WWE & Peacock announce ‘WrestleMania IX: Becoming a Spectacle’ documentary

Before WrestleMania returns to Las Vegas, WWE is taking a look back at the first time Sin City hosted the event.

It was announced today that a new documentary focused on WrestleMania IX will debut exclusively on Peacock on Friday, April 11. Titled “WrestleMania IX: Becoming a Spectacle,” the documentary features behind-the-scenes footage from the 1993 event.

The trailer for the documentary can be seen below. It includes interviews with Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Bruce Prichard, Sam Roberts, and former WWE executive Basil DeVito.

With extravagant toga party theming, Caesars Palace played host to WrestleMania IX. The theme was a highlight, but the show is probably most remembered for its underwhelming card and controversial finish. Instead of Hart winning the WWF Championship from Yokozuna, Hogan — who had recently returned to the company after a year away — defeated Yokozuna for the belt in an impromptu main event. That controversy is one of the focuses of this documentary.

Las Vegas will host WrestleMania for the second time when WrestleMania 41 is held at Allegiant Stadium later this month (Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20).

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event returning this December, will air on NBC & Peacock

WWE has officially confirmed the return of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Airing live on both NBC and Peacock, Saturday Night’s Main Event will make its return on December 14. The special is taking place from the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York with a start time of 8 p.m. Eastern. No matches have been announced yet.

Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Liv Morgan, Bianca Belair, and Seth Rollins are included on WWE’s graphic for the show.

Nassau Coliseum also hosted the first-ever Saturday Night’s Main Event in 1985, which featured Hulk Hogan facing off against Bob Orton. The show’s original run lasted from 1985-1992 before making a brief return from 2006-2008.

Saturday Night’s Main Event is now back as a quarterly special as part of WWE and NBCUniversal’s new five-year deal for SmackDown. SmackDown returned to USA Network last Friday after completing its run on Fox.

Tickets for the December 14 Saturday Night’s Main Event are going on sale to the general public this Friday (September 20). A pre-sale will begin on Thursday (September 19).

WWE has released a retro-style video promoting the show:

Cody Rhodes WWE American Nightmare documentary to premiere this month

A new documentary chronicling Cody Rhodes’ return to WWE is coming to Peacock later this month.

Peacock announced today that “WWE American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes” will begin streaming on Monday, July 31. The documentary is two hours long. It’s narrated by “Heels” and “Arrow” star Stephen Amell.

The trailer and synopsis for the documentary can be seen below:

Cody Rhodes grew up living in the shadow of his father, WWE Hall of Famer ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes. In 2016, Cody risked it all by leaving WWE to make a name for himself, becoming the ‘American Nightmare.’ This intimate and revealing documentary follows Cody’s journey away from the WWE, and his return at WrestleMania 38 last year, as he chases the dream of winning the WWE championship, the one title his father was never able to claim. Through never-before-seen footage & unprecedented access, this Peacock Original illustrates the transformation of a man who is blazing a new trail in sports entertainment.

The trailer includes interviews with Rhodes, The Undertaker, Rhodes’ sister Teil, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, Ric Flair, Brandi Rhodes, and Kevin Owens.

After departing AEW, Rhodes made his return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 in 2022. His comeback was briefly derailed by a torn pec that he suffered that June, but Rhodes returned to the ring in time to win the men’s Royal Rumble match this January. Rhodes went on to unsuccessfully challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39.

Rhodes is currently feuding with Brock Lesnar in WWE. With Rhodes and Lesnar having a 1-1 record against each other, it’s expected that they’ll settle their rivalry at SummerSlam. Lesnar will be on Raw tonight to respond to Rhodes’ SummerSlam challenge.

Amell, who is friends with Rhodes, has stated that he’ll be in attendance at tonight’s Raw.

WWE & Peacock’s Ric Flair documentary nominated for Sports Emmy Award

WWE and Peacock’s “Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair” documentary is in the running for a Sports Emmy Award.

The Flair documentary is one of five nominees in the Outstanding Long Documentary category at the 44th Annual Sports Emmy Awards. The full list of nominees was revealed on Tuesday.

“After Jackie” from the History Channel, “Citizen Ashe” from CNN, “NYC Point Gods” from Showtime, and “The Redeem Team” from Netflix are the four other documentaries nominated in the category.

WWE touted that this is the first time in company history that they have been nominated for a Sports Emmy.

The Flair documentary premiered on Peacock in December 2022. The synopsis for it can be seen below:

16-time World Champion and 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair is one of the most prolific and controversial superstars in professional wrestling history. Flair is a true American icon: from his famous ‘Woooo’ that is still heard in stadiums and arenas throughout the US, to his influence on hip hop music. At 73 years-old Flair remains a constant in American pop culture, but who is the real man behind the outrageous persona? Finally, Flair reveals all, opening up about his storied career, inside and outside of the ring, over the last 50 years. Hulk Hogan, Mike Tyson, Post Malone, Stephen A. Smith, and Charlotte Flair are among those who join Flair in telling the tale of the man behind ‘The Man.’

Flair tweeted today: “Wow, It’s Such An Honor To Receive This @sportsemmys Nomination For Best Long Documentary! Thank You @WWE For The Opportunity To Share My Life With The World Through Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair!”

The Sports Emmy Awards ceremony is taking place in New York City on Monday, May 22. They’re separate from the Primetime Emmy Awards, which are traditionally held in September.

‘WWE Evil’ docuseries coming to Peacock later this month

A new WWE docuseries is coming to Peacock later this month.

