin came in and took them both out, then beat up Naito all the way to the back.

They had a big slugfest as the match resumed. KUSHIDA started to wrench the arm, then sunk in the kimura. BUSHI tried to escape, but couldn’t until he grabbed an unsuspecting KUSHIDA in a roll-up for a near fall. BUSHI countered another kimura attempt with a Canadian destroyer in a cool spot.

BUSHI eventually made his way to the top rope and hit the codebreaker, but KUSHIDA kicked out. He went for a second and hit it, covered and got the three count to win the title. After the match, BUSHI cut a promo and misted the title.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

This was fine up and down the card, but it felt like a “Road to” show until the top two matches, and neither really blew me away. This was a show where you can tell them going with the three show idea really dilutes the idea of these big shows feeling special.

WWE CWC finals results: A winner is crowned

Show starts with a highlights package narrated by Triple H looking at the final four participants.

Mauro and Bryan open the show, putting over the likes of Tiger Mask and Dynamite Kid, saying that again the cruiserweight are putting it all out there tonight. Bryan also mentions the New Japan Super J Cup tournaments of the 1990s. They go over the two semifinal matches tonight.
They show another video package where the four semifinalists talk about the significance of the tournament. Highlights are shown of all four men. All say they’re here to win.

Gran Metalik defeated Zack Sabre Jr. in the first semifinal

Very good match. Metalik is explosive but also showed off some great mat skills as well. Sabre did really well even though you’d think there would be a styles clash, but there wasn’t. The last few minutes were really great.

Gran Metalik wastes no time with a giant flying senton to the floor. Sabre catches him jumping off the apron with a kick, then kicks his arm. He focuses on Metalik’s neck, twisting his head with his feet and employing his mat-based grappling.

Metalik comes back with some fierce offense but Sabre catches him in a springboard and tries to go for a submission, but Metalik gets to the ropes. Metalik mounts his own offense, superkicking Sabre, hitting a standing shooting star press.

Sabre manages to get back in here with a guillotine choke but Metalik is able to transition to a Boston crab. Sabre cuts him off and hits a penalty kick for a near fall. Fans are getting into Sabre and not so much into Metalik at this point in the match.

Sabre Jr. locks in the octopus stretch. Metalik gets off his knees and gets to the ropes. Metalik cuts off Sabre, who gets crotched, then gives him a big hurricanrana off the top rope.

Metalik went for a dive but Sabre caught him in a triangle. Metalik escaped. Sabre charged out of the corner but walked right into the Metalik driver as Gran Metalik gets the win, advancing to the finals.
Metalik is awarded a medal by William Regal as he is interviewed, being asked about how he is preparing for the finals since he doesn’t know who his opponent is. Metalik gives a response in Spanish, but also thanks the fans.

Both TJ Perkins and Kota Ibushi are shown preparing for their match.
Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano are interviewed. When asked about his knee injury, Gargano says he’s 100% cleared and ready to rock and roll. Ciampa says no disrespect to Noam Dar or Cedric Alexander, but they only have one thing in mind – the Revival. They’re scared, that’s why they play the numbers game but they’re coming for the NXT tag team titles.

TJ Perkins defeated Kota Ibushi in the second semifinal match

Excellent match, about on par with the Alexander/Ibushi match from a few weeks ago. Just tremendous mat work and back and forth striking and wrestling. The last few minutes were insane.

They start off with some mat work early. TJP tries for a kneebar but Ibushi quickly escapes. Ibushi targets TJ Perkins with a dropkicks that sends him to the floor. Kota tries for the Golden triangle moonsault, but TJ kicks him and sends him reeling back to the floor.

After teasing a count out loss, Kota gets back in and soon after wipes out TJP with the Golden triangle moonsault. Ibushi went for a moonsault, but TJP manages to get the knees up and works on a leg submission, but not for long as Ibushi escapes.

Ibushi catches TJP on the apron with a series of kicks to the chest. He tries for the deadlift German suplex but Ibushi but TJP escapes. TJP went for something off the top rope but Kota cut him off with a big pele kick. Ibushi went for the last ride powerbomb, but TJP countered with a DDT and the dodon.

Ibushi again went for the pele kick but TJP sunk in the kneebar again.Ibushi escaped and they had a strikefest. Ibushi hit the last ride powerbomb but TJP kicked out in a big spot, since that’s been his finisher the entire time he’s been here. Fans started to chant “this is awesome”.

Ibushi went for the Phoenix splash but TJP dodged at the last minute. Ibushi came back with a ganso bomb but TJP still kicked out. Ibushi drilled him with a kick and went for the last ride powerbomb but TJP transitioned into the kneebar again. He added a crossface and after struggling, Ibushi tapped.
TJP gets the other medal. It’s he and Gran Metalik in the finals.  His goal has always been to win one, then win one more. Now he just has to win one more.

Noam Dar and Cedric Alexander talk about their match against DIY (the new tag name for Gargano and Ciampa). Dar says they just need to be on the same page for the 1-2-3. Cedric says they know they’re the best two cruisers around, and tonight they’re going to show that they are the best in the world.
Sasha Banks, Kalisto, Rich Swann, Jack Gallagher and Bayley were all shown in the crowd.

Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa defeat Cedric Alexander & Noam Dar

Crowd chanted “All these guys” as the match started. Both teams started out strong, with the highlight being Cedric wiping out Ciampa with a running senton to the floor. He looks like he’s lost even more weight since this tournament has started.

Dar is caught in the electric chair position as he’s wiped out by a Gargano superkick. When Cedric enters the right, Gargano gives him a spear through the middle rope. Cedric springs back with a giant Michinoku driver for a near fall. Great series of moves that wipes everyone out.

