IC title triple threat match added to WWE WrestleMania 34 card

After Ronda Rousey & Kurt Angle vs. Stephanie McMahon & Triple H was made official earlier in the night, another match was added to the WrestleMania card on tonight’s episode of Raw.

The Miz will be defending his Intercontinental Championship against Seth Rollins and Finn Balor in a triple threat match at the pay-per-view. That was made apparent when Rollins and Balor both defeated Miz in singles matches last week and set their sights on an IC title match in New Orleans on April 8th.

On tonight’s show, Miz hosted the third annual Mizzies and gave Angle an award for the worst decision made by a Raw general manager. Angle was nominated three times: for bringing Jason Jordan to Raw, for adding Rollins and Balor to the Elimination Chamber match, and for not naming a WrestleMania opponent for Miz.

Rollins interrupted the segment, then took exception when Balor followed suit. That led to them defeating Miz, Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas in a two-on-three handicap match, with Rollins tagging himself in (after Balor had done the same thing earlier in the match) and hitting the Curb Stomp on Miz to pick up the win. Angle then came out and announced the triple threat for WrestleMania.

Here’s the updated card for WrestleMania 34:

  • Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Roman Reigns
  • WWE Champion AJ Styles (if he retains at Fastlane) defending against Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Ronda Rousey & Kurt Angle vs. Stephanie McMahon & Triple H
  • Asuka challenging for either the Raw or SmackDown Women’s Championship
  • Intercontinental Champion The Miz defending against Seth Rollins and Finn Balor in a triple threat match
  • The finals of the Cruiserweight Championship tournament

Lesnar vs. Reigns announced for WWE WrestleMania 34

What had been expected for nearly a year became official tonight as Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns was announced for WrestleMania 34.

Reigns defeated Braun Strowman, Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, John Cena, Elias, and The Miz in tonight’s Elimination Chamber main event and will challenge for Lesnar’s Universal Championship in New Orleans. Though Reigns won the Elimination Chamber, the show ended with Strowman standing tall after a post-match attack on him.

Reigns and Strowman were the final two in the match, with Reigns putting him down with two spears. Strowman eliminated the other five wrestlers before it came down to him and Reigns.

Dave Meltzer first reported last March that WWE was planning on doing Lesnar vs. Reigns for the Universal title as the main event for WrestleMania 34.

There will be a face-to-face segment with Lesnar and Reigns on Raw this week. They previously faced each other in the main event of WrestleMania 31, which ended with Seth Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase and winning the WWE Championship. If Lesnar vs. Reigns goes on last this year, it will be the fourth straight WrestleMania that Reigns has headlined.

WrestleMania 34 will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on April 8th. Shinsuke Nakamura challenging for the WWE Championship, Asuka challenging for either the Raw or SmackDown Women’s Championship, and the finals of the Cruiserweight title tournament are also set for the show.

Update on Ronda Rousey’s WWE WrestleMania 34 plans

The current plan for Ronda Rousey’s WWE debut at WrestleMania looks to be a tag team match against Stephanie McMahon & Triple H.

There had been rumors all week regarding the match the company had tried to put together for WrestleMania 31 with Rousey & Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson against Stephanie & Triple H. It is unknown whether that match can be put together. Johnson hasn’t been able to wrestle a significant match due to insurance reasons regarding movies he has agreed to do that have kept him from wrestling at last few WrestleMania shows, aside from the few second match with Erick Rowan in 2016.

The announcement of Rousey’s signing, which had been known for some time since she had been training since last summer for pro wrestling, is a huge move given the company’s television contract is coming due and Rousey is a gigantic mainstream name. Whether or not she has long-term drawing potential past the curiosity of some early matches, her being part of the roster with her name value as a woman’s star should increase the value of the company’s programming since they have announced she will be there as a full-timer for several years.

Shinsuke Nakamura wins Royal Rumble, sets his sights on AJ Styles

A rematch of one of the best matches from 2016 appears to be in the plans for WrestleMania 34.

The build to WrestleMania officially began at tonight’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view. The men’s Rumble came down to a final four of Shinsuke Nakamura, Roman Reigns, John Cena, and Finn Balor. And after eliminating Reigns to win the match, Nakamura did an interview where he set his sights on a WrestleMania meeting with AJ Styles.

The storyline of the Rumble winners being able to pick which champion they’ll challenge at WrestleMania was set up earlier in the night.

The only time that Styles and Nakamura have faced off in a singles match was at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 10. It finished fourth in our Match of the Year voting. Styles wrote on Twitter following Nakamura’s win: “A match many thought they’d never seen on this continent…in this ring…for this title will be the MAIN EVENT of @WrestleMania. #StylesVsNakamura #YeahOh … this is going to be #Phenomenal.”

To open the main card of the Rumble PPV, Styles retained the WWE Championship against Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn in a handicap match. He pinned Owens, who wasn’t the legal man. Owens and Zayn complained to Shane McMahon after the match, but McMahon wasn’t sympathetic towards them.

There may be at least one more WWE Championship defense before WrestleMania, with SmackDown’s Fastlane show taking place in Columbus, Ohio on March 11th. The Nationwide Arena has been advertising Styles vs. Nakamura vs. Owens vs. Zayn vs. Randy Orton in a fatal five-way title match as the PPV’s main event, but that was before Nakamura won the Rumble.

WWE officially confirms New Orleans as WrestleMania 34 host city

The WWE officially announced the Mercedes-Benz Superdome as the host for the 2018 WrestleMania, which takes place on April 8th, 2018, to avoid Easter which is the previous Sunday, when the show would normally take place.

New Orleans got the news only a few weeks ago. City officials went to the WWE in early 2016 with a presentation, which included a taped video using Drew Brees to try and convince WWE officials to give them the bid.

New Orleans city officials pushed that WrestleMania would be promoted by the city as part of its tricentennial year celebration. New Orleans was open to future years, since it just housed the event in 2014, but really pushed the celebration year angle to WWE officials.

The decision was made only a few weeks ago, rather than months ahead of the public announcement, which is why it only recently leaked out.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the event will include an NXT show at the Smoothie King Center on April 6th and Raw on April 9th. It’s also expected that there will be a Hall of Fame show on April 7th and SmackDown on April 10th.

A press conference is expected tomorrow morning and the announcement is expected tonight on Raw, which comes from New Orleans.

WWE bringing WrestleMania back to New Orleans in 2018

WWE is bringing WrestleMania back to New Orleans in 2018.

F4WOnline.com has confirmed that the city’s Superdome will once again be home to WWE’s biggest event of the year as WrestleMania 34 takes place in Louisiana. An official announcement is expected shortly.

The building was the location of WrestleMania 30, where Daniel Bryan’s journey to the WWE Championship culminated in him first defeating Triple H in the show’s opener and then beating Batista and Randy Orton in a triple threat main event to win the title. That show also featured Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker’s WrestleMania undefeated streak, an in-ring promo segment with Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, and The Rock, John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt, and Cesaro winning the first Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

It seems that WWE liked their time in the city, as they’re bringing WrestleMania back just four years later. New Orleans has long been a destination location that people will flock to for big events and the Super Bowl is held at the Superdome fairly regularly.

Before WrestleMania makes its way to New Orleans again in 2018, this year’s show will be held at Camping World Stadium (the former Citrus Bowl) in Orlando, Florida on April 2nd.

On Sunday night, Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet first reported confirmation that New Orleans would host WrestleMania 34.
