NJPW Sakura Genesis live results: Kota Ibushi vs. Will Ospreay

Kota Ibushi makes his first defense of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship today, taking on 2021 New Japan Cup winner Will Ospreay in the main event of Sakura Genesis at Sumo Hall.

Ibushi holds a 2-1 edge in Ospreay in career singles competition.

In the semi-main, El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru of Suzuki-gun defend their IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles against SHO and the returning YOH. YOH has been out of action for nearly a year with a knee injury.

A series of tag matches will fill out the rest of the card.

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Satoshi Kojima will face Jay White and Bad Luck Fale. Tanahashi is the NEVER Openweight Champion and a defense against White has been teased for later this month.

A new member of The United Empire will be introduced in the third match, as Tetsuya Naito, SANADA and Shingo Takagi take on the group’s Great-O-Khan, Jeff Cobb and a mystery partner.

Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano, Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI will face EVIL, KENTA, Yujiro Takahashi, Taiji Ishimori and Dick Togo. KENTA, Yujiro and Ishimori have been positioned as the likely next challengers for Goto, Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI’s NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag titles.

In the opener, Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr. and DOUKI will take on Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa and Jado. Taichi and Sabre are likely the number one contenders for Tonga and Loa’s IWGP Heavyweight Tag titles.

Our live coverage begins at 4 a.m. Eastern time.

Report —

Hiromu Takahashi ran out to the ring to kick off the show. He cut a promo and said that he was not ready to return to action, but would be joining the Japanese broadcast team for the show. He previewed the card and called Will Ospreay “a dirty, stinking cat.”

Tachi, Zack Sabre Jr. & DOUKI defeated Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa & Jado (10:10)

The IWGP Heavyweight Tag champs were pinned, setting up Taichi and Sabre as their next challengers. The match was not good. There was energy, but far too much Jado and DOUKI.

The teams began brawling before the bell. They fought around ringside. Jado and DOUKI paired off in the ring and began as the legal men. Jado cut DOUKI off and used a chinlock. There was a long heat segment on DOUKI.

DOUKI came back with a swing DDT to Tama. Taichi got a tag and choked Tama. Tanga broke up the choke. Taichi then began to choke him. Taichi went after Jado on the apron and choked him as well. Tama hit a Tongan Twist to Taichi. Taichi hit a gamengiri into a double down.

Tanga and Sabre got tags. Sabre tried a guillotine, but Tanga powered out. Tanga ate a series of uppercut forearms, but no-sold and backed Sabre into the corner. Sabre got an armbar applied, but Tanga reversed into a crossface. DOUKI broke up the hold.

Jado jumped in wth a kendo stick. Tama entered with the iron fingers. The match broke down, leaving Sabre and Tanga scrambling. Sabre used a European clutch and pinned Tanga.

Chairman Sugabayashi took possession of the iron fingers after the match, angering Taichi.

Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano, Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI defeated EVIL, KENTA, Yujiro Takahashi, Taiji Ishimori & Dick Togo (11:37)

This was another brawl that was heavy on the comedy.

The CHAOS side attacked before the opening bell and briefly got some shine. Bullet Club gained the upper hand after Ishimori cut off Goto. Goto managed a tag to YH, but YH was then cut off and worked over.

Bullet Club exposed the turnbuckle in their corner and repeatedly sent YH into it. KENTA tagged in and teased hitting YH with YH’s bo staff, which KENTA stole earlier in the tour. YH got the staff back. Ishii and Yujiro got tags.

Ishii hit a powerslam to Yujiro. The match broke down and everyone jumped in. Yujiro hit an Angle slam on Ishii and tagged EVIL. EVIL sent Ishii into the buckle. Ishii then whipped EVIL into the exposed buckle and tagged out.

Yano tagged in and exposed a second buckle. He rolled EVIL up for two. Togo hit Yano from the apron. EVIL sent Yano into one of the exposed buckles. Togo tagged in.

Bullet Club went 5-on-1 against Yano. EVIL hit a fisherman buster. Togo choked Yano with his ligature. EVIL took the ref. Yano hit a low blow to Togo and placed a hood over Togo’s head, then rolled him up for the pin.

KENTA, Yujiro and Ishimori faced off with the NEVER Six-Man Champions, Ishii, Goto and YH. KENTA stole YH’s staff again as Bullet Club made a hasty retreat after the defeat.

Great-O-Khan, Jeff Cobb & Aaron Henare defeated Tetsuya Naito, SANADA & Shingo Takagi (9:51)

Toa Henare, now going by “The Ultimate Weapon” Aaron Henare, was revealed as the mystery man and newest member of United Empire. It’s a better spot for him than being basically a Young Lion, but we’ll see how it plays out in the long run.

Henare changed his look up a bit, wearing sunglasses to the ring, gloves and long tights rather than trunks.

Empire cut Naito off and worked on him for the bulk of the early part of the match. Naito hit an enzugiri and tagged Shingo. Shingo and Henare exchanged power spots. Shingo hit a vertical suplex and Cobb tagged in.

Cobb and Shingo had a nice sequence. Shingo is the best guy in the company right now and it’s not particularly close. SANADA got a tag. He tried for Skull End, but Cobb turned it into a pop-up powerbomb.

Empire went 3-on-1 on SANADA. Henare tagged in and used a blue thunder bomb for a two count. SANADA got Skull End, but O-Khan broke it up. Naito jumped in, but got sent outside after an O-Khan tackle. Cobb caught an interfering Shingo with a spin cycle.

Cobb hit Tour of the Islands on SANADA. Henare followed up with a death valley bomb for the pin.

Cobb and Henare continued attacking SANADA and Shingo after the match.

Cobb and Henare then held Naito down. O-Khan repeatedly hit Naito’s right knee with a chair.

The segment closed with United Empire posing over the fallen LIJ and O-Khan doing his roll call promo.

*****Intermission*****

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Satoshi Kojima defeated Jay White & Bad Luck Fale (10:05)

This was good. White and Tanahashi are the second and third best guys in the company right now, the order just depends on the night.