Action gets crazy as everyone goes 90 miles an hour. Alexander nearly got a near fall but a replay showed Ciampa just barely got his shoulder up. DIY isolate Dar and get the win with stereo superkicks
DIY motion they want the NXT tag titles after the match.

Mauro and Bryan bring in William Regal as he talks about his involvement in this tournament. He said Triple H picked him to find the best, and he exceeded their expectations. He mentions how he was trained by the likes of Rollerball Rocco and Marty Jones and saw Tiger Mask before he was Tiger Mask. He puts over the cruiserweights of the new millennium, saying they’re strikers, submission artists, grapplers and more. They bring in Corey Graves, who talks for a moment about Kota Ibushi and Brian Kendrick.

Before the main event starts, Triple H comes out and says tonight history will be made. Right now you see two of the best in the world. But we’re not looking for two – we’re looking for one, THE one. We are looking for the one will be known as the best in the world. We are looking for the one who will win the Cruiserweight Classic. But even more importantly than that, we are looking for the one who will be the new cruiserweight champion. Triple H reveals the new title and shakes both men’s hands as the match will now not only be for the trophy, but for the revitalized Cruiserweight championship…

TJ Perkins defeated Gran Metalik to become CWC Champion and the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion

Great match. Not as good as TJP/Ibushi but a really fun final match in a tournament full of fun matches. Dorada did some of his craziest stuff he has been known for in the past and TJP is probably the best all around guy that’s been signed for this division.

Fans are totally into Metalik early. The two do some good back and forth until TJP sinks in a Muta lock. Metalik gets to the ropes. TJP went to go for a springboard but Metalik dropkicks him face first on the apron then wipes him out with a tope suicida.

More fast paced back and forth until Dorada did a crazy flying hurricanrana, jumping off the ring, catching TJP on the apron and sending him out to the floor. Metalik followed with a crazy step up senton and landed flat on the floor as TJP really didn’t grab him. Ouch.

Metalik missed the standing shooting star press and TJP countered by sinking in a kneebar. Lots of back and forth action. TJP hit the dodon and sunk in the kneebar again. Dorada tried to get to the ropes but TJP dragged him back in. As Metalik tried to get to the ropes again, TJP tried to drag him back in but Metalik countered with a roll up for the near fall.

Metalik hit the Metalik Driver, but Metalik hurt the knee and took time to cover TJP, who kicked out. He made a comeback and tried to go to the top rope but Metalik cut him off and tried for the Metalik driver but TJP countered with the kneebar again. Metalik struggled and eventually submitted, making TJ Perkins the CWC champion and the new Cruiserweight champion.

Triple H put the new belt around Perkins as he went and shook hands with Metalik.

TJ says he wears a key around his keychain back to a place he couldn’t go back to, but now he is no longer is wearing it as it is a place he never has to go back to. During that time he searched for something like this, and means the world for him to inspire someone else. This is bigger than me, this is not one person. This is 32 people, all of them. Tonight, at the end of this, all of them are his heroes. This is for everyone.

    Final Thoughts:

This was a great show, filled with crazy back and forth wrestling with some terrific spots and moments up and down the card. It capped off a great tournament, showcasing athletes who can go with a presentation designed to get them over to the best of their ability. This is probably the best special WWE has put on in ages, and one can only hope that next year they do it all over again.

WWE SmackDown live results: The AJ Styles era begins

They started the show with a recap of Backlash, including AJ Styles pinning Dean Ambrose to become the new WWE champion.

AJ Styles is introduced as the new champion to a big pop.

He hates to say this, but he told you so. He did everything he said he was going to do and now he’s the face that runs this place. He is now the champ that runs the camp.

That brings out John Cena, who also gets a nice ovation, though a few people were chanting “John Cena sucks” with his song. Cena says these people all know whe he knows, that AJ has something he wants back. AJ thought he meant his armband, so he agreed and threw it at him.

Cena said no, you still have something I want, pointing at the WWE title. If he could have that belt just one more time, he’d be right there with the man, alluding to Ric Flair’s sixteen world title reigns. Cena admits AJ is now the face that runs the place, but he says that we wants to announce the sixteen time champ is here.

Dean Ambrose’s music hits as he enters the ring. He says he can handle losing a match, titles come and go but when you kicked me in the jewels you made me your enemy. He promises to make his life miserable. He’ll take the title, and take it with interest.

Cena goes face to face with Ambrose, saying he was the one who crotched AJ a few weeks ago and now he’s complaining about a low blow? Cena says Stone Cold was right, he hasn’t stepped up since becoming champion and he’s shown the WWE Universe that he has no balls. That got a big “Cena” chant.

Ambrose says he must be mistaking him with someone that gives a damn. Ambrose called Cena a lazy part timer, he should go do reality shows and the like because he can’t get it done in the ring anymore. He couldn’t even get past AJ at SummerSlam, what makes you think you can get past me?

Shane McMahon follows. He puts over everyone, including the match at Backlash. Shane mentions AJ took the easy way out, and that’s now he would have seen the WWE champion being crowned. Shane says he will get a one on one rematch at a later date.

He says at No Mercy, AJ Styles will defend the WWE championship against John Cena….AND Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match. But let’s talk about tonight. He makes a tag match with John Cena and Dean Ambrose teaming to take on AJ Styles and a partner of his choosing. McMahon mentions if AJ can’t find a partner, the General Manager (Daniel Bryan) would love nothing more than to assign him one.

The Usos defeated The Hype Bros

This didn’t last long at all. Mojo mounted a brief comeback, but Jimmy Uso superkicked him and Jey finished him off with a splash.

