Former NFL and XFL player Scooby Wright attends WWE tryout

Former Arizona Cardinal linebacker Scooby Wright attended a WWE tryout this week.

According to a report from TMZ, Wright was one of more than 30 athletes to take part in tryouts held on November 30 and December 1 from the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. However, it’s not known if WWE executives were impressed with the 28-year-old’s performance or if he’s in the running to be offered a contract.

Wright earned the nickname “Sharkdawg” during the 2022 USFL season. He told Fox Sports that a combination of the two species is his spirit animal.

“I had to go Shark-Dog on them. Half shark, half dog. It’s my spirit animal,” Wright said from the sidelines.

Philip Anthony “Scooby” Wright III played two full seasons at the University of Arizona in 2013-14. He only played in three games during his junior year in 2015, however, due to injury. Wright was then selected by the Cleveland Browns in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was later signed off the Browns practice squad by the Arizona Cardinals that December. Wright would play 13 games across two seasons with the Cardinals before being waived in 2018.

He played four games for the DC Defenders during the 2020 XFL season before the league shut down. Wright then won the 2022 USFL Championship with the Birmingham Stallions. He had a pick-six interception with three minutes left in the fourth quarter of the championship game to put the Stallions in the lead.

WWE hosting two-day tryout at IMG Academy this week

WWE has announced its next tryout for college athletes.

As first revealed by SI.com, 30-35 athletes will be taking part in a two-day tryout on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The event will be held at IMG Academy, a state-of-the-art facility located in Bradenton, Florida. The 600-acre boarding school campus serves as a training ground for professional and amateur sports teams as well as sports camps.

The tryouts will be the third such event WWE has held this year. 18 athletes were offered developmental contracts following tryouts in Dallas during WrestleMania week and another 15 were offered deals from tryouts in Nashville when the company was in town for SummerSlam.

WWE has another tryout scheduled for Lagos, Nigeria in February titled “The Search for Africa’s Next WWE Superstar.” Tryouts in Los Angeles are expected to take place during the week of WrestleMania 39 as well.

“There are countless examples of top talent that came into the business via college sports, but there hasn’t always been a system built out,” said WWE’s head of talent operations and strategy James Kimball. “That’s what we’re trying to create here, a true talent development pathway into WWE for college athletes.”

“We want a clear calendar,” Kimball continued. “Moving forward, we’re going to emulate what we’ve done in 2022. It’s really important there is a clear schedule, as college athletes have so many options. For wrestlers on the independents, that system is in place and that pathway to WWE is well known, so our resources are allocated to building a new pathway to collegiate sports.

“We’re just scratching the surface. We’ve been working on this for a year, and it’s going to take years, but we’re growing. We’re adding quality and depth, and the work is just starting with college athletes nationwide.”

Big E will once again be present for the tryouts, as he was in Nashville this summer.

“E is such a critical part of what we’re doing,” Kimball said of the former WWE Champion’s participation. “This recruitment strategy is really hitting home for him, and it’s something we should have had when he was a collegiate student-athlete at Iowa. He’s such a great ambassador, and he can relate to these athletes. He’s presenting with shared experience—that goes a long way.”

WWE unveils new class of Performance Center recruits

WWE has unveiled their newest class of Performance Center recruits.

In a video released Wednesday, WWE announced the signing of fourteen talents from their SummerSlam tryout in Nashville, Tennessee on July 29.

The video captured the moments where Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE’s executive vice president of talent relations, offered contracts to the 14 recruits.

The video was short on details regarding the backgrounds of the new recruits, but did note that signees Alivia Ash and Harleigh White are former ACC track athletes.

The signees are as follows:

  • Kennedy Cummins
  • Gabrielle Dunn
  • Rickssen Opont
  • Alivia Ash
  • Harleigh White
  • Chukwusom Enekwechi
  • Jade Gentile
  • Anna Keefer
  • Breanna Ruggiero
  • Beau Morris
  • Franki Strefling
  • Hayden Pittman
  • Lea Mitchell
  • Kevin Ventura-Cortes

Dave Meltzer reported in the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter that around 50 athletes from 47 colleges took part in the tryout, with no standouts in the bunch.

“At the Nashville tryouts, where they said they had 50 athletes from 47 colleges, since most had never been in the ring, nobody really stood out. One person noted that nobody stood out immediately like a future superstar and that this may be the last tryout only using college athletes as they think they will revert back to wanting independent wrestlers with experience again combined with recruiting of athletes. They did sign 14 of the 50 to contracts. There were a few concussions and shoulder injuries and more injuries possibly then any tryout ever due to the in-ring inexperience.”

The video announcing the new recruiting class can be seen below.

WWE.com posted an article about Shirai trying out that has since been taken down.

It has been known for a while that Shirai, one of the top wrestlers in the Stardom promotion in Japan, was on WWE’s radar. Dave Meltzer reported in the October 31st, 2016 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that both she and fellow Stardom star Kairi Hojo had been offered deals to start with WWE in 2017.

It was later reported that both had decided to stay. However, in last week’s Observer, Meltzer wrote that Hojo had signed a three-year contract with WWE, telling Stardom she was leaving in April. He also noted that Shirai was reconsidering coming in as well.

Other names at this week’s tryouts are:

  • Ingrid “Kira” Hogtun and Kamilla “Natasja” Tjöstland (independent wrestlers from Norway)
  • Delilah Doom (Texas-based independent wrestler)
  • Chik Tormenta (independent wrestler from Mexico)
  • Katsiaryna Kavaleva (championship kickboxer/MMA fighter from Belarus)
  • Jaime Espinal (Dominican-born Olympic freestyle wrestler that represented Puerto Rico in 2012)
  • Wes Brisco (former FCW developmental talent, son of Gerald Brisco and nephew of Jack Brisco)