Tanahashi and White began with a crisp exchange. Kojima tagged in for a double tackle. Kojima and Tana flexed their pecs as they breifly had the upper hand.

Kojima went for a top rope elbow, but Gedo tripped him. White took over and mocked Kojima with machine gun chops. Kojima came back with a cutter before tagging out.

Tana hit White with a flying forearm. White blocked a slingblade attempt. They used a series of standing switches. White used a hair pull to set up an inverted dragon screw. White hit Tana with a Blade Buster for a near fall.

Tana kicked out of a cloverleaf attempt, then hit White with a dragon screw. White knocked Kojima off the apron to prevent a tag, then tagged Fale. Fale hit Tana with an elbow drop for a two count. Tana blocked a Grenade. Fale hit a lariat.

Fale went for a Bad Luck Fall, but Kojima saved. Tana hit White with a slingblade. Tana hit twist and shout to Fale. Kojima hit Fale with a lariat.

Tana followed with High Fly Flow for the pin.

White tried to attack Tana after the bell, but got caught in a cloverleaf. White tapped furiously.

Tanahashi cut a promo in English after the match. He said he accepts White’s challenge for the NEVER title, because Jay tapped to his Texas clover hold, the JTO.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: SHO & YOH defeated El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru to win the titles (20:48)

SHO and YOH entered first to new music. This was a vast downgrade from their Roppongi 3K rap by Rocky Romero.

They did a completely different match than I expected, building the whole thing around SHO and YOH selling. It was psychologically sound, but much slower than you would think. The last five minutes were very good.

YOH and Desperado began. YOH briefly had the advantage, but Desperado caught him in Numero Dos and went to work on the left leg. SHO and Kanemaru got tags and the Suzuki-gun side took the fight to the floor. SHO and YOH were whipped into the fence.

Kanemaru worked over SHO’s lower back. SHO managed a double spear and tagged YOH. Kanemaru went back after YOH’s left leg with a chop block and a figure four, but YOH reached the ropes for a break.

Kanemaru hit a moonsault and Deep Impact. SHO broke up the pin. YOH cradled Kanemaru for a two count. YOH blocked a kick and hit a Pele kick. Desperado speared YOH. SHO hit Desperado with a German. Desperado hit a spinebuster to SHO. All four men were down as they passed the 15 minute mark.

SHO and YOH hit their stereo jumping knees to Kanemaru. YOH hit Kanemaru with a one-legged dropkick. Desperado and SHO traded strikes. Desperado got hit with a 3K.

Kanemaru and YOH were still the legal men. YOH climbed to the top rope, but Kanemaru whipped SHO into the corner to stop YOH’s attack. Kanemaru hit a superplex for a near fall.

Kanemaru went for a second Deep Impact, but jumped into a superkick from YOH. SHO hit a lariat to Kanemaru. SHO and YOH hit Strong X to Kanemaru, but Desperado broke up the pin.

YOH hit something resembling a butterfly suplex and got the pin. He calls the move Direct Drive.

YOH cut a promo after the match and said that it’s been a long journey, but the IWGP Jr. Tag titles are back where they belong. He then said he wants to face Desperado for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title.

IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Will Ospreay (w/Great-O-Khan, Jeff Cobb & Aaron Henare) defeated Kota Ibushi to win the title (30:13)

A very good main event. The time flew by. I expected that Ospreay would get the title and be positioned as the top foreign heel that they really haven’t had since Kenny Omega, but I didn’t expect it to happen tonight.

Two of the great high flyers of all time opened with mat wrestling. Ibushi broke cleanly on a waistlock after Ospreay reached the ropes. Ibushi got the better of another mat sequence.

Ospreay briefly got a hammerlock applied, but Ibushi reversed into a side headlock. Ospreay reversed the side headlock into one of his own. Ibushi kipped up after a tackle. Ibushi hit a snap rana and sent Ospreay to the floor. Ibushi hit a plancha.

Back inside, Ospreay crotched Ibushi across the top rope, then kicked him to the floor. Ospreay whipped Ibushi into the barricade. Ospreay applied a kravate over the barricade. Ibushi whipped Ospreay into the barricade.

Ospreay regained control with a backdrop on the barricade and a knee drop on the apron. Ibushi made it back in after a countout tease. Ibushi made it back in after a second countout tease. Ospreay applied a head scissors on the mat, but Ibushi forced a rope break. Ibushi sold the damage to his neck and back from the backdrop and the head scissors.

Ospreay used another kravate in the ring. Ibushi tried to fire up the crowd. Ospreay hit a slam. Ibushi countered with a dropkick. Ibushi reversed a whip and hit a flying mid kick. Ibushi landed a standing moonsault for a near fall.

Ibushi hit a suplex out of a roll-up grip, then bridged for a near fall. Ibushi hit some kicks. Ospreay came back with a handspring kick. Ospreay tied Ibushi to the tree of woe and hit a dropkick.

Ospreay hit pip pip cheerio for a two count. Ospreay teased a bloody sunday, but Ibushi grabbed at Ospreay’s broken nose to stop it. An intricate series of counters and reversals ended with Ibushi hitting a lariat. Ospreay took a flip bump. Ibushi hit a last ride for a near fall.

Ibushi went for Kamigoye, but Ospreay hit a shoulder thrust to the gut to block it. They traded strikes. Ospreay hit some Kawada kicks. Ibushi went into his zombie no-sell mode, but Ospreay hammered him with a slap, then hit a bloody sunday for a two count.

Ospreay climbed to the top rope. Ibushi cut him off. Ospreay knocked Ibushi to the apron. Ibushi went for a springboard rana, but Ospreay blocked. Ibushi crashed to the ropes. Ospreay hit a shooting star with Ibushi draped over the top. Ospreay then hit a shooting star press for a near fall.

Ibushi escaped a Chelsea Grin. Ospreay went for a handspring kick. Ibushi looked as though he was going to catch Ospreay and lawn dart him into the buckle, but Ibushi slipped and they botched the spot. Ibushi tried again, but slipped again and they fell to the mat in a heap.

