Harper & Rowan returning to WWE TV as the Bludgeon Brothers

A video that aired during SmackDown last night hyped the return of Luke Harper and Erick Rowan as a repackaged tag team.

The video opened with a shot of Harper and Rowan’s backs before they turned around and revealed it was them. Both were wielding hammers and delivered a message, capping it off by announcing that their new tag team name is the Bludgeon Brothers: “There is no conscience. There’s no moral compass. The virtuous will fall. The wicked will rise. Broken bones. Severed spines. Harper. Rowan. Bludgeon Brothers.”

Neither Harper nor Rowan have been on WWE TV in months. They were feuding in their last program together, with Harper defeating Rowan at Backlash in May.

If they return as heels, they’ll be joining a tag team division that is weaker on that side outside of The Usos. Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin won a fatal four-way number one contender’s match last night to become the next challengers for The Usos’ titles.

It had also been advertised that this week’s SmackDown would feature a Pulp Fiction-inspired edition of The Fashion Files, but it didn’t end up being shown as Breezango were in the number one contender’s match. Harper and Rowan had been speculated about as one of the options to eventually be revealed as their attackers from the Fashion Files segments.

WWE rounds out card for Backlash

WWE rounded out the card for Backlash by announcing two more matches for the show on Tuesday night.

It was first confirmed that Sami Zayn would be facing Baron Corbin at the pay-per-view. Zayn announced that he had requested and been granted the match during a backstage interview segment on SmackDown before being ambushed by Corbin. The feud against Corbin is Zayn’s first since joining SmackDown in the roster shakeup.

Another match was then revealed on Talking Smack, with Erick Rowan vs. Luke Harper set for Backlash.

The Allstate Arena in Chicago will host Backlash on Sunday. The updated lineup for the show is:

  • WWE Champion Randy Orton defending against Jinder Mahal
  • United States Champion Kevin Owens defending against AJ Styles
  • Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi, Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch vs. Natalya, Carmella & Tamina
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos defending against Breezango
  • Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn
  • Erick Rowan vs. Luke Harper
  • Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English (kickoff show)

WWE SmackDown live results: Six-pack challenge for a title shot

The Big Takeaway —

Jinder Mahal won a six-pack challenge match to become the top contender for the WWE title. Other matches also had title implications as Charlotte earned a shot at the women’s title after defeating the champion, Naomi, in a non-title match.

Setting up another title program, AJ Styles defeated Baron Corbin by count-out to seemingly ensure he is the next challenger for the US title. Meanwhile, US Champion Kevin Owens continues to proclaim himself as the “Face of America” in his new role on SmackDown.

Show Recap —

The show opened with a memorial graphic honoring Matthew “Rosey” Anoa’i.

After a recap of last week, Charlotte Flair is in the ring for a promo. Charlotte says she is losing her patience waiting for word from authority figures Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon. She wants them to grant her a title shot since jumping to SmackDown.

“Maybe they’re binge watching Fast and the Furious,” Charlotte sarcastically said. “Well, I’m fastly getting furious.” Clever.

She warned they will face her fury if she does not get a title match. SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi interrupted her pity party. She confronted Charlotte and wanted to grant her a title match. Naomi then attacked Charlotte and a brawl ensued. Cue the “Here Comes the Money” theme song.

Shane McMahon breaks up the brawl with just his presence. Shane booked a non-title match between the two women. If Charlotte wins, she gets a title shot.

In a backstage skit after a commercial, Shane is talking to Natalya. She is upset Charlotte is getting an opportunity for a title match before her. Shane said all she had to do was ask like Charlotte just did. So, it’s apparently that easy. Carmella, along with James Ellsworth in tow, joined the scene.

Carmella too is upset Charlotte is getting a title shot before her. Ellsworth said she deserved one before anyone. Tamina joined the debate and everybody talked at once. Then, Natalya said she had a plan, and everybody left with her except Shane.

Jinder Mahal won a six-pack challenge match to earn a WWE title shot at Backlash

Besides Mahal, the match also involved Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan, Luke Harper and Mojo Rawley.

The one fall match started as a melee and continued as such for several minutes. They fought each other in the ring and on the floor in a free-for-all. The brawl built to Harper doing a tope suicida. Ziggler went for a dive of his own, but Rowan cut him down with a spin kick. Rowan then powerbombed Ziggler of the ring to the floor onto everybody else. Zayn also did a slingshot moonsault to the floor.

Then the match settled into them taking turns going one-on-one in the ring. Zayn was running wild on Mahal when two unknown men at ringside grabbed Zayn by the feet to cut off his momentum. The two men were later identified as the Bollywood Boyz. The distraction allowed Mahal to first apply a Cobra clutch, then he lifted Zayn off his feet to slam him down. Mahal pinned Zayn to earn a WWE title shot at Backlash.

Afterwards, Renee Young interviewed Mahal in the ring. The crowd showered Mahal with boos. He cut a promo on them for booing him, briefly touching on issues of race and stereotypes.

