Pat McAfee addresses Gunther’s WWE Raw attack

After being choked out by Gunther on Raw last night, Pat McAfee addressed the angle on his ESPN show.

Tuesday’s edition of The Pat McAfee Show opened with McAfee speaking in kayfabe as he addressed Gunther’s attack. McAfee claimed that he went to the hospital last night after being choked out but was deemed to be okay.

“Thank you for all the positive prayers and vibes for this here neck that Gunther snatched up and chocked me out on Monday Night Raw, the Raw after Mania last night,” McAfee said. “I went to a medical facility local over there in Las Vegas. I thought maybe I was going to have something with the C2/C3 maybe, up here, something in the neck, because of how it felt. But instead I was deemed a-okay. I certainly lost consciousness last night though as the entire world watched on.”

Gunther, who dropped the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso at WrestleMania, appeared on Raw last night and was furious about his loss. He confronted the commentary team and then snapped when Cole brought up him tapping out. Gunther started to attack Cole until McAfee made the save. He then put McAfee in a sleeper and refused to break the hold.

As part of the angle, McAfee’s co-hosts of The Pat McAfee Show jumped the rail but were held back by security. McAfee thanked them for trying to help him.

“I appreciate you boys trying to get in there as I was blindsided while trying to stick up for Michael Cole as this Austrian assh*le was attacking me,” he said today. “But there was 45 security people on you guys. There was nobody [on me] — I’m getting my life choked out of me, what am I supposed to do? Well, I found out quickly that there ain’t really much you can do whenever Gunther’s got that thing on you. He had his legs wrapped around me at one time… I felt my body slithering away.”

It’s unknown if WWE is planning any further physicality between Gunther and McAfee, but McAfee said in his promo today that he’s ready for whatever comes.

“Everybody who said that they’re happy it happened to me, I hope we meet in person so I can punch you in the f*cking face. I was sticking up for Michael Cole. He grabbed up Michael Cole. He was going to choke out Michael Cole? Yeah right, can’t be having that. So what happens next here now? I don’t know, you tell me. Just know that I’m bout it, bout it for whatever. And if you think that choking me out is going to end me, you’re wrong. If you think you were going to bury me publicly and I’m going to quit showing up, you’re wrong. But I know you’re not going to mess with Michael Cole and get away with it. I don’t care how big, strong, intimidating, how good your rear naked choke is — I don’t care about any of that, okay? Michael Cole is a good man. We appreciate Michael Cole. And whenever you start attacking him, things like that are going to happen.”

Joe Tessitore filled in for McAfee after the attack last night and called the rest of the show with Cole.

Gunther attacks Michael Cole, chokes out Pat McAfee on WWE Raw

Gunther took his anger out on the Raw announce team.

During the Raw following WrestleMania 41, Gunther emerged at the ringside area through the crowd as they started to chant “you tapped out.” An angry Gunther confronted Michael Cole about his situation. Cole responded that he wasn’t the one who tapped out on Saturday. The enraged former champion then went in on the attack, putting Cole in a chokehold. Pat McAfee went to save his commentary partner, only for Gunther to let go of Cole and attack McAfee, putting him in a choke as well. WWE officials came in to break things up as Gunther had McAfee on the ground.

The next several minutes saw officials help McAfee to the back, with Cole nearby. As McAfee was taken to the trainer’s room, Pearce asked Cole to take the rest of the night off. Cole rejected the idea, saying he wasn’t going to let a bully tell him not to have opinions or enjoy WrestleMania weekend. He eventually returned to the announce table with Joe Tessitore.

Jey Uso defeated Gunther at Saturday’s WrestleMania 41, shockingly submitting the Ring General with a rear naked choke. Earlier on Raw, Uso celebrated his championship win with the returning Sami Zayn and his twin brother Jimmy.

Pat McAfee in Glasgow, Scotland for WWE Raw

Pat McAfee has traveled to Glasgow, Scotland, for tonight’s WWE Raw.

McAfee missed last week’s show from Brussels, Belgium, where he was replaced at the commentary table by Corey Graves. During today’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee revealed that he made the trip to Glasgow, where Raw will air from the OVO Hydro.

“I’ve never been in Scotland. This is my first time over here and, obviously, we have Monday Night Raw here tonight on Netflix. I believe it kicks off 4 PM Eastern, 8 o’clock local,” he said. “And I’ll tell you what, Glasgow is lovely.”