Ibushi went for a top rope poison rana, but Ospreay landed on his feet out of the move. Back in the center of the ring, Ibushi hit a poison rana. Ospreay rolled outside. Ospreay beat the count back in.

Ibushi hit a German from the second rope, suplexing Ospreay back into the ring. Ospreay landed right on his head. Ospreay kicked out at two. Ibushi went for a bomaye, but Ospreay turned it into a Spanish Fly.

Ospreay went for an Oscutter, but Ibushi blocked. Ospreay hit an Oscutter on his second attempt, but Ibushi kicked out. Ospreay hit the Chelsea Grin. He went for a Stormbreaker, but Ibushi reversed into a Kamigoye. Ibushi hit a second Kamigoye, but Ospreay kicked out.

Ibushi went for a third Kamigoye, but Ospreay cradled him for a near fall. Ospreay hit a v-trigger and a Hidden Blade, then hit a Stormbreaker for the pin.

**********

Cobb hit Ibushi with a Tour of the Islands after the match.

Ospreay cut a promo. He said he wants to take this time to apologize — to absolutely nobody. He said Unted Empire has all the power now. He said he wants revenge for what happened at Wrestle Kingdom and called out Okada.

Okada came to the ring. Okada grabbed a mic and fired up the crowd. Shingo Takagi then appeared and took the mic from Okada.

Shingo said Ospreay wants revenge for losing to Okada, but nobody remembers that match. He said that people remember that Okada lost to Shingo in the New Japan Cup. Shingo said if Okada gets a shot, he should get a shot first.

Shingo, speaking English, challenged Ospreay for the title. He said when he beats Ospreay, Okada can challenge Shingo next.

Ospreay took the mic. He said first, Shingo, then he’s coming for Okada.

Okada and Shingo left, then O-Khan cut the roll call promo. Confetti fell to close the show.

NJPW has announced that their annual Sakura Genesis event will return in April.

The company announced that Sakura Genesis will take place on April 4. It will take place at Sumo Hall, the first NJPW event in the venue since the G1 Climax finals in October.

Sakura Genesis replaced Invasion Attack as the annual April event in 2017.

The winner of the New Japan Cup tournament, which runs during March, usually challenges for the championship of their choosing at Sakura Genesis. The tournament runs this year from March 5 through March 21.

Sakura Genesis in 2018 was headlined by Kazuchika Okada successfully defending the IWGP Heavyweight title against Zack Sabre Jr.

NJPW cancels remainder of New Japan Cup tour due to coronavirus

The remainder of the New Japan Cup tour has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak in Japan.

NJPW announced this morning that following a meeting by a specialist government taskforce, they have decided to cancel the rest of the New Japan Cup tour that was originally scheduled to resume on March 16 in Toyama. They will make announcements about cards after March 22 “upon careful monitoring of this developing situation.”

The company stated that they will announce refund procedures for the events “soon”. They will also continue to run programs on New Japan World featuring talent. NJPW last ran a show on February 26, a New Japan Road event.

The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a number of promotions cancelling events or running shows without an audience. Earlier today, All Japan Pro Wrestling cancelled shows that were scheduled to take place starting on March 13 through March 22.

The winner of the New Japan Cup tournament was scheduled to challenge Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental championships at Sakura Genesis on March 31.

Will Ospreay questionable for New Orleans after injury

Will Ospreay appears to have suffered a neck injury in today’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight title match against Marty Scurll at Sumo Hall in Tokyo.

The match, arguably the best match thus far of 2018, was going along fine. Ospreay was selling his neck but that was the story of the match, and late in the match delivered a Spanish fly off the apron. In rotating, his head hit the apron and he suffered a bad gash and was bleeding heavily.

The doctor immediately came out and it was clear he was concerned, but Ospreay wouldn’t let him near him and continued to wrestle for several more minutes before retaining his title with the OsCutter

Believe it or not, Ospreay said he felt fine during the entire match, but when he got backstage when the match was over, he said the pain was excruciating.

He said he was determined to be able to do his matches in New Orleans this coming week, but that may not be possible. He is currently in the process of flying back from Japan and will be getting his neck checked out shortly after he lands.

NJPW Sakura Genesis live results: Kazuchika Okada vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

Zack Sabre Jr. defeated four men to win the New Japan Cup. Now only Kazuchika Okada stands in the way between him and the IWGP Heavyweight title.

Sumo Hall will be home tonight to Okada’s 11th title defense. If he is successful, he’ll tie with Hiroshi Tanahashi for the most consecutive successful defenses in the title’s history. Sabre has been outright dominant over the last month, with no one being able to solve the riddle of how to escape from his submissions. Sabre worked on Okada’s arms one day ago at the Road to Sakura Genesis show, so that may play a part in tonight’s match.

Other title matches include Will Ospreay defending the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title against Marty Scurll. El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru will defend the Junior Tag Team titles against Roppongi 3K and BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi in a three way. And Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa will defend their NEVER Six-Man titles against Togi Makabe, Michael Elgin & Ryusuke Taguchi.

The latest in Bullet Club drama will also transpire as The Young Bucks will open the show against Chase Owens & Yujiro Takahashi. Meanwhile, Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi will take on Cody & Hangman Page in the semi-main event.

Join us for live coverage at 3 a.m. ET. There will be English commentary by Kevin Kelly and Don Callis.

THE YOUNG BUCKS DEFEATED CHASE OWENS & YUJIRO TAKAHASHI

Owens and Takahashi jumped the Bucks after they turned their backs after the teams traded handshakes. The Bucks fired back with dropkicks and stereo planchas. Matt was wearing his weight belt and selling his back.

Owens and Takahashi worked over Nick with strikes. Owens picked up two nearfalls before Nick was able to make a tag to Matt, who ran wild with kicks. Matt applied the sharpshooter to OWens, but Takahashi broke it up. Matt hit a standing moonsault on Owens, while Nick hit a slingshot legdrop on Yujiro.