After the promo, WWE Champion Randy Orton walked onstage to confront his new challenger. Orton began cutting a promo on Mahal when Bray Wyatt’s mystic powers took over the broadcast. Wyatt threatened Orton in a creepy promo pre-tape promo about the House of Horrors. Wyatt must have a tremendous post-production guy in his family.

A video package highlighted Shinsuke Nakamura. It was a beautiful thing, YeaOh!

In a backstage interview, Renee Young asked AJ Styles whether he wanted to face Chris Jericho or Kevin Owens in a US title match. Styles said it didn’t matter because he has home field advantage on SmackDown. Baron Corbin interrupted the interview. He had words with Styles, leading Styles to challenge him to a match for later tonight.

Natalya and the squad she gathered earlier stood in Charlotte’s path backstage as she was heading to the ring. They eventually let her pass, but all of the them gave Charlotte the stink eye as she walked by.

Charlotte defeated SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi in a non-title match

Charlotte pinned Naomi after Natural Selection. Naomi looked strong in the closing minutes with her getting plenty of offense and near falls towards the end. She seemingly had Charlotte reeling when Charlotte blocked an attempt by Naomi at the Rear View. Charlotte then used her finisher to score the pin.

Natalya and her squad watched the match on a monitor backstage. Later on, Charlotte walked past them again, giving a “wooo” as she past.

In some cross-promotion business with USA Network, the hosts of the new show “Team Ninja Warrior” were ringside promoting the show’s debut tonight after SmackDown.

The Colons defeated American Alpha

Epico and Primo worked over Chad Gable until a hot tag to Jason Jordan. On a sunset flip, Primo kicked Jordan so Epico could roll him up for the pinfall.

Thankfully, the Shining Stars gimmick seems done and the Colons are being pushed as a more serious team. The announcers put them over as being from a famed wrestling family.

Another teaser aired hyping the arrival of Lana. Previously she was doing the Emmalina gimmick. This week she was doing the Kelly Kelly gimmick from the early days of the ECW relaunch doing a provocative chair dance.

A video package highlighted Tye Dillinger. After it played, Dillinger said the promo was a perfect 10.

US Champion Kevin Owens’ “Face of America” challenge match

Owens first cut a promo saying he was the champion of the United States. He paused, then added he was from Canada. The crowd booed. He asked his challenger to introduce himself. The challenger said he was Gary Gandy, and added he was from Louisville for the hometown pop. Owens quickly squashed Gandy, then delivered a pop-up powerbomb for the pin.

After the quick match, Owens cut another promo saying as long as he hold the US title he will be the “Face of America” as that is his new heel tagline. Owens added no one could stop him. Owens said he was joining commentary for the next match. He ended his promo by speaking in French.

AJ Styles defeated Baron Corbin via count-out

Styles was playing cat-and-mouse with Corbin before getting caught and thrown into a ring post. Corbin worked over Styles and grounded him. Styles fought back only to get posted a second time. Moments later, Corbin played charging bull as Styles was the matador. Styles moved out of the way for Corbin himself to hit the ring post.

Styles went into his comeback, hitting a flurry of moves. Styles hit a flying forearm for a near fall. Corbin cut off the comeback and executed a backbreaker for a near fall. Styles transitioned into applying the Calf Crusher. Corbin got a rope break, and followed up by delivering Deep Six for another near fall. Styles countered by sending Corbin to the outside. Styles hooked Corbin and glared at Owens at the broadcast booth. Corbin backdropped Styles onto Owens.

Heading into the finish, Corbin tried to capitalize only for Styles to counter with an enzuigiri at ringside. Styles followed that by leaping off the steps for a his signature forearm smash. Styles rushed back into the ring and Corbin was unable to answer the count. Styles won via count-out to retain his spot as the next challenger for the US title.

WWE title number one contender’s match set for SmackDown

A six-way match to determine a title contender for the Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt winner will headline tonight’s SmackDown episode from Louisville.

Announced for the match are Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, Mojo Rawley, Dolph Ziggler, Jinder Mahal, and Sami Zayn. It’s notable that both AJ Styles and Baron Corbin are not in this match. It’s not clear if the winner would face Orton, who would be the likely champion, in a TV match or at the May 21st Backlash pay-per-view in Chicago. Styles is expected to face Kevin Owens on that show.

Owens will be doing a “Face of America” open challenge tonight.

In addition, a rematch with Austin Aries vs. TJ Perkins will be on 205 Live, as well as Alicia Fox confronting Noam Dar about her embarrassing situation with the gift where powder was all over her from last week’s show. Perkins beat Aries in their last meeting.

WWE SmackDown live results: The final build to WrestleMania 33

Date: March 28, 2017
Location: Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, VA

The Big Takeaway —

John Cena cut another memorable promo at the expense of Miz and Maryse on an otherwise dull SmackDown show.

The Women’s title match was announced as a 6-pack challenge featuring Alexa Bliss defending against Becky Lynch, Carmella, Mickie James, Natalya, and Naomi, who returned tonight.