The Miz and Maryse came out as the announcers went over the Intercontinental title match at Backlash. Miz says for weeks people like Daniel Bryan Dolph Ziggler have been calling him a coward. You can call me a coward all you want, but I left Backlash with my beautiful wife and the Intercontinental title around my shoulder. He has made the Intercontinental title more prestigious than at any time in the titles history.

This brings out Dolph Ziggler. It’s funny as he’s selling himself as champion and trying to assure himself. But deep down inside, anytime he hears a WWE Superstar laughing at him, he knows why. They’re never going to see you as a top guy or a main eventer because the WWE Universe will never see him as a top guy. Miz said if he lived and died by the WWE Universe’s reaction, he would already be dead, much like Dolph’s career.

Dolph says he agrees, his career is at a crossroads. But he wants one more match. No gimmicks, no valets, no pneumonia or stunt doubles, no excuses – just you and me. Maryse says she wants to get this straight. She gets a lot of heat, causing Miz to tell the fans to shut up when Daniel Bryan’s music hits.

Bryan points out that Maryse was the only reason why Miz retained his title at Backlash and that Ziggler will get a rematch. Miz says no, because remember, he wants his contract renegotiated. He will not get what he wants until HE gets what HE wants. He’s calling his own shots and there’s nothing he can do about it. Miz exits through the crowd as Bryan enters the ring, ending the IC title drama in confusion.

Backstage, AJ runs into Baron Corbin, trying to recruit him to be his partner. Corbin says he’d rather be his opponent and walks off.

Baron Corbin vs. Apollo Crews never got started

Corbin destroyed him and left him for dead as he entered the ring. Suddenly, Jack Swagger’s music hits as Corbin bails. Swagger says as of 12:01 am Smackdown is his new home. “You think you know my abilities but you don’t know Jack. He’s going to be a big problem…wait, no, check that. WE are going to be a problem.”

Becky Lynch comes out to a good reaction. The journey is greater than the destination, but this destination is pretty friggin’ sweet. She is fighting woman, so come at me, bros. This brings out Naomi to start the next match, a fatal five way match to determine the number one contender for the Smackdown women’s title.

Alexa Bliss beat Naomi, Carmella, Nikki Bella and Natalya in a fatal five way match

Everyone starts off hot with Nikki getting the upper hand on everyone to start. Nikki wiped out Carmella on the floor with a clothesline off the top of the stairs. There was a spot where everyone was laid out and Bliss came in to start making pins, but Natalya came in and attacked her. Naomi mounted a comeback as Nikki came back into the picture. Naomi hit the Rear View but Nikki kicked out.

Natalya caught a sliding Naomi and blasted her head on the steel steps but Nikki wiped her out with a forearm. Bliss met her back in the ring as she was going for the Twisted Bliss but Nikki got her on her shoulders. Carmella came back with a superkick on Nikki. Bliss recovered and threw her out, then covered Nikki for the win.

Styles was still looking for a partner when he came across Kane. His response was just laughing at him and walking off.

Shane McMahon came out as the ring was set up like your normal contract signing. He reiterated that Smackdown was all about opportunity, and he wants to single one guy out – Heath Slater. Shane says go ahead, sign the contract, he’s earned it. Slater signs the contract and is officially a part of the Smackdown brand.

Slater says he wants to thank Shane, Bryan and his wife Beulah and says he’s moving into a double wide! He thanks Rhyno, saying he couldn’t think he could get it done but they did. They’ll take on anyone at any time. He also thanks his kids and starts naming them until the Ascension came out.

Konnor and Viktor says they want a title shot right now. Slater isn’t so sure about that and wants Shane to agree to agree with him. Shane says well, actually, there’s no better time than right now. They clear out the ring for the title match.

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Champions Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated The Ascension to retain

This was pretty short too, not a lot to it. Ascension dominated for a bit, but after a few minutes Rhyno gored Viktor for the win.

AJ was still backstage looking for a partner. He runs into Bryan who asks if he’s found a partner yet. AJ says he doesn’t need one. Bryan says he found a partner for him, James, one of the jobbers who Braun Strowman destroyed about a month ago. AJ left in a huff, unamused.

Randy Orton came out to address Bray Wyatt. Orton says he’s ready for a fight, so Bray if you have the balls, come down and face your fear.

Bray opted to talk in a spooky place. A wise man knows when to lay down. He gave you way out, but you didn’t. You chose to embarrass me, and I didn’t like that. He can’t stop now, Randy. Don’t sleep, Randy.

Wyatt appeared in person, outside the ring as Orton goaded him. But instead the camera jumped again and Rowan appeared, attacking Orton from behind. That didn’t last long, however, as Orton laid him out with the RKO.

They are actually pushing that James Ellsworth is teaming with AJ Styles in the main event tonight.

…Or not. As Ellsworth came out for the main event, Miz jumped him from behind, eventually laying him out with the Skull Crushing Finale. He and AJ Styles shook hands, so they are partners for tonight.

John Cena and Dean Ambrose defeated WWE Champion AJ Styles and I-C Champion The Miz

Pretty fast paced main event, all good action. AJ and Miz worked well as a team and got the upper hand on Dean at one point in the match. Dean came back and wiped out Styles on the outside with a suicide dive. Miz charged toward Cena, but Cena got Miz on his shoulders and pinned him with the AA.

Ambrose laid out Cena with the dirty deeds after the match, leading to boos from the crowd. Ambrose stared down Styles as the show ended.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

This was a very good show that set up all the big matches for No Mercy on 10/9. There wasn’t a whole lot of wrestling action in the two hours, but every segment had focus and was building towards something, which is pretty damn nice considering you don’t always get that on Monday nights.