The Bucks went for the Indytaker, but Yujiro pulled Nick off the apron, and Owens and Takahashi worked over Matt. Owens went for a package piledriver on Matt, but Nick broke it up. The Bucks hit Owens with superkicks, and Nick did a tornado DDT off the apron to the floor on Yujiro. Matt applied the sharpshooter on Owens and got the tapout.

After the match, both teams shook hands. This was a fine opener, but was more about furthering the Bucks storyline than going for a blow away match.

TOMOHIRO ISHII & TORU YANO DEFEATED TAKASHI IIZUKA & TAICHI

Taichi attacked Ishii with his staff before the bell, while Iizuka took Yano outside. Iizuka used a chair on Ishii and Yano while the referee’s back was turned. They brawled on the floor and into the crowd, and Taichi used a mallet to hit Ishii in the head.

Suzuki-gun continued to break rules, as Iizuka used a rope form his trunks to choke Ishii. Ishii sold a lot more for Taichi than you might expect. Ishii and Iizuka bit each other, and Ishii ran Iizuka and Taichi into each other. He made the tag to Yano, who untied the turnbuckle pad. Taichi whipped Yano into the exposed buckle, and Iizuka worked him over with the rope.

Yano used a backslide for a nearfall. Taichi shoved the ref down, and Yano ducked Iizuka’s iron glove, hit a low blow, and rolled him up for the pin with an assist from Ishii. This was not a particularly good brawl.

BAD LUCK FALE, TAMA TONGA & TANGA LOA DEFEATED TOGI MAKABE, MICHAEL ELGIN & RYUSUKE TAGUCHI TO RETAIN THE NEVER OPENWEIGHT SIX-MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Elgin and Loa started off, trading chops. Elgin applied a headlock. Loa hit a belly-to-back, but Elgin did not release the hold. Elgin hit a powerslam and a missile dropkick from the middle rope. Fale cut Elgin off from the apron and pulled him to the floor. Fale choked Elgin with a microphone cord, before tossing him back into the ring.

The Guerillas of Destiny remained in control until Fale missed a charge into the corner, allowing Elgin to tag in Makabe. Makabe dropped Fale with a lariat, and scored a nearfall on the big man. Fale hit Makabe with a shoulder block, leading to a double down.

Taguchi and Tonga got tags, and Taguchi ran wild with hip attacks on Tonga and Loa. Taguchi’s team did their clothesline train spot, but the Guerillas pulled Elgin and Makabe out of the ring and worked over Taguchi. Taguchi’s team recovered, allowing him to hit Tonga with a 619.

While Fale, Elgin, Loa and Makabe brawled on the floor, Tonga was able to recover, and hit Taguchi with a gun stun, leading to the pinfall victory. This started in slow motion, but the last couple of minutes were fun.

HIROSHI TANAHASHI, DAVID FINLAY & JUICE ROBINSON DEFEATED HIROOKI GOTO, JAY WHITE & YOSHI-HASHI

Finlay and White started off. They traded strikes, then the action spilled outside. Finlay whipped White into the barricade, and took him back inside. White lawn-darted Finlay into the turnbuckle, and all six men brawled on the floor.

Back inside, YOSHI-HASHI and Goto worked over Finlay. Finlay escaped a chinlock and hit a dropkick, allowing him to tag in Juice. Juice hit his jabs on Goto, and hit a full nelson bomb. Juice hit a high cross off the top on Goto for a nearfall. Juice got the best of a lariat exchange with Goto, but Goto recovered and hit an ushigoroshi, and both men went down.

Tana and YOSHI-HASHI tagged in, and Tana hit a dragon screw. He went for a slingblade, but YOSHI-HASHI ducked, and the CHAOS team worked over The Ace. Finlay nailed White with a cutter, Juice hit Goto with Pulp Friction, and those four spilled outside, leaving Tana and YOSHI-HASHI the legal men.

Tana hit slingblade, and a High Fly Flow, and pinned YOSHI-HASHI. After the match, Finlay stared down White, reminding him that their U.S. title match is just weeks away. This was good, solid, by-the-numbers stuff. Finlay, in particular, showed great intensity.

MINORU SUZUKI & KILLER ELITE SQUAD DEFEATED TETSUYA NAITO, EVIL & SANADA

Suzuki and Naito paired off while Killer Elite Squad and SANADA and EVIL went to the floor. Suzuki slapped Naito, who responded by spitting in Suzuki’s face. Suzuki looked to attack, but Naito and SANADA hit him with dropkicks, and the LIJ team went to work on Suzuki.

Naito worked Suzuki over in the corner, before Suzuki slipped out of the way of an attack and applied a rope-assisted armbar. Both teams brawled to the floor, and Suzuki and Naito went into the crowd. Suzuki used a chair on Naito, while Archer terrorized a child at ringside. Back inside, Suzuki applied a kneebar on Naito, who was barely able to make the ropes.

Smith tagged in and hit a powerslam for a nearfall. Smith missed a top rope legdrop, and Naito hit a tornado DDT on Smith, and an enziguri on an interfering Suzuki. SANADA got a tag and hit a plancha, before Smith cut him off. Smith hit a bridging suplex for a nearfall. SANADA came back with a springboard dropkick after taking the Ric Flair corner bump.

EVIL and Archer tagged in, and traded some hard-hitting offense. Archer used a Boss Man slam, but SANADA jumped in to assist his partner. EVIL and SANADA went for the Magic Killer, but Smith cut them off, and Smith and Archer hit SANADA with the Killer Bomb.

While Suzuki grounded Naito with a kneebar on the floor, Smith and Archer nailed EVIL with a Killer Bomb to pick up the win. So Killer Elite Squad vs. EVIL and SANADA looks to be the direction for the IWGP tag titles.

Naito and Suzuki cut promos after the match, teasing a future Intercontinental title match between the two.

This was excellent. Suzuki looked good, and Naito felt like a transcendent star for the first time since Wrestle Kingdom.