Bray Wyatt defeated Luke Harper in their first ever TV match. Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin were not on the show.

Show Recap —

Mauro Ranallo is not on commentary. There was no explanation this week.

AJ Styles-Shane McMahon Contract Signing

Daniel Bryan came out to a huge reaction. Bryan asked if the crowd was ready for WrestleMania and they chanted “Yes.” He introduced Shane McMahon who received a mixed reaction. He still has a bruised eye. AJ Styles was introduced next. He has a new black and red t-shirt with the word “Untouchable” on it. Crowd chanted for Styles.

Shane said when SmackDown Live started nine months ago, they had a vision and Styles was always part of this vision. One guy in the crowd yelled “Your sister’s hot!” and people laughed. Shane called Styles one of the best performers to ever step in the ring and the crowd cheered. Styles agreed. “Yeah, I’m pretty phenomenal!”

Shane talked about Styles’ growing fan support and winning the WWE championship. However, Styles became arrogant which cost him the title against John Cena and the match with Randy Orton. Shane said he always gave his opponents more than they expected and warned Styles if he didn’t give his A-game, it would be Shane’s hand raised at WrestleMania. Shane signed the contract, the crowd chanted for Styles.

Styles was about to sign but first asked Shane if he knew they were in just in a regular match. Shane can’t be outside the ring for more than 10 seconds and he can’t use a table. Styles questioned if Shane has even been in a match like that, and said the ring belonged to him. Styles called himself untouchable and said he would embarrass Shane.

Styles recalled Shane being in the ring with Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, The Rock and Undertaker. (Austin’s name got the loudest reaction.) Styles called himself the greatest all-around performer in history and Shane would find out for himself on Sunday. Styles signed the contract. They got face to face before Bryan got in the middle and told them to shake hands. Shane offered his hand but Styles left the ring.

There will be more clips from Total Bellas on MizTV tonight.

Becky Lynch NC Carmella (w/James Ellsworth)

Alexa Bliss and Mickie James joined commentary, sitting on opposite ends of the table. Phillips said they still don’t know the details of the Women’s title match at Mania. That seems terribly unfair to Bliss. Carmella gave Ellsworth her gum and he stored it in his mouth.

Bliss called Mickie irrelevant and Mickie called herself one of the all-time greats. They got into a fight which spilled into the ring. Mickie smacked Carmella and the referee called for the bell. Mickie and Lynch were left standing as they cut to commercial.

Women’s champion Alexa Bliss & Carmella (w/James Ellsworth) defeated Becky Lynch & Mickie James

As the match plodding along, Natalya’s music hit and she walked down toward the ring for some reason. Another commercial. After a break, Natalya was on commentary. Mickie made the hot tag to Lynch who ran wild on Carmella hitting a dropkick and Exploder. Natalya called Lynch a cheap knockoff of Pippi Longstocking and jumped off commentary to get involved. Lynch was able to get rid of her, but Ellsworth grabbed Lynch by the leg allowing Carmella to roll her up for the win.

Everyone brawled after the match until Naomi returned to take everyone out. Naomi announced that she was back and entering the Women’s title match in her hometown. She began saying everyone would “feel the glow” but the crowd actually finished it for her.

Backstage, Breezy Bella asked Bryan to enter the Women’s match at Mania. He said no. Breeze took off his wig and Bryan feigned surprise to learn it wasn’t Nikki Bella. Fandango entered and Bryan asked if they wanted to be in the Andre the Giant battle royal. They were happy with that. Bryan put them in a 10-man tag match tonight, then jumped up and down in excitement with Breeze until Fandango pulled his partner away to get ready.

MizTV

They aired a new clip from Total Bellas Bull****. Miz, playing John Cena, sat at the dinner table wearing a Cena baseball cap and t-shirt with an oversized suit jacket. Maryse, playing Nikki Bella, wore a nice dress and baseball cap. “Cena” invited Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella to the table. Miz played Bryan. He had a fake beard and “walked” to the ring on his knees (as if they were his feet) and Maryse played Brie again. “Brie” was again confused which Bella she was until she realized she had a wedding ring.

“Cena” offered them steak but “Bryan” complained because he’s a vegan and it would hurt his tummy. As “Cena” listed the rules of the table, “Nikki” asked Cena to marry him. To be continued. They cut back to the ring and the crowd applauded their performances. Commercial break.

Back from break, “Cena” declined Nikki’s proposal because it would go against his brand of hustling the fans. “Cena” called himself a fake and you can’t see him because there’s nothing worth seeing.

Miz and Maryse took off their disguises and had a message for Cena and Nikki. Miz said Mania would be the curtain call for Cena and Nikki. Miz said Cena would just be a big dumb animal walking the streets, and Maryse hoped Nikki enjoyed the Kid’s Choice Awards because it’s as close to having kids with Cena as she was going to get. Back to the ring, Miz and Maryse soaked in the applause.

