Wade Barrett signs contract with WWE, joins NXT commentary team

After making his return to WWE last month, Wade Barrett is now officially a permanent member of the NXT commentary team.

It was announced via Sports Illustrated today that Barrett (real name Stu Bennett) has signed with WWE and will be part of the commentary team for every NXT broadcast going forward. It’s a one-year contract that includes an option to extend the partnership.

“I hope this lasts for a long time, that’s our intent,” Barrett told Sports Illustrated. “So there is no bad news to share, but never forget, there is always a little bad news up my sleeve.”

Barrett joins Vic Joseph and Beth Phoenix on the NXT commentary team. Mauro Ranallo had been the lead voice of the brand prior to mutually and amicably parting ways with WWE last month.

“Our aim is to be different, a little more unique than the other WWE programming,” Barrett said. “We don’t want to be a carbon copy of what you hear on Raw or SmackDown. I’ve known Beth for years, and she is incredibly talented, and I am just getting to know Vic. I’m excited to learn from and work with both of them, and I’m really excited to develop this into a really tight unit.”

Barrett’s original run with WWE ended when he departed the company in 2016. He had been part of the NWA’s commentary team since starting in the role last December. He returned to WWE as a commentator for the August 26 episode of NXT and has also called the two NXT episodes that have taken place since then.

Wade Barrett confirmed for next week’s NXT commentary team

Wade Barrett is officially set for his third straight week of NXT commentary.

On Twitter today, Barrett confirmed that he’ll again be part of the commentary team for next Tuesday’s episode of NXT: “There’s no way I’m missing this one. This is fast becoming a habit.. see you next week for another #NXTSuperTuesday! #WWENXT”

PWInsider reported earlier this week that Barrett was in negotiations with WWE to return to the promotion full-time as a commentator. He’s called the past two NXT episodes with Vic Joseph and Beth Phoenix.

It was announced this Monday that Mauro Ranallo and WWE have “mutually and amicably agreed to part ways.”

Barrett’s in-ring run with WWE ended when he departed the company in 2016. Using his real name (Stu Bennett), he joined the commentary team for the NWA this past December.

NXT is again airing on Tuesday next week due to the NHL playoffs. After this week’s four-way Iron Man match for the vacant NXT Championship ended in a two-way tie, Finn Balor and Adam Cole will face off in a singles match for the title next Tuesday. Rhea Ripley vs. Mercedes Martinez in a steel cage match is also set for the episode.

Report: Wade Barrett negotiating full-time commentary deal with WWE

It appears that Wade Barrett’s return to WWE may be a long-term one.

PWInsider reported today that, after appearing as part of the commentary team for last week’s NXT, Barrett (real name Stu Bennett) “met with WWE officials and is currently negotiating a full-time return to the company as an announcer.”

Barrett called last week’s NXT with Vic Joseph and Beth Phoenix and will also be on commentary for the episode of NXT that’s airing this Tuesday. He tweeted last Thursday: “Thank you for all of the nice messages about my return to @WWENXT. Crazy couple of days, but I enjoyed it so much, I’ll be back for #NXTSuperTuesday next week! Shout out to @VicJosephWWE @TheBethPhoenix and @TomPhillipsWWE for taking it easy on the new kid.”

PWInsider’s report stated that Barrett’s appearances on commentary for NXT were pretty much a feeling out process to see if he and WWE were interested in working together going forward. It also stated that “there was talk over the last few days that [Barrett] could perhaps be plugged into NXT UK as an announcer.”

Last week’s NXT was Barrett’s first appearance for WWE since departing the company in 2016. Barrett (using his real name) joined the NWA’s commentary team in December 2019.

Wade Barrett doing commentary for WWE NXT this week

A former WWE wrestler is returning as part of the commentary team for this week’s NXT tapings.

Pro Wrestling Sheet reported today that Stu Bennett (formerly known as Wade Barrett in WWE) will be doing commentary for NXT this week. Bennett departed WWE in 2016.

“Sources tell us this is just a one-shot deal for now and that the former leader of Nexus – who won the first original season of NXT – has not signed a full-time deal to re-join the company,” Pro Wrestling Sheet wrote.

Bennett joined the NWA’s commentary team in December 2019.

Vic Joseph, Beth Phoenix, and special guest Corey Graves were the commentators for NXT TakeOver XXX this past weekend. Mauro Ranallo didn’t call the event due to being back home with family in Canada.

Wednesday’s episode of NXT will feature the fallout from TakeOver XXX. Tommaso Ciampa, who hasn’t appeared on television since a post-match interview following his loss to Karrion Kross at TakeOver: In Your House this June, will return on the show.

Wade Barrett joins NWA commentary team, updated Into the Fire card

The NWA has announced who will be replacing Jim Cornette on their commentary team.