YOSHINOBU KANEMARU & DESPERADO DEFEATED SHO & YOH, & HIROMU TAKAHASHI & BUSHI TO RETAIN THE IWGP JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

SHO and YOH dominated thr early going, inlcuding hitting stereo topes on Desperado and Kanemaru before the bell. BUSHI and Takahashi took control, working over YOH. Kanemaru and Desperado broke up an STF by BUSHI on YOH, and continued to work him over.

YOH was finally able to tag SHO, who hit a dropkick on Kanemaru and a spinebuster on Desperado. Takahashi blind tagged himself in, and ate a spear from SHO. YOH got a tag and hit a flying forearm on Takahashi. SHO and YOH got a nearfall, and SHO hit deadlift suplexes on Takahashi and BUSHI.

Rocky Romero jumped into the ring and Takahashi put the boots to him. Takahashi and BUSHI double-teamed SHO and YOH, leading to a nearfall. Takahashi hit Time Bomb on SHO, but Kanemaru pulled the referee out of the ring as he attempted to count the pinfall.

With the referee out, Desperado jumped in and hit BUSHI, Takahashi and SHO with belt shots. Although he was not the legal man, the referee recovered and counted the pinfall as Desperado covered SHO.

SHO and YOH were impressive as always, but this was missing something, it didn’t have a lot of heat, and the screwy finish didn’t help.

WILL OSPREAY DEFEATED MARTY SCURLL TO RETAIN THE IWGP JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Scurll applied an arm-wringer. Ospreay flipped out of it, but Scurll re-applied it immediately. They did a great sequence with Ospreay flipping and Scurll serving as a base. Scurll teased the chicken wing, and Ospreay teased the Oscutter, leading to a stalemate. Ospreay ducked two lariat attempts, Scurll went outside, and Ospreay hit a space flying tiger drop to the floor.

Scurll recovered and hit a superkick on Ospreay from the apron. Scurll wrenched on Ospreay’s neck and sent him into the barricade. Back inside, Scurll continued working over the neck with a draping DDT and a torture rack. Ospreay slipped out of a Gory special at the ten minute mark, but Scurll continued his assault on the neck.

Ospreay slipped out of a chinlock and hit a rebound enziguri. Ospreay really started selling intense neck pain, and was just barely able to hit another enziguri and a standing shooting star. Ospreay hit Cheeky Nandos and a german. Scurll went for a suplex, but Ospreay turned it into a stunner. Scurll developed a bruise under his right eye.

Ospreay covered, but Scurll bridged out and hit a pumphandle neckbreaker, getting a nearfall off of it. Scurll hit a discus forearm and a lariat for another nearfall. Scurll went for a neckbreaker, but Ospreay escaped.

They flipped to the apron, then to the floor, and Scurll hit a jumping tombstone on the floor. Scurll tossed Ospreay back inside and got another nearfall. Scurll hit a neckbreaker for yet another nearfall at the twenty minute mark.

A strike exchange ended with Ospreay hitting an enziguri and a powerbomb. Ospreay hit a Robinson Special, and teased the Oscutter, but Scurll pushed him to the floor, and he hit his neck on the apron on his way down.

Ospreay recovered and teased a suplex on the apron, but Scurll hit an enziguri. Ospreay hit a Spanish Fly to the floor, but smashed his head on the apron on the way down, busting him open, and crushing his neck at a grisly angle.

Scurll beat the count back inside, and Ospreay hit a Phoenix Splash for a nearfall. Ospreay went for a shooting star, but Scurll avoided it, and hit a kick to the back of the head for a nearfall. Scurll went for the chicken wing, but Ospreay flipped over for a cover and a nearfall. Ospreay hit the Oscutter, but could not make a cover.

Scurll was up first, and hit a spike piledriver for a nearfall. Scurll did the finger break spot on both of Ospreay’s hands, and stomped on his head, before applying the chicken wing. Ospreay was just able to make the ropes, breaking the hold at the thirty minute mark.

Ospreay turned another tombstone attempt into a stunner, and hit the Oscutter for the win.

This was insane. The storytelling was incredible. Ospreay finally got a big time win over Scurll, but at what cost?

Ospreay cut a promo after the match, challenging KUSHIDA, who was at ringside doing commentary. KUSHIDA accepted the challenge.

CODY & HANGMAN PAGE DEFEATED THE GOLDEN LOVERS

Kenny and Cody started off, but Cody tried to cheap shot Ibushi, then begged off and tagged in Page. Cody tried to cheap shot Omega from the apron. Omega hit a plancha to the floor on Cody and Page. Omega and Ibushi doubled up on Cody with strikes, but Page jumped in and cut them off. Ibushi and Omega teased the Cross Slash stereo moonsaults, but had to settle for stereo ranas on the floor.

Cody cut Omega off and nailed him with a chair on the floor, then went to work on Ibushi in the ring. Page and Cody cut the ring in half and worked over Ibushi, concentrating their attacks on Ibushi’s arms. Ibushi hit a dropkick, and made a tag to Kenny, who ran into a double team buzzsaw. Page hit a neckbreaker from the middle rope for a nearfall.

Page hit a pumphandle fallaway slam for a nearfall, and Cody continued the attack with a butterfly lock. Cody tossed Omega to the floor, and pulled a table from under the ring. They teased a suplex on the table, but Kenny suplexed Cody on the floor. Page made the save and slammed both Golden Lovers on the table.

Page set Kenny up on the table, and Cody teased comig off the top through the table, but he was interrupted by the Bucks, who came out to express their displeasure with all of this. Omega recovered as the Bucks left, and the action returned to the ring. Omega hit a wheel kick on Cody, busting him open over his left eye.

Ibushi got a hot tag and ran wild on Cody. The Lovers both hit moonsaults and made a cover, but Cody kicked out. The Lovers hit Cross Slash, and Omega power bombed Cody into a german from Ibushi. Cody escaped a Golden Shower, and hit a suplex on Ibushi. Cody tagged Page, who hit a dropkick on Kenny into a standing shooting star on Ibushi for a nearfall.