Cena and Nikki interrupted and were all smiles. Cena said he thought it was all very funny, but then just kind of mocked the whole thing. He called it one of the few good things Miz has done here. Cena said the parody didn’t bother them, but Miz and Maryse did. Then he got serious.

Cena noted that Maryse is here right now despite her claim that Nikki didn’t want her there. Cena told Maryse she wasn’t brought back before because she did nothing the first time. Cena admitted he was leaving to do a movie, but then he’d be back. He noted all the guys who have done this, including Triple H, Dean Ambrose, Sheamus and Miz himself. In fact, Miz only makes cheap knockoffs of Cena’s movies.

Cena still couldn’t figure out why Maryse even there and talked about the women’s revolution and her lack of involvement. He asked why they poked fun at them for not having kids when Miz and Maryse don’t either and wondered if Miz was firing blanks.

Cena warned Miz that he would crush him on Sunday. Cena said Miz can mock all of his rules, but in 10 years in WWE, Miz hasn’t learned the one rule that matters, which was to back up your talk. He called Miz a puss (or pussy – it was bleeped). He dared Miz to throw a bunch and warned Maryse that Nikki would knock the botox out of her cheeks.

Cena and Nikki waited for Miz and Maryse to take their shot but they left. Miz had a change of heart and ran back down to fight, but Maryse stopped him and they walked away. Nikki called them “fake-ass, see-through haters,” and would get their asses kicked at Mania. Cena and Nikki kissed.

10-Man Tag Match: American Alpha, Mojo Rawley, Heath Slater & Rhyno defeated The Usos, Breezango & Dolph Ziggler

The heels worked over Gable and there was a moderate “We want Mojo” chant. Rawley got the hot tag and ran wild on Breeze. He had the match won but an Uso broke up the cover. This led to a bunch of guys getting tossed over the top rope. Rhyno gored the hell out of Ziggler to a big pop. Rawley picked up the pinfall win after a running punch on Breeze.

Luke Harper promo. He said Bray threw him out like a piece of trash, but Harper sees the truth – he doesn’t need Bray Wyatt. Harper said he was free and told Bray to run.

The announcers ran down the WrestleMania 33 card. You know the show is going to be long when just reading the card takes 4 minutes. The SmackDown Women’s title match was now a 6-pack challenge with Bliss, Carmella, Lynch, James, Natalya and Naomi. The Raw tag title match was officially announced as a ladder match.

Non-title: WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defeated Luke Harper

As he as in recent house shows, Harper wore dark blue pants, a black tank top and his hair is tied back. Wyatt used a superplex, uranage and senton. Harper tried a Sister Abigail but Wyatt slipped outside. Harper followed with two suicide dives, a slingshot senton and big boot for a two count. Harper hit a discus clothesline for another two count.

Wyatt got to his knees and stared at up at Harper. Harper hesitated before going for another discus clothesline, but Wyatt caught him with Sister Abigail for the win. Match was 8 minutes and wasn’t much.

Wyatt got on his knees and posed with the title. Randy Orton appeared on the screen, back at Abigail’s gravesite. He drove the cross we saw last week into the dirt and said he would win the title. This was real dumb.

Final Thoughts —

Cena’s promo was great. The rest was not. Enjoy WrestleMania.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Orton burns down the Wyatt compound

Though he didn’t do it in a particularly conventional way, Randy Orton finally turned his back on Bray Wyatt on last night’s SmackDown.

Orton closed the show by burning down the Wyatt Family compound and announcing that he’s coming for Wyatt’s WWE Championship. That storyline reached its turning point after AJ Styles supposedly became the new number one contender for the title earlier in the night after some tension with Shane McMahon.

SmackDown also featured John Cena & Nikki Bella continuing their feud with The Miz & Maryse, Becky Lynch vs. Mickie James in a two-out-of-three falls match, and more of the early build to WrestleMania.

Location: Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, MN

The Big Takeaway —

Randy Orton announced that he will be facing Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania for the WWE title. He did so by burning down the gravesite of Bray’s sister Abigail on live national television.

AJ Styles defeated Luke Harper to apparently earn a title shot earlier in the show. Shane McMahon almost cost him the match, but Styles won anyway. We’ll have to wait to find out what happens next.

Also, John Cena cut a memorable promo on the Miz. Cena and Nikki Bella will face James Ellsworth and Carmella next week.

Show Recap —

Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan were backstage watching the finish to last week’s battle royal. They had no new replays, just the same angle as last week. Shane told Bryan he made the right call. Styles joined and said Harper fell out first, so they can go ahead and cancel the match and make him number one contender. Styles began joking about Harper, suggesting he hasn’t showered in a while. Harper was standing him behind him of course. Styles left upon realizing this. Harper looked at Shane and Bryan, said “thank you,” and left.

Tom Phillips is still on commentary, if you were wondering.

MizTV with John Cena

Miz introduced Cena, but before Cena could speak, Miz had them cut his mic. Miz had some things to say before Cena was allowed to talk. Miz claimed Cena was on top, not because he was good, but because he manipulates everyone. Miz suggested Cena would never let him be the guy. He was about to reach that level when he main evented WrestleMania, but claimed Cena took it away from him a few weeks later.