Daily Pro Wrestling History (09/13): John Cena wins the WWE title by making Randy Orton quit

WWE Raw live results: Will Roman Reigns join the Clash of Champions main event?

    The Big Takeaway —

On an otherwise dreary show, Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns had among the best Raw matches of the year. Owens won with a Pop-Up Power Bomb after Rusev distracted Reigns. On paper, this sets up Owens vs. Seth Rollins in a singles match at Clash of Champions.

However, Rollins defied the orders of Mick Foley to not interfere in the main event, as he jumped Owens. Foley told Rollins if he interfered there would be consequences. At first, Rollins’ interference led to Owens winning by DQ, but Foley restarted the match. Also, Sasha Banks faces Charlotte for the WWE Women’s Championship at COC after she pinned Bayley in a three-way match. And Chris Jericho takes on Sami Zayn at COC.

    Show Recap —

Mick Foley was in the ring wearing a clover green undershirt. He said Clash of Champions was the 1st-ever Raw exclusive PPV. He mentioned Becky Lynch winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship, but said he believes Raw still delivers the premier institution for women’s wrestling in the world today. He brought out Charlotte and Dana Brooke.

Charlotte said she believes after last week, an apology was in order. Brooke started to say that Charlotte didn’t need to apologize to her, but Charlotte said Brooke should apologize to her. She blamed her loss to Bayley on Brooke and said she’s working to have the record books changed to pinning the loss on Brooke, who said she’s sorry. Sasha Banks walked out and said she was winning the championship tonight.

Bayley walked out and said she beat Charlotte last week, so maybe she deserves a shot at the championship. Banks told Bayley she has no friends when it comes to the women’s championship, so Bayley needs to get to the back of the line. Charlotte brought up beating Banks at SummerSlam. Banks challenged her to a fight then and there. Charlotte said Banks doesn’t get to dictate when she gets to defend her championship.

Foley said Charlotte was right, he gets to dictate when Charlotte defends the championship. Charlotte claimed that Bayley doesn’t believe that Banks deserves the championship. Brooke said Bayley and Banks should have a best-of-7 series for the championship. Charlotte shouted down Banks for interrupting. Foley arranged a Bayley vs. Banks match with the winner facing Charlotte at COC.

Charlotte, for some reason, was mad at Brooke over that announcement. Charlotte started screaming at Brooke, who slapped Charlotte. Then Foley added Brooke to the match, making it a three-way. Brooke was clearly designed to get the biggest pop after the slap.

Sasha Banks pinned Bayley in a triple threat match that also included Dana Brooke to earn a title shot at Charlotte at Clash of Champions (12:21)

Banks hit the Bank Statement on Brooke, but Bayley made the save. Then Bayley hit Brooke with the Bayley-to-Belly, but Banks broke it up with a jackknife cradle on Bayley for the pin. Brooke worked with Bayley and Banks through the first four minutes and got more offense than anyone overall. When Banks and Bayley went one-on-one, there was a pop. Then they went to a commercial. There was the obligatory Tower of Doom spot where Bayley took a superplex while Banks power bombed Brooke.

Brooke found Charlotte backstage and said she was sorry. Charlotte told her to shut up and get her bags.

The Shining Stars were backstage trying to talk R-Truth to invest in time shares in Puerto Rico. They asked for his credit card. Truth was about to give it to him with Goldust stopped him. Enzo Amore and Big Cass walked up and called them con men. Enzo told Epico they had unfinished business. Epico insulted Enzo in Spanish.

Tom Phillips interviewed Kevin Owens, who called Phillips “Tyler.” Owens wanted to know if Tyler wanted him to say something like Roman Reigns doesn’t belong in the same ring as him ever. Or that Foley is jealous of him. Owens told “Terry” there won’t be a triple-threat match at Clash of Champions and he’s walking out as Universal Champion.

Then Chris Jericho walked in and was mad that Foley pulled Owens out of appearing on the Highlight Reel. Instead, Sami Zayn will appear and he would expose the real Zayn. He would show that Zayn is a “stupid idio-it.”

Bo Dallas came out carrying a “Bo-Lieve in Bo” campaign sign. He’s dropped the motivational speaker gimmick and cut a promo in a harsher tone telling the fans “Only I can Bo-Lieve in Bo.”

Bo Dallas defeated Brandon Scott (1:12)

After Brandon Scott got a few hope spots, Dallas won with the Roll of the Dice.

Jericho and Zayn came out for the Highlight Reel. Jericho acted like he was now the best friend of the most popular guy in high school. Jericho said Zayn was the problem in the Zayn-Owens relationship. Zayn vowed to win the Universal championship, and said if Jericho really thinks Owens is his best friend, he really is a stupid idiot. Jericho said Zayn was just like the fans, a taker. Jericho is a giver, he gives people what he wants. He started to say the Gift of Jericho, but Zayn said that gift sucks.

Zayn said Owens doesn’t care about Jericho, doesn’t care about the fans, he only cares about Kevin Owens. Jericho said Zayn was jealous that Owens was the longest reigning Universal champion in history, and Zayn was just Zayn. It led to Zayn saying he and Owens traveled the world trying to be like Jericho, Dean Malenko and Eddy Guerrero. He said Jericho was a 6-time world champion, but now he’s been relegated to being Owens’ bitch.

Jericho said he got a text from Owens before the segment started. He started to show Zayn the text message, but cracked Zayn upside the head with his cell phone, then hit the Codebreaker. Foley later ordered a match between Jericho and Zayn at Clash of Champions.