At the end of tonight’s NWA Power episode, it was revealed that Stu Bennett (formerly known as Wade Barrett in WWE) will be joining the NWA commentary team at Into the Fire. He’ll be calling the pay-per-view with Joe Galli.

This week’s Power was the show’s season one finale, with new episodes set to resume on December 17. It was the last appearance by Cornette, who resigned from the NWA after the offensive comment he made on commentary on the Power episode that aired two weeks ago.

Into the Fire is taking place at GPB Studios in Atlanta on Saturday, December 14 and will be available via Fite TV. Two new title matches have been confirmed for the PPV. New NWA Tag Team Champions The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express will defend their titles against The Wild Cards, while Colt Cabana will defend his National Championship in a triple threat match against Aron Stevens and Ricky Starks.

The build to Nick Aldis and James Storm’s two-out-of-three falls NWA title match continued on tonight’s Power. It was set up that Aldis and Storm could each choose a referee for one of the falls. Storm chose Brian Hebner, while Aldis chose former NWA World Champion Tim Storm. Aldis also said that his manager Kamille would have the night off at Into the Fire.

Here’s the updated card for the PPV:

  • NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis defending against James Storm in a two-out-of-three falls match
  • NWA Tag Team Champions The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) defending against The Wild Cards (Thomas Latimer & Royce Isaacs)
  • NWA National Champion Colt Cabana defending against Aron Stevens and Ricky Starks in a triple threat match
  • Allysin Kay & Ashley Vox vs. two members of Melina’s stable (Melina, Thunder Rosa & Marti Belle)
  • Eli Drake vs. Ken Anderson
  • Trevor Murdoch vs. The Question Mark

CM Punk, Wade Barrett among hosts for Netflix’s ‘Ultimate Beastmaster’

Two former WWE wrestlers will be among the hosts for season three of Netflix’s “Ultimate Beastmaster.”

Netflix announced the series’ renewal today, and along with it named CM Punk and Stu Bennett (the former Wade Barrett) as two of its hosts. There will be nine countries represented on the show, with two hosts/commentators for each of them. Punk will join former NFL running back Tiki Barber on the United States broadcast team.

Punk tweeted about the news: “The Beast is back and I’ll be your host for Team USA along with the my co-host the awesome @TikiBarber! Don’t miss the most intense obstacle course in the world!!!!! #UltimateBeastmaster Season 3 coming in 2018!!!!!”

Punk previously appeared on MTV’s “The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros” reality show last year. While his next UFC fight has yet to be announced, the UFC has discussed booking Punk vs. Mike Jackson for their June 9th pay-per-view in Chicago.

Bennett will be paired with television host Kate Abdo on the United Kingdom commentary team. Anderson Silva is one of the hosts for Brazil.

“Ultimate Beastmaster” is a Netflix original reality competition series. The third season will have nine episodes and is set to premiere later this year. The US, UK, Brazil, Australia, Germany, Italy, France, South Korea, and Mexico will be the countries represented.

WCPW rebranding as Defiant Wrestling, Wade Barrett to be new GM

Following the departure of some of WhatCulture’s key staff members, What Culture Pro Wrestling will also be undergoing some changes before the end of the year.

The promotion announced today that they would be rebranding as Defiant Wrestling in December. The first show under the new name will be a live iPPV called “WeAreDefiant” on December 4th at the O2 Academy in Newcastle, which will air on their new Access Defiant on-demand service and will be available on the FITE app.

Stu Bennett, who was formerly known as Wade Barrett in WWE, was revealed to be the promotion’s new on-screen general manager after former authority figure Adam Blampied was among those to leave WhatCulture earlier this month. Bennett will open their Refuse to Lose iPPV broadcast on October 2nd, which will be the last show branded as a WCPW event.

Refuse to Lose will also be the last show offered on the WhatCulture Extra service, with old WCPW events moving to Access Defiant on December 1st and WhatCulture Extra continuing with other WhatCulture website content. Tapings for their “Loaded” YouTube show will take place in Manchester on October 3rd as well.

WCPW’s Twitter account noted that Defiant Wrestling will continue to broadcast a free weekly show on YouTube and wrote that more details on the rebrand will be made available in the coming weeks.

With backing from WhatCulture’s website, WCPW entered into the UK wrestling scene last year and regularly brought over big international names. Dave Meltzer chronicled some of the problems they’ve faced with their business model and YouTube’s demonetization of wrestling content in the September 25th edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

More WWE departures; Wade Barrett, Torito, Damien Sandow, Santino and Cameron

In a day of housecleaning not seen in years, there are a few more WWE departures to report after the three that were made public earlier this morning. The most notable would be Stu Bennett (Wade Barrett), who posted this on Twitter at 12:40 pm eastern:

After almost 9 years, today was my final day with WWE. I made a decision back in August last year not to re-sign once my current contract expired in June 2016, and I’ve now reached an agreement with management to dissolve the contract a few weeks early. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years, especially the guys I’ve shared a ring & locker room with. I will miss them tremendously.