Miz called Cena jealous and a hypocrite. He reminded us about all of the nasty things Cena said about The Rock leaving for Hollywood, but now Cena’s the one who’s never around. This led to a “You sold out” chant. Miz called Cena a parody of his former self, and his former self was a joke.

Miz was frustrated because he’s the one who’s here, doing the media, and making SmackDown a must-see show. Cena was gifted a title match at Royal Rumble, but no matter how many strings he pulls, there will still only be one greatest of all time (Ric Flair). Miz tossed Cena from the battle royal because he wanted Cena to feel what he feels, but it’s still nothing compared to what Cena has done to him. He let Cena talk.

Cena, of course, let Miz know he’s just repeating what we’ve heard from everyone else for years. Cena pointed out that if he was really pulling the strings, there’s no way he’d be standing face-to-face with Miz. Rather, Cena would be standing face-to-face with the Undertaker. This led to cheers and some Yes chants.

Cena said he never asked anyone to follow him and everyone knows who he is. He ran down the Miz, saying he cut his last name down to resemble The Rock, stole Chris Jericho’s personality, took Ric Flair’s figure four, uses Daniel Bryan’s moves and chants, and is just repeating AJ Styles from the last 6 months. Cena said Miz was just a dude dressed up as a dude playing another dude.

Cena said if you asked any of the greats, they’ll tell you that they’re always themselves in the ring, but Miz is part of a group of wrestlers who think they can over if they prove they’ve been held down. Cena told Miz that he wasn’t the Undertaker, but if he kept pressing him, he was a deadman.

Cena was about to leave, but Maryse wouldn’t allow him. She said Cena wasn’t half the man Miz was and called him an egomaniac. She claimed guys with big egos have small penises. She slapped him. Cena laughed and said she just made the biggest mistake of her life. Nikki Bella’s music hit and she ran down, but Miz and Maryse bailed through the crowd. Nikki told Maryse if she lays her hands on her man again, “I’m gonna break ya bitch, ya hear me?”

2 out of 3 falls match: Becky Lynch defeated Mickie James

Nothing really happened since the last commercial break, but they still went to commercial two minutes into the match. I suppose the first segment might’ve gone long.

James won the first fall after about 8 minutes with a jumping DDT.

Lynch scored the second fall with a school boy after Mickie missed a move off the top. Mickie blew a kiss at someone in the crowd right before that. Or someone on commentary.

Alexa Bliss marched to the ring and distracted the referee as Lynch had Mickie pinned. Mickie went after Lynch but accidentally knocked Bliss off the apron. They traded rollups leading to Lynch applying the Disarmer for the tap-out win.

Luke Harper cut a promo on Bray Wyatt backstage in his own creepy room. He wasn’t afraid of Bray, but at WrestleMania, Bray would be afraid of him. They cut to Bray who was in his creepy room and said he would be watching tonight with his blood Randy Orton. He called himself God.

Dasha Fuentes asked Alexa Bliss about Lynch. Bliss was pissed she asked about Lynch instead of asking her about becoming the first 2-time SmackDown Women’s champion. She managed to compare this to the Oscars and Emma Stone because this company can’t help themselves. Bliss did an acceptance speech and thanked Naomi for having bad knees and poor coordination. Natalya interrupted and asked Fuentes to leave by saying, “Can we just have a minute for one sec?” Natalya told Bliss she would take the title.

Elsewhere, Styles told Renee Young that Harper clearly landed first last week. He also noted how convenient it was that they didn’t have a proper camera angle. A confident Styles said he would main event WrestleMania.

WWE Title Number One Contendership: AJ Styles defeated Luke Harper

There’s still an hour left in the show.

Harper toyed with Styles early on. Styles had a headlock applied but Harper just casually lifted him off the ground, then followed with a dropkick. He tossed Styles around but Styles kicked Harper’s leg out of his leg to knock him off the apron, then followed with a Pele kick from the floor. Harper came back with a springboard senton and big boot for a two count.

Crowd did loud dueling chants of “Let’s go Harper” and “AJ Styles.” Harper hit a suicide dive, but Styles came back with a hurricanrana. Harper dodged the combination strikes and nailed a dragon suplex for two.

Immediately following a break, Harper hit a sit-out powerbomb for a nearfall. Styles then hit an enziguri and a Phenomenal forearm. Harper’s foot was on the rope, but the referee counted three, the bell rang and Styles’ music played.

Shane McMahon came out. Styles thought he was out to congratulate him, but instead, Shane restarted the match. Harper sent Styles to the outside and Styles began arguing with Shane. Harper came in with a big boot, but Styles ducked and the boot caught Shane instead. Styles hit a springboard 450 splash back in the ring for the pinfall win.

Good match that went about 12 minutes. Pinning Harper twice was a really dumb idea, however.

