Teddy Long to appear at MLW event

Legendary wrestling personality Teddy Long will be in the building when MLW comes to Atlanta this month.

It was announced today that Long is slated to appear at MLW’s television taping at Center Stage in Atlanta on Saturday, March 14. What role Long will be playing that night has not been announced — with MLW teasing that he could be there to scout talent or make some kind of announcement.

“A standout general manager and guiding light for champions for decades, Teddy Long’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Atlanta. From managing the dominant forces of Doom and the Skyscrapers to advising Ron Simmons during his championship reign and becoming a respected power broker behind the scenes, Atlanta has long been a major part of Long’s celebrated career,” MLW wrote. “Center Stage, in particular, has served as a backdrop for many pivotal moments in his journey.

“Long last appeared in MLW during the summer of 2024, and his sudden return raises questions across the league. Is he here to scout new talent? To back a rising star? To settle unfinished business? Or does Teddy have a blockbuster announcement up his sleeve? One thing is certain: when Teddy Long shows up, something big usually follows.”

The 78-year-old Long has worked as a manager, referee, and on-screen general manager during his decades in the industry. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.

These tapings are for MLW’s Fusion TV series, which is set to return soon after a multi-year hiatus. An exact return date has not been announced yet.

Teddy Long joins 2017 WWE Hall of Fame class

Continuing the WrestleMania season tradition of announcing Hall of Fame inductees before Raw on Mondays, WWE added Teddy Long to the 2017 Hall of Fame class this week.

WWE chose Fox Sports to break the news, with an article also appearing on their own website. Long joins Kurt Angle and The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express as the already announced members of this year’s class.

“Well, I was really surprised, you know? I had thought about being inducted into the Hall of Fame and I thought ‘well, if they’re going to do that, I’m pretty sure my time will come one day.’ And that’s what did happen,” Long told Fox Sports. “I was real excited, it’s such an honor to be a part of something like this. To go into the 2017 WWE Hall of Fame…man, it’s just great. It don’t get no better than that.”

Long is best known to modern fans for his time as an on-screen character in the 2000s, where he served as SmackDown’s general manager for several years. He got his start in the 80s as a member of the ring crew for Jim Crockett Promotions before transitioning to a career as a referee and manager on television.

Sunday Conversation: Teddy Long on racism, Owen Hart, key career learnings, more

Fan….driver….ring jacket carrier….ring crew….referee….manager….general manager….legend.

All of these things (and more) can sum up the professional wrestling career of Teddy Long, and we are given a look into all of the above and more in a near 30-minute interview that I conducted with him recently.

From his beginnings in the business thanks to Abdullah the Butcher through to the CM Punk/Undertaker storyline in WWE, he has seen and done it all.

We talk at length about why he was always happy to be working in the business, how much he loved Owen Hart and what it was like on he night that he died, dealing with racism from fans in his early days, whether he will veer be in the WWE Hall Of Fame and why he is the first to show respect in any locker room he is in. We look at the inner workings of being a referee, why certain people should have had more respect and common sense in the business (especially Abraham Washington in WWE) and the reasons why as he watched Vince McMahon allow himself to be humiliated as a character on TV each week that he was never worried about any storyline they threw his way.

We could have literally talked for hours about his stories in the business, but enjoy just a 30-minute glimpse into his 30+ year career.
