John Cena’s ‘Wipeout’ canceled by TBS

One of John Cena’s non-wrestling projects is coming to an end as Wipeout on TBS has been canceled.

The news was revealed by TNT & TBS president Jason Sarlanis in a keynote presentation this past Monday at the Realscreen Summit in Miami, Florida, noting “a few more episodes” will still air.

A quote from Sarlanis indicated that costs for shows like Wipeout and the also-canceled The Cube are expensive and that they are focusing on doing more sports-adjacent programming and potential spinoffs of Impractical Jokers.

Cena has yet to publicly comment on the cancelation.

From the talk (transcription provided by Deadline):

Sarlanis admitted that these shows are expensive. “Those are very much in the realm of what we do. Wipeout is inherently comedic and a joy to watch. But I think what we’re what we’re looking at is being realistic in terms of the entire environment. We have to recalibrate,” he said.

A reboot from an ABC project, the Cena co-hosted game show-esque revival aired on TBS for a pair of two-part seasons, kicking off in 2021. The show will conclude with more than 30 episodes. It’s unclear how long the show will remain available on the Max streaming service.

Cena is still involved with the WBD family with the second season of Peacemaker set to air on Max in August 2025.

Cena is the opening stages of his final year as a WWE wrestler and will be part of March 1st’s Elimination Chamber in Toronto.

TNT & TBS GM that helped AEW expand departs Warner Bros. Discovery

One of the major players that helped AEW expand within WarnerMedia is leaving the company.

Deadline first reported Wednesday Brett Weitz, general manager of TNT, TBS and truTV, will be transitioning out of his role within the next month after 14 years within Turner.

Weitz found himself without a position following the WarnerMedia/Discovery merger.

Weitz took over as GM when AEW launched on TNT back in October 2019 and helped guide its subsequent expansion with Rampage and Battle of the Belts, in addition to reviving the John Cena-led Wipeout on TBS.

The new environment within the new Warner Bros. Discovery corporate environment continues to be shaken up due to the fallout from the recently approved merger.

How that new corporate structure and philosophy affects negotiations with AEW remains to be seen. What is known is that there will be less of an emphasis on scripted programming as they ended new scripted show development on both TBS and TNT.

At next week’s upfronts where networks try to drive interest with advertisers for their upcoming programming slate, live sports and news will be a major focus of the new company’s presentation.

AEW is part of an advertising package along with sports, CNN specials and original documentaries called Premier — an effort for the company to drive top ad dollars what they see have been undervalued assets.

AEW’s extension with Warner Bros. Discovery runs through 2023.

TBS reveals premiere date for John Cena-hosted ‘Wipeout’ revival

TBS’ John Cena-hosted revival of the obstacle course competition series “Wipeout” will premiere this April.

It was announced today that the “Wipeout” revival will premiere on TBS on Thursday, April 1 at 9 p.m. Eastern time. Cena is hosting the show with comedian Nicole Byer, with model Camille Kostek serving as the host in the field and covering the contestants’ progress.

Cena is also an executive producer for the series.

“Wipeout” will feature “new format twists and elements that will push the athleticism and willpower of each contestant pairing to even greater extremes, all while delivering more than a few epic fails. Each game has been designed into three rounds and now features a jaw-dropping, three-stage, obstacle course consisting of multiple strategy and decision points designed to test the stamina of the competitors. The series’ iconic big balls also make a return, bringing many laughs and surprises along the way for fans.”

“Wipeout is the show that quarantine has been begging for…it has something for everyone in the family,” said Corie Henson, EVP/Head of Unscripted Development, TNT, TBS, truTV. “John and Nicole are the best pairing of 2021 and together with Camille, they bring the perfect balance of wit and cheerleading. We’ve created an edgier version of the original that fuses extreme athleticism with laugh-out-loud moments that fans of the show will be talking about long after the episode airs.”

“Wipeout” originally aired on ABC from 2008 to 2014.

Cena, who is filming his upcoming “Peacemaker” series for HBO Max in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, told Sports Illustrated in an interview published earlier this month that there’s “no logistical way” he’ll be able to appear at WrestleMania 37 this April due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions. Cena’s most recent in-ring appearance was his cinematic Firefly Funhouse match against “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at last year’s WrestleMania.

The trailer for “Wipeout” is available to watch below:

John Cena to host TBS’ revival of ‘Wipeout’

John Cena will be one of the hosts of a revival of the obstacle course competition series Wipeout on TBS.

It was announced today that Cena and Nicole Byer will host TBS’ revival of Wipeout. Camille Kostek will be the host in the field for the series and will cover the contestants’ progress throughout each round.

“I couldn’t be more excited for what’s in store for this radically absurd show that has its own fair share of legendary faceplants.” Cena said in a press release. “The power of Wipeout is its ability to gather people of all backgrounds for fast paced, physical FUN! I look forward to seeing fan responses both new and existing. This’ll be a hosting experience unlike anything I’ve ever done! I can’t wait to get started in rooting for our contestants!”

Cena will also be an executive producer for the series.

“The re-imagined series will feature new twists and elements that will push contestants’ athleticism, approach, and determination to even greater extremes, all while delivering some wildly epic fails,” the press release said. “Each game is three rounds with each round featuring a jaw-dropping, multi-stage obstacle course with numerous strategy and decision points designed to further challenge the stamina of the competitors and deliver even more hilarious and surprising wipeouts! And of course, the iconic staple of the show – the big balls! – are returning with a vengeance.”

Wipeout originally debuted on ABC in 2008 and aired until 2014. When TBS’ revival of the show will be premiering hasn’t been revealed.

Cena’s most recent appearance on WWE television was his cinematic Firefly Fun House match against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36 earlier this year.