Renee was about to interview Nikki Bella and John Cena, but they were interrupted by the snickering duo of Carmella and James Ellsworth. Carmella and Ellsworth called them phonies as Ellsworth pointed at Nikki’s breasts. Nikki challenged them to a mixed tag match next week and Cena made it official, so I guess Miz was right about Cena having pull.

Daniel Bryan congratulated Styles backstage for getting what he thought he deserved. Bryan offered a handshake but Styles said, “No thanks.” Styles heard that Bray had an invocation tonight and he wanted to attend.

Dean Ambrose came out to face a jobber but he just gave the guy a Dirty Deeds and cut a promo instead. (Update: I didn’t even notice, but the jobber was Curt Hawkins.) He was pissed about getting attacked by Baron Corbin. He said messing with Dean Ambrose was a very, very bad idea and challenged Corbin to a fight here in Minnesota. Corbin appeared on the screen and declined the invitation.

Ambrose said Corbin’s tattoos look even worse on the big screen. He wanted Corbin to hurry up because he didn’t validate his parking and only had about 15 minutes left. Corbin didn’t think that was funny. He said Ambrose cost him the title and would take everything from Dean. Ambrose looked bored by his promo and told Corbin they were far from finished. This was good.

Nikki Bella & John Cena vs. Carmella & James Ellsworth was announced for next week.

Chairs Match: Dolph Ziggler defeated Apollo Crews

As Ziggler made his entrance, Crews attacked him from behind. The match started and Mauro Ranallo said Crews was off to a great start. Yeah, because he attacked the guy from behind. Crews got a couple of nearfalls with a standing moonsault with the chair on Ziggler, and an Angle slam on a chair as well.

Crews positioned the chair to stand up and I guess was about to slam Ziggler on it, but Ziggler kicked his leg out causing Crews to land throat-first on the edge of the chair. Ziggler then crotched Crews on the chair and covered him for the pinfall win. This sucked.

They announced Beth Phoenix for the Hall of Fame earlier.

Phillips and JBL plugged the Network. The camera focused only on those two, cutting Ranallo and Otunga out of the frame.

Natalya, AJ Styles and American Alpha will be on Talking Smack tonight with Renee and Bryan.

Bray Wyatt’s Invocation

Bray said it didn’t matter to him who won the match earlier and Styles would end up like the rest. Bray began rambling and the crowd chanted “What.” Bray said he was from a place where Randy Orton is right now. Orton appeared on the screen in the shed we’ve seen the Wyatts appear from in the past. Creepy music played and the rocking chair was rocking on its own.

Orton said this was Bray’s world, “but it’s not mine.” That was the big turn. The crowd cheered. Orton once said, “if you can’t beat them join them,” but when the time was right, “screw him.” Orton said sister Abigail was put to rest directly beneath where he stood, “or at least what’s left of her.”

Orton pulled out a pickaxe and said he knew Bray was afraid. Orton said he would burn sister Abigail’s soul, then Orton would be the master and Bray would be the servant. He doused the shed in gasoline, as well as the chair. Orton announced he was coming for Bray and his title at WrestleMania. The crowd cheered again.

Some of the boards were already removed from the floor, exposing the dirt below. Orton dumped gasoline on the dirt as Bray frantically paced back and forth. Orton left the shed and poured a trail of gasoline behind him. Bray begged Orton not to do it and yelled, “I’ll kill you.”

Orton said he would burn the soul of sister Abigail to eternal damnation. He lit a flame and set the place on fire as Bray freaked out. This was almost all worth it for the shot of Orton doing his famous pose in front of the burning building.

Final Thoughts —

Aside from Luke Harper getting pinned twice in the same match, this was an enjoyable show until the Chairs match. I would love to see how (if) they explain why Orton waited so long to do this to Bray Wyatt, and how they can justify Styles not getting a title match at WrestleMania. I suppose they can do Orton vs. Styles on TV to finally decide who gets the shot.

On another note, Cena denied pulling any strings backstage, then basically booked a match for next week. They can play that into the storyline, but that seems unlikely.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Main event ends in controversy

As part of the ongoing storyline where Randy Orton refuses to face Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania, it was advertised that a new number one contender for the WWE Championship would be decided on Tuesday night.

That didn’t end up happening. The battle royal main event came down to AJ Styles and Luke Harper, with WWE claiming that the two hit the floor at the same time. They’ll face each other next week with the winner supposedly getting a title shot at WrestleMania.

Last night’s SmackDown also featured Naomi relinquishing her Women’s title, a new champion being crowned, and the beginnings of some build for WrestleMania between John Cena, Nikki Bella, The Miz, and Maryse.

WWE adds more matches to the Elimination Chamber & Fastlane cards

WWE continued building to its next two brand-exclusive pay-per-views on Tuesday night by adding matches to both the Fastlane and Elimination Chamber cards.

Jack Gallagher capped off the night on 205 Live by becoming the number one contender for Neville’s WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Gallagher defeated TJ Perkins, Mustafa Ali, Cedric Alexander, and Noam Dar in a fatal five-way elimination match to get the title shot and will challenge Neville at Fastlane.

