Number one contender’s match ends in controversy on WWE NXT

Who will challenge for the NXT Women’s Championship at Stand & Deliver? It’s anyone’s guess.

The finish to the main event of this week’s NXT between Kendal Grey and Lola Vice ended in controversy.

Initially, it seemed that Grey had won the match after hitting a northern lights suplex while still trapped in a guillotine. Although Grey’s music played, another referee on the outside of the ring entered and started to argue with the referee who made the pinfall attempt. A replay showed Grey tapping while the referee was making the count.

As the confusion continued, Shawn Michaels came out and tried to make sense of what was going on but things remained unsolved as the show went off the air, leaving the status of the Women’s title match at Stand & Deliver in question.

The number one contender’s match was made last week after Grey & Wren Sinclair picked up a win over Fatal Influence. Grey called her shot against champion Jacy Jayne, but Vice interrupted saying she wanted next.

Two other title matches were made for this Saturday’s show in St. Louis. Vanity Project will defend the NXT Tag Team titles against Los Americanos, while Tatum Paxley will put the North American title on the line against Blake Monroe.

Why This Stand and Deliver Is Historic

The decision to decouple Stand and Deliver from WrestleMania weekend is a bold brand-building move by WWE. Previously held in WrestleMania host cities since 2021, from Tampa to Dallas, Hollywood, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas, NXT now gets its own standalone premium event date, no longer sharing the spotlight with the main roster.

Main roster wrestler wins number one contender’s gauntlet match on WWE NXT

Johnny Gargano is heading to Stand & Deliver.

Gargano was the surprise final entrant in a gauntlet match on Tuesday’s NXT after his wife Candice LeRae introduced him. However, he spent most of the match in the depressed state he has been seen in on SmackDown in recent weeks. Eventually it boiled down to Shiloh Hill and Gargano. However Birthright chose into interfere, dragging Hill out of the ring and throwing him against the staris before rolling him back into the ring. Unsure of what to do, Gargano was eventually pushed by LeRae and he fell on top of Hill, pining him to earn the title match.

As a result of the win, Gargano will now face Myles Borne for the NXT North American title at Stand & Deliver. The two had a staredown after the match.

Gargano has a storied history with NXT, previously winning the NXT Tag Team and NXT Championship. On the main roster, he mostly teamed with Tommaso Ciampa until he left WWE earlier this year. In the time since, Gargano has been shown depressed over the current state of his career.