As planned, I am now taking a well-earned break from the wrestling industry in order to expand my horizons, but I’ll be back in the ring when the time is right.

Thanks for the support everyone, I’l see you all down the road.

Barrett was the first-ever winner of the NXT reality to earn a main roster spot. He and the other cast members of that show debuted in a memorable angle in a 2010 edition of Monday Night RAW where they laid out John Cena and destroyed the ring. Barrett had several stop and start pushes over the year and injuries derailed him on several occasions when it appeared he was ready to break through. He had expressed interest in the past in an acting career and had a role in the 2013 film “Dead Man Down”

El Torito (aka Mascarita Dorada) has been with WWE since 2013, debuting as the costumed bull mascot of Los Matadores, after a long career in Mexico with CMLL and AAA. After feuding with Hornswoggle (who was also released today) for a couple of years, he broke off with Los Matadores in September of last year after being put through a table by the Dudleyz. Aside from a few comedy backstage segments he had not been seen on TV since then.

Arianne Andrew (Cameron) was a cast member in the 2011 version of Tough Enough, hosted by Steve Austin. She was the first elimination on the show but was the only cast member to make it to the main roster. She started as a “Funkadactyl” with partner Naomi as they accomponied Brodus Clay and later Tensai (Matt Bloom) to the ring. She was also an original cast member of E’s “Total Divas“. She and Naomi competed as a tag team off and on after Clay was released and Tensai transitioned into a commentary roll on NXT. She did a mini-feud with then champion Paige, losing three consecutive title matches in early 2015. Later that year she surfaced on NXT, facing Asuka in one of the current NXT women’s champion’s first bouts with the company. She has made a couple of appearances since then but was not featured prominently and her release was announced today.  It was figured she was on the chopping block after Ryback posted a message on Tumblr essentially demanding equal pay for everyone on the roster and Cameron tweeted out that she was in support of Ryback before quickly pulling it.  She later posted a long tirade about cyberbullying.

UPDATES:

Also just announced was the release of Aaron Haddad (Damien Sandow). Sandow was a popular undercard wrestler who always got bigger crowd reactions than his push. He competed on RAW just this past Monday and his elimination was one of the louder reactions in the match. He is a former Money in the Bank winner with the distinction of being one of only two wrestlers to not cash in his briefcace successfully (the other being, of all people, John Cena). He’d started with the company in 2002, starting as Aaron “The Idol” Stevens in OVW and was later called up to Smackdown as Idol Stevens, teaming with KC James as Michelle McCool’s “Teacher’s Pets”. That run was short-lived and he was released in 2007 after a return to OVW. He was re-signed in 2010 and assigned to FCW, the WWE’s developmental territory at the time, and made his return to the main roster in 2012 as Sandow. He teamed with Cody Rhodes as the “Rhodes Scholars” as they feuded with Team Hell No over the WWE Tag Team titles. He later did a gimmick where he impersonated characters from both inside and outside wrestling, such as Bruce Springsteen, Abraham Lincoln, Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon. That morphed into a memorable sting where he played Macho Sandow, along with Curtis Axel’s character of “Axel Mania”, a Hulk Hogan parody. The two feuded and then teams for several months before Hulk Hogan’s falling out with the company led to the dissolution of the team. Sandow had been used sparingly since then, usually in an enhancement role or in battle royals.

WWE just announced the release of Santino.  He had underwent neck surgery and the belief was he probably wasn’t ever wrestling again.  He had made occasional appearances here and there on WWE TV.  Of late, he has been running his own mixed martial arts school, the BattleArts Academy, in Ontario.  He started out in Ohio Valley Wrestling in the mid-2000s as Johnny Geo Basco and Boris Alexiev, basically your standard Rusev foreign heel character.  An incident occured at a TV taping where the Boogeyman came down to the ring and the idea what that he was supposed to be a terrifying character, but Santino (real name Anthony Carelli) was sitting in the crowd and started laughing.  Jim Cornette was furious and slapped him around, which snowballed into the deparature of Cornette from WWE developmental.  He debuted on the main roster in April of 2007 on a show in Milan, Italy.  His new gimmick was that he was an Italian babyface, so he was signed to face Umaga for the Intercontinental Title and he won it his first night in.  He lost the belt back to Umaga a few months later and soon began to morph into a full-fledged comedy figure.  The irony is that he was so great at the character that they ran with it full-bore, probably to the detriment of his career since they never really pushed him as a serious character afterwards.
