NJPW reveals teams for NEVER Six-Man title tournament

NJPW has revealed the four teams that will be vying for the vacant NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team titles.

New NEVER Six-Man champs will be crowned at Wrestling World 2024 in Taiwan on Sunday, April 14. A four-team, one-night tournament is taking place at the event.

Here are the first-round matches:

  • Shingo Takagi, Yota Tsuji & BUSHI vs. EVIL, SHO & Yoshinobu Kanemaru
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi, Toru Yano & Boltin Oleg vs. Great-O-Khan, Francesco Akira & Callum Newman

Those will be the first two matches of the main card at Wrestling World 2024. The winning teams advance to the tournament final, which is main-eventing the show.

This January, the NEVER Six-Man titles were vacated due to Kazuchika Okada’s departure from NJPW. Okada, Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii were the champions at the time. They retained against Shane Haste, Mikey Nicholls & Kosei Fujita in their final title defense.

Tanahashi is returning to action at Wrestling World 2024 after having been out since February due to an ankle injury.

NJPW reveals cards for Road to Sakura Genesis

Full cards have been announced for the upcoming Road to Sakura Genesis tour.

The two major matches will be a Ultimate Triad match featuring Shingo Takagi against Aaron Henare for the KOPW Championship on April 2 and a NEVER Six-Man title match with champions Ren Narita, Minoru Suzuki, and El Desperado defending against EVIL, SHO, and Yujiro Takahashi on April 3. The Ultimate Triad match will have no count outs and no disqualifications, and a winner will be determined by pinfall, submission, or a ten-count knockout.

Another highlight on the cards, both of which will take place at Korakuen Hall, will feature the official debut of Boltin Oleg. The Kazakhstan wrestler made his debut in an exhibition match at Wrestle Kingdom 17, but his first official match will be on April 2 when he teams with Shota Umino and Ryusuke Taguchi against Zack Sabre Jr., Robbie Eagles, and Kosei Fujita.

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada will team together on April 3, taking on SANADA and Taichi.

Six-Man Tag Team title defense set for NJPW New Beginning in Osaka

The NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championships will be on the line at NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka. 

The promotion announced on Monday that House of Torture’s Sho, Yujiro Takahashi, and EVIL will defend the belts against Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado, and Ren Narita. 

While Suzuki Gun disbanded at the end of 2022, Suzuki and El Desperado have continued their alliance. Suzuki has also begun mentoring Ren Narita, who was at first hesitant to join him and Desperado. Their match against House of Torture in Osaka will be the first time the Six Man titles have been defended since last October. 

NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka takes place Saturday, February 11, 2023, from the Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan. The announced lineup for the show is below

NJPW Road to the New Beginning results: NEVER Six-Man tag title match

Here are quick results from this morning’s Road to the New Beginning show in Miyagi, featuring a NEVER six man tag team title change.

– Shota Umino and Ayato Yoshida defeated Toa Henare and Yota Tsuji

Umino scored the win over Tsuji with a fisherman’s suplex.

– Manabu Nakanishi and Tiger Mask defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Ren Narita

Tiger Mask pinned Narita with the tiger driver.

– Shingo Takagi defeated Yoshinobu Kanemaru by DQ

Desperado ran in and attacked Takagi as he was going for the Last of the Dragon. BUSHI ran in and took out both Kanemaru and Desperado with a double hurricanrana, which led to the next match.

– BUSHI defeated El Desperado by DQ

Desperado was disqualified after unmasking BUSHI.

– Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, Tomoaki Honma and YOSHI-HASHI defeated Jay White, Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi and Chase Owens

Tanahashi scored the win after a high fly flow on Yujiro.

– Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr. and Minoru Suzuki defeated Tetsuya Naito, SANADA and EVIL

Sabre Jr. pinned EVIL with the European clutch.

– Togi Makabe, Toru Yano and Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa and Taiji Ishimori to win the NEVER six man tag titles

Taguchi submitted Ishimori with an ankle lock to win the titles for his team.