Cesaro defeated Sheamus in Match 5 of their best of seven series. Sheamus leads the series 3-2. (9:58)

Cesaro won after a schoolboy cradle while using the ropes. Sheamus worked over Cesaro’s back with the Irish Curse and a Cloverleaf. Back and forth match where Cesaro escaped the High Cross before the finish.

Foley talked with Seth Rollins backstage. Rollins didn’t understand why Foley gave Reigns a chance at getting in the main event of Clash of Champions. Foley said Reigns was wrong at the Fatal Four Way every bit as much as Rollins. Rollins wanted to see Stephanie. Foley said Stephanie was in Singapore and she didn’t care who the champion was. The only wins and losses she cared about was Raw vs. SmackDown.

Rollins said that was the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard and claimed Foley was in her pocket, then teased interfering in the main event tonight. Foley got upset at Rollins and warned him not to get involved. Rollins said if Foley thought Reigns was on the same level as Rollins, then Foley was just a fool.

Nia Jax defeated Alicia Fox via referee stoppage (1:46)

Nia Jax did a pre-match interview saying she doesn’t do crazy and she would tear Alicia Fox apart. She swung Fox against the hair outside the ring into the barricade left and right like she was swinging a baseball bat. Then Jax speared Fox through the bellkeeper’s table. Fox was motionless. The match simply ended while Jax looked menacingly down at Fox. As Jax left, she got a surprising amount of cheers.

New Day came out. Big E.’s new gimmick is has Booty-Os cereal in his boots and pours them out to fans holding out bowls at ringside. Xavier Woods talked about the ill-fated Old Day segment by Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows. Woods told Anderson and Gallows that entertainment was the New Day’s thing, so “Don’t mess with our thing.”

Kofi Kingston said the segment lasted 5:37. Big E. said fans could have poured themselves a big bowl of Booty-Os in 5:37. Woods apologized for Anderson and Gallows wasting their time and dumping it into a cannister of fire.

Anderson and Gallows showed up. Anderson said New Day wore unicorn horns, sang dumb songs and they accused them of wasting people’s time?

Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson defeated Raw Tag Team Champions The New Day in a non-title match (9:53)

Anderson pinned Woods with the Magic Killer. Woods did an impressive Randy Savage Elbow on Anderson from three-quarters of the way across the ring. Gallows knocked Kingston out of the ring with a big boot to lead to the finish. More of a showcase for Anderson and Gallows as they worked over Kingston for the heat.

Reigns did a backstage interview with Phillips. He said the only thing in his mind right now was getting to Clash of Champions. They only way to do that was kicking Owens’ ass.

Michael Cole, Byron Saxton and Corey Graves built up the crusierweights will debut next week.

Jinder Mahal is now billed as “the man who comes in peace.” He did a pre-match promo saying during his absence, he felt hatred towards everything and everyone. But he’s learned to let all that go. He’s spent time in the monasteries and found peace, then tried to get the fans to chant peace.

Jinder Mahal defeated Jack Swagger (3:18)

Mahal won with a neckbreaker after getting the knees up on a Swagger bomb. Not much to it.

Phillips approached Swagger backstage. He said that it’s no secret that Swagger’s contract expires soon and what he was planning to do. Swagger just glared at Phillips and walked off.

Enzo and Cass came out. Enzo said “Eskimo Zo”  wasn’t sweating Epico. The Shining Stars are now handing out brochures to fans trying to sell time shares. They’re almost doing Chavo Guerrero’s Amway Salesman gimmick from 1999 Russo-era Nitro. Who could turn down that license to print money?

    Primo defeated Enzo Amore (3:18)

Enzo did a tope on Epico after Cass gave Primo a big boot in a spot that developed at half the speed of smell. Enzo tried to suplex Epico back in, but Primo tripped Enzo and held his leg in the finish.

Rollins approached Ownes backstage. Rollins told Owens he hoped Owens won tonight against Reigns. Rollins said since HHH was too much of a coward to show his face tonight, he couldn’t think of anything better than beat up his golden boy. Owens mentioned that Rollins always had someone else doing his fighting for him, whether it was HHH, J&J Security, or Kane.

Owens said ever since Rollins returned from his injury, he’s done nothing but fail. He’s lost to Dean Ambrose, lost to Finn Balor, and lost to Owens. He said Rollins slogan of “Redesign, Rebuild, Reclaim” was more like “Redesign, Rebuild, Replaced.”

Foley walked up and told Owens that was enough. Then he told Rollins he knew what Rollins was thinking, but ordered Rollins not to interfere in the match or else there would be consequences.

WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens defeated Roman Reigns in a non-title match (21:39)

Originally, Rollins ran out and jumped Owens at 13:11, leading to Owens being declared the winner by DQ. Foley, Fit Finley and several other agents forced Rollins to the back, but a furious Foley screamed at Rollins to go into his office immediately because he disobeyed his orders. Then Foley restarted the match.

What unfolded was among the best Raw matches of the year. Reigns tried a superplex, but Owens turned it into the old ROH Go Home Drive for a near fall. Then Owens came back with a Frog Splash for another good two count. Owens missed a cannonball, Reigns went for a spear, Owens blocked it with a kick, but Reigns hit the Superman Punch for one of those great near falls where some of the fans cheer because they thought it was a three count.

Reigns caught a Drive-by outside the ring. Owens hit a superkick on Reigns, followed by two Cannonballs. Owens went for the Pop-Up Power Bomb, but Reigns escaped out the back door and rolled Owens into a School Boy Power Bomb, but Owens got out. Reigns called for the Spear, but Rusev ran out to distract Reigns, who gave Rusev a Superman Punch. But Owens ran up from behind and gave Reigns the Pop Up Power Bomb for the pin.

