DragonKingKarl: Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame ballot talk

Karl Stern returns with a new DragonKingKarl Show dedicated to this year’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame ballot: his most listened-to show of the year.

Over the past several months, this podcast has focused on many of the people who had not yet made the ballot which gives Karl much more latitude to dive into the people and process of the Hall of Fame, and to examine the ballot.

On the second half of the show, he throws a curveball into the process which makes for a very interesting segment. Also, Karl prepares a suggestion for Dave Meltzer about how to handle the pioneer era of wrestling.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The WON Hall of Fame case for Gordman & Goliath

It is a regular gravy edition of the DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show as I dive deeper into those on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame ballot who have not yet been voted in.

The very famous tag team of Black Gordman and Great Goliath are two of those very people so why aren’t they in and should they be?

Also, I talk more 1930s Madison Square Garden history with a huge doublecross incoming and also look at another mid-1990s Tokyo Dome show with a massive tag team match.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The WON Hall of Fame case for the Mongolian Stomper

Join Karl Stern today for a look at another Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame nominee: The Mongolian Stomper.

I grew up watching the Stomper on Southeastern Wrestling, but he worked a different sort of character in Stampede. I’ll discuss if any of those belong in the Hall of Fame.

Plus, I continue our look back at 1930s wrestling at Madison Square Garden, and more 1990s Tokyo Dome pro wrestling history!

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The WON Hall of Fame case for the Hart Foundation

On today’s DragonKingKarl, I continue my look at acts which have not yet been voted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame with a focus on the Hart Foundation.

While Bret Hart is already in, his team with Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart is not. Why?

Then, we travel in time back to the mid-1930s for a look at what was happening at Madison Square Garden as the big name of Danno O’Mahoney enters the scene. Plus, I provide an extensive look at a 1990s Tokyo Dome card during the midst of the mixed martial arts influence.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Making the WON Hall of Fame case for the Iron Sheik

On this episode of the DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show, I take a look at the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame case for former WWF World Champion and one of the craziest characters in pro wrestling history: the Iron Sheik.

I look at the qualifications for “Sheiky Baby” and add a personal story of booking him once.

Finally, I look back to the mid-1930s, Madison Square Garden and the return of Jim Londos, and a mid-1990s look at the Tokyo Dome and the BVD Martial Arts tournament featuring Antonio Inoki and, yes, Sting!

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: ‘Bullet’ Bob Armstrong’s case for the WON HOF

On today’s DragonKingKarl, our Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame candidate discussion moves to “Bullet” Bob Armstrong.

Armstrong (and family) was among my favorites growing up, the hometown hero of my regional wrestling promotion, Southeastern Championship Wrestling, and later as “The Bullet” in Continental. Does he belong in the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame?

Plus, I have a discussion of both 1934 at Madison Square Garden where Jim Londos finally got his title back from “Pig Farmer” Jim Browning and more 1990s Tokyo Dome.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The WON Hall of Fame case for Ole Anderson

Image: WWE

On today’s DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show, the main topic of discussion is changes in pro wrestling and society over the past 30 years, how pro wrestling culture ebbed and flowed during that time, and just how great early 1990s WCW was. (From a financial standpoint, terrible, but there was also a lot of fun to be found.)

Then, I examine the case for Ole Anderson as a singles wrestler for the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The WON Hall of Fame case for The Von Erichs

On this week’s DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show, I take a look at the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame case for the Von Erichs trio of David, Kevin & Kerry Von Erich.

Amazingly, the only Von Erich in the HOF is Fritz, but should this be the case?

Also on this show, I talk more from the Jack Pfefer scandal in New York wrestling, plus a really cool show from the Tokyo Dome in 1992.

There’s lots of pro wrestling history in this episode, so let’s get started.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Making a WON Hall of Fame case for Sputnik Monroe

Image: WWE

On this week’s DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show, I have more thoughts on the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame in terms of future potential inductees.

Recently, a tracking spreadsheet for the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame was created by a website subscriber — a valuable resource for studying those who haven’t yet gotten into the Hall of Fame.

As a long-time voter, I am going to begin working my way through this resource and carrying you, the listener, with me. Today we begin by looking at the case for Sputnik Monroe, both a wrestler and civil rights activist.

Plus, I have more insights from both the 1930s era at Madison Square Garden and the 1990s at the Tokyo Dome.
