Ric Flair project in development by The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions

The story of Ric Flair may be heading to the big screen in the years ahead.

The Wrap reported Wednesday that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions is developing a project on the incomparable life of Flair. Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia will produce along with Kevin Misher of Misher Films.

The team previously teamed up on 2019’s “Fighting With My Family” — a film based on the life and family of AEW’s Saraya, then Paige in WWE.

Flair was not named as being directly involved and as of this writing, he has yet to publicly comment on it.

Johnson gave the following statement to The Wrap about the project which had no timeline included:

“As a kid who grew up in professional wrestling, I idolized, ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair. He was a hero to me. And once I broke into the wrestling business and began to spill my own sweat and blood – my reverence for Ric turned to respect. Because I realized just how rare and impossible it is to disrupt the wrestling business, culture and truly change the game – and that’s exactly what Ric Flair did. This project is personal, and we can’t wait to tell his unbelievable story. As always, thank you for the house, Ric.”

As part of a multi-year deal with an affiliated energy drink, Flair has made infrequent appearances in AEW alongside his friend and former rival, Sting, as he approaches his retirement match in less than two weeks. Flair wrestled his final match in July 2022.

While Flair has been the focus of several documentaries, this will be the first time he will be depicted in a feature film if that is what the project turns out to be.

A depiction of Flair did famously appear in last year’s “The Iron Claw” film in a performance that was panned by wrestling fans. WWE’s Grayson Waller played Flair on episodes of Johnson’s now-canceled “Young Rock” TV series on NBC.

Vice & Seven Bucks Productions producing ‘mysterious demise’ of WCW docuseries

Vice Studios and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions are partnering together for a new pro wrestling-related docuseries.

In an article published by Deadline on Monday, it was noted that Vice Studios and Seven Bucks Productions are working on a docuseries “investigating the mysterious demise” of WCW. The docuseries was listed among several other projects that Seven Bucks Production has in development:

Seven Bucks has more than 60 film and television projects and counting in active development. Among the company’s upcoming titles are ‘Red One,’ greenlit by Amazon, directed by Emmy nominee Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, and Lucy Liu; ‘Kate Warne,’ also for Amazon, an action-packed biopic starring Emily Blunt as the first female Pinkerton agent; ‘Moana,’ a live-action remake of the animated feature, directed by Thomas Kail from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller; new installments in the ‘Fast and Furious’ and ‘Jumanji’ franchises; and, in partnership with Vice Studios, a docuseries investigating the mysterious demise of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), once the biggest wrestling company in America.

Vice and Seven Bucks Productions also worked together on “Tales from the Territories,” a 2022 series that looked back at the territorial era of pro wrestling. That series was from “Dark Side of the Ring” co-creators Evan Husney and Jason Eisener.

WCW went out of business in 2001 and was purchased by WWE. After WCW’s demise, The Rock held the WCW World Championship twice in 2001 when the title was featured on WWF television.

Vice TV announces ‘Tales from the Territories’ series

Vice TV has officially announced its new “Tales from the Territories” series.

It was revealed today that “Tales from the Territories” will premiere on Vice TV at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, October 4. The series is from Dark Side of the Ring’s Evan Husney & Jason Eisener and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions.

The series will take viewers back to “the golden-age of professional wrestling” when the industry was divided into local territories.

Husney and Eisener are executive producers for “Tales from the Territories,” along with Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz of Seven Bucks Productions. Chavo Guerrero Jr. is involved with the series as a co-executive producer.

“We’re incredibly excited to expand the ‘Dark Side of the Ring’ series with this first-ever exploration of the hidden past of wrestling’s Wild West era, with a dream collaborator in Dwayne Johnson, who has such deep family roots in the history of the business,” Husney and Eisener said. “We can’t wait to showcase the fascinating stories of the pioneers who set the stage for wrestling’s worldwide pop culture dominance.”

Amid reports that “Dark Side of the Ring” had been canceled, Vice TV tweeted a statement this May saying that they were “as committed as ever” to the “Dark Side” series.

“We’ve heard some rumors flying around about Season 4 of Dark Side of the Ring. We are as committed as ever to both the series and the broader Dark Side franchise,” Vice TV wrote. “Evan [Husney] and Jason [Eisener] are hard at work making more content that we know our fans of the series will love. Stay tuned.”

Interviews with Bret Hart and Abdullah the Butcher are featured in the trailer for “Tales from the Territories.” Jim Ross revealed on his podcast earlier this year that he was going to be involved in a “Tales from the Territories” episode looking back at Mid-South with Jake Roberts, Michael Hayes, and Ted DiBiase.

At a Friday press conference in New York City, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced he and his Seven Bucks Productions company are going to create a movie about former UFC star Mark Kerr.

Kerr, a former NCAA Division 1 championship wrestler, was one of the early pioneers of the sport and competed in the UFC four times (all in 1997) before moving onto PRIDE and other organizations. He retired in 2009.

Kerr’s story was told in the well-recieved 2002 HBO documentary “The Smashing Machine: The Life & Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr” that covered his career and struggles fighting painkillers.

The movie will be a scripted one and the 50-year-old Kerr will be involved, giving the project his blessing. Johnson didn’t announce any details about the anticipated release date of the movie. Seven Bucks Productions released this year’s “Fighting With My Family”, a biopic of now-retired WWE women’s star Paige.

Johnson is in town for Saturday’s UFC 244, presenting the BMF title to the winner of Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz.