Post-match, Reigns punished Reigns with a thrust kick. Lana came out on the ramp and ordered Rusev to give him the Accolade, which he did. There were a few fans chanting “Rusev.” The show ended without Foley explaining what consequences awaited Rollins.

    MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Vince McMahon was injured recently. WWE has confirmed that McMahon did get injured and in fact had surgery, but the nature of the injury and surgery are still unknown. The story going around in the company is Vince suffered a torn quad while squatting.

Alberto Del Rio did an interview with Mas Luchas claiming that he failed the WWE drug test because he was using legally prescribed testosterone replacement therapy. It’s not exactly a secret that WWE had banned all TRT usage years ago but may have amended that, but even when amended, even if prescribed by a doctor it has to be approved by the WWE’s own medical staff.  He also said that Andrade Cien Almas wasn’t happy and wants to return to Mexico. He said the problem is that when you go from Mexico to WWE you have to learn English and also start from scratch and forget everything you know. He said Almas asked him if things get better when you make the main roster, and he said he told him that things get worse.

Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. was announced today for the debut of the Lucha Ilimitado promotion on 10/12 in Yakima, WA at the Sun Dome. The promotion has said they would announce Mysterio’s opponent today. Tickets are available eat TicketWest outlets.

Sad to report the death of 70s star Stan Mykietowich, better known as Moose Morowski. He toured all over North America, being big in places like Canada and West Texas. Morowski was 81 years old.

Daily Pro Wrestling History (09/12): WCW Fall Brawl

WWE Backlash live results: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles

They set up a pre-show match between Apollo Crews and Baron Corbin backstage. This promo in general was really bad between Corbin sounding as wooden as ever and Crews, after Corbin said something about a spelling bee, said he’d kick his A-S-S.

Orton/Wyatt is still being promoted in the pre-show.

    Baron Corbin defeated Apollo Crews

Typical WWE style match, a bit quicker than usual. Not bad. Corbin got the heat, but Crews cut him off and started building towards a comeback but Corbin laid him out with an STO. Corbin missed a splash and Crews countered with an Angle slam. Crews kicked out of the deep six. Corbin missed a charge on the outside and hit the steps.

Crews hit a Samoan drop on the outside, rolled him in but when going to the top rope for a move Corbin rolled out of the way. Crews was going for punches on the top rope when Corbin struck him with a knee, and while Crews was recoiling walked right into the End of Days and was pinned.

They started off the PPV with a nice 9/11 tribute.

Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan came down to the ring to open the PPV. Shane thanked the fans and says it’s all about the WWE Superstars on SmackDown getting an opportunity. They run down the big title matches for tonight, then said the women’s title match would start now.

SmackDown Women’s Championship, Six Pack Challenge: Becky Lynch defeated Carmella, Natalya, Nikki Bella, Alexa Bliss and Naomi to become the first champion

Pretty good match. It was sloppy in parts, but everyone got to shine and looked good for what this match was. They pushed Nikki Bella and Carmella as the focal point of the match as they teased interactions with one another early on and reiterated Carmella’s heel turn in the last few weeks. Everyone was given a chance to hit some good looking spots. They did the tower of doom spot with Natalya powerbombing Nikki while suplexing Carmella. Naomi did a big springboard crossbody spot that wiped out everyone.

Assisted by Natalya, Naomi hit a blockbuster to eliminate Alexa Bliss. Not too long after that. Naomi went for a springboard but Nikki blasted her with a forearm and Natalya submitted her with the sharpshooter. Nikki hit Natalya with the forearm and pinned her, but right after she did Carmella did a sneaky roll up to eliminate her, leaving it between Carmella and Becky Lynch.

Carmella was aggressive, but Lynch trapped her in the disarmed her out of nowhere and Carmella submitted leaving Becky Lynch the winner and first SmackDown women’s champion.

Becky was interviewed after the match, with fans chanting “you deserve it”. You have believed in me in every step of the way, thank you. This is for every time there was a poster, or when you sang my song. She thanked the fans once more as her music played again.

Miz was backstage when he came across Nickelodeon star Jagger Eaton’s dressing room. The punchline was that he’d love to have Miz on his show, unless they can get John Cena. Miz got mad but had the door shut in his face before he could do anything.

Bray Wyatt was shown destroying Orton’s leg backstage, repeatedly slamming it on a door, then walked away. So there’s your storyline reason if the match doesn’t happen.

The Usos defeated The Hype Bros. to advance to the finals

This was fine, but not really much to talk about. As heels, Usos lose some of their hot moves and the Hype Bros. are just there. Usos have a brand new look, ditching the paint and colorful gear for black tights. Usos stalled a bit, but eventually got control after posting Zack shoulder first into the turnbuckle. Mojo hit the press slam as he and Ryder were going for their finish but one of the Usos took out Mojo. He got thrown into the barricade as Ryder hit the broski boot but the other Uso stopped his momentum as he leg was chopped. One of the Usos grapevined the arm and sunk in a Boston crab, the move that put Chad Gable out, and submitted Ryder.

Heath Slater and Rhyno were interviewed backstage. He said nothing will stop a Rhyno, that’s how good he was feeling. He then left, thinking that the interview was over, then came back. Heath said he had something going on in his stomach and asked if Rhyno was alright. Rhyno said we’re still live. Heath then joked, saying that he’s been swerved. Heath then acted like he pooped his pants. Always fun when the primary directive of your show is about humoring one person, leaving the rest to question why you do things like this when it almost never gets a reaction.