WWE has one week left in its European tour that began on March 14 in Barcelona, Spain. After today’s show, they head to London for Friday’s SmackDown, followed by shows in Vienna, Austria, and Amsterdam, Netherlands, this weekend, before returning to London to close out the tour with next week’s WWE Raw.

Corey Graves filling in for Pat McAfee on WWE Raw

With Pat McAfee not making the trip over to Brussels, there will be a change to the WWE Raw commentary team for this week.

PWInsider reports that Corey Graves will be filling in for McAfee on today’s Raw episode, calling the show alongside Michael Cole. The epiosde is taking place from Forest National in Brussels, Belgium and will air live on Netflix starting at 3 p.m. Eastern time. It’s the first of three straight Raws that will be airing in the afternoon on WWE’s European tour.

McAfee is in the United States hosting his ESPN show as usual today. Raw is in Glasgow next week and London the week after that, so it’s possible he will be missing one or both of those shows as well.

This is Graves’ first time back on main roster commentary since the social media posts he made in January voicing his displeasure at being moved to NXT. Graves missed one week of NXT commentary following that controversy, but the situation was resolved and he returned to his role broadcasting NXT with Vic Joseph & Booker T.

Today’s Raw is being built around John Cena’s first appearance since turning heel. Here is everything that’s been announced for the show:

  • John Cena and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will be under the same roof

Pat McAfee extends ‘handshake’ to Canadian fans after WWE Elimination Chamber comments

Pat McAfee offered a handshake and an explanation to Canadian fans for his comments at WWE Elimination Chamber on Saturday.

McAfee called Canada “terrible” to open the broadcast of Saturday’s show in response to the live crowd in Toronto booing the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

He issued a response during today’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show:

“Now, Canada. Listen, there’s been some things said to me from Canadians that, I guess, I respect because of the passion that you have for your country, which I hope you understand that I was showing the same for mine. You booed my country.”

“Anytime I’ve ever heard somebody boo our national anthem, my natural reaction is, ‘Let’s fight.’ That is literally my natural reaction. Now, a lot of Canadians have told me, why don’t you do a little investigating on why we’re booing? OK. ‘Did you hear what your president said?’ OK, listen, I understand there’s political differences at the current moment between US and Canada. But I feel like anytime I think of Canada, I don’t think of what Justin Trudeau does. I don’t think immediately of Justin Trudeau’s decisions. I don’t think immediately of what Canada is doing in the political sphere. I think of the people of Canada.”

He continued:

“So, I understand now from the Canadians that they have a lot more passion for their country than I could have ever imagined. A lot of terrible things have been said about me and I understand it. You boo my country. I called your country terrible. Let’s shake hands. You said you didn’t boo every member of the United States or every citizen of the United States of America. Well, I didn’t say the Canadians are terrible, I said your country was. So, you booed us, I said you’re terrible, let’s shake hands. Let’s move along. There you go. That’s what I would like to say. And I still love Canadians, okay? We got one in the building.”

“So, I love Canadians, but my first reaction whenever you boo our country is, okay, let’s fight. I’m sorry. So, let’s go shake their hands. Canada. Boom. I hope we get settled.”

Canadian fans have been booing the U.S. national anthem before NHL and NBA games since President Trump began making remarks suggesting Canada could become the “51st State.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told business leaders at the Canada-U.S. Economic Summit that Trump’s threats to annex the country are a “real thing,” saying the former president is motivated by a desire to tap into Canada’s critical mineral resources. Trudeau added, “Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing.”

According to a recent Pollara Strategic Insights report, fewer than 10 percent of Canadians consider Trump’s annexation threats to be a joke. Trudeau is in the UK on Monday meeting with King Charles, with U.S.-Canada relations expected to be among the topics discussed.

Michael Cole explains how he’s changed his approach to WWE commentary

Working alongside Pat McAfee has changed how Michael Cole approaches his role as a WWE commentator.

Speaking to Front Office Sports for an article published this week, Cole said being paired with McAfee has “100 percent” increased Cole’s enthusiasm for commentary and his longevity in the role. Cole said McAfee has taught him how to have fun — and Cole sees their pairing as two guys sitting back drinking beer on a Monday night talking about wrestling as opposed to two people acting like traditional commentators.