“WWE Evil” will be available to stream on Peacock on Thursday, March 24. The eight-episode series will feature episodes on “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan, The Miz, Sasha Banks, The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane), Randy Orton, Stephanie McMahon, Ric Flair, and Roman Reigns.

WWE Evil was first announced as being in development by Peacock last May. John Cena is the creator of the show, along with serving as its narrator and being an executive producer.

“Each one-hour episode of this psychological exposé dives deep into a single infamous heel, unveiling rare behind-the-scenes details from some of the biggest names in the industry,” Peacock wrote. “These ‘evildoers’ undeniably shaped pop culture through the decades, making a tremendous nostalgic impact that bled into mainstream culture today.”

WWE Evil is Peacock’s first WWE original series. Peacock became the exclusive home of the WWE Network in the United States in 2021.

All eight episodes of WWE Evil will be available on March 24. The series is co-produced by WWE Studios and Bunim Murray Productions.

“As Peacock continues to expand its WWE programming, we are thrilled to bring the new original series ‘WWE Evil’ to platform, working with the one and only John Cena,” said Benny Reuven, Vice President of Entertainment Unscripted Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “There is no one better to take viewers into the minds of WWE’s fiercest villains than Cena himself. We can’t wait for WWE fans to devour this series.”

The trailer for WWE Evil is available to watch below:

Jeff Hardy to appear on WWE’s Broken Skull Sessions

A new episode of Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions will be premiering this Thanksgiving.

On WWE’s The Bump this morning, it was announced that Jeff Hardy will be Steve Austin’s guest on this month’s edition of Broken Skull Sessions. The episode will be uploaded to Peacock/WWE Network on Thursday, November 25.

Hardy changed brands in the WWE Draft last month, joining the SmackDown roster. He was involved in a feud with Austin Theory on Raw before officially moving to SmackDown.

Seth Rollins was interviewed by Austin on the most recent Broken Skull Sessions episode prior to this. The Undertaker, Goldberg, Kane, Big Show, Bret Hart, Ric Flair, Mark Henry, Jerry Lawler, Kurt Angle, Drew McIntyre, Bayley, Sasha Banks, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, The Godfather, Mick Foley, Kevin Nash, and Bobby Lashley have also appeared on the show previously.

Peacock also lists that WWE’s Ruthless Aggression docuseries will return with new episodes on Sunday, November 21 and Monday, November 22. That has yet to be officially announced by WWE. The first season of the docuseries debuted in 2020.

John Cena-created ‘WWE Evil’ series coming to Peacock

A new WWE docuseries created by John Cena is coming to Peacock.

It was announced on Tuesday that a Cena-created series titled “WWE Evil” will be coming to Peacock. Cena will also narrate and executive produce the series.

“WWE Evil” is described as “an entertaining ‘psychological exposé’ into the minds of the most diabolical antagonists in WWE history, and their impact on mainstream culture.” When the show will be premiering hasn’t been revealed.

“For every good guy, there has to be a bad one and @WWE has created some of the BEST bad guys (and ladies) in the history of entertainment,” Cena tweeted. “Excited to highlight those who made us boo, scream, and sometimes cry! WWE Evil on @peacockTV!”

Peacock is making new show announcements every day this week. This is the only WWE-related show that’s been announced thus far.

Peacock became the exclusive home of the WWE Network in the United States as part of a multi-year deal that was announced this January. The WWE Network officially launched on the NBCUniversal-owned streaming service in March.

WWE, NBCU comment on edited Network content on Peacock

As previously reported, NBCUniversal has indeed been reviewing and editing WWE Network content as it moves over to the Peacock streaming service.

In a New York Times story about the changes, both NBCU and WWE made their public comments acknowledging the editing process that has raised the ire of some fans:

  • NBCUniversal: Like with other shows on the Peacock platform, “(we are) reviewing WWE content to ensure it aligns with Peacock’s standards and practices.”
  • WWE: “Peacock and WWE are reviewing all past content to ensure it fits our 2021 standards.”

Some of the more controversial content that has been removed already includes the Roddy Piper promo and match with Bad News Brown from WrestleMania VI where Piper appeared painted half in blackface and Vince McMahon using a racial slur during a backstage segment with John Cena, Booker T and Sharmell at the 2005 Survivor Series.

Peacock is continuing to add WWE content to its service with nearly all of the content currently available on WWE Network expected to be ported over by this August’s SummerSlam. In the U.S., the standalone version of WWE Network will cease to exist starting on April 4th as the big pre-WrestleMania push to get subscribers to add Peacock begins in earnest.

In January, WWE announced a five-year deal reportedly worth $1 billion for Peacock to be the exclusive U.S. home for the WWE Network.

Peacock reviewing and editing content from WWE Network library

Peacock is reviewing the entire WWE Network video library and removing content that does not align with its standards and practices. That information comes via a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

THR cites sources that say that Peacock is reviewing all WWE content in its archive and making WWE aware of any editing.

THR specifically states that Peacock has removed “Rowdy” Roddy Piper vs. Bad News Brown from WrestleMania VI, where Piper appeared in half-blackface, as PW Insider first reported. The other specific segment mentioned in the article as being edited out comes from Survivor Series 2005, where Vince McMahon used the n-word in a backstage segment with John Cena and Booker T.

News broke on Monday, January 25 that WWE and NBCUniversal had reached a deal where WWE would license the WWE Network to Peacock in the United States for five years and a reported $1 billion.

Last Sunday’s Fastlane PPV was the first of the Peacock era, but was still simulcast on WWE Network, which will remain a standalone service in the United States until April 4.