Miz is with Daniel Bryan backstage where we says he wants to renegotiate his contract. After he retains his championship tonight, it’ll make things more tougher so go back to your little cubby hole where I do what you can’t do anymore.

The Miz defeated Dolph Ziggler to retain the WWE Intercontinental title

Lame finish to what was a good back and forth match. Miz looked way better here than he has in the past.

Miz catapulted Ziggler to the outside and worked on him for a lot of the match. Just to show you how volatile WWE’s thinking is, they’ve gone from completely separating Daniel Bryan and Miz to making it the focal point of the match between he and Ziggler, with Miz taunting Bryan and even doing a yes chant at one point. Ziggler started to make the comeback. Miz hit a cool springboard powerbomb for a near fall. Miz works on Ziggler’s leg but Ziggler fires back with a famouser.

Ziggler locks in a sleeper but Miz runs Ziggler’s head into the turnbuckle. Ziggler went for a superkick but Miz blocked hit, hit a standing DDT and locked in the figure four. Ziggler gets to the ropes but Miz hones in right back on the leg. Ziggler hit a superkick out of nowhere but Miz got his foot on the ropes.

Maryse distracted Ziggler as they did back and forth roll ups. Ziggler made it to the ropes where Maryse sprayed him with what I guess was perfume or something, which allowed Miz to hit a distracted Ziggler with the Skull Crushing Finale for the win. So that makes it the upteenth time Ziggler has lost the big one. He’s kind of like a reverse Tomoaki Honma at this point as the more he loses, the less over he gets.

Bray Wyatt came out for the match, but a person at ringside handed a note to the announcer. He announced that Randy Orton could not be cleared tonight, and that Wyatt has demanded the referee to count to ten to officially make it a forfeit. The referee counted to ten and Wyatt was awarded the win.

BUT WAIT! The announcer says instead, Bray Wyatt will compete in a no holds barred match against this man….and this man was none other than Kane. Why is it a No Holds Barred match? And who wrote the note, Wyatt? Shane McMahon? Daniel Bryan? Wait, sorry, I thought about this for more than ten seconds.

Kane defeated Bray Wyatt in a No Holds Barred match

Okay brawl of a match. They didn’t do anything excessive and was perfectly safe aside from the few normal bumps this match entails.

They brawled around ringside to start, then entered the ring. Wyatt got a chair and pummeled Kane with shots. Wyatt went for the Sister Abigail on the chair but Kane powered out and dragged him back outside. Wyatt came back with a clothesline, laying out Kane. He put him on the announce table and hit a running splash, sending him through it.

Wyatt threw him back in the ring and hit the Sister Abigail but Kane countered with a chokeslam. Wyatt came back with a chokeslam of his own on the chair or a near fall. Suddenly, Orton emerged, his foot all wrapped up. He took out Wyatt with the RKO, which allowed Kane to get the win after the chokeslam.

AJ Styles was backstage when he came across two indie guys. He says you guys know my story. You guys are destined for failure, don’t let it bother you. You can say you met him, the face that runs the place, the Phenomenal AJ Styles became WWE World Champion.

Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated The Usos to become the first SmackDown Tag Team champions

Most of this match was pretty boring, but once Rhyno got the tag things picked up a bit.

Usos focused on Slater, isolating him from Rhyno. With them as heels, Usos are really just there, losing the flash they had as babyfaces. After what feels like forever, Slater collides into his opponent and they both make the tag. Rhyno runs wild and goes for the Gore but is pushed head first into the turnbuckle.

Slater hits neckbreakers on both Usos and hits a lifting DDT for a near fall. Jimmy Uso hits a superkick on Slater but walks into a Gore by Rhyno and Slater gets the pin. So Heath is not only employed, but also one half of the tag team champions.

The new champions are interviewed. Heath said this is one of the biggest nights of his life, next to a couple of his kids being born. He finishes the interview saying “BEULAH, WE’RE GETTING A DOUBLE WIDE BABY!”

AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose to win the WWE World championship

Pretty damn great main event. Really picked up during the second portion of the match with some good submission work and some crazy spots near the end.

Things started out tepidly as they did some brief back and forth. Styles exited the ring as Ambrose teased doing something, but AJ slid under Ambrose and sent him neck first to the middle rope, giving him control. Ambrose tried to rally a comeback, but Styles came back, only to miss a splash.

Ambrose tried to do something, but something seemed lost in communication as Styles was suplexed and landed chest first while Ambrose also fell hard. Some more back and forth. Styles tried to hook in the calf crusher but Styles countered and suplexed him into the turnbuckle.

Both men teased their finishes, but neither got it. Styles got Ambrose’s knee and started working on it. Styles got the calf crusher in but Ambrose made it to the ropes. He sunk it in again but Ambrose grabbed his head and smashed it  to the floor repeatedly, freeing him.

Styles went for the Styles Clash but Ambrose managed to make it to the apron. Styles grabbed him but Ambrose countered and slingshotted him into the turnbuckle shoulder first. They make it back to the ring where Styles comes back with a flurry of offense. Styles hit the springboard 450 but Ambrose kicked out.

Ambrose made a comeback, dropkicking AJ through the ropes to the floor. Ambrose continued flinging him around like a ragdoll, throwing him into the announcers table then through the barricade. Ambrose took out Styles with a running clothesline as they brawled throughout the crowd.

They made it back to the ring where Ambrose went for the Dirty Deeds, but AJ pushed Ambrose into the ref. Seeing that the referee was down, Styles immediately low blowed Ambrose and hit the Styles Clash to pin Ambrose and win the title.