“I think one of the reasons that I’ve been here so long is the ability to…evolve. Over the years, I’ve gone from a straight play-by-play man to a heel. I’ve had matches. I’ve been beaten up. I went back to being a straightforward play-by-play man again,” Cole said. “With the emergence of Pat McAfee, Pat’s allowed me to understand that this business is supposed to be fun. It’s not serious, right? This is supposed to be a fun place to work. Sitting back and watching Pat, the one thing I’ve learned is we’re all fans. Pat has allowed me to really open up. He’s taught me how to entertain.

“It’s sort of like two guys just sitting back on a Monday night drinking a beer and talking about wrestling as opposed to two guys that are trying to act as wrestling commentators. We’re trying to understand and decipher it just as you guys do at home.”

Cole told Front Office Sports that he’s having more fun now than he’s ever had in his 28-year WWE career. He signed a new multi-year contract with WWE in 2024, and Cole said he’s looking forward to WWE reaching new heights over the next few years with Raw now on Netflix.

Raw moved to Netflix at the start of 2025 with Cole and McAfee serving as the show’s commentary team. McAfee made his return to Raw on the Netflix premiere after being gone for several months during college football season.

This Sunday (February 16), a new series titled WWE’s Greatest Moments premieres on A&E at 10:30 p.m. Eastern time. Cole is the host of the series. Its first episode will count down classic moments from Raw in the 1990s.

Pat McAfee makes surprise appearance at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event

Pat McAfee is back for one night.

The Raw commentator made his WWE return at Saturday Night’s Main Event joining Michael Cole on commentary to call the action. It was his first appearance since August, when he took time off to call College GameDay coverage for ESPN.

Prior to his absence, it was announced that McAfee would be returning for the premiere of Raw on Netflix, which is set for January 6. In a recent post on social media, McAfee reiterated he was excited to return to announcing next month when the college football season wraps up.

“Can’t wait to be talking into a microphone next to @MichaelCole again.. He’s the [greatest of all time] I’m excited to tell the worldwide audience on Netflix how great the WWE Superstars are…. and how big of scumbags some of ‘em are too. Let’s go,” he wrote.

McAfee is slated to return to commentary on Raw with Cole, who moved to SmackDown in the fall. It wasn’t made clear what would happen to the current Raw announce team, Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett.

Pat McAfee excited to return for WWE Raw’s Netflix era

With college football season close to wrapping up, Pat McAfee is looking forward to making his WWE return.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque reiterated this week that McAfee will be returning to WWE commentary when Raw’s Netflix era starts in January 2025. WWE and Netflix held a media event at Netflix headquarters on Tuesday celebrating their new partnership. Levesque said McAfee and Michael Cole will be calling Raw together weekly.

“An absolute honor to be asked back,” McAfee tweeted last night. “A Childhood dream realized every single time I’m lucky enough to be in an arena with the @WWE Universe.

“Can’t wait to be talking into a microphone next to @MichaelCole again.. He’s the [greatest of all time] I’m excited to tell the worldwide audience on Netflix how great the WWE Superstars are…. and how big of scumbags some of ‘em are too. Let’s go”

Raw’s Netflix premiere is taking place from the Los Angeles area on January 6 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood. John Cena, Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Bianca Belair, and rapper Travis Scott are being advertised for the show, along with “many other Superstars and surprise guests.”

McAfee joined ESPN’s College GameDay in 2022, which has caused him to take a break from his WWE role during college football season. The former NFL player also hosts The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN every weekday.

Sunday Update

– Bryan and I will be back tonight to talk about the weekend wrestling news and rundown the major shows. We have a lot of audio on the site as Garrett and I have done three shows largely on the McMahon documentary on Netflix. There is a lot behind the scenes, making of the docs, in-depth on the stories covered, and more.