Earlier in the night on SmackDown, two more matches were added to the Elimination Chamber card as well. It was announced that Randy Orton would be facing Luke Harper at the PPV as part of the ongoing storyline with the Wyatt Family. Dolph Ziggler will also be involved in a handicap match at Elimination Chamber as he takes on both Apollo Crews & Kalisto.

Elimination Chamber and Fastlane are WWE’s final two PPVs before WrestleMania 33. Elimination Chamber will take place at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona this coming Sunday, while the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will host Fastlane on March 5th.

WWE SmackDown live results: The build to Elimination Chamber

Date: January 31, 2017
Location: American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX

The Big Takeaway —

John Cena will defend the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber match against AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, The Miz, Baron Corbin and Bray Wyatt. They hinted at Styles still getting a one-on-one rematch, although that could end up getting ignored/nixed by Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan.

AJ Styles pinned Dean Ambrose in a non-title match, and Naomi once again pinned Alexa Bliss in a tag match. Randy Orton also pinned John Cena in a tag match, and the two will have a singles match next week.

They also announced Natalya vs. Nikki Bella at Elimination Chamber. They might be setting up a multi-team match for the tag titles, possibly in the Chamber, although that wasn’t announced.

Show Recap —

A Royal Rumble video recap aired focusing on Randy Orton winning the Rumble match and John Cena becoming 16-time champion. The camera zoomed out and watching the monitor was AJ Styles, Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan.

Styles wanted to know when he’s getting his rematch but didn’t want to hear that it was going to be in the Elimination Chamber. Bryan said the next WWE Title match would be in the Chamber, but Styles still wanted a one-on-one match. Styles wanted to know who was in the Chamber. Shane said Styles was in it, which he was happy about, as well as Bray Wyatt, Baron Corbin, The Miz and Dean Ambrose.

Ambrose showed up as his named was announced, thanked Shane and was about to leave until Styles told him to get out. Ambrose called him “real soccer moms of Atlanta” and recalled when a weasel-looking guy pushed him off a ladder and cost him the WWE title against Styles. Now that James Ellsworth is in love and out of the picture, Ambrose wanted a match with Styles. Styles didn’t like this idea, but Shane made the match.

John Cena in-ring promo

Cena got a mixed reaction, although it didn’t seem that loud. He tried to get the crowd riled up and he got some dueling chants. Cena apologized to Styles for saying he wasn’t in his league and said Styles brought out the best in him. Cena said now wasn’t the time for confetti or a celebration, because in less than two weeks, he’ll be defending the title at Elimination Chamber. Cena said he would still be champ after the Chamber.

This brought out Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton. Bray said it seemed like the more things change, the more they stay the same, but at the Chamber, Cena will be trapped in a cage with him and he would become WWE champion. Orton said that if Cena somehow escapes the Chamber alive with the title, Orton would take it from him at WrestleMania and end their rivalry once and for all.

Bray and Orton sauntered down to the ring and surrounded Cena. The lights went out and Luke Harper appeared behind Cena. However, Harper turned his gaze to Bray and Orton, and Cena looked quite thrilled upon realizing he wasn’t about to get killed. Orton and Bray backed off, but Shane came out and made a tag match for right now.

Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt defeated WWE Champion John Cena & Luke Harper

Cena and Bray started but Bray quickly tagged in Orton. As Cena and Orton faced off, Cena teased this was a Mania preview and there were loud dueling chants for Cena. Before they could start, Harper tagged himself in. Harper ran wild on Orton and backdropped him onto the announce table, which is a common spot Orton does. Even though the crowd likes Orton, they cheered for Harper here.

Bray tagged in and faced off with Harper, but Harper backed down and tagged in Cena. Bray and Orton took control. Orton backdropped Cena onto the announce table during a break. The crowd chanted “We want Harper” as Orton gave Cena draping DDT. Orton knocked Harper off the apron but the distraction allowed Cena to do his usual comeback until Orton cut him off with a backbreaker.

Harper jumped in the ring and knocked down Orton. He was about to give Bray a Sister Abigail but Orton got in the way. Bray gave Harper the Sister Abigail instead and Orton gave Cena an RKO for the pinfall win.

Naomi and Becky Lynch will face Alexa Bliss and Mickie James tonight. Styles vs. Ambrose is the main event.

Carmella (w/James Ellsworth) defeated Delilah Dawson

James Ellsworth came out wearing the outfit Carmella got him last week. He wanted the crowd to be quiet but they booed. He was trying to be polite and asked them again but they booed. He then introduced Carmella. Tom Phillips wondered how Ellsworth was still walking after he almost died at the Rumble.

JBL berated Mauro Ranallo for calling this match seriously and took shots at Delilah Dawson’s (Delilah Doom’s) appearance for some reason (she had blue hair). Ellsworth tripped Dawson and Carmella won with the Code of Silence.