EVOLVE 69 recap: Johnny Gargano says farewell, Matt Riddle picks up the torch

EVOLVE Wrestling couldn’t have asked for a better face of the company to lead them into independent prominence than Johnny Gargano.

Gargano is excellent inside of the ring, but it’s his innate likability and charisma that makes him a truly special professional wrestler. He’s someone who is able to convey the emotion of every moment to the audience. Gargano has been steadily improving to get to the point where he can genuinely be called one of the best wrestlers in the world, and fans have seen that in both NXT and the Cruiserweight Classic.

Gargano’s undeniable heart and passion have been on full display in WWE recently, but it’s EVOLVE and the independent promotions that he’s worked for that have shaped Gargano into a competitor capable of those performances. And it has been obvious even only through watching his path to the summit of pro wrestling that Gargano’s tireless work ethic is a major reason that he’s gotten this far.

Sunday night was Gargano’s final appearance in an EVOLVE ring. He teamed with Cody Rhodes (who was billed only as Cody) to defeat Drew Galloway and Chris Hero in a tag team match in the main event of EVOLVE 69. Gargano locked in the Gargano Escape on Hero and forced him to tap out after Rhodes prevented Galloway from breaking up the submission.

There was a fairly bothersome stream issue during the match, but it seemed to be a solid main event. Gargano and Rhodes did stereo dives to the outside during the match and teed off on their opponents with double superkicks.

After the match, Rhodes cut a brief promo and left Gargano in the ring to say goodbye to the crowd. But Gargano didn’t get the opportunity to give a farewell speech.

Ethan Page attacked Gargano and attempted to prevent him from leaving EVOLVE on a positive note. Page had been trying to gain Gargano’s trust again after turning on him in the past, but revealed that it was all for show during the attack. Page brought out two massive gatekeepers (a tag team known as Devastation Corp) and laid out Gargano with a package piledriver.

Page and the gatekeepers went to the back, but not before Page invited anyone else who wanted to ruin Gargano’s final moments in EVOLVE to come down to the ring. Galloway and DUSTIN took Page up on his offer, burying Gargano under an EVOLVE banner. And after Galloway attempted to recruit Matt Riddle to his crusade against the company and away from his Catch Point partners at EVOLVE 68, Riddle joined Galloway and DUSTIN in the ring.

But Riddle didn’t give in. He faked shaking Galloway’s hand, but instead laid him out with a kick to the head. He took out DUSTIN before helping Gargano to his feet. And Gargano kissed the EVOLVE banner before getting back on the mic.

If the implications weren’t already clear, Gargano pointed to Riddle as the next person who would carry the company before exiting the ring and leaving Riddle alone to bask in the spotlight. Riddle declared that “EVOLVE is bro, bro.”

EVOLVE will surely miss Johnny Gargano, but they once again fortuitously find themselves with one of the best pro wrestlers in the world as the ace of the company. Riddle is equally as special as Gargano, though in different ways. I’m sure that he works just as hard, but wrestling feels effortless to Riddle. It shouldn’t be possible that someone is as good as he is only one year into their career.

In that year, Riddle has developed an almost inhuman feel for the business and the little things that go along with being a great pro wrestler. He has a natural cocky demeanor that could make him a great heel, but he’s so likable and has so much charisma that there isn’t a better choice to be the next face of the company.

Riddle wrestled earlier in the night against TJ Perkins in an excellent match. It peaked near the end with an insane sequence of counters that resulted in Riddle locking on the Bromission for the tap out win.

And with EVOLVE co-founder Gabe Sapolsky coming out to appreciate the moment after the match, Perkins also bid farewell to EVOLVE before he heads to WWE.

In the match of the night, Ricochet defeated Zack Sabre Jr. after connecting with a 630. Their styles meshed well and the result was a borderline contender for the EVOLVE match of the year. At one point, Ricochet attempted a shooting star press, got caught in a triangle choke, but powered his way up to hit Sabre with a one-armed powerbomb.

The night began with a series of new talent showcase matches. Darby Allin earned an EVOLVE contract in the opener after getting a surprise win over Tony Nese. Allin jumped backwards off the top and got caught by Nese, but he transitioned it into a jackknife cradle to pick up the victory. Joey Styles presented him with the contract after the match.

In the second new talent showcase match of the night, Fred Yehi stopped Travis “Flip” Gordon from earning an EVOLVE contract after smoothly transitioning a springboard lariat attempt into a Koji Clutch for the submission win. And Ethan Page fought off a tough challenge from David Starr, who looked good in the match, and got the win with a package piledriver.

The final showcase match of the night saw “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams defeat Chuck O’Neil. Galloway and DUSTIN laid out Williams after the match and attacked his leg with a chair. Williams’ Catch Point friends made the save, though they were without Riddle and Perkins. That led to DUSTIN getting a win over Drew Gulak with help from Galloway in the next match.

Gulak later confronted Riddle and TJP about not being there when Catch Point needed them.

    Final thoughts:

The stream problems in the main event were a speed bump, but EVOLVE 69 is definitely worth going out of your way to see. The Ricochet vs. Sabre match was fantastic and Riddle vs. TJP wasn’t too far off. The new talent showcase matches were fun and added some flavor to the undercard. And the main event angle closed the book on Johnny Gargano’s run as the ace of EVOLVE and set up Matt Riddle to run with the torch.

    EVOLVE 69 results:

    • Johnny Gargano & Cody Rhodes defeated Drew Galloway & Chris Hero
    • Ricochet defeated Zack Sabre Jr.
    • Matt Riddle defeated TJP