– Just as CW aired the WrestleMania documentary head-to-head last night with Collision, on 10/12 they will air a Saturday night replay of NXT from 8-10 p.m, head-to-head with AEW WrestleDream. (thanks to Paul Verlander)

– WWE house show notes from last night in Columbus, GA (thanks to Lenny Levine)

  • Jey Uso b Bron Breakker to keep the IC title
  • Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill  b Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn to keep the women’s tag titles
  • Bayley b Nia Jax via DQ in a WWE women’s title match
  • Damien Priest & Rhea Ripley b Karrion Kross & Scarlett
  • Gunther b Ilja Dragunov to keep the world title (said to be a great match)
  • Wyatts b American Made
  • Johnny Gargano  & Tommaso Ciampa b Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa via DQ in a tag title match
  • Cody Rhodes b AJ Styles to retain the WWE title

– After FOX last week had a press release that subtly knocked WWE, not by name, but by saying the football game on the 20th did 81 percent better than the programming they had in the time slot last year, today’s fast nationals were reported by the usual source claiming SmackDown beat FOX’s football head-to-head even with the network advantage. Because the ratings don’t come out until tomorrow they used fast nationals without saying them, and forgetting fast nationals for live sports are misleading because they often don’t include the end of the game, and always don’t include West Coast viewership of a live sports event. The actual numbers will be out tomorrow afternoon. Plus the game they were talking about featured Washington, a West Coast team.

– There were some weird production glitches on Collision last night. There was a mistimed commercial break, a taped segment that started and stopped a few times with Okada, and graphic listing segment numbers on the screen.

– We’re looking for reports from tonight’s WWE house show in Huntsville, AL, looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

– Rich Eisen announced today that Pat McAfee will have a recurring spot on the NFL GameDay Morning on the NFL Network.

– Hiromu Takahashi has challenged Mistico to a match for the 10/14 King of Pro Wrestling show at Sumo Hall.

– Kayla Harrison has noted that if something happens where either bantamweight champion Raquel Pennington or challenger Julianna Pena can’t fight this coming Saturday on the UFC show, she said even if it’s 30 seconds’ notice, she’s been told she’s the backup and she’s taking the fight. Harrison has her second UFC fight Saturday against Ketlen Vieira with the winner likely getting the next title shot.

– Some notes on weekend matches I’ve heard about. Not a long list. The opening trios title match at Friday’s Arena Mexico show was very good but I haven’t seen the rest of the show yet. I’ve heard Shingo Takagi vs. Henare for the Never title, Douki vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru for the IWGP Jr. title and David Finlay vs. Yoshi-Hashi for the Global title on today’s Kobe show for New Japan were all great. The other bout getting a lot of raves was today’s DDT main event from Korakuen Hall with  Yuki Ueno & Mao & Kaisei Takeuchi (a mainstream star in his second match, literally a phenom at this like Logan Paul) vs. Chris Brookes & Takeshi Masaada & Masahiro Takanashi was also heavily praised. Another bout we heard was very strong was Gunther vs. Ilja Dragunov and Cody Rhodes vs. AJ Styles from last night in Columbus, GA.

– Raw for tomorrow in Evansville, IN has Bronson Reed vs. Braun Strowman last monster standing, Kofi Kingston vs. Chad Gable, Rey Mysterio vs. Xavier Woods and Domink Mysterio & Carlito & JD McDonah vs. Cruz Del Toro & Joaquin Wilde & Dragon Lee

– XICW from last night in Clinton Township, MI: Solo b Alex Weir, AOD b KJ Reynolds, Great Tiger & Soultaker b CJ Cole & Noctambulo, Heather Blue b Stella Buho, Schwartzy DCOR Dre Jacobs, Malcolm Monroe III b Hoodfoot to keep the Midwest title, TJ Meyer & Thomas Bailey b Marcus Porter & Royce Carney III, Kyle Coleman b LaDon Sanders, Aaron Orion b Devon Ryker, Randi West b Mickie Knuckles, Tommy Vendetta b Orlando Christopher to win the Intense title, Jimmy Jacobs & Adam Wick & Maxximillian b DBA & Malcolm Monroe III & Caden Monroe (thanks to Leonard Brand)

– Former NHL star Darren McCarty of the Detroit Red Wings will be on the first Maple Leaf Pro weekend on 10/19 and 10/20 in Windsor, ONT.  McCarty has been working in area indies for a while and has also worked for TNA.

– Jeff Amdur, the timekeeper or MCW, passed away this past week. MCW announced that he was the timekeeper at the company’s first-ever event in 1998.  He would do write-ups during the early days of the Internet for the shows as well.  (thanks to Bob Magee)

– Joe Wilchak of Atlas Security, who worked in Philadelphia at events dating back to ECW, passed away on Friday night due to lung cancer.

– Layla El has talked about being open for a Royal Rumble cameo.