Dolph Ziggler defeated Kalisto

Ziggler won in just under 2 minutes with a superkick. Before the match, they said Kalisto was going for revenge against his former friend. Like last week… and two weeks before that. After the match, Ziggler tried to rip off Kalisto’s mask but Apollo Crews ran down to make the save. Ziggler ran away.

Backstage, Dasha Fuentes interviewed Becky Lynch and Naomi. Lynch said she won’t forget what Mickie James did to her and is used to getting attacked from all sides–from behind, from the side and now from the past. Naomi said Alexa Bliss felt the glow on Sunday and will again tonight. Naomi referred to their team as Glow Fire and they were very excited.

Naomi & Becky Lynch defeated Alexa Bliss & Mickie James

Ranallo said Mickie made her WWE debut in this building in 2006 and won her final Women’s championship on this date at the 2010 Royal Rumble. The heels briefly had control on Naomi until she made the hot tag to Lynch, who ran wild on James. The heels took over on Lynch after Bliss distracted her.

After a break, the crowd chanted for Lynch who eventually made the hot tag to Naomi. Naomi did a flashy series resulting in a nearfall on Bliss. The heels tried to double-team her, but Lynch tackled James out of the ring and Naomi nailed Bliss with a split-legged moonsault for the win. This was a good showcase for Naomi.

Backstage, Fuentes asked American Alpha what’s next for the tag champs. They were wondering the same thing. They’ve been champions for a month but nobody has stepped up to challenge them after they beat the Wyatt Family. Gable covered his eyes, waved his title belt around and begged someone to step up and take it. Jordan had to duck as Gable waved the belt around, which was pretty goofy. Gable said they would go to the ring and issue an open challenge and told Fuentes to wish them luck. She just stood there, so Jordan reminded her to wish them luck, and she did.

Daniel Bryan is back on Talking Smack tonight with Renee Young. Guests are American Alpha, Naomi and Randy Orton.

Tag Team Championship Open Challenge

The Usos came out to challenge American Alpha, but they were followed by The Ascension, Vaudevillains, Breezango and Heath Slater & Rhyno. As Fandango fanned himself with his fake citation papers, David Otunga mentioned the level of competition in this division. The teams brawled which led to a commercial break.

Back from break, the brawl is still going as referees try to break it up. The ring was eventually cleared with just American Alpha and Slater & Rhyno left standing. AA’s music randomly started playing, I guess because the production guys figured the brawl was over. The crowd watched silently. This was not good, unless the purpose of this segment was to show how weak the division is.

They replayed the brawl by Natalya and Nikki Bella last week. They cut to Bryan who happened to be on the phone with Brie talking about that very thing. Natalya entered with two security guards and figured Bryan asked her to come talk about her new merchandise. Nikki showed up and she argued with Natalya. Bryan freaked and yelled “enough!” He then calmly informed them they would be having a match at Elimination Chamber. Natalya stormed off.

John Cena will face Randy Orton next week on SmackDown. Neville plugged 205 Live.

Non-title: AJ Styles defeated Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose

The Miz is on commentary with Maryse. They’ve gone back to announcing Styles as the Phenomenal AJ Styles, instead of the face that runs the place. There were dueling chants of “AJ Styles” and “Let’s go Ambrose.” Ranallo called Ambrose a workhorse and the only man in WWE who worked over 200 matches last year.

Styles hit one kick to the chest and Miz thought he was about to do his Yes kicks, which led to a rant about Daniel Bryan. Miz said the kicks and dropkicks were his moves because Bryan doesn’t wrestle anymore. About 6 minutes into the match, Ambrose clotheslined Styles to the outside and Baron Corbin came out to his music and joined commentary.

They’re not all talking, but there are seven people sitting at commentary. Corbin called Miz a joke, so Miz put over his own accomplishments. Corbin said he can do whatever Miz has done, but Miz could never do what he has. Miz asked Corbin what he’s even done and Corbin said he played in the NFL, which only 1-percent of people can say they’ve done. Miz reminded him they weren’t in the NFL and Maryse was very amused. Miz completely schooled Corbin.

Ambrose went for a suicide dive but Styles nailed him with a forearm. They traded counters leading to Ambrose hitting a release inside out suplex for a nearfall. Styles caught Ambrose with a fireman’s carry into a neckbreaker for two. Styles hit a Pele kick but Ambrose came back with a rebound clothesline.

Ambrose tossed Styles outside and followed with a diving elbow drop. Corbin got tired of Miz’s talking and got up to confront him. Miz tried to run away into the ring after throwing the first punch, but Corbin grabbed him by the leg. Ambrose had the match won but the referee was distracted. Ambrose was pissed and nailed Corbin with a dive. However, Styles caught Ambrose with a Styles Clash for the win. Good match.

Afterwards, Miz gave Ambrose a Skull Crushing Finale. Corbin then jumped in and gave End of Days to both Miz and Ambrose. Styles watched in amusement from the ramp.

Final Thoughts —

This show was alright. SmackDown felt very top-heavy following the draft, and while a few acts are better off than they were back then, all these months later it doesn’t feel much different.