The match broke down into a four-way, with Omega hitting a V-Trigger and a snap dragon suplex. Cody went to the top, but Ibushi hit a backflip kick. They teased a One-Winged Angel through the table, but Page made the save. Page and Cody hit Ibushi with a springboard Doomsday Device, and Page sent Omega through the table.

Ibushi countered with a double backflip kick, and hit a Last Ride on Cody for a nearfall. Ibushi went for Kamigoye, but Page grabbed his leg from the floor, and Cody rolled Ibushi up, stealing the win.

Cody and Page tried to attack Ibushi with a chair after the match, but Omega made the save and ran them off.

This served its purpose in furthering the Elite’s stroyline, and was different enough from the previous bout that they didn’t have trouble following a match of the year candidate.

KAZUCHIKA OKADA DEFEATED ZACK SABRE JR. TO RETAIN THE IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

The first five minutes of the bout were spent on the mat, with Sabre using his catch style and wide arsenal of holds. The story they were telling was that while Sabre is the master of that style, that Okada was also comfortable on the ground, and willing to try to beat Sabre at his own game. Okada got a pair of one counts that Sabre quickly bridged out of.

Okada tried for a cloverleaf, but Sabre turned it into a heel hook, then a kneebar, but Okada slipped to a waistlock, and again briefly got Sabre down for a one count. Okada slipped out of a heel hook and a surfboard and got a two count, and hit a European uppercut on the break, the first strike of the match.

Sabre applied an abdominal stretch, and transitioned to a cobra twist, but Okada reached the ropes. Sabre grapevined Okada’s right leg, and used his legs to torque and twist Okada’s left leg. Okada fought back with strikes and went for the dropkick, but Sabre turned it into a submission attempt, forcing Okada to fight to the ropes.

Okada taunted Sabre, and dared him to strike him. Sabre was happy to oblige, and hit European uppercuts, but in doing so, played right into Okada’s hands. Okada hit a flapjack, a big boot, a back elbow in the corner, and a DDT. Sabre rolled to the apron and applied an octopus hold on the ropes. Okada fought back and kicked Sabre to the floor.

Okada sent Sabre over the barricade and hit a running crossbody over the fence, into the crowd. Red Shoes started the twenty count, so Okada brought the action back inside. Sabre applied a headscissors and applied a stretch muffler, but Okada reached the ropes, forcing a break.

Sabre went to work on Okada’s right arm, teasing that Okada wouldn’t be able to hit the Rainmaker with a bad arm. Sabre missed a charge into the corner, but avoided the dropkick and applied a guillotine. Okada tried to turn it into a slam, but Sabre turned it into a rear naked choke. Okada slithered out and hit a neckbreaker.

Okada hit a scoop slam and went for the flying elbow, but Sabre caught him off the top and turned it into a cross armbreaker. Okada rolled through and reached the ropes, but more damage was done to the right arm. They traded forearm strikes, before Okada was able to land the shotgun dropkick, leading to a double down.

Okada turned a backslide into a Rainmaker attempt, but Sabre caught him and went to work on the arm. Okada slipped out, hit a short dropkick, then his trademark dropkick and a tombstone. Sabre grabbed the right arm from the mat, and used wrist control to enter pinning combinations and score two close nearfalls.
Sabre got the best of a strike exchange, but Okada was able to hit another dropkick.

Seemingly unphased, Sabre applied a cross armbreaker, then transitioned to a triangle choke. Okada powered up and hit a Rainmaker, and maintianed wrist control after impact, allowing him to hit a second Rainmaker.

Okada went for a third, but Sabre applied an octopus. Okada slipped out, hit a tombstone, and a third Rainmaker, then covered Sabre for the win.

With the victory, Okada tied Tanahashi for the most consecutive IWGP Heavyweight title defenses. And so, as Gedo cut a promo after the match, Tanahashi entered the ring, the crowd chanting his name. The Ace challenged Okada for his IWGP title.

Two matches for NJPW Sakura Genesis confirmed

Two matches have been confirmed for Sakura Genesis on April 1.

The main event was officially announced today as Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight title against New Japan Cup winner Zack Sabre Jr.. If Okada were to defeat Sabre, he would tie Hiroshi Tanahashi’s record of most IWGP Heavyweight title defenses in a single reign at 11. With submission wins over Tetsuya Naito, Kota Ibushi, SANADA and Tanahashi, however, Sabre will prove to be someone very difficult to beat.

The other match announced for the card is a triple threat match pitting new IWGP Jr. tag team champions Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru against BUSHI and Hiromu Takahashi and Roppongi 3K in a triple threat match. This would be a rematch from the 46th anniversary show that took place back on March 6, where Desperado and Kanemario won the championships from Roppongi 3K. All three teams ended up in an angle at the New Japan Cup finals where Roppongi 3K ended up standing tall over the other two teams.

There were several angles shot during the New Japan Cup finals that may or may not lead to matches on this show. Minoru Suzuki and Tetsuya Naito spent most of their match on the show brawling with one another, and ended up brawling into the press area once the match was over. Meanwhile, Juice Robinson pinned Hirooki Goto in a tag match, making it clear that he was the top contender for the NEVER title. The Killer Elite Squad also called out current IWGP tag team champions EVIL and SANADA, though EVIL is still out with a broken orbital bone.

Sakura Genesis will air at 3 a.m. EDT on April 1. It will have English commentary.

NJPW Sakura Genesis live results: Okada vs. Shibata

Big title matches headline New Japan’s Sakura Genesis PPV late tonight, streaming live on New Japan World from Sumo Hall. The show will feature English commentary, with Kevin Kelly and Don Callis calling the action.

2017 New Japan Cup winner Katsuyori Shibata challenges IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada in the main event. Aside from a G1 bout from 2013, they have been kept largely apart, which should make it an intriguing bout.

In the co-main event, we have a Wrestle Kingdom rematch as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi defends against KUSHIDA. Hirooki Goto will defend the NEVER title against Zack Sabre Jr, Tencozy defends their IWGP tag team titles against ROH’s War Machine, and Suzuki-gun comrades Taichi & Yoshinobu Kanemaru defend against Jado & Gedo.