– Stalker Ichikawa, the longtime Dragon Gate guy who would lose quickly, announced he will retire on the 12/17 show at Korakuen Hall. He has been wrestling rarely this year.

– In an interesting statement, Yuji Nagata on last night’s New Japan show in Kobe said he had a feeling this might be the last time he wrestles in the World Memorial Hall.

Pat McAfee to return to WWE Raw commentary team in January

Pat McAfee will be returning to Raw next year.

During Monday’s show, Michael Cole mentioned that McAfee would be leaving for the next couple of months ahead of football season. After a highlight video was shown featuring McAfee, he thanked Michael Cole and the people backstage for their work, saying this was a dream come true. Cole announced that McAfee would return when Raw moves to Netflix next January.

Earlier in the day, McAfee announced on social media that it would be his last show for a bit, as he will be doing College GameDay coverage starting this Saturday on ESPN.

“Very bummed out that tonight will be my last trip to that wonderful WWE family for a while,” he said. “All right, let’s have a day. I’m bummed out. Football season is starting, which is awesome. But the WWE family is where I’m supposed to be. And I know that, and I hope they do too.”

WWE announced during the SummerSlam pre-show that Joe Tessitore will become an announcer for the Raw brand starting on the September 2 edition of the show. Michael Cole will head to SmackDown as it moves to the USA Network on September 13.

Pat McAfee calling last WWE Raw ‘for a while’

With college football season about to kick off, Pat McAfee will be taking a break from his WWE role.

McAfee made a post on his Instagram stories today announcing that tonight will be the last WWE Raw episode he calls “for a while.” Since 2022, McAfee has been a panelist on ESPN’s College GameDay. He announced last month that he would be returning to GameDay for this upcoming season.

“All right, last Monday Night Raw Monday for a bit,” McAfee said. “Very bummed out that tonight will be my last trip to that wonderful WWE family for a while. All right, let’s have a day. I’m bummed out. Football season is starting, which is awesome. But the WWE family is where I’m supposed to be. And I know that, and I hope they do too.”

The first College GameDay episode of the season takes place live from Ireland this Saturday.

McAfee — a sports media superstar and former NFL player — is currently part of the WWE Raw commentary team alongside Michael Cole.

On September 2, ESPN/ABC broadcaster Joe Tessitore will debut as the new play-by-play voice of Raw and Cole will move over to SmackDown. Cole will then be back on Raw and Tessitore will move to SmackDown when Raw premieres on Netflix in January 2025.

January is also when college football season ends.

Wyatt Sicks angle takes place on The Pat McAfee Show

A VHS tape has been delivered to Pat McAfee.

During today’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the feed cut away to static before the words “You Lied” flashed on the screen. McAfee, as he has done previously, originally blamed his production team for what happened. Moments later, McAfee appears distracted by something off-set.

McAfee left the set and retrieved a box that contained a VHS tape similar to those Nikki Cross has been leaving at the commentary table during episodes of Raw. As this was going on, baseball analyst Jeff Passan remarked that he felt like Chad Gable.

McAfee later posted to social media that he will be bringing the videotape with him to tonight’s Raw.

“Hey @WWE. I’ll be bringing this #WyattSick6 box tonight to #WWERaw Could you please let the Wyatt’s know that I am a massive fan and I believe @MichaelCole would be a much better handler of the box… and also let them know that it has been an ABSOLUTE HONOR to transfer it a couple of times now but, it’s very ok for me not to. CAN’T WAIT FOR TONIGHT”

The angle takes place around the 1-hour 35-minute mark in the video below:

Pat McAfee to return on next week’s WWE Raw

Pat McAfee will return on next week’s Raw.

When Raw started on Monday, Michael Cole announced that McAfee would return on next week’s show in Ottawa, Canada. Corey Graves from the SmackDown announce team joined Cole for this week’s show.

This is the second week in a row McAfee has been gone due to the sudden death of his father-in-law, who was in the hospital battling an infection and ended up taking a turn for the worst.

The Miz took over announcing duties with Cole on last week’s Raw until it was time to take part in a match for the World Tag Team titles, leaving Cole by himself to call the action. Miz and R-Truth ended up losing the titles to Finn Balor & JD McDonagh.

After taking a hiatus from WWE last fall to join ESPN College GameDay, McAfee returned to WWE commentary full time following the Royal Rumble, where he was a surprise entrant. He joined the Raw brand as a full-time commentator along with Cole.