The elusive Tiger Mask W will also make an appearance, teaming with Tiger Mask IV, Togi Makabe & Yuji Nagata to square off against Chase Owens, Tama Tonga, Tanga Roa & Yujiro Takahashi.

Join us for live coverage starting at 2:40 a.m. EST/11:40 p.m. PST.

**********

David Finlay, Jushin Thunder Liger & Manabu Nakanishi defeated Katsuya Kitamura, Tomoyuki Oka & Hirai Kawato

Young lions jumped their opponents at the bell. Oka and Kitamura put Finlay and Nakanishi in stereo torture racks. Good opener, showcased all the young lions pretty fairly. Kawato looked the most solid out of the three, but Oka and Kitamura will go far if they continue to improve, if only for their size. Finlay came in and hit the diving stunner on Kitamura for the win.

Kawato shoves around Liger after the match, continuing what seems to be a feud of sorts between the two.

Yujiro Takahashi, Chase Owens, Tama Tonga and Tanga Roa defeated Tiger Mask, Tiger Mask W, Yuji Nagata & Togi Makabe

Standard tag team match which built up to a Tiger Mask W save. He wiped out his opponents on the outside with the Golden Triangle moonsault. Tiger Mask looks to go for the finish, but Owens distracts him long enough to walk right into a gun stun by Tama Tonga for the win.

YOSHI-HASHI and Roppongi Vice defeated Minoru Suzuki, Taka Michinoku & El Desperado

Suzuki jumps YOSHI-HASHI as he poses during his intro, which led to a lot of the match having him be the center of the match. This was fine, but kinda short and never felt super hot or anything. YH fought off against Suzuki and ended up getting the win with Karma on Taka Michinoku for the win.

Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Taichi defeated Gedo & Jado to retain the IWGP Junior tag team titles

Gedo & Jado started things early as they took down the faces with dual crossfaces but got their comeuppance on the outside. Kanemaru took out Gedo with a legdrop on top of the barricade and Jado was jumped after a distraction by Taichi’s valet.

Jado made the hot tag and after putting Kanemaru in the crossface nearly had it won, but Desperado pulled the referee out and freely ran in to interfere. Roppongi Vice came in for the save and wiped it out Desperado. Everybody got in at one point, with the finale being Taichi hitting Jado in the throat with the microphone stand.

He blasted Jado with the superkick and Kanemaru followed with the moonsault, but Jado kicked out. Finally Kanemaru drilled Jado with the DDT off the top rope for the win. Subpar by New Japan title match standards, these four guys don’t mix together well style wise and most of it was ref bumps, brawling and setting up for the future title match.

Roppongi Vice came back in after the match and argued Taichi’s use over the ring bell hammer. Taichi shrugged. They challenged for the junior tag team titles, setting up the next title program.

Kenny Omega and Bad Luck Fale defeated Tomohiro Ishii and Toru Yano

Pretty solid match. A lot of the early stuff was Yano comedy, undoing the turnbuckles and the like. Omega and Ishii worked together until Yano low blowed Omega while he was going for the One Winged Angel. Omega rallied back after he whipped Ishii into one of the exposed turnbuckles, hit a few knee strikes then defeated Ishii with the One Winged Angel.

Juice Robinson, Ryusuke Taguchi, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Ricochet defeated  EVIL, SANADA, BUSHI & Tetsuya Naito

I liked this match, probably the best out of the tag matches tonight. Lots of good back and forth action. Naito went for the Destino on Robinson but Tanahashi wiped him out with the slingblade. Everyone came in for a bit of offense before it came back down to Naito and Robinson. Naito lifted him up and went for a swift kick to the netheregions but Robinson grabbed his leg, hit Naito with a big punch and pinned him with the Pulp Friction for the biggest win of his career.

Robinson called out Naito after the match, straight up challenging him to a match for the Intercontinental title.

War Machine defeated Tencozy to win the IWGP Tag Team titles

Rowe and Hanson work over Kojima a good while before  finally Kojima gets an opening and tags in Tenzan who cleans house on Rowe. Rowe went to do a double press slam on both Kojima and Tenzan but they countered and laid him out, then moved when Hanson went for a splash, hitting his partner in the process.

Hanson mounted a comeback but missed a moonsault and ate a cutter. Rowe is tagged in as Hanson hits an assisted pop up powerslam as Rowe covers for a nearfall. Hanson wiped out Tenzan on the outside with a suicide dive. Kojima started to rally and came back with a giant lariat that bent Rowe in half.

Kojima went for a second lairat but Rowe countered with a German and a knee strike. Hanson launched off the top rope as they hit Fallout to win the IWGP tag team titles in a really good back and forth match.

Tenzan came up to the new champions after the match, saying they wanted one more match. Hanson and Rowe agreed as they shook hands with their opponents and bowed.

Hirooki Goto defeated Zack Sabre Jr. to retain the NEVER Openweight title

I thought this was a pretty good match, not great but very well worked one and Sabre’s offense is so great. Afters some back and forth to start, Sabre gains advantage and focuses on the arm, wrenching the fingers, then takes apart one of Goto’s legs. He twists and torques the body parts in all sorts of painful ways. Goto gets a brief flurry of offense but Sabre transitions into a guillotine, trying to kimura the arm. Goto counters with a suplex.

Goto went for an elbow, but Sabre grabs one arm, then both and torks one shoulder until Goto gets to the ropes. Sabre continued to wrench until Goto hit the ushigiroshi. Desperado comes in to distrct Goto, leaving him open to be jumped by Suzuki. Goto fights them off, but again is open to Sabre making a comeback.

He goes for a gogoplata but Goto lifts him up and hits a one armed powerbomb. He follows with the GTR to retain the title.

Goto raises the title after the match in front of Suzuki. He didn’t take too kindly to that, making a beeline towards Goto and starting a pull apart brawl. Needless to say, we have a new NEVER title program.

Hiromu Takahashi defeated KUSHIDA to retain the IWGP Jr. title

This didn’t even get two mintues. KUSHIDA came out flying with a tope con hilo off the top rope to the floor, wiping out Takahashi. KUSHIDA is on the apron when Takahashi counters with a giant sunset flip bomb to the floor. Takahashi takes him inside, hits a running death valley driver into the turnbuckle then pins KUSHIDA with the time bomb just like that. For such a short match, this was pretty fast paced with some crazy moves.

Kinda surprising the co-main was so short, but I’m probably thinking this is just a storyline for KUSHIDA as he enters the Best of the Super Juniors next month.

Takahashi berates KUSHIDA after the match, posing with the title and eating his wrist tape with a watch drawn on. He continues to beat upon KUSHIDA’s prone body until Ricochet runs in to make the save. He grabs a mic, saying it’s time for the belt to go where it should have gone a long time ago, around his waist. Takahashi slithers away, not really ready to answer.

Kazuchika Okada defeated Katsuyori Shibata to retain the IWGP title

This was an incredible match, I think even exceeding Okada/Omega from the Tokyo Dome earlier this year. As far as intensity goes, this had the most out of anything I’ve seen in a long time. Just stiff, brutal shots and incredible psychology and storytelling. This is one of those matches that you need to go out of your way and see because it’s that good — everything just felt like it was on point and couldn’t be executed any better.

Shibata outwrestled Okada early, sending him to the outside. Okada doesn’t do a clean break and they’re off, striking one another with hard shots. Shibata grinds Okada back down, focusing on the knee but Okada strikes back by crotching Shibata, then sending him down to the floor with a dropkick.

Shibata starts to absorb punches until he strikes back with one that sends him to his knees. He pelts Okada with punches, sending him to the floor and drilling him with a dropkick, then does it again with the barricade on the outside.

Okada makes a comeback, doing the rainmaker pose and going for the rainmaker but Shibata counters with an STO. Incredible striking follows. Every strike in this match so far has been on point, in fact. Okada goes for a pin but Shibata grabbed an arm and wrenches it in with an armbar.

Okada escapes as they get into another scary slap battle. Okada manages to get Shibata into the corner and hits a running dropkick. Shibata follows with a dropkick, similar to Okada’s. He goes for the penalty kick but Okada follows with a dropkick.

They get back up and start trading some insane offense, including Shibata dropping Okada right on his neck with a German. Okada goes for the rainmaker but Shibata peppers him with kicks. Okada manages to hit it anyway, but Shibata no sells it and hits a giant headbutt, splitting himself open in the process. Gruesome.

After a long abdominal stretch, Shibata kicks Okada in the chest and goes for the sleeper. Okada fights it, getting to his feet, but falling to the floor. He gets back up, but Shibata drills him with a half nelson suplex. He motions like he’s going for the rainmaker but instead slaps him and just DRILLS him with kicks. He goes to whip Okada but he retaliates with the rainmaker.

Maintaining wrist control, Shibata tries to fight back but knows he’s in trouble. Shibata lifts his arm like he is going to block the rainmaker but Okada gets it anyway and pins him to retain the title. Incredible.

Okada prepares to celebrate with the title when Bad Luck Fale ran in and beat him down. He said a bad word on the mic then laid him out with the Bad Luck Fall. Yep, he challenged Okada. Kind of weird as they didn’t even telegraph it with the booking tonight, but I guess we can just go to this well again for a while.

NJPW Road to SG results: NEVER six-man titles on the line

Here are this morning’s results for the final Road to Sakura Genesis show before the PPV itself takes place on Sunday morning. This aired live from Korakuen Hall on New Japan World.

– El Desperado, Takashi Iizuka & Taka Michinoku defeated Hirai Kawato, Jushin Thunder Liger & Manabu Nakanishi when Michinoku submitted Kawato with a crossface.

Kawato jumped the heels at the bell. He scored a ton of near falls towards the end as he battled with Michinoku.

– Yujiro Takahashi & Chase Owens defeated Tomoyuki Oka & Yuji Nagata when Owens pinned Oka with the package piledriver.

This was a hot match with a lot of fast-paced action.

– War Machine & David Finlay defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima & Tiger Mask when Rowe pinned Tenzan after hitting Fallout.

This was another solid match with a lot of heat. The finish was interesting as it gives War Machine the advantage heading into the IWGP tag title match at Sakura Genesis.

– Toru Yano, Hirooki Goto, Jado & Gedo defeated Taichi, Minoru Suzuki, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Zack Sabre Jr. when Yano pinned Taichi following a cane shot to the groin.

Yano’s usual antics led to the finish. It was fine, but not as interesting as the last few matches. Suzuki beat up some of the young lions with chairs after the match.

– Kenny Omega & Bad Luck Fale defeated Tomohiro Ishii & Baretta when Fale pinned Baretta with the grenade.

Baretta looked really good here. It was a good tag team bout overall with solid heat.

– Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi defeated KUSHIDA & Juice Robinson when Naito pinned Robinson following a low blow and the Destino.

Early in the match there was a wild brawl where KUSHIDA did a running missile dropkick onto Takahashi that sent him through the guardrail. This set the tone of the match, as it was all action and by far one of the best matches of the night.

– Kazuchika Okada & YOSHI-HASHI defeated Togi Makabe & Katsuyori Shibata when Okada pinned Makabe following the Rainmaker.

They had a good, standard tag team match.

Shibata and Okada had a staredown after the match. As Shibata started to leave, Okada sat down and did Shibata’s pose, mocking him. Shibata didn’t like this one bit, dashing to the ring and kicking Okada square in the back. He went for the penalty kick, but Okada countered with the tombstone. He cut a promo on Shibata before leaving.

– Ryusuke Taguchi, Ricochet & Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI to win the NEVER six-man tag titles when Ricochet pinned BUSHI after hitting a lifting DDT.

This was a long, very good main event that built well and had some great action, especially towards the finish. Tanahashi had it won with the High Fly Flow, but the heels ganged up on him. BUSHI went to mist Ricochet but it hit SANADA instead. After an assist by Taguchi, Ricochet hit the benadryller but BUSHI kicked out. Ricochet finally won it with the lifting DDT.
